Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently enrolled at Kendall (Ferris affiliate) and I find that the art studio and elective classes are very thorough and challenging. The professors are enjoyable, the atmosphere is non-competitive and the student life enjoyable and fun. Warning: Classes are very strict on deadlines, so keep on your toes! Freshmen Classes may seem repetitive if you took similar in high school but take them anyway! Very refreshing and informative.
Am enjoying being here The student life includes holiday parties (like the upcoming Halloween party, complete with costume contest) and active participation in art exhibitions, internal and external (i.e. Art Prize of Grand Rapids). Kendall is big on student works being displayed and has them frequently displayed in the halls. We all get our equal share of attention.
Bang for the buck Though the classes are enjoyable and the atmosphere is awesome, the tuition is expensive. 12,000+ dollars is estimated for each year. Keep up with tuition bills and talk to the counselors frequently to check balances, pick the correct classes, etc.
Tips for prospective students Be serious about what you want to be in the Arts. You may want to consider (when thinking about major/minors) if this will get you an actual job or not. None of us want to be (for example) freelancing and tragically earn low income from our work, only to resort to commercial jobs we don't like in the future. Talk to the counselor about your desired major and your plans for the future. It'll all be worth it. Also, work fast! Kendall is easy going but you still need to keep up on assignments!
Great for these types of students Artists (young and older), artists who desire guidance, dreamers, entrepreneurs of the Arts, art historians, preservers, fast workers, artists with a keen eye for detail, artists with a fresh style, artists who seek their own or want to pursue traditional styles

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Professors are helpful if you ask for help. Also, find a lot of studying time to learn the most information.
Am enjoying being here Love the country aspect and small town feel!!!
Bang for the buck Expensive, but cheaper than most.
Tips for prospective students Research classes and know the classes you need. Otherwise you will be enrolled in classes you don't need because of course they want more money and for you to stay here longer.
Great for these types of students Country and small town students.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This teachers make every class room a friendly place. The know you by name, which is unlikely to happen at other universities. The information they teach is challenging, but they give you many options to succeed including office hours and free tutoring centers and writing centers
Am enjoying being here The school is located in a quiet friendly small town. This leaves you with less distractions from your school objectives. There are still plenty of fun things you can find. This school never has a dull moment.
Bang for the buck Your money is well spent here. There are lots of free events on campus, lots of organizations and sports teams and even a great recreation and fitness center.
Tips for prospective students The best way to know if a school is right for you is to visit the school and if possible spend the night there. Just because it is right for me doesn't make it right for you.
Great for these types of students This school is best for students who like a quiet close and friendly environment. Who want the great education along with great teachers who learn you as a person.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You get a lot of professors who adore their subject matter. In my opinion, there is no better way to learn than from those who are passionate about what they teach.
Am enjoying being here This campus in unlike many others in that it is so centered. You can find everything fairly easily and no walk is more than fifteen minutes. The atmosphere always edges on excitement and someone is constantly there if you need a smile.
Tips for prospective students Visit before you decide between Ferris and another school. There is a certain charm to this place you can only find with your eyes. It's what sold me!
Great for these types of students If you're looking for a place where you can actually find a relationship with your fellow students and your professors, a place to experience every season to its fullest, and where you never know what you're going to see next, come to Ferris State University.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently a freshman so I am in general education classes right now. Most of the stuff is just a review from high school right now so it's really easy.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love it at Ferris. It is a small town, but there is always a lot going on so it is easy to get involved with things.
Bang for the buck It is somewhat expensive, but in my mind it's worth it because I love it.
Tips for prospective students Go to class is the number one thing. If you don't, you'll get behind because the tests are based off the lectures.
Great for these types of students Ferris is good for students that want a big school, but not an overwhelming huge one. You see the same people all the time so you get to know everyone really well.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Ferris State University has been teaching students every semester for over 100 years. Over this time they have a lot of practice in teaching and improving their curriculum. It shows every day when I step into that class room and come out of it with more knowledge then I had before I went in.
Am enjoying being here Ferris State offers many different registered student organizations. So no matter what your interest are there is bound to be one that fits your liking.
Bang for the buck Ferris State has very reasonable cost of attending. It is not as cheap as most community colleges but at the same time is one of the least expensive universities around Michigan.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking to attend Ferris State I highly recommend it. To me it was one of the best decisions of my life. At no point have i regretted making the decision and it only keeps getting better.
Great for these types of students If you like being part of a friendly and welcoming environment then Ferris is the place for you. The people here are great! Also if you want to be able to say that you graduated in one of the most unrecognized, great universities in the country then come here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Ferris State University has the perfect sized campus. It's faculty is great and are interested in your improvement. You will be successful at Ferris State University.
Tips for prospective students Do not get stuck with 8 am classes, you will regret it. Drinking is not more important than your grades, you are here to get an education not drink your life away.
Academic Rigor The academics at FSU are not very rigorous. They are just like any other college level class. You will have work to do but it is obtainable and will teach you very valuable lessons about time management.
Dorm Life Life in the dorms is very great if you are a friendly person. Your resident advisers will be friendly and help you with any problems you have. The dorms are very small though and sometimes uncomfortable.
Food and Dining The Rock Cafe is the best place to eat on campus. It is a buffet style restaurant and includes many different types of food. The food is great for a couple of weeks and then gets old after eating there everyday.
What to do for fun You can participate in many intramural sports or join a fraternity/ sorority.
Bang for the buck The University is priced well for a University.
Greek Life Joining a fraternity or a sorority will be one of the best decisions of your life. They will teach you how to be a better person and teach you how to build yourself for the future.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Ferris State University is a great educational institution. You get a lot of hands on experience and the athletics have the whole community behind them regardless of a win or lose. It's a very tight knit community and the class size is small so you get to know the teachers on a first name basis.
Tips for prospective students Do your research and make sure the college has your program. Don't choose this school just because your friends go here. Get to know your teachers on a first name basis so when it comes time to need a recommendation letter for either grad school or internships they will know who you are.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor for my majors is pretty intense. I chose Biotechnology as one of my majors which happens to be the hardest major that Ferris has due to the fact that I have to take every upper level science class that the school has to offer. I'm always studying or doing homework 5 or 6 days a week.
Dorm Life I've never personally lived in the dorm. I was a transfer student so I was automatically allowed to live in the on campus apartments. I've been in friends dorms and they are pretty small. You know a few people in your hall and maybe more if you decide to hangout in the lobby and meet new people. People are less interactive in the honors dorms.
Food and Dining The food and dining is pretty good in Big Rapids. There are three big places on campus to eat which are The Rock, Westview, and Quiznos. If you don't like any of these places there are also all the off campus places like Burger King and Little Caesars.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do for fun. In town there is a little roller rink and a bowling alley. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat with friends like Applebees. Right down the road from campus there is a golf course. One of the most fun things to do in town is to go tubing.
Bang for the buck For the price I pay to live in Big Rapids and to attend Ferris State University I wish the town had more to do.
Clubs and Activities There are many on campus clubs and activities to fit everybody's interests. Currently i'm part of the Biotech club and the American Chemical Society.
Campus Safety Campus safety is pretty good on campus. Cops are always patrolling the campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a great school if you are looking for outcomes. They get you places in your life. However, initiative is key, they aren't going to babysit you.
Tips for prospective students The parking and roads are kind of confusing. I wouldn't bring your car the first year at least. Also, be aware that the doorms are co-ed. But, if you are in the honnors program, you get your own room.
Academic Rigor I think it sort of depends on you and how much you try as well as what program you are going into. When I was there, there was a lot of seminars and stuff going on.
Dorm Life I spent the night and loved it. The people where really fun and it was all open and friendly. Also the rooms are reasonably sized for 2 people.
Food and Dining This is the best college ood I have ever had. The Rock is delicious, and the meal plans are unlimited.
What to do for fun You can go rockclimbing, work out, hang out in the gym, or if you are willing to walk into town (only 10 to 15 min.) then you can also go rollerskatig, bowling, and who knows what else. You can also play cards or whatever in the lobby of the dorms.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences ferris allowed me to jump right into my major my second semester of attendance. i really like that ferris' advisors are active in our education. i meet with mine every semester to ensure i'm on the right track.
Tips for prospective students don't be a hermit when you attend ferris. there are tons of activities for all students free of charge year-round. if you just hang out in your room and go to classes, you'll miss the opportunity of having fun and meeting people you could potentially become friends for life with.
Academic Rigor like all schools, the rigor all depends on which professor you take. the professors i have had are very good, for the most part. they aren't looking for hand-out type of students. you get out of the classes what you put forth and i can honestly say that i haven't came out of any classes that i didn't retain information from.
Dorm Life from what i hear, most people enjoy living in the dorms. i can't say too much, however, because i am a commuter.
Food and Dining there are so many good places to eat in big rapids! they are all just walks away. the campus diners that i went to are very good and they have a wide variety of food selections. there is west view on one side of the campus and the rock on the other side. my personal favorite is the rock because it's newer and has a lot more food.
What to do for fun keep in mind, big rapids isn't a large town like grand rapids or anything, but there is bowling, dancing, university recreational center, and various concerts throughout the year. last year ferris held a rave and it was the most fun i've ever had!
Campus Safety campus safety is very good in my opinion. there's always ferris state police somewhere to help. if you have late classes and it's dark, there are emergency callers all around campus. some spots on campus aren't very well-covered, but i imagine they soon will be.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The university is very clean and a small campus. Not very diverse, predominantly white. There isn't a whole lot going on, but you find things to do.
Tips for prospective students Apply for honors! It's nice having your own room and getting priority registration for classes. Their financial aid department is great and really work with you to make sure you can pay for school.
Academic Rigor I feel it's what I expected in college. What you put in will be reflected by your grade. Professors are pretty straight forward and out there to help you.
Dorm Life I live in an honors hall and people are respectful and considerate. I haven't had any problems thus far.
Food and Dining I've been shockingly surprised with how good the food is. Lots of variety and generally tastes good.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are a lot of great professors here at Ferris. I especially enjoy my economics teacher. Many of the professors have been teaching for a while, so they are quite experienced.
Am enjoying being here The area around Ferris is very rural, so if you like the city life, you might want to look at another college. If you like the small town feel, however, Ferris is the place for you.
Bang for the buck There are less expensive colleges, but Ferris isn't too bad. The biggest cost other than tuition is room and board.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Teachers are very helpful and offer many ways for students to learn and absorb the discussed material.
Am enjoying being here Ferris is in Big Rapids, a small close-knit community where teachers know you by name. While the town isn't very big the friends you make provide more than enough enjoyment.
Bang for the buck Dorms, classrooms, and dining areas are all pretty nice. Dorm rooms are a little outdated in some areas of campus, but the newly renovated class buildings and dining area makes up for it.
Tips for prospective students If you want a busy city with a lot of night life, Ferris probably isn't your school. However, if you grew up in a smaller town and want to keep it that way this college is the best. It's not too busy or crowded, but there's still enough to keep you busy.
Great for these types of students Laid-back students looking to relax when not in class, students who like small quiet towns, students that are highly motivated and take their class work seriously.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This is not high school. Do not assume that since this is Ferris State your going to have an easy road that is not the case. You are expected to do college level work, and the only way to do college work is to study. Study and get help from teachers, tutors, or fellow classmates. If you want to succeed here you have to put time in the classroom and library.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love being in Big Rapids, but how you perceive it might be completely different. First of all, since this is Big Rapids you are NOT going to be surrounded by a metropolis of things to do. Big rapids is bland outside of the university. BUT the people make up for it. Though many people leave on the weekend. And I mean prolly 50% leave for the weekend out of 7,500 kids. There is stuff to do. Parties at the frats, house parties, and shooters. IF you make friends here your going to have fun, simply said. Your going to be an 18 year old kid living away from your parents. That scenario on its own, brings fun. Add to that a group of friends who want to enjoy these years too. You cannot go wrong.
Bang for the buck Price is not up to par, with the legacy this institution has. But it is pretty good, if you have a high ACT score or high gpa. You will get scholarships. Ferris willl prepare you for the field your going into, if you come here and have done your research into a particular field that has potential job growth and ferris offers the program. Ferris has the connections to get you prepared.
Tips for prospective students Your walking into the freshest experience of your life in college. This is the time where you can define who you want to be. It is a reset button, on your image, where if you want to be that popular kid you can do it. If you want to be that person with a close group of friends, you can do it. You can do whatever you WANT. Just think that decision through. At Ferris, I'm having fun learning and building my knowledge of life. You can do it here to. And if you decide to come try out the life in Big Rapids in the next 6 years, i hope to see you.
Great for these types of students Students who enjoy a small town setting. A fish in a middle size pool.
Students who want to make a noticeable impression on a community.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Ferris' curriculum is generally pretty straight forward. Right now I'm a Sophomore Health Care Systems Administration major and though I changed my major last semester I'm still finding that the general education classes I had to take are pretty helpful even if they aren't geared towards health care professionals.
Am enjoying being here I love Ferris. Though at first I was a little skeptical because of the size and location I've grown really attached to Ferris. It might not be University of Michigan size or have the more urban location of Western Michigan but I love it. It's got a very small town feeling. The professors are generally nice and understanding, the other faculty members know what they're doing (when you call with a question they don't connect you to several other offices, they answer your questions and if they don't know the answer they'll find it out for you) and there are plenty of student organizations to get involved with. Last year I was involved with Habitat for Humanity and this year I'm going an organization for future health care administrators and am an executive board member of the Up 'til Dawn organization (an organization that raises money for St. Jude's Pediatric Hospital). Whether you want to be involved or just focus on your studies Ferris really is great for either. Also they have community events like the Big Event, which is a school-wide community service event or Ferris Fest, a big concert at the end of the year. This spring at Ferris Fest Sean Kingston was our headliner!
Bang for the buck For a public, four-year university Ferris is definitely cost effective. They have all-you-can-eat meal plans and you just have to decide if you just want to be fed on the weekdays (perfect for students who live in the area and go home ever weekend) or 7 days a week. The financial aid is pretty extensive too and they help you apply for scholarships too!
Tips for prospective students First of all realize that not all professors are the same. If you decide to go to Ferris or any other school just remember that some professors have different teaching styles. For example, Professor Jones might be a lecture-only professor and Professor Smith might be a read on your own kind of a professor. If notes and sitting through lectures are your strong points Professor Jones might be the way to go. If you don't have strong reading skills you might want to opt out of taking Professor Smith, ect. Also make sure to pick a residence hall that isn't too far away from your classes. If you're taking only classes at the business building and you're a business management major than a residence hall by the business building might be a good idea for you.
Great for these types of students It's great for self-motivated people and people who need a little push in the right direction. It's best for people who want to get involved but involvement isn't mandatory. Pretty much any type of student will benefit from attending. Oh just be careful if you're coming in from a urban area because the small town atmosphere might give you culture shock.

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here Being that I've lived in this town since I was 7 years old I have become used to this place. It's a small community, but I'm hoping to get out of here once I graduate.
Bang for the buck I'm doing great for funding but I have a few advantages;
1. My father works here and as a result I get 8 free credits a semester
2. I work for Housing and Residence Life which gives me free room and board as well as providing me a job and a little extra money towards classes.
3. I qualified upon entrance to receive the Dean's scholarship which also helps pay for my tuition
With just these three things alone I only pay about $100 a semester. Dean's has a limited life, and mine is about to run out, but it is well worth looking into what scholarships the University will offer you.Great for these types of students For students going into Plastics, Pharmacy, and Automotive school this is a great place to be. However, if like myself you are enrolled in less well known college, English in my case, then you may not be really getting what you want. I find it difficult to get the classes I need at this college, but then again only 2-3 people graduate from my specific program each year.
