Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I had a great orientation group my freshman year which taught me all the ins and outs of this place. The teachers here seem to have a real passion for their subject area. They're always available during their office hours and attempt to make their material as interesting as possible (I hated political science until I took Goldstein's class-brilliant!). Programs such as Learning Alliance and the Writers Resource Center (tutoring/advising centers) aid me with homework material and study advice.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy CSULB. The students are all pretty chill (for lack of better terms) and there are many diverse food venues. Every Wednesday at noon bands play near the Union Center. There are movie screenings every two weeks and a Student Rec. and Wellness Center will be finished in fall 2010 (rock climbing wall, beach vollyball courts, yoga/fitness classes, pool, indoor track, workout machines, juice bar... yata yata). Plus its close to the beach and downtown Long Beach where there is always something going on.
Bang for the buck YES! despite the economic status and budget cuts AND rise in tuition everywhere, it is still one of the least expensive universities in California. The campus is still running many programs which have a big outreach for students (psychological services, scholarship center, career development center, student support service program, student life and development, women's resource center intramural sports and wellness and associated students inc.) Plus they offer book rentals which make accessing GE books cheep and easy.
Tips for prospective students This really is a commuter campus, so the parking sucks. Get dropped off, or take public transportation (city bus free with student ID!) the first week of class. If you live on campus, there's a dandy shuttle system which makes it easy to get around campus. Prospective high school seniors: Apply to the Learning Alliance program- personal councilor for classes, support program and their own lounge. They have helped me through my college course planning and are extremely knowledgeable about the campus staff and classes.
Great for these types of students So Cal residents who want to save money by living at home but still want to go to an awesome university, out of state students who loath where they live (b/c of weather and/or location) and want to experience living in sunny Orange County/LA County.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot So far all of my 'General Education' classes have all but been repeats of my high school classes. That being said, I am learning a lot in my classes for my major.
Am enjoying being here Great campus, beautiful scenery, and wonderful people. The university does have some pretty ridiculous red tape for most things 'official,' though.
Bang for the buck I am paying out of state tuition to take 'General Education' classes. Only worth it because of the campus' locale; it is close the the hub of the film industry, the industry I'm gunning for.
Tips for prospective students If you want on-campus housing, apply EARLY! The applicant pool is always huge, and there really aren't that many total rooms.
Great for these types of students Great for in-state, initiative-taking, or laid back students.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the professors I have had are genuinely interested in seeing you succeed and pass their class while enjoying it! The more professors interact with classes and strive to make it bearable through lectures, the more you'll find yourself listening AND learning! You will surprise yourself with your ability to listen and understand and maybe even enjoy :)
Am enjoying being here About 90% of the students at CSULB are commuters which means they all live in LB or within driving distance. Coming from a town 10 hours away means that connecting and adapting is a lot harder because no one else is really on the same page as you. They have their lives, homes, families, friends, and childhood memories. They don't feel the need to connect or make friends like someone who has nothing or no one within a days drive
Tips for prospective students Having a car is a really great thing unless your in the dorms. Living off campus is a lot more fun, but VERY ridiculously expensive! You will need a room mate AND a steady pay check! You wont want to ride your bike or walk really that much at all during summer because you will be dripping with sweat by the time you get to class. Some winters it rains like crazy so think about transport or wardrobes! If you are into a laid back beach town and a fun VERY social campus then its a great University!
Great for these types of students Extroverts, Surfers, Artsy- people, Partiers, and Socialites.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You will not believe what you will learn inside and outside of the classroom. From the college learning you will find out a lot about yourself.
Am enjoying being here It is such a friendly environment. If you are coming to this school and leaving many friends behind you will make a ton of friends quickly. If you are coming to this school with your high school friends, then get ready to mack more friends as well. The school population is so diverse you are sure to find a friend. There are plenty of organizations and clubs to join that help enrich and support your learning.
Bang for the buck There is an economic dilemma in California but CSULB, or The Beach as we call it, is still the most affordable CSU in the system. Going to school as a commuter student is extremely affordable. If you live in the dorms as an in state or out of state student you will have to pay more but all of my friends that face this situation say that it is well worth it. Also, with our school being the most affordable in the CSU system we have an assortment of academic and personal support systems
Tips for prospective students Understand your work habits. If you need time to do your work do not heavily pack your schedule. Remember you can take summer school to get your units if you want to still try and graduate in four to five years. Also, make sure that you pay attention to how you schedule your classes so that you do not have to travel from one side of campus to the other side in fifteen minutes. It is not possible because of how big the campus is.
Great for these types of students Long Beach State is perfect for those who: love to go to the beach, are looking for a home away from home, improve their cultural awareness, who enjoy a social environment.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This college not only offers a variety of classes, it is a great place to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. The professors are very friendly, helpful, and intellectual. The campus offers many places to study, and has a variety of computer labs and tutoring services. Every professor teaches in their own way which allows students to have a diverse learning environment.
Am enjoying being here This campus is popular for its school pride and spirit. There are hundreds of clubs and extracurricular activities to join allowing you to make friends and feel comfortable. There are also many honor societies and fraternities that allows students to become more involved in volunteer work. CSULB is a great place for community service and education internships.
Bang for the buck The only negative thing about this campus is its rediculously high tuition costs and textbook prices. The economy is really suffering, but the students in college are suffering more. It is expensive to go to any cal state, but Long Beach is really worth the cost. You get to enjoy the great classroom benefits, school activities and service learning.
Tips for prospective students For future students, I recommend you take few units because too many may overwhelm you. Join clubs and get involved because it looks great on your resume. Also, do great academically and study hard because the school honors high achieving students. Don't worry too much about the size of the school, but try to learn your shortcuts because it does get crowded.
Great for these types of students Long Beach State is great for students that take education seriously because there are many opportunities to get ahead. It is wonderful for those that like getting involved and spending their time with other students. Everybody is really nice and welcoming which is good for those people that need to break free from their shyness. Long Beach is a great school and is good for anybody.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot If you ever need additional help/questions, the professors are always there during their office hours
Am enjoying being here There are numerous clubs & organizations you can join where everyone is friendly (I LOVE CSULB PAC). If you don't live relatively close in the area, living in the dorms for the first couple of years makes it easier to meet people. It is also very convenient and very fun because you create close bonds.
Tips for prospective students Try to register for classes as early as possible; they are known to fill up quickly
During the last few weeks for finals, the library is open for 24 hours and the USU is open later.
At the beginning of fall semester, you should attend Week of Welcome to check out all of the clubs and Greek organizations.Great for these types of students Laid-back, chill, social, interactive, friendly

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Not only you learn in class, but you'll learn things about life and social skills. College isn't only for the book smart but for the street smart too.
Am enjoying being here You have almost every group for every interest on campus.
Bang for the buck It's better than the UC because we pay 1/4 of what they pay for a whole year. But you still have to find way to get a bargain for the books.
Tips for prospective students If you have a car and have to park at school, parking is usually a distance walk from all the classes in south campus, unless you have class in Engineering, Dance, Business building. If you're going to dorm here pick Residence or Los Cerritos dorm, they're the closest to the classes. Parkside is the furthest. I tell you the distances of these places because some professors are time sensitive about their class. Some wouldn't allow you to enter or turn in your work if you're late. I scootered my way from the parking lot to south campus and got there in 10 minutes. But do be warned of the slope division on north and south campus when trying to get to class.
Great for these types of students Those who love to bike, to walk, to eat great food (there's lots of great places around and in school), to go the beach (only a few blocks from the beach), to be outdoors, and like smaller class enivornment (classes are max about 200 and min about <20)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much compared to high school. The teacher expectations are reasonable and I learned useful information whether it was towards my major or not.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and has many opportunities. It is in a great location with the beach and shopping close by. The students and faculty on campus are willing to help and get to know you better.
Bang for the buck CSULB is worth every penny. It is one of the cheaper state schools but that doesn't mean it has less technology, classes, and jobs. There are plenty of loans and scholarships available as well. If you live at home and commute it's even cheaper!
Tips for prospective students Keep up with extra-curricular activities and apply for scholarships! Take a tour on campus to get a feel for what it has to offer. Make sure CSULB has the right major for you, and if you are unsure, apply anyway because you can figure it out there.
Great for these types of students Anyone who is laid-back, willing to meet new people, and is open to a diverse student body. Anyone looking for a fun time, interesting classes, good food, and great friends.

Bang for the buck Tuition is not bad if you compare it to other schools in California

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot After my first year I have learned a lot about the school and in my education. Every professor and their different personalities makes learning much easier. You don't only learn from the professors. but the students too because different people know different things from their classes.
Am enjoying being here I love the atmosphere its very open and diverse, and people are usually friendly and free spirited.
Bang for the buck Even with the fees going up it is very much well worth it.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you schedule your classes near by because if not you will be running from one class to another.
Get involved don't pay all that money when you are not going to get involved because that is what makes it more enjoyable.
Getting a bike will make getting around much easier.
You will always be able to find help for anything.Great for these types of students People who are open-minded and free spirited.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor The teachers here are amazing! if you don't understand something you can go to the tutoring labs whenever you want or you can meet up with your Professor during their office hours
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do here especially if you dorm or get involved in clubs. You can go to the Recreation center anytime they close at midnight. If you decide to go somewhere but you don't have a car its okay because you can ride the long beach transit for free. I think that its really awesome. The people here are really nice.
Bang for the buck You get discount for being a student here! You can go to IHop and get a 20 percent discount. Its really awesome. you can also watch movies here for a discounted price. you also get discounts to theme parks.
you are able to get all the help you need ( the horn center, the writing resource lab, the math recourse lab, the LAC@the horn center, CAPS, the health center...etc) At the health center you can get any medicine you may need for a discounted price. make sure to apply for Family pact. they help you with family planing, std testing, hiv testing, and a pap (for girls). Lots of good Stuff to help you stay healthy.
You just really get your money's worth. Its a big campus but beautiful and its by the Beach. There is so much to explore.Tips for prospective students When you are planning your class schedule make sure that you have enough time to get from one class to another because it is a big campus and you can get lost.
If you plan on dorming pick your roommate carefully. I was lucky and i got an awesome roommate. One more thing, make sure you stay on top of your financial aid! Take advantage of all the resources this campus has to offer.Great for these types of students Happy, flamboyant, and just looking to have an awesome college experience=)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm taking courses from different subjects than I did in high school, so not only do I have the benefit of a fresh start, but I'm also learning a lot about subjects that I hadn't had any education in before.
Am enjoying being here When I was applying for college, CSULB was my last choice, but because of financial reasons I ended up there. Since school started, however, I'm having a great time and enjoying myself a lot more than I thought I would. There are a lot of great places to hang out and a lot of good organizations to get involved in!
Bang for the buck Generally, Cal State schools charge about $10,000 less in tuition than UCs and MUCH less than private schools. So you're already saving a bunch of money there for the same practically the same education. Plus, if you live off-campus, you save the room and board expenses and can graduate without amassing a huge student debt. I'm really enjoying myself and saving a lot of money in the process.
Tips for prospective students Don't let the CSU label fool you if you're looking at top schools like I was. CSULB is at the top tier of the CSUs, so much so that it will be turned into a UC before too long. It really is a great school, and you should be excited about going there.
Great for these types of students Opportunistic, don't have a huge ego, practical.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a biology major at CSULB and I love it here. In my first semester of biology I learned alot and am absolutley in love with the course material. Dr. Dillon is a must have for Bio 211. The labs are not very interesting in the first half of the class but towards the end the certainly begin to be more biology oriented. Now I must warn some of you about the chemistry department, although Dr. Garber does know alot about Chem, unless you are also and expert I would suggest a different teacher. Also in all of your science classes enroll in the corresponding SI not only will you acquire a good study group but students who take SI earn on average one letter grade higher then students who dont. Plus you get an extra unit for showing up! Believe me SI will make a lot of difference!!
Am enjoying being here I do truly enjoy being at CSULB. I am from Northern California and was nervous at how Southern California people would treat me. But much to my suprise everyone was really friendly. I lucked out and got a great roommate and we are best friends, along with two of our suitemates. In the beginning you will definitly be able to tell that most students are from nearby and have alot of friends there already. However, by the second semester especially most people have no started to look to broaden their friend base. Almost every teacher is willing to help you with any of your problems and the people in the Horn Center are very accomodating and will answer all of your questions. For any math and science majors, the people at the SAS center are super nice and friendly and will help you with EVERYTHING! That is not an exaggeration. The actually city can be intimidating but you'll be able to tell (especially in seal beach and huntington beach) that everybody is relaxed and it is definitly a beach town.
Bang for the buck Yes this truly is a great bang for the buck!!! I was accepted at UCSC and the biggest difference was the $10,000 difference in expenses!!!! California is going through major budget cuts, but even with increasing tutition CSULB is still one of the least expensive universities.
Tips for prospective students Although 32,000 students sounds like a huge number I have never felt overwhelmed at this school. Most lectures I've had have had over 100 students in it but the lab sections make up for it and give you a great one on one opportunity with your instructors. Also other classes, like math, comm, or other ge's have class sizes similar to high school. All teachers have office hours to make up for not being able to answer all questions in class. Also only about 2,000 students live on campus so at night and weekends you have a very close knit community of residents.
Great for these types of students I think that all students will thrive here. As long as you are willing to get the help you need for each class and take initiative on your studies you will thrive. Also learn the art of studying effectively because like every college your grade is determined mainly by test scores and as nice as the professors are their job is not to babysit you and sugar coat everything.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences California State University has provided me with the appropriate skills to pursue my graduate studies in Europe. This excellent university holds a large number of influential educators that have supported me throughout my undergraduate studies. Personally, I feel fortunate to have graduated from this university with the best of memories.
Tips for prospective students For future students who are planning to attend California State University Long Beach I advice them to think twice about what they are planning to study. It took me approximately two semesters to realize that Journalism was not the right major for me. If students come to this University not knowing exactly what they want to study, I would say to not worry and take time in figuring it out. Attend lectures that you think might be interesting; take courses that you would never imagine taking, talk to advisers from different departments about their programs, etc. Do not be afraid to take risks.
Make lasting relationships with professors is another significant tip that I would give future students. During my first year at California State University Long Beach I attended lectures but never made conversation with the professors. During the last three years I noticed that being not only a student in the professors classroom but being a friend benefited me immensely. I have received wonderful recognition letters, recommendation letters and advice from professors because of the lasting friendships. I would advice students to not be afraid to talk to the professor and attend their office hours, ask questions, ask for advice, and even strike up a random conversation.Academic Rigor It is not a surprise that, California State University Long Beach, one of the best Universities in southern California asks for nothing but the best from the students attending and applying. The university highly values educational opportunity, excellence, diversity, integrity, and service. Noted as one of the nations 50 Best Value public universities by the Princeton Review, it become evident that one can attend the university and receive a highly valued degree. I give my university five golden starts for their excellent work in educating students for more than fifty years.
Dorm Life Although I never lived in the dorms at my University, the housing and residential life is an excellent way to meet people and explore the sunny city of Long Beach. Equipped with 18 residence hall buildings that can house more that 2,000 students, it provides students with the opportunity to be close to campus and the chance to feel at home. During the four years that I was attending California State University Long Beach, I lived outside of campus at an apartment with two roommates. I was given the chance to apply and live in the dorms but registered after the submission date. It is important to consider the prices and registration dates to live in the dorms before the semester begins; living in the dorms is popular in the University, especially among first years, and is crucial to learn more about living in a dorm before registering. I give the dorm life at my university four stars for the excellent safety precautions that they follow to keep all students safe.
Food and Dining The food and dining services at California State University Long Beach provide students with an excellent variety of places to eat at. The Nugget Grill and Pub, located near the Bookstore, is an excellent restaurant that offers popular sport games on a big screen television for all students, it has the best turkey burger and provides students with the perfect social ambiance. During the 2010 FIFA world cup, student flocked The Nugget to watch Spain and Netherlands fight for the gold cup. Then there is The Outpost, a delicious restaurant to attend if you need to grab a quick bite before class. Located near the Engineering and Journalism buildings, it provides students with affordable fast food such as pizza, sandwiches and salad. Adjacent to the Outpost is a small convenient store that has all the necessities a student needs such as food, refreshments, scantrons, pencils, pens, paper, etc.
A favorite coffee shop among all students is Starbucks, which is located in the library. Known as one of the best coffee shops around the world, it serves all the students at my university who need a quick wake up before class or even after a long day of studying. Affordable coffee for coffee lover and addicts, it is definitely one of the best places to grab a delicious coffee on campus. I give my university five stars because of the affordable prices, delicious food, and excellent services. What to do for fun There is always something entertaining to do at California State University Long Beach. If it is a hot day, students can go swimming at the Student Union's pool, can go for a quick run on campus, or even cool off at the Student Union's bowling alley. The beautiful Art Museum is available all semester for the students to go and observe, the Recreation Center is the perfect place for students to work out and catch up with friends, and, a personal favorite, upper campus in the Central Quad where students lay on the grass and absorb some sun. My university is known as a commuter school but is heavily equipped with student events such as movie nights, concerts, benefits, fairs, etc. for all students to enjoy throughout the school year.
Bang for the buck The value of education is priceless. Having the opportunity to study at an excellent University, I noted that the price was not cheap. However, considering the value of my degree, the cost that I spent to attend the school is insignificant. The university has provided me with skills that I can take with me for the rest of my life; skills that I can apply to anything that I want to pursue. The tuition, if a student is registered for more than 7 units, is a total of $2,985.00 per semester. If a student is attending the university for a graduate program the cost is a bit higher. Clearly, the prices are rising but so is the demand for educated people all around the globe. Knowledge is priceless; one cannot put value on education and should not avoid school because of the cost. Clearly, all schools, no matter the cost to attend, will help any student in need. I give my university four stars because although the cost is increasing every year, it continues to assist all students wanting to attend but are having issues paying.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Located upper campus next to the Hall of Science is the famous 4.0 hill. All students in desperate need of straight A's are told to barrel down the hill in the beginning of the semester to actually achieve such an accomplishment. A tradition that many claim is true, it is a popular event that occurs at the beginning of every semester among many students at California State University Long Beach.
Great for these types of students The Learning Assistance Center, located in the Horn Center, is a wonderful place to get tutored and/or be a tutor. This tutoring center provides students with assistance such as individual tutoring, group tutoring and even learning skills workshops. Subjects such as Spanish, Philosophy, English, Math, Science, etc are available for all students struggling in such classes. ESL students who need to pass English proficiency exams are also welcomed in the center and are given the chance to request an individual tutor for the whole semester at no cost. This center is perfect for any student that wants to improve in their class or to receive assistance in English.
Clubs and Activities The Spanish club held by the Spanish department is a wonderful club that meets the first Friday of every month for an hour in the afternoon. Discussing literature, authors, politics, etc., they form a tight community of students studying the beautiful romance language. Students of any major are welcomed to attend the meetings and become part of the club; students do not even have to speak the language to become part of the club. The club hosts movie nights that show classic Spanish films from Latin America and Europe, they support local artists and host theater acts for the students on campus. Last week, the Spanish club hosted a play about Frida Kahlo's life.
Clubs at the university are diverse and continue to grow every year. Students are eager to form their own small community and constantly advertise their club for all students to attend. California State University Long Beach holds a large number of clubs that will continue to represent the university as an excellent school. I give clubs and activities at my university four stars for their excellent effort in representing the diverse students at the university.Greek Life The Greek life at California State University Long Beach is significantly diverse and is constantly flourishing. Although I have no personal experience in a sorority and have never affiliated myself in a sorority, I have great friends that are in one and love it. Similar to living in the dorms, you meet people that you will consider family. Students in sororities or fraternities attend educational events, host events of their own, focus on a specific cause, etc. Students in sororities or fraternities are acknowledged for their academics, leadership, and community service.
Campus Safety Campus safety is excellent on campus, which is why I give the school five stars. Campus police is constantly concerned about the students safety day and night. Emergency alarms are set up all around campus for students to use if they are ever in danger. If an event occurs, all students are immediately emailed about the event; text messages are also used by the campus to inform all students of an event. During the late hours, campus police offers students with rides to the parking lots. Since the parking structures are far from the major buildings, the campus police takes the students to their cars and makes sure that they make it safely to their car. On a Friday night during finals week I stayed at the library late; I was nervous of walking alone at night so I called campus police to have someone walk me to my car. Campus safety at my university is excellent and it continues to improve throughout the year.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This school requires a good amount of studying and focus, plus you'll be walking quite a bit from class to class. It has a laid back atmosphere, and the teachers are helpful. It's a very good value for the price.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to get your books used to save money.
Academic Rigor You'll want to set aside a good amount of study time per day. The library is pretty quiet, so carve out a space there.
Dorm Life The dorms are a little bit small, but everyone is friendly.
Food and Dining They have a very good selection of different cuisines on campus.
What to do for fun Greek life is fun on campus. Make sure to at least join a club to complete your college experience.
Bang for the buck You really do get a complete experience here. The school is enormous and there is so much to do in terms of sports and recreation.
Great for these types of students This school is great for those that like a spread out school with a hugely diverse student populace.
Clubs and Activities Check out the business clubs.
Greek Life The parties are intense and fun, but you might need a liver transplant afterwards.
Campus Safety Campus police are always around.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot From the beginning of SOAR (summer day orientation) to the classes that I have now, I'm learning a lot not just in academics but also about the school and what it has to offer me as a student. There are countless resources here, from the Writing Lab (which helps students with papers and essays) to the Residential and Academic Advisors; there's always someone with the answer to your question (or someone who can direct you to the person with the answer)! The classes are definitely challenging in that they ask you to really think about their topics and who you really are as a person; the professors are typically willing to help you during their office hours if you have any questions.
Am enjoying being here My first impression of this place was definitely not what I think of it now. At first, I was a bit concerned because it didn't seem as luxurious as the UC's or private schools. However, my Residential Advisor has made our hallway feel like home and, after having a chance to really explore the campus, I know that Cal State Long Beach has much to offer its students. The people I meet in my dorm and my classes have made my experience here pretty enjoyable so far and the food in my dorm is definitely excellent!
Bang for the buck Sometimes, we'll have to pay an extra fee or two (it typically depends on your major), but considering that the pay is still a lot less than other schools, I'd say it's definitely worth it!
Tips for prospective students Definitely look into housing because Cal State Long Beach offers really unique dorms: there's the International Housing (where you get to dorm with people out of this country) and the Residential Learning Community (an off-campus dorm that offers its own class/course selection, a shuttle that goes back and forth to campus around every fifteen minutes, and really really good food). Make sure you balance out your academics with your social life because social life is important (and there are definitely lots of really unique people you'll meet!) but the classes aren't always just the ones you can sleep through. Take advantage of all the resources that you're offered here at Long Beach because there are A LOT.
Great for these types of students Cal State Long Beach has much to offer to anybody, whether you're looking to be a nursing, art, or engineering major. It also has majors that not many schools have, such as communicative disorders. Academics aside, the school also has a really nice recreational center (with a rock climbing wall!) and many clubs for its students. Basically, anyone will find something they enjoy about this school!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I feel like I'm learning just as much here as I would anywhere else.
Am enjoying being here As a commuter, it's very difficult to become involved with on-campus activities or events. However, I have managed to make a few great friends and a couple create treasured memories.
Bang for the buck Although CSULB is a state school, going here is still awfully expensive. As a commuter, expenses will often go more towards gas for transportation, so there's an obvious set back. So in order to really get your money's worth, live on or near campus and get involved with things on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Attending a university campus close to the beach, enjoying the Southern California weather and interacting with a diverse student population is what sold me to attend. The science department is fast and growing with many tutoring and research opportunities. And there are also many student organizations you can become a part of from sports to activism.
Tips for prospective students Study. Study. Study. However, don't forget to put the books down and enjoy a sunny afternoon every now and then.
Academic Rigor As a biochemistry major, the courses require an ample amount of studying so be sure to keep up with all your classes, then finals will not be so difficult.
Food and Dining The best place to eat is at the Nugget. However, if you like fast food chains ... there are plenty to choose from. In addition, there are two Starbucks on campus and one Coffee Bean.
What to do for fun You can relax under the trees, check out the artwork and exhibits in the art departments, watch a sports game in the Walter Pyramid, work out at the gym, enjoy a performing arts show at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, dine at the Nugget with your friends, or cruise down to the beach.
Bang for the buck Having a Starbucks located inside the library is a major plus!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Walter Pyramid is an exceptional site to see when you first arrive on campus. It is big and blue and you cannot miss it! The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is also a beauty to see and the Friendship Walk on campus is always fun to take when you need some down time between classes. The campus is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the ancient Tongva village and burial site known as Puvunga are believed to be located on campus. In addition, the Pow Wow is every year!
Great for these types of students If you like the Southern California weather, participate in or watch sports games, enjoy the performing arts, like participating in student organizations, volunteer in your community, love filming, enjoy symphonic music, like having the beach close by and like site seeing, then this is the campus for you.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences An excellent University with top notch resources at a manageable price! It has an excellent community environment where you interact with many people and it becomes just like a huge high school where everyone knows each other in some way and school becomes extremely enjoyable and personable. Overall, an amazing school with immense opportunities combined with an unforgettable experience.
Tips for prospective students You should definitely dorm on campus, it enhances the college experience drastically and contributes to your adult development of individuality. Take advantage of the easier entrance classes to boost your gpa, because the upper division courses serve as a tough challenge. Put all of your effort currently into passing your AP tests, they are gold once you arrive at college.
Academic Rigor With 5 being the most difficult, Long Beach State definitely provides a challenge. They are difficult enough to require ample study time to ace, but not overwhelming.
Dorm Life The dorm set up is amazing as far as Parkside is concerned, because i personally believe it so be the best set up in regard to the community feeling and creating close friendships with your suite mates. However, Alamitos, Residence, and Cerritos are more of a hotel hallway where you have to go out of your way to interact with others, yet still a great experience. the new RLC is off campus, so the commute is a nuisance, but you also benefit from the modern design and your own pool at the dorm.
Food and Dining Honestly, everyone else disliked the food more than me, but you have to get creative with the options they provide you. The main entrees made each meal are not always the greatest, but any time you can order a grilled cheese sandwich, quesadilla, or baked chicken breast along with pasta and a subway sandwich bar. Provided all those options I was never really disgusted with the food, there were always delicious options. Additionally, each day has its own specific bar, my personal favorites being Asian bar day (unlimited orange chicken) and American bar day (unlimited hot dogs and chicken nuggets), so the food was amazing for me.
What to do for fun There are numerous events created for entertainment, literally an endless amount, anything from line dancing events to discounted $40 tickets to Disneyland. The brand new Rec center offers several activities such as racquetball, rock climbing, basketball, swimming, volleyball, indoor soccer, and all of the standard weightlifting and cardio equipment you can think of to keep you entertained and physically fit. Additionally the student union contains a ten lane bowling alley, pool, ping pong, and gaming area as well as its own movie theatre to pass the time.
Bang for the buck There are absolutely no complaints I have so far from this school, and at the lower end of the price spectrum for colleges, that is an amazing statement. The entertainment, experience, opportunities, and education is excellent for an affordable price.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus CSULB's gym is a huge pyramid that is amazing to witness both inside and out and serves as one of the most unique gyms I have ever seen. The school has amazing traditions centered around its sports, one being the student section where student pack in next to each other and yell chants that echo throughout the pyramid during basketball games.
Great for these types of students If you do not want an overwhelmingly large school and enjoy the strong community feeling of knowing most of the school, you will love this place. Outgoing student with plenty of school spirit will fit right in. Additionally, if you love to go to the beach, you cannot beat Long Beach State; 5 minutes and you're at a beach, and easily 10 different beaches within 30 minutes of the school.
Clubs and Activities Numerous clubs are available for anything from salsa dancing to engineering clubs that build baja racers. There is a huge diversity when it comes to school clubs and the immense activities offered magnify the variety of opportunities. Activities include horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, six flags trips, talent shows, nfl games, nhl games, and movies on the lawn to name a few.
Greek Life I personally have not participated much in the Greek life at CSULB, but it is extremely involved and seems fun. Their rush events are a blast even if you are not interested in joining the fraternities.
Campus Safety The security on campus is amazing! The campus has their own police station and there is always an officer driving around patrolling an area everywhere you look. Additionally, there are alert posts located throughout the school that you can press and talk to an officer instantly whether there is an emergency or you just want a ride to your destination to ensure your safety. I have never felt my safety threatened at any time at Long Beach State.

Tips for prospective students Students should become involved in the school, either by joining ASI or a club.
Academic Rigor My classes were pretty easy as 100 but now in my major courses its gotten really tough.
Dorm Life I'm not sure, I don't stay in the dorms, but from what I've heard you only share the your room with one other person.
Food and Dining I have no idea.
What to do for fun You can go to the Japanese Garden on campus, go to student art galleries, or go to the USU and play video games, bowling, pool, etc.
Bang for the buck You are getting your moneys worth!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the school restrooms we have chalkboards, where people can write anything-its awesome.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students majoring in arts and engineering,
Clubs and Activities All the clubs are supper fun, I'm fond of archery.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I give it about a 4 out of 5 stars. Great atmosphere as a college campus.
Tips for prospective students Definitely a school for students who wants to major in Psychology. Not only is the school great, but the Psychology department is great also. They are very helpful and the Professors are great.
Academic Rigor Depending on what major you choose will determine how strict the academic requirements are. For majors, like biology, Psychology, or Accounting, the academic requirement are a little more strict.
Dorm Life I don't know from experience, but from what I've heard from my friend's, they really enjoy living at their dorms and missed it when they had to leave.
Food and Dining A great variety of choices. We have Subway, Carl's Jr, Pizza, El Pollo Loco, etc. A great thing about the location of the campus is that it is close to other good restaurants if your not satisfied with the ones on campus.
What to do for fun There are always events posted around campus. I love the Rec center, it's sort of like a 24 hour fitness gym. There is also a gaming room, bowling alley, ping pong, or pool tables.
Bang for the buck The Education you receive from the school
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Union is the best spot to relieve some stress or going to the Beach Hut to get a beer.
Great for these types of students The campus life, fraternities, and those who love to volunteer
Clubs and Activities There are many school activities and clubs for students, especially during club week.
Campus Safety A very safe school with many security guards and cameras all over the campus. If an incident occurs, the school has a system that will notify all the students within 30 minutes of the occurrence.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences CSULB has many opportunities and has much to offer its students. It is up to the students to take advantage of all that is provided to them so that the school can continue offering such services.
Tips for prospective students College is all about independent work since teachers are no longer individually pestering you for you to turn in assignments. It is up to you to do the work required and keep up, as well as visit office hours to get to know professors and try getting any tips for class.
Academic Rigor There are several easy classes but as the semesters pass by, the classes continue getting more difficult and requirements can make graduating on time extremely difficult.
Dorm Life Since the school is somewhat of a commuter school, weekends are typically very dead on campus and there isn't much to do. However, the RAs do provide many discounted outings that are somewhat difficult to sign up for.
Food and Dining While I personally enjoyed the food in the dining halls, there were many complaints of the food. However, there is always a wide array with the constant salad, cereal, and themed bars, and it is all buffet style so there is much food for consumption.
Campus Safety The school has a campus escort system that takes students from whatever the location straight to their car to avoid any dangerous situations on the walk from campus to parking lot.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This university has a lot to offer students in a variety of different majors. The school is well-networked in order to continue on with career opportunities or further education. The huge negative aspect of this school is the inability to get into your classes needed to graduate (classes are full and you are capped in the number of credits you can sign up for) and along with a delayed graduation the tuition keeps rising.
Tips for prospective students It is in your best interest to seek help from both general academic advisers as well as your major academic adviser. They will give you critical information about staying on track with your classes and the opportunities in which you might participate during your studies here.
Academic Rigor Basic science courses are very intense here. For the purposes of keeping up your GPA as well as saving money, you may want to take some courses at a community college.
Each major varies in academic difficulty, and the difficulty of each professor varies widely as well.Dorm Life I did not live in the dorms, but my sister did and she said to make sure you know what kind of person would compliment your living style. Also, know which dorms are known for party or quiet study atmospheres according to what you prefer.
Food and Dining I have never been to the dining hall, although I heard the food can be quite boring. The restaurants like Subway and Robeks are nice to have on campus.
What to do for fun There are pool table and a bowling alley and a lot of areas to play sports outside.
Great for these types of students The campus is beautiful and the weather is great for most of the year, so if sunshine and a nice location are of interest to you, this is great school.
Clubs and Activities There are DOZENS of clubs to get involved with.

Academic Rigor Some classes give too much workload, some classes don't give you any!
Dorm Life I do not dorm at this school.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Nearby to my home, definitely a SoCal vibe. Nice big campus and a good atmosphere. Has an Apparel D&M major(yay!) and seems like it has a lot of good programs/resources/activities.
Academic Rigor Some majors are impacted, but it seems like if you go here, there are good, rigorous classes and programs. This school also allows Double Majors.
Dorm Life I live nearby but am required to spend my freshman year in the dorms. I wouldn't mind because it seems like a good place to meet friends and colleagues.
Food and Dining The Student Union and other places had lots of dining options. There are also a lot of good places off campus to go nearby.

Tips for prospective students Good area, near the beach, great professors, make sure to talk to your advisors to see if you're on track with what you want to do.
Academic Rigor GE classes are not that difficult, I recommend taking Theater 113, you will have so much fun! Other than GE classes, once you get into classes for your major or pre-reqs it can get stressful and hectic because often times it is hard to get the classes you need especially if you are a freshman like myself.
Dorm Life From what I hear from my friends, they love it! I commute unfortunately.
Food and Dining My friends tell me the food is okay, but does get repetitive and bland.
What to do for fun Walk around! Go to the beach! Hangout with friends at the dorms!
Bang for the buck Minor setbacks, but it is a great place to learn.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences If you live in California and go here it is true what they say about it, it's the best/cheapest school for your money. Some of the programs at this school are great, however not easy to get into because you have to apply for them if your major is impacted. Due to policy changes it may not be as easy to graduate in 4 years, but if you take summer school and maybe winter session, it can still be possible.
Tips for prospective students The staff here are friendly and the atmosphere at school is very open and easy going. Be prepared to do a lot of walking at this school.
Academic Rigor The courses are definitely not as hard as a UC, but it's easy to go through an easy class and slack off, but just stay on track and you'll pass with A's.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms are pretty expensive especially if you don't get any grants or scholarships. Some of the dorms are somewhat like a hotel where there are hallways and you walk down the hall to go to each room, but the bathrooms are out down the hall. and some of dorms are more apartment style. Parkside is known to have the best food at their dining hall.
Food and Dining There are numerous places you can go to eat here or buy food: Panda Express, Carls Jr., Subway, El Pollo Loco, The Nugget, Beach Hut, Beach Cafe, Robek's, Coffee Bean, Starbucks, Sbarro. Since there are many places you can choose from you'll never get stuck with having to eat the same kind of food, but buying food from the convenience stores are more expensive than buying those same items from the grocery store. There's also a buffet at school that has pretty decent food that isn't crowded.
What to do for fun You can go bowling, work out at the gym, play pool, ping pong, chill in the lounge, play video games.
Bang for the buck Buying a parking pass for the whole year is only worth it if you go to school a lot, otherwise just buy it per semester. This is also one of the cheapest CSU's. Paying for your tuition includes being able to use the gym (recreation center) for free and also enables you to use some of the services at the student health services.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Sometimes there are celebrations with food, games, entertainment and music around the student union. This year there was a celebration with these things and an outdoor movie night celebrating the 40th anniversary for the Student Union.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences CSULB is a fairly good university at a good price to those who don't have a lot of money. Some programs are very amazing here such as the art programs; however, that depends on the professor. That's why I say it is fairly good: some classes are incredible depending on the professor you get.
Tips for prospective students Please seek out your interests, take personality tests, and get to know yourself and what you like as much as possible so you don't waste time figuring out what your major is. Research careers and job prospects. Join clubs and make sure you feel like you belong somewhere. This is a commuter school so it can be hard to make friends as a commuter. Internships are incredible experience so seek those early. Apply to scholarships; as many as possible! You never know what you might win.
Academic Rigor This depends on your professor. Art program is pretty rigorous no matter what the specialty. I am pretty sure it depends on your major and your professor.
Dorm Life This depends on your personality. I didn't stay in the dorms because it is expensive and I am introverted and like my own space.
Food and Dining The food is good and we have great convenience stores everywhere. I love our healthy food choices and our Robek's!
What to do for fun There is usually always something going on. Again, if you're outgoing you will find a lot to do. We have a great gym and outdoor pool for hanging out. There are on campus events and clubs. There's the annual Human Relations Summit where you go to the mountains and talk about human relationships and it is free. There's stuff to do but you have to look around at the posters and be aware!
Bang for the buck It is a great school with a lot of great facilities, resources, and professors for the money you are paying. The people can be really cool, down to earth, and smart.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a beautiful Japanese Garden, an awesome Art Museum, a cool career resource center, the coolest student rec center, amazing track, beautiful dance center and music buildings, and beautiful art sculptures in different places on campus that you can get a self, ipod tour of.
Great for these types of students Outgoing, slight slacker, fun-loving, smart, organized, and open-minded.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and a lot of things to do. Look at the signs!
Greek Life There are a lot of fraternities and sororities that I don't take part in.
Campus Safety There are nice police and a lot of emergency posts. We have escorts and escort cars that take you to your car that is parked far away.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Cal State Long Beach is an exceptional school. I am positive I made the right choice and I am more than happy and satisfied with my college experience thus far. The professors are all top notch, and the atmosphere is great. I couldn't be happier.
Tips for prospective students Look into things early as most majors will become impacted, making it harder to get in and adding more requirements for acceptance. Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It is a very big school, but very laid back. The campus is beautiful and it has great resources (recreation center, hospital, library, etc). There are a ton of on campus organizations and tons of opportunity to meet people and have fun.
Academic Rigor There are a lot of great teachers who all know what they are talking about. The workload isn't insane, but its definitely no community college, and you can tell who cares about their work.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms is SUPER fun. There is a great opportunity to meet a lot of great people, however the food is mediocre and it is a bit overpriced. The rooms are pretty decently sized and they are maintained regularly.
Food and Dining The dining hall food is not all that great...
however there are a lot of on campus options, including sandwich shops, starbucks, mexican food, etc. What to do for fun you can go to the recreation center (gym), the beach, there are a lot of clubs, and LA and Hollywood are not too far away.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences California State Long Beach is an incredibly diverse school with many opportunities for their students. The teachers are incredibly helpful and guide their students to success. The campus is beautiful with many new buildings, especially in the science department.
Tips for prospective students To get into CSULB you must have a high GPA (3.5) and a high test scores but some people do get in with average grades and gpa. I would recommend doing as much community service as possible.
Academic Rigor I am a science major with some experience in the Engineering department. In my experience I have found the course work to be very challenging but do-able if you put enough time into you studies. Office hours are also very helpful for clarifying information and preparing for tests.
Dorm Life Dorm life is average. The rooms are small and the buildings are old. The RAs are usually nice and there are plenty of activities to do through the dorms. The location is prime and makes going to class easy and quick.
Food and Dining The food is poor. There are few vegetarian options. The food rotates on a monthly cycle and gets old after a while. RLC has more choices but they are an off campus dorm.
What to do for fun There is a ton to do for fun at CSULB and the surrounding area. The student union puts on plenty of school activites and events. Sporting events like basketball or baseball are fun. We have a rec center to work out, play basketball, rent camping equipment, ect. The beach is about a mile from the campus. LA and Hollywood are only an hours drive. There is so much to do.
Bang for the buck They keep raising our tuition every semester which is annoying. Summer classes are incredibly expensive as well. But overall I think the tuition is average in comparison to other colleges.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have 2 places that serve beer on campus. We have a bowling alley and many locations to rent piano rooms. We have many open art galleries.
Great for these types of students Great for diverse open minded students. Great for students who work hard. Great for most people.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs on campus. At the beginning of each semester there is a week where all the clubs set up and allow people to sign up.
Greek Life There are 6 large sororities and 13 fraternities. I was an Alpha Phi for 2 years. The Greek life interfered with my studies but many people find it enjoyable.
Campus Safety CSULB is one of the safest schools. There are blue lights that signal directly to campus police that you can run and activate if in trouble. The escorts can take you to your car if you are on campus late. The shuttles run almost all day. Campus police is located on campus and always available to help.

Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms so I can't really say anything.
Food and Dining They have great food choices but I just wish there was more variety.
What to do for fun Cosmic bowling at the USU!
Great for these types of students Open minded students, social, extroverts.
Clubs and Activities There are LOTS of clubs and activities for everybody! I am currently enrolled in National Society of Collegiate Leagues and I am looking forward to joining the salsa club at school.
Greek Life I am not in a sorority but I have friends that are currently in sororities and they love it.
Campus Safety I have never felt unsafe while being at school.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This institution is unlike any other; with all the necessary requirements of a high school graduate. college is very important to my field of film making, which this college program for film is the best.
Academic Rigor I'm a team play when it comes to working with others. My goal in life is to become a director; however it won't be an easy task. Last thing is my leadership skills can be over the top.
Dorm Life although I won't be living in a dorm my uncle will provide a residence. the dorms aren't bad; however until I gain some labor work or a job the expenses alone will diminish money as is. I will make an honest effort when working on assignments with other people.
Food and Dining I don't know the rules of this cafeteria; however, i will treat it with the up most respect. The food would probably be better in person. the whole cafeteria will look just as fantastic as the dean her/himself.
What to do for fun My fun deals in watching all genre movies including movies from the 20's until now. i like to collect early Americana such as coke memorabilia, coins, film, etc. all coming down to having a good conversation with a person face to face.
Clubs and Activities During high school the clubs I hung around with where quiz bowel, anime, and swimming. They've all had a lasting impact on my life; it's like I've been with them so long that it would be hard to let go. along the way I've made friends in the clubs each come & gone soon it's my turn.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I came to this university as a mid-year freshman transfer and have been very happy here compared to my previous school Cal State Northridge. The professors are very competent and well-qualified and I have so far been satisfied with my education, but I would prefer a little bit more prestige upon graduation. I have a lot of fun here and the amount of students here is comparable to a UC, although the on campus life is fairly limited due to barely any on campus housing and the school's identity as a commuter school.
Tips for prospective students This university probably has the best bang for your buck more than any other college in the Los Angeles area. I would recommend trying to live on campus your first year as you will meet far more people than if you commuted or lived off campus. If you are a transfer and can't live on campus I would recommend checking out Greek life if meeting people is a priority.
Academic Rigor The difficulty of classes depends on your major. I am a physics major so my classes are definitely on the more difficult side. I can't comment on other majors' classes. GE classes are all very easy B's and fairly easy A's in my opinion.
Dorm Life The layout of some of the dorms is not cohesive for socializing and meeting a lot of people compared to UC dorms. However the dorms are still fun and partying will be easy.
Food and Dining Average to good food at the dining hall. They have a good rotation of menu items. The biggest downside is the dining hall's odd hours. There is no late night and the dining hall closes at 2 periods throughout the day. I would rate UCLA's food at 5 stars as a control.
What to do for fun Join clubs and be open to meeting new people. Many students live close to campus and partying isn't that difficult. I would check out the Greek scene and to look at all of the different houses. I pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon and met a lot of great people.
Bang for the buck Great bang for your buck. Although tuition is rising, that seems to be the case throughout California anyway. I feel as though I have excellent professors and am learning just as much, if not more than some of my friends and other universities, including UC's. Cal State Long Beach is also one of the most prestigious of the Cal States.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Walter Pyramid, our basketball arena is pretty cool. The weather is great too.
Great for these types of students Those looking for a mid-level UC type of education but can't afford or don't want to spend the money for a UC.
Clubs and Activities There are a plethora of clubs available and a lot of participation. I would highly recommend checking them out.
Greek Life Greek life is strong although we lack a Frat row so the houses aren't as nice as other campus'.
Campus Safety I have never felt unsafe on campus and I have quite a few evening/night classes. They have an escort service that takes you to your car if you want at night too. Girls mostly use this but sometimes I like to take it if I'm too lazy to walk back to my car.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences cal state long beach is a school with a wonderful atmosphere. it is conducive to excellent learning while offering other opportunities as well. the liberal studies program is fantastic.
Tips for prospective students be prepared to be independent if you never have before. the school treats you as an adult and therefore you choose when your parents are included in things related to your college education. pick your roommate!
Academic Rigor i have had some challenging classes, but most have been manageable and fun to work at.
Dorm Life while i do not have the best roommate ever, i have seen and hung out with many people who are thrilled with their living situation and i plan to be among them next semester!
Food and Dining the atmosphere of the dining hall is great, but the food itself could often use some work. they do very well with the time and budget allotted them, i'm sure.
What to do for fun i usually go out to the movies or frat parties with my friends. otherwise, i like staying in my dorm and watching movies or reading a good book!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus some people like to roll down a hill by the usu that is famously known as 4.0 hill. the legend is that if you roll down it, you will get a 4.0 throughout college.
Clubs and Activities making clubs is so easy that there is always one for you to fit into. i have joined the unicef club and the afe. anything that you are really passionate about can be a club if you get some close friends and have it approved, which is really nice when people don't know how to make friends in a new place.
Campus Safety there are escorts after about 5 pm to take you where you need to go, whether it be on foot, by golf cart, or in a car. also, the campus police are available 24/7 along with emergency buttons all over campus.

What to do for fun there are many clubs to choose from and many places to go to for entertainment. people can still live a city life.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the campus is huge with a diverse student population. some of the classes are tough, but once you get to classes in your major you'll start having the real fun.
Tips for prospective students get to campus early before classes because parking and the trek up to your classes can take a while. make sure you go to class, because the majority of your teachers will take attendance and it will counts towards your grade. if you plan ahead of time, there is absolutely no reason that you won't be able to get the classes you need. if you have time, try to get involved in a club or another activity on campus because it's a great way to meet people and it tends to make the college experience more enjoyable, especially on a commuter campus like long beach.
Academic Rigor the upper-division classes get pretty tough, especially if you don't keep up with the reading and tend to procrastinate. the ge classes are really easy but they're useful because they expand your knowledge of subjects you might not explore otherwise.
Dorm Life i've never lived in the dorms so i can't give a personal opinion, but i've never heard anything bad about them.
Food and Dining we have two food courts, so there's a wide variety of places to eat on campus. there's also a few shopping areas in walking distance from campus that provide even more food options, or we have mini convenience stores and vending machines all over for when you just want a snack.
What to do for fun the student union has a small bowling alley, pool tables, an actual swimming pool, and a small movie theater. you can join a club, take a recreation class like surfing or sailing, or go to the rec center to exercise. there's also a lot of open space, and students like to play frisbee on the upper campus quad.
Bang for the buck it has all the amenities of a larger university, without the cost. if you plan carefully, you can still get all of the classes you need, and the tuition covers all of the bonuses like your rec center membership and the shuttle and escort services.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the japanese garden is really pretty; it's a great place to sit and think or draw if you're an art major.
Great for these types of students it's great for everyone. because it's a commuter school, there are people from all over california; there are also a ton of people from out-of-state and foreign exchange students.
Clubs and Activities there are tons of clubs and activities that you can join. they hold big recruiting events towards the beginning of each semester, but you can join whenever you want.
Greek Life i have very little personal experience with this one, but a few of my friends are in fraternities and sororities and they love the bonding and the activities that they get to do.
Campus Safety for the most part, the campus is really safe. occasionally there are reports of theft, especially in places like the art studios where people tend to leave their possessions unattended. anyone can call the campus police and get an escort at night; they'll literally drive you right up to your car, even if you're parked in one of the neighborhoods around campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences csulb is a really great campus and offers a variety of majors for students to choose from. the atmosphere is great and the professors are very nice. i am very glad i chose to come to this college to earn my bachelor's degree.
Tips for prospective students attend every session of courses you have and start expanding your experience through the various clubs they offer on campus. form study groups as they will help you along the way.
Academic Rigor csulb is just like any other college; it is hard. make sure you study very hard and be on top of your work. also make sure to have fun along the way.
Dorm Life it really depends on where you dorm. dorm life can be crazy or peaceful depending on which dorm you choose to live in. i don't dorm; i commute. however, i've heard only positive things from the dorm life on this campus.
Food and Dining for the dorm residences, i heard the food is okay. they have on-campus restaurants such as subway, el pollo loco, and other places within reach.
What to do for fun don't forget to join a club or do anything else that gets you involved in the school's activities. when you are bored of studying, try studying with friends. go to the recreational center and workout for a new, hot body. if you are going to dorm, hang out with your dorm mates.
Bang for the buck the tuition cost at csulb isn't much compared to a lot of other 4 year universities in california, but it is still costly if you don't receive much from financial aid. tuition is always rising, but it's the same for all campuses. overall, this school is very affordable or it will leave you in a small debt.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is this hill that is considered the 4.0 gpa hill or whatnot. the story goes that if you roll all the way down the hill then you will get a 4.0 in college. i never did it, but i found it interesting to hear.
Great for these types of students csulb is great for a big variety of students, but it is pretty much an island out of nowhere. so, for students who do not like big campuses and classrooms, then csulb may not be for you.
Clubs and Activities again, it really depends on which club you join. you may choose one for your major like the microbiology club or join an archery club for fun. there are also lots of fraternities and sororities to choose from if you are into meeting a lot of new people or you can join an anime club to get along with other nerdy people. csulb has a great variety and it's good to take a look on what they offer during club rushes.
Campus Safety i am currently a freshman in college and i already feel very safe here. although at night it may be very eerie to walk around by yourself, the overall atmosphere of this campus is positive.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor I can honestly say that Long Beach is a great academic school even if it isn't an Ivy League. Every class that I've been enrolled in this semester has not proved me otherwise.
Dorm Life I am rating this part four stars, as I am not staying in the dorms myself. However, I have heard that staying in the dorms at Long Beach is full of fun and excited.
Food and Dining The food and dining at Long Beach anywhere on campus is fantastic! My favorites are all within the Student Union of course. The seating is very nice and all the food wonderful. And the Student Union, is looking to expand the already comfortable atmosphere with more restaurants and relaxing/study places.

Tips for prospective students I know some prospective students want to have a lot of General Education classes freshmen year. Before you do that, make sure you are able to take all of them. Taking less classes and making good grades is better than taking a lot of classes and doing average. In the end No one is gonna know what classes you took freshmen year, only your GPA.
Academic Rigor It depends who your teacher is . Some teachers don't really care about your grades so it your responsibility to ask other people you know at the school such as friends or family members and see if they are good teachers. Also they are trying to change a lot of things for the next incoming freshman's of Fall 2012 which will make it more difficult to receive scholarships. As long as your grades in High School Are Good, Your Straight.
Dorm Life Dorm Life is Great! You meet so much people and it is very fun. If you enjoy meeting a lot of people and is very friendly and like making friends I say choose Parkside Commons. If you rather quality of the dorm and RLC Is the right dorm for you. Now with the Traditional dorms, I don't request choosing those because they need alot of work done to them. For example there is spiders and some buildings have old furnitures.
Food and Dining The food can be better. I rather eat out than eat on campus. If you eat alot like breakfast, lunch and dinner, get the Block Plan or 10 Week Plan trust me.
What to do for fun I meet new people! I do Freshmen actives that they have on campus. They also have movie nights and have activities outside of campus. I party also. If you like to party, don't get any friday classes!
Great for these types of students If your quiet and like to keep to yourself, they have quiet buildings
Clubs and Activities There is alot of Clubs and Activities! If I can join them all I would. The only thing that bothers me is that alot of clubs choose to have their meetings on the same day, at the same time. They have a club for everything. That is another great way to meet people.
Greek Life I'm rather disappointed in the Greek Life. I want to join an African American Greek , but they don't have a lot on campus . I understand there isn't that many African Americans on campus, but the numbers is increasing each year. And a lot of the Greeks are very expensive.
Campus Safety Its good, but can be better.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The faculty in the Marine Biology and Geography programs are all really great educators and mentors. I am constantly learning in the classroom, out in the field, and in the labs.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and conveniently located. There are plenty of services available that accommodate students who commute and those who live on campus.
Bang for the buck Our tuition includes a membership at the Student Wellness and Recreation Center and the education that I am receiving from my stellar faculty and staff members will be immeasurably helpful in my career.
Tips for prospective students Apply for as many scholarships as you can...as often as you can! The cost to attend a public university in California is constantly increasing and it can really put a strain on your ability to learn if you are working 20+ hours a week and trying to maintain good grades.
Great for these types of students Students who want to stay close to home, students who want to attend a university that puts the students first

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have good professors who are organized and for the most part keep to their schedule. The professors will offer their free time out of class to willing make sure that you are learning the course material correctly. Most professors are understanding to the fact that you are freshmen and are adjusting to college life and the work load that comes with it. Some courses may be challenging, but you still learn a lot out of it.
Am enjoying being here I personally really like being at Cal State Long Beach. For the most part, people are really friendly. At the beginning of the semester, people will come sit at your table at breakfast, lunch, or dinner and begin to have a conversation with you. It's really not that hard making friends here. I love my group of friends and living on campus is definitely a plus. My closest groups of friends live on campus and we are always in each others' rooms doing homework or just hanging out. The campus is really large, but it's also really pretty with lots of trees. There's a beach about ten minutes away with a bus that can take you there. If you're worried about transportation, the city buses are free for all Cal State students. The Rec Center(the gym) is amazing and there's tons of different machines to use and work out on. They even have a rock climbing wall. They offer different free exercise classes for students to take.
Bang for the buck The amount of money you spend for dorm and tuition is definitely worth it. The experiences you gain from attending Long Beach State makes it all worth while. The education you receive is worth the price of tuition. The memories you make and the friends you make definitely make it worth everything.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you look at the map before you enroll in your classes. The campus is large and you might get two classes right after the other that are no where close to one another. Some teachers are understanding, but others do get peeved when you come in late or if you leave class early. This is mostly a commuter school, so if you don't live anywhere close to the university be positive that you are okay by not going home for months at a time.
Great for these types of students If you like a laid back environment then Long Beach State would be great for you. If you like the beach, then it's definitely great for you seeing as the beach is ten minutes away. Also if you like nice warm weather for the most part then this university would be great for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are a variety of teachers here from the well-rumored scary Professors to the easy ones that you can take to just pass the class. Not only are you learning a lot from the Professors here, you are also learning a lot about yourself, of how well you study, to your attendance and note taking skills.
Am enjoying being here There are a great number of club activities, varieties of food and people that is presented here at this school. Club activities such as: religion, sports, martial arts, art, education, community service and the Student Union.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to check your schedules for classes that might be a little too far from one another. Never get classes thats on upper campus, towards the theatre and library building, to lower campus, around the dance and music building, with only 15 minutes in between. Be careful of the scooters and skaters, unless you are one of them, then just be careful. Make sure to look up classes you want ahead of time instead of your day-of registering. And, never ever try to come only an hour early, or even two sometimes three hours early, to class on the first week.
Great for these types of students Will be great for active minded and body students. A set of wide varieties in education, activities and community interest. It is good for students who are hoping to be VERY open minded and accepting of apparent different cultures, ethnicities, religions, opinions and sexuality.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Many of the teachers I have had on campus made a deep impact on me. I was fortunate enough to attend class and be lectured by some very intellectual people. Yet, I have heard some horror stories from other students where the teachers were :P. A friend I had in a remedial math class told me her professor never taught anything at all. He/she just gave crossword puzzles all the time! So be careful when picking out classes. Try to pick a class with a professor you have heard good things about so you can learn as much as possible :) I have learned so many things I never learned in high school so it's been an interesting ride so far.
Am enjoying being here I am! it's been the most life-changing experience I have ever been on! I have learned how to be responsible and independent, and I've gained several leadership qualities and a confidence that I never thought I could have before. In high school I never really took charge in anything because I wasn't confident in my abilities. But now I have already had two leadership positions in two clubs and I'm currently running for two more positions! I've also met a lot of interesting people and made some really cool friends. This campus is so diverse so at first I was kind of nervous since in my community, it was only Latinos living there. CSULB is easy to adjust to though so your anxieties will soon float away.
Bang for the buck Tuition costs keep rising but CSULB is still one of the cheapest schools out there. It annoys me that some classes keep getting cut but it's like that everywhere so might as well not pay an insane amount of money at some expensive private school and end up with a load of debt.
Tips for prospective students 1) If you're dorming, choose your roommate!!! Do not let the housing office pick a roommate for you. I let them pair me up with someone random and it was one of the worst times of my life. I know other people who have gone through the same thing so to be on the safe side, try to choose your roommate.
2) Talk to your professors! Ask for help when you need it.... this will help you get the grade you want.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, that is what school is for.
3) Try to research the kind of classes you will have to take before registration comes up. I have some friends who just took random classes and it ended up not helping them at all for their major. If you're undecided, then yes go ahead and take random classes so hopefully you can get a feel for what you want to do BUT if you know what you want to do in the future, then do your research so you can be able to graduate in four years.
Great for these types of students someone with an open-mind who loves change
and a warm yet fast paced environment (this is a huge campus!)
someone who wants to grow intellectually! :D and have a great time as well...

Am enjoying being here Students are sweet, the campus is gorgeous and has so many neat things to offer anyone, in any major!
Bang for the buck Even with the rise in tuition (thanks California!) it's still cheaper than private or UC's. I love how much I am already learning and I haven't even been in classes for a whole month yet!
Tips for prospective students Always park off campus, unless you have later classes. The bus system is free for us so you might as well use it!
Great for these types of students Music majors and theater majors! You will love it here, they dedicate so much time and money to you guys, also, dance.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot So far I have had nothing but good teachers. They were very kind and understanding. They also seemed not only book smart, but experienced in the world. So not only have I been educated on the curriculum, but also on life.
Am enjoying being here I love the atmosphere of the school. It's so relaxing and chill. I feel like I could trust people here more than in my high school. Just about everyone here is nice. I would even say that the school has become like a second home to me.
Bang for the buck It's a state school, so it will be a lot cheaper than a private school. I personally have to pay double because I came from another state, but even in that rate, it's cheaper than a private school. However, it feels like a new fee is added each year, so I'm not sure if it'll stay that way for long.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to look at the General Education requirements and what classes you need for your major. They're important for you to take in order to graduate. Definitely try to see if a class for your major can be considered for GE. Also, see if you have to apply for your degree. Like for film, you have to apply in the January of your second year.
Great for these types of students My friends constantly tell me that this is basically an art school for low-income students. I couldn't agree more. Art colleges tend to be pricey because they are private. However, for less than half the price, you can get an art degree. There are many great teachers here who have experience in their respective fields, so they know what they are talking about. However, there are many other degrees offered, so it's not just all about art.

Am enjoying being here This campus has students and teachers from all different backgrounds. But being a commuter, I sometimes feel I am not experiencing the full University life. For the most part, people here are friendly and interesting.
Bang for the buck The president is really trying his best to keep the cost to a minimum. He really cares about all students from different socioeconomic classes. So far I am satisfied meeting the cost. Just hope it does not raise again.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who don't know what to major in and are still exploring different areas, who love cultural diversity, and who are going into medical and engineering professions (I am speaking from a chemistry perspective. I don't know if there are other great programs. But I know for sure these programs are big on campus).

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Yes. Last year I was a freshman and the professors made each student feel comfortable without effort. They are so much into their craft of teaching their material that it makes the students want to learn even more.
Am enjoying being here The campus environment is great and there are many people around campus who are easy to communicate with if you need guidance anywhere. The professors also there to help even if they do not know you. I am also on the Track&Field team here at Long Beach and I enjoy the team and coaches as well. I am able to get a great education and enjoy the sport of my choice without being pulled back and forth and having to make decisions between education and sports. I love going here and it always encourages me to tell other people about the school.
Bang for the buck While there are numerous amounts of budget cuts everywhere, Long Beach is very affordable for me. You learn so much from the professors, you're going to school on a great campus, and you are guaranteed to meet great people. I am so happy i go here because it is totally worth all of my money.
Tips for prospective students Long Beach is a great university but first make sure the school of your choice fits who are you and what you want to do with your future, because the decisions you make now will most likely determine you future job or hopefully career.

Am enjoying being here The weather in Long Beach is great. The beaches are close by, and the food places on and near campus are amazing.
Bang for the buck One of the cheapest and largest schools.
Tips for prospective students Get well-acquainted with professors. Especially in such a huge campus with some classes of up to 300 students, you can blend in. Don't. Get to know people. Make yourself stand out or ask professors for help, and things will go more smoothly.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I just finished my first year at CSULB and took mostly GE classes. Half of what we did was review from high school, one quarter was busy work that did not help me learn anything new and the rest was new material. However classes I took that were specifically for my major, I learned a lot and had fun. Each course and teacher is different so for some classes I learned a lot but for others it was a struggle and I didn't get as much as I wanted and expected from them.
Am enjoying being here CSULB is a big school. My first semester was hard. Most people commute so finding my niche took time. Dorm and join greek life! When I did these two things second semester I was loving life!
Bang for the buck CSULB is a quarter or less the price of most universities in california and it offers so much. The prices did go up a bit this year but it is still a good deal for education :)
Tips for prospective students Check your teachers for each class you register for before you enroll on ratemyprofessor.com It is pretty accurate from what I have experienced. Avoid 8AM classes that way you will be less likely to skip class during the year. The rec center is nice and huge so use it lots! Have fun!
Great for these types of students CSULB is diverse, so I think everyone can fit in.

Am enjoying being here The Climate is nice, the people are nice (for the most part), the scenery is nice, its close to the beach, and the professors are great (for the most part). What is not to like?

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Csulb has an easier curriculum than some UC schools. however that statement does not decrease the value of your education. You will learn a lot of new things especially if you apply yourself and get to know others as well. The learning experience was wonderful, in the books and out. The professors also helped me alot, they enjoy when students come to their office hours and ask questions, so use them wisely.
Am enjoying being here Being at Csulb was a learning experience in itself. The people that attend aren't very social, but i lived on campus so i got to meet more people in the dorms than i would have just commuting back and forth. It was fun and i will say that living on campus had a lot to do with it. Also, the new Rec center is somewhere i liked to go in oreder to clear my head. It has a pool, Basketball courts, and a rock climbing wall. Sports events are also pretty fun probably because there is no football team. LB is a beautiful city, and its in the center of the Los Angeles area.
Bang for the buck This is definitely a school that is primarily cheaper than most and still has some kind of value for its graduates, unlike Csun. The value of Csulb is increasing but its due to state budget cuts, and even with those increases i would stay say that its worth every dollar.
Tips for prospective students To anyone that is looking into Csulb, take into consideration living on campus. Also, look into the programs that are available at Csulb. i.e EOP or any sports programs whether it be club, or an NCAA team. Get to know people as well. College is all about communication, reference and networking. Make sure you get ahead and strive for excellent grades, talk to your professors. They are there to help you, besides you pay their checks with your tuition. Lastly, make sure you tour the campus and see how you like the size and the look of things.
Great for these types of students Csulb is a great school for a degree that has value and with little strain on your parents or your wallets. Any student could fit into the Csulb atmosphere no matter the race, hobby or educational interest. There's something for everyone. The laid back environment is a plus in my opinion.

Am enjoying being here I truly am enjoying being here. It is a great campus full a great amount of diversity. I am from a small town and had expectations of what the city life would be like. It is not at all what I expected everyone is very nice, welcoming and there are so many activities and clubs to participate in. It is also a very beautiful campus. You will definitely enjoy coming here. :)
Bang for the buck I did struggle with finances but for a quality education at a lower price in comparison to other schools it is definitely worth it! :)
Tips for prospective students Make sure you find where your classes are before you have them, it a big campus. Make the best out of your time here, it is definitely a time to learn more about yourself and enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new things all while furthering your career. :)_
Great for these types of students Anyone really, there is so much diversity here! :)

Am enjoying being here I like the campus, very neighborhood friendly oriented, but I feel like everyone is in a rush sometimes and it just makes you feel kinda left out at times.
Bang for the buck Although you might have financial aid, not all costs might be covered but the school is great, even though you're paying more for less.
Tips for prospective students Check you class locations before you enroll in the class because it's a huge campus and it takes 15 minutes to get one side of the campus to the other!
Great for these types of students GET INVOLVE. If you feel lonely and unproductive, this is the best advice to follow.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Honestly, you will learn a lot from any school you go to, whether JC or cal state or a UC. It just has to be a good subject with a good teacher who can grab a hold on your attention and of course it's due in part of the student and how hard he/she tries to learn the subject. I am currently taking interesting classes I always wanted to take like Chinese or astronomy and I enjoy my classes very much. You just got to find that right class.
Am enjoying being here I admit that I had doubts about going to Csulb b/c it was a cal state and not a UC. I thought it was going to be like a Ross store compared to other name brand store. But I was proven wrong. The classes are simply enjoyable. Such a diversity of people and culture there that it makes the atmosphere so friendly and alive. It's a school far enough for me to be away from home and close enough so that I can go back and forth whenever I want to. In addition, Csulb has a new rec or recreational center that offers top-notch work out equipments so it really makes me enjoy the campus even more.
Bang for the buck In all retrospect, th tuition price and all of that is pretty low compared to everywhere else and you basically get the same education as you would at a UC. Save money, and get out faster. That's pretty good to me.
Tips for prospective students Don't procrastinate. Matter of fact, do homework in advance. Go to class every day you are suppose to and read. Try to make some new friends (won't be a problem) and join some clubs. Remember this important fact, don't lie to yourself. I lied to myself about wanting to be in the medical field so I chose Bio as my major and am taking classes for it. Explore your options and take a whole variety of classes so you could find out what you're passionate about.
Great for these types of students I heard Csulb's nursing program was alright? Haha. I really don't know much about it, but I do know that our engineering program is pretty good.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although I haven't been at CSULB very long (one semester in fact), the quality of my learning experience has been, for the most part, exceptional. Nothing about Long Beach's education is sub-par. True, the various learning styles of the professors may not meet certain students' desires, but Ratemyprofessor.com certainly helps those who want to know more about particular classes and who is teaching them. At Long Beach, I've been able to follow and understand the material covered in class, and my professors were always willing to help during their office hours. They wanted students to understand, thus taking time to clarify difficult topics and giving students an opportunity to voice their questions. The openness of the professors and the overall atmosphere at Long Beach has allowed me to succeed in my first semester at Long Beach.
Am enjoying being here Cal State Long Beach provides many benefits for students, continuing to expand with its new rec center, especially. Long Beach also has an Academic Advising Center and the Horn Center, where there are people always willing to help confused, lost freshmen. The campus is huge, and everyone is simply trying to pursue education as well as social interaction. At Long Beach, I've met several friendly people that I've come to be friends with. The open and sociable factor of Long Beach helped me to overcome any initial insecurities to become a more confident person who loves meeting new people. At times, I am tired and weary from a long day at school, but the facilities and friendly faces that Long Beach provides keeps me going.
Bang for the buck Long Beach definitely gives the financially weak student an opportunity to receive a prime education despite his or her circumstances. I am always grateful for its relatively cheap tuition and low costs compared to expensive universities. All in all, the first few years are for GE classes, which are the same anywhere. During these economically pressing times, Cal State Long Beach allows students to find a place where education and realistic costs meet.
Tips for prospective students Always be open to new situations and meeting new people. The person you sit next to in your math class may become a good friend and a helpful peer. Even having a relationship with your professor gives you an opening to having discussions and questions with him or her, and it definitely encourages you when you know the person that you will see just about every other day. Also, please know that how you pursue your education now will affect your future, and take it seriously. And definitely, definitely, take it one step at a time.
Great for these types of students Students who may not have financial and academic excellence, but seek a considerable education with low costs. This is your chance.
