Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The Chemistry and Math department are very good. All the material in Chemistry is covered and the professors are exceptional. In the Math department TI-83 calculators are not allowed but on the plus side Professors such as Ada Monserrat help you to be a better mathematician.
Am enjoying being here The campus life is exciting and everything a freshman would expect from a college. The reason why this rating is a little low is because some classes are inconsiderate such as the biology department. They require that you take the class of course, and the lab which is expected, but on top of that there is a class called pltl that is required in total the bio department takes up 3 spots
Bang for the buck For the most part yes, but due to financial problems some students are left distraught because their majors may be dropped from the school.
Tips for prospective students Go to this college if you are into psychology, religion, tourism, and the law program is great also.
Great for these types of students If you are in to the Miami beach scene this college is a go to. This college is good for every type of person no matter what there is always a place to fit in. It's in Miami a cultural melting pot so no one is left out.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Florida International University is simply great. A lot of teachers care that you pass, just be sure you study a lot, do homework, and put in effort. In the end, you will truly be rewarded.
Am enjoying being here The campus is simply great, especially the first week. There is so many activities and events happening all over the campus. There are many clubs and extracurricular activities to be involved in. For example, I am currently working with a group of other students to develop an on-campus series to air in FIU. The experience that is gained is simply amazing. There are a lot of opportunities that can open doors for you.
Bang for the buck FIU has many opportunities for scholarships, grants and loans. They try to help you out as much as possible. And the classes are worth every cent as long as you put in the effort.
Tips for prospective students If you wish to do well, my advice would be to stay focused and involved. Although gaining experience in jobs and activities is important, how you do in school is your first priority! Study hard!
Great for these types of students Open-minded, Hard-working, Different. Almost all of these qualities can be found in the students as well as teachers enrolled in FIU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot What some people do not understand is that college is not all about book learning its also about life experiences. FIU is a great school for both. the teachers are a bit tough at times and helpful but that is their job. teachers want you to learn about life while learning about your major.
Am enjoying being here the most important thing is to be involved. just like any university, if you just come go to class and leave you are never gonna enjoy your time. i work for the school and i love it. i have met new people and all of them are very helpful. lets not forget that Miami is an awesome party city but remember you are in college and it is your job to be responsible while having a great time.
Bang for the buck FIU is kind of expensive but i do not think it is overpriced. All Universities are tough on the budget but for what you get, FIU is at a good price. work hard and get scholarships and you will be fine.
Tips for prospective students Look into what you are getting into before deciding to do anything. Taking classes with friends is wonderful because they push you to go to class and when its time to study they are there. studying is extremely important but remember you're young and in college so enjoy your time as much as you can and as responsible as possible.
Great for these types of students FIU is a school for very independent capable personalities. what i mean is that teachers here do not care what you do they believe that the students should be responsible for what they do. it is a perfect school to teach you about your degree but also about what life is gonna bring.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot FIU is, first and foremost, a University. It's not a college. It can be tough on its students, and it has a 'no-nonsense' attitude when it comes to exams. You'll find few to no teachers there who are willing to baby their students. As such, it would be advisable to get your game face on and be ready for a rigorous study schedule, as it's the only thing that will keep you afloat besides tutoring sessions.
Am enjoying being here This University is beautiful. Campus is immaculate, and dotted with art displays and interesting architecture. Each building looks like it belongs to a completely different part of the city. It's an engaging atmosphere that can best be appreciated as an on-campus student, as there's always something going on, somewhere to be, or something to do. As an international University, it also offers a rich melting pot of cultural diversity, something I've come to appreciate after meeting a few international students.
Bang for the buck If one knows how to tackle college life right, FIU can be a wonderful learning environment. There is no shortage of possibilities there, not even nearing graduation, the time of year when their career services office is busiest holding mock interviews and assisting pre-grads on their hunt for employment opportunities.
Tips for prospective students DON'T. PROCRASTINATE. In an environment as engaging as that of FIU, it's only too easy to lose oneself. Keep your head in the game, and remember that you're there for the degrees and opportunities. It was a mistake I myself made, an excitable freshman positively dying to experience college life. Remember that you have a full four years (or more, if you like) to enjoy all that FIU has to give. Trying to cram it all into one semester will only serve to lower your GPA and get you kicked out for good.
Great for these types of students FIU (the Honors College in particular) is not for the faint of heart. Students that can accept educational challenges and balance them well with extracurriculars will flourish. Students who have a good concept of time management and are culturally accepting also have an advantage.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot College is truly the place to learn not memorize. At FIU, the opportunities for learning and academic fulfillment are endless. Tips: get to know your professor, ask questions, and most importantly study hard!
Am enjoying being here Aesthetically, the campus is beyond beautiful and people are amiable. Although college should not precede to socialization over academics, it is important to join organizations and clubs that will help you meet new people and network. An Important part of being a successful in college is familiarizing yourself with the environment in which you study and are inevitably part of.
Bang for the buck Compared to other school, FIU is truly a “bang for the buck” In a good way that is. You will get a great education, for a lot less money than other public universities. After all, you do not want to be full of debt after you graduate.
Tips for prospective students College experience is entirely subjective. Everything they say in high school that professors are mean and that it is super hard are all lies. As long as you stay focused and on task, you will thrive at FIU. Start college with a blank mind set, build your own schemas, and do not let people’s comments interfere with your unique experience as a college student. I will not lie and say that college is 100% “fun for all,” but make the best out of your college experience.
Great for these types of students FIU is home to people from all round the world--hence the ‘international’ in FIU. Whether you are an athlete or complete nerd, you will find your niche at FIU without a doubt.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers are great here. Most of them will help you and have office hours. Unfortunately, the office hours are not very flexible with your schedule. I have only had a bad experience with the math teacheres here, but all my other professors have been a delight.
Am enjoying being here I love the campus, it is so calm and nice. There are always activities to take part of here and many programs offered, though most are overpriced. One thing i do love are the free movies every Friday and the free health services.
Bang for the buck The financial aid office is a pain whenever they mess up on something, but the tuition is worth it.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! Pick the earliest orientation especially if you start in fall.
Great for these types of students Know what you want already starting orientation. Ask people who know what classes you need to get the best classes. They fill up ridiculously quick.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students If you're living on campus, make sure you look into scholarships and financial aid because it's expensive! And get to know a lot of people because there's not many on-campus activities. Also, take advantage of all the resources, such as the success center and tutors for free!
Great for these types of students Great for students that are more independent because there's not really much to do on campus. If you're outgoing and love to party, but at the same time know how to manage your time and get your work done, this is a good school. Being right by downtown Miami, it can be pretty distracting!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently in the FIU Honors Program and it has been a great experience. The teachers are excellent and the classes are rich in knowledge, if you really want to take advantage of them though you absolutely need to put in your effort. A lot of the classes are integrated with online tools so you'll be spending some time learning online. A convenient feature of these classes is that they even have an app for Smart Phones so you can study on the go.
Am enjoying being here I love FIU's environment, the nice Miami weather and the coolness of both students and faculty. The professors are really nice and won't have a problem sharing a laugh with students outside of class. There are tons of clubs and fraternities/sororities, so if you like to be involved you'll definitely find something that suits you. Sports-wise we are very spirited and there's always some activity going on somewhere in campus so you'll never find yourself saying I have nothing to do today.
Bang for the buck Compared to most other universities FIU is quite affordable. My average semester runs for about $3000 (16-17 credits). Living expenses are probably a bigger issue, but if you don't mind sharing with fellow students you can split the rent (you might be paying about $400 per month) or live on campus. Dining on campus is affordable and there's several places to choose from, so you won't go hungry or get bored of the same menu.
Tips for prospective students If you're considering FIU you must like big universities - FIU currently has about 44,000 students. That also means you'll meet people from every where around the world, with different customs and ideas and being open minded will help you socialize much better. Many students commute to campus and parking is typically an issue, so prepare to spend some time finding a convenient spot, or park a bit far and take a good walk through campus to get to your class. I live close to campus so I got a scooter, there's always easy parking for it and you'll enjoy the warm Miami breeze. ;)
Great for these types of students FIU is a great option if you're the type of person who likes a fast paced environment with tons of people around you - all the time. Miami is the perfect beach city, so if you're a beach goer give thoughtful consideration to FIU. The Law program is very good, the Pre-Med program is fairly new but is going great and has respectable funding, and Engineering is a big thing (I'm a Biomedical Engineering major), there's even a separate, smaller Engineering Center a few blocks away from the main campus for your upper division Engineering classes. One thing is for sure - if you want to make your college experience fun FIU is a perfect place.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot As a biology major school is a big stress. Luckily, my professors are always there to help. Whether you need help understanding or catching up, they're there. Believe it or not professors are normal human beings who understand the subject is hard, who understand its just one of those days, or who know it may just not be clicking. Take advantage of the time they're willing to give and the help the school offers, such as tutors. Even the little things may help the most. And if you love the field you're in, you wont even feel it. In the end, we're all college students, we must study. Classes maybe hard and the rules you may not like but at the end of the day you think about your future, and its all worth it.
Am enjoying being here As a sophomore at FIU i am proud to say I am a very involved panther. I am currently part of one of the top sororities at FIU, I am part of the FIU alumni association, part of an honor society, and i play sports. After all, i've realized you get from FIU what you give to it.
There’s also the fact that FIU in located in Miami. This city never sleeps. There’s always something to do, something or someone to see, someone to talk to or simply share memories with. There are music festivals, football games, parades, and educational activities for college students. Never a dull moment.Bang for the buck FIU is very inexpensive compared to most other schools but if there is still a problem, the financial aide office is always there to help. They offer many grants and student loans to those who apply for them.
Tips for prospective students Study and get involved, theres no way you wont enjoy your college experience.Yet always remember, you are first a student studying at FIU; everything else comes afterwards.
Great for these types of students The type of student who wants to be something. The type of student who wants to get somewhere. The type who wants to study but have fun while doing it and enjoy the college experience.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot FIU doesn't teach me anything. The classes are very poorly planned and most classes disregard if you attend. Even when attending classes, you don't really learn anything. However, it is well known for their business graduate program as well as it's new nursing program.
Am enjoying being here I really dislike the environment. It takes an hour just to park and cars are waiting at the entrances of parking garages to follow students that are leaving the school just to find a spot. The traffic is ridiculous on campus as well as around campus. It's nothing against FIU, as much as it is my incompatibility with the city of Miami.
Bang for the buck Miami is a very expensive area. Food and room and board are very pricey. Fortunately, FIU does give scholarships easily. I got a few scholarships that have helped me financially a lot.
Tips for prospective students Only go to FIU if you really like Miami area and if you have to due to financial needs. If you do decide FIU, living on campus would probably be more beneficial.
Great for these types of students students who love Miami and students who don't have the financial capability to leave home and they live in South Florida.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot College is basically writing notes, studying, and understanding the concept. I am truly learning what I didn't really learn in high school. Also, the professors spend valuable time with you whenever you need help in a certain topic in class. They have specific office hours where you can meet with them and talk about anything you are confused about. I am sure by the end of the day, you will understand the whole concept just because you had that one-on-one conference with your professor.
Am enjoying being here The students out here are very friendly. You will have friends the first day you arrive at FIU. There are all categories of people and many clubs and organizations you can choose from. So go out there and enjoy college life. It's the time you will never forget!
Bang for the buck It's pretty cheap if you are a commuter. FIU provides bus shuttle to the north campus and back to the south and there are alot of free activities you can attend to. Also, if you planning to live on campus, there are meal plans that you can use for the whole term.
Tips for prospective students Just remember college is a whole different ball game. You are not in the high school mode anymore. You don't have to wake up early and go to class if you don't want to because you choose your own classes the way you like. But when you choose your classes, make sure you are certain that it is most comfortable for you. Be sure to register for classes ahead of time because you may not find the right class for the right time that will be suitable for you. Additionally, don't procrastinate! You are responsible for your own actions and what you do on campus. Therefore, if you mess up you really have to go through alot to fix your mess.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the teachers are great professors. I suggest going to ratemyprofessor.com so you don't get stuck with a horrible teacher. This school is great for business and hospitality majors and offers alot of class for those majors. If you are having trouble understanding a certain subject, there's a 90% chance that the Learning Center has someone to help you understand it more. There's a tons of tutoring programs and some professors even spend one on one time with you. College isn't like high school, you can't cram last minute or pull an all nighter, study before hand !
Am enjoying being here FIU has two campuses, one campus is very home-y and you meet alot of people and know them on a name to name basis (BBC). The other campus is very big, theres always something going on and they offer free food and items that they give out which is good. Alot of people here are friendly so you won't have to worry about meeting new people. During the first two weeks of the semester beginning they always give out free food, items and a bunch of other stuff. There's almost something going on each week. They have movie nights, where the latest movies that have just came out, are playing for FREE(BBC). They have shows and invite special guests to come talk to the students.
Bang for the buck This school is very affordable compared to other schools in Florida. They offer loans if you cannot afford the tuition also have scholarships that you can try and apply for. Also they have alot of work study jobs for students, most TA's are FIU students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences an amazing school to attend. coming from new york, florida international university felt like home with the warm people and the warm climate. i would recommend anyone to come here.
Tips for prospective students still confused? choose regular classes and explore your surroundings. in f.i.u, they make it alright not to know what you want to be in life and direct you to a path that suits you.
Academic Rigor classes here are tough, but thats college. nothing is easy, it is what the student makes out of each class.
Dorm Life amazing. anyone would enjoy living on dorm. it makes going to early classes easier.
Food and Dining fresh is the place to go. there so many places to choose from on campus, you'll never be bored
What to do for fun it's miami! there is always something going on in or off campus. ask anyone, everyone is willing to be helpful.
Bang for the buck if you are a florida resident, coming here would not be a issue at all. being an out-of-state student, paying for school is more expensive, however, f.i.u is not an expensive school at all compared to other states. it's worth every penny
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus if you are a science or business major, the library will become your new home. it is the best place to study, and because most of the people there are doing the same thing, study groups could be formed.
Great for these types of students f.i.u is great for any type of student. this school is very diverse.
Clubs and Activities there are many clubs to choose from. anyone could join anything! a perfect place to build up your resume'.
Campus Safety exellent. the security here is amazing. i never feel insecure about walking around the campus at night

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences fiu is a great school for anyone who is looking for a diverse group of students and a great education. teachers will always have office hours open to help you whenever you need it and they truly encourage you to come ask them for help. fiu also makes it easy for you to work your schedule around your hours.
Tips for prospective students the biggest tip would be making sure that you get all of your financial aid done early because you don't want to have to wait and stress about it like i did and have to pay more money out of pocket rather than the money that you got for financial aid.
Academic Rigor i do feel challenged in my classes so far which is stressing but also a great thing because it pushes me to study, study, study!
Dorm Life depending on which dorm hall you live in you can have a lot of fun. lakeview is a great dorm hall that provides a lot of space in your room and plenty of activities to get involved in. also there are lounges on every floor that you can study in. i'd recommend you try to get a dorm in lakeview rather than panther hall, it isn't all that great over there.
Food and Dining there are a lot of options on campus! especially if you have a lot of panther bucks they all work there. the cafeteria is ok. it all depends on the day and what kind of food you like to eat. there's a shop on campus called breezeway and it has the best food ever. especially cookies, everyone goes insane for their cookies since they are one of the most popular things on campus.
What to do for fun for fun there are plenty of things to do. you can join groups, greek life, a sports team, anything you want! or you can take a walk around the beautiful campus. you might also want to just hop on the bus and go visit downtown miami or head to south beach. there's plenty to do in miami!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a tradition that if you spin the big cube on campus three times, you will get an a on your exam! also there is a bridge called the kissing bridge and if you share your first kiss on campus there then you will be with that person forever!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The amount you learn here, or for that matter at any college/university, is directly related to how much work you put in. If you study hard and put in an honest effort, you'll be rewarded for it. Most of the teachers care about your education and grades, and you just have to do your part and you'll do just fine.
Am enjoying being here Most of the students and Faculty are very friendly, and it is a great environment. The only thing one could be picky about is the parking, as the school at the moment is absolutely packed, although there is a lot of construction going on in an effort to alleviate this.
Bang for the buck If you want to go to school in Miami, you won't find a better one with this price tag in the area, it's a big school with a relatively small price tag and you get a great education.
Tips for prospective students Honestly if your GPA is good and your SAT/ACT is on par with it, you are guaranteed in, the school is still looking to expand and so isn't getting picky yet about its students, no telling if that trend will continue into these next couple of years.
Great for these types of students If you like a bustling environment, lots of events going on, people from every nationality and heritage you can think of, and a relaxed environment, this is your school. Go Panthers!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot FIU is a very exceptional school, I have learned a lot and at the same time have fun. But you must study that little bit of studying you've done in High School is not enough. You need to study and don't procrastinate.
Am enjoying being here I definitely enjoy being at FIU, they make it easy to manage you college life and social life. Their are many activities on campus, and lots of clubs.
Bang for the buck FIU host a lot of free event for the students, or in cheap price, for example last term there was a free concert featuring far east movement. There is always something going on, did I mention they have a gym that's free for students. Bonus
Tips for prospective students Always visit your adviser before a term to keep on track of you studies.
Like I said do not procrastinate.
Learn to manage your social and educational life.
Study in between classes.
If your off campus, do not go to the school everyday, safe gas, and get class every other day.Great for these types of students This college is good for every one, unless they don't have your major. The same teachers at UM sometimes teaches class there.
At the same time some of FIU teachers teach at Miami-Dade.
The money is not that much if you 5,000 dollars you will be able to take at least 4 class each semester. So fill out those FAFSA.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I have heard from a lot of friends who have gone here that their teachers have been exceptional. During orientation, I got the chance to meet a psychology teacher, and she seemed extremely knowledgeable about her subject area. Since Psychology is my major, this was really a turn on.
Will enjoy being here I visited the campus twice-Once with a current student who is also a close friend of mine, and once for orientation. I fell in love both times. The university is like a mini city in itself, with shops, restaurants, and everything that hard-working students will need to succeed.
Bang for the buck Though FIU is expensive, I believe it is worth all the pennies I can give. Orientation really opened my eyes to a lot of things, and how knowledgeable everybody that spoke is.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot College is not only about excelling in your classes in order to be rewarded with a degree but, it is also about life. At FIU you learn key concepts about working with your peers, time management and how to act in a professional manner. The university offers tons of different classes from artistic ones to complex sciences. I'm anxious to attend my orientation and choose. :)
Will enjoy being here Because I chose to live on campus I get to indulge myself in campus activities such as rushing to be in a sorority and various clubs. I haven't started school yet and I already have a list of things I'd like to be into.
Bang for the buck Out of all the schools I've researched FIU is the most affordable one.
Tips for prospective students TIPS : Make sure you not only maintain your G.P.A but also score well on the SAT/ACT. FIU WILL decline you if your G.P.A is good but your scores are lacking.
Great for these types of students People with positive mindsets who want success

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am enrolled as an undergraduate in the Biology department and have had a great experience so far with the mandatory classes (after, of course, checking with ratemyprofessor.com!). I have also taken classes outside of my degree (like Sociology of Sexuality, Spanish, and Intro to the Brewing Process-- of beer) and some of these classes have been my FAVORITE. These extra classes opened up my idea of what other majors existed and have presented me with some of my life long friends.
Am enjoying being here The students are by far some of the nicest people I have met (in and out my classes). Everyone is willing to talk to you, make a friend, or even just have someone to hang out with while on campus. There are places to eat just about everywhere you turn and look (granted some are expensive compared to the equivalent off-campus location but the fact that they are within reach between classes is what makes them worth the extra dollar!).
Bang for the buck FIU is expensive for being so far away from me. I live in Broward county and spend quite a bit of money on taking the turnpike to get to the Modesto Madique campus, let alone the 40 minute drive back and forth from home to campus. Gas prices are killing my wallet and that combined with the 60-80 miles I drive to get to whichever campus-- sometimes both campuses in the same day-- is what affected my grading of this bang for the buck
Tips for prospective students Definitely attend FIU for a great college experience!
Great for these types of students Productive, active, friendly.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor I'm majoring in Photography at FIU. The Art Program is amazing, top notch professors that are always willing to help you. The art history teachers are very educated, and your studio classes will have a long lasting impression on you as you share it with other people with amazing talents.
Am enjoying being here I really love being an FIU Panther! My primary campus is the south campus: Modesto Maidique. It has so many things to do on campus and very lively, I recommend taking classes there! There are a wide variety of restaurants (ie; Chili's w/ bar), they're always playing music inside, there's a Gamestop, Salon, Massage Center, and the library is immense and has more than 5 floors. FIU is an amazing place to be whether you're there for class, need a place to study, or just want to hangout. There are so many different types of people, I've met a lot of interesting people from all over the world!
Bang for the buck Although it is a pretty amazing University, I have to admit the tuition rising every semester is not such a pretty aspect of being a student there. Personally, I don't get much financial aid and sometimes struggle paying semesters. But, it is one of the lower priced good quality Universities in Florida. If you think about it, you're also paying for all the amenities, and the classes you are taking with these great professors. During Panther Pride UPROAR Week, FIU makes an effort to bring amazing things to students like we just had a concert with Flo Rida and Far East Movement, we've had Pitbull, Kid Cudi, and LMFAO come to perform, DayGlow Party with DJ Zog, every year is different. This year (2012) we have Travis McCoy and Big Sean.
Tips for prospective students Dear future Panthers, I cannot stress enough how important it is to go to your professors' office hours! The more you show your professor that you are interested and are making an effort, they WILL be more lenient on you and help you. Also, don't get too caught up in the fun things that you have to do on campus! Many professors are really great, but some can be strict, so focus on the prize: graduating with high grades. Good luck!
Great for these types of students I think FIU is great for anyone looking to have a great college experience. If you like having fun and are looking for a campus that has everything, I think FIU will be a great place. Art students! I think you will especially love the Program, you get Art Reviews where you can earn scholarships for Professors recognizing your talent among your works. Journalism and Nursing students have great opportunities as well. And if you're doing Engineering, there's a campus just for you! I highly recommend FIU, I love it. The piano room is an ideal place for music majors and art students. Nice vibe and hangout for the artsy!

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot I was in a program called QBIC. It is a program for biology majors that offers one-on-one attention from teachers in small class room settings. Due to this environment I expected to learn a lot.. This did not happen. Which is why I left the program and plan to became a regular FIU student to see if the issue was with the program, the school, or within myself.
Did enjoy being here I live on campus and I absolutely love it here. The teachers, RAs, and students make every moment enjoyable.
*Update: I decided to leave FIU after this summer (Summer2011) and I encountered more issues than I have time to go through. It was absolutely horrible and I'm glad to be attending another college.Bang for the buck I personally only pay for housing, my tuition and part of my supplies are paid by Florida and FIU scholarships. Because of this I feel that I am underpaying for the experience I am getting at FIU.
Tips for prospective students Work hard and have some fun! Don't stress out too much during the first semester.
Great for these types of students Its great if you plan to be involved at school. FIU is know mostly as a commuter university, but living on campus is great. If you can afford it I highly suggest it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors are really good. Just like in every school, you might cross a bad one. If you not learning is because you dont want to learn.
Am enjoying being here There is many clubs to join and activities. But this is a commuter school and sometimes it gets boring but the school is great and people are friendly.
Bang for the buck In comparison to most universities. FIU is affordable, anything cheaper than this are community colleges which are good too. But do your research and you'll find FIU is cheap. The dorms are worth the money too, they are almost brand new and big.
Great for these types of students FIU is great for everyone.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences FIU is a good university although for some majors class times can be hectic. There are a lot of clubs and activities available for the students, and if there isn't one then a new club could be made. There are plenty of places to study and to kick back and relax.
Tips for prospective students Avoid over-loading your schedule unless you intend on burning out early. Ask about the professors from current students or check them out online. Try to get a break between classes in order to have some study time and time to get to the class without having to run.
Academic Rigor It depends on the professor that is you have for the class. Some professors will beat every single subject to death, but will have the harder quizzes and tests. Other professors are pretty lax and you only need a vague understanding of the subject to pass. The integrity code at the school is enforced, meaning cheating and plagiarizing are treated with severely.
Dorm Life There are several dormitory choices and after freshman year the students can choose which housing they want to live in. The cheaper ones are more restrictive and don't have a stove so you have to get a meal plan. The more expensive ones are more like living in a rented apartment, no monitoring except just before you move out and come with almost all the amenities.
Food and Dining The on-campus food choices at FIU really aren't the best. It is mostly fast food. On the upside, there are a lot of places near FIU you could drive to and get a decent meal and most of them offer a student discount. If you plan on being on-campus only then Fresh Foods would be the best choice although it gets boring after a while.
What to do for fun There are a lot of things students could do for fun. There is the Game Room which allows the students to play on the Wii or Xbox 360, billiards, table tennis, and a lot of board games. There are movies for FIU students every Friday which are free admission.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences FIU has an great assortment of programs to fit every student's interest. Most of the professors are very helpful, and the campus life is always stimulating. I rate FIU a 7 out of 10.
Tips for prospective students To future panthers, don't get caught up in working a job...even if it is on campus if you do not need it. Try to focus as much as you can on your studies.
Academic Rigor The work load is pretty difficult if you let it become so. Trying to juggle academics and involvement is really the most difficult part. It can cost you your scholarships if you don't do it right.
Dorm Life Dorm life if really great. The only issue is the lack of maintenance for the A/C system. It is never cleaned and causes people to get sick.
Food and Dining Awesome choices overall. Fast food restaurants and a pretty healthy cafeteria.
What to do for fun The best thing to do for fun is to attend events thrown by the many councils at FIU. The Student Programming Council, the Black Student Union..they are all great events!
Bang for the buck You get a lot of bang for your buck. Free concerts, free planners, free t-shirts, free shoes, free pens, free....I could go on for at least two paragraphs.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The famous kissing bridge is located next to the Ryder business building. You can't miss it! It is light blue and crosses over a lake filled with turtles, ducks, and fish.
Great for these types of students If you like the outdoors, the Biscayne Bay Campus ropes and Kayaking course is definitely for you. Scaling walls 30 ft high, and going on a scavenger hunt through the mangroves!!! AWESOME!!!
Clubs and Activities Although the clubs and activities are abundant, there are major conflict between each organization. The don't all work together as a unit. Then again, because of their money pressures, they are not being influenced to do so either.
Greek Life The great life is SUPER active. However, the NPHC greeks are not very active on the campus at all.
Campus Safety Campus safety needs a lot of help. I don't feel very safe on campus. A woman who was very disoriented was able to walk on campus, into a building, and disturbed a rehearsal I was in once. Furthermore, there are a great deal of thefts which occur as well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences An intriguing, diverse, and understanding culture setting that is making many improvements at the moment to make sure every degree holds more value. FIU has so much energy and there is always something to do every minute of the day. It is great at facilitating involvement around campus and in the community as well as providing excellent job and internship opportunities.
Tips for prospective students If you do not care for a lot of construction, then maybe FIU is not for you right now as it is in a major development process. However, if you like high energy and a beautiful campus, then you definitely get that at FIU. Also, if you plan on commuting, take early classes so you can get there before the rush: getting to school at 10am or later means you will more than likely have trouble finding parking.
Academic Rigor Some classes you have to really work for an average grade and set out extra study time, but professors here are very understanding and accessible. It isn't an Ivy-league school but it is still a serious university that calculates GPA fairly like any other college.
Dorm Life FIU has beautiful, spacious dorms with excellent RAs. I found it was a real home and that I was comfortable with the community made there. I also was excited to join all the programs set up for residents; some academic-oriented, some just for fun. They also just started construction on an entirely new building.
Food and Dining We have a good cafeteria with a pretty good range of meal-plans to choose from. The other selections on campus are wonderful: we have everything from a Burger King to Sushi Maki and Chili's.
What to do for fun There are plenty of ways to get involved on campus, from Greek life to SGA. There are always events and giveaways around campus, and even performances from our theatre and music students.
Bang for the buck FIU is known to be one of the cheapest public universities in Florida and it definitely is affordable, besides the wide range of financial aid you can receive.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have three main traditions on campus: first is the Kissing Bridge which is a bridge that if you stand on it with your significant other and kiss you are supposed to be together forever. Second is The Cube which is an art piece that is rotatable. It is spun during midterms and finals after you study and it is supposed to give you good luck. Third is to not step on the seal embedded in the floor at the entrance of our student union building; if you step on it you will not graduate on time.
Clubs and Activities There is such a wide variety of clubs and organizations to join, some even take trips, like Alternative Breaks where you can volunteer around the world and it is very rewarding.
Greek Life Great range of social, multicultural, and academic fraternities and sororities that are very evident around campus because they are always putting on events/raising money for philanthropy, etc. However, there are only two houses on campus, both belonging to social fraternities, other than that, Greek life is not housed.
Campus Safety Police and security are always evident on campus and they are very friendly and approachable. We have call boxes all over and the phone alert system to let students know immediately when there are emergencies on campus. We also have the safety trams that work at night to shuttle students around in the dark.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The campus in continuing to expand and the financial aid office is very timely. A negative about this school is that there is no school spirit, which is important for a public university. Since it is a public institution, it depends on outside support, such as donations and alumni support, which is an area that FIU is lacking on.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with on campus activities your first semester to make your college experience more enjoyable.
Academic Rigor Many professors that I have taken so far are very helpful and answer emails in a very timely manner.
Dorm Life I have an apartment off-campus, so I can't give that great of an option on the dorm life. However, many students are commuters. It is becoming more popular for students to live on campus, and many students enjoy it.
Food and Dining Great selection.
What to do for fun There are always event going on both on and off-campus. When you are more involved with activities then you will hear more about what's going on. Everything is always reasonable price.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None.
Greek Life Very popular. Student involved in Greek life enjoy the campus experience even more. They show up to football games together wearing their letters. Seems to be very enjoyable.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The best choice and experience in my life. The Miami atmosphere provides a wide range of options and environments to partake in. While the small school provides a home like environment with many individual opportunities which would not be available in larger schools.
Tips for prospective students Do your research and if this school fits you then go for it, If it doesn't fit you still go for it since I thought it was not the school for me until I gave FIU a chance. You have to put in your all and you'll get out of it so much more than you ever thought you could.
Academic Rigor You have to work hard but its is completely up to you to pass a class. You just have to figure out how the professor teaches and how you learn.
Dorm Life Dorm life was amazing for me the only downside is that I lost focus in my school work, but if you can stay focused then it is really an amazing experience.
Food and Dining It has a lot of options and during finals week they give out free food in certain locations.
What to do for fun I hang out with my friends in school or I go out to the beach or to downtown. There are also several malls nearby.
Bang for the buck It is affordable and still gives you so much for what your paying.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a monument called The Cube in front of one of our buildings and it looks like a tilted all black Rubik Cube which you are able to spin. Its said that if you spin the cube 3 times right before a test you'll pass, and during finals week there is usually a line of students waiting to spin the cube.
Greek Life Amazing. I am going on my third year of being in a sorority and it was the best choice of my life. The organizations have such variety that you'll find where you belong in no time and the fact that the Greek community only makes up a small percentage of the student populations makes us a stronger community as a whole.
Campus Safety We have a police force that is available 24 hours along with desk assistants in the dorms that are available 24 hours along with safety trams so students can travel through campus safely at night.

Tips for prospective students Learn time management
Don't try to take too many classes if you're working full time
Slow and steady wins the race...if you have toAcademic Rigor I am currently majoring in Biology and I would say my classes so far have been pretty challenging but I have definitely learned a lot.
Dorm Life No experience
Food and Dining They have pretty good options, chills, subway, pollo tropical and much more.. the only negative is that they close early so if you have to go to school at night take a snack!
What to do for fun Go to the gym and enjoy all the events the school offers, specially the concerts!!!
Bang for the buck Good affordable school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many traditions...like spinning the cube before a test
Great for these types of students Great for any type of student, they have online classes and very flexible times.
Greek Life They are always doing something to get people involved and to help for our community.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences FIU is a pretty good school when it comes to student life and all that jazz. However, the class sizes are TOO big, there isn't enough parking for the amount of students this school enrolls, the professors don't help out as much as they can, and then advising center is ridiculous. They don't care about how many students are waiting to see them in the waiting room, they will take their sweet time to talk call you in and they take the longest lunch breaks.
Tips for prospective students If you're going to commute, do so with other people because parking is ridiculously difficult to find. Eat at home or outside of campus, food is too expensive and not worth the price. Make appointments whenever you need to see an adviser with time in advance, in the morning. Buy textbooks outside of school, the school bookstore charges way too much and buys them back for way too cheap.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Florida International University is a good school for commuters that live near or in the South Miami area. The school does not care about it's on-campus students and has overpriced housing costs. There are few teachers that care about teaching; most are solely there to weed out students and make them retake classes or get kicked out of their majors.
Tips for prospective students Use rate my professor and do not take classes lightly your first year because most UCC classes are forced to only have a specific amount of A's, B's, and C's. If your papers are not exceptional then the teacher may have to grade you lower than they would otherwise. The math classes, especially college algebra, have very high fail rates and you must work very hard to get a good grade. A lot of programs will not accept you into their majors if you receive lower than a C in their prerequisites, i.e. Nursing.
Academic Rigor Once you start classes in your major they become very difficult especially in any health program. For example the ZOO 3731 anatomy class is only taught by one professor who is extremely obnoxious and states on the first day that he teaches the class at the 5000 level and will weed people out. Meaning he makes it more difficult than necessary in order to fail students. Take your classes seriously.
Dorm Life There is little to no on-campus community due to everything closing early and the amount of students that live near the school. Hardly any money goes toward RHA to put on events for housing students because FIU is geared for commuters. Those who are forced to live on campus should have a car because they will not be able to get around at all or find things to do without leaving campus. Most people keep to themselves and will only stick with fraternities and sororities. Not a very friendly campus.
Food and Dining There are good options for food but I gave 2 stars because they are not open at appropriate hours for students living on campus. They close early on Saturdays and are all closed on Sundays except for two locations that have sub par food.
What to do for fun Everything is off campus. If you are not 21 you will not be able to get into clubs on South Beach, especially if you are a guy. You can try some places in Downtown Miami or Coconut Grove on certain nights but unless you are a girl or know promoters be ready to pay a decent amount for cover. Oleta River State Park is a nice place for kayaking and canoeing near the Biscayne Bay Campus. Another nice outdoor spot is Vizcaya Gardens near Coco Walk.
Campus Safety There are a lot of Police officers and they respond quickly but there are a lack of security cameras in many lots, especially the housing lots. There are problems of carjackings and such during the Dade County Youth Fair because many strangers are roaming the campus at a variety of hours.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The Campus is very well kept and everyone including most Professors and staff are friendly. One of the cheapest public universities.
Tips for prospective students Study study study..
Academic Rigor Most classes are easy, interesting and entertaining. Math though is an entire different story... You will find a couple of really good math professors but other than that math professors in this university and barely understandable
Dorm Life Dont live in one. But i stayed in one for orientation and it was nice and cozy, your typical dorms.
Food and Dining Many many delicious fast food restaurants, coffee joints, e.t.c to keep you satisfied
What to do for fun For fun you can always find posters for events happening on campus.
Bang for the buck Much cheaper than other public universities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the spinning of a cube that is said to bring good luck if you spin before a big test.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences FIU is a fun place to be especially since it is in Miami, Florida. You have a whole bunch of new exciting adventures waiting for you as soon as you walk on campus. It's also a big chance to meet foreign indiviuals and is helpful for you to learn the world around you.
Tips for prospective students If you want to go to FIU, make sure that you are open to different cultures because it is an Internationally school. Also make sure to be active and to visit the Library because it is one of the tallest study halls with seven levels.
Academic Rigor FIU's academic rigor is pretty competitive, it's not as big as University of Florida but it's not that easy to get into. It holds alot of Academies and holds one of the nicest Court Rooms I have seen.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. They have co-ed dorms which makes it fun and easier for people to meet. They also have apartment style dorms just in case you are the type of person who doesn't like to share showers with a lot of people. The Dorms are located close to the classes so it's not a far walk, and you are also allowed to have a car their as a freshman.
Food and Dining The food at FIU is great. When I visited, I seen a Chick-fil-a, a Subway, Chilli's, Burger King, Chinese Restaurants, and an all you can eat buffet that has healthy choices such as salads and soups.
Great for these types of students Students who are outgoing, open to new things and meeting new people, and people who love Miami!
Clubs and Activities They have a lot of intramural sports where you can meet people. They have a great acting program where the students go around campus and practice and shoot scenes.

It is a very diverse school, and you mean people from all walks of life there. F.I.U. will greatly influence your life, and it's up to you to make that influence a positive one.
Tips for prospective students Come in with an open mind. Leave with a panther imprint on it. You will meet a lot of great people and learn a lot of new things at F.I.U. Just be open-minded and ready to face it all and you'll be fine. Use the facilities. The library is really good. Get to know your professors. You'll survive.
Academic Rigor I'm not going to say that the classes are super hard because college is meant to prepare you for the real world so work is expected. It's doable.
Dorm Life Overall I will give it 4 out of 5. But depending on where you go, it can range from 3-5.
Food and Dining On-campus food and dining is better at the South Campus than at the North Campus, because South is bigger and it has a wider variety. However the food and dining surrounding the campus is pretty good and quite close to the school.
What to do for fun There are many organizations and clubs that you can join and there's always something happening on campus. There's also the recreational facilities (soccer field, basketball court, pool, etc)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is this spinning art-piece next to the Deuxieme Maison (DM) building that is said to being you good luck on your exams if you spin it before.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Florida International University might not have the best professors. Furthermore it lacks the big name and fame of other Universities. However it makes me feel comfortable and attending to this University is enjoyable.
Tips for prospective students If you have the chance or money to attend to a better college by all means do so, but if you are broke don't be afraid to go to FIU, you'll have fun.
Academic Rigor Rigor wise is what I was expecting college to be, not too hard but more involved. Unlike Miami-Dade College, which was a total joke and any person could pass a class with their eyes closed

Food and Dining A lot of variety to choose from.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences FIU was a truly great experience, ranging from a beautiful campus and lively city to an amazing ability to infiltrate knowledge and action. Eccentric characters may be found all through campus; not just in the student body, but faculty and staff as well. I am thrilled to be considered an FIU Alumni!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you save your prospective classes in your planner. This way when your enrollment date comes around you can immediately see if the classes are still open and more rapidly register. Try to be as organized as possible and keep record of all your transactions with the school; this way you avoid any complications or running around in circles trying to get things done by a deadline.
Academic Rigor It honestly depends on what kind of student you are. Some classes you need to go to, sit, and listen; while others you can read the book and pay attention to the powerpoint presentations.
Dorm Life According to friends that have lived both in dorms and outside of dorms; dorm life never had a dull moment!
Food and Dining Great options all over campus. From healthy and delicious to all around guilty pleasures! I personally enjoyed Moe's and Pollo Tropical the most.
What to do for fun The beach is never too far, but if you need to stay on campus be near the GC Pit. You will always find some sort of entertainment activity going on.
Bang for the buck Find your bang for the buck by going to restaurants near by. FIU Main Campus is surrounded by great little holes in the walls, reachable by car, bike, or foot. Also, don't bother getting a gym membership; the FIU gym is great and included in your tuition!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Never step on the FIU emblems located on the floor in the entry way to campus via the Gold and Blue Parking garages; it is considered bad luck. Keep your eyes open for the annual Walk Across Water architecture student project; really quite humorous!
Great for these types of students Great school for any kind of student!
Clubs and Activities A great variety of clubs and activities, from study and major oriented to hobby based. Get involved!
Greek Life Tons of fraternities and sororities and not just the traditional kind! A multitude of different academic fraternities to help you integrate with your student body and further your ideas and networking abilities within your career path!

Food and Dining The food is good. They have many local restaurants right on campus for your convenience. All restaurants are within walking distance. There Chilis is the best.
What to do for fun There are many activities that students can partake in the Graham Center. They usually have competitions throughout the day and dance shows that people can watch.
Bang for the buck FIU definitely has many great things to offer, from academics to the social aspect. The advisors are the best and can help you get through anything. Many people are always willing to help, you just have to ask.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Depending on the individuals major, FIU can be a great institution. Filled with research opportunities and many resources being located in one of the most international cities FIU offers a multi-cultural experience for students who are not used to Miami's diversity. Arts and Sciences majors recommended.
Tips for prospective students Be open to interacting with individuals from many different cultural backgrounds. Stay on top of the administrative aspects of your education, FIU has a amazing professors but lacks in administrative competence.
Academic Rigor This is of course depending on the major, course taken, and specific professors. FIU is not extremely rigorous in terms of academic requirements. However, there are some professors that are infamous for being more difficult than the rest.
Dorm Life The drom rooms are extremely cozy and are well kept for the most part, Depending upon what one is interested in both financially and personally, upon completion of ones Freshman year there are an array of options to chose from, from studio style dorms to apartment style. One must keep in mind that FIU is a commuter school, meaning that most of the student body does NOT live on campus.

What to do for fun There are many things to do for fun, especially in the Miami area, which is known for its night life. FIU is conveniently located on the infamous 8th street, or Calle Ocho. Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It's a pretty good school in all. There is no bad program; all areas of study are proficient. The only thing is, if you want a small school feel, this is DEFINITELY not it. Try Spring Hill College in Alabama.
Tips for prospective students STAY. ON. TASK!
Academic Rigor It really depends on your program. Obviously, a major in history will have a different course load from a pre-med.
Dorm Life I'm living at home with my parents, but from what I've heard, not bad at all. BEen there before though. As with all dorms, rooms are pretty small, and similar. It's pretty safe. You need a key to get in the building, get into your common room, and get into your own room. Locked up tight.
Food and Dining You kind of get tired of the same things all the time. There's a Dunkin' Doughnuts, Papa Johns, Freshens (yogurt place), Moe's, Chick-fil-a, Salad Creations (delicious and healthy!), Subway, Einstien's Bagels, two Starbucks, a Jamba Juice, Burger King, Chili's, Pollo Tropical, and a sprinkling of consetion stands. THere's also the off campus choices, but I'm not gonna go into that.
What to do for fun Party. DON'T do drugs. Hang out with friends. Also, the University itself hosts some pretty fun events too, so those are awesome.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are some trees outside the library that are fun to climb as well as sit under. :)
Great for these types of students It's great for people who know where they're going and what they want to do with their lives. Also good for people who want to experience life, and willing to try different things. Good for people who are trying to find themselves.
Greek Life I'm NOT into that at all, so can't tell you w/o being biased.
Campus Safety PRetty good. You're not constantly watching your back unless you've got something to worrry about. There are safety shuttles to take you to your car at night too. Just save the # on your cell and call when you need them.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The last three years and a half at Florida International University has been a negative experience. The professors have no sense of time and its quite common to sit in class for 35 minutes to an hour wondering if the professor is going to show up. There are many occasions in which class is cancelled but students are not notified until 3 to 4 hours later. The University pushes for you to sign up for more loans as opposed to making more grants and scholarship opportunities available. Overall its best to say that 95 percent of the professor don't care about their positions while the other 5 percents do.
Tips for prospective students The best tip I can offer prospective students is to visit the campus a few times before signing up for enrollment and if possible get permission to set in on a few lectures.
Academic Rigor The academics at this particular University is rigorous, in order to pass you will have to put in a tremendous amount of hours in studying and teaching yourself.
Dorm Life Plain and full of rules is best to explain the dorm life on campus.
Food and Dining The dining is good, there are a variation of restaurant choices on campus.
What to do for fun There is nothing fun on campus, everyone pretty much just go to class and then go home or back to their dorms.
Bang for the buck You pay a lot your education but you get nothing in return except a lot of stress and fustration.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At the South Campus their is a huge cube, if you spin it in a full rotation it is said that you will pass your finals.
Great for these types of students Students that live close to campus and don't mind professors not showing up to class would have a great experience at FIU.
Clubs and Activities There are not much activities planned throughout the semesters.
Greek Life The Greek Life is not of the norm.
Campus Safety The campus is pretty safe.

Tips for prospective students pick your classes as early as possible. pick your professors as early as possible.
Academic Rigor some professors there have an accent so its a little difficult to understand them. the work is pretty fair as to what you have to do in order to get an a, but there are so professors who require more work than others so pick your professors wisely.
Dorm Life i don't live in the dorm but i have friends who do and they love it there.
Food and Dining i love all the restaurants fiu has to offer and there's even a buffet you can eat too. the only thing that could make it better is if they had a taco bell one campus but there is one across the street from fiu so that'd have to do.
What to do for fun there are usually events happening in the gc building and the sga usually does stuff too. other than that try joining a club to meet new people. there's also a game room with pool tables and foosball.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus they have this seal on the front floor in one of the main builds and if you step on it you won't graduate on time so everybody walks around the seal.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences florida international university is a commuter university with a wide variety of diverse people. campus is always buzzing with something to do and being active on campus is a great way to meet new people. quality professors but the classes are too big (usually auditorium).
Tips for prospective students study hard and try not to deviate from your intended goals; it's very easy to choose partying in frat house over studying but parties won't help you out in the long run. participate in class discussions in order to get noticed by your professors (you'll want to ask them for letters of recommendation later on). take the free, on-site practice gre tests in order to see where you stand. make friends in all your classes so that you can network in the future.
Academic Rigor the classes usually consist of tests, though some classes have other requirements such as papers, community service, and attendance grades. the actual content of many of the courses is not difficult, it just requires studying. science based classes are the hardest classes to take (but that's true for any university). study hard and your grades will reflect your hard work.
Dorm Life though i personally have not lived on campus, i have plenty of friends who have done so. the dorms usually have shared bathrooms but it is manageable. you can choose to have a roommate or choose to live by yourself (though it is more expensive). dorms are always brewing some sort of fun activity - usually parties. all sorts of people live in the dorms and it is a great way to meet new people. the rooms are a bit small but livable. living on campus is just a few minutes away from all of your classes.
Food and Dining there is a wide variety of delectable foods available on campus; from moe's mexican grill to chili's to burger king to subway to chick-fil-a to dunkin donuts - you will never get tired of the food being offered. more commonly used by people who live on campus is fresh food buffet which has a different sort of buffet every day (american food days, spanish food days, mexican food days). prices are a few cents over the price outside of campus which is the only downside. also, the lines during lunch-time are unbearable so eat before or after noon!
What to do for fun living in miami, there is always something fun going on. if you don't want to leave campus, frat and sorority houses are always throwing some sort of party. people living in dorms are known to have get togethers and parties. also, on friday nights, movies are shown in school. if you want to leave campus, there is a wide variety of things to do - miami beach, movie theaters, clubs, parties, bars, etc. and unlike other cities, miami stays open all night.
Bang for the buck fiu is a great school because of its professors and the classes being offered. it is especially a good school if you live in miami because you won't have to pay for living or for out-of-state tuition. each credit is approximately $177 which isn't as pricey as other universities and they offer plenty of financial aid, scholarships, and grants if financial need is evident.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a kissing bridge located in the center of campus - supposedly, if you kiss a person on this bride, you will be with them for the rest of your life. if you no longer want to be with them, you'll have to knock them over the bridge in order to get them out of your life.
Clubs and Activities clubs and activities are a fun way to meet new people, especially if you're new to the school. there is a huge variety of different sorts of clubs, from honors societies to fraternities/sororities to social clubs. these clubs offer many scholarships, if needed, and a chance to get involved in the community in order to help the less fortunate. clubs are a great addition to your resume and i highly recommend them!
Campus Safety campus safety is always reliable; security is constantly monitoring the campus and driving around in golf carts in case anyone needs a ride to their car late at night. there are always people around and i have honestly never felt unsafe on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences florida international university is the perfect size- it’s big enough to have a community feel but small enough that it is easy to get involved and make friends. fiu really embraces that it is a new university that keeps on expanding on their modern and eclectic building architecture reflects that. the student body is incredibly diverse and there is a definite celebration of cultural diversity.
Tips for prospective students for prospective students, i recommend that you get involved in anything that you can let it be greek life, clubs, organizations and or philanthropy. as you begin choosing classes make sure to use both rate my professor and myedu.com for your choice in professor would be better. make sure that if you schedule a class after 9:30am you give yourself plenty of time to find parking because the garages get packed really quickly.
Academic Rigor
the academic rigor for fiu all depends upon your major. writing courses and mathematics courses are mainly the same for every major. all the other classes depend on if you are a science major or non science major. the reason many people do not do well is because of the accent of the professor. but all you have to do is choose your classes according to your liking.Dorm Life the dorm life at fiu is really nice. not only does fiu have dorms but also as apartments. each dorm has a check in desk where all visitors must check in. all the dorms are located in the same area of the campus near the football stadium and gym. some dorms have 4 rooms with a kitchen and bathroom. it feels like you live in your own personal house.
Food and Dining
fiu has a plethora of food places around campus. in the graham center you have the “food court” which has a burger king, pollo tropical, sushi maki, chili’s too go, einstein bagel, jamba juice, subway’s, fresh foods and bustelo’s café. there is also a starbucks on the second floor of the bookstore and a market called recharge-u. in the green library there is a starbucks and a convenient store in the back. in the pg-5 market station/ parking garage there is a dunkin’ donuts, chik-a-fil, papa johns, moe’s, and salad creation. by the dorms there is another convenient store called the breezeway. in the gym there is a restaurant called tropical smoothie café which is one of the healthiest locations. What to do for fun there is plenty of activities, clubs, and organizations around campus that can keep you occupied. joining a fraternity or sorority is one way to have fun around campus. taking classes at the gym or just going to the gym in itself is fun. playing an intramural sport with friends is another great activity. joining dance marathon is both a fun and emotional experience. you dance for 25 hours in honor of the kids in the hospitals that cannot pay for their own surgery. you can join clubs or even just walking around campus is a journey in itself.
Bang for the buck not really the best school for bang for the buck. fiu charges many fees but it is worth it since it students get free stuff.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus fiu has three superstitions. the first superstition is the seal in front of the graham center. legend has it that if you step on the seal you will not graduate on time or at all. the only way to reverse the curse is to walk backwards around the seal 3 times. the second superstition has to do with the cube in transformers. fiu has its own cube located in front of dexiueme maison. legend says that 24 hours before an exam student come and spin this cube clockwise for luck but it will not work if you do not study. the final superstition is the kissing bridge. this bridge is located behind the green library. this bridge is over two lakes which look like a heart. legend is that you take the love of your life and kiss them on the bridge you will be together forever.

Food and Dining florida international university has got to have the greatest selection of food on campus. throughout the campus you can find varieties of restaurants, coffee shops and fast food restaurants. it almost feels like a food court at a shopping mall.
What to do for fun campus life at fiu never gets boring. there are millions of organizations to chose from to participate as well as activities all year round. homecoming concerts, gym, fitness classes, pageants and many more.
Bang for the buck as far as tuition, for instate students it is really cheap considering the knowledge gained for a lifetime. there are also thousands of scholarships that the university offers for those in financial need.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus fiu is surrounded by tradition. for example, the trail of the torch is done every year at the beginning of the fall semester in which it is a walk around the main campus to finally light up the fiu torch in symbol of a new year.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Florida International University is a very great University. Campus Life is always filled with wonderful events and activities. There are countless professional opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Have a solid score on your SAT or ACT for entry into the University and mantain a 3.0 or higher during your highschool to be eligible for scholarships and admittance into the university.
Academic Rigor I seek academic excellence at every point in my education, although some classes are very difficult, I push forth to achieve my goal.
Dorm Life During orientation I stayed in the dorms for two days and knew that dorm life was not for me.
Food and Dining Food and dining in the University is delicious. There are new food court facilities in different areas of the University. There is great choices and variety of food.
What to do for fun I like to play in various musical ensembles for fun and also attend football games, volleyball games, and basketball games.
Bang for the buck Tuition is reasonably priced and affordable for me. I pay for my school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The trail of torch is during the homecoming game/ parade and festivities. It is the symbol of success and achievement.
Great for these types of students FIU is for spirited and international students.
Clubs and Activities Greek Life and academic organizations are great for everyone.
Greek Life The Greek BBQ is really delicious!
Campus Safety FIU Police is active not only on campus grounds but they protect the school from neighborhood and community criminal attempts.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Florida International University is an amazing university, especially for students who are serious and focused on their studies. FIU is not much of a party school but the Student Life organization here make it their priority to make the students feel welcomed and valued. FIU is the perfect balance of hard work and relaxation for an ideal college student.
Tips for prospective students If you have a professor who uses their textbook frequently in class, READ IT! There is no faster way to fail in this university than not doing the reading assignments or cramming the night before a major test. If you network with people of all kinds, read, and study in advance, passing will be a breeze.
Academic Rigor If I could, I would rate FIU's academic rigor as a 3.5. Yes, the coursework can be hefty for some classes, but from my experience, if you study ahead of time and pay attention in class the work will be much easier.
Dorm Life Although there is always room for improvement, I must say that I truly enjoy the dorm life here. As a matter of fact, I am the VP of Promotions in the Housing Unit at the Biscayne Bay Campus location. The dorm life here is easy-going with many warm personalities and welcoming activities. It is also pretty quiet here which I love; it is very similar to real apartment-style living.
Food and Dining To be honest, the last-time I checked I did not enjoy the food at the food court of this campus. I've heard that the South Campus's food is great but the cost of the food at this campus does not match up with the variety, portion size, or taste of it.
What to do for fun There are many activities to do here at FIU. You can join the Student Alumni Association to get extra perks when special events occur such as a free t-shirt or extra food. For the first week of each term, there is lots of food, games and activities going on in Panther Square. If you need to get in shape, there is a gym on campus. Students can go kayaking, get massages, go swimming, play pool (only for dorm-residents) and do much more.
Bang for the buck I believe the price of attending FIU is close to its worth. I do wish that we did not have to pay for laundry (dorm-residents) or for the shuttle that travels students from one campus to the other. However, the gym, massages, special events, and kayaking are all included in our tuition fees. I would recommend the bookstore as a last-resort for purchasing anything, it's too costly!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I cannot think of anything except for the playful raccoons that come out at night that students like to watch.
Great for these types of students Florida International University is great for students who:
-Are not big on college parties but take their studies seriously
-Love nature
-Majoring in Journalism, Hospitality, Education, International Studies, and Business.Clubs and Activities As mentioned before, there are many activities on campus to do. As far as clubs, there are many from the Kayaking Club to clubs such as the Impact: Christian Fellowship Club.
Campus Safety FIU has its own public safety unit on-campus. You can always count on seeing at least two to three police units on-sight.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot They have some great teachers for certain courses, while they have others that are not as great. In some courses I have learned a significant amount of information while in others I have had to teach myself just to do well in the course.
Am enjoying being here Over the years I have enjoyed the Modesto Campus. I enjoy the Graham Center and all the school has to offer in regards to campus life.
Bang for the buck In comparison to other public state institutions, FIU has had decent costs in regards to tuition. When taking a full-time course load, it may prove steep especially for those who pay for school on their own.
Tips for prospective students When enrolling in classes be sure to visit websites such as, ratemyprofessor.com to verify that the professor you are choosing for the course you are taking is a decent one. This website proved helpful when taking math courses and trying to avoid the professors that did not speak English clearly.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a Biology major in the Honors Program here and I'm very satisfied with most of my classes.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy the school and the environment. The campus life here is probably at the same level as many big name schools. The problem I have is the overwhelming amount of spaces for some classes which cause you to hvae to wait a semester because of the enrollment dates. What happens is that sometimes 3rd, 4th, or 5th year students will fill up classes like Chemistry 2 or Biology 2 causing you to have to wait semesters to take the class. I had to wait until summer to take my first Chemistry class. Luckily, in the Honors College you get priority registration.
Bang for the buck Definitely the best buy in the state. The room & board may be a little bit pricier than the surrounding area, but these dorms are very much better than the traditional dorms in most colleges.
Tips for prospective students If you plan on pursuing a science major, be prepared! FIU prides itself on its bell curve which will obviously weed out the slackers. You'll have friends who may have easier that are breezing by, but you have to remain determined. I would suggest buying a car if you are from out of town because you will have to drive on several occasions. I cherished my on-campus living experience and I recommend it to all entering freshman.
Great for these types of students Fast-paced, diverse, hard-working students who can deal with no snow, ever! There are infinite opportunities to get involved. No worries if you plan on commuting or living on campus. The experience is exciting.

Am enjoying being here I love it at FIU. Unlike other universities in the state of Florida, Florida International University is engulfed diversity, and there's always plenty of activities throughout each semester.
Bang for the buck FIU would have to be the most cost efficient University in the State of Florida. If i were anywhere else, I'd probably get charged an arm and a leg for tuition

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot it really depends on what you want to major in if you go to fiu. the honors college (which is its own seminar and small group discussion; there is no honors chemistry or the sort) is beyond worth it if you apply and get in. students coming to have their eyes opened to the world are better off at a liberal arts institution- fiu is really for real-world students who want to immerse in a career field.
Am enjoying being here i am a commuter student, so naturally it's awkward only coming to school for class. there are so many events going on all the time, it's a little overwhelming just being in the student center during the middle of the day. but the energy on campus is exciting- golden panthers have the biggest and best school spirit.
Bang for the buck tuition is amongst the lowest in florida. and there are some pretty awesome professors!
Tips for prospective students apply for as many merit scholarships as you can. decide if you want to be at the main campus or tinier, further away biscayne bay campus. tour the campus first and make sure you're aware miami isn't a typical college town. fiu itself feels like a mall with a school attached, and it's at the tail end of calle ocho but in the middle of a lower-class neighborhood. you need either a car or to learn the metro bus system (hello, bus pass!) if you want to get off campus. learn a bit of spanish and be willing to learn a lot about other cultures. fiu isn't for the close-minded.
Great for these types of students high-energy, type-a, organized, focused and committed students

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This school is pretty good. The professors know what they are teaching and there are professors for every level of student, whether you want a teacher that is challenging or not. You get professors from multiple parts of the world that leads to learning about more than just the class you signed up for.
Am enjoying being here There's a lot of things to do which means you can always keep yourself entertained. There are frats and sororities, a recreation center, all kinds of foods, clubs, and so much more.
Bang for the buck If you don't have to pay much then it may be the best decision/investment you'll make. So many things to do and so many things that will help you in the future.
Tips for prospective students Be willing to put time aside to study and make sure you stay on top of things. University is very different from high school. But if you know how to juggle your time, I assure you that you'll love this place.

Bang for the buck One of the cheapest schools in the nation, while providing excellent education. Coming here was a choice that I will never regret. FIU <3

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've only been at Florida International University (FIU) for a semester and I took pretty easy classes, so I didn't really learn that much. How much you learn really depends on the courses you take, the teachers you have, and how much you read/ study for that course, however.
Am enjoying being here FIU is a nice campus and it is very big, but I don't enjoy being here. There isn't much to do on campus, unless you join a club or organization. There are a lot of international students, which is cool because you get to meet a wide variety of different people. However, most of the people that go to this school are from Miami or the surrounding area and go home on the weekend so the campus is really boring during the weekend.
Bang for the buck I am an out of state student so the cost of tuition is much higher. I wouldn't really consider it a bang for the buck because I am not really involved in the school activities. If you do get involved in all FIU has to offer then it really can be a bang for the buck.
Tips for prospective students FIU is located in Miami, so there are plenty of things to do off campus. However, I feel that in order to enjoy being at FIU you have to get involved in either a club or organization. I would advise that if you plan on going to or transferring to FIU do so during the fall semester because they have more activities on campus and all of the big sports events, like football, happen during that time. Also college is about meeting new people and making new friends, so I would advise you to meet as many people as you can because it makes college so much better.
Great for these types of students FIU is great for people who are independent and who like to get involved in on campus activities. It is also a great place for students who like to party, being that it is in Miami, but also know how to balance that with school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers here are really good! You run into a few that are difficult, but that's everywhere. Also, being in Miami, there is so much more to learn outside the classroom than in. The culture here is so rich and it makes the perfect learning environment.
Am enjoying being here I love it here! There is so much to do both at school and just in Miami in general. There are sooo many clubs and activities. There is truly something for everyone! The school spirit is most definitely rising especially since we are the Sun-Belt champions in football.
Bang for the buck I believe we have one of, if not the lowest tuitions in Florida. It is very affordable to go here and the only thing that gets expensive is the housing. There are sooo many free activities that go on every week! One of the best is the annual concert where we have had guests come like Ludacris, Kid Cudi, Pit Bull, and we are having John Legend come this year.
Tips for prospective students Come in with an open mind and expect to have fun! The campus is big and you should always try to find at least one thing to get involved with.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently a rising Sophomore so I've only really taken Freshmen courses. However, I didn't seem to learn anything. I often found myself not attending classes that weren't attendance-based and uninterested in general. Nonetheless, this does not mean the teachers were bad, there are some wonderful teachers there who clearly enjoy their job and want you to learn. Make sure you ask around what teachers are better for what class as many times you get international teachers with thick accents that are difficult to understand and don't repeat things.
Am enjoying being here FIU is an awesome college to go to, but if you're living on campus you have to remember it is one of the biggest commuter schools in the US so it WILL get empty during weekends. Make sure you learn how to take the bus or have friends with cars who will take you out on weekends or you will get bored. That aside, the school is always having events and if you get involved you will love every minute of it. The facilities are great and people are very enthusiastic, not to mention you are in Miami.
Bang for the buck Being an in-state student and attending is fabulous, but if you are out of state or international it is a bit ridiculously priced. The Financial Aid office, however, will help you if you need anything and have a board outside of its office with available scholarships.
Tips for prospective students If you are in the applying process or doing your enrollment paperwork and have questions don't hesitate in using the online chat tool. It is awesome and you get an automatic response. Remember this is a huge school so when choosing classes be on your computer before it's time to enroll and choose in order of priority! Try to be involved as it will make school more enjoyable, and remember to ask around about professors. Try to avoid the cafeteria food if you don't have a meal plan, make sure you ask if it's good or bad that day because it varies. Last but not least, have some school spirit!
Great for these types of students Outgoing, into business, hospitality, nursing, want to be downtown but not attend an extremely overpriced school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot After two semesters attending FIU, I can honestly say my classes have been great, the teachers really helpful, and I've learned a lot from them. Of course, there are always classes with bad teachers you can barely understand or barely learn anything from, but I have yet to run into that. Maybe in the future I will, but from my experience thus far, it's been really great and I have learned a great deal.
Am enjoying being here At first, I wasn't sure going to a college in my hometown would be all that great. I wanted to get away desperately. However, after my first year, I love it. The people are very accepting and friendly (of course, there are always exceptions), the classes are great, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the events are fun. My time at FIU thus far has been wonderful and I've loved it so far.
Bang for the buck FIU offers many scholarships for both those with a financial need and those that don't. I myself received a $10,000 scholarship for all four years based on my GPA from high school alone and Bright Futures helps a great deal. It is because of the scholarship I received that I am able to attend this college for I would not be able to afford the tuition otherwise. I have heard, however, from many people that financial aid gets messed up sometimes and it gets frustrating and the financial aid office makes a lot of mistakes, but I have not run into this problem as of yet.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you keep a good balance between school work and a social life. Get involved in clubs or attend activities, but don't let any of that affect your work. Study hard, don't procrastinate, take advantage of the library and quiet study areas. It's easy to fall behind in your first year because of how new and different and exciting everything is, but keep organized and on top of your work. Also, always keep your syllabus - some teachers will never remind you of assignments or tests and they are ALL in the syllabus.
Great for these types of students Open-minded, organized, hard-working and determined students will do the best here. There are all sorts of people and all sorts of things to do, so being organized and hard-working is necessary to do well while still being able to take full advantage of what is offered here.

Will enjoy being here The campus is huge and really nice, and the people are great!
Bang for the buck The school is expensive, but for everyone the situation is different.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to keep your GPA and SAT/ACT scores really high. Also, get involved! The more extracurriculars and activities you have the more chances you have of being accepted here and in any other college.
Great for these types of students Great for students who love meeting new people, especially people from Miami who love the sun and having fun.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although this school has unfortunately gotten the reputation of a safety school or last choice, FIU has without a doubt flourished into one of the most enriching learning institutions in the nation. The university has a lot to offer, not only to its students, but to the community as well by providing its students with partnered internships with the city of Sweetwater/Miami, volunteering opportunities at nearby elementary schools, as well as hosting games and countless events for nearby high schools. FIU does not only promote in class learning but rather advocates active engagement in the community regardless of your field of study, so what you learn doesn’t stay in the classroom. FIU also has a superb teaching staff composed of dedicated and highly educated individuals who seek the most efficient way to present the class material in a wide range of courses available to the students.
Am enjoying being here FIU was certainly not my first choice, but I'm glad it was my final choice. The school's atmosphere is lively, energetic and diversity-filled, and the campus itself is beautiful. The school has a very modern feel to it while still conserving a natural landscape feel. Walking around campus is surely as breathtaking and soothing as a walk in the park. The broad array of clubs and organizations available to the students is incredible and a quite promising way of meeting other young and energetic people with similar passions. In addition, everything you could possibly need (or want) is available right on campus, without having to drive anywhere, which is a convenient feature for most commuter students exasperated by the idea of driving around Miami. FIU also contains the largest art display compared to other Florida universities, making it one of the most enjoyable places to visit. FIU has surely progressed from being just an ordinary school to sooner or later becoming one of Miami’s most prominent landmarks.
Bang for the buck While tuition does not cease to increase overtime, at FIU you get your money’s worth of learning while still living at the comfort of your own home (which is generally the case since FIU is primarily a commuter school). The university also provides extremely convenient financial aid packages as well as yearly scholarship competitions, and by doing so, giving its students an opportunity to pursue their careers without much worry.
Tips for prospective students FIU constantly hosts entertaining activities and events, but the school does not neglect its students’ academic performance and their need to succeed in any way. There are various free (or better said, included in your tuition) programs, study groups, and seminars aimed at reinforcing class material. These are very valuable tools that students should definitely take advantage of. Being a college student encompasses a great responsibility and dedication.
Great for these types of students Students pursuing a business or nursing degree are definitely promised rewarding results here at FIU - that is if they do not switch their majors! Business and nursing are FIU's strongest and most competitive programs, but simultaneously worth the while.

Will enjoy being here You will enjoy being here i personally visited the school and loved it, it is well kept and beautiful.
Bang for the buck If you are just going to any college just because of money than what is the point in going. go to college not because of the money but go to help with your learning, you want to major in a field that you love not something just for money.
Tips for prospective students Visit the Campus to meet your advisers, new friends and the campus it self.

Am enjoying being here Living on campus has got to be the worst decision I have ever made. Room/Board is way overly priced and there in no campus life after 7pm. You better have a car or make lots and lots of friends.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I love going to FIU. I'm studying Meteorology here, and it truly is a great school. Some of the math professors however are disinterested in teaching, and a good math professor is hard to come by, but overall the school is organized and fascinating.
Am enjoying being here There is ALWAYS something going on at FIU. Whether you study at Modesto Maidique Campus or Biscayne Bay Campus, SPC always has events planned at either campus. It makes going to class fun and interesting.
Bang for the buck Tuition has gone up a bit in the two years I've attended here, but it is more or less reasonably priced. The extra fees are a bit much, but otherwise it is a good school financially.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Professors help you as much as possible, they are very qualified to teach the material and have the proper experience. They teach you not only from the textbook but also from what they experienced in the real world. Attend classes and spend some time during the week studying and then the material from all your intended major classes will connect together.
Am enjoying being here Not only are the classes great but the campus is big. There are many things to do on campus, from eating at all the different types of restaurants, to attending the computer lab, or even studying in the library.
Bang for the buck You attend classes with qualified professors but as you walk around campus, you will see construction to accommodate all the students and provide a specialized learning experience for each major.
Tips for prospective students Don't be shy, there will be many new students that won't know anyone. Talk to them. Also attend many of the activities available, like concerts and comedy shows! They are great and fun!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers at this university make it a MUST to pay attention, attend class, and take notes as well as study in order to receive a passing grade. They are always open to setting up a meeting for their office hours to discuss grades and material covered in class.
Am enjoying being here The extra curricular activities offered are many outstanding opportunities. Almost everything has a club and if it does not, creating one's own club is not a hassle. There are opportunities to have study sessions as well as club events and parties. This school focuses on education as well as enjoyment.
Bang for the buck Not entirely sure what this means but I assume it is regarding the financial status of the college.
Tips for prospective students Don't let personal downfalls distract your on your education. Stay alert on assignments and their due dates. Do not be afraid to ask the teacher for any help. After all thats what they are their for. :)
