Because it's such a small school, the classes are small and the teachers really care and make an effort to get to know you. This is a great school that gives you as much as you put into it, and the small class sizes and caring teachers really make a difference. Class offerings are substancial and help is always available.

    Am enjoying being here

This is a college that is a segway for most students, as it has a high transfer rate. Knowing this, classes are geared towards helping students prepare for transfer and to make sure they are taking classes they need.

    Bang for the buck

Very affordable! 20 dollars a credit? You can't get much cheaper than that. And the classes are small, friendly, and organized. You will get a great education, more than value for your money.

    Tips for prospective students

If you don't have a lot of financial options, or aren't quite ready to attend a four year univeristy, this is a great option. You can get your general education out of the way for a fraction of the cost at four year schools, and the college has transfer agreements with many colleges in the area. Very transfer oriented for a community college, and the teachers expect students to work hard and learn. This will prepare you for a four year college without hurting your wallet. If you want to be lazy, this isn't a college for you, but if you want to complete your GE for as little money and as quickly as possible, you will do well here.

Great for these types of students

Not ready/unable to move away from home.
    Limited financial resources
Want to get GE out of the way before transferring.

Learning is a personal experience and what you take is directly correlated with what you put into it. The class sizes at Folsom Lake College are relatively small – definitely smaller than what you would find at the CSU’s or UC’s. This is a big benefit for those students who thrive on personal one on one interaction with the professor. If you get past the negative stereotype that is associated with community college, you will find professors that are not only willing to use their expertise to help you with problems, but that want to help you. People seem to forget that the main purpose of a community college is so that students who could not go to a CSU or an UC for whatever reason, be that due to academic or financial issues, would be able to seamlessly transfer into one of those institutions. So even though there are more remedial classes than there are transfer classes, there are dedicated students that attend Folsom Lake College so that they can go anywhere from UC Berkeley or to the more local Sac State. Therefore, if you put in the effort and really apply yourself, you will truly learn a lot more than you think you will.

    Am enjoying being here

Folsom Lake College could definitely not be considered a party college in any way, shape or form. However, what FLC has to offer is a true state-of-the-art campus. Everything on campus is new and in top form, so that is a huge advantage for students attending this school. Transferring students is a big priority for the staff here on campus, so that makes me appreciate them and their efforts as someone who is looking to transfer to UC San Diego, a highly competitive school. FLC is a very safe campus, located in a suburban community so although it is quiet, you can easily find something to do to occupy your time whether that be through volunteering or other means. Sacramento and other large cities are also in a close proximity, so one can never truly be bored with many places to go to such a short distance away.

    Bang for the buck

When it comes to getting your bang for the buck, nothing could apply more to this than community college. At Folsom Lake College, it is $26 per unit so for a full time student, someone who is enrolled in at least 12 units, it comes to $624 for both the fall and spring semester. At a CSU or an UC, it costs more than triple the amount for a year of attendance, so Folsom Lake College is a good way to save money if transferring to a 4-year university is in your future. With the economy in dire straights at the moment, families are doing everything they can to send their children to college, so if finances are the number one factor in considering which college to attend, going to FLC or any other community college is a very good choice.

What also contributes to getting your bang for your buck is TAG, the Transfer Admission Guarantee program that they have at all community colleges, so Folsom Lake College is included. Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz are the seven UC campuses that offer this program and it is a great way to take some of the anxiety off your chest. If you do decide to do this program, you would be getting your lower division general education requirements out of the way, be saving money while taking those classes, and have guaranteed admission to any one of those exceptional colleges as long as you fulfill all of the requirements.

is campus is also a part of the Los Rios Community College District, so there are four accredited colleges that you can attend, FLC being one of the four. Since these four colleges are part of the same district, it is easier for you to take classes at one college and have those credits recognized by another college in the same district which takes away the stress of wondering if these credits will count or not – therefore this is also another way that FLC gives you your bang for your buck.

    Tips for prospective students

One thing that I would urge prospective students to do is to watch deadlines like a hawk and do everything as early as possible. With the state budget being late and education being a lower priority than it should be, competition for a seat in any class is tough. So if you have even the slightest notion that you are going to attend this campus, get done with your assessment test early and speak with a counselor as soon as possible.

Great for these types of students

Folsom Lake College is a great campus for those students that have a burning desire to transfer from an acknowledged campus to a 4-year institution. It is a great campus to get all of the general education requirements out of the way at a fraction of the cost that a tradition 4-year institution would cost.

folsom lake college is a modern college, complete with a staff and facility that would rival any college today. folsom lake college also resides in the heart of the beautiful town of folsom, california, where you have the finest choices of restaurants and activities. during the summer, you can even drive to a multiple number of lakes, including the infamous lake tahoe.

    Tips for prospective students

although not the cheapest place to live, the outlying towns are close by the school and are much more affordable. the campus itself is complete with a cafeteria with a small but ample choice of food and drinks.

    Academic Rigor

the staff at folsom lake, are very eccentric and have a very welcoming personality. i am never afraid to ask a question in the classes and always feel apart of their discussions. the class sizes are of a perfect size and allow the teachers to know you on a personal level. the staff is also very knowledgeable and can answer any question you ask of them.

    Dorm Life

there are no dorms at folsom lake college.

    Food and Dining

the cafeteria is small but has a wide selection of food. they have a selection of hand made sandwiches, burgers, pizza and stir fry that you can choose from. you will never feel crowded or have to wait in really long lines which is always a plus. there are a very large number of restraurnts as well that are all a very short drive away in case you need to stay close.

    What to do for fun

folsom itself has plenty of outdoors activities such as hiking, river rafting and boating as well as bowling alleys, movie theaters, shopping centers. whatever you need folsom should have it. 10 mins from campus in old folsom, the night life is lively with kids from all around, having fun in the local bars.

Folsom Lake College is a good community college. It is decently sized and continually growing. All in all its a great place to start a college career.

    Tips for prospective students

Know what you are doing. This is time to find a direction in life (if you haven't already). I would recommend to meet with a counselor early and set out a path so you don't take useless classes. Also do research on the profs you are thinking about taking.

    Academic Rigor

It varies from prof to prof and from class to class. There are easier profs who won't really challenge you or harder profs where you'll get the best growth and education... It all depends on what your looking for.

    Dorm Life

I do not believe there is a dorm at this campus.

    Food and Dining

Its adequate. Got a cafeteria with good hours and a cart that shuttles around with food. Nothing fancy.

    What to do for fun

FLC has some sports teams like golf and tennis. also they just got a new dance studio for all you dances out there.

    Bang for the buck

get undergrad education for a great price

Great for these types of students

great for students who want to get an education but don't have the money to go to a big time college

This is an excellent starter school for transferring or students who are unsure about their major. The teachers are wonderful, and the other students are very nice.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your homework! Use the Reading, Writing, and Research Center, Library, and study!

    Academic Rigor

Overall most of my classes have been moderately to fairly difficult. There are plenty of essays to do, but it's nothing that won't go way over your head.

    Dorm Life

    There are no dorms.

    Food and Dining

I haven't had the food yet, but The Falcon's Roost is a neat looking little place.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of clubs, activities, and all sorts of fun things to participate in. There are also athletics as well.

    Bang for the buck

It's definitely a lot cheaper than going straight to a UC or CSU!

    Clubs and Activities

There is everything from the Gay-Straight Alliance to Chess Club here at Folsom Lake. There is something for everyone, and if you can't find it in a club, you can find it in a classroom, or you can create your own club!

    Campus Safety

The police are great, they are always patrolling and there is usually a car going through the parking lot at any time. Plus the campus is well lit and everything is relatively close together.

the counselors are knowledgeable and look for ways to help you with your education plan. most teachers have assessable office hours and wish to help their students be successful in and out of the class room. the campus also sponsors many multicultural performances which i greatly enjoy.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you go to your teacher's office hours. they are there to help you. the librarians also are always available to help with research and are very good at helping with term papers.

    Academic Rigor

most classes are challenging but not overwhelming particularly when your go to the teacher's office hours.

    Dorm Life

there are no dorms at folsom lake college.

    Food and Dining

the food is good but there is not much selection due to the small campus size. price is also fairly standard.

    What to do for fun

just like every college, there are good professors and bad ones. the campus is nice, clean, parking isn't too bad, and the campus size is easy to travel. the art professors are just okay.

    Tips for prospective students

sign up for classes the minute you can or you will be out of luck. it will take 30 units to be able to move up to a better registration date so don't count out taking classes you don't need. research your classes and professors on ratemyprofessor.com, some reviews are helpful, some are reviews of bitter, lazy students, however, knowledge is still knowledge.

    Academic Rigor

i've yet to have a really difficult class, but that may change in a few weeks as i am taking trig.

    Dorm Life

    there are no dorms.

    Food and Dining

i have yet to visit the cafeteria and lounge area but it looks very nice.

    What to do for fun

it's a community college, there really isn't much socializing.

    Bang for the buck

some professors are really good, others make you really hate going to a community college. i have had art professors which i do not respect their work, and have no business teaching a college level course.

folsom lake is a beautiful college, but some driving may be necessary to get all the classes you need. there are four colleges in the district, and you may need to take classes at one of the other colleges to get classes at all. the classes are limited at flc alone and very impacted.

    Tips for prospective students

register as soon as your appointment comes. the classes are very impacted and you have to stay on top of registration to get in. sometimes it's easier just to sign up for classes at a different college in the district or find classes that don't have a waitlist. always register for more classes than you will take or else you could end up with three units instead of fifteen for the semester.

    Academic Rigor

if you get a good teacher, getting a perfect gpa is easy. it's great for padding your gpa before transferring. there are always some difficult teachers though.

    Dorm Life

    no dorms available.

    Food and Dining

many choices in the roost. there's wraps and sandwiches, chicken and burgers, pizza, stir-fries, and some prepacked meals as well.

    What to do for fun

there aren't many clubs on campus, but there are a lot of clubs in the district to look at.

    Bang for the buck

less than $40 a unit and books are much cheaper since they are for undergrad classes. you can go through two semesters on less than $1,000. really great way to save money.

not only is the campus extremely clean and the professors helpful and intelligent, but the students here actually want to learn! the diversity in age among the students is actually really refreshing, because with age comes a different perspective on each subject. and the location is wonderful, since the school is on a hill of its own, and it offers a wonderful view of the city of folsom.

    Tips for prospective students

register for classes early! i cannot stress this enough, because this campus is a very popular campus and is convenient in more ways than one. parking is usually not an issue, but plan to arrive at least 45 minutes to an hour before class during the first two weeks of school. after that, the traffic starts to die down and you can still manage to get parking even half an hour before class.

    Academic Rigor

when people assume that community college is easy, i would encourage them to take a class at folsom lake college. the professors really push you and while they want you to do well in class, they don't hand you the answers on a silver platter. for some classes, exams are a big portion of your grade (as is the case with four-year universities, so it is good preparation), while other classes have more assignments.

    Dorm Life

this does not apply to folsom lake college as it is a community college and everyone commutes to class.

    Food and Dining

the falcon's roost has a java city coffee cart and the food offered in the cafe has a wide variety, with something for literally everyone. there are also specials throughout the week, and it's always very popular with tons of students hanging out in the falcon's roost to eat, socialize, and study with friends.

    What to do for fun

because this is a community college, there are not as many fun activities to do on campus, but there are a lot of fun classes such as yoga, stretch, and kickboxing. there are lots of places to eat near the campus and there is a shopping center two minutes away from folsom lake college. there are also workshops, such as a stress relieving workshop, but there are not very many activities on campus.

    Bang for the buck

at about $36 per unit, the cost of education at folsom lake college is really affordable. and there is financial aid, as well as scholarships that the college offers to make that cost go down even more. going to folsom lake college for two years has helped me save money for a four-year college, and i will be getting two associate's degrees from folsom lake college!

    Clubs and Activities

there are a bunch of clubs at folsom lake college, with something to interest everyone. i personally have not participated in any clubs at folsom lake college because of the number of courses i'm taking, but there are always club reminders on bulletins around the campus.

    Campus Safety

i always feel very safe at folsom lake college! safety has never been an issue for me, because the campus police always makes their presence known. and the location, in a very safe city, is very reassuring. with the new theater, the three stages, there are always people coming and going, so it's never a quiet or unsafe environment.

    Will enjoy being here

I wouldn't mind not having to pay for moving expenses, this school seems as though it it perfect in that I can choose which location is better for me.

    Bang for the buck

Oh my goodness, community college is so much cheaper than a university. This school is perfect for someone who doesn't want to pay that much for general ed.

    Tips for prospective students

I would consider attending this school, even if community colleges don't appeal to you, I would take this one into consideration.

Great for these types of students

    Am learning a lot

Maybe it's just because I'm younger than most other college students, but I find that I am learning an amazing number of new things. The teachers here are sometimes not quite up to par, either on ability to teach or qualification to teach, which is why I took off a star, but the vast majority of instruction I have received has been amazing and of the greatest quality. One of my music professors has a Ph.D. in musical composition! I mean, can you ask for better qualifications?

    Am enjoying being here

The environment at Folsom Lake is very clean and fresh. Much of the equipment is new or like new, and the buildings are very well built: pretty and functional. The quality of the teachers extends not only to the education, but their desire to help you to feel better about your goals, expand your horizons, and bring you closer to where you want to be. The student interactions here are different for everyone; if you want to be alone, that's easily doable here, but if you're like me and need people around to keep you from going totally insane, friends are not hard to come by at Folsom Lake.

    Bang for the buck

Need I say more than a semester of instruction with a Ph.D. for $108? Great quality for ridiculous prices.

    Tips for prospective students

Give it a shot! It's a great place to find yourself if you're not sure where you want to be yet (like me!).

Great for these types of students

Students that aren't sure of themselves yet, students that need extra reinforcement of undergrad/high school skills, students look for a cheaper alternative to a four year with similar quality
