Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students On-campus housing is really over-priced and the security is ridiculous. If you can, try to find roommates and get a place off campus. Chances are, it'll be cheaper and nicer.
Great for these types of students Anyone who wants a different type of college experience and to be emerged in other cultures and wants a hands on experience. Columbia is a great way to meet all kinds of people and network within the arts.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I learn from not only my professors but also the fellow students around me. The professors not only work for the school but also have careers in their fields within the city. They all encourage students to seek outside education and experience with their craft.
Am enjoying being here I love being apart of Columbia. It is a wonderful place where beginning artists all around the world come to learn and hone their craft. The location of the campus is wonderful.
Bang for the buck As for the education, you do really get the education you want for your money. The room and board is the only thing that is a bit expensive, but it is all understandable because of the campuses location being downtown. Those students who live on campus in the downtown loop are close to everything which makes it all worth it.
Tips for prospective students Definitely search for internships and other things to gain experience in your profession. This school wants you to get out there and make a name for yourself. Get out of your dorm room work hard and experience the city, the school, and just enjoy your time here. It is up to you if you want your name out there.
Great for these types of students This school is great for open minded individuals who love the arts and want to pursue a career in the art of your choosing. If you enjoy the fast life of the city and you enjoy the arts then this school is right for you!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Although the photography program seems a bit old school, they have great facilities, open, bright classrooms and teachers who seem willing to help us learn.
Will enjoy being here CCC is in a great location, they are a train ride away from the upper town shopping, two streets away from the lake and the museums, and having nothing blocking the beautiful lake views. The students are nice and friendly.
Bang for the buck For its facilities and housing, Columbia makes the mark! The tuition is fantastic, for 18,000 grand a year compared to my local art school at 31,000!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get some kind of Chicago guide [like Not For Tourists] to make sure that what you like is around the school. Also, get a bike---WITH A GOOD LOCK! Bike thieves abound in Chicago and the only way to stop is to register your bike with the police when you get there and then keep is locked up. CCC has bike racks outside each building. Also, brush up on your traffic signals--bikes are subject to the same rules and regulations as cars.
Great for these types of students Artistic and who don't mind a school without sports.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are challenging in a great way. The staff are more than willing to explain complicated concepts in many different ways until students tell them they understand.
Am enjoying being here I have hardly met anyone that I have not liked and could not see being friends with. I had no trouble making new friends within the first week. We hang out on an almost daily basis, and have not had a dull encounter yet. The staff are inviting, crazy in a good way, and passionate about their individual subject area. Whenever you run into one of them, he or she is happy to get to know you as you, not just as one of their students, but as a future colleague and friend. I am still getting used to calling them by their first name (which they all prefer) after calling all of my teachers in grade/high school by their Mr. and Mrs. titles.
Bang for the buck The school may seem expensive, but for the private setting and all the resources you have at your disposal, it is well worth it. Every upperclassman that I have talked to already has a job lined up before they graduate. Since the staff are not only educators, but also work in the career paths they preach about, they can use their connections to help their students get their own careers. With the economy the way it is, I would say that any school that practically guarantees employment immediately after graduation is well worth the price.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to make friends both in and outside of your major. Conferring with other students while doing homework and group study sessions are a great way to understand material and get homework done. Having these connections will not only help getting assignments done, but after you graduate these friends can help get you jobs in your field if you decide to go a more freelance route.
Also, make sure to take advantage of Student Instruction sessions. In these, students who took the class previously go over the same material from a student perspective. Even if you understand everything the teacher said, it's still a great way to get a well-rounded understanding from the basics (and it forces you to study for the tests and quizzes).
Go to the Harold Washington Library near the University Center and CVS. In my opinion, its nine floors are far superior to the school's library. As an added bonus the massive amounts of research material, there are movies and CDs you can check out on the ground level, sheet music and practice rooms on the 8th floor, and a beautiful lounge on the top level if you take the escalator toward the back of the building. It's a great place to study and use the free wifi. Oh, and did I meantion that you can check out the movies and sheet music free of charge with a library card! Just make sure to return them on time.Great for these types of students If you have an artistic and open mind. You have to be able to accept every kind of people for who they are and not judge. You won't fit in otherwise. It's such an inviting and accepting atmosphere; I have never found a more accepting place. You have to be willing to do the work and be passionate about what you are studying.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At Columbia you are learning from teachers who are working professionals immersed in the fields that they are teaching. Classes are kept small and students immediately begin developing work.
Am enjoying being here I am surrounded by people who are passionate about the art that they are producing. Being in the city of Chicago provides many additional opportunities see shows and get involved in work that is happening outside of Columbia.
Bang for the buck Columbia may seem expensive but the cost is fairly reasonable when compared to other art schools.
Tips for prospective students On-campus housing is very expensive and not really worth it. No strong community is created in the dorms and I find that you will not really get to know that many more people that way.
Prospective students need to understand that while Columbia is an art school, classes still require a lot of time and energy. Students should not simply choose Columbia because they think that it is going to be easy.Great for these types of students Columbia is great for students who love to express themselves creatively and are passionate about their art form but do not necessarily need the strong academic component offered in the more traditional college experience.

Am enjoying being here The school is so fun, and creative that it is almost impossible not to make friends.
Bang for the buck Your first year you start off in classes in your major. Although it is expensive, you really do get what you pay for.
Tips for prospective students Work really hard. I know thats cliche but its for real.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot They offer a variety of classes which gives you plenty of opportunities to explore what you want to pursue. Being in the city also helps you apply what you learn to your everyday life. The teachers let you express what you want to but in the criteria they give you.
Am enjoying being here The dance program isn't for the aspiring commercial dancer or for the dancer that has a STRONG wanting to develop and become technically better. They let people whom have never danced come into the program, so being in the dance classes can get a little frustrating. Their dance program is modern based so if you're looking to go into a modern company this is for you. Though you meet a lot of new people and great friends that will support you and encourage you to be you. But most of the time you get people who aren't willing to get better. You kinda question yourself, if you're making the right decision, considering you get the people in class who don't put in enough effort (they slack)
Bang for the buck You're paying for the city/environment and the education. The teachers know what they're teaching and what you learn you helps you in the city. They buildings are nice and every month they have events for the students to participate in. The cafeteria can start to feel kinda of like a flashback into high school at the University Center, which can get annoying.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you can handle the big city if you've never lived in a major city before. Prepare for the cold weather! If you can get a scholarship, it will help, because the housing can get expensive and just overall the city can be a little pricey.
Great for these types of students This school is great for film, art, photography, fashion, and dancers looking to go into a modern company.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much during the past 3 years at Columbia. The hands on experience instructed by professors who work in your field of work is absolutely amazing. You will not find a better college for hands on learners,
Am enjoying being here Columbia is far from a dull college. There are always enjoyable events going on and the classes are full of excitement everyday including guest speakers, field trips, and unexpected ways of learning.
Bang for the buck Columbia is an extremely expensive school. But they do a great job of trying to help their students from work upon graduation. They do this by mandatory internships, counseling, etc. I have one more year until I graduate so I'm not sure if my investment has paid off yet. But I have high hopes that Columbia will take care of me!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are serious about the career you intend to pursue. At Columbia the courses are very major-oriented and are difficult to transfer to other major programs.
Great for these types of students Artsy, independent, hipster, urban, people who aren't traditional learners, fashionable, different, edgy

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've only been here for one semester and I have met many inspiring guest speakers including Lou Carlozo, a former Chicago Tribune writer turned- managing editor of WalletPop. Then there was Steve Franklin from the ethnic news media. Besides learning real world experiences from humorous and helpful teachers and speakers, I have learned to pursue my passion and make connections NOW. I walk out of every one of my classes feeling inspired and refreshed.
Am enjoying being here It's in the city of Chicago so what's not to love? There is always something happening and something to do. The other day I attended a college sponsored comedy show and another day, a free screening of a movie from the Invisible Children activist group. I have listened to writers of creative nonfiction speak and even took a picture of S.L Weisenberg, author of Cancer B****.
Bang for the buck The people you meet, the creative ideas you're exposed to, and the exciting city life and sights is worth every penny and drop of sweat.
Tips for prospective students Love the city and it will love you in return.
Great for these types of students Artists: journalist, photographers, graphic designers, fashionistas, film producers, dancers, actors.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Several of my friends who went here later complained that there was little to no teaching, rather you're doing it all yourself, in certain departments anyway. There's nothing wrong with learning on your own, of course.
Will enjoy being here Visiting the campus was amazing. It's a sprawling campus down town, need I say more? Many departments are in completely separate buildings on completely different blocks, and each place has its own sort of vibe to it. What's not to enjoy about the windy city, after all?
Bang for the buck Going back the will learn a lot, considering you may end up teaching yourself more than anything, is the cost of private school in Chicago worth a mere starting point in the career you want to choose? I s'pose it depends on the department you're interested in.
Tips for prospective students Getting in isn't hard. It's the staying in that's hard. CCC's drop out rate is pretty big, but as long as you're dedicated you can make it!
Know what you're into before going in. Being willing to stretch and grow as an artist is great and all, but if you're going into the liberal arts you at least need the bare bones of a game plan, even if you're willing to be flexible. The school is non-traditional so the chances of people laying out the perfect plan for you are slim to none.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I love the professor's here, they make sure in our required courses to tell us how the information we are learning in there will help us in the future. They are all very experienced in the area's in which they teach!
Am enjoying being here The city is great! There are many clubs and organizations to choose from to stay involved. This is Chicago, you'll find something to do!
Bang for the buck If you use all of the resources available to you (which you are paying for in your tuition) then your bang for the buck will be fabulous but if your like most of us students who don't realize everything that's out there, then you won't. It's really YOUR choice!
Tips for prospective students Have extra copies of EVERYTHING! i.e. shot records, tax papers…. literally everything, they tend to get lost in process a lot.
Great for these types of students If you are any of the following, out-going, talented, artsy, and/or opinionated, you will love this school because you will fit in GREAT!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are a lot of interesting classes that are created with artists in mind, and many of Columbia's departments just restructured their B.A. degrees in such a way that students now have more opportunities to take some of those classes as electives.
Am enjoying being here The lack of social activities planned with suburban commuter students in mind has left me (90 minutes one way) feeling that something is missing from my college experience, but my classes, instructors, and fellow students have all made most of the time I do spend on campus enjoyable and entertaining.
Tips for prospective students Take charge. Columbia's administration has cracks that it can be simple to get lost in, so you have to make sure that they don't forget about you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At my school, Columbia College Chicago, you have to put a lot of effort into your work in order to grow and be challenged. If you wanted, you could breeze by and pass your classes without really learning, while still spending a good amount of money.
Am enjoying being here Columbia is a great school for my intended major. They offer a lot of audition opportunities for shows, and Chicago, in general, is just a great place for the arts.
Bang for the buck I have been in two shows here, so far, and they have really helped me to grow, and I've loved them. The only problem is, academically, they school could be much more challenging. The school defiantly has its pros and cons. You can get the bang for you buck, if you are sure to help put in that bang.
Tips for prospective students Columbia has great benefits, and offers great opportunities performance wise. When you come here though, you get out of it what you put in. A private institution is not cheap, so take full advantages of the resources they offer. Push to be challenged!
Great for these types of students Those looking for a career in the arts should be sure to check out the school. You are surrounded by people who love what you love, and your in a great city.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia College is a creative and very interactive kind of school. It has allowed me to discover my creativity and what I am really passionate about. The teachers and students really made a great impact on me.
Tips for prospective students You should be very open-minded about the school and your classmates. Columbia College is not about just creativity but also diversity.
Academic Rigor Most of the class work assigned are about discovering your inner creativity and what you are capable of doing. The teachers here are very unique and have different but fun ways to learn. Although on the other hand, in some of my classes I feel as if we are not learning anything, because of some assignments and lectures taught in the class has nothing to do with the course. However, I rate this school pretty good because I have learned so much about what I love to do and what I do not love to do just in a year.
Dorm Life Each dorm at Columbia has its own personality to it. I have only lived in the one of their oldest dorm buildings. As I did not like the decor or the cleanliness of the apartment, I did enjoy the company of my fellow classmates, as well as my building not being so strict as other dorm buildings. I would recommend living in the dorms your first or second year of college because its a great way of meeting new friends and getting to know your fellow classmates.
Food and Dining I have never had a meal plan before, but I have tried the cafeteria food and it's actually really good. Some stuff may be potentially considered cafeteria food, meaning not great quality, but the Columbia dining is actually legit and is very clean.
What to do for fun Columbia hosts many fun events where you have the ability to meet new people and potentially become interested in joining certain clubs as well. Other than that, Columbia is located in the heart of Chicago, therefore there are many venues, diners, and spots to check out.
Clubs and Activities There is a convocation that Columbia holds at the very first week before school that helps to illustrate the different clubs and activities you can join during the school years. This event is usually filled with newcomers, but old students are more than welcome to join this event. It's free and comes with free prizes and food.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The first year things started off a little slow. All of the classes were very simple, but as sophomore year started, I noticed everything gradually becoming more of a challenge. Through those challenges I have learned a lot.
Am enjoying being here Columbia is definitely a fun school. There are many activities that give students opportunities to work with one another. It does get a little cheesy at times, but you learn to love it. Besides, this is a great city! Chicago has cool people, food, and sites to see.
Bang for the buck I do feel like the school is a too expensive. Rising tuition is ridiculous. People get out of college and are already down $30,000 or more. It is difficult to come back from that. While I like the school a lot and I am learning every day, it is very expensive.
Tips for prospective students Use Rate My Professor! Seriously, it can make a huge difference in your class decisions.
Great for these types of students Open minded and thought wielding students.

Tips for prospective students This school is so current and so in tune to their students, I don't know who wouldn't want to go here! If you are even considering this school you should visit the campus because that will make you want to go for sure.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every class that I have taken so far has been really helpful. Most of the material can be used later in your chosen career path. Teachers are doing what they are teaching, so It makes them stand out among other college professors. The professors are passionate about what they are teaching, so it makes you excited to learn.
Am enjoying being here People around are all VERY nice. Everyone will talk to each other no matter what you're studying. Everyone is always willing to help out and there is always a fun event to attend.
Bang for the buck Even though the cost to attend is jaw-dropping, you really get what you pay for. Your experience at Columbia will definitely be one that you won't forget. You get so much on campus such as opportunities and the portfolio studio.
Tips for prospective students Do not focus on the money so much. Take advantage of everything Columbia has to offer. You will miss out if you don't!

Will enjoy being here I love Chicago, so since the campus is right in the city I expect I will have a great time while there. Also the people that I met at the school were really friendly so making friends shouldn't be a problem.

Am enjoying being here I love this school! There are so many great aspects such as the professors, the other students, the facilities, and the beautiful city of Chicago. It is so great to be immersed in a big-city culture and constantly be surrounded by the arts.
Bang for the buck I will admit that, while amazing, Columbia is rather expensive. In my opinion, the wonderful experience I am having is worth the high tuition. It's all about where to find the money.
Tips for prospective students The biggest obstacle is the price so look anywhere you can to save money and apply for as much financial aid and as many scholarships as you can.

Am enjoying being here The school is right in the heart of the South Loop, perfect for anyone who loves to live in the city!
Bang for the buck It's a little bit expensive, but most colleges are these days and you are paying for an invaluable experience.
Tips for prospective students Live what you love! If you are passionate about what you want to do with your life and Columbia offers a program that suits you definitely check it out! On-campus housing is very expensive, so I would suggest trying to find a place off campus with some friends, use the Columbia facebook app to find people you are compatible with!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning a lot about my darkroom work, but my current teachers could care less about the material I am shooting. I'm working for a photo major, and they only care about print quality, while restricting everything else that I do. You will be schooled into shooting with one camera, one lens, one type of film, one type of paper. They put me in a lower class simply because I didn't have much darkroom experience, but I know my shooting quality is good.
Am enjoying being here I feel very trapped. There isn't much of the advertised social network in on campus, let alone anything to do in the area. For someone new to Chicago, this area is worthless.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You may be learning a lot, but it might not be challenging. It depends on the field, but if you are a classically trained musician, you won't find this modern school to challenge you, at least not in the first semester. 20 grand down the tube right there.
Am enjoying being here Chicago is amazing and the school has a lot to offer. They are all about connections. But one thing to be aware of is that you may have connections, but if the quality of your training and skills are not being challenged, then is it worth shelling out your money?
Bang for the buck It feels like high school at times. Because they have a generous admissions policy, you will have students in your classroom who did not push themselves in high school and expect the hard work fairy to get them to succeed at college. Therefore, at times the teacher will teach at the level of the weakest student. Not to mention that scholarships are very scarce since they only have 60 scholarships total for a student base of 12,500 students. Think twice about giving your money to this college.
Tips for prospective students If you come here, you are going to have to challenge yourself since the challenge won't come from the classrooms. Don't take honors writing and rhetoric 1 unless you want a crap full of political opinions from the teacher and no real writing learning involved. First year seminar is a joke and should not be considered anything close to a college class.
Great for these types of students People who don't care about academics and just want conncetions. You'll get connections here, but don't expect your butt will get kicked too hard the first semester. If you want to shell out money for easy classes, go ahead.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I rate Columbia College 5 out of 5 stars because the whole staff has been very helpful to students with their careers they're planning to pursue. Columbia even has free tutoring for its students who attend there. The students and faculty are very friendly!
Bang for the buck The tuition is a bit high but I think it is worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school is located in downtown. It is close to Chicago's most popular landmarks.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who love art.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities you could join to participate there.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia College Chicago is very unique in the sense that the students and the faculty are so passionate and devoted to do what they love. The campus is right in the middle of Chicago, which presents many great opportunities with internships and alumni. If you truly want to find a college where you can live what you love, Columbia College is the place for you.
Tips for prospective students - If commuting, be aware that you may have to miss out on somethings because of the time of day & also make friends with people in the dorms
- Check how your credits transfer ahead of time
- Use your absences wisely
- It is the SEARS Tower not the Willis TowerAcademic Rigor For me, the general studies classes were not too difficult, but the real pressure comes from the classes in your major.
Dorm Life I commute; I would not know how it is living there. However, I have stayed some nights with friends, and the dorms and appartments are beautiful.
Food and Dining There are a lot of small restaurants and diners around campus, as well as chain stores. Again, it is in the middle of Chicago so there is always something to try!
What to do for fun There are many sights: The Sears Tower, Navy Pier, museums. There are also many theatres downtown, there are beaches along the lake. There is always something to do; all you have to do is walk out the door.
Bang for the buck Tuition is rising, and many of us are not happy about it. However, compared to other colleges, it is not too bad. Then again, it is still quite pricey. Try to apply for as many scholarships as you can.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Manifest. It is a big senior showcase, basically an art feastival, at the end of the year. There is food, music, and some interesting performances.
Great for these types of students - Passionate
- Dedicated
- Artistic
-CreativeGreek Life There are no sororities or fraternities at Columbia College.
Campus Safety The security is great. The only incidents that occur are when people do not pay attention and something happens as a result. They do offer self defense classes through their fitness center as well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia College is all about being YOU. Columbia College allows you to enter and expand your creative mind in ways that you wouldn't expect to be possible. Columbia College challenges you to not only branch off of your creative spirit, but allow you to mold and shape that creative spirit into something useful for the real world.
Tips for prospective students Be outgoing. All the students are friendly and open to new connections with people. It allows you to have a strong network of creative individuals later in life that can help you in your future careers.
Academic Rigor The academics at Columbia are challenging. They push you to be your best and work your hardest. Although they are challenging, they prepare you for what your creative career will entail in the future so you are fully capable when you leave school and have to find a job.
Dorm Life The dorm life is great. All the students are friendly and excited to share their creative talents with everyone on their floors. The students are outgoing and always looking to make friends in their buildings.
Food and Dining There is one cafeteria which prepares a new meal selection every day. It is all fresh and provides many healthy choices such as salads and deli bars.
What to do for fun Being in the city of Chicago, there is plenty to do. There are always concert events, poetry and fiction readings and even intramural sports teams. The school itself as many activities for the students to participate in, such as Little Mouth, which is a open mic that the school puts together every other week for all the students to come together and show off their craft. There are dance and other artistic events such as theatrical performances and guest speakers as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At the end of every school year, Columbia puts together a festival called Manifest. At Manifest, all the seniors show off their craft to the entire city of Chicago. The festival takes place all over the city and all people are welcome to come visit. It celebrates art in all forms and demonstrates the creative energy around our entire campus.
Greek Life There is no greek life on campus.
Campus Safety All the dorms are armed with several security guards and take the security of the buildings very seriously. All students have to swipe a card to get into the building and all guests, even those who attend the school but don't live in that certain building, must show their state ids to a security guard and receive a day pass that allows them into the dorm and all guests must stay with their friend at all times. All the doors in the building lock once the door closes. This allows all the students in the building to feel safe and secured and not worry about leaving precious items behind in their rooms.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia is a great school if you are looking for an a-typical college experience in a large city away from campus life. Chicago is literally at your doorsteps complete with all of the adventures and opportunities it holds. The school itself I found beneficial to my learning experience with the teachers being actual members of the art society and able to teach the students first-hand information that will be useful in our careers.
Tips for prospective students You are entering a college atmosphere in a big city. It is easy to lose yourself amongst the lights and noise of the city, but if you surround yourself with trusted individuals you can make an amazing time of it. You have the opportunity here to explore and decide who you want to be and what your overall goals in life are. Breathe. Then dive straight in.
Academic Rigor Do not shirk your projects or grades, after all that is why you are here. If you put your energy into your work, you will be rewarded by the gratification of success. Always keep time for relaxing, though. A balanced schedule and time-management calendar is the most important tool you can have for success. Down-time is extremely important in keeping yourself grounded.
Dorm Life This is Chicago, but do not underestimate the importance of your dorm. That is where your friends will be, your belongings, and where you will spend the majority of your time. Do not take it for granted but embrace it while you live there, as by your Junior year, you will most likely have an apartment on your own. Dorms give you the chance to form close relationships that may last your entire life. Settle in and find your niche, and you will find the comfort of home.
Food and Dining Again, this is CHICAGO. There are always amazing restaurants to be found and explored. Take the L and the possibilities are endless.
What to do for fun Same as above. You can literally go anywhere in Chicago with your U-pass. On a down day, go to google, and search anything you feel like doing in Chicago. There are always museums as well, or parks, or concerts. You can do anything you like.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor Some classes are hard, some are easy. It depends on the teachers. Typically the courses for your own major are a bit demanding, but the general core classes are easier.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms, but I hear that most people don't like them. They're way overpriced. They're about $15,000 for two semesters, but the price stays the same even if you have roommates. It's better to find a roommate and rent an apartment.
Food and Dining I haven't eaten in the dining hall, so I don't know about that. Most of the buildings are near restaurants like Subway, Panera, and Jimmy Johns, and there are even more options if you're willing to walk a bit farther.
What to do for fun It's in the Chicago Loop, so you can go just about anywhere, especially with the Upass. Grant Park is really close by. There's the Art Institute which has a lot of free days. A lot of the buildings also have computers.
Bang for the buck It is what you make of it. If you're paying full tuition, living in the dorms, and buying all your books new, you're going to be paying way too much. But if you have a scholarship to lessen the price and find a lot of ways to save money, especially by living at home if your parents are nearby, or by getting an apartment with roommates, you'll be getting a decent deal.
Great for these types of students Very gay friendly. It's great for anyone who is creative and likes to be around other creative people.

Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to people in that school all are which very friendly. When in doubt ask questions about anything to me it was easy to maneuver around campus.
Academic Rigor Most classes aren't so hard, but do require time input.
Dorm Life Among the friendliest of the whole city.
What to do for fun Anything really even go around and explore more of the city of Chicago.
Bang for the buck Super luxurious dorms really worth the wait, but not so much on the money.
Campus Safety Never got into any trouble neither did I find myself in any danger.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia College Chicago is what you make of it. The teachers are just as passionate as the students are. There are always great opportunities for students to take advantage of.
Tips for prospective students Just because it is open admission doesn't make it easy and work-free so don't slack off. If something is going on on campus, go to it and get involved. Work together with other students to help each other out.
What to do for fun Columbia is downtown so there is ALWAYS something to do. Columbia also always has events going on in dorms, buildings, and off campus. Check out other neighborhoods besides south loop.
Bang for the buck You have to do work to get work
Great for these types of students Columbia is great for creative people, but not lazy people
Greek Life No greek life

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Located in the heart of Chicago with lake and city views in most classes gives artists the needed inspiration to be successful day in and day out throughout their artistic academic careers.
Tips for prospective students Best tip would be to not work full-time. Find every avenue you can to pay for your education outside of working while studying. It is by far one of the hardest things you can do at an artistic school. Focus on academics and building a niche which you can use once you graduate and actually start working full time.
Academic Rigor Academically very challenging. No different than any other college. Its up to the student to determine how rigorous they would be in regards to their education.
Dorm Life I live off campus.
Food and Dining Unlimited variety, from different ethnic restaurants depending what neighborhood you are in to the finest rated restaurants in the world.
What to do for fun Everything! But do not just spend time in the city, explore... Chicago has a large network of neighborhoods with so many different cultures and attractions.
Bang for the buck I think all colleges are overly expensive...

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia's diversity always makes for an exciting learning environment. The students want to be here and the professors long help achieve your dreams. The urbanness of the city leaks into your mind and heart.
Tips for prospective students If you have a goal that you want to achieve I would come here. Professors and peers give great opportunities to help achieve what you are looking to do. The urban setting has plenty to offer in and out of school.
Dorm Life You get to know your neighbors instantly because they will probably become your closest friends. Everyone wants to get to know each other and explore the urban city together.
Food and Dining I've never eaten anything made by the dorms except self serve ice cream. But, I guess that is the beauty of the city. You can eat wherever and whatever you want.
What to do for fun It's CHICAGO! There is theater, parks, beaches, clubs, and great areas to explore. You never have to be bored here.
Bang for the buck Like any arts college it's expensive. But, the professors live in their area of work. They know what they are teaching and how to teach it. It's a great way to really see first hand how life goes in your field.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I've been at Columbia for two years. My first year I lived on campus and practically lived off Pauly's Pizza. Now I'm off the pink line and I can't live without getting horchatta. My friends and I love Belmont/ Boys Town because of the hookah and great hole in the wall cafes. There is always something fun and new to find.
Great for these types of students Columbia is hipster central. If you aren't a hipster before you get here you'll defiantly pick up something attending here. The students want to be here. They are coming here to be the best in their field of study they can be. We are sweet, competitive, driven people.
Greek Life There is none. We don't have a mascot, sport team, or assigned colours.
Campus Safety Great secruity. I never feel unsafe while on campus. The security guards are friendly and willing to help.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I have only been at Columbia College for a semester so far but I absolutely love it thus far. The resources available to students seem almost unlimited. The teacher and staff really know what they are doing as well.
Tips for prospective students Go in with the understanding that Columbia is an open admissions school. It seems as though a lot of the students are there for the wrong reasons. Focus on your work and by the time in your in your junior and senior years, you'll be surrounded by the serious students who will be your competition and who will also help you grow within your field.
Academic Rigor The work load given to me thus far has been hefty, but all of if is super interesting and applies completely to my major. I'm learning a lot about my major and feel with each assignment and project I am getting closer to starting my career.
Dorm Life I cannot give a review on the dorm life at Columbia College because I have never lived in the dorms. I live off campus. From living off campus I can say that the school and dorms are conveniently located in the loop of Chicago.
Food and Dining The food venue options surrounding the campus are endless. There are a ton of different of places to grab lunch and most offer student discounts. The cafe located in the school has healthy options as well.
What to do for fun Campus is surrounded by different parks, museums and shopping centers. They are all within walking distances and can be nice when you have a break between classes.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia is a great school. It really is expensive, but if you want to fulfill all your dreams and goals you should attend Columbia. I really love it and it is in a wonderful city, Chicago!
Tips for prospective students Net working is really important. You should try your best to get your name out there as possible. Having Columbia on your resume looks really good. Stay on top of your game and always be prepared.
What to do for fun There is always something to do on and off campus. You live in this wonderful city so of course it will never be a dull moment.
Bang for the buck It is really expensive, and i wish they would help a little more with financial aid, but its really worth it in the end.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nothing is really unusual about this location.
Clubs and Activities It is always something going on at Columbia. If you attend this school you should always participate in everything.
Greek Life Unfortunately Columbia doesn't have a Greek life because its not toyur traditional university; its a private art school. I'm pretty sure you can pledge at the surround schools like Robert Morris or Depaul University if your really want to be into Greek life.
Campus Safety The campus is really safe, and I feel very comfortable. The security is always up to date on everything.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences columbia is a very open and diverse environment. everyone is friendly and welcoming with many selections to chose from and an open crowd of people. most professors provide beneficial critiques and help to improve your skills as an artist overall.
Tips for prospective students if you really want to succeed and become better, do your work to the best of your ability. although procrastination is expected, do not procrastinate to the very last extent. when you do work to your best ability, you get effective feedback and ways to improve, whether it's a little or major change. when teachers see the potential of you wanting to prosper, they push you in necessary ways to make sure you achieve just that.
Dorm Life i don't stay on campus. i commute. but i've been in many of the dorms and the vibes are nice. the environment is soothing and provides a none distracting zone to work.
Food and Dining because this school is location in the loop of downtown chicago, there are many food places around the city to dine at. another good benefit is that with a valid school id, many of these restaurants in the area of the school offer student discounts on food.
What to do for fun with the school being located in the downtown district, you're already provided with tourist attractions, landmarks, restaurants, stores, galleries, and other things to see all over the place. there isn't one place downtown that provides nothing to do. you even have theaters to go to and see plays, musicals, and concerts.
Clubs and Activities there are so many organizations to choose from for many categories, types, sports, and hobbies. there are organizations for beliefs and rights. you left with plenty of options.
Greek Life unfortunately this school doesn't have sororities and fraternities here. but if you did want to participate in the greek life, there are ways you can become by contacting the leaders of the chapter you wish to pledge to see what are necessary steps needed to pledge
Campus Safety the campus isn't too bad. there are occasionally robbery from train stops and such and most seem to occur close to night times or odd times of the night. so if you want to avoid such acts of crimes, it's best to not travel alone when it's dark or the streets are filled with little to no people. or do all your traveling earlier in the day.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences columbia college chicago is a great school for art students who want a four-year degree. some of their academic programs are stronger than others, but the programs and professors all prepare students for real-life tasks that they will encounter as artists.
Tips for prospective students make sure you research your program, not just the school. some of the programs are stronger than others, but not all of the programs state if they are accredited or not (which can become a problem later in life if you decide to go into certain fields). go into a program you love and are passionate about!
Academic Rigor general education classes are all over the place in the sense of hard-ness. some are very well put together and you learn a lot from them, while others are not as well thought out. all of the classes in any major i've been in/heard of are very good, just check out your professors online, some are much better than others.
Dorm Life the dorms here are all very nice but over priced for what you can get elsewhere in chicago. they're great for freshman and chicago first-timers but anyone else might want to consider living off campus. the security at the dorms tend to be unfriendly and the residence life staff is slow to respond to fix issues with payments and other problems.
Food and Dining there is no need to get a cafeteria meal plan through this college unless you get a dorm room without a kitchen (which most have kitchens). the meal plans are over-priced and the food is just adequate. chicago has some great restaurants that are reasonably priced (and on-campus restaurants are growing rapidly) and there are a bunch of grocery stores so meal plans are unnecessary.
What to do for fun if you're under 21, try to get involved with student activities as a freshman. make friends and go rollerblading in the summer or ice skating in the winter. over 21? chicago has great nightlife just a half hour from campus on the red line.
Bang for the buck the school is great for what you pay for it; many other art schools in il and in the chicagoland area are much more pricey. 3-stars because housing and meal plans are very over priced.
Great for these types of students this is a school that caters to mostly liberal students, although more conservative students do get catered to as well. the teachers are almost all very liberal and open minded and students and teachers alike are people on the edge of new ideas.
Greek Life columbia does not offer greek life, it is against the school's beliefs. a few schools in chicago allow columbia students to join in with their greek societies if they wish, but it's not something columbia offers.
Campus Safety during the day there are security personnel all over campus. every building has at least one security guard and there are security people on segways and in columbia marked security vehicles. after 6:00pm, students must show a columbia id to be allowed into the buildings. after 10pm, security around campus lessens it seems, everyone just has to remember to stay in groups.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences columbia college chicago is a very accepting school. the college enables students to further their studies using surrounding resources of greater downtown chicago. the college also encourages their students to live what they love.
Tips for prospective students really look into the school before applying. the acceptance rate is high, but the graduation rate is extremely low. get involved as much as possible. chicago is such a grand city it would be sad to miss out on the events that take place here. make sure you are confident in deciding your major before attending.
Academic Rigor they want their students to think critically. they strive for students to embrace their surroundings and use it as a tool for learning. academically, the classes are not too challenging, but are very thought provoking.
Dorm Life i was given the luxury of staying in the dwight lofts this year. they are absolutely gorgeous and very homey. the only downside is that they are extremely expensive.
Food and Dining even though i live in a dorm that provides a kitchen, i do have a meal plan as well. the food and dining hall has some nice meals here and there. they have a wide variety of things to choose from (salad bar, sandwiches, down to earth foods, sushi, etc.). it is always very clean and the workers are very kind too.
What to do for fun it's chicago! there are plenty of fun things to do, even through the school. there is the annual blood ball, which was extremely fun (through the school). the dorms are always posting fliers of new events going on in chicago throughout the week. plays and improv. shows are always a fun thing to go to on the weekends as well.
Bang for the buck it is a bang, but not for the buck. the tuition is very high and is still raising next year, which is unfortunate. the cost is probably the reason for such a low graduation rate.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i love columbia because it's a school that lets the students learn by getting involved in their intended major right away, freshmen year. i also love columbia because it's a very active place. there are literally 15+ events to attend on campus per day; that's extremely rare.
Tips for prospective students the best advice i can give is to get involved. join a student organization; go to campus events; meet people from different majors and cultures; take advantage of student resources, like the portfolio center; explore chicago with your u-pass. get involved! it's the only way to get the full columbia college chicago experience.
Academic Rigor the work is challenging; but since most of us who come here expect to be doing hands-on work consistently, our passion for art and media drives us to do it.
Dorm Life i've never lived on campus, but i know people who have and visited. columbia spoils us rotten! over 75% of the dorms are apartment style. this means the dorms have full kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms in each unit. yes, it's expensive, but prices relative to what you're going to receive.
Food and Dining there is one dorm with a cafeteria. the food is good. there's a large selection: deli, salad and soup bar, grill, pizza bar, comfort food section, packaged food, ice cream, etc. also, there are many franchise restaurants around: subway, dairy queen, panera bread, panda express. there are 5 major grocery stores within walking distance: jewel osco, trader joe's, target grocery, whole foods, and dominick's. plus, this is chicago! there's tons of places in different neighborhoods with a wide ethnic variety of foods.
What to do for fun there's honestly no reason to be bored if you're a columbia student. there are shows to attend weekly; by joining a student organization, you will be able to plan/produce events; and sometimes we'll get free tickets or vip to off-campus events.
Bang for the buck one thing that sets us apart from other art schools is that our freshmen can start to take classes in their major right away. most school make students wait until junior year to start taking classes for the major. however, columbia realizes that come junior year, we need to be doing internships and finding work outside of campus. we feel more confident by studying in our major for 4 years as opposed to only 2 years.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus one tradition that is unique to columbia is our annual end-of-the-year urban arts festival, manifest. this festival also serves as our senior showcase. it's help on the last day of school and is open to the public to walk in and experience all that our school has to offer. there's performances, food, contests, and even people on stilts!
Great for these types of students students who are passionate and serious about pursuing a career in the arts. students who are willing to network and build relationships with other students and professionals in order to build a quality portfolio. students who love to explore!
Clubs and Activities there are many different student organizations on campus, around 60. there's something for everyone. we have everything from multicultural orgs, major specific orgs, club sports, there's even a harry potter club!
Greek Life we do not have greek chapters at our school. there are city-wide chapters that some people get involved with.
Campus Safety the south loop (our campus neighborhood) is the number 1 safest district in the city of chicago. however, be smart! don't wave your michael kors watch in the air, while blasting your headphones down the street, at 2am, by yourself! anytime there are robberies, that's usually the description of the scene. we have campus security that patrols during school hours, and our dorm security is at the front desks 24/7, 365.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences an amazing school for the prospective artist, musician,, or writer of any type. if you have a passion for any form of expression, this school is for you. be forewarned though -- the majority of applicants are accepted, but those who are not dedicated won't stay.
Tips for prospective students get familiar with downtown chicago, the campus, and city life in general. be prepared to work hard and devote yourself to your studies. also get involved with your fellow students and communities -- columbia college wants you to learn from each other and feed each others inspiration. take advantage of all the talented creative people around you!
Academic Rigor this is the only school i've ever been to where i had papers and homework due in my choir class. although focused on art/creative disciplines, columbia college is very demanding. every class requires you to be fully engaged, tardiness/absence is not tolerated, and you're expected to do work far above and beyond what goes on inside of class. if you don't feel true passion for your chosen art form/studies, you will not have the drive to make it here.
Food and Dining most school buildings have cafes in them and lots of restaurants/fast food around campus. your campus is basically downtown chicago, your choices are vast. i can't comment on the dorm dining halls.
What to do for fun what isn't there to do, you're in chicago! the campus is downtown, so everything you could possibly want is there. don't expect football games or frat row, columbia college has none of that. you're also expected to attend performances/functions surrounding your studies, so get into the music/art/culture scene.
Bang for the buck expensive, full-time tuition is about $10,000 per semester, but not as bad as some schools. if you're truly into your chosen art form/passion, come here. everyone else will probably not find what they're looking for.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus everything here is about diversity/unconventionality/personal expression. you just have to experience it.
Great for these types of students artists/writers/musicians/actors/designers/any sort of creative person who is truly driven by a passion for their thang.
Clubs and Activities everything (except college sports).
Greek Life none.
Campus Safety it's downtown chicago. not in bad neighborhoods at all, but be aware of your surroundings and how to live in a city.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences it's a diverse, quirky and always interesting place to go to school. unfortunately, some programs lack focus and teachers can as well, which i suppose can make for a slightly exciting and unpredictable environment. i am very anxious to continue my education here because all of the professors i have had have been excellent thus far!
Tips for prospective students know that you will have to work hard, not just skate by on simply talent or your creativity.
What to do for fun ummmm it's chicago! and downtown, no less! go to films, plays, museums, shopping, bars, restaurants, anything and everything chicago offers!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia College is one of the most fast acting, progressive schools in America. Its ability to push students artistically and scholarly are unprecedented when compared to it's liberal arts school counterparts. Any student looking to network, expand and succeed all while still in college should seriously consider Columbia College.
Tips for prospective students I do recommend attending a community college to knock out your General Education classes. This way you can reap the benefits of attending Columbia College without graduating in mass amounts of debt.
Academic Rigor I give this area a three only because the general academics are known as a joke around campus and amongst other schools. Since Columbia is an liberal arts school, the emphasis isn't exactly on General Education Classes.
Dorm Life While the dorms are visually appealing with it's Post-Modern design; they are rather expensive. It's a great way for first year or transfer students to meet others outside their department or in general. Also, if you are a transfer student, such as myself, they provide dorms that require you to be 20 or older and floors specifically for students 21 or older. This allows older or more mature students to not live with or be treated like children.
Food and Dining Chicago is America's food capitol! Enjoy! ... Columbia's meal plan is overpriced.
What to do for fun It's Chicago! Just about every weekend there is a show, play, concert or festival involving art and the vast, diverse population of this city. Also, being a student at Columbia equals cheap transit passes and student discounts for so many events.
Bang for the buck Columbia is incredibly overpriced, but that's how most liberal arts schools are.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Manifest is an end-of-the-school-year tradition where any graduating senior gets the chance to present their work to the world. Columbia College takes over downtown Chicago and opens it's door to the public. This helps students show their work, network, and jump start their careers.
Great for these types of students Love art? no interest in the typical state college experience? Columbia will love you with open arms! Columbia will immediately immerse you on you major to help allow you to quickly decide if this is the place or major for you. The city itself, Chicago, will help you adjust to real world scenarios and make you a more confident person no matter where life decides to take you.
Clubs and Activities Columbia College takes great pride in it's support for student organized clubs as well as school funded activities. Nearly every department has some extracurricular groups to help bring students together and involved in the school and community.
Greek Life There are no Fraternities or Sororities at Columbia College.
Campus Safety While Columbia College makes a great effort to update it's students via email about updated security, helpful safety tips, and recent incidences; it is located in a metropolitan area. It's location downtown provides well lit streets, but it also includes a slew of homeless people.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia is what you make of it. It gives you all the tools to succeed and have fun, but you have to work to make these tools work for you.If you have passion, drive, and talent, then you will go far.
Tips for prospective students Know what you want to do, and have the ability to do what you want to do before you come to Columbia. It's not a place for you to waste your time (and money!) discovering what to do with your life.
Academic Rigor The classes for your major will be more of a challenge, but the general classes are not very difficult.
Dorm Life Don't live on campus. They will charge you too much, and you will have to follow their strange rules. Find a more affordable place with your friends, and live there.
Food and Dining Chicago has amazing food! You won't be disappointed.
What to do for fun You'll have the city at your fingertips. You'll be given a U-Pass at the beginning of the year, which allows you unlimited rides on public transportation. There is no excuse for you to get out and have fun. The possibilities are endless!
Bang for the buck It's up to you! If you have the work ethic and talent to succeed, than this school is definitely worth it. If you don't, than don't waste your money.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Columbia hosts so many events, it's crazy! You'll never be bored!
Great for these types of students This is a great school for people who find themselves out of the norm. Columbia is an incredibly friendly school to people of all cultures, races, and lifestyles. Also, if you're a hipster, you'll fit right in. ;)
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs, you'll have a hard time choosing which to go to! There's everything from Black Student Union to Muggles' Association. There is also a great club for the LGBTQA community, since Columbia is is one top twenty most gay friendly schools in the nation.
Greek Life Columbia has no Fraternities or Sororities. Sorry!
Campus Safety I haven't had to use Campus Safety yet, but I haven't heard anything negative about it.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Columbia is a very challenging and fulfilling school. The teachers make you think outside the box and encourage you. The environment is free and accepting.
Tips for prospective students Put your whole self into your art or your studies. Columbia is a competitive place and requires you to work hard.
Academic Rigor Academics are taught in a challenging but creative way. The classes I've experienced have been very fun and opened up my mind.
Dorm Life I've never lived in the dorms, but I've heard that the facilities are really nice.
Food and Dining I usually don't eat on campus, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby.
What to do for fun Check out the city! There's always so much going on for every kind of person.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot As an Honors/AP student I didn't find the coursework challenging. Even though I was taking courses within my major, I wasn't being pushed to do better.
Did enjoy being here Even though Columbia claims to be a liberal arts school, it's really an arts only school, which is fine, but if you're looking for an academically challenging environment, you won't find it here. I liked the creative environment, but the academics aren't worth the price.
Bang for the buck There are open art rooms, computer labs and rooms with art materials for the students, but the quality of the education isn't worth the price. Housing is also overpriced.
Tips for prospective students If you want to go to art school, this is the place for you. If you commute or want to be academically challenged, you won't be able to get involved or be pushed to think.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I attended an information session for the school and it seems as if you are open to any field you're interested in. You are basically learning exactly what is you will be doing when you pursue a career in your desired field.
Will enjoy being here It's in the heart of Chicago, surrounded by many other colleges and museums.
Bang for the buck Tuition is high but not so bad. There may be more traveling expenses if you live out of the city, but for an world renowned college, it should be worth it.
Great for these types of students From the information session, I learned that it's a school for overall creative types or people interested in arts and communication.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a Fiction Writing Major, but I am taking lots of different kinds of courses. That's one of the great things about Columbia, you can take pretty much whatever classes you want! Some have prerequisites, like you can't take Acting 3 when you are a first year Graphic Design Major, but there are plenty of classes that are for non-majors. There are really fun classes, too. You have to take a science lab, but it doesn't have to be painful.
Am enjoying being here I always knew that I wanted to live in a city, but where I am in the city is unbelievable! All of my classes are within a ten minute walk, I know of five different El stops within five minutes, and State Street is just beside me so I can do anything I want! I knew the school was a good fit for me, but living in the city is just perfect.
Bang for the buck It is a lot cheaper than other Private Art Schools, and was cheaper than some of the other schools I looked at, but you have to budget. Tuition is just over $20k, rooms go from $8k to $11k, plus the fees which are different depending on your major, and the meal plan is roughly $3k. You will be buying groceries whether or not you have the meal plan, it's just the way it happens. I don't have a meal plan and I am fine, but I know my roommates love having unlimited meals they can have without having to lift a finger.
Tips for prospective students Visit. Definitely visit. That's the only way you can really get a feel for any school and to be sure that it is right for you. And decide where you go based on if it makes you happy. Yes, let it have your major, be safety forward, and all of the other requirements, but go where you feel happy. Where you know you can spend the next four years of your life.
Great for these types of students Open minded students who love diversity and engage themselves in many activities. There are lots of things going on around campus, you have to want to get involved!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much compared to high school its amazing, and all my teachers and classes are interesting which is a plus.
Am enjoying being here I love columbia's location, right in the loop so it like living the dream early. Your own apartment right in the middle of what's happening.
Bang for the buck The only complaint i have about this school is price but considering how nice our rooms are and what you get I guess it balances out but they could still do better on the price no one is rich here!!
Tips for prospective students My tips I have is remember that this is an art school or offically liberal arts college as they call it. I have heard alot of people complain that we are not like regular schools with football games and parties everyday (even though your in the middle of downtown Chicago and you can just go to other college parties in the area so it really makes no difference!) and that we have no mascot or school colors but thats part of the deal and I like it. Now the idea of going to another regular school seems boring stuck in one little piece of grass called campus? not for me. The city is at your finger tips. Have fun. But also dont expect to goof off they are serious about your work so if your a slacker this school isn't for you. (Also have a little common sense also, I used to live in Arkansas but it doesnt take a dummy to have street smarts so be smart please and do not leave your drinks alone at bars!!!! Terrible!!!! Happened to girl across the hall so be on your toes in the street)
Great for these types of students Open-minded, creative, believe in something different, encouraging environment, and finding people weird as you are but in a good way. :)

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students columbia college is a great school. i'm a sophmore majoring in fashion design. i've had some really great teachers. teachers at columbia are ethusiastic and fun.
my tips for future students are to make sure you never procrastinate...ever! it doesn't work in college. always ask teachers questions and/or opinions.
if you are going to live off-campus, make sure commuting doesn't affect your class schedule. choose a class schedule that works for you but that makes you comfortable.
columbia has a lot of events from fashion to health to technology. make sure to check it out and it's a great way to learn something and to network, if neccessary!Great for these types of students this college is made for students who are passionate about their major...who are friendly and ethusiastic...who love color and expression!!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Columbia offers a wide range of knowledge with each major/minor! The professors are directly involved with what they teach and provide the knowledge and all around know-how needed to succeed with your major!
Will enjoy being here The campus is literately the entire South Loop of Chicago! There is always something to do and it's always exciting. Despite being a big city, everywhere you go the people are kind and courteous.
Bang for the buck At Columbia College Chicago you are getting the very best education has to offer, while cost of living is expensive realise it's in the city and the prices based on that are fairly low! My favorite part is still all the fun little things you get, such as free sketch book and the added personal detail they give to each individual student.
Tips for prospective students Ask questions and put yourself out there! The current students and faculty are there for you and really do put you first.
Great for these types of students This college is great for creative go-getter's!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot One thing to keep in mind while attending Columbia is that most of your professors are professionals and have another work life besides teaching. You're essentially learning from a professional! They will challenge you and push you, and if you're down for that that's good. You may also encounter a lot of help from your peers while you're working in the lab or on campus, take all the help and critique you can.
Am enjoying being here Columbia is definitely a big and different crowd. Unlike most colleges, Columbia's campus is downtown Chicago. Whether you're in the dorms or off campus, you'll benefit from making friends, and you'll make some good friends at that. There are many opportunities to get involved and many opportunities to talk to professionals who are booked to visit Columbia. Keep your eyes open, you never know who'll stop by.
Bang for the buck Facilities are definitely here for students to use during their free time and there is definitely a lot of help if you have questions or need help. They have print shops, screen printing facilities, wood working facilities. They also have shops that sell materials you may need. Don't forget to utilize the FREE scrap wood bin from the wood shop if you ever need any!
Tips for prospective students Keep Columbia in one of your options, and make the best of what you can while you attend here! Take all opportunities to network and get involved! Don't just call it a day after your classes, join an organization and you'll find going to college worth your time as you make friends effortlessly. Don't be afraid to travel outside your major to make friends... You'll surprise yourself with who you may meet and what they can offer you! Explore Chicago with friends and you'll find small treasures!
Great for these types of students Open-minded creatives who just want to get out of their small suburban town.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm a music major and I have nothing but praise and great words about the faculty in the music department. This is no doubt a great institution to get a great music education from. What probably makes Columbia so special compared to other schools is that the professors are all currently working in their respective fields in addition to their jobs as educators. So they really can bring all their professional experience to the table. I also feel I really have access to my professors - every professor I've had is GREAT at getting right back to me via email when I have any questions. The class sizes are pretty small (20 or less in most situations) which is also really nice. I have attended Columbia for one year, going back for my second year, and just with one year of classes there I have already seen my musical knowledge and inspiration sky rocket after just two semesters.
Am enjoying being here Living in downtown Chicago what is not to love? The campus is spread out downtown in various buildings. I find living in such a culturally exploding city like Chicago to be really artistically stimulating. Columbia is a place I have found real inspiration at. If you really enjoy doing art (in whatever specific craft/medium you possess) this school does their best to inspire and give you the room and freedom to express yourself in your own unique way. They advertise that - but I'm here to say I believe that is honestly true. They give you opportunities to express yourself creatively even within academic GE classes. Columbia is unique that way.
Bang for the buck It is an expensive private arts' college - that is probably the biggest issue most have while attending. Many of us (myself included) really can't afford it, but the school offers great opportunities for work and scholarships. Most people who stay after their first year are the folks who had a great experience who would say it's worth the money. So many people dropout during/after their first year due to economical/personal reasons. The creative people who stay and persevere - will all tell you this school is very much worth how much you have to pay for it. Even if it means a lot of debt - I feel I get to learn from the best and have great resources to use at Columbia.
Tips for prospective students Columbia is fairly unorganized - so dealing with documents will be difficult a lot of the time, but after you are in the system they are a lot better at dealing with you. I also advise avoiding the dorms if at all possible. They are all pretty nice - I lived at Dwight Lofts which was really nice. It is however, EXTREMELY expensive. I recommend looking into other living situations in the city and other student housing places.
Great for these types of students This school is great for anyone who is artistic and is truly inspired to create unique work. It is great for artists who want to learn from fantastic professionals in the field who bring that experience to the class room. Great for artists who want personal attention in small class sizes and great outside e-mail communication.
