The teachers here so far are high-quality. They care about whether or not you learn what they are teaching you, and they are always willing to answer your questions and meet with you if you are having difficulties. Each has a different teaching style, so you may not get along 100% with everyone. However, in the end, I promise that you will learn at least something from every class.

    Am enjoying being here

I really love being here!!!!!! There is right now about 10,000 total students- not too big, not too small. The campus is its own community, and yet if you want to explore the city, it's easily a ten minute walk to get there. There are TONS of activities, sports, and clubs to join, and if you don't see one you like, you are free to create your own. Dormrooms feel a bit cramped, but it's homey, and comes with decent furniture. The campus is nice too (i.e. no litter). Food is decent- not like home cooking, but then again, what is? And finally- be prepared for Steeler mania, cause this is where it's at.

    Tips for prospective students

one) if you don't know your roommate, call/Facebook with them beforehand, and get to know them; two) if you have any issues during the semester, seek help- RAs, teachers, friends, anyone. It's worth it.; three) go to class, and do your work. It'll make finals so much easier. four) get to know the teacher. It'll make it easier to ask for help if you need it. five) get involved. There's tons of stuff to do. six) you'll get out what you put into your college experience; seven) NEVER go into the city without a buddy, cab money and a cell phone; and finally) it's okay if you feel scared and/or homesick. You're not the first, and you won't be the last to feel that way. And it will pass in time.

Great for these types of students

Duquesne is great for everyone- city goers, small-towners, preppies, gamers, jocks, geeks, you name them. There is something for everyone. And no matter what your major is or what you're into, trust me, you will find stuff to do and people to hang out with.

Duquesne University is a very prestigious school that has an entire melting pot of students. You will find an interesting mix of people from all different races, religions, and ethnicities. Also, teachers are absolutely great. I am going to be a sophomore and I must say that the teachers I met in my freshman year were exceptional. I am a psychology major and I feel like I had a great relationship with my psych teachers. One teacher offered me advice and told me that I could use her as a reference anytime. I feel that the professors at Duquesne actually care about their students and are not solely there for a paycheck.

    Am enjoying being here

This university is practically in the heart of Pittsburgh, however, it has it's own little environment. Unlike the crowded, busy hustle of the streets of Pittsburgh, Duquesne offers a laid-back environment. In the warm seasons the campus constantly is being trimmed and having flowers planted. Walking to class you're almost guaranteed to see a squirrel or two run across your path. It honestly is the best of both worlds. Also, Duquesne has the a weekly newsletter emailed out to all students every week updating everyone on the events that happens daily. Last year I remember talent shows, carnivals, free food, caricature paintings, and so much more that is always free. And if none of that floats your boat, you're only a 10 minute bus ride from Oakland or the Southside works.

    Bang for the buck

As I mentioned previously, it is a prestigious school and it definitely will leave a dent in your wallet. The school offers plenty of jobs for students, activities, internships and more. Also, unlike larger colleges, the majority of classes will consist of about 30 students and teachers will learn your name quickly. Which is nice to have because they get to know you personally rather than just be a name on their attendance sheet. So it may be more expensive than some public or other private schools but you will end up paying for it in the end.

    Tips for prospective students

If I can give you any advice, I would definitely recommend eating at Options as much as you can. Out of all the food places and cafeterias on campus that you can use your meal plan for - Options is the best. It's the closest to home cooking and the staff workers are always super friendly. Also, Starbucks accepts flex only during evening hours... but remember that usually the last 2 weeks of school they accept it any time of the day! And trust me it will be needed during finals week.

Great for these types of students

Any students that want to go to a well-respected school that teachers will promise to know your name in the first few weeks of school. It holds about 6,000 undergraduate students and every semester I have had all of my teachers know my name. Also, if you want to live in a big city with great night life but want to be far away from it that it will be quiet and mellow at night if you stay on campus, this is perfect for you. Also, just because it is a Catholic school does not mean that every student is religious and you will not be forced to see any religious view if you do not wish to. However, I do know that if you went to a Catholic high school you get a decent discount.

Learning is very easy here, the teachers use many methods from group work to recitation sessions and having tutors available for everyone. Teachers are very approachable and easy to communicate with; via e-mail, office hours and many teachers give a phone number as well. Also, many subjects have numerous Teaching Assistants and some even have Undergraduate Assistants that make it even easier to learn the material for courses.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to do, there are soccer, football, basketball, volleyball and many more games to watch. There are also literally hundreds of clubs and organizations to, multiple intramural activities that are scattered through out the day to fit in anyone's schedule, and numerous events put on by Duquesne, including video game contests and movie nights. Plus there is the city life, professional sporting events, tons of restuarants, fairs, parks, and so much more

    Bang for the buck

The experience is definitely worth it, for the great education and the life lessons learned through everything going on, on and off campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Research the Pittsburgh area before starting school, the public transportation takes time to get used to and bring a map of the city with you. Stay organized, there are so many students that your teachers aren't going to give too many second chances, many of the schools are very competitive so you don't want your grades to drop below expectations.

Great for these types of students

Almost anyone, everyone is friendly and anyone will fit in. There are tons of majors and minors to choose from too that allow almost everybody to be able to apply for what they want to do, but most majors have minimum GPA requirements so you can't be lazy and have to do the work.

Duquesne University is a mid-size campus with all buildings within walking distance from the dorms. The learning community (with approximately 10,000 students) is extraordinary with teachers willing to help you in any way possible in order to earn that A. Paid tutors are available for students which shows that the university does care about your success. Teachers are willing to work with you over conflicts that may arise and offer lots of opportunities to hear and help with any questions you may have. Duquesne also brings in a lot of guest speakers, which can be listened to free of charge. One that was brought in last year was Eric Holden Jr., Attorney General of the United States! I have learned so much, and I know that if you go there, you will too! : )

    Am enjoying being here

Duquesne has 80+ organizations on campus that hold events almost every week including free movies on Fridays. One of these organizations is the Office of Freshman Services, which assists freshman in their adjustment to college by offering guidance, newsletters, and a one of a kind orientation program. Duquesne is also located in the heart of Pittsburgh and within walking distance of the Consol Energy Center. For sports fans, this town is perfect since it is home to the Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates. I would definitely check out Duquesne and all it has to offer by going to www.duq.edu.

    Bang for the buck

Duquesne is expensive. However, by going here you will learn a lot from professors, other students, and life in general that is invaluable. You will be with students from all over the world and have opportunities to study abroad in Ireland and Italy if you wish. Plus, the financial aid office is willing to help out as much as possible to ensure that all costs will be covered. This university really wants to help you to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Adjusting to college life is difficult. Dorm life is a necessary evil, and hopefully you are blessed with a great roommate, if not try to make the best of the situation. You must be diligent with your studies especially during the first month because as soon as the first round of tests hit, the rest of the semester only gets harder. Please take advantage of the free tutors that are available if the material is difficult and hard to understand. Try to get involved in at least one organization on campus to maximize your potential while at Duquesne. Finally, find a routine for studying that works and stick with it. Remember that you are there to earn an education, you can party the rest of your life once you earn that high paying job!

Great for these types of students

Duquesne is well known for their health services programs (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Speech-Language Pathology, and Nursing) as well as for the Mylan School of Pharmacy. If you are considering these professions, then Duquesne University should be high on your list!

As a Freshman student at Duquesne University, I have learned so much during my first semester. I have taken courses in philosophy, English, and science. I learned something new in all of these course and each new idea expanded on the stuff I already knew.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a good distance away from home, and I am the only student from my old high school to go to Duquesne University. I have gained more meeting new people and I have made so many different friends. I enjoy the hills and the view.

    Bang for the buck

    Yes.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus and look at what the schools are offering. The program/major that I am studying is DPT, and part of this that I have six years of school and when I graduate I was have a BS is Biology and Health Science Management and a DR in PT. This program was a get set up and that is why I picked it. When I went to visit the campus, I really could see myself doing well.

Great for these types of students

The professors are for the most part incredibly insightful and want you to learn as much as possible when studying under them. The courses can be rigorous at times, but when you learn to manage your time correctly, there is a lot of knowledge gained and time well spent.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love this campus. It truly is like it's own little community inside of the huge city of Pittsburgh.

    Bang for the buck

Duquesne offers great programs to study in, programs that few other colleges have. Though they can be a bit pricey, in the end it is completely worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Always try to do your best and do not be afraid to seek help if you need it. There are more than enough opportunities to get help in any subject possible. Try to get to know your professors as well, the more you know them, the better standings you are in with them.

Great for these types of students

Duquesne University is great for people who know exactly what they want to go for and for those wanting to get into the medical field somehow. The schools of study on this campus are, pharmacy, nursing, natural and environmental sciences, music, liberal arts, leadership and professional advancement, law, health science, education and business. So there is a school for almost anyone who knows exactly what they want to do.

duquesne welcomes students of all types, be they left-brained, right-brained or a bit scatter-brained. many students come to study pharmacy or other health sciences, but you'll find a great number of students in the music school and liberal arts school. despite your differences in study or where you've come from, duquesne offers a home to students who desire to connect more with others through learning, serving others and enjoying all that god has provided(don't let the catholicism aspect of duquesne scare you - it's honestly not a huge part of all student life here, but it is really nice to live in a moderately religious community, as many people are so genuine in all the joy they exude).

    Tips for prospective students

be sure to evaluate all your college choices based on several factors, such as feeling/sense of the school as a whole(you will be spending a great deal of time with it!), cost, academic and social opportunities. with duquesne, you'll surely find plenty of extracurricular activities in which to participate and opportunities to have fun off campus in southside, station square, downtown, etc. and for your curricular life, you'll find lots of interesting classes and experiences to share with friends across your academic field.

    Academic Rigor

you'll get out of class what you put into it. this rule applies for all majors, all classes, all years. whether you're in an easy major or an easy school, the amount of interest and dedication you'll devote to the class will determine your grade and you're ability to move forward with confidence.

    Dorm Life

different dorms have different perks and social stigmas, but on the whole, living on campus is a great choice. every college student can relate when you comment about cafeteria food and fire alarm drills and the like. but the experience of living together with your peers and making the most of your environment is well worth the money!

    Food and Dining

aramark provides all the dining services for duquesne, so you'll become very accustomed to the food. keep your wits about you and know when to indulge and when to eat smart. ultimately, it's up to the student on how to eat, so don't point the finger at aramark or duquesne.

    What to do for fun

it may take awhile to find your place, but whether you stay on campus or go off campus, there's plenty to do! the city of pittsburgh provides plenty of opportunities to explore, shop, take pictures, exercise - whatever! you'll find that many organizations on campus meet regularly, so you'll always be caught up! though, there's plenty of downtime which can be used to chill in your room or bum around with friends.

    Bang for the buck

as a private institution, we rely more on tuition and other sources of income rather than state funding. public institutions need state aid to fund their programming, and if this funding is insufficient, they'll turn to raising tuition. while in this economy, all colleges and universities are raising tuition, but duquesne strives to provide quality education with minimal backlash on student wallets.

Great for these types of students

duquesne has a wide mix of students, so no one stereotype fits a duquesne student. in general, duquesne students take their studies seriously, and also find the opportunity to have fun and goof off with friends. this sounds pretty typical of all colleges, but it's nice to know that a prestigious and studious university such as duquesne is not all about book learnin'.

    Clubs and Activities

all organizations advertise themselves well and encourage students to seek them out and join. even if you are not directly involved with a group, you're welcome to join in the fun and sponsored events. there is a great sense of community amongst the organizations to provide a wonderful holistic experience for students.

    Greek Life

with seven sororities and eight fraternities, duquesne greek life is not a huge deal on campus. however, take the opportunity to explore what sets each group apart - you'll find that many greeks defy the sorority girl or frat boy stereotype.

Duquesne University has SO much to offer for students of any age and status in school. Starting out with the basic courses you gain an even stronger knowledge in areas such as Mathematics, Theology, and Philosophy, which will most definitely help you as you advance into upper class courses. The professors at this school are absolutely incredible and want nothing more than to see you learn as much as you possibly can while enrolled. There is a lot of work involved regardless of what degree you pursue, but that's the whole point of attending school, to gain knowledge!

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being in Pittsburgh. Duquesne's campus is gorgeous and so peaceful compared to most Universities located in a central, downtown area. Living on campus has definitely been a rewarding experience, letting me get involved in a number of different activities ranging from Greek Life to helping the freshman as a Team Leader during Orientation. Also, many people will refer to Duquesne as a happy family, which may sound a little awkward to most... However, rest assured that you really do become a family in the sense that you have an instant connection with anyone involved with Duquesne. There is always, always, always someone that knows of someone that has gone to Duquesne. Believe me, even after studying abroad in Rome (another HUGE thing offered by Duquesne!), I realized just how small the world really is.

    Bang for the buck

Although Duquesne is a bit pricey, it is beyond worth the expense. The experience and knowledge that you gain at this school will far outweigh the price that you pay for tuition. Besides, the money you are putting into this school is going towards the amazing educators and facilities on campus that enable you to reach your goals and graduate with a prestigious degree.

    Tips for prospective students

Come into Duquesne with an open mind. There is no better piece of advice that I was offered as a new student than to make as many connections as you possibly can. It may sound daunting, however you'll find that it is very doable and beyond worth it. Get yourself involved in anything that interests you; Greek Life, Orientation, Volunteering, Drama Club... The possibilities are seemingly endless. Make sure that you have a firm foundation in extracurricular activities like those I just listed and you will be reaping the benefits in no time! Also, never hesitate to contact your professors outside of class. Once you establish to your professor that you care about the class and express your concerns and goals, you will, once again, only benefit.

An expensive college. Duquesne feels like a family. It is very well located within the city of Pittsburgh.

    Tips for prospective students

A small but homely campus community that is safe and secure in its surroundings. The staff and professors are accommodating and supportive, and even the janitors will have a nice thing or two to say when you encounter them in the halls. Student activities are abundant, just make sure you handle the heavy work load with grace!

    Tips for prospective students

The only tips I can offer are to learn the campus layout before the first day of class. Without any idea where to go, you'll get lost pretty quick, even if the campus isn't all that large. Also, if you're commuting, get a garage parking pass before they're all gone- surface parking is illegal under the terms against cruel and unusual punishment.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on what major you intend to pursue. I know everyone has had an academic counselor pull them aside and quite plainly tell them if you treat college like high school you will struggle, but this is doubly true of the environmental sciences. But you shouldn't worry, the rest of the class will be suffering along with you and eager to form a study group or two to understand the material-just start talking to others early and actually attend the orientations.

    Dorm Life

I really have no ability to comment on this section as I am a commuter. However, the dorms have an excellent view of the Allegheny river and overlook some of the best views on campus. In addition, a new dorm is opening for this next semester.

    Food and Dining

The food is healthy enough- they provide a large salad bar and a variety of foods- and there are many locations to visit. However, the same food is present at each and the choices do exhaust after several weeks. From what I have seen, the healthy food is actually more expensive, so most freshmen start off eating poorly nutrition wise- so make sure you fork over the extra cash to eat a salad every once in a while.

    What to do for fun

There are many areas on campus available to have fun, the most noted being the Night Spot on the first floor of the Student Union. A line of couches view a large screen television and display programs, and it also features all the most up-to-date videogame consoles at the cost of a student ID card- show it and you can do anything you want without cost. Also, the academic walk is excellent for hanging out with friends when the weather is fair.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's only one tradition I can think of other than the surprise fire drills, and that's Scary Jesus. There is a monument on campus of Jesus nailed to the cross, and it is rumored that if you walk too near to the inner circle during finals week you will fail them all. Personally, I don't walk by him everyday, so i'm not all that concerned.

Great for these types of students

Duquesne is great for all types of students as it features a variety of majors, however expect a lot of gum chewing. It is a rather expensive school and the privileged tend to take advantage of its curriculum.

    Clubs and Activities

Honestly, I have yet to participate in any college club activities as I am in an accelerated, 5 year master degree program. From what i've seen, they are rather difficult to find to join, but they are all around campus. Just inquire with the professor who sponsors them and you'll find yourself right where you want to be.

    Greek Life

I am personally not involved, but if this is what is for you- a group organization motivated to both give back to the community as well as dabble into your respective major as a preparatory step to your career- then it is definitely worth a try. There are many opportunities to join the Greeks and they are represented clearly across campus by posters, t-shirts, and fliers.

    Campus Safety

The campus police can be seen swarming the campus daily, and there is a feed system that alerts you to any going-ons via text message and automated call. The staff does its part to watch for strange goings-on, and students are encouraged to be vigilant. Even outdoors in the commons there are red buttons fixed to lamp posts to call for a campus emergency- as well as their emergency number- if you ever feel threatened at Duquesne University.
