    Am learning a lot

I can't believe how easy it's been to go back to school. Daytona State (currently at the Deltona Campus) has practically held my hand, and walked me through enrollment.

    Am enjoying being here

I just completed my first semester, and can't wait to see what the teachers come up with next.

    Bang for the buck

I think Daytona State is right along with other state colleges.

    Tips for prospective students

Great for these types of students

This school is great for anybody, and everybody. It has a special class, Fresh Start, for displaced home makers, that I encourage as a great place to start. They will help you figure out what you want to be when you grow up, and support you every step of the way.

I will use every bit of money I can wisely. Even though some of there things are expensive, I will do my best to get what I need for my classes.

    Am learning a lot

Writing about Daytona State College is more difficult than I had first anticipated when I sat down to write this short essay. There are so many great things about this school that cramming every single detail into a certain length just seems too difficult!
From the variety of campuses to choose from, to the small class sizes and variety of understanding professors available, Daytona State definitely helped me to put myself on the right track in life. Even while I took online courses, I felt as though I had a one-on-one experience with my professor(s). There was truly never a dull moment in my life while enrolled in this college.
When I had first enrolled in Daytona State in 2009, I felt a bit confused as to what major I should go into and what field of study I should focus on. The academic advisors as well as even my disability advisor and counselor helped me a lot with this. Eventually I settled into education and began volunteering and interning at Daytona Lakes Elementary. This was a very memorable experience and also one that helped me in my future as a teacher.
To conclude my essay, Daytona State offers a variety of benefits and programs for those who seek it out. The staff and employees that work there are only interested in getting you to where you have to be in order to better yourself and your future. They try their hardest to help you if you need it, and if they see that you are struggling, they will gladly give a helping hand. Though I have written my best about this college and all it has to offer, this is certain – one must get a inside look of the campus for him or herself in order to full experience and believe anything I have said!

    Am enjoying being here

From the friendly faculty and staff, to the nice students, it's so easy to feel welcome at Daytona State College. Whether you are a shy and withdrawn student or an outgoing one, you'll find that making a friend here is easy!

    Bang for the buck

The financial costs of attending classes here at Daytona State College are very inexpensive. This is one of top reasons I enjoy this school so much. It put myself and my family at great ease knowing that I'm paying so little as compared to other schools (such as a private college or university).

    Tips for prospective students

My best advice would be to visit Daytona State! In order to see just how cool and friendly this school is, you must be willing to see it for yourself.

Great for these types of students

Daytona State College is honestly best for any kind of student looking to further their education. Whether young or old, fresh out of high school or looking to re-apply and further their education - there is an equal opportunity for everyone to advance.

    Definitely getting a great education.

    Am enjoying being here

I take classes online and all of my online teachers have been great and extremely helpful both online and in person during office hours.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of school is not bad compared to other schools, and I feel like I am getting the education I deserve.

    Tips for prospective students

If you know people who have taken a class you need to take, talk to them about the teachers they had. This is the best way to find a teacher that works for you.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students of all kinds!

    Did learn a lot

I went to Daytona State College when I was still in high school. I was a Dual Enrollment student and I have to say for anyone debating do Dual Enrollment, do it here at Daytona State. The adviser was wonderful and helped answer any questions and all the professors were there to lend you a hand. Here you didn't feel lost in the crowd of students and you were really able to ask questions and get help from your professors one on one.

    Did enjoy being here

I enjoyed Daytona State. I took classes on the Debary campus, it was a smaller campus, it made walking around and exploring the campus easy. You didn't get lost in the herd of students, the scenery was nice, and the faculty were pretty helpful.

    Bang for the buck

Dual Enrollment was 100% free since I was a high school student getting college credits. It was wonderful getting a higher education due to being a academically smart and sound student.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are extremely well qualified in their area of expertise. If there is a chance that you are not comprehending the curriculum, there are tutors located in several areas around campus. They are really helpful, and most of the teachers are lenient and willing to help you if it is needed.

    Am enjoying being here

I love attending Daytona State College. The teachers are incredible, and I am really learning a lot.
The atmosphere is amazing as well. You truly feel like you are a college student!

    Bang for the buck

Daytona State College (DSC) was more recently made into a state college, as it was known as Daytona Beach Community College prior to DSC. You get the same education, and the same degree from this school as you would from any other, and you pay a lot less!

    Tips for prospective students

I highly recommend students use rate my professor. I've used it to help decide on which professors to take for the past two semesters, and each has top reviews. It can be important to a student to choose a professor who has similar teaching styles that fit with one's personal learning style.

Great for these types of students

This college is wonderful for a variety of students. Dual enrollment is a really good option for high school students. Usually one would begin dual enrollment in their Sophmore year of high school. If you pass the courses, they count as college credits and it's paid for! By the time you graduate from high school, you could have your A.A or A.S. degree!

For students who plan on transferring after completing their Associates' degree, it can help not only save money, but it provides an easier transition from the high school life, to college life; you are still local, but attending college regularly.

For those who just want to save a bit of money, and wish to get their 4-year degree in their field of choice, DSC is a fantastic place. The cost of tuition and other fees is easier on your wallet than regular state universities, or private schools, and you get the same education!

    Am learning a lot

Honestly, a lot of this is stuff I learned in high school. But there's a lot of expansion and classes you can take that are specific to one area of study. Those are the classes I learn the most in.

    Am enjoying being here

I love this school. The teacher's I've had up to now are good at what they do and really want to help their students learn. Fellow students are kind and the clubs and athletics they have here are really great!

    Bang for the buck

For me, this is a yes. I'm learning all that I need to fairly cheaply. It's worth the cost.

    Tips for prospective students

Make a GOOD schedule. Keep the classes you want compacted because, honestly, going back and forth from the campus to home is annoying and there's really not much to do on campus most days.

Great for these types of students

Ones who enjoy fairly simple courses, those who want to learn, those who are willing to work, and those who enjoy a calm, quiet campus

The atmosphere on campus has well kept landscaping, nice side walks, and plenty of people to get in your way. The faculty seem very well trained and very helpful. The college is also in a very good location and is easily accessed from major and minor highways.

    Tips for prospective students

I would definitely advise transferring to the UCF branch in Daytona as they have many more Bachelors Degrees available.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on the professor you choose, but most are very laid back and are very helpful.

    Dorm Life

    No dorms.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria on campus but I have never tried it.

    What to do for fun

DSC does offer a few sporting clubs such as tennis and soccer. DSC also has a fitness center and an indoor pool.

    Bang for the buck

As DSC is a very cheap college for pretty good instructors, I have found that I am definitely getting what I am paying for.

Daytona State is wonderful! With small class sizes with dedicated teachers who are devoted to educating you thoroughly, this is not your average two year community college. I truly wish they offered more four year programs.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a wide variety of classes, there are so much to choose from! They have an excellent psychology department as well as photography school.

    What to do for fun

They have numerous clubs, most of them are on the Daytona campus but there are still plenty on other campuses as well. Also, at the main campus in Daytona, there is a pool, a gym, etc.

    Bang for the buck

I am so blessed to have received the education I did from DSC for the tuition I paid. Averaging around 1500/semester for a full 12 hour course credit load, it's worth it!

Great for these types of students

Those interested in photography, psychology, nursing or cosmetology. Also, if you are just interested in getting your general education done economically in an awesome setting with small classes.

    Clubs and Activities

psychology club, catalyst club, ptk, campus crusaders for Christ

    Campus Safety

    Tips for prospective students

Academically, I recommend reading your syllabus thoroughly. Professors often break down the entire semester with a calender and give directions for future assignments. This is a great way to know what to expect, work ahead, and even stay on top of work if you miss a class. Don't be afraid to meet and talk with your professor outside of class. That is why they have office hours, and they will appreciate you for coming to them. Also, I was involved with many clubs and extracurricular activities, and I have always been welcomed with open arms. Student want to get together with students who share there interests. Also, I'd get a student calender from the school as soon as possible there is so much information in there I can not stress it enough.I was highly involved with the theatre, and DSC has a beautiful theater facility with three different stages, as well as two smaller theaters located on campus for anyone interested in the performing arts.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the professors I've had are very strict about deadlines, but the work load always seemed fair. I never received an assignment I felt impossible to accomplish unless due to my own procrastination. Again its all about the syllabus! Everything you need to know is there! Follow it and you will pass. You can even work ahead in many instances. BUT, be wary professors may make changes to the syllabus as they go, but they will let you know.

    Dorm Life

There aren't any dorms available at Daytona State for the time being. I believe building plans are in the works though.

    Food and Dining

The campus cafeteria isn't anything too exciting, but it is a fun space with ping pong tables. There is almost always someone playing. In the art museum in the front of campus there are meals served cooked by the culinary students. It is a little more pricey but it is definitely worth checking out. The food is so good and the building is beautiful. There are smaller cafe style spots around the campus which are great for grabbing a bite or some coffee quick between classes.

    What to do for fun

The campus actually has many big activities in the courtyard throughout the year. They are usually cited in your student calender. There's usually activities, prizes, music, and FREE FOOD. Chickfila is often there... yum. Also the museum in the front of campus is free to students and is always exhibiting new work from varying artists which should not be neglected. And if you would like to get a peak at upcoming artists, the photography building and fine art building exhibits current students' work in the hallways.Plus, never forget the beach is just a few miles away from campus and there are tons of public parks.

    Bang for the buck

I think the school is a little pricey. I've compared it to other state colleges and seems to run about a hundred dollars more per credit hour. Along with other things like the fact that the gym isn't included with tuition.

Great for these types of students

I think there is a bit of an artsy vibe at DSC. We have our photography museum and we are known for our photography program. Plus, the news journal center which is now a part of our campus has three beautiful stages as well as music and dance studios. DSC is also known for its outstanding choir. Plus, even the non-art majors seem to be artistic in their own ways. Perhaps it is the beach life?

    Clubs and Activities

There are a wide variety of clubs that are very active in fun. I believe they are listed in your student calender. New comers are always welcome so I would sit in on a meeting to see how you like anything you may be interested in.

    Greek Life

Not much of a greek life. I believe there is one that is based on grades and has a meeting area on campus, but no housing or anything like that.

    Campus Safety

I personally have always felt safe on campus, and I know this past year they have been taking measure to improve safety with instant electronic alerts to all students. There are many emergency safety phones located throughout the campus.

Daytona State College, the college famous for the world's most famous beach. The name alone sets the tone for this laid back school; from beach bums to shoe-bees this school is a melting pot for beach lovers everywhere. The open layout and landscape of palm trees give this school the perfect balance of brain and beach.

    Tips for prospective students

Words from the wise, as a current student I have a few pointers that could be helpful to any newbie. Number one, just because the beach is a hop, jump, and a skip away remember that it is school and studying comes first. However, there are no rules forbidding books on the beach. Number two, there are a lot of resources at this quaint college, take advantage of the free tutoring and the academic support centers. Private tutoring can be outrageous and is definitely not in a college budget. Lastly number three, have fun. Participate in school activities. You will only be there once, well, if it is done right the first time.

    Academic Rigor

Just because the breezy air smells of salt do not mean that academics will be like a day at the beach. Like any college, professors vary. Some are outrageously difficult and make it nearly impossible to pass while others are just as laid back as most of the students. If college was easy everyone would go. School is always going to be a challenge, no matter where you attend.

    Dorm Life

This quaint college, is just that, quaint; there is no room for dorm life. If you are coming here from out of state check bulletin boards for rooms for rent or bunk with a buddy. Luckily, rents around this area are pretty affordable so don't tweak over the thought of living outside of a dorm. To be honest, most rentals around the area are probably more affordable than Gainsvilles Greek Row.

    Food and Dining

What does the beach automatically make you think of? Burgers! No, but really there are a lot of great seafood places in the area. My favorite would have to be DJ's Deck, this joint has been around for years, plus they make a pretty good burger too.

    What to do for fun

Since the beach is right there, all the time, everyday beckoning your name as you stare out of a classroom window it really is not the only fun thing to do around the area. Daytona offers great art and craft shows, historical festivals, and even it very own water park! From kayaking, to fishing, to bike rides, and even just exploring there is always something to do. And of course, there always is the beach.

    Bang for the buck

I m a college student so of course I am all about saving money. These few tips are not specifically located to Daytona, but they are beneficial. Who doesn't want anew outfit the first day of school? Mall prices can be crazy so I have found that I can match celebrity looks by checking out Plato's closet or my favorite, rummaging through the racks of Goodwill. There is always a treasure to be found. My other tip would be grocery savings, just because you are in college does not mean that you must live off Ramen noodles. Try catching buy one get one free at Winn-Dixie. You can eat like a king and pay like a peasant.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

None that I know of personally, but I am sure if you search around there i probably one out there. then let me know so I can join in as well!

Great for these types of students

Savings is a great thing as a college student. Do not cut yourself short by eating junk or spending big bucks to fit in. Daytona is the beach bum capital, use this lazy vibe to your advantage.

    Clubs and Activities

The local joke around here is Dirtona but, this is only a joke. There are two main clubs in the area 509 and Razzles, neither of which are my cup of tea. However, if you are looking for a chill place to hang out the Ocean deck offers great music and is located right on the beach. The deck is an oldie but goodie. My newest hang out spot is Caffine, which is located a little North of Daytona in Ormond beach. It may look like a coffee shop from the front, but Thursday nights the hot tiki bar in the back is jumping with night life.

    Greek Life

Sorry, the most Greek life you will get around here is the Greek festival that takes places at the Greek Orthodox church every year.

    Campus Safety

The security on campus is great. There are security guards on campus 24/7. This is especially great in the winter when it gets dark at 6:00 and you are still in class. The guards can be called at their station and they will escort you to your car. It makes the idea of night classes bearable.

i am currently a sophomore at daytona state college, and my experience with professors thus far has been very good. the professors and staff that i have dealt with have always been helpful and friendly. there are some students there that don't seem to take the work there seriously, which has always been an annoyance to me, but the school itself is very good.

    Tips for prospective students

don't sign up for classes at the last minute. sign up for classes the first day you're able to so you can get the classes and professors that you want.

    Academic Rigor

i love the english department at daytona state. i took enc1101 last semester with jessica kester and although her assignments were very challenging, i learned a lot from that class and would definitely recommend her. i'm also taking holy hollins for speech right now and i'm learning a lot in her class about public speaking as well. the math department is okay but i don't like their strict rules about certain calculators not being allowed. the algebra work is very challenging and i feel like those rules are setting people who aren't very good at math for failure.

    Dorm Life

the only reason why i gave this one star is because there isn't any dorm life here.

    Food and Dining

the food here is very good! they sell starbucks coffee which is something pretty much every college needs. as someone who has loved pizza hut ever since i was a little kid, i was very thrilled to find out that they have a mini pizza hut in the cafeteria now. they also have a grill 150 degrees there which is very good, but the customer service there isn't so much. i once waited about five minutes in front of the line and nobody came out to ask what i wanted so i ended up buying some cereal instead. the customer service at the cafe in building 500 is much better!

    What to do for fun

i have a membership at the gym in dsc which i usually go to before i go to work. they also have various clubs on the campus.

The school is conveniently located throughout the state of Florida.
The professors are very knowledgeable about their subjects.
The school makes it easy for me to plan a schedule that meets my needs as both a full-time student and a part-time employee.

    Tips for prospective students

If it's going to be your first year at a college and you're fresh out of High School, don't worry. DSC makes it easy to speak with the academic advisors and their hours of operation are convenient for just about anyone. They will work with you to create the ideal schedule that can fit your requirements as well as theirs so that you can earn your AA degree in a short amount of time.

    Academic Rigor

If you haven't duel enrolled before, it's okay. The first couple of semesters will be tough but that's only because you have to get the pre-requisites out of the way before you can take those fun classes. Study hard and party less and your college life will be just fine.

    Dorm Life

Daytona State College does not offer on campus living, to my knowledge, but you won't need it anyway because the city has plenty of apartment complexes that will suite any needs you may have and at a convenient price too. The Daytona campus is surrounded with plenty to do.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of restaurants around the Daytona campus so no matter what you are in the mood for, DSC isn't too far from your dining needs.

    What to do for fun

There's not too much to do in Daytona because, let's face it, it's not Orlando or anything but there are a couple of fun things to do...take the beach for example which is located a couple miles East of the college not to mention there's the Volusia Mall just a block or so away within walking distance.

    Did learn a lot

The core classes were really behind, however I learned that it was because the entire Florida school system was behind, in comparison to Maryland. Offered little intellectual challenge to me, however, if you are from Florida, it's standard. Really good teachers who will help you out.

    Did enjoy being here

Enjoyed it quite a bit, however, as opposed to other colleges, there isn't much to do actually AT the college(but plenty around the college).

    Bang for the buck

Well, this is one point where I have to say it was definitely worth it. I had a large chunk($500-$1000 a semester) of my tuition paid for. It was still kind of expensive, but nowhere near my college now.

    Am learning a lot

I never thought I'd have such good things to say about a community college and the level of education/help. But truly, I'm quite impressed. I have not had a professor I have not liked - or felt anything but great appreciation/love for - I cannot even choose my favourite. They're very involved in and concerned with your education, your goals, and your progress. At least my professors - they've been real, realistic, conversational.. They make you feel like you're more of an equal - like they're talking WITH you and not just TO you - they want you to understand, to learn, and to excel. I've learned more in the few classes I've taken at DSC than I learned in my SCC, and even my high school, classes.

    Am enjoying being here

Aside from the money part.. and then the fact that there's more and more people as time goes on - I have no complaints. I wish I could afford school, or at least qualify for Federal Financial Aid. I wish there weren't such lines when waiting to speak with Financial Advisors, etc. But really, that's all I can complain about. That's it. I like the environment, the location (there's a campus accessible to all areas of the counties), and the class-sizes. I like that I have just as many options for classes, as any other school in the area - if not more so, I have more BA-program options than any other CC or SC in the area.

    Bang for the buck

Again, all I would change is making it cheaper - but it's already one of the cheapest in the state. Even their specific courses/degrees are cheaper than other school's and their equivalent. I looked up my basic AA classes/total, from SECPS, and I think it was just 5200$ - total. Most colleges (SC & CC) are that, per year - at least. That's incredible. Definitely cost-efficient.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to have all your ducks in a row as much as possible - you can never be too thorough. Don't sign up for classes if you're not intending on taking them. Take in-class courses before taking an online course - get a feel for the layout of the courses, the campus, first.

Great for these types of students

Those who still want to work. Those who haven't been to school in a while. Those who want to save money. Those who have non-traditional, complicated, and/or alternative schedules. Those who want to be able to focus in class - those who want a more personal relationship with their professors. Those who don't mind saving money for a closer education - physically/location-wise, and accessibility/teacher-wise. Those who have plans to go further - there are FSU, UCF, and UF campuses/partners and effortless-transfer options.
