    Will learn a lot

HBU has a lot to offer and has a very well rounded academic selection.

    Will enjoy being here

I love being at HBU. The people are friendly (most of the time), there is always something fun and exciting to do, and HBU creates a very comfortable atmosphere.

    Bang for the buck

HBU is expensive, but it really is one of the best colleges to go to for your education. The price is a bit much, but i know I am get a wonderful education.

    Tips for prospective students

The best way to experenice HBU, you have to stay on campus. Many of my best memories at HBU have been in my dorm.

Great for these types of students

Best for students who want to have a growth in their spiritual lives or students who would like to continue their spiritual experience to grow even more.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at HBU know alot about their field of interest and share that passion with the students. Besides classroom instruction, with small class sizes, the professors are willing to answer questions and discuss material outside the classroom.

    Am enjoying being here

There are not many student activities and there are faculty members who are opposed to any new organizations. Besides student activities, it is difficult to keep up with requirements as the rules keep changing almost daily on what is required to graduate; what forms to fill out for permissions to take classes, etc.

    Bang for the buck

No specific opinions here...I know a few people who have been accepted to law schools and medical schools from HBU during the last year but I also hear stories about employers discounting HBU degrees.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard in high school, do well on the SAT, and be willing to apply yourself at HBU. Keep involved in activities outside of HBU in order to keep a good transcript for graduate school.

Great for these types of students

HBU is a well-respected nursing school and is also good for Christianity majors. If you do not care about extra-curricular activities (or don't need them for graduate school), HBU is great for those areas. Also great for students who prefer one-on-one instruction.

    Will learn a lot

I've gone to the campus and I've asked the coordinators and administrators, current students and some of the professors at HBU all the questions that I need to know. And I think that HBU is one of the greatest places to earn your bachelor's or master's degree in whatever you're planning to major in. They have given great confidence of attending here in the Fall of 2011 and I'm eager to learn new things. I'm Buddhist, and HBU is strongly Christian-based and you are required to take 3 classes dealt based on the religion. I thought about how I could be struggling with it along with the 'points' that you are required to reach before graduation, but I'm now confident that I will achieve my goals and get to learn the Christianity faith.

    Will enjoy being here

I'm planning to live on campus because it's easier to deal with the events, attend classes, and study for my classes. The people and staff at HBU are so welcoming and friendly with a positive attitude. The lakefronts and walking trails are all so beautiful, you never want to leave campus! The classroom student teacher ratio is 1:15 so it's personal. The professors know your name and they say hi to you as you're walking. It's such a warm environment.

    Bang for the buck

HBU is expensive, I'll admit that. But if you apply for FAFSA early, you're bound to receive some sort of help from the government. If there isn't enough grants to cover your tuition, there's always student loans that they offer to students as well. HBU offers PLENTY of scholarship money based on ranking percentile, SAT and ACT scores in high school if you are an incoming freshman. HBU also offers merit awards to TRANSFER students based on your current college GPA at your current institution along with an additional Phi Theta Kappa scholarship if you are in good standing with them at your current college. Scholarships from other foundations and companies are also available and accepted at HBU. So if you set it up and complete your tasks, you should be good!

    Tips for prospective students

HBU is difficult to keep with if you aren't motivated and dedicated to your work and studies along with the required things you have to do in order to graduate. The course workload is also more difficult compared to a 2 year community college like HCC. Make sure you get your finances done early as well!

Great for these types of students

HBU has a legit and competitive nursing and pre-med program. They are the college of liberal arts, so if you want to major in music, arts, or business, it's all there. HBU is a well-rounded university that I would recommend to any student!

    Am learning a lot

At Houston Baptist University, there are so many things to learn when arriving at any college, but HBU is a place where there are great professors that teach you the material in their own way. Many of my professors add their own flair to the class, which provides great interest and it becomes an exciting class to attend.

    Am enjoying being here

As I am a commuter, I really do not get the opportunity to stay on campus for some things, but I still have had a great experience here. There are so many things to do here, there are events held almost everyday and when you have friends when is there never a time to waist. The atmosphere is great, the people are very nice, and its just a great place to be, to be free of any pressures and enjoy yourself.

    Bang for the buck

Yes this school is a bit pricey, but you are getting your money's worth. If you think you can not afford it, do not worry, this school gives out great scholarships. They do it based on your rank and SAT or ACT scores, so just study hard and you without a doubt recieve a well amount.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tip I really have is that this school is Baptist so we do have christian courses that we do take. I am not Baptist, I am Catholic, but even because of it I have learned new things and have gotten closer to God. Just make sure you are willing to take these types of courses and if going to a religion based school is what you want. There is nothing wrong with what religion you posses, being that we do have a vast variety of students who are of different religions.

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for any student who is up to anything. You will learn a lot, have a great experience, and become a better person. Its also great place for Pre-med students, being that we do have an excellent medical program. It is also great for spiritual students, being that we do take take religion seriously and would like to reach out to as many people as we can.

    Am learning a lot

HBU has a lot to offer for mostly everyone. However, we are on the smaller side for colleges so we do not have as much choices for majors as the public school or bigger private schools, which is understandable. But, with that said HBU has a lot of great professors in all of our majors that are willing to make each one of us learn to the best of our abilities. Believe me, I am a science major and boy am I learning a lot! Plus with HBU's small size we have a smaller ratio between us and our professors which is AWESOME because it helps not being just a number or another face in the classroom. Additionally, HBU is changing the curriculum to a more liberal-arts based foundation which will even further expand your education.

    Am enjoying being here

If I had a do-over and could pick my college again, my choice would still be HBU. I love it here! People are nice, caring, and just overall funny. Plus, we have a lot (maybe not compared to some other colleges) of extracurricular activities which people can get involved in. Oh and if we do not have a club that you are interested in on campus you can make one. As long as you follow the guidelines and get them approved HBU welcomes new organizations. My friends just made a Nerf club... I know we are all just big kids here!

    Bang for the buck

The truth is HBU is expensive. However, we have many financial aid opportunities with many scholarships and grants available. (You just have to work for them.) But with all that said HBU is worth every penny!!!

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Get the highest scores possible on the ACT and SAT because HBU gives higher scholarships for the higher scores.
    2. If you can choose to live on campus, do it! Living on campus is worth the room and board because people feel more at home and you get to know almost everyone.
    3. Get involved!!!

Great for these types of students

HBU is great for people who are hard working, people who loved to get involved, people who love to laugh and be goofy, and people who are open-minded. HBU also has a very, and I mean very competitive Pre-med and nursing programs, so if you want to be in the medical field and are dedicated to studying than choose HBU.

    Am learning a lot

All the teachers are well-rounded. Not only do they want to teach your education, but teach you wisdom, and about life. They actually care about being involved in your life, and that you are successful.

    Am enjoying being here

I have found friends among my teachers and classmates. It's very diverse, with different backgrounds. Everyone is very successful, and not dramatic.

    Bang for the buck

It is expensive, but the staff help you find scholarship and loans. It is well-worth paying the money. My father was without a job for a whole year, and I have still managed to make it through.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to a student who's involved, and also a professor about the school.

Great for these types of students

Christian, diverse, open-minded, hunger for learning, hungry to succeed.

I went for a visit to HBU and I was highly disappointed. The school needs much more modernizing. The freshman dorms that I was shown on the tour were terrible.. It kind of resembled a beat old run down motel. I was interested in their nursing program as well and once I toured the nursing school my hopes dropped. The nursing school is EXTREMELY competitive and not worth the money. About 150 or so apply to the nursing school, 30 are accepted, and only about 10-15 actually graduate and make it out of the nursing school. That is highly unacceptable. I even asked one of the current nursing students how her professors were... She hesitated and about 8 seconds later said They're alright.. That definitely wasn't the answer I was looking for.The school is more so focused on the best kids so they can make the school look better. You want a school that is willing to help even the lower kids and that is not what HBU is about. It's a great school if your really good with academics, big on religion and really want a very small school (about 2500). I was looking for something a little bit more fun, well rounded, and helpful. HBU just wasn't it. But what's best for me is different for someone else. Good luck on your college searching if you read this! (:

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely check the school out for yourself. The website is not that helpful. You really have to see what your getting in to and your whole mind perspective will be set. Warning you now: freshman dorms are terrible.

    Academic Rigor

The school is very very very serious when it comes to academics. I believe that's all their good for.

    Food and Dining

There's one cafeteria with food buffet-style. I guess it's okay. Nothing great.

    What to do for fun

Nothing. There's always religious services and activities to do, intramural sports and all that but it's definitely not a place to have fun as the typical freshman first year's experience.

    Bang for the buck

HBU is expensive but if you are really into your academics and focused on school then it is definitely worth it.

Great for these types of students

People who are highly focused on academics and academics only.

    Greek Life

Not much of a greek life.

    Campus Safety

Very safe. The entire campus is gated. Gates are closed at 11 pm each night, to get through the gates you have to say your full name and ID. Everything is pretty safe ON campus. OUTSIDE is a different story. The school is in the middle of HOUSTON so.. you can not really expect it to be really safe.

Houston Baptist is an excellent school. The professors know you by name, really care about you and want to see you succeed. It's small school so you get a lot of attention from your professors!

Houston Baptist is a great learning environment.

    Academic Rigor

    Dorms are excellent!

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot from the teachers and even more about myself. The way the professors teach and lecture (some of them) is helpful and encouraging for all kinds of knowledge. The curriculum is shaped in a way that you are learning spiritually and wholly in every class. It is a great feeling of unity.

    Am enjoying being here

HBU is my home. From over a year ago when I got married I moved here and have stayed for the whole time. I enjoy the atmosphere and location. It's a great home away from home whenever that will be after college. I love it.

    Bang for the buck

It is very expensive, but HBU has not given me a reason to feel it is not worth the price. It is a lot of money, but God is in control and he led me here with my husband and it has been nothing but good.

    Tips for prospective students

Know that God is in control when coming here. The price is not a reason to leave. Come with a plan on staying and the ride/journey will be worth the price. Be open and willing to change because college is a great lesson in life and it is a crazy experience. Live laugh and learn. But learning is the most important. It's not for everyone. And by it, I mean college. It's hard and you need the determination. HBU is also not for everyone, but there are many schools out there that are great and different. It's not like High School so don't think it will be. HBU is the best though, but I'm bias. :)

Great for these types of students

It's great for all walks of life. You won't know if it's for you unless you take a leap of literal faith. Trust God and the school could be for you.

    Am learning a lot

HBU is turning into a Liberal Arts college and focuses on the Classics of Literature. If you enjoy reading and discussions on the greatest literary works, this is the place for you. You will learn facts, but you will also learn how to think, how to learn in ways that better suit you. You can go beyond just your major, you can learn about things that never crossed your mind.

    Am enjoying being here

Although it is a small campus, there is a lot you can do off campus near downtown Houston. The smaller size gives it a more friendly air, and the dorms are pretty good. Most people complain about the food, just because it is cafeteria food, but I think it's pretty good. I enjoy how we try to do events, but they need to be more often and involve more better choices, but that's probably because everyone is strapped for cash. The residents usually leave the campus too often, or stay in their rooms too often, that's the only things that make it boring. Studying for big events is fun because everyone gets together and we throw parties.

    Bang for the buck

The best part of this college is that its size gives you more opportunity to learn in small classes for the same price as another big time college. Most of the teachers enjoy their jobs and make your money's worth work. The campus is working to give more enjoyment for the money's worth, but it is located in an ideal place in Houston to get to anything you want off campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Get up and go, this college will only deliver if your willing to take action. If you wait for something, you will miss all oppurtunities. This university is very religious, so be prepared for that. If your not used to that, it may be hard to enjoy yourself.

Great for these types of students

For literary students who enjoy reading, history and the arts, this place is good. It also carries an outstanding nurse and doctor program. It also is very intriguing for those looking for meaning in psychology, religious studies and sociology. It is for those who like the big questions.

    Am learning a lot

Since the first day of classes, we were immersed into learning. The professors are nice and kind and willing to lend a hand when you need it. All you have to do is ask for help and they gladly will sit with you and help you until you understand the concepts. Classes are small so you get more attention from the teachers and are able to learn better. Yes, sometimes it's frustrating having all classes give a test on the same week, but it's do-able.

    Am enjoying being here

The people are so nice here!! I was scared because no one I knew from high school was going to HBU, but I've made some really good friends. Students aren't mean and just having that Christian feel on the campus makes me feel right at home.

    Bang for the buck

HBU is pretty expensive. But in a way, the fact that not many people go to HBU makes your college experience all that more personal, at least classroom wise. HBU has a good reputation among employers, especially in the nursing department.

    Tips for prospective students

The workload at first might seem completely crazy, but manage your time and you can do it. You still will have time to have a social life, but I would take that as a second to my education.

Great for these types of students

If you want a place where you can freely worship, or a place to feel at home, this is for you. They don't force Christianity on you. They explain things to you, but they never force you to accept it if you don't believe the same way they do. They respect your own beliefs.

    Am learning a lot

Even though I have only been attending HBU from a few weeks I can truthfully say that I am learning a lot. I am taking my Christian classes that I need to graduate and being that I have never gone to church it has been quite interesting and eventful for me.

    Am enjoying being here

I spent my first two years of college at a community college and I am happy to say that I enjoy HBU much more. Every time I have a question and need some assistance, someone is there to help me. Or if they can not help me, they will find someone that can. The campus is clean and beautiful and everyone is so nice.

    Bang for the buck

This university is definitely expensive. Without scholarships I would not be able to attend. However, the environment and education you receive is well worth the money.

    Tips for prospective students

You need to be focused and dedicated, but it is a lot of fun. There are always events to attend and people to talk to.

Great for these types of students

HBU is probably more for the students who are dedicated and hard working, but also like to be a part of the community. It is also good to have a sense of faith.

    Will learn a lot

My best friend is in this school and she likes a lot. She said she is learning a lot and the school is very restrict with absences etc. However, a lot of professors does no have PhD. Most of them have only master degrees.

    Will enjoy being here

Very expensive with few activities. The financial Aid is very confusing and the Advisors are always changing personnel. In fact, the faculty members full time are the people who work as advisors as well. The disciplines are not clearly scheduled and students end up in (expensive) summer school, or with graduations delays

    Tips for prospective students

HBU do not transfer or recognize any class ( or credit) that was taken in online environment. Even if the classes are taken from State Universities like University of Houston or California State. They say that online classes are fake. ( ??? ) There is a rule in writing - they do not accept any credit from any online class! So if they know it they will not accept it.

Great for these types of students

If you do not want to take classes online, never ever. If you like small schools with little activities. If you like nice dorms and nice apartments ( available for resident students). If you like to learn religion at school - mandatory for all- ( even if it is not about your own religion). This is the right university for you.

I love my professors and the education I am receiving at HBU. I do not like the tuition increases, strict absence policy or how grades of finals are not given to students. Overall I think some of the recent changes are unnecessary, but I do like that HBU is a small Christian university (all my classes have had less than 30 students).

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you can afford tuition plus a dorm, otherwise commuting will use a lot of gas money. Take summer school! It's a great deal and will make sure you graduate in 4 years! Don't procrastinate on getting your 80 CLW/SLP.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers are usually easy to work with, but don't expect A's to be handed out like high school. I would definitely say it's harder than HCC or UH.

    Dorm Life

The Lakehouse is pretty one the outside, but walls are paper thin and fire alarms are annoying. Also there's only one set of elevators for all 6 floors and it does break sometimes. The Husky Village apartments are the way to go, but you have to be an upperclassmen.

    Food and Dining

The Baugh isn't the worst, but definitely not the best either. Other options like the Java City or Husky Express are better, but a little pricey.

    What to do for fun

Random events like dances or volleyball games in the colored sand.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition has increased way too much since I started my degree in 2008!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

HBU freshmen wear blue and orange beanies and have a tug of war

Great for these types of students

Someone who values a Christian education and hearing professors' viewpoints from this perspective. Someone who wants a small campus/class size with limited amenities, but can stand a high price tag.

    Greek Life

Phi Mu and AXO are the largest.

Blue lights around campus and police patrol. The surrounding SW area of Houston is questionable though.

HBU is an intimately sized, Christian-based campus with a very good journalism program. It has three different types of living quarters, which are mostly high-quality. It is also reported to have an excellent nursing/pre-med program.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to attend certains services created by Spiritual Life, as those services provide some of the 80 CLW credits you need to graduate. Also bring rain boots, as the campus has mild flooding semi-annually.

    Academic Rigor

The level of academic difficulty varies depending on the courses and teachers you take - some classes are more difficult than others.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are simple but effective and are normally cleaned by housekeeping staff at least once a week.

    Food and Dining

Food is usually satisfactory, although there are occasional lapses in quality at the cafeteria. There are alternatives, however: Tila's Taqueria, located in the Brown Complex, is open during the week.

    What to do for fun

There are frequently athletic events on campus, particularly basketball beginning in the late fall/winter and baseball beginning in the late winter/early spring. There are also leisure events organized by the Student Programming Board.

    Bang for the buck

There are numerous grants/scholarships given to offset the substantial cost of attending HBU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Freshmen typically wear beanies - blue and orange baseball caps - for the first week of classes. If they lose the annual tug-of-war with the upperclassmen, they are required to wear the hats for another week.

Great for these types of students

Those who are nursing or pre-med majors or who want to feed their spiritual lives as well as their academic/social lives will find great rewards here.

    Greek Life
