Here at George Mason University a.k.a GMU or Mason, classes are small and the professors are shockingly always available to answer questions by email or in person. Lecture halls are usually semi-big but then they are divided into Labs where you are able to get one on one assistance with your instructors. I learned so much within my first semester there and was well prepared entering my second semester. My professors were compromising and taught me new ways to study, write papers and do presentations. My strengths were brought out and my so called weaknesses are no longer categorized as such! I am a nursing major but I have been introduced to all other majors and everyone seems to know a little about everything which is great given that the school is big and yet feels like a spacious home.

    Am enjoying being here

I am more than just enjoying being here at Mason, I'm doing somersaults everywhere! I love my family and my friends at home but I just feel like GMU is my home. It's hard not to consider it as so because I love my girls especially given that we are so different in ethnicities, backgrounds and races and yet completely have each other's backs!

    Bang for the buck

The campus is so amazing and the people that are within the Mason community make the money so worth the spending! Especially given that it feels like home [and better] and the people you meet really do become family!

    Tips for prospective students

Manage your time well! Study and go to every class. Professors will notice familiar faces and will thus compromise with you if something comes up! Go to lectures because the professors give tips for exams. Also, have fun and be willing to open up to new people and change for the better! Moreover, remember that this is education you're paying for or somebody else is paying for; do not waste the opportunity to learn, grow and prosper!

Great for these types of students

The Mason community is diverse!!! Everyone will find a place if they choose to look and open up! However, I think George Mason University is an institution for students who love diversity and being around other cultures, races and people of various interests, etc! Mason is not a community for those who choose to be close-minded because GMU is what it is because of all the colors of the rainbow! Patriots rule!!!

I get excited about what I have learned when I leave my classes. I am a psychology major and psychology is very interesting within itself, but I have been able to explore my major in ways to help me decide what I want to do after I get my degree. I feel that I will be well prepared to go out into the work force when I graduate because of the knowledge and great teaching abilities of my professors.

    Am enjoying being here

I am very much enjoying being at Mason. But in order for it to be fun, you have to be social and get involved in the Mason community events and organizations! Plus, it's very accessible to Washington, D.C.

    Bang for the buck

It's a little pricey if you are an out-of-state student, but it's worth the money for your experiences that you gain!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There is so much to choose from at Mason. All of the organizations make themselves well-known with lots of events and lots of ways to help you academically. Also, ask for help when you need it. There are many resources for help with papers, exams or even if you just don't understand the material being taught to you. One of the best types of resources provided is Blackboard where you can chat with your professors and classmates and pretty much any time of the day! And many professors provide extra notes on Blackboard =)

Great for these types of students

Every single type! All races/ethnicities/genders/religions/beliefs are accepted here. It's beautiful! We're like one giant melting pot!

I am a Biology major here at George Mason University and I have just completed my first academic year. The first semester was a real wake up call! Don't expect to enter college and sleep your way through it! It takes a lot of work on the student's part to do well but it is certainly worth it. I have only been impressed and grateful for the Biology department. GMU is a growing and expanding school and the Biology department is relatively new, but it is state of the art and up to date. The research that is going on here is absolutely amazing and every professor here encourages the students to get involved with research. Speaking of professors, all are kind and caring. You can easily contact them and they give swift responses. One thing that really helps my studying here is the free tutoring in almost every subject. One must simply find the tutoring center and inside will be fellow students ready to help. My favorite so far has been the writing center, always take your paper there first before turning it in!

    Am enjoying being here

The thing I enjoy the most about GMU is the atmosphere. George Mason has really been expanding and growing. They've recently added a new cafeteria and gym along with two new state of the art buildings that I believe will house the Fine Arts and Computer Technology majors. They've also added a new George Mason Inn that has a large convention center and a giant parking deck (I am most excited about that!). Like I mentioned before there is a lot of research going on here as well. The Krasnow Institute located on campus does work on neuroscience and psychology and provides great opportunities for student to get involved, either to help with the research or to participate in it! The over all feeling here is being on the cutting edge of technology and research. I feel like I'm really part of something important; I'm at a school that is growing in name, importance, and size! The other aspect of this school that I enjoy thoroughly are the students and professors. Professors are always kind and helpful, but the students have been the most welcoming. After visiting many campuses my senior year of high school I decided on GMU because the students were down to earth, kind and accepting. There is always something going on as well! Basketball is huge at GMU and everyone goes to the games! But there is always something happening either in the main building, the Johnson Center or in the middle of campus. My favorite event so far has been the farmer's markets!

    Bang for the buck

George Mason University is a an extremely affordable school. As long as you're in state the tuition is rarely over $4,000. The great thing about it is you're getting great professors, a great atmosphere, a rising standard in academics and state of the art technology and classrooms for much less than other public institutions. In fact, George Mason University was ranked the number one school to watch by US News & World Report! We are very proud of that and it just goes to show you how GMU is a rising star.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour of the campus and talk to students who you see just sitting around. I had a friend who took the tour and then went and sat in the Johnson Center to get a feel for what everyday life would be like. Make sure to check out the research centers and talk to a few professors. GMU does a wonderful job at new student orientation so don't be worried or confused. Always make sure to ask a lot of questions! Get your books early, before the school year starts to avoid the mad rush! But lastly, enjoy yourself and be prepared for a lot of work! College isn't easy and the amount of responsibility you have to take on is a little worrisome at first, but you get used to it!

Great for these types of students

George Mason is awesome for commuters. I myself am a commuter and I have really enjoyed it. I live a good 30 minute drive from campus, but I don't feel like I'm missing out on the college experience. Like I've said, it's not hard to get involved and GMU does a wonderful job of providing entertainment and activities (like the FREE movies on weekends.) Commuting allows me to have the comforts of home, save a little money, and still enjoy my years in college!

I do not know where to begin in describing how much I have learned at George Mason. This past year was my first year at Mason and I started off as a biology major. My first semester provided me with a variety of classes that kept me on my toes. However, my second semester lead me to change my major to History. For the first time in my schooling, I switched from learning U.S. history, to studying African Civilization. My History 262 surprised me with such interesting information, that it opened my eyes to change my major to History. I am not looking back on that decision. Mason has a huge variety of classes that will provide a foundation and letting you grow into professionals.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love the campus and the people. The friends that i have made this past year will be ones that I will keep forever. I have also joined a sorority and I am a proud sister of Alpha Omicron Pi. There are so many things to do on campus, even though Mason is sometimes referred to a commuter school. Whether its eating in the Johnson's Center with my sisters or throwing a football in Presidents Park (where I used to live), I can easily say that I made the best decision to come to George Mason and I am enjoying every minute of it.

    Bang for the buck

Everyone rants and raves how close George Mason is to D.C. and how inexpensive Mason is compared to the universities in D.C. During my second semester I went into Washington D.C. just about every weekend. I had to venture into the capital city for several of my classes and I was in complete awe how easy and fast it took to get there. There are so many opportunities in Washington D.C. and going to Mason helps brings those opportunities to its students, without the higher tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

Please get involved with the Mason community. It is such a diverse school with so many activities that will expand your horizons and provide you with the best college experience.

As a student here at George Mason University, I would have to say that with George Mason is definitely an A school for B students. GMU is one of the most underrated schools in the country academically, offering many opportunities by the surrounding D.C. area. The professors here are top-notch, whether they be full-time or adjunct with local jobs in the Nation's capital. With every class comes a great experience with an even more outstanding professor teaching you through it. Here at George Mason, the professors are as good as any Ivy League school professors, and it is an outstanding school to feel strong about the degree you are receiving.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus isn't exactly what you would call huge, but at the same time it isn't small either. I would have to say it is the perfect size for any student, of any background or living community. There are many different on-campus and off-campus opportunities for living, whether you like huge dorms with 30+ people, or in my case a small hall with about 16 people. There is also activities going on all the time, whether it be Midnight Madness in the Johnson Center, or Faculty vs. Student Softball Game for the Music Department, there is always something for any student.

    Bang for the buck

The opportunities that are offered at George Mason are worth any sum of money. Being in the D.C. area, working with professionals, having fun on campus, and being in a great academic environment are all things you couldn't pass up, so why wouldn't George Mason be worth it?

    Tips for prospective students

I would say for those who plan on attending George Mason, to be open to new things. When I first arrived here, I didn't think I enjoyed the college life at all, but that was because I psyched myself into thinking just that. As time went on, there were a few select people who really helped transition from high school to college, as stubborn as I was. The fact is, college is new and different, so why try to change that simple fact? The truth is, you can't, and like your parents tell you when you're 12 years old, change can be good, and if you come to Mason, change IS good.

Great for these types of students

Mason is great for any type of student. The diversity here is astounding and there are many different places and environments to study or hang out. Whether it be the second and third floor libraries at the Johnson Center or the late night sports bar, Ike's, Mason offers a variety of environments that can fit anybody's needs.

George Mason University is a great school to attend if you are in process of earning your college degree. The academics are excellent and the class sizes, on average, are medium. The professors are informative when it comes to the subject that they teach. After a semester at Mason I have learned a lot of material in various different areas of studies; from math, to history, to religion, and more.

    Am enjoying being here

Mason, as it is most commonly referred to, is a great environment and portrays a vibrant campus. The Johnson Center, or the JC, is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and grab a bite to eat, finish up assignments, or get all your textbooks and Mason gear from the bookstore. The community of this campus welcomes anybody who chooses to come to school here. As Mason continues to grow and expand, you get to become part of a growing spectacle. With new dorms the campus houses nearly 5,000 students. New gyms, facilities, and the Southside: all you care to eat buffet make Mason a place where you have everything you need. The Mason Inn that will be opening in the summer of 2010 gives Mason another great addition to the growing legacy here.

    Bang for the buck

You get the most out of your money if you decide to come to school at Mason. Mason is not too expensive at all; even though college overall is expensive Mason is quite affordable. It's proximity to Washington, D.C. gives it another asset that makes the experience worthwhile. D.C. has some of the nation's nicest museums and also is a great place to go if you're looking for a good night out on the town. The education you get at Mason will ensure you that when you graduate with your degree you will have all the necessary skills and more to exceed and excel in your career choice.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you visit the campus and/or speak with current students here in order to learn and obtain all the information you need about the campus. The professors at Mason are willing to help and will always be available for assistance if you need help. Attending the lectures is important if you want to do well in your courses. Adjusting to the college lifestyle may not be easy at first, but after a period of time you will adjust and enjoy it. Make sure you give your best effort and you will be fine. Join a fraternity/sorority or another organization to get involved. Also remember to have fun and enjoy college. It is one of the best experiences of your life so take the time out to enjoy it.

Great for these types of students

Overall you will enjoy your experience at Mason. You will not only gain skills and learn what you need to for your career, but you will also learn more about yourself and grow as a person. You will get to bond with other college students who are going through the same process that you are. Mason has plenty of things for you to enjoy on campus. Whether it's hanging out in the JC, participating in a club, or enjoying Weekends at Mason there is plenty to do. Mason also has a great basketball team and the home games are electric and always entertaining. So kick back, relax, and enjoy your experience. Go Patriots!

As long as you have a genuine thirst for knowledge, most classes will be very intriguing and you will take pride in what you have learned. Many of the professors I have come into contact with are excellent teachers and are highly available through email. I have gotten responses back from professors within hours of sending my message. Learning at Mason does not stop at the exit of classroom; while visiting the career and academic advising centers I have gained important knowledge on specific majors and careers I'm interested in. In the career center there's a mini library of books about almost every career imaginable.

A large number of professors encourage their students to get involved with campus activities. I am proud to say that I was involved with helping set up and prepare the AIDS Quilt that came to GMU during AIDS/HIV Awareness week. Many students and I hung large quilts around the JC (Johnson Center). On each one, pictures and names of people were quilted in remembrance of those past.

With some classes, you'll find yourself attending world class performances at the Center for the Arts building where pianist Lang Lang has/will perform. Or even at other various campus events that teachers may give extra credit for. There is a continuous stream of job workshops at Mason that aim to enhance your job-getting and job-performing skills.

At Mason, the education goes beyond the lecture halls.

    Am enjoying being here

I can honestly say that I do enjoy being at GMU. The food and varied selection is above average, relative to most universities in America. Although, the food at Southside dining hall can become bland due to excessive visits, so don't eat all of your day's meals there. Instead try to mix it up by going to one of the many places in the JC or in Student Union I (they have Chick-Fil-A =]).

I know many of you may be concerned about the freshman 15 but don't fret because there are MULTIPLE gyms on campus. My favorite (due to proximity) is Skyline gym; its building structure is connected to the Southside dining hall and is just footsteps away from a freshman residence area called DUCC. Then there is the Aquatics Center which contains a gym and an Olympic size pool. The newest addition to Mason's ensemble of physical fitness buildings is the RAC (Recreation and Athletic Complex).

The social experience is excellent, especially if you choose to live in the Living Learning Community. The LLC program takes students with similar academic interests and puts them on the same floor in a communal dorm. I have found that the communal dorms in the University Commons residence halls creates a more social atmosphere between you and your floor mates. Some floors have gotten to know each other so well that they modeled their floor's commons area into a living room; with couches, a table and big screen television. Not all the floors have these luxuries but you and your floor mates can donate items to transform your hall into a real home. The student clubs are highly active and will definitely keep you involved. They prove to serve as excellent mediums for meeting other students and making friends.

    Bang for the buck

If you are out-of-state and don't have a large amount of scholarship money, it may be a financial risk to make GMU your choice. On the other hand if you are in-state or are financially secured through scholarships then I encourage you to choose Mason. One of the downturns is that some classes require you to purchase brand new books so that you receive a new online code to log into the online portion of the course. The codes from used books are not recyclable. So in some cases you may not be able to buy the cheaper used books. Compared to other schools of the same or lesser quality, the education and career connections are well worth the price.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Consider this school if you are in-state and/or live very close to the campus; it offers a great education for a relatively low price.
    2) Apply for early decision; (a time period during the fall) it will increase your chances of being accepted.
    3) If it is possible, make a visit to the school.

Great for these types of students

GMU is great for students who live in the northern Virginia area; close to home and they can be a commuter student. They can save money on out-of-state tuition and maybe room and board if they decide to live at home. Mason is the ideal university to attend for students who are seeking diversity. The campus population is colorful; with many different nationalities, religions, and cultures. The atmosphere encourages people to be open-minded and allows people express who they are.

The professors here are great and deserve more resources from the school itself. You see professors who are dedicated into making and seeing their students become successful and if you ever have a question most would have a reasonable amount of office hours for you to come in and discuss about the class or even your grades. Class sizes are fairly small yet for many 100 level classes you have lecture hall classes with a lot of students, make sure you attend all lectures because most professors lectures are based upon the test question itself. It's not exactly IVY league quality, but there's something you will learn.

    Am enjoying being here

In truth this campus gets really boring at nights and weekends, many would say because it lacks a football team and many would argue that this school just has no spirit. Frats are off campus and only a few ever join one since they are expensive and at times selective or time consuming. Most students here are commuters who you never see around campus. There are many clubs, but other than that there isn't for a student to do around here. People mostly keep to themselves and the dorms are fairly quiet most days. You hear people brag about the 2006 Basketball Finals all the time so much that it gets tiring. If you are a student who are seeking a quiet and anti-social education come here, but if you want to have fun in college and remember the 4 years for the rest of your life then by all means don't go here. I am glad to be transferring out next semester due to tuition problems to Washington State University. For the money its better to go to a school people know of instead of hearing, George Mason? Never heard of it... what state is it in?

    Bang for the buck

For an in-state student it is a great deal and by all means come here if you cant get into VT or any of the other state schools.

As an out-of-state students, I pay $42,000 a year and it's just flat out not worth it. The Financial Aid office don't offer as much as you want and when I came across the tuition problem they didn't do much to help, I got the college isn't right for everyone response. Although it is considered a state funded school, it is 80% private and operates like one which means that they will do everything to such every penny out of you. It is not a good value and if your an out-of-state student don't go here at all cost.

    Tips for prospective students

Spend a lot of time researching how much money you'll be getting, FAFSA offers about $1800 a year Pell Grant and $2750 subsidized loans which means that you will need a private loan. If you come from a low income family make sure you have a strong co-signer otherwise you will be stuck having no way to pay for college and GMU will place a hold on your account eventually leading them to report you to a collection agency.

Study hard if you decide to go here and don't spend too much of your time sleeping in.

Go to lectures because if you don't you will regret it at mid-term.

Do your best to make friends because that's how you survive the next 4 years.

Great for these types of students

Instate resident who are looking for decent education.

They keep students extremely busy with work even during the first week, but as long as you learn to manage your time, then you'll be fine.

    Am enjoying being here

This school really is a huge suitcase school. If you live out of state, then you'll definitely be able to find the other out-of-state students on the weekends because most of the in-state students go home, and the campus is practically empty. If you're looking for any parties at all, then be ready to walk 20 minutes to the fraternity houses, or find a ride. If you're planning on going into DC a lot, then it will take you between a 1/2 hour to an hour to get there, depending on where you're going. You could also visit Fairfax Corner, which has some different restaurants.

    Bang for the buck

It's a lot of money for an out-of-state student.

    Tips for prospective students

Since I am an out-of-state student, I've gotten extremely homesick here. I live almost 7 hours away, and when so many of the students here go home on weekends, it really makes me want to go home as well. Be ready for an empty campus on weekends. Make sure you meet lots of people as soon as you get here so that you can keep yourself busy.

Although I'm not learning a lot in my Honors classes (go figure), I do learn a lot in the classes for my major. My Abnormal Psychology class blew me away.

I love Mason! I don't plan on transferring anywhere. The campus is beautiful and diverse.

    Am learning a lot

Having only recently declared halfway into my sophomore career, the opportunity awaits to gain extensive knowledge in my field of interest and thus claim that I am learning a lot at Mason. Nevertheless, I have learned quite a few essentials on college life and how to take advantage of the numerous leadership positions, job hirings, and elective classes that Mason has to offer. I can honestly say that I have matured and honed important skills from my college experiences so far.

    Am enjoying being here

Though not my initial first choice, I have grown a fondness and appreciation for all that Mason has to offer. The school is brimming with activity from all the sports games, free student hosted events, engaging classroom and study group discussions-- the experiences Mason presents to the individual are bountiful, ranging from playing intramural soccer in one of the four huge fields by Mason's field house, scuba diving in the gym's pool, salsa dancing lessons, to cheering at basketball games, relaxing at Starbucks, and hosting a campus sponsored pizza party.

    Bang for the buck

The price to attend Mason is personally satisfying, and with all the scholarships provided through and outside of Mason how can completing one's studies here not be a good deal?

    Tips for prospective students

While researching colleges and perusing endless student reviews I found myself re-reading the same sentence: college is what you make of it. And I highlight this point: college is what you make of it. I know students who are successfully breezing their way through Mason and having fun. I know students who are vigorously- and perhaps too stressfully- seizing all that Mason (cheaply) offers. I know students who've holed themselves up in their rooms, playing video games, drinking (cheap) beer, feeling despondent and quietly declaring: This school sucks. Some food for thought.

Great for these types of students

For the practical student, (I wish to emphasize practical... a fine quality to possess) who realizes that big schools offer various, assorted opportunities for an affordable price, and doesn't mind that bigness.
Side note: some students may prefer a college that they can bond to, that has a history, a distinguished title, an interesting aspect, a school tradition, a good size for becoming acquainted with most of the student body. A college that is like an elegant, decorative home with comfortable dimensions, where delicate conversationalists lodge. This is not practical.

Most of the professors are very helpful and willing to meet during office hours or chat before or after class. A lot of them have experience in the public school systems or in the professional music world through many of the military ensembles in the area.

My two favorite things to do? Play in the pep band (Green Machine, I'm The oboe!) and cheer on our guys. Also, hanging out with my brothers in Kappa Kappa Psi (National honorary fraternity for college band members).

I have really enjoyed the student-professor relationship here so far. I have taken a wide variety of art classes and have loved every one of my professors. My classes have all been small in size which helped with more one on one time with my professors.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the area as well as it's close proximity to D.C. I enjoy that there is always something to do during the weekends and I especially enjoy the easy Mason to Metro transportation that makes it a breeze to get to the city quickly.

    Bang for the buck

The free transportation is fabulous and totally worth it, but parking and housing are a bit on the expensive side. But overall, everything you pay for is worth what you get in return.

    Tips for prospective students

Have fun and take advantage of all that the school has to offer, but just remember why you are coming to college: to learn. Sometimes it is hard to get lost in the large amounts of free time, and the social life present!

Great for these types of students

Anyone looking to live nearby a large city, and someone who won't necessarily have a car on campus because the city transportation is fabulous.

    Am learning a lot

I have learn a lot about myself and the people in general. You have a lot of freedom here. There is no curfew (like at some colleges), you parents are not around, and you can pretty much do whatever. Just remember why you're here....for that degree.

    Am enjoying being here

You have to find the right people to hang out with. Don't be too quick to join a soro./frat, because a lot of people regret it and they realize that they can't commit to it as much as they would like. GMU is trying to make sure that the students have things to do on campus, and some of the things are wack, but you can't blame them for trying.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive in general, but GMU is worth it. It's a good school.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focus, have fun, and don't stress.

Great for these types of students

People who like people, learning about other cultures, and who don't mind that GMU is in the middle of no where.

GMU has one of the best managed and well-kept campuses I have ever visited! The GMU community is extremely welcoming and are more than happy to assist you in ANYWAY possibly. It's a perfect school for anyone looking into a Science directed major.

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the campus and apply early! GMU is a high demand school. There are immense scholarship opportunities, out-of-state potentials don't be scared away! Just apply early!

    Academic Rigor

Very catered to a students major. Not students, student. You're not a number at GMU. GMU's degree programs are like a tailored suit, fitted to you as a student. You won't find anything off the rack here.

    Dorm Life

I'm unfortunately living off campus, but haven't heard any negatives about the GMU dorm life!

    Food and Dining

Food opportunities are endless! With a growing student diversity, the food is equally as international. There is literally something for everyone!

    What to do for fun

The Patriot Center is always bumping! There is always someone there and students are almost always offered free or discounted tickets! At GMU you are also less than half an hour from the nations capital, Washington D.C. Where I can guarantee something is always going on!

    Bang for the buck

For out of state students the tuition is a little costly, but the education is soooo worth it! In state is incredibly cheap!! Just apply early for multiple scholarships, because GMU is generous.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't know what you would consider unusual but with GMU you learn to never be surprised!:) There is always something going on on campus.

Great for these types of students

Any! GMU is very culturally diverse. But is especially great for Science related majors!

    Clubs and Activities

You want a club for it, I'm sure GMU already has one.

    Campus Safety

Because of it's close proximity to the Nations capital GMU is one of the safest campuses in the country.

I am currently enrolled in Mason's nursing program and the level of commitment that professors and advisors have for their students is astounding. Being at a school that is located in Northern Virginia and so close to Washington D.C. allows for better job opportunities and a wider variety of patients than if I were to have gone to a less populated area. I am also really grateful that George Mason's nursing program requires its students to get their RN license directly after completing schooling because it gives me the upper hand, being that I can apply for a job so soon.

    Academic Rigor

Because I am in the Nursing program, Mason is extremely rigorous when it comes to academics. You are fighting for your spot in the program and not even half of the pool is accepted.

    Dorm Life

Dorms were nice but sometimes the people that you have to live with are unbearable. Some dorms are really loud and it seems that no one ever sleeps (throwing parties or listening to music or constantly hanging out in the hallway). Others are so quiet that everyone can hear your conversation when you are walking out of the elevators or out of the stairwell, let alone in the hallway.

George Mason is an up and coming school, with many great attributes. The school is updating all of its housing, educational institutions, and upgrading its educational workforces, all for the enhancement of its student population. Overall, a wonderful school to attend.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you look at other schools as well, so that your perfect school can be found. Mason is close to the DC area, so any major that is government-based can be found in exceptional quality at George Mason.

    Academic Rigor

Some what difficult, depends mainly on an individual's major of choice. Some majors are a more book-study intensive course, while others are more hands on. All dependent upon the chosen major or course of study.

    Dorm Life

Fun, but without a sport or entering into Greek life, it will get slow over time. Use extra-curricular activities to spice things up a little.

    Food and Dining

Good food around campus, when using meal plans go to the buffet-style dining facility called Southside. one meal swipe gets you as much as you can eat.

    What to do for fun

Greek Life, sports, clubs, just find something that interests you and stick with it.

    Bang for the buck

Food, as well as Greek Life. Greeks get into special events for reduced charge or for free, as well as opening doors for internships where former Greek life members would look favorably upon you for showing the dedication required to enter into the brotherhood.

Never step on the plaque in front of the Mason Statue. Means you will not graduate in 4 years.

Great for these types of students

Anyone interested in government, anyone with a DC internship in mind. Spectacularly close to DC, with the Metro bus running from several stops on campus directly to Vienna.

    Clubs and Activities

Numerous clubs, with everything from knitting, to story-telling, to competitive shooting.

    Greek Life

Small, but growing. Excellent community service opportunities.

    Campus Safety

Officers regularly patrol the campus, with police cadets available for any security need that would require an escort.

    Academic Rigor

George Mason is an up and coming school, so grades and achievements are taken very seriously. A lot of people don't think it's a great school academically, but it truly is.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are neat and clean, and some are even being renovated and updated. It's a great living environment and social atmosphere.

    Food and Dining

The food is great. I absolutely love it! Southside is my favorite because it's all-you-can-eat, and it's located right above a gym so you can burn off all those calories.

Don't judge the school based on your first visit. This was the last school I was considering attending based on visits, but now I can't imagine myself at any other college.

    Dorm Life

Living in an LLC at Mason completely shaped my experience at the university. The Living-Learning Community gives your opportunities that regular dorms will not.

    Food and Dining

Depending on where you eat, you can be very pleased or disappointed with the food. A word to incoming freshmen: stay away from the jc food court. Unless they're fixing it up this year, its still gross. Best places to eat: la pat, southside, hot spot.

George Mason University is sometimes mistaken for a commuter college because there are a lot of students that commute, however this doesn't affect the social aspect of the university. It is a diverse university with students of all ages and ethnicity which makes it easier for any student to have an enjoyable college experience.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend campus involvement to as much as you can, such as Greek Life, clubs and activities, or even a job on-campus. This will help build strong leadership skills as well as long lasting friendships.

    Academic Rigor

Academia is pressed on students from the beginning. George Mason University has a clear distinction in classes that are higher level. Students are encouraged to see the professor or the Teacher's assistant for help. Each department in different, however the School of Engineering at George Mason University is brilliant due to the technology available.

    Dorm Life

Honestly, it is excellent for upperclassmen with many options, however Freshmen seem to have a lesser advantage because they have only one option.

    Food and Dining

There are many Food and Dining options available on campus ranging from Burger King and Taco Bell to Subway and Chick filA. Southside is a eat all you can buffet restaurant that is open to all students. They serve breakfast, lunch, meals, snack, dessert. If that isn't enough, off campus dining options are close by as well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Mason week is one of the most fun and memorable experiences. It happens right before exams and graduation so that is an excellent time. Events such as a free carnival, concert (Plain White T's or Hot Chelle Rae are the recent picks), and much more to end the year.

    Clubs and Activities

It is simple for students to get involved in campus activities. Student involvement organizes events all year round. Our events include formal dance, Mason week, concerts with popular artists, as well as study lounge and snacks for hard working students. All of this is organized by students and activities center.

    Greek Life

Greek life is encouraged at George Mason University for the full college experience. I am in an Honor Fraternity and I have found people that are more than just friends to me. It is perfect for me because it is a group of social students that still have excellent academic goals.

You feel like you are in your own suburban community immediately surrounded by city life. Everything you need, from people and food to a nice place to just chill, is here you just have to explore around. Mason is a place where students make their own tradition.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring clothes and other items for every type of whether when you first come. Get to know the people on your floor and joins some clubs. Read everything everywhere because a lot of cool/fun stuff happens, but people just don't know because they don't pay attention.

    Academic Rigor

Like in all colleges and universities, it depends on the courses you take and the teachers you get. Ratings of teachers on websites like ratemyprofessors.com are sometimes accurate descriptions of the teachers. It just depends on what kind of student you are.

    Dorm Life

It's only fun if you take the effort to make a good impression and interact with the people on your floor. Otherwise you'll be missing out on a lot of opportunities. Community bathrooms and showers aren't a problem because everyone has their own schedule and some just learn to adjust.

    Food and Dining

If you live on campus then buy some food to store in your dorm because you will get too lazy to buy food from the dining place 5 minutes away from where you live. The foods great as long as you don't eat it every single day.

    What to do for fun

Mason organizations are always planning something fun. You just have to keep your eyes and ears open. If there is nothing that appeals to you, then you can always hang with some friends at the mall, in D.C., or in Old Town. Just make sure to check the shuttle schedule first!

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs that you can join. Some aren't very active in advertising themselves so you have to look for them. Start looking and joining in your freshman year. It might seem like you don't have time; however, you have the ability to make time. Also it's a lot more fun if you start making memories with a club right in the beginning of the year.

George Mason is an excellent place to gain cultural diversity and meet different types of people. The professors are for the most part helpful and knowledgeable in their fields and I have had several whom I thoroughly enjoyed. The campus life and activities are fun and engaging and help you meet new people and express your school spirit.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, it is recommended that you have a good idea of the program you would like to study and you meet with your course advisor often. Join an on campus organization or group and get involved with other student groups.

    Academic Rigor

The course work is as difficult as you make it. Certainly, upper level classes are going to be harder than lower level classes but if you go to class and do the work on time it will not be too challenging.

    Dorm Life

There are several options for on campus hosing. The living units are very nice and clean and many of the units are new to the expanding campus.

    Food and Dining

The Johnson Center has a variety of dining options from Chick Fil A to Asian and middle eastern cuisine and an great smoothie place. Mason offers meal plans and the prices are relatively affordable.

    What to do for fun

There is a theater on campus that often has viewings of popular movies for students. The Patriot Center always has a great event to attend from concerts to athletic events to the Circus every year. There always is something fun to do.

George Mason University is very focused on offering the best academics it possibly can. They have very modern facilities and you will receive a quality education here. Unfortunately this does come at the expense of student life on campus so if you find yourself outside of Greek Life, you will most likely be very bored here.

    Tips for prospective students

    My tips are as follows:
    1) Live on campus. It is really easy to convince yourself to live off campus or at home with your parents. Don't do this. You are not getting the full college experience if you do this and you will most likely wonder what is so great about college by living off campus.
    2) Get involved with Greek Life. At Mason there are a huge number of fraternities and sororities. They range from social fraternities to multicultural fraternities to business fraternities to Catholic fraternities. This is the best way to get involved and have fun at Mason.
    3) Be outgoing, make friends and have fun! There is a reason that college is considered to be the best time of peoples life. Don't waste it!

    Academic Rigor

GMU is not an easy school to float by in. You will be challenged in most classes that you take. Don't let this scare you off though. They have numerous support systems to help you such as the writing center, math tutoring center, and graduate teaching assistants.

    Dorm Life

Freshman dorms at Mason are average. They are really tiny and you must share a bathroom with your entire floor. All of the dorms do have air-conditioning though which is not always the case at other schools. Once you are out of the freshman dorms, it is a different story. There is no more sharing bathrooms with your entire floor. The rooms are big and you will have access to full kitchens. Most of the upperclassmen dorms have been built in the last 5 years too!

    Food and Dining

Food at Mason is really inconstant. Some days you will get really great food and others you will wonder why you're paying so much for your meal plans. They do have a wide selection of food to choose from. On campus we have: Burger King, Taco Bell, Chick Fila, Starbucks, Panda Express, Subway, Sub Connection (like subway but less quality), Freshens (smoothies), Sangam (Indian food), La Vincinta (Italian Food), Gold Rush (like subway but better quality), 2 buffet style all you can eat places, and much more.

    What to do for fun

Get involved with a student organization. You will be really bored here if you don't. I recommend Greek Life. If you want to party here you pretty much have to be in a fraternity or sorority. Other than that DC is really close by and there is a couple of malls and many movie theaters around.

    Bang for the buck

Mason is really great value for your money if you are an instate student. Housing is a little expensive but Fairfax is rated as one of the nicest places to live in the country and the real estate prices reflect that. Tuition is cheap for the amount of resources you get compared to other schools. Food is about what you would expect for a usual university.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are not to many unusual traditions. Just don't step on the plaque in front of the statue of George Mason or you will graduate a year late!

Great for these types of students

Those that are looking for a school that is great value for their money, near D.C. and large (we are almost up to 35,000 students).

    Clubs and Activities

We have no football team which will likely not change in the future. Basketball season is fun.

    Greek Life

We have no traditional Greek Row which means no fraternity or sorority houses. Most chapters on campus rent out single family houses in the neighborhoods surrounding campus to use as their house. Greek Life is the only way you are going to party at Mason and is the best way to be involved on campus.

    Campus Safety

There is pretty much no crime at GMU. They have their own police force and security that patrols the dorms.

GMU is a great commuter university! It's close to Washington DC and the wonders the city has to offer. There's also a lot of activities for both on-campus and off-campus students.

    Tips for prospective students

    A) Be wary of parking! Arrive early - the earlier you are, the higher chance of attaining a parking spot that's closer to your class.
    B) Mason week and Homecoming week are awesome to take part in! Mason Pride!
    C) Don't skip class! Once you start, it's going to backfire on you. Also, the campus layout is small enough that a professor and/or teammate may see you on campus when you said you're sick.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on-campus, but a lot of activities are catered to dorm students.

    Food and Dining

Food is nothing spectacular. Burger King here, Starbucks there... the necessities, I suppose?

    What to do for fun

    1) Movie nights at the GMU - Johnson Center Cinema.
    2) Mason Day - once a year, GMU carnival with a headlining concert. :)
    3) DC Nightlife. There's Mason shuttles that'll take you to the Metro so you can head into the city for a good time!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

GMU versus VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) basketball games - they're always so intense! I'm not big on basketball but whenever these games occur, they're fun to watch.

    Clubs and Activities

Student organizations are spectacular and very informative. They're also a great way to make friends and keep active while balancing school work.

As a former member of Student Government with no experience in politics, I also found it as a great opportunity to learn how to become a leader.

Typical university with tons of stuff do. Sometimes, too much stuff to do. Beautiful campus.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're an out-of-state student, APPLY FOR EVERY SCHOLARSHIP YOU CAN POSSIBLY FIND. In-state? you're fine.

    Academic Rigor

Idk, I haven't even enrolled yet. But I've heard it's pretty rigorous & very rewarding.

    Dorm Life

I just don't like old-fashioned dorms. You know, the ones with the bathrooms out in the hall? I'm more of a suite girl. But the dorms are very clean. I also have a problem with the decorating rules: 20% of a wall can be decorated at a time. I'm sorry, let me go measure my wall & calculate how much stuff I can put on it.

    Food and Dining

I've only been to an orientation-type event but those cookies were bomb.

    What to do for fun

Kings Dominion is like an hour or two away, it's a theme park that's pretty cool. & everyone who says there's nothing to do, you're crazy! You're 20 minutes outside of the nation's capital! There's a lot of stuff to do if you actually look around.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an out-of-state student, I checked my financial aid from them & they're only offering me $9.5k worth of loans. I'm actually broke too, I live with 3 other people & only one of them has stable income, divorced parents (dad is a deadbeat). You'd think I'd get SOMETHING but nope, not even Pell & I have a 3.0 GPA.

Great for these types of students

    In-state.

    Clubs and Activities

There's so much going on that sometimes I feel as if I'd be that one weird girl clustered in my dorm. Also, they tend to push everyone to get involved and it gets a little uncomfortable when everywhere you go, someone's like OMG, JOIN THIS or SIGN UP FOR THIS, WE MEET EVERYDAY FOR 5 HOURS.

    Greek Life

    No thanks.

    Campus Safety

They have on-campus police & Idk if that's the same thing as the people who walk you to your car at night. It's Virginia, there's bound to be trees everywhere haha. It can get a little creepy at night but stick with your roommate or someone.

george mason university is a great place to meet all new and different kinds of people from anywhere and everywhere in this world. it provides good opportunities for the students both on and off campus such as activities, internships and potential jobs. george mason is a great place to be and i couldn't imagine having picked anywhere else to spend my four years of my college career.

    Tips for prospective students

don't worry, everyone on campus is helpful and friendly and finding your niche here at mason is a feat accomplished in no time. the professors are awesome as long as you stay on their good sides, so work hard and show and put forth the effort and you'll do big things here at this university.

    Academic Rigor

i believe this school to be great both socially and academically, but then again i could be coming from a biased point of view because i love my major so much. but so far, every class i've taken has been very enjoyable, made such by both the curriculum as well as the staff.

    Dorm Life

there are many options for living on george mason, some better than others of course, it all depends on what your college spending limits are and where exactly you want to be. coming in to george mason as a freshman i was nervous of coming to a new place and not knowing anyone on a personal level, but that barrier was breached after just one weekend with my floor and between just hanging out and the resident advisers planned events, i got to know many people very quickly and hold them as great friends in this chapter of my life.

    Food and Dining

there are many great places to choose from when it comes to dining on campus here at mason, but as with any dining options, the key to keeping them great is variety. as long as you make sure that you change it up every once and awhile, each place will stay fresh and keep their prestige throughout your four years. most notably, the dining hall, southside, is the one that mason holds in highest regard. for one meal plan you are given access to an all you can eat buffet with a daily changing menu with everything from a deli line all the way to pasta. if coming to mason, worrying about where to eat is the last thing that you need to worry about.

    What to do for fun

there are many on campus events that are provided by the staff here at mason on a weekly basis. there are also an endless amount of activities going on through one of the many countless clubs that are here at mason. each club holds its own events and if none of them interest you, then you may always start your own club! mason makes it very easy for you to start up anything that you want if a group of people show enough interest for it. another great thing about mason's entertainment is the fact that the patriot center, a stadium for mason's division 1 basketball team, is right in the middle of campus; the patriot center hosts many huge events from basketball games and tournaments, to concerts from popular artists and also the circus comes around once a year. as a student, there are many discounted events you may attend and you will have plenty of opportunities to keep yourself busy and forget about boredom.

    Bang for the buck

with the wealth of opportunities for jobs and internships, activities and events, and academic choices, mason is a great place to commit yourself to and i personally believe that it is worth every penny that i put into it. the opportunities here at this school are endless and your determination is the only true limiting factor when it comes to what you will get out of these four years here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

one amusing tradition is to never step on the plaque located in front and behind the george mason statue in the main square. doing so will bring you bad luck and the only way to counter such luck is to rub the shoe of the mason statue in repentance.

Great for these types of students

mason is a great place for people who want to surround themselves with diversity and every different kind of person. if you're looking for a college to blend in with a bunch of people who look and behave just like you, then perhaps mason is not where you want to be.

    Clubs and Activities

there are an endless amount of clubs and activities on and off campus here at mason provided by both students and faculty. the proximity to washington, dc only makes the opportunities for such things even better for its students. if you find that you have scoured through mason's large list of clubs and organizations and find that none of them interest you then just make your own! here at mason, the faculty makes it very easy for you to start your own club and provide you with funds if you have a big enough following.

    Greek Life

i am personally not a member of greek life and therefore do not want to dwell extensively on the topic, but i do know many in greek life and love it to no end.

    Campus Safety

you should never be afraid to be on campus here at mason. it's almost impossible to walk around and not see some sort of authority figure walking around the school. if there's trouble, it will be intercepted quickly. security patrols throughout the night and watches over during the day to ensure the protection of both mason's students and it's faculty.

george mason has great academic programs, and great teachers. some of the teachers may read from a powerpoint, that's why i only rated them with 4 stars instead of 5. but overall; you'll graduate from george mason with a great understanding of everything that you need to know in your particular major. george mason is what you make of it, so take responsibility for your own academics.

It allows the students to take full advantage of the services provided by the university and specialty programs such as School of Management. Am learning a lot

Being a current fourth-year student at George Mason University (GMU), I have explored two majors and one minor. My experience in all of these departments at GMU has taught me that GMU has quality education. Every single class: from the basic university education classes, science lectures and labs, business classes, and information technology courses, I have learned a tremendous amount. It is remarkable how much GMU has to offer in terms of learning.

    Am enjoying being here

George Mason University (GMU) is quite different compared to many other colleges or universities. I have seen GMU grow from being a predominantly commuter-school to a residential university. Since my first year I have seen many dormitory and building constructions and renovations. I have had the opportunity to experience the GMU residential life and the commuter life. I absolutely enjoy getting an education at a university that is constantly growing and improving. Not to mention, the diversity of the enrolled students is also another reason I enjoy GMU.

    Bang for the buck

GMU is worth the money. With the opportunities provided at GMU, every single penny is worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Since George Mason University is a well-diversified school, I believe it is important to be involved in the many different organizations that are available. You will find many career, networking, and learning opportunities by becoming active and involved with different organizations.

Great for these types of students

George Mason University it great for students that are looking for an education as well as a career. Not many schools give a student the opportunity to work while attending school due to the location. However, since GMU is located in such a great area next to the bigger cities with many career opportunities, it is great for students that want to learn and earn money at the same time.

George Mason University (GMU) so far has been an amazing experience for me. It has classes of 15 and classes of 200 and both have been successful in teaching me what I need to know. It is a big campus, but nothing is more than a 15 minute walk on campus.

    Am enjoying being here

Housing on campus is guaranteed to all students and is growing more and more each year. One great thing about the location of GMU is how close it is to the city. There are so many things to do in Washington D.C. and many of them are free which is helpful on a student’s budget. Although it is just a metro ride away from the city, Fairfax County (where GMU is located) is a very safe neighborhood. The shuttle ride from the metro to campus is a very safe and convenient option for students. There are also shuttles to many places in Fairfax like the malls, restaurants, stores, etc. If students don’t want to leave campus there are many things to do on campus. GMU is a very diverse campus and has many events and programs that are social and educational. There is a movie theater, a performance theater, the Patriot Center (many concerts and events are there), and many food options.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of state student money is tight, but I am an RA and that saves a lot of money, there are many on campus jobs and many ways to save money.

    Tips for prospective students

When living on campus as a freshman at first it may seem as though everyone goes home on the weekends. Although there are some commuters on campus after a couple of weeks people start to stick around and friendships form fast especially with floor mates and roommates. George Mason is a great university and I think anyone could find their niche there simply because there are so many niches available.

Great for these types of students

Students at GMU really need to want to get involved, they can't wait for something to come to them. They have to go for what they want, thankfully GMU has many options.

After going to a community college for 2 years and obtaining my Associates degree, my next plan was to choose a good 4 year university that would fit me needs. I look at Virginia Tech, UVA and George Mason, and for a technical major such as IT Security, GMU had a rather innovative path for prospective students. As I'm currently enrolled in the program, I've learned much more than i have ever thought i would, and I've spoken with many professionals currently in the field. I've let them know what I've learned and what I'm currently doing in these classes and they are rather surprised by the advanced skill set GMU has provided me with. I'm extremely pleased with GMU and what they have taught me so far, and I'm also very confident that finding a job with the skill set I've acquired form here will be quite easy.

    Am enjoying being here

Although I do not live on campus as GMU is mostly a commuter school, i feel at home whenever I'm on campus. From staff, admins, to the counselors and students, everyone makes you feel at home, and it gives you that feeling inside that makes you proud to be a Mason student. I've enjoyed every minute since I've been here, with all of the clubs and events that go on, there is never a time where you can be bored!

    Bang for the buck

Since i did look over two other school, VT and UVA vs. GMU, i realized that for the cost GMU was quite a bit lower per credit, even though its in a very accessible area and the classes teach you more advanced material. Another factor i looked at, is that I can live at home while attending school, thus saving me a drastic amount of money as opposed to living in a dorm, of course we must factor in cost of gas/insurance and time due to not having the ability to walk to class from your dorm.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on coming here from a 2 year college or even straight from high school, GMU will make the transition process quick and easy for you. The counselors are very understanding, and extremely helpful as well as nice. Going here will be one of the best decision in your life!

Great for these types of students

If you like being near a city, having many things to do outside of school as well as enjoying in school events, this school is for you. Very open school community that works with all sorts of personalities, there is always something here for you!

When I visited for the Honors College, I was told of a lot of opportunities for the Honors Students as well as many courses available. There are many neat classes as well as majors that apply to most students.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is alright. As far as faculty goes, I guess since I was only visiting, a lot of the people came off as rude. When I asked a questions, professors, faculty, and students did not answer! I thought it was just me, but when several other people asked similar (and different) questions, there was obvious circumlocution. It was a huge turn-off to visit a college, especially an Honors College, and not be heard. I didn't get much respect as a prospective student. Trying to be optimistic, it might be different in the classroom... But if you think about it, colleges try to flaunt their brightest and best students, as well as faculty, for college visits. Again, I was visiting for the Honors College, so it already shows that I'm given similar opportunities from other colleges. By giving an Honors Student (and family) no respect, it gives a negative appeal to the school.

For me, it is a local, convenient college, and I was debating between this school and six others (four in which gave me similar or better opportunities financially and with Honors courses). This one came from near the top of my list to the bottom. It could be different for the students attending, since there really is a lot of school pride at GMU, but I felt awful when I visited.

I have visited more than once, and I was shown little respect each time. It's really unfortunate to find out that a seemingly great school could have such rude and arrogant people.

    Bang for the buck

It's an okay price for a school, and they give a lot of opportunities for Honors Students. It's an approachable school for students who live locally.

    Tips for prospective students

Applying early and for Honors is great for any college.

Great for these types of students

If you love the school and the campus, go for it. For me, the campus was alright. Not too big, not too small... It still angers me to this day that instead of trying to impress the prospective Honors Students, the faculty and students chose not to give a direct answer... Or any answer at all.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much in my first year at Mason. That said, I feel that it could be a lot more challenging. At the beginning of first semester, I was worried that I had chosen the wrong school because my classes (100-level general education courses) seemed so easy. But now I have been able to take more 200 and 300 level courses, I feel like I'm being challenged without being overwhelmed. I think a large part of the learning experience is self-directed. If you're smart, you can pass classes with minimal effort, but if you actually want to get something more out of it than credits, you can and will.

    Am enjoying being here

Mason frequently gets a bad reputation as a boring commuter school. I could not disagree more. There is something to do on campus most of the time, and when there isn't, the surrounding area has plenty to do. I won't pretend that going into DC isn't more of a trek than Mason tells prospective students, but it is relatively accessible and absolutely full of fun things to do and see. My experience with my fellow students has been largely positive -- most people are friendly and bright, if perhaps a little bit shy. The student body is incredibly diverse; Mason is completely right to boast this aspect. I think meeting and interacting with so many different people from every walk of life really adds a lot to the experience.

    Bang for the buck

It is pretty easy to be frugal at Mason. In-state tuition is cheaper here than at many schools in Virginia, and housing is quite reasonable. The food is good and pretty reasonable with a meal plan. Doing things outside of school can get a bit expensive since the cost of living in the area is so high, and most of the many things to do in the area are not free.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come to Mason if you are looking for the typical college experience wrought with house parties. These are few and far between, and generally Greek affairs. Most of the negativity toward Mason stems from students who were looking for this sort of school and were disappointed. That's not to say that Mason students don't like to have alcohol-enhanced fun, but we tend to do so in a different setting.

Great for these types of students

Mason is a great school for music-lovers because of its proximity to DC, where the options for shows and concerts are endless. If you are looking to get into Greek Life, we have a pretty large community. Many students looking to go into politics come to Mason because of the government major and, of course, proximity to DC. But mostly, Mason is a conglomeration of many different kinds of students, who vary in just about every aspect. It is a place for students who are independent. It is a place for students who wish to broaden their horizons or for students who always felt a little bit 'different' in some capacity (culture, interests, beliefs, etc.) to connect with people similar to themselves.

Diversity, diversity, diversity..would be the top reason for enjoying Mason. Walking around campus you encounter students from all walks of life, and hear different languages spoken; everyone respects and benefits from it. University life is just as vibrant, with activities and events always lined up for students. If you plan on living on-campus don't expect to be bored on weekends, and if you live off-campus- don't worry about being left out because there's plenty to do! The food's not that bad either!

    Bang for the buck

It's a bit pricey if you pay out-of state, but if you're in-state it's reasonable. As a student I'm in close proximity to the nation's capital as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Take time to enjoy the different spots all around campus, as well the surrounding areas. If you plan on learning a new language, you can easily find someone to help you practice-especially with the growing number of international students. Join a club or go Greek! This may sound cliche, but I found it as helpful advice because it truly allowed me to take advantage of the many opportunities available at Mason.

Great for these types of students

Those interested in Global Affairs or want to study abroad in the future. But mostly for everyone! Go Patriots!!

My classes, especially as an honors student, are very difficult. I learn a lot in my classes and put in a lot of effort in my classes. My major is Sport Management and I love how helpful the professors in the department are in terms of making sure classes are scheduled well and you will graduate on time. By having professors who are teaching what they worked in, I have learned a lot of real world experiences that my professors have encountered.

    Am enjoying being here

The environment at Mason is great for learning about other cultures and beliefs. At Mason you can join many new clubs or take a random class to fulfill and elective to learn about something with no relevance to your major. Being able to do this, helps students at Mason learn and be more accepting of others.

I love the environment at Mason because I was scared about having to meet new people since I am an out of state student. But everyone at Mason is very friendly and outgoing. I have found no reason to think about transferring from Mason back to my state.

    Bang for the buck

This is my only issue with Mason. While I think I'm getting a great education, as an out of state student I pay close to three times what an in state student does. Tuition, at this point of 2011, is expected to increase 12% over the next two years.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open, Mason is very diverse and if you're not open to what it has to offer, then you won't be able to enjoy the opportunities that it has to offer its students.

Great for these types of students

The professors at Geore Mason are very helpful. They are available during office hours, answers questions via email, and many offer their telephone numbers. The class sizes are usually small except for lecture classes. Although lecture classes are large you will still be able to ask the professors questions and they are always available during office hours and they always respond to emails. I have learned a lot during my first seemester. I have also learn which study skills works best for me. Students are able to socialize and make good grades. There are a lot of services available for students who need help. You can find fellow classmates who are willing to help those who might be struggling in a class.

I enjoy my time at Mason. There are usually activities happening during the weekends. It is not hard to stay informed about the activities going on at Mason. There are clubs and sports for everyone. To find out information about activities just visit the GMU web page or ask your fellow Patriots. If you live on campus your residential advisor can provide you with information about activities offered at mason. The college is also located in a great community. For a nice price Mason offers many opportunities for its students.

Study hard and relax. Mason is a very diverse community and anyone can fit in. There are activities or everyone so do not be afraid of not finding an activity that is just right for you. I highly recommend applying to Mason. It is worth it, and the cost is VERY reasonable!

    Am learning a lot

As a freshman, I would only take 12 credits just because adjusting to the work load is a bit difficult. Once you get used to it and you learn how to manage your time you'll be fine. I only have two big classes and those are general education courses, the rest range from 10- 20 people. The professors here are very attentive and want you to do well.

    Am enjoying being here

I do enjoy being here, George Mason is a wonderful school where you meet new people everyday. I love living in my dorm, even if it is a bit crowded, I still love it.

Great for these types of students

George Mason is a great University for students who like to be involved and like to expand their culture.

    Am learning a lot

As a former full IB student from high school, I didn't really expect to get much out of my first semester in college. However, the whole arrangement of the lectures, labs, and recitations are opening my eyes to a more in-depth and complete learning experience. I am not just learning in the classroom but also outside the classroom from interactions with my peers and TA's.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being on campus because there's always a place I can find to feel comfortable, whether I want to be around others, or alone to study. Everyone here is friendly and easy to talk to and the professors are always encouraging students to come to their office hours. The honor code on campus creates a comfortable atmosphere where trust comes easy.

    Bang for the buck

I don't live on campus, so I only have to pay for the 16 credits I am currently taking. Being close to home, Mason was my most logical choice, where I can maintain my current job and have the benefits of paying in-state tuition. I still get the full experience around my peers and professors and yet I can also have home cooked meals.

    Tips for prospective students

Interacting with others is the key to getting the college experience at Mason. It's important that you maintain your grades, but sometimes interacting with others can lead to valuable experiences that have more real life applications.

Great for these types of students

Mason is great for anyone looking for a comfortable and diverse environment where they can just be themselves. It is full of research and internship opportunities for anyone looking to get a headstart in their career, as well as study abroad options for those looking to travel.
