    Great for these types of students

    AU is the place to be for future politicians, political activists and international studies majors. It's for the independent and outgoing who will enjoy exploring it's great location.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get to know your academic advisor. Feeling comfortable going to them makes your entire freshmen experience so much easier. They want to help you, let them. If you find that you really enjoy a specific professor, they want you to go to office hours and get to know them - it will pay off, and having a staff member that write great recommendations for you will give you an edge for internships. It's a very academic school, but there's still a large greek life and a great basketball team.
    Bang for the buck

    While the school is very expensive, I really feel that its giving me the best education for me, and allowing me to have an edge in my education. I feel that the price is worth it, and there are so many people at the school that want to help you lower the burden of cost. Don't let it deter you from the opportunity of a lifetime.

    I come from a rather small, everyone knows everyone town. Being in Washington D.C. is an experience unlike any other. It's a big city with a town feeling, especially because American is located more in the suburbs. The city itself has so much to offer to students, and there's no better place to learn about the government.
    Am learning a lot

    I've found that the edge that American University has is the range of classes offered. The classes required for each major and much more focused than other schools I've looked into. I fell in love with only taking glasses that truly interest and intrigue me as oppose to a large number of broad requirements. I've learned more because of the extra interest and direction that the school allows its students.

    Great for these types of students

    AU is perfect for all types of students that want to be actively involved on campus. I don't know a single person at American that doesn't do at least two extra-curriculars outside of their class load.
    Tips for prospective students

    Definitely come visit the campus before making a decision, because that's what sold me on coming here. Especially in the spring you can really see how active students are in and outside the classroom, and how much a college with a campus in a city has to offer.
    Bang for the buck

    While the tuition is very high, the quality of things on campus is very good. There are multiple different construction projects going on, but housing is currently a big issue. Many freshman find themselves in triples, and due to limited housing, juniors and seniors are having a harder time getting into campus housing. The food here is ok, though there are only two different options for places to use your meal swipes on campus.

    DC is such a great environment for college students, because there's always something going on in the city. American is unique because it has a campus, while still being inside the city.
    Am learning a lot

    The professors here at American are some of the best I've met between visiting campuses or friends at other colleges. They are very approachable, and dedicated to their fields of study. I haven't met one yet that doesn't have some sort of higher degree, and all have extra activities going on outside being a teacher.

    Anyone interested in international studies, including regional studies (African Studies, European Business, etc.), future MBAs and students interested in business, students who want to have great internship opportunities, or anyone interested in politics.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get to know your professors! AU professors are a wealth of information, and they're eager to help their students (future AU alum) succeed both in and outside the classroom. I've gotten great recommendations, internships, and even a job from visiting my professors during their office hours. Don't be shy!
    Bang for the buck

    Yes, AU is expensive, but I tend to look at it as an investment in my future. Potential employers respect an AU degree because they know that AU graduates are well-rounded competent and professional. Plus, AU offers a lot of merit and need-based scholarships; contact the Financial Aid office if the cost is your biggest concern.
    Did enjoy being here

    AU is not only a great school, it's in a GREAT city. In DC, you can spend your weekends attending gala affairs at embassies or free swing-dancing lessons at the Kennedy Center or doing one of a million other things, mostly for free. Plus DC has so many NGOs and, obviously, government offices that it's easy to find an internship to gain real-world experience (and get credit for it!). AU also offers a lot in terms of student activities: concerts, forums and guest speakers, volunteer trips abroad, Greek life, etc. Trust me, you'll never be bored.
    Did learn a lot

    As a student of International Relations, I don't think I could have chosen a better school. My professors were not only well-versed on theory, but they had made (and were STILL making) valuable contributions to their fields. Relative to other schools, AU also has VERY small class sizes (particularly in the Honors program), which makes professors very approachable, and AU offers a wide variety of specialized one-time-only classes that expand the course offerings DRAMATICALLY. In my 4 years there, I took classes on the Baby Boomer's influence on the sexual revolution, the politics of human rights in Cuba, drug cartels in Colombia, and humanitarian response in complex emergencies.

    Motivated students who would like to have a more meaningful college experience than a lot of forgotten drunken nights. (Though if that's your thing, it's still easy to do that at American)
    Tips for prospective students

    Try talking to a few of the students while on campus and asking any questions you might have. The tour guides don't tell lies on the tours, but they are discouraged from discussing a few topics such as the gender imbalance.

    I don't think I'll be able to correctly judge this until I have graduated, but so far I think I am more than getting my money's worth. The classroom experience has been good and the speakers that come to campus have been excellent. I feel very fortunate to be where I'm at.
    Am enjoying being here

    It has been so easy to get involved on campus and even easier to do things off campus. D.C. is the best college town because everything is free. It's hard to complain about being bored when there are free events happening every day in addition to the free museums and free concerts.
    Am learning a lot

    American University is by far one of the most under ranked universities in my opinion. The courses I've taken thus far have all been taught by professors that are not only passionate about the subject but have also made major contributions to their field. I am continuously challenged and have begun to look at domestic and world affairs in a new light.

    Great for students that love diversity! There are so many different cultures represented here at AU. Great for students looking to get an International Relations degree. The School of International Services is the largest school of its kind in the United States and second largest in the world!
    Tips for prospective students

    Come to a campus visit! I came on a visit as a junior in high school and it was well worth it. Seeing the campus really helped me to make my decision about attending AU. Meet with your admissions counselor. My dad emailed my admissions counselor and I met with him during my campus visit. It was very helpful and possibly helped my chances of being excepted. It shows that you are very interested in attending the school and will help the admissions counselor to remember your name when he or she reads your application.
    Bang for the buck

    As you might know, American University has a rather high tuition rate. I believe that the conditions, for example, student housing, could be much better for the amount of money we are paying. But with the educational aspect in mind, the money is worth getting such a highly acclaimed degree/ education.
    Am enjoying being here

    Although American University has great academics, I have found the campus community to be lacking. As a sports fan, I was disappointed to find that sports are not very important at AU and the student body does not have much school spirit. But don't be discouraged, there are always plenty of activities to do on campus.
    Am learning a lot

    American University has a wonderful, intensive general education program. It gives a great foundation and helps you to become a well-rounded student. In addition, the School of International Service (SIS) has an excellent International Relations major/program. I am very happy with the amount of learning I'm receiving here.

    When visiting the campus, ask a lot of questions about how to obtain a scholarship. American University is one of the most expensive colleges in the nation, and the tour guides can share a lot of information about available scholarships and how to get one.

    Visit campus, and see if the area feels right to you. Speak to students in your intended field of study- AU students are always willing to talk about their experiences.

    AU is expensive. It's undeniable. However, if you can make it work with loans and scholarships, it is worth it for the internship opportunities alone.

    AU is located in a wonderful area of DC. It's close to the shops downtown, the monuments, and the museums while still having a distinct campus. There are a ton of student groups and activities to participate in- there is something for everyone.

    Great for these types of students

    AU is for students who are used to the big-city, cultural-hub, fashionista, rich kid lifestyle. Each school has a roughly different personality of students though: SIS: kids with dreams of living in Africa or Asia and improving the lives of indigenous tribes Kogod: kids who wear business suits to class and are never on campus because they're always at work in the city SOC: social media interns. Facebook all day. Everyday and they call it a job. SPA: the stereotypical AU student who works on the hill and touts their newest political argument in front of their senator friend. CAS: kids majoring in the most random things possible. Typically something having to do with History, Philosophy or Sociology, but typically it's all just about Social justice. Most of the professors are really really biased and don't allow different arguments into the classroom. Most of the students overall are competitive, non-athletic folks with an interest in politics. Lots of Europeans and international students also.
    Tips for prospective students

    Welcome week: don't go to EI. Stay with a close group of people that you know you can depend on, even if that's just your roommate. Don't get out of control and make mistakes that will stick with your reputation on campus for a long time. Classes: Get to know your professors, your TAs, and your classmates. When you know your professors, you may be able to use them as a contact later on in the semester, or in life. Sometimes they'll even take you into the city for drinks! Greek life: rush

    The school is ridiculously over priced and the administration is blind to student needs when it comes to financial aid or social well-being. The opportunities in the city and the location of the school, however, seem to outweigh the frustration most students encounter with the administration or AU Central (financial aid office).

    The social aspect is a little rough. People here aren't afraid to step on others to get to the top. Most of the people are from the east coast and aren't afraid to dominate the social scene with their fashion and strong personalities. Greek life runs the social atmosphere on weekends. Most of the social interactions between people are because of networking. Clawing your way to the top like an Eagle. Should probably be the school's motto.
    Academic Rigor

    The education is wonderful. It's a lot of work though. Get ready for long papers, huge readings, and lots of large assignments. I've never taken a quick scan tron test. Most of the classes are discussion, paper, and reading based so don't expect to be able to memorize and regurgitate information to your professor. Forming your own opinions is important. But overall, I learn MUCH MUCH MUCH more than anyone I know that's attending a state school.

    Walk around campus and talk with the students. Look at the dorms and try the food to see if you fit in there!

    It's really expensive, but I got great financial aid: a huge grant, some small federal grants, and a few loans. I'm still trying to decrease the loan amounts.

    The students are friendly and TDR's food is pretty good. Also, the campus is a national arboretum, so there are beautiful gardens and trees everywhere.
    Will learn a lot

    AU offers a lot and I am so psyched to start my freshman year! The School of International Service is superb.

    Make sure to supplement your in-class education with internships! It will not only give you great real world experience, but it will also allow you excellent networking opportunities.

    I have had a great time during my four years at AU. Not only did I receive an excellent in-class education, but I was able to supplement this part of my education with an internship every semester. In addition, the study abroad program that I did was excellent and gave me many great memories of my time as an AU student.

    Visit the school - do this for any school you want to apply at. Visiting schools tells them that you're serious, its not just another option or backup plan.

    There are times where I question the tuition, but then I see the career center (I think #3 in the nation), think of all the professors (that are former ambassadors, state department officers, advised this famous person, and so much more),Bender Arena with its fitness center (medium sized, but well equipped), and the green campus (a national arboretum), then I realize that I am getting my money's worth I just have to actually enjoy it. Sure, AU costs an absorbent amount, but there are opportunities to really get back that money that are sometimes overlooked.
    Will enjoy being here

    AU is in a great part of DC, it is as safe as you can get in a big city, has things to do on and off campus, and has great food options on and off campus.
    Academic Rigor

    AU is really one of the top Universities for my major. When I realized what I wanted to study AU was a no-brainer. The Professors are very knowledgeable and have experience in the field. There are multiple class options to fulfill the same requirement allowing you to shape your academic experience to your needs and aspirations.

    au is in a very quiet area of dc and campus security seems good. some frats have the pledges steal laptops during rush week, so beware.be city smart in other areas of dc.

    there is a smaller greek community at au. no on campus houses.

    lots of politics here at au, and each group has a club. also full of community service organizations and religious groups.

    there is a high nerd factor at au. most students are uber -smart and come into school with many college credits from ap classes.

    most dc colleges go trick or treating at the foreign embassies along mass. ave nw. most welcome it and show you into the buildings with a tour of their culture and a treat from that country.

    au has lots of international students and they all have clubs with socials and great food.(mostly free) lots of other event have receptions with free food.

    lots of social options and the school has tons of stuff going on all the time.... games, movies, political stuff. dc has a hugh club scene that you can get in without being 21. the city's museums are world class and mostly free.... great for a cheap date.

    very vegetarian friendly but that means very little meat entrees. the menu repeats too often. you have to be creative and take time to make something different, but it can be done.

    it is what you make of it. au's dorms are old but typical of most college dorms.

    these professors mean business. they even come to class in 3 piece suits when it is 95 degrees out.

    save all the money you can because au is crazy expensive.

    the campus police are helpful, well-trained, and there to protect the students, but with that being said, don't let them catch you break any laws!

    from the wild animal house frats to the community-service driven sororities, au has the perfect greek organization for everybody

    clubs are ok, they are mostly small but its a great way to meet people with similar interests. the eco-sense club has made a tremendous impact on greening au.

    gotta go with the greek life and club scene. the frats throw down hard nearly every weekend, hosting parties with over a hundred people! pregaming in the dorms is essential before hitting up the nightlife in dupont circle.

    the main cafeteria is an all-you-can eat wonderland with ice-creams, cereals, and pizza and burger bar, and (my favorite) so many vegetarian and vegan options!

    dorm life at au is great for freshmen trying to make some new friends. the rules are pretty strict but the furnishings are new and the buildings are clean.

    the classes are tough! luckily there are plenty of quiet spots to study around campus.

    Campus Safety

    Safety on campus is something that AU takes very seriously. The Public Safety building can be found on the south side of campus and there is always an officer walking around campus. We have the blue light phones on various parts of campus. Also Public Safety is not just concerned with the well being of students on campus but that of the city as a whole. We are located right across the street from Homeland Security and that always has made me feel a bit safer.
    Greek Life

    There is a greek life on campus. There are 7 Panhellenic Sororities and 12 North American Interfraternity Conference members. The majority of students are not a part of greek life and there is no pressure to join but know that it is a part of campus.
    Clubs and Activities

    If there is a club that you want to join then they have it here. I can't even tell you off the top of my head how many clubs we actually have here but I know that there is a lot. One of more unique ones to campus is our student government and all of the different aspects that they control. Anyone who wants to be involved in politics should consider joining.
    Great for these types of students

    International students. Those who are very interested in politics or international relations. We have really good programs for both of those majors.
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    You will see wonk on campus. It's a DC term and something you will come to have a love/hate relationship with. As far as traditions go it varies depending on what groups you are involved with. But putting everything in a short form is one of the most common. We really like acronyms. Location wise there is the beach, which is on south side and on a sunny day you can see why it is called that. Then the quad. That's about it.
    Bang for the buck

    Yes AU is a bit high in cost, but the aid greatly reduces the cost of attendance. For all that is available on campus, in terms of jobs and internships that are open to AU students it is totally worth the cost of attendance.
    What to do for fun

    There is so much to do in DC. Getting off of campus is one of the best things that you can do. Going to the monuments, the Smithsonian (which is free!!), the Kennedy Center, Rock Creek Park or anything else in DC. There is always something happening on campus as well, my Facebook invite box is always full of things to do. On campus one of the big things are the speakers that come. This past year Bill Clinton came to speak at that has been the highlight of my year, it was a free event. The University Center also puts on movies every two weeks. Also for those that want to there are frat parties on the weekend or you can go down to K Street and go clubbing.
    Food and Dining

    We have one traditional dinning hall, Terrace Dinning Room, known around campus as TDR. But there are other options as well. The main source for food is in the Mary Graydon Center where TDR is, as well as an Einstein's Bagels, a salad stop, Pronto (sandwiches), Eagle Express (box lunch), Salsa (Tex-Mex), and then Tavern (burgers). TDR, Eagle Express, Salsa, and Tav take meal swipes and everything else on campus takes Eagle Bucks or dinning dollars. In addition to what is in MGC there is a cafe in Ward, Katzen, SIS, the Mudbox in the library and a Subway by Bender Arena. Here is a tip on Eagle Bucks and Dinning Dollars. Dinning Dollars can only be used on campus where Eagle Bucks can be used off campus and on. I use my Eagle Bucks to buy food at Whole Foods.
    Dorm Life

    The majority of freshman students live on the south side of campus. One of those dorms is being remodeled this summer and the dorm I live in was done a year or two ago. AU is also building a few new dorms next year so that is going to be exciting. As far as the dorm rooms go they are about the average size of a college dorm. There is a lot of storage space to keep all of your things, but I also recommend getting under the bed storage from the container store by campus, Target which is about a 20 minute bus ride away, or at Ikea which you would have to drive to when you move in. Living on campus is great and there are always a lot of actives that the residence halls put on. You will have a RA on your floor and they are there to help. Get to know your RA and those on your floor. Each floor as a common room with a TV, kitchen and couches. My floor does a lot of cooking and its a nice break from eating at TDR all the time. Each floor also has a study room for the times that you just don't want to go to the library.
    Academic Rigor

    Professors demand a high quality of students. I have yet to have a professor where there was not a lot demanded out of me but I have come out of each class extremely happy that I took it. AU is set up with a system of general education requirements that make you take classes in 5 different areas so that you get a well rounded liberal arts education. As one of the few biology majors on campus I have also taken a theater class and have learned just as much as I have in my bio classes.
    Tips for prospective students

    Come visit campus! It is the best thing that you can do for yourself while looking at schools. Come in with an idea of which of our five colleges you would be in so that you can take a look at that college and ask questions on your tour that are related to that college. Have a list of things that you are looking for in a school and have things that you will not take off that list. That's how I knew AU was the right school for me.

    American is a school that is made up of a student body that passionate about several different areas but we all come together on campus. There is someone who is interested in just about every type of field and major that we have to offer and often people have multiple interests that will overlap with each other. To me AU brings the best parts of college and living in DC together.

    We are so safe! We have public safety but we are also in the safest quadrant of DC.
    Greek Life

    We have two types: social (the normal college greek like) and professional (which all have an aim like community service, honors, etc.) We have a small percentage so it's here if you want it, but it doesn't harm you in any way if you don't.
    Clubs and Activities

    We have over 150! There's basically something for everyone. And if we don't have what you want, it's really easy to make a club.
    Great for these types of students

    Students who want to live on a campus, but still in a city. Also, it's great for students who are serious about their studies but also want to go out and experience things.
    Bang for the buck

    Our school is really expensive, but we have great resources here too. We are number one in the nation for internships and we have a great career center that can help you find a job even once you're an alumni!
    Food and Dining

    Our dining hall, Terrace Dining Room, can have its ups and its downs but there is always something to eat. We also have a lot of other options such as a panini place, Einstein Bagels, the tavern, and our own place that's kind of like Chipotle.
    Dorm Life

    I love living in a dorm. They are pretty nice and almost all of them have wall units filled with storage. Living in a dorm has been a great experience because there is always someone around to hang out with.
    Academic Rigor

    The work at my school was the hardest part to get used to. However, it has made me a better student and person and I have much better time management skills than before. I also have learned how to not procrastinate.
    Tips for prospective students

    My number one tip is to take your college search seriously. Choosing the right college for you is a big decision and honestly, transferring is a pain. It's an exciting time, so make sure to get excited about it!

    AU is the best school in the nation for Internships. It really helps you widen your horizons with an extreme amount of opportunities. It is a tight community and I wouldn't change my decision for the world.

    What to do for fun

    There are a lot of different opportunities in DC, there are various clubs, and even museums to visit for free if you do the right things. This is definitely for the 18+ scene.
    Food and Dining

    There are various dining facilities on campus however they shut down the McDonald's and past Chik-Fil-A that used to be on campus. TDR can be very cliche after a couple of visits, and you will actually begin to think that the food isn't as appetizing.

    Majority of the dorms are definitely in a sustainable living condition, I would recommend not to stay in Hughes Hall which is the dorm that I have actually heard the most problems about it and it is the most unsanitary.

    AU's campus security is amazing. There are of course, the blue boxes all around campus, but campus security also has free self defense courses every few weeks. They also have the safe ride home program in which they will send a car to come get you in D.C., Virginia, or Maryland to get you back to campus safely.
    What to do for fun

    During the first week of school, there are carnivals, glow-in-the-dark soccer and Frisbee games, and movie nights on the quad and in the amphitheater. Students flock to these events for the free food and entertainment. These are also great socializing events for students. AU also has a huge variety of clubs for students, from the book club to the extreme sports club, and, of course, the quidditch team, there's a club for anyone.
    Food and Dining

    TDR is amazing. Most of the food is organic and grown locally, because the dining hall staff and students that help make decisions are environmentally conscious. The menu is different every day and one could go for every meal and never get bored of the food. They have a comfort food bar, an amazing salad bar, and a stir-fry station every day as well as several other stations around the cafeteria.
    Dorm Life

    You get a chance to pick your roommates through a survey and messaging before school, so if you should be able to find someone you like easily. The RAs are readily available for help in any problem, especially those issues that might crop up when first sharing a room with other people. The rooms themselves are small, but easily made cozy and home-like.
    Academic Rigor

    Pick good classes and you'll be challenged. Like any place, if you pick slacker courses, you'll get to slack off, but all the best teachers will be the ones that challenge you to do your best in their classes and those teachers are abundant here.

    It's the little things that set you apart from others that AU really appreciates in their students. If you can be unique and still maintain good standing in high school, AU will love you.

    American is great for positively active students who are interested in DC and what goes on in DC. They are very hard workers without anxiety about writing and they should be tolerant of gay people and Jewish people because they are represented wll on campus.

    American is a great school that has a lot going for it but it simply is not worth the $50,000+ tuition and expenses, especially with the condition of some of the dorms and the limited activities on campus. but one major positive is the opportunities that present itself in DC like internships, jobs, and whatever else the city has to offer.
    What to do for fun

    American doesn't not have a lot to do most of the time. We do get emails daily about acitvities, but if there are activities involving speakers or important figures on campus either they are during the day when no one has 3 hours to attend the events or one or two Big Name people come to speak at Bender Arena and tickets sell out in 5 min. I know the Activities club works on screening movies that are new (fresh out of theaters) but these are usually only once a month. The only real places to go for fun on campus is the gym to either work out or play basketball and swim or to hang out in the dorm lounges.
    Food and Dining

    The main dining hall on campus is above mediocre but is still missing something. I gave it 3/5 stars because although there are options for anyone who is vegan, vegetarian, or anything else, sometimes there just isn't anything good to eat. The weekends don't usually have a lot of choices but there are always the main go to foods that are there (soup, salad, hamburgers, sandwiches, waffles all day (in case you feel like breakfast at dinner), and homemade ice cream). Beside the main dining area there are the Tavern, Salsa, Megabytes, and an Asian cuisine place which also serve food. Although these places aren't as popular and widely known the variety of options at American is a plus!. Besides the other dining areas, there are little cafe/snack stores in the library and in a couple academic buildings on campus. They are ridiculously expensive but if you budget how much you spend eahc week it should be okay.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is mediocre. I don't think anyone would give dorm life at AU (especially as a freshman a 5/5 for many reasons 1. They are in the process of renovating the dorms on campus so some dorms are polished and new while others are falling a part and or in dire need of repairs and renovations. 2. Housing and Dining is also very up and down because they are constantly making changes and new rules to the dorm and they do not have a strong handle over tripling and detripling, nor do they have a fair criterion for room fees. The reason why I gave the dorms a 3/5 is because each floor has two washers and dryers, a lounge with a full kitchen, microwave, tv (flatscreen for some), and chairs and couches. The RA's are pretty friendly and very open to help if there are situations involving possible alcohol poisoning or other emergencies, and the communal bathrooms are cleaned daily.
    Academic Rigor

    Since I have only completed freshman year American University varies in academic rigor depending on the course and /or the School that the course is in. The courses for School of International Service, Justice Law, and Society, and literature are very rigorous and heavy reading and writing courses. I rated American 4/5 stars because it is a private university that has small to medium sized classes and highly intelligible professors that have done research, written books, and are experts in their field. With that being said, they expect a lot out of their students and are serious about teaching.
    Tips for prospective students

    The tips I would give to prospective students are simple. 1. Stay focused on your school work, especially during freshman year because you will impress your freshman professors and experience growth in you academics. DC is an amazing city to explore, go partying at Georgetown and Howard University, or what have you, but so many freshman students that I know are not returning or are in danger of loosing scholarships because they did not take freshman year seriously. 2. You have 150 or more meal swipes, $300 eagle bucks, and $200 dining dollars so use them wisely. DC is expensive and so is American that is why its smart to use your Eaglebucks (instead of your own money) at the available off campus vendors and restaurants because it comes with the housing and dining plan. And please don't get coffee and a bagel everyday before class because your money will dry up in a month or less. 3. Try to join and get a feel for the clubs on campus. American has a ton of clubs for almost anything you could imagine. When you go to the club fairs, follow up and go to a meeting. It is easy to just party and then sit around and do nothing but once you take steps to be a part of the school you will feel like a community and it doesn't hurt your resume. 4. If you are intending on majoring in International Studies/Relations, which is the largest school at American University make sure you understand the requirements and limitations as it is also the largest major on campus and it is difficult to have space to either double major or minor in other areas.

    American is a beautiful school in Northwest DC located in an affluent neighborhood and neighboring the Japanese and Korean Embassies. I rate the school at a 7 out of 10 based on the opportunities it presents to students who are looking to either intern on Capitol Hill or get involved in the district. The helpfulness of the professors and academic advisers vary depending on which school you are enrolled and International Service is the most popular School at the University.

    There is certainly a Greek Life presence at the school, but there are other options if being in a Fraternity or a Sorority isn't really your thing. It's not as if you won't have a social life if you don't go greek, but there are still plenty of options if you do choose greek life.

    Everything and anything! There is a rugby club which is really cool, and if there isn't a club that strikes your interest, it's very easy to start one!

    International students, bilingual students, and students interested in other cultures! There are also endless opportunities for people interested in the School of Public Affairs, because we live so close to the Capitol.

    To be frank, $50,000 is a lot of money. It is a private school, so the prices are a bit ridiculous. However, they do provide you with quite a few excellent services that you can't find on other campuses.
    What to do for fun

    You're in DC! There are any number of things to do, and if you ever get bored you can just run in to the city and go to museums, the zoo, shopping (up-scale or bargain shopping, plus tons of thrift stores!), or basically whatever else! There are also plenty of clubs to visit and frat parties to attend, so if you're in to that, don't worry! You can still have a good time here even though we're not a state school.
    Food and Dining

    Personally, I have mixed feelings about the food. You can definitely eat more healthily in the cafeteria at American than many other schools, and they provide gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. However, the food can get a bit old after eating there every day for nine months, and it's a little on the bland side.
    Dorm Life

    A group of about eight people from my floor became like family, so I loved being in a dorm. Yes, sharing showers is obviously annoying (don't forget shower shoes!), but as compared to most colleges the dorms are decently sized, and you get a ton of storage space!
    Academic Rigor

    Be ready for hard work! The classes demand dedication, but you really do learn a lot. American University provides you with an excellent education, with fantastic professors; if you are willing to work for it!
    Tips for prospective students

    Buy a metro card, first of all. You'll be in the city a lot, because there is so much to do there! In addition to that, if you are looking to grocery shop on a budget, go to the Safeway down the street; don't shop at CVS or Whole Foods.

Not only is it an academically excellent school, but American also provides an international student rate of around forty percent that makes the social life there very interesting.     Greek life is one of the best options for having fun. Don't be scared. It's not as bad as you think. It's not like the South where everything is Greek, but realistically, if you want to go out on weekends, Frats are some of the best places to do it. What that means is that all different kinds of people end up going Greek here. There are also several requisite club nights that you'll go to your Freshman year, and once you are 21, you'll spend a lot of time at bars and start migrating away from campus, but don't worry -- by then you'll be ready to.
    Food and Dining

    I love TDR. There, I said it. But the cafeteria does a great job of keeping around healthy, nutritious options. Tavern and Salsa do a good job of fulfilling your junk food needs. As for other options around campus, it's pretty awful. Tenleytown is okay, but it's ultimately too far away. Campusfoods takes too long and it's too expensive.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms are fine. Too expensive, but you'll meet some of your best friends. They just need more, and then upperclassmen would stick around as well.
    Academic Rigor

    Excellent professors, but sometimes I wish they would just lecture. Most classes are very participant-driven, but that fails when many of the students are only there for the grade.

    AU has one of the best IR programs in the country, an excellent Polisci programs, and surprisingly good programs for everything in between. I even hear great things about the science programs. But sometimes, it feels like there is a massive population of kids who do great things and will have great jobs, and then there is another group who is just there for a good time and a degree. I wish there were more people (like me!) who can work hard and play hard, and weren't always so concerned with political correctness.

    Although there are about 1,000 students in Greek Life it feels much smaller. There is a pretty big divide among students who are in greek life and those who aren't which some people really resent. However, Greek Life offers students a great sense of community and is a lot of fun.

    There are extremely limited options of dining on campus. There is only one dining hall on the main campus and I would rate the food about a 6 out of 10. There a few other greasy options but for the most part you will eat at the same place for every meal.
    Dorm Life

    The insides of the dorms are all the same no matter what dorm you are in for the most part. They are very spacious and there is a lot of closet room which is great. Depending on what dorm you're in the common rooms and bathrooms really differ. Some are really old whereas others are newly renovated. Housing is a little over 1,000 each month but all the dorms are conveniently right on campus.

    It can be very challenging or easy depending on the teacher you get. I've had some incredible professors but I've also had some lousy ones. Make sure to research prior to reigstering for classes.

    Take advantage of the resources around you and the locations when you come here. DC has so many opportunities and AU can help you to find those opportunities. If you're looking to have a great resume with lots of internships, this is the place for you. However, if you're looking to party everynight like they do at USCB this is not the place for you.

    AU is a very safe campus. You'll become familiar with the faces of our campus safety officers and spread throughout campus are blue call boxes that allow you to contact AU campus security at your exact location if there is ever an emergency. I've only heard of those call boxes being used once though, and that was to see if they really worked.

    AU has a very active Greek life, however we do not Sorority or Fraternity rows. Greek life housing is located within fifteen minutes of campus. Most Greek life students choose to live on campus and only utilize their Greek houses when they have special events.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are many different clubs and activities one can get involved in such as, pie club where you bake and eat pies, blends with benefits where you sing and perform at special events, or whatever club you want to start. AU is very open to new ideas; if you think there isn't a club that has something you're interesting in you are free to start that club yourself.

    American University is great for students who are ambitious and care passionately about doing well in school while having a little fun. American is also a great environment for those who love diversity and are not afraid to mix with ideas, beliefs, and values that are different from your own.

    On campus we have a strip of green land that we refer to as the beach even though there isn't any water in sight. Students love to sit out on the grass and pass time by tanning, playing music, throwing a football or even double dutch. The beach is a great place to watch the sunset. This isn't a tradition or location but it is unusual that we have black squirrels-they're pretty cool.

    American University is a private university, which means you will pay more here than if you went to a state college. However, American provides students with many academic tools that most students don't fully take advantage of or even discover until their second year here. While the cost of attendance is steep, I definitely would say it's worth the experiences that I've had and that I have yet to have.

    American University's events committee plans activities such as Welcome Week for new and returning students at the beginning of each school year, movie nights once a week, and once we even had laser tag. Being in DC provides students with metro access to be able to enjoy the fun of the city. You could go to the movies, the National Mall, museums, concerts, etc. Studying in a major city makes the possibilities for fun endless.
    Food and Dining

    American University has plenty of eateries on campus outside of the main dining hall. If the cuisine on campus isn't exactly what you're looking for, metro access is within a fifteen minute walk from campus if you want to venture out into the city for finer dining.

    Living with your classmates makes adjusting to college life easier. It's fun and lively. There seems to be a residence for each type of student here at American. If you are very energetic and young at heart, there are the residence halls on south side campus but if you're looking for rooming in a more relaxed environment there is north side of campus.

    Being in DC makes everyone politics-crazy so American University's School of Public Affairs and other public service curriculum are very popular. If politics aren't your thing, that's okay too because each set of faculty for different curriculum is dedicated and enthusiastic about what they teach and they want you to do well. Keep in mind though, doing well doesn't mean just getting by. These professors will push you but their pushing only shapes you into a better student.

    Get involved! Freshman year at college can be very scary at times but it helps knowing people and making friends who share your interests. American University offers students a variety of different student activities and volunteer opportunities that will help you get settled in comfortably. Being involved and busying yourself with activities and people you enjoy spending time with keeps your mind off of missing home.

    Campus always feels very safe, and it is in a nice neighborhood of DC. However, last year the school had a huge problem with laptop thefts- mine got stolen out of my dorm room. They definitely increased measures to find the person responsible for the 40+ laptops stolen...but as far as I know no one was ever caught. Besides that, I have never felt unsafe walking around at night.
    Greek Life

    I am not involved in Greek life, but I know many people who are. It is out there as an option, but does not run the whole school. It is also not non-existent, though. Its a good balance.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many clubs, and they all tend to be very involved and active. We are a Division I sports school, and even though we don't have a football team, basketball tends to be well-supported. The arts programs are great, and there are also student run groups like the AU Players, Rude Mechanicals, and four A Capella groups that perform on and off campus. Next year there will be a new Center for Diversity and Inclusion, made up of the former GLBTA resource center, Multicultural Affairs, and the Women's resource center. So much to do!

    American is expensive, there is no doubt about it. However if you can swing it, there are many aspects of an AU experience that are unparalleled. Sure, it may seem to cater to international relations/political science, but almost all the programs are gaining national recognition- just look up the Kogod School of Business or the theater department. Few other universities offer so much involvement in the international scene, and few other universities make it possible to get such great first hand experience while in school (through internships, etc) for ALL fields- not just the ones you may think of in relation to Washington, DC.
    What to do for fun

    DC seriously has so much to offer. Museums are free, of course. Not to mention the fabulous cultural offerings- there is a killer theater scene. Wonderful restaurants, all easy to access from the metro stop by campus. On campus, they try to organize student events, and some of them can be fun- improv and movie nights, carnivals on the quad, etc. There is a party scene if that is what you are into, but all off campus.
    Food and Dining

    There is one main dining hall-TDR. This can be great, or it can be...less than great. Honestly it depends on the day. However, going to TDR is sure to be a social experience. They have great options for vegan and gluten free eaters, and were very accommodating during passover for those that celebrated it. Its also nice that TDR has to go boxes. The other campus eateries can get expensive, but they are nice to have around. Too much of my money went towards coffee and bagels from Mega Bytes and/or the Eagles Nest.
    Dorm Life

    Honestly, the freshmen dorms can be kinda disappointing- but most of them are under renovation this summer! After they finish renovating all of Letts Hall, I believe all the dorms will have been updated within the last several years and should all be pretty nice. They are also building several brand new dorms. Dorm community is friendly; my floor was very close because we were in the University College program- a great way to get to know people.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes are absolutely challenging, but I have never felt that they were unbearable. American attracts the type of students that care about their school work so you most likely wont find yourself floundering- there are always study groups, etc. to help you out. Also, in my experience every professor I have had has been extremely approachable and helpful. Almost all classes are small. If you did well in high school, especially in APs/IB, academics here should be a natural continuation.
    Tips for prospective students

    Leadership and strong academics seem to be important. American is big on diversity though so don't feel like anything about your application would definitely discount you- it might just set you apart. It is harder to get accepted every year, so I think visiting and/or showing you are seriously interested would help.

    There is always something going on, whether its a club meeting, a guest speaker, a performance, or a party. Plus, if you don't want to do anything on campus, DC is just a Metro or Bus ride away.

    TDR is good, and has lots of organic and vegan/vegetarian options, but it can get old after a while. Also, food in the Eagle's Nest, MegaBytes, and other on campus eateries is rather expensive.
    Dorm Life

    Living in Roper Hall last year meant that I was living with about 50 people, as opposed to the several hundred in the residence halls. We became a huge family, and still communicate over the summer.
    Academic Rigor

    Non- Gen Ed courses are fairly challenging. Even in the Department of Performing Arts, professors are demanding and expect a lot out of you for your grade.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be aware that this is not a school for sciences; the School of International Service, Kogod School of Business, and Arts Management Masters Program are the jewels in the school's crown. Those are the best, but the others (with the exception of the sciences) get pretty good attention and funding. Also, do as many AP courses as possible; they are invaluable in clearing out your Gen Ed classes that you need to graduate.

    AU is very LGBT friendly, and has one of the best internship programs of any university in the country. It's nice to be in DC and have all of the opportunities that come with that, but then having an actual campus with a quad and trees that makes it seem like the city is far away.

    Campus Police is a very active presence in the area, although hardly needed, since AU is in one of the safest parts of DC.

    While not of the same class as one might find at a major state or party school, AU nonetheless has a thriving greek life with a number of different fraternities and sororities. There is no Greek Row, although there are Greek Games and plenty of parties. Fraternities at AU do not charge to gain entry to parties.

    AU has a wide variety of different clubs and student organizations, which are generally well funded and active on campus. There are clubs for every political party and issue, sports organizations, and game and hobby clubs.

    AU is great for students who are really passionate about politics or international affairs, and for those who want to go to school in the city without being inside the city 24/7.

    AU is the most politically active campus in the country. Accordingly, there are an unusually high number of political speakers and politically motivated events, almost all of which are usually being protested by one or another of the school's many clubs or political organizations.

    AU is absurdly expensive. Absurdly. Add the high cost of living to AU's already high tuition and dorm prices and you get what is indisputably one of the most expensive schools in the country. The quality of education is good, but hardly worth the price.
    What to do for fun

    One of the best parts of AU is that, being in DC, it has a TON of different things to do. There are a bunch of different museums and landmarks to visit, restaurants with every kind of cuisine imaginable,and concerts and sports events to go to. DC also has a vibrant nightlife, with many bars and clubs to go to. Several clubs are even 18+ on select nights, usually weekends or Tuesdays.
    Food and Dining

    Meal plans at AU come in several varieties, most of which have varying amounts of meal swipes, dining dollars, and eagle bucks. Meal swipes are used at the fewest number of on-campus locations and give access to the basic dining halls, as well as a place to get sandwiches and a tavern style grill. This food is average/mediocre quality, although the dining halls notably have a decent variety of vegan and vegetarian options. Dining dollars and Eaglebucks are refillable and come in dollar amounts. Dining dollars are usable at all on-campus locations, and give discounts at several locations. Eaglebucks are usable anywhere on campus and at several locations in the area, but don't give any discounts and are basically a substitute for cash in the area.
    Dorm Life

    The rooms are small and, although designed for two students, are often shared by three( a triple). RAs are friendly and make a genuine effort to build a community on their floor. There are common and study spaces, but the main reason for giving this 3 stars is the room size and occasionally cleanliness ( or lack thereof) .
    Academic Rigor

    The workload isn't overwhelming, but it will be substantial and has to be taken seriously.Make good use of office hours, as students who do are usually the ones who do well. The library is usually open 24 hours a day during the weekdays and all through finals, but it gets so crowded its important to find other places to study too.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved. AU throws tons of resources at freshmen, but they only help if you take advantage of them. Go to the career center early and make friends with one of the advisers, they can help you land an internship as early as freshman year and will follow-up with you throughout your college career. Also make sure to leave Tenleytown whenever possible, too many AU students get caught in the Tenley Trap of never wanting to leave the area around campus.Finally, get in the habit of going to your professors' office hours.

    AU is great because of its location, the resources available to help get you an internship, and the incredibly diverse faculty and student body. The downsides are that the dorm rooms are kind of small and everything in DC is super-expensive. It's a great school to go to if you're a serious student or career oriented person, and if you're really interested in foreign affairs or politics.

    Some of your classes are going to be very difficult, others aren't. So be sure to have a good balance of the hard and easy classes in your schedule.

    The community in the dorms is strong and while our rooms aren't the Hilton, they are nice enough for dorm rooms. Things are clean.

    You'll see Public Safety officers riding around on segways, but in general they aren't needed. Any issues like reports of sexual harassment usually occur off-campus, but the Public Safety officers still put out reports across campus to alert the students of the situation and give safety tips to avoid dangerous situations. There are some instances of laptops being stolen from places like the library if students leave their laptops unattended, but laptop locks are available to check out from the library like you would a book, so keeping your belongings safe is easy.
    Greek Life

    You don't have to be involved in Greek Life if you don't want to, and a lot of the fraternities and sororities on campus pledge themselves towards scholarly endeavors (like pre-law) or community service. It seems like less than half of the students on campus are in a fraternity or sorority, though this may be because they aren't allowed to keep their houses on campus. This doesn't stop students from finding their way to frat parties, but AU is a dry campus so it's probably better that the frat houses are kept off-campus.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are a lot of clubs and activities on campus, from club sports to language clubs to community service fraternities. AU will have a lot of university activities days where representatives from these groups will sit at tables (often on the Quad) so you can see what your options are.

    AU is great for students who want to experience DC, from internships to the night-life. In particular, students interested in politics or international relations find a home at AU.

    On the Quad, you will frequently see carnival-esque games, farmer's markets, and AU traditions such as Coming Out Day and a celebration for marriage equality where you can be married for a day!

    AU seems to be expensive, though a lot less so after scholarships and grants are taken into account. Even so, the quality of education you receive, both in general education courses and major-specific courses, are fantastic. The political science and international relations majors have professors who actually work in the field, including ambassadors and those professors who are only able to admit that they work in intelligence but can't tell you where they work or what they do...
    What to do for fun

    You are in DC, close to the metro and a lot of bus lines that can take you through the city. Experience it! Take a self-guided tour of the city. Visit the Smithsonian museums (which are free!). Walk along the Potomac. And definitely take part in DC's Restaurant Week, where popular (but expensive) restaurants offer special discounts to eat fantastic food at a better rate.

    The campus has recently focused on providing information on what is gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian, which has been great for the students here. There are too many fast-food options that students turn to, though Subway provides a relatively cheap alternative if you prefer a healthier lifestyle.

    The dorms can be pretty cramped, especially as the school's popularity grows. But the campus is expanding starting in 2013 to add more dormitories, which will make dorm life more comfortable.

    This honestly depends on the program, and on the professor. If you major in International Studies, Business, or Literature, the classes will be challenging. I have heard from other majors such as Education majors that those classes are not particularly challenging.

    Don't be turned off of AU just because of its high tuition. It is a private institution, but it also has great financial aid and scholarship opportunities for students that make this school more affordable.

    Although a lot of students do not participate in greek life, it seems to be quite prominent throughout campus. Everywhere you walk you can see someone wearing greek letters, and there are events held every weekend by the fraternities and sororities. There are also professional fraternities for business, law, and other specific majors.

    The clubs on campus are very active; they oftentimes bring important speakers to campus or hold fun events. The AU Democrats and AU Republicans are two of the largest clubs. If nothing catches your interest at the activities fair at the beginning of the year, you can even create your own club!

    The dorms are not too bad, most have been renovated in the past few years or are currently being renovated. Most freshmen live in a community style dorm located on the same part of campus. The people are very welcoming and it is easy to make friends with the people on your floor.     The courses can be very challenging, but if you put in the work that the professors require and attend office hours, you will have a greater chance of being successful.

    The academics here great and they really push in the right direction. It's awesome that the classes are online because it's seems like your professors tend to be even closer than mortar and brick schools with their students. In online schools you really need to check in daily because you can miss something very important if you don't use your time wisely and if you are not self-motivated.

    When applying make sure look for some career choices you are most interested in and where you can benefit from. Actually call your counselors and administrators they are very happy to hear from prospective students. Make sure look for different scholarships and grants that you can apply for which will only help take away some the cost burdens of going to school getting and education.

    My school (American Military University) has some of the best instructors and student counselors around. They tend to focus on the working adult which is good for me because I'm currently in the military. Lastly this school has some of the best tuition rates compared to most others.

    What to do for fun

    There are plenty of ways to have fun on campus and off campus alike. Performance classes put on free recitals at the end of the semester to showcase the progress of students, and the drama department performs regularly. Basketball games are regularly announced, and the campus museum is open to everyone. There is an abundance of events and activities off campus -- visiting the memorials and museums around the national mall, going to a Nationals game, shopping, going to a movie, attending live performances at one of D.C.'s many theaters, and going out to eat with friends are several of the many things to do for fun.
    Food and Dining

    There is a variety of options from which to choose for food: for a few EagleBucks (money on your school ID) you can buy ingredients or instant meals at the Eagle's Nest, or a sandwich at Subway or Megabytes. Salsa, Tavern, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and the Salad Bar are all located on the first floor of the Mary Graydon Center, and the terrace dining room (TDR) is located on the ground floor. There are four main course stations, two salad bars and a dessert station all of which serve healthy and delicious food. If you get tired of one or the other, there's always the option of going into town to grab a bite.
    Dorm Life

    American University freshmen usually live on south campus in Letts, Roper, Centennial and Anderson halls. Each floor has a communal lounge and a study lounge, and two bathrooms. Most floors are co-ed, but there is are several gender-specific floors. Students living in Roper hall are permitted to live in co-ed rooms. There is a designated RA for each floor to ensure the safety and well-being of his/her residents.
    Academic Rigor

    The professors at American University are dedicated to improving and cultivating the abilities of their students. That said, the courses are not particularly easy, as they require students to actively participate during in-class discussions and spend significant time studying material outside of class. Classes tend to be challenging, thus stimulating the growth of knowledge and interest in each field.

    Find opportunities to find friends. Become involved in an organization, find a job, go to university-organized events, and hang out in your lounge. There are concerts in the Mary Graydon Center (student union) every few months, and there are plenty of clubs to choose from.

    If you can find a job quickly, it is worth it. From what I heard, many students come out with at least $30K in student loans. The housing is expensive and not to my standards. The food plans are expensive, but convenient, although I prefer cooking for myself. It's cheaper and I know what's in it.

    DC offers a lot to do, depends on your preferences. Anyone can find something to do.

    They offer a variety of foods from traditional American to international foods in a buffet style dining facility. The dining room is clean and bright. There are also coffee shops and fast food restaurants on campus and near campus.

    I did not like the dorms at American. They are small and feel cramped. The bathroom facilities are in the hallway and do not offer much privacy. I am considering alternative arrangements for my housing or paying more to live in a suite on campus.

    I am planning to attend in 2013, so I haven't had a chance to take classes, but from what I know, they require to have additional English and Math exams. I think it is a good thing because they ensure that the students have the skills necessary to be successful in advanced classes, especially research. I took some college classes in my high school, and most of the classes transferred and were applied towards my degree.

    Make sure to visit the campus before you commit, get the feel of it, meet the faculty ans staff, as well as the fellow students with whom you will share many classes.

    AU has lots of academic and social programs that really help students get the most out of their education, but you have to be proactive and go out to find them. This university really prides itself in having one of the highest percentages of graduating students with a job and they do everything they can to keep up that reputation, so they really make sure that all students are fully prepared to enter the workforce after graduating. They host career fairs, help you write your resume and cover letters, tell you what to wear, practice interviewing skills, and provide lots of networking and internship connections. If you take advantage of these opportunities, you'll be set do enter the field you chose.
    What to do for fun

    You are in DC!! Go to the capitol, have a picnic on the National Mall, take pictures in front of the White House, get a library card at the Library of Congress (cool place to study for finals), go shopping in Bethesda or Georgetown. We are located really close to a metro and you can access anywhere within a few stops. DC United and Nationals games often have college nights where you can get cheap tickets and have lots of fun. Of course, our campus also hosts lots of events, and international events, like Holi, and Indian tradition where students dance to blaring music on the quad and through paint at each other for 2 hours. If we do something, we go all out.
    Food and Dining

    Although AU gives you $400 in additional dining money on (and in some cases off) campus--which is seriously awesome--the main dining hall its self (TDR) could be a little better. Its a buffet style dining hall that has lots of options, as well as international ones to serve our global community. If you have a specific diet or allergy, don't worry, your covered. TDR has plenty of options for gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, organic, locally grown, or whatever other dietary preferences your could possibly think of. Wednesdays are also Mac-n-Cheese days that everyone goes crazy over.
    Dorm Life

    Of the freshman dorms, Anderson Hall is more studious and interested in either global, social, political, environmental issues, etc. Letts Hall is more party-oriented (but still relatively low-key) and they host lots of really cool events throughout the year. The rooms themselves have lots of storage place, which is a giant plus. People generally go to bed around 2am, so if you need to catch an early nights sleep, be sure to bring a small fan to block out any potential noise.
    Academic Rigor

    Students here really care about their studies, so you'll always have people who are trying to do their best in all of their classes. Its really nice, because everyone really encourages each other to do well and get the best grade they can. Professors are also really passionate about their subjects, but their main concern is to make sure their students succeed. They're really great about office hours and making sure you are doing well with the material. Classes are also really small so professors have a lot more time and ability to really connect with students, that really really helps with your grades. That being said, the academic environment at AU is in no way competitive. No one will be gouging your eyes out to be top of the class. Its amazing because its like getting a higher-level education without the higher levels of stress, anxiety, and competition with your classmates. Everyone is really chill and helpful.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be sure to carefully review the course catalogue before choosing your classes, as it is absolutely wonderful in laying out recommended courses for different majors or course directions. Something that is really awesome about AU is that it is ridiculously easy to switch between majors and schools here, so make sure that all of your GenEDs fit many different requirements for different majors if your not exactly sure what you want to study yet. Also, the unlimited meal plan is completely unnecessary and way to expensive. You'll be just fine with a 150 meal plan (don't worry, thats what I have, and I eat a lot!).

    American University is perfect for people who are passionate about an issue, or are looking for something to be passionate about. No matter what it is, how big or small, people here will support you in standing for what you believe in. AU is located so close to the capitol, which calls for a lot of politically motivated people on campus, but there is not pressure to be involved if politics isn't really your thing. People here will help you challenge your opinions, but also help you support them. This is in no way a get-in-your-face campus about issues either. There are often a lot of events on campus and protests, but the atmosphere here is one of the most open-minded I've experienced.

    On all the college tours, you'll hear that Greek life is only a small percentage of the student population. However, wherever you go on campus, you'll be sure to see someone who went Greek and they make their presence known. They take over the tables in Marketplace and when the sun shines, the Quad and the steps of MGC is where you'll sight them the most. If you want a guaranteed social scene every weekend as well as a wide group of individuals that you can call brothers or sisters, then go Greek.
    What to do for fun

    For those students over 21, the nightlife of D.C. has much to offer - there are a lot of great bars and clubs all over the city that are frequented by students from Georgetown, GW, Catholic, and AU. For those under 21, the monuments, shopping, and just wandering the city will provide most entertainment. In regards to the party scene, unless you have a fake, you'll only be drinking at frat parties or house parties. But many of the clubs in the city have under 21 nights on Fridays that provide another option.
    Food and Dining

    There is one main dining hall - Terrace Dining Hall (better known as TDR) - with the classic stations of salad, grill, pasta/pizza, and wok. In 2013, there should be implemented several other food options, such as Elevation Burger and Starbucks. They will join the ones already on campus such as Einstein Bros. Bagels, Megabytes, Eagle's Nest, and Tavern (got to get the tenders!).
    Dorm Life

    The dorms are the hub of the freshmen life. Letts and Anderson Halls are mainly freshmen dorms and you will find the L.A. quad to be the center of the social scene for those living there. The dorms are the best places for get togethers and meeting new people; and while they do have study rooms on each floor, they mainly serve as another social setting. So head to the library or someplace quiet to get work done.
    Academic Rigor

    Your education is what you make of it. There are always those that blow off their readings, skip class, and don't make the most out of the connection with their professors. However, the majority of students at AU respect and admire their professors and appreciate the quality of teaching and education they are offered. The ones that take advantage of the small class sizes and office hours provided by their professors will find themselves both successful in the classroom as well as when they move on.
    Tips for prospective students

    It's quite beneficial to come into your freshman year with credits already earned - so do take those AP/ IB courses or any CLEP exams. They make a difference, and help you get out of the general education requirements! Also, don't be afraid to experiment your first semester if you're still unsure what you want to do. There is a freshmen forgiveness policy that does not count a class with a C- or below as part of your GPA and you are allowed to retake the class for credit if you wish.

While it's main pull comes from the International Studies program, it's location in Washington, D.C. is ideal for many different career paths.
