Great for these types of students

Party animals, athletes, social butterflies, people that like being around a lot of people, chemical free people, non chemical free people, people who like studying in quiet, out of state and country people, older people, commuters, people who have children, people who like morning classes, night classes, and online classes. Also people who like cold, snowy winters and muddy springs. People who want to make a lot of friends, friendly people, people who like good and bad food, people who like free on campus activities.

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the campus before deciding. It is quite large compared to other schools in Maine. Don't get the biggest meal plan, you won't need it. Make new friends, don't just stick with the old ones. Don't take bio 100 unless you have to. Order your books in the online bookstore before the semester starts. Make sure you get a MaineCard during orientation, or be prepared to wait 3 hours for one.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many free on campus activities and things to do every night of the week. There are also many concerts and plays that cost money but are worth it.

    Am learning a lot

The professors offer a lot of information in classes. Many professors have fantastic teaching techniques and are definitely worth while.

Those that love community, UMaine really is it's own community within the town of Orono. If you go to UMaine you can't be afraid of snow or cold weather. It does get really cold in the winter sometimes walking to class!

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all the school has to offer. Don't sit in your dorm all day doing nothing or you will be miserable. Go to class, teachers typically always ask questions on the exam about what they said in class. Take good notes, but don't write everything down. If you're having trouble in a class don't be afraid to ask for help. UMaine has many free tutoring programs on campus that you should take advantage of.

    Bang for the buck

Paying a lot for a school is really just paying for a brand name version of any product. UMaine is a public university and is on the low end as far as price is concerned, but it is a perfectly suitable for any student especially those who are not entirely sure what they want to do. Don't choose a college based on it's name or price. In the long run what matters more is the fact that you got a college education and enjoyed the environment you were in while doing it.

    Am enjoying being here

I have gotten involved in much that UMaine has to offer. I have danced on the dance team which performs at football games and other campus events. I have also participated in theater productions on campus. There are also intramural sports, dance clubs, and other academic clubs and student organizations on campus. Residence halls are always organizing activities for students to do as well. Near campus there are several night clubs for dancing. On Wednesday nights there is always a free showing of a recent movie. There's always something to do on campus!

    Am learning a lot

I am currently in the Honors College which has not only improved my academics, but my views of the world and life itself. The University of Maine offers a variety of courses that allow me to learn a ton of new things. In order to get the most out of all that UMaine has to offer, one must apply themselves and take all the opportunities that are given.

    Campus Safety

There are blue lights set up around the campus for a student to use if in need of the police . All you have to do is push the button and the campus police will come for you. RA's give the student the campus police number so if they need to call. The campus is really safe overall.

    Greek Life

There is over 900 student in greek life on campus, 8 men’s fraternities or 7 women’s sororities. Greek life has been at UMaine since 1874 and is a big part of the school and to those who want to be involved in it. For many students it enhances there time here at UMaine and it is a great community. They support academic support/excellence, and show leadership in the community. Greek life can either be apart of your experience here at UMaine, or it does't have to be at all, it is up to the student. But greek life for many students here is a great experience.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many music ensembles that are open to anyone on campus, theater productions, there are many sports teams, honors programs, miscellaneous clubs and organizations that you can be apart of. Literally there is something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

UMaine is great for anyone! The school has lots to offer. Don't be looking to not put effort into your school work though, you have to keep up on that to get good grades. At UMaine you can make the most of your college experience.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Maine is a state university so it is less expensive than going to a private school. As much as getting your bang for the buck, you get out what you put in. You can have the best college experience here or you could have the worst. UMaine has everything you need gives it all to you, just right at your finger tips. But it is up to you to make the experience and get what you want out of it.

    What to do for fun

The campus is full of beauty in the landscape and building but it also filled with plenty of fun activities to take part in. The Union, which is the student center, hold dances, and different events of that such throughout the year, then there is also many concerts by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, other artists, comedians, and more that perform in the Collins Center for the Arts, and every wednesday night there is a free movie playing. This is just a tiny bit of the thing to do on campus. There is much more to do around the UMaine campus and in the center of Orono, the perfect college town, or down the street in Bangor at the mall or anywhere else. UMaine is in the perfect location for no matter what you are looking for. It is that great campus, the perfect college town, the rural , and the suburban all in one!

    Food and Dining

The University of Maine has the most dining options out of any of the colleges I looked at. There are three all you can eat dining halls on campus, and there are multiple markets, coffee shops, ect. We even have a restaurant on campus called the Bears Den. The food is really good and you have plenty of food options no matter where you go to eat on campus. The dining program here is also very suitable to any food allergy, vegetarian/vegan diets that any person may require.

    Dorm Life

First Years are required to live on campus, after that it is up to the student on whether or not they would like to continue living on campus. The dorms are great, in most cases it is two people to a dorm room. There are many dorm halls to pick from for both First year and upperclassmen. They even have themes to some of the dorms (i.e. substance free, outdoor adventure, honors, innovation, ect.) The dorm life is just wonderful, it is a great sense of community and just wonderful to live in.

    Academic Rigor

The Classes at the University of Maine are very informative and challenge you as a student to think and work. The teachers are friendly and have impressive degrees, you are learning from so of the best here at UMaine. It is impossible to walk out of any of your classes without learning something. Based on your major the amount of classes you are required to take a semester can fluctuate but, if you make sure you take what is required of you and work hard the class won't be as bad. Make sure you keep up on your work though, the teachers are excellent and expect excellence out of you.

    Tips for prospective students

College is life is much different, whether you've already been told this or not you can't expect to not work/study and get good grades. Put effort into what you are doing, you're working toward a major that you choose. The University of Maine has multiple options for majors, minors and even graduate level degrees. So what ever you are interested in UMaine can help you fin the right major for you.

    In three sentences

UMaine is a very welcoming community that embraces diversity. It has a beautiful campus that is full of many activities to take part in. And UMaine is innovative, it is working hard toward many sources green technology and other research.

    Bang for the buck

My only grievance with the university, although they offer a lot of aid. It is very expensive for a public university. Its very frustrating to know that Canadian students get a cheaper tuition rate than an out of state US citizen.

    Am enjoying being here

Had a blast, once you find the niche of people you get along with, things will go great. its rare that you see somebody who has trouble functioning in day to day campus life

    Am learning a lot

A variety of classes and options available to fit almost any schedule needed. You with learn tons from a diverse group of professors that know what they're doing.

Great for these types of students

As long as you are somewhat rugged and don't mind being far away from anything close to a big city.

    Tips for prospective students

-Watch out for campus police, they love to mess with kids -get on your RA's good side from the start. it helps a lot -go to class -take notes

    Bang for the buck

The school is a great price for in-state students, not the best for out of state students. check your major though, some majors are eligible for northeast regional discount. basically if your state(if it participates) does not offer a major that the school has then you get pricing in between instate/out of state

    Am enjoying being here

I love the kids here, everyone is nice and easy to get along with. this is just part of the college experience however, the way the administration of the school is run plays a big role too. The administration here is sometimes reasonable, other times not. they also do go off of here-say when in trouble

    Am learning a lot

As long as you actually go to your classes and pay attention you will learn a lot. the teachers really know there stuff and are usually very willing to help.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to have an enjoyable yet rewarding college experience, the University of Maine is the way to go.

    Bang for the buck

Your money will not be wasted here. You will enjoy life on and off campus. And not many colleges can say you'll have fun learning, but we can.

    Will enjoy being here

I enjoy being on campus. It has so much life to go around and with neighboring forests and state parks to explore the wilderness, whats not to love.

Athletic, social, aspiring to attain more knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan to go to the school and walk into admissions with every paper you could ever use if you want to get information from them.

    Bang for the buck

Really expensive... and admissions has one office for all of it's thousands of students. Very hard to deal with.

    Will enjoy being here

On campus yes, though the surrounding city didn't have that much to offer.

    Will learn a lot

Very great potential for learning a lot, wonderful facilities, and professors.

Great for these types of students

I would recommend UMaine to anyone. Especially Maine residents on a low college budget. Although money shouldn't limit where you go, it sure helps to know you wont have to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars when you graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your big lectures done with and stay focused. Most likely you wont have too many of those after your first year, so just don't get lazy in the big classroom setting. It'll get easier when the class shrinks.

    Bang for the buck

You could find much better colleges, but for a Maine resident paying 20k/year, this is quite a bargain for what you get from it. It's probably even worth it for the out-of-staters too. So I'd say they're doing pretty good here.

    Am enjoying being here

There isn't very much to complain about here at UMaine. The campus is big enough to have plenty to see, but small enough to not have to walk a half hour to get to classes. The foods pretty good too.

    Am learning a lot

Some teachers are awesome, some are not so awesome, but those are things you'll see anywhere. Fortunately, I have had very fair professors so far, and this helps make me willing to participate more and get the most from the courses.

parents love the cops here, not sure all the students do.

polar dip, dive in to a pool in the middle of january. it's not for everyone that's for sure.

    Bang for the buck

college is pricey but i am making it happen by working during free time and receiving some aid from my parents. i have zero scholarships and sometimes struggle purchasing the books i need. i have to spend my spare money wisely to pay for school so i can pay my loans when i graduate.

    What to do for fun

you name it we got it. and if it doesn't exist you can start a club.

    Food and Dining

with three different major dining halls and an abundance in pizza delivery services, food is never an issue. the dining halls have a wide variety of foods and satisfy most everyone. who dislikes a buffet?

    Dorm Life

dorm life is dorm life, small rooms and everybody shares a toilet. resident assistants go out of their way to provide various events and activities to keep everyone entertained.

    Academic Rigor

as an engineering student i experience a dynamic workload including lab memos, team projects, and homework assignments. the work can be very challenging at times and high stress, but the faculty is very willing to help.

    Tips for prospective students

be prepared to work hard and be very busy at times, but acquire unique knowledge and valuable skills.

    In three sentences

i really enjoy the university of maine because their mechanical engineering program challenges me in the academic fields i enjoy. the staff and facilities are extremely useful and aid me to acquire the desired skills of a college graduate.

    Campus Safety

Campus has it's own police department, with 24/7 patrol around campus. There are emergency stations on every corner and hardly anything happens on campus because of it.

    Greek Life

Can't really speak for this as I'm not in a frat, but there are plenty of fraternities who are always willing to accept new pledges.

    Clubs and Activities

Tons of club/intramural sports, frats, sororities, computer/gaming clubs, as well as many pickup activities with people around campus.

Great for these types of students

Anybody who enjoys being around other people, studying in groups, and having a fun/healthy learning environment.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Buff Chic Wednesday (Unlimited buffalo chicken wraps at York dining hall). Rumble on the Hill (various competitions between dorms). Healthy High 5k (Run/walk on April 20th at 4:20 PM).

    Bang for the buck

Not entirely sure what this means, so I'm going to assume it means getting your money worth. Being a full time student at the moment, I couldn't really speak for myself. However, I know quite a few graduates who have made the most of their degree and currently have full time jobs.

    What to do for fun

Umaine is a class A athletic school, so if you're a sports fan there is a game pretty much every week here. Hockey is hands down the best, as the stadium fills up and gets loud, even if they're losing 5-0. Aside from that, there are tons of students willing to play video games, backyard sports, or anything else, you just gotta get out there and meet people!

    Food and Dining

The food at Umaine dining halls are decent. It depends on your taste as well as the day of the week (certain days have different items), but there are marketplaces located on campus for those of you who just want a bowl of ramen or a hot pocket. Also, there are many pizza places located just off campus and they all deliver right to your dorm.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Umaine is awesome. The RA's for the most part are cool people, and there are tons of first year students just like you trying to make friends. Literally stepping outside of your room will allow you to make three or four friends. The dorm size is decent, comfortably fits two, and there are no real ridiculous guidelines to follow (just don't have illegal operations going on in there).

    Academic Rigor

Again, this is what you make of it. I am currently a Biology student enrolled in the Honors Program. I have time to myself, but the classes are pretty rigorous. Studying and doing work is essential in each of my classes. However, for some students the classes are not nearly as difficult. It all depends on your schedule and intended major.

    Tips for prospective students

While this school can be very fun, it is what you make of it. If you sit in your room all day you will not make many friends, or do very well in class. Get out there, get involved, and make friends with mutual classmates.

    In three sentences

Whether you are a stereotypical jock, party animal, nerd, or somewhere in between, you will fit right in with the University of Maine. The campus is pretty large, but not too overwhelming for first-year students.Overall, I love it here, even if it is a little far from home.

    Campus Safety

at the university of maine, everywhere you go you will see a call box with a blue light on the top of it. from each of these, you can call the police if you are being followed, harassed, or just scared and want a ride back to your dorm.

    What to do for fun

on the weekends there is a club for adults eighteen and over. the city of bangor is a ten minute drive from campus. there you can go shopping, watch a movie, go to a roller skating arena, go bowling, get some good food, or do practically anything that you want to do on a boring friday night. lastly, the hockey games here on campus are full of energy and a must-do for anyone that attends the school. the best part is that tickets are free if you are a student...and if you are willing to wait outside for a little while before the game.

    Food and Dining

the university of maine has college food. slightly better than what you would get in high school, but overall not exceedingly appetizing. things to look out for are the healthy options that they have at each meal, buffalo chicken wraps on wednesdays, and special dinners that they tend to have once a month.

    Dorm Life

my dorm is usually quiet, which is nice for studying. however, the bathrooms can get a little disgusting, especially over the weekend when the janitorial staff does not work.

    Academic Rigor

the school has very good professors and the work load is moderate. if you are willing to put the time in to go to the library every night during the week, you should be able to have your weekends to relax and have fun with friends.

    In three sentences

the university of maine has a quiet campus, but there are endless opportunities to be social. the university of maine has more clubs than you can think of and the classes are taught by professors that know what they are talking about. the university of maine is a really good school, even for those graduates who do not think they want to stay in state.

    Campus Safety

I've never been afraid walking across campus by myself at night. I think the only things you need to be afraid of are angry hockey fans and moose on the loose.

    Greek Life

I have a lot of friends who are a part of Greek life, and they love it. If I weren't so busy already I'd consider joining a sorority. They do good things, and the people who are a part of them tend to be pretty awesome.

    Clubs and Activities

I cannot repeat it enough times: get involved on campus. Join clubs. Go to meetings. Apply for the honor societies. Do these things because if you are, you'll have more friends. It's very gratifying to walk around campus and have 1 out of ever 3 people you see say hello to you. Also, joining the Alternative Spring Break program is one of the best decisions I've made since coming to the school.

Great for these types of students

There's a place for everyone, whatever you were in high school. Except mean people. There's no place for them.

    Bang for the buck

Apply for scholarships, especially if you live out of state. It's a great school and it's not too expensive, but it adds up. You'll get your moneys worth.

    What to do for fun

Clubs, hockey games, movies every Wednesday night, exploring with friends, hiking nearby... There's also volunteering opportunities and plenty of outdoor activities to keep anyone busy. Do your homework, though.

    Food and Dining

You have to pick and choose what's healthy and what's not, but there's always something good to eat. I especially love Hilltops stir-fry.

    Dorm Life

I rate the dorm life so high because of my experience with it. You're close to your friends, you're close to your classes, and the RA's were excellent.

    Academic Rigor

While challenging and time consuming, I'm keeping in mind that other universities might be much harder (like an Ivy League school.)

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved right away, with as much as you can. Smile. Meet people. You'll enjoy college so much more if you're a part of something on campus. Also, study and do your homework. Grades are a big deal, and don't you forget it. Go to hockey games.

    In three sentences

I have found solace at the University of Maine. Whether it be in class, in the student union, or even up in my favorite tree, I always feel like I'm part of something. Like they say, you're in a great place.

    Campus Safety

UMPD is everywhere, and there are lit emergency phones all over campus.

    Greek Life

Lots of diversity, there are academic, social, and other kinds of fraternities and sororities on campus, and if you're looking for that kind of thing, you can easily find one for you.

    Clubs and Activities

    Great diversity. Something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

Those interested in engineering or nursing. The sociology program is fantastic. The psychology program is good, the people in it are for the most part okay. I honestly can't say anything for the rest of the programs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year, on the last Wednesday of the school year, the school celebrates Maine Day. All but one-a-week classes are cancelled and there is an 8am parade with members of the band fraternity and sorority (KKPsi, and TBS, respectively) running around playing pep band music in front of all the dorms. All the fraternities and sororities do service projects, and everyone else is invited. You can also sign up to play Oozeball, which is essentially volleyball in a pit of mud.

    Bang for the buck

The school looses its appeal the longer you are in it. You get tired of getting screwed over by the school's financial aid and bursar's offices.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of extracurricular activities on campus if you're interested in them. There are lots of sponsored activities for freshman and can be pretty fun if you're into that kind of thing. Also if you haven't already heard, UMaine has a reputation as a huge party school. Our school song is about drinking. Enough said.

    Food and Dining

Used to be fantastic, with multiple wonderful options to choose from. Nowadays you have to be an upperclassman in order to get dining funds in order to eat at the Union if you want to have something that won't make you sick. Don't ever eat on campus and expect not to have a disappointing trip tot he bathroom later.

    Dorm Life

Not bad, but it is significantly less appealing the longer you stay in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I've never had much difficulty with my classes, then again I haven't taken every class in the school. It's not Harvard, it's UMaine.

    Tips for prospective students

I've had a great experience at this school, but I've never been anywhere else. Consider your options, but remember that UMaine is definitely a great school. Don't forget their slogan, you're in a great place!

    In three sentences

Dining and other facilities for on-campus students have been heading downhill the last few years. It is hard to find advisors that care about you and your progress. Those professors and other professionals that do take an interest in their students are well worth the search, though.

    Campus Safety

I'd say that the campus safety is great because they are always around to help the students out. There is also a blue button that you can push if you feel like someone is following or stalking you.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is great here, there are so many fraternities and sororities to join. There are so many different types to join.

    Clubs and Activities

There is every club you can think of! Plus if the school does not offer the club, you can make your own club if you have 25 other students that are interested.

Great for these types of students

Great for all types of students! It is a very diverse school that welcomes every race and sexuality. Not for people that do not like the cold though!!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is really not anything unusual going on here.

    Bang for the buck

Just an overall great school to get an education and to have some fun! Every school is expensive to attend, so i'd say that the University of Maine is just average cost.

    What to do for fun

The town of Orono is mainly just the college and a few small neighborhoods. The weekend are really fun because there are a bunch of bars and fraternity houses that have parties. There are a couple good restaurants, but not many.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay. They do always have a good salad bar and sandwich station if you are grossed out by the cafeteria food. The food is really not that bad compared to other colleges that I have been to.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are decent, some better then others. Overall dorm life is really fun and a great way to meet new friends.

    Academic Rigor

Very tough classes but are very helpful with the profession that you want to have. You learn a lot in 4 years here.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have good study habits coming to school. If you don't have good study habits in high school, you will not do well in college.

    In three sentences

University of Maine is a great place for people for around the world to attend. The community is very diverse and very accepting. The professors are top notch scholars that work with anyone with needs help.

Great for these types of students

A good school for just about anybody. Not a ton of diversity, but expected since it is Maine. Anyone can find a place here, it is a very easy-going environment.

    Tips for prospective students

Manage your time. It's really easy to get lazy, so be sure to take the time to focus on classes before you decide to get involved with the party scene.

    Bang for the buck

For in state, it's pretty hard to beat. Unfortunately, the financial aid office doesn't give out much money but the school is not exactly the wealthiest school around. I'm not sure about out of state, but I do know that it is much cheaper than going out of state to the other new england state schools, like UVM and UNH.

    Am enjoying being here

Very laid back school, but at the same time pretty serious academics. Weekends can be a little uneventful if you don't party, but if you're creative you can find stuff to do.

    Am learning a lot

The school offers a wide range of majors, from english to engineering, and the classes can be hit or miss. Introductory classes are quite large, but there are some good lecturers here at UMaine.

Great for these types of students

Athletic people and people who like the cold weather and enjoy winter sports.

    What to do for fun

There's a good gym facility, the common rooms are fun if you live in a social dorm, and if you know someone with a car going to Bangor is really fun.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip I would give prospective students is one I would give any newcoming students to any college, and that would be to stay on track with all of the work. This ISN'T high school anymore, so don't expect the teachers to babysit you. Also, if you're going to drink, please drink responsibly.

    In three sentences

I think University of Maine is a very good school. I have had wonderful experiences in my classrooms with excellent staff, and I have no problems getting to know the students I live with. As a number I would give the school an 8 out of 10.

    Greek Life

I don't participate in Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for everything just about and if there isn't it's easy to make one and get it approved.

Great for these types of students

There is a wide variety of students on campus so there is always plenty to do for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

I feel UMaine is well priced for the academics you receive. But you are charged for using the Rec. and Fitness center based on the amounts of credits you take versus the amount of time you spend there.

    What to do for fun

There is always a ton of stuff to do for excitement and fun. Plenty of clubs and organizations to join and almost always a show or something going on every month.

    Food and Dining

I have eaten in the Marketplace at the Union and the food there is varied and tasty. I love the wraps. However, the breakfast over to Hilltop wasn't as good as I was hoping.

    Dorm Life

I don't personally live in the dorms, I live off-campus. However, I have heard that living in the dorm is laid-back and a fun atmosphere.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are easier than others but overall the classes are time demanding and academically strong.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for large lecture halls with hundreds of students at one time. Don't be scared to ask the professor for help when you don't understand a concept. Get involved in school activities such as clubs, sports, or organizations.

    In three sentences

Umaine is fast-paced and challenging in their academics. The staff is friendly, willing to take time to help you, and care about your needs. The atmosphere is exciting with plenty going on so that you are never bored.

Play soccer or frisbee on the field with friends, join a club, go to hockey or football games. There's always something to do.

    Food and Dining

There are a few different dining halls: York, Hilltop, Wells, and the Union. Hilltop sucks, York is passable, the Union is beautiful and the food is good but you have to pay in BearBucks, Wells is overall nice. There are convenience stores in each.

    Dorm Life

I have spent time in the Honors dorm with friends who attend. Everyone has a wonderful sense of humor and friends are very easy to make. My friends usually just leave their doors open and get random visitors all the time. (By choice, of course).

    Tips for prospective students

Visit campus at least once. Sit in on a class if you can. It gives the school a much more dynamic picture.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

State of the Art Recreation Center everything under one roof, swim, basketball, track, racketball courts, yoga, and machines really great facilities.

    Bang for the buck

Laid back student population, lots of things happening, events and socials well organized, greek society, lots of sports events for students to attend.

    What to do for fun

Clubs, trips, recreation center, movies, social events, Collins Center of the Arts for entertainment events and Concerts, festivals and Bangor within a few miles for dinning out, live music, and shopping.

    Food and Dining

    Greek Life

Go AOII! But if you don't, all Greek life is a blast. We have 7 Sororities (one of which is new this coming year!) and a bunch of fraternities.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many different choices. I would get involved with Alternative Spring Break. It was a blast!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The naked men at the hockey games are so fun. Maine hockey fans are the best fans ever.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on and there is a lot of free things to do. Rock climbing, exercise classes, plays, etc. There are also a ton of clubs and organizations to join and participate in. Sports are also free to watch with your Mainecard.

    Food and Dining

I personally love the food, but I didn't live on campus so I do not eat there every day. The dining halls (The Memorial Union in particular) shut down rather early and that is frustrating. Also, I hear Hill Top is sketchy, but when I have eaten there, I thought it was pretty good. It is right next to the freshman dorms as well.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms. The dorms I have been in are not very nice.

    Academic Rigor

This school has difficult programs and the teachers expect you to know your stuff, however, they are also very helpful. Get used to studying in Fogler library. It will be your home.

    Tips for prospective students

Take the initiative in your course planning. Advisers leave a lot up to the student, so when picking classes make sure that if you are going into a grad school, to know what they are looking for. Also, I would join Greek life. It opens up a lot of doors for volunteering and getting involved in campus.

    In three sentences

The University of Maine is a great school for natural sciences, nursing, teaching, and engineering. It is unique, beautiful and offers a lot of opportunities for students to get involved. The teachers and people are extremely helpful and a pleasure to work with.

Rock climbing, swimming, hanging out with friends, ResLife programs, field trips. Bangor is nearby with a large shopping mall and there are plenty of on campus events to keep you occupied.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is top notch. Throughout the parking lots of the campus as emergency poles that connect directly to campus security's dispatcher. Warnings and alerts are sent out via e-mail and text to students as soon as necessary. Clarification announcements are also sent out to help keep rumors and fear from rising.

    Clubs and Activities

Yoga, meditation, democrats, republicans, Green Party, GBLT Alliance...you name it, this college has a club or group for it!

Great for these types of students

Any student with a liberal mind set and that is goal oriented will find the University of Maine their perfect school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are two flower gardens that are just wonderful to spend time in. Once you're in the gardens, no one can see in and you can't see out. It's a great spot to hide away with a novel and read away the day. Out behind the Alfond Arena is a series of bike paths that lead to the nearby town of Old Town. The difficulty of these trails vary from a well paved path to more mountain biking like trails that are shared with deer and the occasional moose. For those living in Old Town, if they're lucky enough to live near the outlets to these trails, travel by bike can often beat the time made by car.

    Bang for the buck

All in all, what you get from the experience at the University of Maine is amazing, even if you live off campus. The cost leaves a lot to be desired, however. Many colleges that offer similar degree programs do so for a much better price with comparative education. If you really want to attend this school, be prepared to take out a good deal of loans.

    What to do for fun

Throughout the year there are numerous opportunities for students to kick back and relax. Fairs, festivals, and weekly bands are common on campus. A new gym and municipal center provide all the workout opportunities anyone could ask for. Anything that a person could wish to do for entertainment can be found on campus.

    Food and Dining

Dining plans on campus are a must, but have changed drastically over the years. Students are allowed to use their meal cards for a variety of packages at the Dining Commons and are also given separate funds for use as needed. The food at the Dining Commons is outstanding! A burger grill, taco stand, Chinese food, pizzeria, and salad bar all in one place is any college student's dream come true!

    Dorm Life

While dorm life may not be for everyone, those that wish to live on campus will find it a great experience. Rooms are spacious for two people to share and come with the basic furnishings as a bed, desk, and bureau. Each room is equipped with a T1 internet connection, digital cable, and separate thermostat.

    Academic Rigor

The rating for Academic Rigor is average. The University of Maine and the admissions staff in each of the individual colleges work hard to ensure that students can succeed on their own level. For some, this may mean taking the pre-laid programs that are offered or creating your own program at a slower or more rapid pace.

    Tips for prospective students

When looking at the University of Maine as an option, there are three things to keep in mind: 1. Both on-campus and off-campus living is readily accommodated. Campus housing is comfortable and comes with a great deal of amenities, such as a dining plan, washrooms in each of the dorms, and dining services near each cluster of dorms. Off-campus living is easy to do in a number of surrounding towns within a short drive to classes. 2. Class sizes and instruction vary. From large lecture halls containing upwards of 100 students to more intimate settings of class as small as 5 students, there is a comfort zone that any student will be able to fit into. Instruction modes include the classic lecture hall, more modern internet based courses, interactive televised courses, and even combinations. 3. Campus community. At the University of Maine, there are plenty of opportunities for students of any background to take part in a community where they feel at home. Multiple religious, ethnic, and hobby clubs exist for not only traditional students, but non-traditional students as well. The Commuter Lounge offers an area for commuter students to mingle and use commodities not provided for on-campus students. Each floor in the dorms has its own lounge for visiting with other students outside of the confines of private rooms. These three pieces weave together to braid the wonderful experience that can be found at the University of Maine. No matter what your background, individual preferences, nor educational needs, the University of Maine is a school that can be suited to your needs.

    In three sentences

The University of Maine in Orono is the flagship of the state's university system. A vast selection of degrees, a diverse history, and a focus on student community creates one of the leading liberal colleges in the nation. For traditional and non-traditional, on-campus and off-campus, returning and brand-new students, the University of Maine is a great educational experience.

The naked mile. Each year a group of students participate in a nude bike ride. It's on earth day so students paint themselves green and ride around campus naked for a brief 15 minutes.

    What to do for fun

There are always events posted in the Union, dorms, and on the website so there's always something to do and participate in

    Food and Dining

The food is good at first but by the end of your first semester you realize you need to start eating healthy and stop eating all the fried food they serve.

    Dorm Life

If you have a good roommate then you'll really enjoy living in the dorms.

Emergency telephone poles everywhere and you can get a keychain with a number on it so if anyone finds it, they give it to the police to find out where you are.

    Greek Life

REALLY big here, but that doesn't mean you have to join if you don't want to.

    Clubs and Activities

I can't even count the number of clubs here, everyone can find their niche.

Great for these types of students

Outdoors types, athletic, students who love learning while being around a lot of nature basically.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Pat's Pizza is the obvious traditional place to eat out.

    Bang for the buck

In state tuition is pretty cheap especially if you don't have to pay room and board (about $9,000) and the education is excellent. There are so many professors willing to help you out and advisors who give you one on one attention instead of just treating you like a number.

    What to do for fun

Orono has a surprising amount of entertainment on the weekends, most people go to clubs or bars but there are a few nice restaurants in the area too. I love all of the outdoor options personally, plenty of places to hike, kayak, mountain bike, rock climb, and white water raft.

    Food and Dining

I'm used to Umass's dining, which is amazing...salmon and lobster, strawberry pureed chicken breast, quinoa and avocado, homemade cupcakes, you name it. But Umaine beats Umass out of the water campus and people wise and I think that's more important in the end. The food is pretty decent here and I probably wouldn't complain so much if I hadn't gone to Umass first. Some dining halls are better than others and there isn't a huge selection dietary wise but you make the best of what you got I guess.

    Dorm Life

I can't rate this because I never lived in dorm at Umaine. I can say dorm life has its ups and downs probably whatever college you go to, there really isn't much privacy with roommates and there might be some arguments and probably a lot of drama. I've seen one dorm room at Umaine, it was clean and efficient looking but on the smaller side. I heard there are a couple dorms to stay away from and a few others that have the best location or dorm styles

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the major you have. I'm in the Biology major with a Premed concentration and even without the Premed, the Biology major is very hard and the classwork is time consuming. However, a lot of the students in other majors tend to have more free time and there are always easier teachers, you just have to find them!

UMaine's campus is beautiful and medium sized. The atmosphere is very welcoming and these are the friendliest people I've ever met! Laid back, easy going, and intellectual are the words I'd describe the students and teachers I've met so far.

    What to do for fun

You can find a lot to do through the UMaine website. If you don't want to join clubs or do sports there are also many job opportunities.

    Food and Dining

Hill top was never my favorite. The Union and Well Dining are the best in my opinion. Do your research on your dining dollar options.

    Dorm Life

I had a great time for two years in the dorms. They aren't for everybody and it also all depends on your room mate. Be sure to make friends with those on your floor.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major the classes can be very intense. I found that I always had to work very hard in most of my classes and never felt that I had busy work to do.

    Tips for prospective students

You should make use of the Rec Center. It is a great place and I wish I would have used it more. Explore the library. There are many parts I didn't discover until my last year. Join a club or two!

    In three sentences

UMaine has a club for everyone. If there isn't a club for you you can create you're own and you will easily find people to join. I noticed all four years that everyone was very polite.

    Bang for the buck

You get A LOT of free things if you go to the right events.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on on campus, whether put on by the dorms, or the First Year Experience group. There are activities going on every night of the week in dorms and always a big event every weekend whether it is a sporting event or a concert by a famous musician. There is also Bangor, ME about 15 minutes away from the college, which has movie theaters, a mall, and many places to eat out for cheap!

    Food and Dining

The food is good quality, but I give the three star rating because they constantly have the same menu every week. You will generally know what is for dinner each day of the week before looking at the online menu. They do have a good variety of food for different people though and the holiday meals are the best.

    Dorm Life

Personally, I really like the dorms because there are plenty of places to choose from that offer different advantages, whether they are closer to classes or to the gym/sports fields. I love being able to walk everywhere and not have to have a car to get places. There are also many activities that the dorm halls put on. You don't have to participate but you get a lot out of it if you do.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are very challenging and others are a bit easier like high school, but either way the students leave at the end of the semester with a lot more knowledge than when they first sat down on the first day of class.

    Tips for prospective students

Get active and join a club or something that you are interested in, it's not hard to make time for things that you love to do. Always tour the college before you go because it is very large and there are tons of people that attend. Go to summer orientation, if you don't you miss a lot of things that are hard to make up for later on. When you move in keep your door open (while you are there of course) the first week to meet new people and create a bond with people on your floor.

    In three sentences

The university really does care about your experience here. They offer so much for people to participate in and make it possible to meet new people everyday. It's really a lot of fun for first year students and upperclassmen alike.

    Bang for the buck

Great price. Look out for this kid named Seamus, though. He is like broke. Whenever you smoke with him he's always the one who never contributes any and mooching off of you. I feel bad for his girlfriend. No dates. They just stay in that dorm room all the time.

    What to do for fun

Hiking, swimming, getting mauled by bears has become quite possible in recent years. Those frat parties, though...

    Food and Dining

    S'okay.

    Dorm Life

Try to get a chem-free dorm. Some of those kids are hard into doing weird chemicals... I'd try for a quiet dorm, where the residents are mostly mute and there is no talking. Plenty of down time, which is quite refreshing after a crazy night out at a frat party. Sometimes it's nice to think about the finer points of Lao Tzu in peace while stoned out of your mind. They leave you alone there, too.

    Academic Rigor

Like I said, those campus police are on us all the time about maintaining academic excellence. Like, I didn't get to skip a class for a whole two weeks, man. It is so nice to have an intellectual discussion about the finer points of Bill Clinton's astronomical studies and research with a person who actually regards me as an educated equal. Totally not like high school. Morse was rough.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class. Take notes. It is unbelievable how much that helps. Let the campus police do whatever they may. They are a huge hassle to deal with because they spend so much time trying to maintain the peace on campus that they are really in your face. Like if they search your bag or escort you to class they're only doing it just to make sure you don't skip and are taking notes in classes. They are huge on staying involved in your studies. If only they knew of all the stuff we're on all the time....

    In three sentences

The professors know what they are talking about... usually. It is so remarkable and refreshing to finally run into an institution where the people filling your little head actually have knowledge in their own... most of the time. There are some exceptions... like Bob.

UMO police aren't the greatest, but I will admit they have a tough job. They do the best they can by patrolling frequently and doing what they can, but I consider the real heros on campus to be the school's volunteer ambulance corp. They train and put students to work as capable EMTs that are a big help on campus when things go bad.

Depending on the day the food can be decent but sometimes it is just down right gross and I don't know what to choose.

    Dorm Life

Love the dorm life because everyone is so nice. It does get a little loud but nothing that's unmanageable.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professor, classes can be hard or easy. Most of the required general education classes can be a little more difficult because it is not stuff you enjoy.

    Tips for prospective students

If you do not like the cold, this is not the place for you. U Maine has great bands that anyone can join for credit or no credit. Large campus compared to some but a very reasonable walk around.

    In three sentences

The University of Maine is a very welcoming place. The students and professors all opened up to the incoming freshman and I felt very at home as soon as I started school. I am very glad that I chose to go to U Maine to pursue my college education.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is so fun! Entertaining to say the least. The RA's are always looking for ways to get the floor together to do something fun, and when they aren't, there are always people in the lounges, playing games, studying, or just hanging out.

    Academic Rigor

Personally, I love the challenge that the professors here demand of their students. They have a passion for what they teach, and that makes you really want to learn and understand that passion.

It is a place where you are encouraged to work hard and do your best, you will get all the support you need from your peers, and the grounds are just beautiful.

If you can imagine it, it is here. Indoor swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, tennis courts, basketball, weight-rooms, indoor tracks.

Food and dining areas are top of the line, and there are many dining places around campus. You can find literally anything you need in any one of these places.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life can be great, and it can be distracting. Find a roommate who you are compatible with, and learn each others schedules. make time to study before you go out and party.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are competitive and fill up quickly, depending on your major. Many classes have lab sessions that require extra hours of studying and homework that you can not pass the original class without passing the lab.

    Tips for prospective students

-Stay focused on studying -Make it to as many or all of your classes, missing just a few classes could possibly get you too far behind -Help others who do not understand what you may, and in return you will receive the same -Always ask for help if you need it

    Bang for the buck

I'm not really sure what is being asked here.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of fun things to do on campus. For example every Wednesday night there is kickin' flicks where the school plays a new movie that may not even be out in theaters yet. That and there is always something going on on campus for students and even just the public sometimes.

    Food and Dining

Umaine serves delicious food that may be slightly over priced, but it's worth it to have dining halls all you can eat.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is so much better than I thought it would be. There is a great community within each dorm building and students are constantly helping each other with classes or homework. There are drawbacks such as possibly having loud neighbors, but that's what resident assistance (RA) are for. If you have any issues you can talk to your RA and find a solution.

    Academic Rigor

Umaine provides a quality education to all of its students who apply themselves. College isn't about teachers holding your hand, it's about standing on your own two feet and making something of yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit a school before you decide to attend. Once you choose a school you're going to be living there for several months out of the year, it really does make a difference what the campus life is like.

    What to do for fun

Everything and Anything! Put yourself out there and really get the whole experience. Rent skis from Maine Bound, go rock climbing, go to one of the local bars and enjoy some local music only 18+ Some nights! Get involved!

    Food and Dining

The food is actually not bad for a college. They do put very odd spices on some stuff, but you can find food without it. Stir-fry and pasta bar are must haves, but only if you're willing to wait in line for them.

    Dorm Life

To me dorm life is just inconvenient and it sucks not really having your own space ever. I feel as though dorm life is pretty much something everyone has to experience once in their life though. Enjoy it and embrace it for at least a year. Some people even love it.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are very difficult whether it is because of the professor or the material itself. There are tutors available to you, don't be scared to as your professor questions or go to their office hours. Or get help from other classmates do not fall behind!

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get overwhelmed! The school may seem large as well as the campus, but you won't have classes in every building all at once. Find where your classes are and you will learn quickly from there it is not as big as it seems.

    In three sentences

University of Maine is a large school, but you would never know it. You feel a great sense of community and involvement. As they say though you get out what you put into it.

Join clubs, walk/bike/snowshoe/xcountry ski the trails, play some frisbee, grab a bite to eat, dance, talk to friends, go on a hike, go camping, anything and everything!

    Food and Dining

I love the diverse choices you get from the dining halls here. The most important for me is that the fruit and veggies are fresh, making it easy to eat healthy. And the stir-fry is the best I've ever had.

    Dorm Life

I've already made several of what I know will be lifelong friends, and I'm only a semester in. The dorms are clean and spacious, and the RA's are helpful and friendly. I've got no complaints about dorm living here.

    Academic Rigor

I feel like I've already learned in one semester twice as much as I learned in high school altogether. The classes, even the general education classes, are taught by excellent professors who inspire an excitement in the students about the subject.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Classic advice, sure, but the biggest thing I've learned being at college is that time is unbelievably valuable. Spend your time out making friends and memories, not on Facebook in your dorm.

    In three sentences

The University of Maine is incredible. It offers a well rounded education experience balancing academics and extracurriculars and provides a community that has room for anyone and everyone. As a student at UMaine I'm blown away by all the things I've already had my mind opened to.

Financial aid is pretty good for in-state students, however extra scholarships will be necessary for many (including myself). As for payoff, being a full time student at the moment, I couldn't really speak for myself.

This is what you make of it.

The blue lights are a tad far apart, but campus safety is always super friendly whenever you see them. You can get escorts after dark if you don't like walking alone

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a stein collection in the library and the school song is called The Stein Song.

    What to do for fun

Nature walks, free movie Wednesdays in the Colin's Center. Snowmen during the winter. The Bangor mall is about 15 minutes away

    Food and Dining

There's a fair selection, but you get tired of eating anything after 9 months of it.

    Dorm Life

The RAs really care about their residents in most cases, and they try to put on programs that will keep them busy. The bathrooms could really use some work, though. Also, you can't cook your own food because of appliance restrictions. Meal plans are required for dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

There's a fair amount of work involved, but it's nothing too strenuous. Unfortunately, the TAs run the labs and recitation periods, so you're not getting as much contact with professors as you could be.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring warm clothes and rain boots. It's mud season for most of the year. Be open to finding things to do with friends.

    In three sentences

The campus is in a really rural setting, but it has great trails out behind it. The people are fairly nice in general but the party scene overshadows much of the other social opportunities. Be prepared to find your own entertainment on most evenings.

There are many safety precautions taken and campus police are very accessible.

    Greek Life

Greek life is very popular, but if you are not involved, it won't affect you much.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a large number of clubs and activities available. Whatever you like to do, there is a club or organization for it.

Great for these types of students

    Social, friendly, hard-working, and focused.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

This university has a very strange tradition of Humans vs. Zombies, a game played over the course of a week or so each semester. Participants divide into teams of either humans or zombies, and chase each other all over campus with objects. It is very amusing to watch. Also, Chickenfest is another annual tradition that is very well known. It is a large, off-campus party that takes place in different locations every year and attracts hundreds of students.

    Bang for the buck

Overall, this school has been a great experience for me and I highly recommend prospective students to check it out.

    What to do for fun

There are many opportunities to engage in fun activities. Whatever you like to do, there is a club or organization for it. Greek life is very popular and students get very involved. However, if you are not involved with Greek life, it will not affect you much. There are a lot of places to go in surrounding areas, especially Bangor. If partying is your scene, there is always a party to be found and the campus comes alive on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

    Food and Dining

The food is not bad, though it does get old after awhile. There are three dining halls, with Hilltop being the main freshmen dining hall. Wells is nearby, which is around the same quality. York is a slightly far walk and is located near the upperclassman dorms, but has better food. Overall, I miss the dorm food now that I am living on my own off-campus.

    Dorm Life

This certainly depends on the students preferences, but I enjoyed dorm life. Many of the friends you will have throughout college you meet during the first two weeks of school, and many will be in your dorm. Some dorms are nicer than others, and some are known to be more rowdy, dirty, and loud. There are options for a quiet dorm or chem-free dorm, if you would like to avoid these environments.

    Academic Rigor

My major is not rigorous, at least not yet. Some majors, such as Education and Human Development, are very easy. Others, such as Biology and Engineering, are substantially more difficult. Make sure you attend all lectures and devote a decent amount of time for schoolwork, and you will do fine regardless of your major.

    Tips for prospective students

Take different classes your freshman and sophomore year, so you can explore different career paths. My major changed three times over the first three years before I finally figured out what I wanted to do.

    In three sentences

The University of Maine has been a great experience for me, though it is definitely what you make of it. There is, in my opinion, the perfect amount of students and there are many opportunities to get involved on campus and meet new people. There is a great social and academic atmosphere!
