    Am learning a lot

Wow, one semester down and I feel like it's already swept by. If you choose to go into Sciences here at SUNY Binghamton you will definitely get your money's worth, and learn a lot more than you ever anticipated. Binghamton is renowned as a 1st degree research college in Math and Science, and to pass those types of classes, even as a Freshman you really have to buckle down and study, study, study but afterwards you will know your stuff. Socially there are so many different organizations you can attend, and learn about different cultures, religions, and personalities. It's almost as if the whole world is sitting in your backyard!

    Am enjoying being here

As an Out-of-State student I considered a lot of colleges before going to Binghamton, including Texas State San Marcos, as well as the famous UT Long Horns in Austin. As I am originally from the Southern regions of the United States it was a real culture shock for me but I enjoyed every second of it. All my professors were fantastic, and quite engaging. People say that college is different from High School because the Professors don't care whether you pass or fail, but at Binghamton I felt that they really did care.

    Bang for the buck

Since Binghamton is in New York, you of course have to deal with taxes, however SUNY Binghamton, compared to other schools has a lot of props for the price. You can sign up for a good meal plan (that will definitely save you some money). There is a Student bus system which will help you cut corners on gas and paying for a parking permit. You can even get a job on campus at the Library or as a Tour guide. The school is actually known in magazines such as USA today as a good buy as far as tuition goes. There are extraciricilar leadership classes offered every now and again that look good on your resume.

One of the only downsides is the Health Service system does not stay open on weekends, but it offers walk in hours from 8 am - 11 am without and appointment.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring boots (it starts to snow real bad around early December),
Take advantage of all the organizations that SUNY offers as clubs,
Scope out the town area (there is a discount student book store close by, a Wal-Mart, Movie theatre, Target, Mall, Bed Bath and Body Works, Dollar Store, Hallmark that you can get to by bus, in less than 10 minutes.)
Know the student Bus System (There are both city buses and school buses that drop you off and pick you up at the student Union, and they go to about everywhere, until the wee hours in the morning.)

Great for these types of students

Students looking for a smaller campus,
Students looking for a smaller classes,
Students looking to go to a public school,
Students looking for a Liberal Arts school setting.
    Students who love basketball.
Students who want to go into Business, Nursing, Teaching or Human Development, can change from Harper to schools which are located on campus and specialize in those divisions.

    Am learning a lot

The professors here are great! If you need help they are there for you. Often times students don't go to them so they really do want you to come to them or else they won't have anything to do during office hours.

    Am enjoying being here

I adore dorming on campus because you basically live with your classmates/friends. You can eat together, hangout with each other and I must say you will never be bored. Freshmen aren't allowed cars on campus but there are free shuttle buses that take you places like walmart or oakdale mall. Also my favorite part of campus is the nature preserve, it is just a great place to sit and relax and enjoy nature.

    Bang for the buck

This is a premier state university, I think the tuition price isn't good but isn't bad either but of course it'd be great if college was free... =]

    Tips for prospective students

As many students before me have said time management is key. As a engineering student, I am always busy with school work or clubs. It really is important to balance studying and leisure time but once you get the hang of it, SUNY Binghamton is great!

    Am learning a lot

Even though I am only taking 3 classes, the workload is still tremendous, but manageable if you sufficiently set time aside to do it! My professors are very intelligent and teach well; however, one of my TAs is a bit hard to understand and there are many of them so watch out.

    Am enjoying being here

There will never be a lack of activities available on campus. For one, if you enjoy getting involved in a multitude of extracurriculars, you will find yourself having to choose between a few here and there since you are only person. The weekends are ridiculous...the party scene downtown is always hoppin and if your not into that there are usually lots of student run groups that host a variety of events.

    Bang for the buck

DEFINITELY worth what you are paying for. Sometimes I find myself not being satisfied with the quality of certain small things, such as, a lack of soccer balls for the club team but when I think about how much I am paying compared to others it is a big difference.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring rain boots and warm clothing! The weather is as bad as everyone makes it seem, but one thing I can say about it is that it is VERY bipolar. The temperature range for one day in early fall usually ranges from 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit so layer it up to make it easier to put on and strip off when necessary.

Great for these types of students

-Those interested in the math and science fields
-those who cannot afford to pay for other schools
-those who want diversity and looking for cultural exchanges
-those who anticipate in joining a frat or sorority if you want they do exist too and throw a lot of the parties
    -if you like winter

    Am learning a lot

Every class i've taken has been stimulating. Besides the fact that the majority of the professors here are great, the students are motivated and bring up insightful and intelligent discussions in class. Its fantastic.

    Am enjoying being here

The people here are great. Everyone is really friendly and even if they're not, the campus is big enough to stay away from those who you wish to stay away from. The dorming communities are great (especially CIW).

    Bang for the buck

Binghamton is worth the money and then some. I honestly could not imagine having a better college experience anywhere else, and thats the most important thing. Academically it's just as good as any private school of greater cost and socially it surpasses them.

    Tips for prospective students

    Be prepared for the cold.
If you're premed, be prepared to not sleep freshman year.
If you're not premed, be prepared to not see your friends that are.
Go to the frat parties. Its worth it.
Make as many friends as possible as soon as possible.
    Smile.

Great for these types of students

Any type of person can be happy here; from jock to hipster.
Even though the campus is really large, it definitely has a small school feel. Do not let the size be a factor that steers you from binghamton.

    Am learning a lot

The workload at Binghamton can get a bit intense sometimes, with all nighters at the library, but there is a great, recently remodeled cafe for those all nighters. It all depends on the class you take that influences the work load. Some can be a lot easier than others.

    Am enjoying being here

I love everything about the school more and more each day that I am there. I got involved in everything, but not the things I thought I would do. Binghamton is the perfect mixture of fun and learning. You get the intense education, but at the same time, there's always time to meet up with friends and have fun!

    Bang for the buck

Absolutely. Binghamton's done to death slogan is the public ivy after all. Even as an out of state student, the tuition I am paying isn't exorbitant, compared to what it would be had I been an out of state student in another state's public university. Still, college is college, and it can get pricey.

    Tips for prospective students

Rainboots are a must at this school. The weather can be downright mucky at times, but that's how any other winter might be... just a bit more severe at Binghamton. Despite the weather, I wouldn't have chosen any other school.

Great for these types of students

It's definitely not the best for communications majors, since there is really no communications major, but it's great if you want to go into the sciences, whether it is the health sciences (they have an ALS accredited EMS, entirely run by students) or something else, specifically because it is a research institution.

The classes can be pretty tough, but you will definitely know your stuff when you graduate! Some of the professors are a little crazy, but that's because they are brilliant. There is also a ton of help like tutoring and the writing center.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something to do here. It is very easy to make friends, and everyone is smart. There are clubs galore and tons of sports. You can watch a soccer game, or cheer on the basketball team. All of the dorms have events all the time.

    Bang for the buck

Binghamton is basically a private school education for a public school price.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep up with your work, it can pile up on you!
    Make time to have fun!
Talk to an advisor, it isn't required to speak to one, but it really helps!

Wow, already done with first semester. It certainly hits you fast how different it is than high school. I have definitely learned a lot in terms of subject matter. The faculty I have encountered so far are very receptive to questions. If you can't meet with them during office hours, just shoot them an email. Or ask upperclassmen. There is also advising for whatever school you are in, as well as Discovery advising, which is later during the day with fellow students.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a common misconception that there is nothing to do at Bing. That couldn't be further from the truth! There are over 200 student groups, and more is always being added, so there is bound to be at least one that captures your interest. The school is also a bus ride away from shopping malls, Wegman's, Walmart, restaurants, etc. When it snows, it is highly recommended that you go traying. Traying is when you borrow a tray from the dining hall and use it as a sled down one of the hills.:) Also check out the exercise classes and facilities. Good for staying in shape, and we pay a $30 fee for it after all.

    Bang for the buck

Offers great education for a lower price. The financial aid package Bing offered me was the best compared to other colleges I got in to, like Boston University. My only recommendation would be for more washing machines and dryers for the laundry room, and more printers for the library. For those of you who are picky eaters like me, the food is eh. I tend to spend my meal plan on the sandwiches in the dining hall, or Night Owl. It pales in comparison to a real meal, but good enough. Health services could be a bit more accessible...

    Tips for prospective students

    -Time management is essential.
-Take a HARP 101 class. Half of the class is devoted to learning about resources on campus. It's also a small class of up to 25 students, so it is great for getting to know your peers, having discussions, and getting to know the teachers. It's only open to first semester freshmen anyway, so take the opportunity while it is there.
    -Know the bus schedule.
-Study for your classes. Real studying.
    -Check out the Nature Preserve.
-Be aware of some of the activities. Try to at least glance at the emails they send, or the posters, or the FB events.
    -Go to some of them.
    -Go to office hours.
-Get to know at least one faculty member per semester.
-Get slippers for the shower. You'll need it.
-Have at least 2 cab drivers' cards.
-If the class you want is closed, don't give up! Keep checking to see if an opening appeared. I have gotten in to classes I wanted this way. Also, people tend to drop classes a lot during the beginning of the semester, so check then also.
-When it comes to buying textbooks, I recommend Amazon.
-Join clubs you like, and stick to them. It's the enjoyment/commitment that matters, not the quantity.

Great for these types of students

-Those looking for a smaller campus.
-Those looking for a strong Liberal Arts program.
-Those who won't be disappointed by the lack of a varsity football team (we have co-rec football, if that is any consolation).
-Those who love to play sports, be it in the snow or at 3 AM.
-Those looking for a good school with a smaller price tag.
-There's something for everyone at Bing.

Unforgiving curriculum and weather. The atmosphere is great and the students are very friendly. There is a lack of interesting events and the town itself is also very dull.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not go if your out of state unless you have an immense scholarship. Sign up for dorms early because there is a wide breathe of quality in terms of housing. Despite being a city, Binghamton feels isolated which is difficult for many students to cope with

    Tips for prospective students

    Academic Rigor

The different dorm styles are great for everyone. Allows people to become more social.

    Food and Dining

The food is not good here to be honest but it is food and sometimes made well.

Binghamton University has been a very academic, challenging and exceptional institution for my higher education experience. I have gotten involved with many different clubs, theater, sorority, community service and continue to maintain over a 3.5 GPA. The education and experience here has been superior and the financial cost is more manageable than a private institution.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to work for your grades but also get involved in many activities that are offered on campus. Save extra money for the times you want to get off of campus and eat in different restaurants or shop. Although you will see construction on campus, you will know that Binghamton continues to update its dorms, student center, and living and learning quarters for future students.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor depends on the courses being taken. The math and science and economic courses are very rigorous compared to some other humanity courses.

    Dorm Life

Some dorms are noisier than others. Binghamton mixes floors by years and also are co-ed. There are suites available and also singles and triplets. Although I enjoyed my dorm I think I would rather have started out my freshman year on a freshman only floor. This would have enabled more interaction with the students living on my floor.

    Food and Dining

Like in any institution the food here is good until you decide you have had enough and need to get off campus and visit a real restaurant or just a Starbucks. The newer dorms have a variety of food stations including a kosher kitchen and vegetarian, and ice cream bar. The student union offers some outside vendors like Sushi or TCBY and will be under construction next year to enlarge it.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous activities including late night Binghamton, Bowling alley, concerts on campus, acapella night, basketball games (division 1) and Greek life. Since Binghamton is in Vestal,NY there are movie theaters, malls and lots of shopping. There are buses that organize trips and Cornell and Ithaca are only 45 minutes away. Downtown Binghamton has night life and Greek life.

    Bang for the buck

I am in a very competitive school for the price of a state school. The value is extremely beneficial since I will not be owing money when I graduate. For today's cost of higher education, one needs to seriously look at Binghamton University.

Great for these types of students

A student who wants to excel in academics, be involved in clubs and organizations and is used to being a top student with many friends. Pre-professional majors are popular and the science and engineering department is top notch.

    Greek Life

I am involved in a new charter sorority and it has been a great experience. We have mixers with fraternities, do community service, and host events.

    Tips for prospective students

You don't need to come here with your friends because it's easy to make new ones. It is really what you make of it here, my first year I didn't do a lot, but sophomore year I joined clubs and a fraternity and now I feel very content.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the classes you take. School of Management classes are generally easier than science classes. Rated on of the least workloads out of all top tier schools.

    Dorm Life

Dorm communities are comfortable with many newly built buildings. Everybody dorms their first two years because it's so convenient and fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is nothing special. Some days its good, some days it's bad.

    What to do for fun

I love being in Greek life. I also play a lot of pick up sports. I go out on the weekends. Seems like there's a lot of things to do, but it gets old after a couple of years.

Binghamton is a university on the larger side, but it feels like a much more intimate campus because the people here are friendly, motivated, and fun. It's probably one of the best values you could get for your money. The academics and reputation are top-notch and most people are very happy to be here.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with things. There are so many clubs here, and if you don't get involved right away, you might find yourself missing out on a lot of opportunities. The campus offers a lot of services, from internships to volunteering to counseling, and if you know where to look, you can take advantage of all of them.

    Academic Rigor

Most people aren't drowning in work, but the academics are definitely challenging. There is an emphasis on writing and taking a variety of gen-eds so you get to experience a lot of different classes. Be prepared to work and study if you get here, but it's not unbearable.

    Dorm Life

Each residential community is very different so you should research them all before picking one. The amenities are generally really nice, though, with two of the communities being almost brand new.

    Food and Dining

Each dorm has its own dining hall which makes it really easy to see people that you know when you go there for meals. There is a decent variety of food, though it does get a little repetitive after a while. There are many kosher, vegetarian, and halal options as well.

    What to do for fun

It seems like most people like to go downtown to a frat or bar on the weekends. Others, however, enjoy staying on campus, which can be equally fun. The school offers a Late Nite program that has lots of activities, movies, and food going on during Friday and Saturday night. The town itself is pretty dull but the students are a fun bunch.

    Bang for the buck

Most parents are thrilled to send their kids here because Binghamton is one of the best value colleges. Great price and stellar academics.

    Campus Safety

There are blue lights and police phones all over campus. The school has its own student-run ambulance that can meet you in several minutes and take you to a hospital if you have an emergency.

    Academic Rigor

schoolwork is difficult at times, but not overwhelming. most people have a challenging but manageable workload.

    Dorm Life

many of the communities have suite style dorms. suites are great. three double bedrooms off of a common room, so you share your bathroom with 6 people total instead of an entire floor. it's also nice because you can get to know the people you live with very well, and trust them with tvs/xbox/etc in the common room.

    Food and Dining

the food is solid. it's still campus food, and it gets boring after a long semester, but they do a pretty good job of trying to mix in some variety.

Binghamton offers a great variety of courses and the teachers I've had so far have been (with one notable exception) great. Most people consider it boring but I think they're just looking at the wrong places - there's plenty of stuff going on on campus if you just care to look, plenty of experiences to be had and ways to learn outside the classroom.

    Am learning a lot

I'm already a junior at Binghamton University and every day I wonder where the time has gone! Binghamton has so many options for multiple fields of study and has many options to acclimate you to college life. There are hundreds of majors to choose from and even a create-your-own program for those who want a very specific but non-established major. The work is tough, but part of college is buckling down and studying in order to learn what we need for our prospective career paths. As far as providing that opportunity, Binghamton more than manages.

    Am enjoying being here

Binghamton is a beautiful campus with a bunch of places to socialize and relax. The nature preserve is gorgeous and is perfect for walking and hiking. The surrounding town is focused around the college, with restaurants, stores, and places for fun like skating rinks, a movie theater (with a student discount) and a mall, all on a bus line from campus. Your ID card gets you on the bus free of charge, and so long as you know the schedule, having a car is practically optional. The campus is such a melting pot too! In addition to being ethnically diverse, there is a million different things to do every day and B-line always lets you know whats going on around campus.

    Bang for the buck

Binghamton is considered one of the most valuable schools in the SUNY system. Tuition is fair for the services rendered, and with a food plan and the bus system, most of a student's basic needs are accounted for on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Have rain/snow boots/an amazing umbrella. Binghamton weather is unpredictable and most of the incoming students don't know what they're in for.
    - Make learning the bus schedule a priority! The bus literally goes to most of the places you need to go, and if you know how to use it, a car is optional. This not only saves gas, but helps the environment, and since Binghamton is a green school, that's important.
    - Go to office hours early on. Not only do you have a better relationship with your professors, they tend to have more sympathy for grading issues because they see it as effort on your part.
    - Get involved with as many things as you can! There's hundreds of opportunities for volunteer work, extracurricular activities and just plain fun.
    - Visit the Career Development Center. They can help with internships, job opportunities and your decision for a career path.

Great for these types of students

    - Students that like a large campus
    - Students that prefer a green environment
    - Students that appreciate a suburban setting
    - Students that want to save on transportation
    - Students that want a diverse college experience

    Will learn a lot

This school has a great deal of majors, excellent class sizes, and is regarded to be the Harvard of the SUNY's. The number of clubs, groups, organizations, activities, etc offered here will make anyone become a better person, at the least.

    Will enjoy being here

This school provides a large number of students with a small school feel. It is a mid-sized school at 12,000 but when you are on campus it feels like and small town and that is very good depending on what the individual student wants.

    Bang for the buck

The school's tuition for New York residents is nothing short of cheap and money well spent.

    Tips for prospective students

Write a great college essay to show that you are personable because sometimes grades are not all that matter.

Great for these types of students

This school is good for the student who does not fear a challenge. All of the students attending Binghamton were at the top of their high school classes so you are always surrounded by the best of the best. If you would like a large group of kids with individualized attention then this school is perfect.

    Am learning a lot

I can't believe my first semester's almost over! It's been a lot of work but in the end you really know a lot. It has an amazing amount of course options, and encourages students to try new things. The professors vary a lot so it's guaranteed that some will get the point across.

There's a great campus culture; each dorm community has different activities to bring everyone together and the dorms themselves are nice. There's a lot of diversity in the student population, and I've learned to appreciate a lot of different types of people!

    Bang for the buck

Sure, it's a lot for room and board, but in-state tuition is only about $5000 and it has a ton of programs, on- and off-campus busing, and a load of cocurricular and extracurricular options. Plus, the schoolhas a great reputation so your time here is worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Prepare to study! I maintained a good average and got a 2280 on my SAT--never studied, never had a tutor all through highschool. Now, I study all the time! The professors expect you to keep up your end of the deal.

    Did learn a lot

My program: HDEV (Human Development) was brand new. I felt that I learned a little bit about everything, but not enough about anything. It was too broad. I think this degree doesn't even exist anymore, so no worries about following in my footsteps..... If it's helpful, I'm 4 years from my graduation, and I was never able to find a job....I didn't have a specific enough skill set and enough internship experience.

I was one of the first students to utilize the new downtown center for 95% of my classes. At the time I was a student there they most certainly didn't have the bugs out of coordinating the downtown center. My degree program was only one of I think 4 that was present in this building....considering that and the fact that it was a couple miles from the main campus it felt pretty alienating. I also felt a little bit threatened by the surrounding neighborhoods around the downtown center. I was an off-campus housed student, so parking downtown near the center was awful. They had very limited gated parking, and no good backup plans for the 100+ students that couldn't fit into the gated lot. This meant a lot of walking through shady areas to finally make it to the campus. To give them credit, they did have one security escort, but they would only walk you 3 blocks away from the school and then you're on your own. There is a shuttle bus that runs every 30 minutes most days back to the main campus....so on campus students definitely will find it safer and easier to get to the downtown center. I felt the classes were ok....I had a mix of great professors, so-so ones, and terrible ones. I did sense a disorganization of my classes since my program (Human Development) was brand new.

    Bang for the buck

I felt like the student center, the activities on campus, the health center, the on campus organic grocery store, and the late night events made the campus a pretty good buy. Parking passes for the semester can get expensive, but the college is fairly cheap tuition wise. The class sizes can get pretty large in 100-200 level classes: 150 or more students.... So it's up to you whether you think that's a deal or not.

    Tips for prospective students

If considering their MSW program, take into consideration that you're classes will all be at the downtown center and that this is designed for someone who has NO previous social work experience.

    Am learning a lot

Of course, classes depend on the professors, so there will always be classes where you do not learn as much. However, I took a couple introductory lecture courses and was please to find that the classes were still challenging, the professors were well-informed, and they were very helpful despite large class size. In addition, my smaller classes held high standards. The professors all seem very knowledgable in their subject areas. Also, there are a lot of subject area. I am double majoring in French and Human Development with a minor in Art - the size of the school means that they have a lot of classes in a lot of subjects so you can make sure you get a well-rounded education and can mix and match majors and minors as you like. They are strongest in the sciences and in engineering, but I have been pleased with my own major classes so far and even with the piano department, though it is small.

Going to a larger school is great. There is always something happening, much that is student run which is great because the students are really on fire for what they do. The University also sponsors a lot of career-based and program-based events. It has pretty good diversity as far as nationalities, economic backgrounds, and career interests, so you can both find people you click with and network with new kinds of people who can help you grow as a person. The university really does a lot to provide opportunities for you to get the most of life and education - you just have to take advantage!

    Bang for the buck

SUNY Binghamton is very very cheap. You probably won't get a lot of scholarships because of this, but it is about $18,000 a year, and as I stated earlier they have high standards, lots of opportunities, and lots of networking as far as careers and such. It is highly selective to get into. So you are getting top-quality education for a very low price.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of opportunities! It may be bewildering at first, but get involved in something and stick to it. This will especially help you meet upperclassmen. Don't be one of the seniors that wished they had taken advantage, but now faces the working world, and they never took an art class or studied abroad. Don't put stuff off - do it now! If you have to get a job to pay for it, get a job - now is not the time to chill out and do nothing because I worked so hard in high school.

All that said, college is the best time to form friendships, too, so make sure to take time for that, and even when you've made a few close ones, keep meeting people. After college, it's very hard to meet new people. Also, do things you wouldn't normally do. There is always something to love in any person - even if they wierd you out at first.

Great for these types of students

    1 - Pre-med (most common major)
2 - variety of interests (can mix and match majors and minors, study abroad)
    3 - low income
