    Am learning a lot

I am a freshman attending American River College and I have learned a lot academically. The professors I had last semester were very knowledgeable about their subject they were teaching, but they also expect a lot out of their students. I had about five to six hours of homework a week and three to seven hours of studying each week. The professors are enjoyable and try to stay on their good side.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes I am enjoying go to American River. The students are nice, and i would recommend joining a club or a sports team. I am on the women's soccer team, and my team mates have helped me understand the skills necessary for college. They also helped tutor me with some of my classes.

    Bang for the buck

Last semester i spent a thousand dollars on my books, tuition, gas, food, and other miscellaneous objects. I am about to enter my second semester and already I am paying two hundred dollars on books. I recommend getting books online from Amazon or Barnes and Nobles. This will save you so much in the long run and try not to spend your money frivolously.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend knowing other students and understanding what the professor expects. When you make friends, you can organize study sessions because it is very difficult to go through college alone. If you meet someone that has taken the class already, you can receive their notes and look at their old exams to see how to the professor makes his or her tests. Understanding what the professor wants from you is a given, because this will help succeed in their class. I also recommend getting to know your professor because they will tell you more information than they do in class and they will try to do everything to see you do well in their class. Lastly, go to the professor's office hours because it is one-on-one tutoring.

Great for these types of students

American River College is for students who want a step into being an adult. The work is tedious but in the long run it will pay off and you will enjoy your decision. Even though this is a community college, you save money for your General Education (GED) and you make life long friends. Research schools that interest you, because you create your own destiny.

American River College has a mediocre appearance with an interesting selection of classes and professors. It is most definitely not a school to judge by its cover. There are also plenty of opportunities to be had if you look for them.

    Tips for prospective students

Pay attention to bulletin boards for interesting opportunities such as clubs, lectures and events. There are also sometimes advertisements for lodging, jobs, cheap used books, tutoring, and things going on in the community.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor depends on the professor. Overall, the classes aren't very rigorous as long as you apply yourself. That being said, there are some professors that do have a more rigorous course-load.

    Dorm Life

Being a community college, there is none.

    Food and Dining

While there is a range of food choices there is currently no cafeteria building, the food services being moved to portable buildings, and there isn't much quality.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous clubs and community events.

    Bang for the buck

You can easily knock out the first two years of your college work hear for a good deal cheaper than starting at a four year university.

Great for these types of students

People who want to begin school cheaper, want to begin a college career while maintaining a full time job, and want to obtain an associate's degree.

    Clubs and Activities

Various clubs including fitness, English, film, mathematics, chemistry, and Amtgard clubs. There is also a large populous of Magic: the Gathering players who often play at school.

    Campus Safety

The campus isn't too dangerous as long as you keep an eye on your stuff. Also, the night time tends to be a bit more dangerous and you have to be careful, but there is a shuttle at night to take you to your car as to avoid most of that.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of everything offered, you might just qualify for financial aid, and definately do not miss class, their fun and entertaining and very informative.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers go off what they know not just statistics off the book, which is highly appreciated.

    Dorm Life

    There is no doorm.

    Food and Dining

Since they are renovating the cafeteria they do not have one, however they have done a great substitution, turning the portables into the temporary location, and the food is great too.

    What to do for fun

There is a Library, a Mormon institute, an LRC, MMLC, and an assortment of places to hang out, learn or whatever one sees fit as fun.

    Bang for the buck

Financial aid pays for everything even classes with a little to pay for books, unless your a full-time student then summer school isnt. However, the classes are covered but you dont get any money.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

No there isnt any, except every thursday is club day.

Great for these types of students

Take advantage of every opportuity, I cannot say that enough.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of sports, arts.biology, herticulture clubs, you can get to know them more during the spring, during club day.

    Greek Life

    there isnt any.

    Campus Safety

enforced. which you can feel safe at school with the low crime rate.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently studying as a music major at American River College. The teachers are excellent and push you to become a better musician. For a community college, we have teachers that are willing to help their students through the internet, office hours and after class. There is a lot of opportunities to learn through the learning resource center filled with tutors and through the newly built library.
I enjoy being here but can't wait to transfer to a university. I feel that by being here I can be competitive amongst other students at the university level.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy the company of the teachers who push me to be a better student. Numerous tools like online videos help enhance my experience in class. Audio tracks in the music department also help students have more practice for the quizzes! I didn't give it 5-stars because sometimes the the teachers can be extremely passionate and take things a bit too far.

    Bang for the buck

Hek yes! A great education for less! In the music department we keep up competition with universities all around the nation. We even created a college magazine that is nationally known!

    check it out!

Many of the sports programs are in top shape! The American River College Volleyball team has risen from being the most defeated team in their league to being one of the top community college sports teams in the state of California!!

    Tips for prospective students

So much experiences that have made me a better student! Make sure not to get distracted with all the activity. Participate as much as you can and it will benefit you.

It is hard to get a counselor appointment and it is easy to get side tracked, so make sure to have a plan and see a counselor regularly. Keep a goal in mind and the teachers here will be able to help you!

    Did learn a lot

I have officially finished my time at American River College as of Summer 2011. During my last two years at ARC, I have learned more than I learned my four years in high school and the on year I attended a University. I can honestly say, with no regrets, that I loved this school. I made so many friendships and relationships with my fellow classmates and teachers. There are so many ways students can get help on campus. There are group and individual tutor sessions, classes to help students improve their reading and writing, workshops, research help, etc! There's so much. Any help that any student is looking for for ANY class , I am sure ARC has it or can make it specifically for you!

    Did enjoy being here

I loved it. I got help from my counselor every semester making sure I was taking the right classes and on track. I was a competing athlete and my counselor made sure that I was taking enough units to stay eligible, but not too much to where I was overwhelmed. When I first started at ARC, I slacked off and dropped a lot of my classes and even failed one. I owe it to my counselor that I got back on track and worked my butt off to still receive my AA in two years (:

    Bang for the buck

Definitely a money saver! And you're still getting a college education. Some students spend four or more years at a university taking out $10,000+ worth of loans a school year. Most students enter college not knowing where their career path is headed and waste their freshman year lost in that search. Coming to ARC made me know where I wanted to go with my education, and saved me thousands of dollars in loans! There is something called a BOG fee waiver for California Community College students (something university students do not receive). The BOG pays for your classes and depending on a student's financial situation, it may also pay for your books (not including financial aid you will receive). To be a full-time student at ARC, a student must be enrolled in 12 units. The cost of attendance here is 36$/unit. After doing the math, the BOG sounds really good! BUT one must consider that even if a student does not receive the BOG, the cost is WAY cheaper than a university. Students that do not receive the BOG, most likely did not apply.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for the BOG! All of the information is on ARC's website at www.arc.losrios.edu . Click on Quick links and scroll down to Financial Aid and there is a lot of help there. Also, schedule meetings with a counselor to make sure you are taking classes that transfer to a 4-year so you are not wasting time. Teachers usually put books that are required for their class up AT LEAST two weeks before the semester starts. Go to the student bookstore EARLY to rent a book for at least half of the actual price of the book. There are also many websites such as uloop, amazon, chegg, etc. I also highly suggest that everyone goes to their teacher's office hours. They are there every week for the whole semester and get visits from a few of their students the entire semester. It makes a difference when a teacher knows you! And do not be afraid to ask questions, if you are a shy student in class, write your question down so you do not forget and go to your teacher's office hours and ask it. That way everyone wins and they see you are making an effort!

Great for these types of students

All types! Very diverse campus! There are also programs for deaf students and students that need personal attention or extra help. ARC does not discriminate. They give everyone a chance at their education - I believe that is why the campus is so diverse because they do not turn people down.

    Am learning a lot

I am a Theater Major, and also want to continue my studies on Creative Writing, and there is no better Community College in the Sacramento area for these trades. Our Magazine is a Nationally Acclamed, and has competed aginst the magazines of schools such as a little place called Stanford, and won might I add. I have never seen a theater department more passionate and more encouraging than the one at American River College. The theater teachers will push you to the limit, and bring out something special in you that you never knew you had. I cannot describe how much I have grown as a performer. I came in a freshmen with very little acting experience, and now, a year later, have theater companies emailing me to audition for their plays. I give all the glory to American River College. Because of the innovative instruction, and the faith they have in every student, I know I will not be the only one making my dreams come true.

    Am enjoying being here

When I first began College, I must say that I was what one would call, well, embarrassed. With a 4.0 G.P.A senior year of high school, I was sure that I would go straight to a University. Due to personal catastrophies going on in my life, visiting campus' was the last thing on my mind. So, with a fear tears which eventually turned into heartless shrugs, I finally exepted the fact that I was going to have to go to a Community College, American River College known the less. I must say now, with a year later, my Generel Ed halfway complete, and some cash still in my pocket, this was the best decisipn that I was thrust into. There are so many reasons why I enjoy being at this College, and I can honsetly say that I couldn't see myself growing more as a person anywhere else. First of all, I love the people. There aren't cliques or popularity contest here. You have people of all types of races, ages, and cultures. It's like one of those cartoons from the 90s with squggly art. No one here is the same!

    Bang for the buck

It costs 36 dollars per unit, which compared to any Univeristy, is a bargain. Plus, the school has numerous programs that you can jon in order to get a discount on classes. I get a discount due to my father being a veteran.

    Tips for prospective students

For one, prospective students need to know the class numbers on the doors. They can be extremely confusing at times, so to go to the school ahead of time and look for your class numbers is very highly recommended. As a mater of fact, I would suggest touring the entire campus before your first day of class. That way you won't be confused about where to go, since the hallways can be confusing at first. I would also recommend you sign up for classes at least 3 months ahead of time, and that's the very least. Classes fill up quickly. If there is a class that you absolutely need, and you are number 20 on the wait list, don't be too discouraged. Within a matter of months, a lot of students drop out, and this could possibly give you a spot. So sign up early.

Great for these types of students

If you are a student who enjoys variety, in which I mean people, clubs, and sports, this is the school for you. I would definately say that American River College is for the artist. If you love anything that involves creativity, this is the place for you.

I love ARC. It is a large school with a small community feel to it. They have great teachers who are willing to bend over backwards to help you succeed! Most classes are transferable if that is the route you plan to take and the classes are preparing you to transfer to a higher education. Love this school!

American River College is very diverse with many individuals both young and old striving to complete the same goal: to achieve a college education for a better future. The campus is quite large being a community college and there are a huge range of classes to pick for your schedule. The atmosphere does not seem to imitating and meeting new faces and learning is quite enjoyable.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip for prospective students is this is the place to go if you are lingering back and forth between multiple majors. Community college is also a smart choice to pick because it can save you a ton of money for similar education and smaller classes sizes, so it is easier to grasp the material in class.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at ARC depends on the students. If you want to succeed, you must strive for the grade you want because nothing comes easy and must be earned through hard work. There are also many professors here that want you to succeed and will push you to get that grade you want!

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, being a community college, ARC does not offer dorms. However, if you have a job and are financially stable, you can move out into nearby apartments around Sacramento or otherwise stay at home and save up money until that day you move out.

    Food and Dining

There are many places to eat around campus, such as fast food places name McDonald, Burger King, Jack in the Box and even Panda Express. Within the campus there is also a few places to eat when your stomach is growling. In campus you can get some delicious pizza, handmade burritos and even healthy snacks!

    What to do for fun

Well, college is more stressful than fun but to have some fun, you can walk around and engage in the sports meet they have on campus. There are also varies plays and artwork showed on campus to observe created by the more artistic students. You can also walk around the culinary area to observe some tips on how to cook.

    Bang for the buck

For the amount you pay to attend ARC it is a smart choice compared to the high expenses of the 4 year Universities. However, if your like me and want to attend a 4-year it is a smarter choice to complete the general education at a community college first and then complete the classes for my major at the 4-year to save money.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On campus, everywhere is pretty much the same. My favorite spot is just to sit on the side near the parking lot because even though there are many cars passing by, it is quite peaceful.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who want to go to college and can't afford to, students who are willing to strive for their future goals and students who want to stay close to home for just a couple more years because venturing off to something bigger!

    Clubs and Activities

There are a huge variety of clubs and activities that ARC has offer. Chances are if you have a hobby, someone or a group at ARC might share the same interest.

    Greek Life

The life on campus is quite easy and it is not hard to find where you are looking to go, such as classrooms for classes.

    Campus Safety

To me, the campus does not seem dangerous. It feels quite safe, however if you have a late night class, I would advise you to carry around pepper spray just in case since you never know what can pop out of the bushes.

The degree for Architecture is very misleading. It is much more focused on Engineering prospects then on Architecture drawings.

    Tips for prospective students

I think that if you had Architects teaching the Architect courses and not Engineers that it might be much more related to the actual degree.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are very easy to pass.

    Food and Dining

Having the dining area created during the semester is a large down side to student life. I would have recommended starting the project during the summer.

    What to do for fun

I haven't found many things to do around campus that are fun.

    Bang for the buck

It is becoming less so as the tuition goes up.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many Christianity groups that set booths up around school and they don't understand the diversity of the religions of the school.

Great for these types of students

I think the observation of a religion is a good thing. I just wish they were more open to other religions.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs for different Majors and they are very open to all people.

    Greek Life

The first time I heard that there was a Greek life at school was in my 4th year and it really isn't active in our school.

    Campus Safety

I like the updates via text message when there is a problem on campus so that I can decide the danger level to myself if I'm going to be on campus that day.

ARC is a great college with awesome professors. It's got successful sports teams, a fair selection of classes, and a lovely library. This is my first semester and I love it so far.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get an idea of what you want to study, if you haven't already. Some of the other community colleges in Sacramento offer some cool programs that aren't available at ARC.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I've attended aren't too hard, but they are a good challenge. You definitely need to pay attention in class and read your textbooks.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms!

    Food and Dining

There are just a few dining choices: Subway, Java City, an oft-overpriced cafeteria, and a truck that I must admit has tasty breakfast options.

    What to do for fun

Hang out in the library and watch YouTube with classmates, run around the track, or explore Arcade Creek next door.

    Bang for the buck

Although the campus tends to be under construction most of the time, the school has some of the most amazing teachers and resources available to its students. Coming from a community with its majority being Caucasians, I enjoyed the huge diversity of different ethnicity's attending the campus. At this school, they really strive for their students to achieve their goals.

    Tips for prospective students

Students that plan on attending this school will have the ability to experience college life without any stresses or pressures from the big college. They offer many classes at all different times to help give options to their students. The teachers really love their jobs and it shows in they enthusiasm for wanting you to succeed.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take, some may be more difficult that others but one thing remains the same, all of the teachers love what they do. You will have to work hard to prove yourself but at no time will you feel like you have no support. There are many different devices to help you pass each project as well as the class itself.

    Dorm Life

I've never experienced this so I have no comment.

    Food and Dining

The food at this school can definitely be a hit and miss. While some food areas are good, some have low quality and higher prices. At the moment, the school is under construction in some areas, one of them being the cafeteria. Unfortunately due to that, our options have been cut and the wait lines have increased. Before the construction, the food was pretty enjoyable.

    What to do for fun

The school provides many things for enjoyment on campus such as seeing plays, hearing optional attendance lectures and the annual events in the courtyard. They really strive to make their students feel included. And since the school is in between Sacramento and the Roseville area, there are plenty of other things to do when not in school such as shop, go to the movies, and see concerts.

    Bang for the buck

Its a community college so of course we are getting a pretty good bang for our buck but book prices always have a tendency to be overpriced with awful buybacks.

    Campus Safety

We have a shuttle van that will take students to their cars at night which has been proven to be very helpful. There are also emergency phones located through out the campus. Its usually pretty safe and I don't feel uncomfortable walking to my car alone.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are eager to help you accomplish any college goals you have, if thats to transfer or get into a specific program. With the extra programs such as WAC and library assistance with writing essays and researching you have no excuse to pass all your classes. The counselors here are very informative and give you every advantage to succeed in your future goals. Planning things out with them can help get through the process easier and keeping track of what classes need to be taken and how many units to either transfer or graduate with an Associates is definitely possible.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being here, not because its a smaller campus with more people I've grown up with, but because I've got a 3.0 GPA the entire first year and it wasn't even that hard to accomplish. Going to this college is a cheaper alternative to complete your general ed and if you go to your classes and stay focused and motivated you can transfer and get your Bachelors degree in less time.

    Bang for the buck

Buying books offline is the best way to save money since most hard covers are well into the 100's but when paying for classes financial avenues such as the BOG waiver fee can minimize paying 36 dollars a unit to only 5 dollars per semester. Along with the education i couldn't imagine myself going to any other college, because its just that convenient on my bank!

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending any college take it seriously, just because this is a 2 year community college dosent mean you can treat this like high school. Showing up to class and doing your home work is expected, and if you dont then your out of luck. Teachers will only try so hard but its all your responsiblity to get your own stuff done. I suggest buying an agenda and takeing notes, because college expects alot mo0re from you then you knew you could accomplish.

COMPLETE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!! I already got the BOG Fee Waiver so I don't have to pay for my classes at all. I had to pay a small fee and will have to buy my books and other supplies.

    Tips for prospective students

DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!! Make sure you know if this campus is right for you and your major!!!

Great for these types of students
