    Am learning a lot

I have learned more in the past year at Howard than I can honestly put into words. I have learned so much about Architecture my first year that I can confidently draft floor plans and elevations of a structure, and make a decent model of it, whereas at the beginning of the year I had no idea what a drafting board was. I feel as though I am also learning what it truly means to be an adult, and to be independent.

    Am enjoying being here

I already feel as though I have made life long friends here, people whom I really connect with and can relate to. Coming from a high school well known for its ethnic diversity, I was a bit worried that by going to an HBCU I wouldn't get that same environment, however Howard is diverse in many ways as well. A majority of the students are African American, however there are many students from around the globe, and I found the best thing was that everybody is diverse in thought, and through their experiences.

    Bang for the buck

Due to the fact that Howard is privately owned, it relies a great deal on donations from past alumni, and due to the economy of the U.S. at the moment, the costs for all colleges have risen, however HBCU's have been hit particularly hard. Howard is no different, and while there is no experience like the one found at HU, it is quite expensive. The current facilities such as the ones found in the Architecture building are undergoing a much needed overhaul, however that process takes time, and it is an inconvenience to the students at the moment. The teachers I have had so far are amazing however, and really care about my success, which is the most important thing to me.

    Tips for prospective students

For those who are planning to apply to Howard, make sure to not only focus on having a great GPA but get involved in extra-curricular activities, as Howard has a very active student body. Incoming freshman should make sure to stay on top of their registration process. Howard requires a lot of medical information from incoming freshman, and I know a few students who didn't get to stay longer than a month because they didn't take their registration process seriously.

Great for these types of students

Any student who loves to get involved, students who like an urban environment, and in particular those students interested in Architecture, Engineering and the Computer Sciences.

    Am learning a lot

Since I'm in the School of Business the curriculum proved to be challenging. I took 15 credit hours for my first semester freshman year and I could handle it. There are hundreds of classes to take and what's better is that you can choose what classes you want and which teacher which is a choice that I didn't have in high school. I've learned the most in my Business Orientation class about credit and how to invest money at an earlier age. During the first semester, the School of B students are put into teams where we are given different projects and presentations that we have to present to the class. These groups helped me learn how to work with others and how to formulate certain business ideas and how to market new products. Now that my first semester is over, I'm excited to see how much Howard will teach me in the coming years.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely LOVE the environment of Howard! There are so many different people here and I've found every person I've met to be intriguing. In my dorm, there are lots of socials that students can participate in and that will help you to meet lots of people. For instance, during the beginning of the year, my RA put together a girls night where we played games and had lots of treats to eat while getting to know each other. The residence hall council knows how to keep us interested by always decorating the lobby during Homecoming and Christmas and also throw many sessions about important issues such as recycling and campus safety. Aside from the social life, Howard has LOTS of opportunities that are open to everyone. There are so many activities to join that you may find yourself in many organizations and clubs within your first two months. I absolutely couldn't imagine going to any other school!

    Bang for the buck

While Howard offers a great education from a top HBCU, your bank account WILL decrease in size. For me, I have two scholarships and a loan that are taking care of my first year of freshman year and my parents are still struggling financially. During senior year, APPLY FOR AS MANY SCHOLARSHIPS AS POSSIBLE! Do not depend on Howard giving you any money if you are not one of the top students in your high school. Also, try to get parent or student loans which can help ease your financial woes during your years of schooling. Remember, you won't have to pay for them until you're out of school. Aside from those payments, your personal finances need to be taken into consideration. I can say that during my first four months, I spent $1,000 (something I'm not too proud of) and I didn't even make any huge purchases compared to my friends. Don't go crazy and go to clubs every weekend for $20-$40 (which is the normal price for most clubs) and think twice about buying that pal pack during freshman orientation. If you plan on buying groceries, settle for the generic brands and buy in bulk. My #1 rule was don't spend my money on unnecessary food like take out and dining out. Memorize those cafeteria hours and use that meal plan that your parents spent so much money on. Also, think about splitting the cost of cleaning supplies with your roommate. Try to apply for work-study or find a job near campus that you can work at part-time if your schedule allows. DC is an expensive place to live on or off campus so learn to deal with what have until you have some sort of money flow from home or your job.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't party too hard during your first semester. I know several people who will not be able to complete their education at Howard because they were the ones getting ready every Thursday/Friday/Saturday night for the club instead of studying. Also be aware of your surroundings. Travel in large groups during the night and use the shuttles as much as possible so you won't have to worry about walking back to the dorms all the way from the metro. When you're about to buy books for classes, ask upperclassmen and look around campus for flyers of people selling their books for cheaper than the bookstore prices. Join clubs and community service organizations to build up your experience for those future internships and jobs. Stay focused on your grades. It is, after all, the reason why you'll be here in the first place so why not sit down with a friend and study!! Use your professors' office hours and sit in the front of the class. Use study groups for help before big tests and finals. There are so many libraries that you can go for quiet time and research. Lastly, have fun. The next 4 years will change your life forever. Howard has birthed thousands of successful people and the legacy will continue with you if you put forth the effort.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who is open to many new opportunities and unforgettable experiences.

All students have Freshmen Seminar classes does not matter what major and you will recieve experiences that you wont get anywhere else.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being at Howard a whole lot. The experiences are fun for every type of student. If u enjoy parties on weekends there are numerous parties that occur every weekend. But if your a student who likes to stay in and read, we have many libraries open to all students and residents. Plus we are in the heart of DC so there is always something happening.

    Bang for the buck

Everyone know college is a investment. But with Howard if you invest properly it is easy to see how your investment grows. The numerous connections you make, the countless people who approach you trying to offer you a job and the networking skills you gain just by relaxing on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips to keep in mind is to stay focus. Do your best not to burn bridges because this is college and you never know who that person will be in a couple years. Work hard so you can play hard.

    Am learning a lot

I remember someone saying that when you graduate from Howard, you should be a master of three things: your major field of study, African-American Studies, and service. That rings absolutely true. I am learning so much from my major professors. Most are very helpful during their office hours and during class hours. Not only am I learning in my major, but I am also learning a ton about Blacks in America and worldwide. My alma mater teaches us our history from our OWN perspectives. Service to the community is also key. Howard's committment to the surrounding community and abroad is HUGE. Through volunteering, I have learned so much about my responsibilities and duties to the uplift of my community and race.

    Am enjoying being here

I am having a blast at Howard. Here, we work hard, but also play hard. There's so much to do in DC and on campus. There are literally parties every weekend (even though I don't recommend partying every weekend). There are also so many plays, concerts, panel discussions, and get-togethers on campus that are available to students. At Howard, I am NEVER bored. The opportunities you receive from being a student at Howard are also limitless. Howard has connections with some of the nation and world's most prominent companies, corporations, etc. Just this semester, a group that I am a part of on campus was able to travel to Jamaica at the invitation of the US Embassy there. So come to Howard. Between homecoming, ResFest, internships, organizations, you'll enjoy yourself at Howard.

    Bang for the buck

Howard is not cheap, and sometimes I feel that students pay too much for some of the simple problems that we have, such as lack of air conditioning in some of the dorms and buildings. But, relative to all of the other opportunities at Howard, those are trivial things. Howard offers a wonderful education in addition to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Even though I'm on scholarship, I feel as if students' monies are worth the experience at Howard.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! If you're interested in scholarships, apply early. Howard gives out money until all funds have been exhausted. If you're on the rocks about whether you want to attend Howard or not, come for a visit. I stayed at Howard for a weekend during my senior year of high school. That experience, seeing what Howard was really like, sealed the deal for me. If you've already decided that Howard is the place for you, make sure you come here with an open mind. There are people from ALL walks of life: different states, countries, religions. Learn to be accepting.

Great for these types of students

Howard is a great school for people who are go-getters. Howard can sometimes be an intimidating place, and it takes a person with a strong work ethic and determination to make it here at Howard. Here, nothing is ever handed to you, so Howard requires that you stay on top of your responsibilities at all times. If you're proactive, goal-oriented, and a person of African-descent that's interested in furthering your education amongst a talented group of people who share your same drive, HOWARD IS FOR YOU!

    Am learning a lot

At Howard University i am learning more than i ever imagined i could. As a chemical engineering student i grow more and more confident in my abilities. I have learned so much in a wide variety of subjects which range from English to taekwondo. Besides academics i am also learning how to be an adult in today's society. I came into Howard University without much and i know i will be leaving with so much more.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard University is in the middle of Washington D.C. If the Washington monument, the Abraham Lincoln memorial, to name a few, aren't enough, Washington D.C.'s metro will take you to a bounty of places including, Chinatown, Georgetown, and a whole lot of other equally interesting places. Within Howard University, a wide variety of events take place: movie nights, theater productions, dance performances, organized parties, and even all the internship promotions are fun. When its time to crack down and study there are a variety of places to do so; every dorm has lounges, there are three library's on campus fully equipped, and many computer labs. So i f someone were to ask me whether or not i was enjoying my self at Howard University, i would say, yes.

    Bang for the buck

At about $10,000 per semester, Howard is definitely a rare deal. Not only am i getting my money's worth education wise, i also get to use new facilities and participate in events, such as Howard University's homecoming that draw people form all over the world. Even with the low prices, Howard is still able to provide more than half the students with scholarships.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students, should be wary of the status of all their documentation. Copies of everything are a necessity. Besides that, students should come prepared with a goal and ambition. They must be open minded and remember to be tolerant.

Great for these types of students

Howard University is great for any type of student but all students should be ambitious, as such i am forced to write such a general response.

Attending Howard University is an experience like no other. Not only am I learning a lot about my particular field of study, but I am also learning a lot about myself and my history. Attending an HBCU is a one of a kind experience I would never trade. A popular phrase here at the Mecca is If you can make it at Howard you can make it anywhere If this isn't the truth then I don't know what is!!

    Am enjoying being here

I've met so many interesting people from all over the world. Students come from everywhere in the US, Africa and the Caribbean creating a very interesting atmosphere. Howard University is a melting pot of very diverse cultures, which has allowed me to broaden my horizons and open my mind to new ideas, foods, slang, and dress.

    Bang for the buck

The quality of learning, the various campus events, and socials are all worth the money one may be putting forth to stay at Howard.

    Tips for prospective students

Howard University is the place to be! If you are interested in attending an HBCU this is it. HU was the first HBCU and continues to be the best!

Great for these types of students

Any and all types of students, that's what makes Howard so great, its full of such a diverse group of students all working towards achieving similar goals.

    Am learning a lot

Howard has some of the most talented professors. Now that I'm a sophomore, I have come into contact with many intelligent professors with experience in many different disciplines. There are a wide range of backgrounds represented at Howard, and the learning environments, although dated, are amazing. Howard could definitely be a lot more technological with our learning experience, but there are moments when you don't recognize the lack. I have learned at lot at Howard, a lot about different things. It's amazing.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Howard, I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. But with any institution, there are downsides. The Administration Building could be a lot more organized, the staff could be friendlier, but that's just one factor in my rating. I enjoy being at Howard because of the people. There are so many people from different regions of the world, different walks of life, different economic standing and you see them all come together. When the weather is nice, it's very common to see people on the Yard doing homework, hanging with friends, see people playing music and dancing, or even some Frisbees being tossed. Howard is enculturated with so many people and cultures. It's truly a joy to be around so many different people. You would think because it's an HBCU that we all come from similar backgrounds, but we don't, and that's refreshing.

    Bang for the buck

Although Howard isn't the most expensive college, you do find that its financial aid lacks. I graduated in the top 25 of my class, with a 3.6 Grade Point Average, and didn't receive a scholarship. It's hard to receive institutional based scholarships once you're already in the system. Housing is overpriced for the lack of quality, and Residence Life is so complex that it makes you just want to live off campus. But if you look at it just for those factors, the bang for the buck is low, but if you calculate your total experience, its relatively inexpensive.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get sucked into the allure of Howard University social life. You will go on academic probation, and be kicked out for a semester. It's really not worth it. Of course, enjoy yourself, but don't get caught up. Howard provides many different forms of extra-curricular activities, so get involved! Don't come into Howard thinking that you're going to skate by that easily, some of the professors really have a no nonsense attitude and it won't work. Be sure to have all of your documents on hand at all time. Get copies of everything, and keep them in a folder. Howard will test your patience, but you must be prepared to provide facts when they do. Get your administrative and financial affairs in order prior to coming, it will make Freshman Week that much more enjoyable. Enjoy everything Howard has to offer and make friends. Rub shoulders with people you know nothing about, and watch how much you learn about different cultures. Last, but not least, BE YOURSELF. I advise prospective students to be confident in who you are and not to be easily conformed to anyone else's way of life. Live your own life.

Great for these types of students

Howard is great for any type of student. The community caters to those who are book-worms, and those who are the lives of the party. Which is why I love Howard, there is a mixture of types of students, and everyone mingles with each other so you never feel like the odd one out. Howard is for everyone, even those who may not be Black.

This is my second year at Howard and I can say that learning highly depends on the teacher. I have had some classes where I learned a lot like my anthropology class that I took with Mrs. Jackson, (but anthropology is a program that is now cut) and my illustration class that I had where I learned a lot. But as you will learn some teachers here enjoy teaching and some are just here for the paycheck and it becomes very evident which of the two you have once you have class.

    Am enjoying being here

For the most part, Howard has a lot of clubs and organizations, and a very active Greek life. There's always something to do here.

    Bang for the buck

For Howard to cost the 40,000+ that it does, honestly an in-state school would do just as well. This school relies mainly on it's name for being the Howard that it was many many years ago but it is in no way that way today. Nothing is up to date, most buildings are old and run down. Some of the dorms don't have air conditioning such as the freshman dorms, that should be taken into consideration when applying.

    Tips for prospective students

DO NOT TRANSFER HERE. I came into Howard as a transfer student and I wouldn't recommend it at all. Most likely most if any of your credits will not transfer. They will tell you that they cannot transfer simply because you didn't take those classes at Howard so therefore the classes you took at your other school is not the same. If you were to transfer the best and only time that I would is freshman year anything after is basically a waste of money because you will LOSE your credits. I have also learned being here that customer service is not a part of anyone's job here so be prepared to deal with attitudes and people who are unhelpful. With that being said say prayer before entering the A building (the administrative building). Before applying to this school do your research and read all reviews. Reviews are like warnings and what to prepare for before coming here. When I toured the school and spoke to a student about Howard, and when they told me that they wouldn't send their dog to Howard I thought it couldn't be that bad, but I definitely understand now.

Great for these types of students

Students who like to be involved with clubs and orgs., students interested in Greek life. Students who are majoring in the top four: Business, Communications, Medicine, and Law.

    Am learning a lot

In my selection process in choosing colleges and universities I had heard a lot of negative things about HBCU's entirely. However, when I mentioned Howard University I would constantly be reminded that it is the Mecca of Black Learning and Academia I can't fully support that notion. I am a first semester Freshman so my classes aren't too overwhelming (English, Japanese, Intro to African American Studies) and surprisingly I'm not overwhelmed. What is disappointing, especially in Intro to Afro American Studies is that the class is a breeze. I just feel as I am not being challenged enough. Although I am not enrolled in a Mathematics course, I've heard that they're are a lot of foreign professors that students can't quite learn from because of their inability to speak clear English and their refusal to give thorough lectures. I understand that College is pretty much a Do it Yourself attitude, but I didn't pay 30+ thousand dollars to completely teach myself. CHALLENGE ME, ENLIGHTEN ME! I'm not getting that as much as I would like.

    Am enjoying being here

I had heard so many good reviews about the student population. I felt that coming here I would come in to touch with artists, and people with abstract minds, or just people that had simple common sense. BUT, it's a big beauty pageant/fashion show. It's so much emphasis on what someone has on their body rather then what someone has going on in their mind. After two weeks of being here I concluded that Howard is another private high school in which everyone has pretty clothes, and bougie attitudes. Women outnumber men here, so there are a lot of young ladies throwing themselves at the guys, and the young men eat it up. Arrogant, that's what I would describe a lot of people. But if you look hard enough, and don't allow yourself to get caught up in the {IN}crowd, #trendsetters, and TNB clicks you might find yourself a solid group of friends.

    Bang for the buck

That truly depends on which division you're in. You have School of B, School of C, and COAS. Now School of B & C have an abundance of money because their fields are very specific so there's a lot of money coming in from sponsors. COAS is so broad ranging from Fine Arts, political science, to Pre Pharmacy...that's a lot of majors. They don't have a lot of money for scholarships and a lot of ambitious students can't stay at the school because of financial reasons. And the A Building....they will take you. There was a girl here who paid all of her tuition and due to disorganization and lack of updates they waited until 2 weeks before school to tell her she couldn't come because they had lost records of her payments. It's a very expensive school and tuition rates rise each year and there is no effort for developing a good administration. OK academia, iffy population, HORRIBLE administration=not the best place to submerge yourself in. I think Howard banks off it's legacy of who went here before.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have very very very good grades and standardized test scores because the chances of you getting a scholarship are slim to none. Please oh please have plenty of outside scholarships because it's almost $40,000 for incoming freshman and believe me you do not want to take out a $20,000 loan. Make sure that you make no expectations of this place or the people, you'll get dissapointed in that way. Make sure you're on top of all of your records, keep every document you'll most likely have to encounter the wayward administration. Get everything done before the due date!

Great for these types of students

Students who love to network, and an environment that is very fashion-oriented.

I have only completed one semester at Howard so far and throughout my courses I have learned a generous amount of things. Although most of the classes are just for review I have learned the most in my business orientation class. I have learned about being a professional, business etiquette, and how to dress when you are attending certain business functions.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard to me is a good school, I have expanded my network within one semester and I have met professionals from different corporations. The social aspect of the school is great, there is always an event taking place on campus and I am continuously meeting new people everyday. Although I do not live on campus I do enjoy being at Howard.

    Bang for the buck

I am in the school of business so I can only speak about my experience in the school of business. I think that I am getting all I can get for my money. I have learned many things within the school of business, met professionals from big corporations, been exposed to many job opportunities, learned how to build my resume and interviewing skills and working on a team of composed of 15 students to complete projects.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are entering the school of business, be prepared to work hard and work on a team composed of about 15-25 students. You have to know how to work on a team because that is what you will be doing for your whole freshman year. Also, if you think you are going to come to Howard to party and have fun 24/7, think again because Howard is big on seeing their students strive for excellence.

This University will teach you how to survive on your own. I am a freshman at Howard and I am learning to survive on my own in this society. If there is one thing that Howard will teach you besides academically, will be to watch out for yourself and to stay on top of everything. Socially I am still learning that you have to be willing to go out on a limb to network, to meet people, to get yourself out there for opportunities. The professors will not baby you and that is one of the hardest lessons that I am still learning . In high school your teachers cut you slack, but here they will not, they will help you if you reach out and ask for their help but besides that you are virtually on your own. Howard is definitely a learning experience.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Howard socially, but administration will test your endurance and your will. I would advise not to come in to Howard as an undecided major. The counselor that you are assigned to has so much other things and people to deal with that undecided majors are pushed to the bottom of the list most times. You have to be persistent with everything at Howard. EVERYTHING. It is better to come in with a major in mind, even if you are not sure if you want to stick with that major. Being an undecided major at Howard is hard work, so if that is what you want be prepared. Socially, Howard is wonderful, it is easy to network, to meet people with similar interest and goals, as well as people from all over the world.

    Bang for the buck

When you attend Howard, you are paying for the name. Besides everything else, the Howard University name will get you a lot of places. It opens doors for you and there is always someone in a high position that will respect the name Howard University and consider you more carefully. The professors at Howard are older, most of the staff is older, but is worth it. You have to want whatever you are attending Howard for really bad to survive.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of all of your paper work. Make copies of everything. Be prepared to wake up early in the morning to stand in financial aid and student account lines. Be open and social at all times, even on your bad days, you never know what opportunities will present themselves. Explore the campus before you have classes, and explore DC. Always ask, even if its for help, advice, information, no matter what ask! someone will have an answer for you. Always keep your individuality , be you, and find what works for you .

Great for these types of students

Open minded students, determined students, and social students.
Intelligent and unique individuals as well.

My freshman year I didn't learn nearly as much as my sophomore year. This year, I learned about things inside and outside of the classroom. The professors challenge you and force you to think outside the box. Although, you do learn a lot of book smarts, Howard University teaches you street smarts. You learn the importance of networking, and the power of who u know, not what you know. You learn persistence and endurance, and the power of the community.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard University is my dream school. There is no other school that, in my opinion, compares. You are afforded so many wonderful opportunities here. It's amazing to be around so many young black people doing positive things. It is a very competitive school, and motivates you to always grind. Though there is a lot of partying, students know when to get their work done. It's a fun environment.

    Bang for the buck

Howard University is a private institution and is very costly. I don't feel as if you're getting your moneys worth due to the quality of the dorms, and lack of technology. However, a lot of the professors are distinguished and do a lot of work in research. You're more so paying for the name and prestige of the University, rather than the knowledge you acquire being here.

    Tips for prospective students

Some helpful tips would be to make sure you get to know the dean of your school and any other people in power. They will be able to help you financially and write you great reccomendations. Make sure that you know your advisor and speak with them throughout they year, not just when it's time to register. Don't party until you get your work done, there will always be parties, but there may not be another opportunity for your grade. Get to know your professors as well, a lot of times if you have a relationship with your professor, they may be more willing to help you.

Great for these types of students

Howard University has a wonderful business school, as well as medical school. I think it would be great for student's interested in those careers.

    Will learn a lot

I truly believe that Howard has a lot to offer hypothetically speaking, From what I've researched about this University its potentially a very good school. Acceptance doesn't promise you good grades, your study habits and how seriously you take this opportunity does. Take advantage of Howard.

    Will enjoy being here

I believe so, campus social life and University setting seems enjoyable so yea.

    Bang for the buck

Seems expensive but if you choose the right major success will pay it back.

    Tips for prospective students

STUDY 75% of the time if not more.
    PARTY 25% of the time.

    Am learning a lot

At Howard University, I am indeed learning a lot. I am currently an interior design freshman and already I have been taught skills in regards to my major and have been taught skills that will help me survive in the industry. My education started the first day I stepped foot on campus.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy attending Howard University! Just based on the opportunities the school's legacy offers Howard University is the school to attend. The atmosphere of the school is very energized. The urban location is another plus to the school.

    Bang for the buck

The opportunities and experiences will more than counteract the cost of attending Howard University.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip I would give prospective students is to apply early decision and apply for as many scholarships as possible.

    Will learn a lot

I have just recently visited this institution and I am excited about applying later on this school year. They have excellent programs in almost every subject imaginable.

    Will enjoy being here

The students here are very enthusiastic about their university and will represent it proudly. They always have some sort of event going on.

    Bang for the buck

Although this university is on the expensive side, they have a lot of scholarships to be given out. Also, when applying for scholarships, the offices don't just look at the grades, the GPA, and the standardized test scores. You truly have to be a well-rounded student to get the things you're looking for.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice is to do as must as possible online so that nothing gets lost, don't slack off, anytime! Especially not your senior year. Get involved in your school, they look for that!!!!!

Great for these types of students

Every type of student is welcome here, you just have to be focused and determined.

At Howard University I am constantly learning beyond textbooks. Although Howard has great professors who take their time out to work with you, you learn more from the environment. Howard's environment is VERY political, there are always elections for something going on. Howard also, pushes you to be more that what you think you can be.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at Howard University ! The people here are so genuine and friendly. At Howard you are never in need, whether you are borrowing a textbook, microwave or need someone to party with. There is always something to do.

    Bang for the buck

Howard University is a very expensive school. Many students wonder what all of that tuition money is being used for. The buildings need A LOT of renovation, some dorms do not have A/C. Many people believe we are paying the extra money because of the legacy Howard University holds.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about coming to Howard University think long and hard. Make sure your grades are EXCELLENT, have a 3.57 G.P.A. and at least a 27 on your ACT, to get a scholarship. You will want a scholarship so start searching now.

Great for these types of students

Howard University is a great school for the type of students who love to compete, dress up and have fun. You will love Howard if you have great people person skills and like to be involved.

I go to my dream school - the Mecca, Howard University! It's located in our nation' capital which I love. I love the historic feel about this city. The White House, the Monument; everything about it. I truely love my school and I'm glad I chose to go here. There is always something to d on and off campus. The business program is really great because they offer a lot of interns to business major students. My class, as well as every class, is so well connected and so close that you're bound to meet someone who knows someone who knows someone lol. I would not go anywhere else.

    Am enjoying being here

Because there are a lot of universities located in DC, you're bound to go to at least one Georgetown U. or George Washington U. party, when there are no parties on Howard's campus.

    Bang for the buck

I feel like Howard students should get what they pay for; there is no air conditioning in the freshman double female dorms but most triples have it. Depending on where you stay it's optional to get a meal plan, but freshmen are required to get one. The tuition at Howard is very expensive, but the experience there is well worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep in mind with you're friends are or who you run into because you're bound to meet someone that knows someone that you know.

Great for these types of students

For all types of students! As long as you're ambitious enough to succeed at Howard.

Every aspect of campus-life at Howard University has been a learning experience for me whether academic or social. Everything Howard University offers gives the student the opportunity to learn, think, and understand.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard University is my home away from home. When I imagined a college for myself, I wanted a school that could offer me an education, a positive atmosphere, and people that care. I love Howard University.

    Bang for the buck

I believe that the information one learns and attains at Howard University surpasses the cost for attendance.

    Tips for prospective students

I would encourage students to keep track of documents sent to the school. They should stay on top of the financial office. Also, students should take advantage of every learning experience such as study abroad programs offered at Howard University.

I am really enjoying the architecture program at Howard. Every class in the program has a relevance and eventually connect to the core class, Design studio. And after 3 years learning about architecture, I think the most valuable thing I've learned is how much more I have to learn.

    Am enjoying being here

The people at Howard are amazing. The students are friendly and the teachers are extremely helpful. The dorms may not be the best and neighborhood is slowly being gentrified but the sense of community among the campus is irreplaceable. It's especially apparent when you meet and alumnus. A Bison loves helping a fellow Bison!

    Bang for the buck

Like I said before, the facilities aren't the best. However, Howard works to maintain what they have and they are slowly becoming more and more technologically advanced.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for housing EARLY. Howard has plans for new dorms, but they probably won't be built for quite some time still. Also, make sure you are on top of deadlines, financial aid, registration, etc. The administration can become very confusing and frustrating. Keep calling, keep emailing, visit until you have all your affairs in order.
Work HARD and stay on your toes. You don't have to be particularly talented or smart to succeed but if you're lazy or easily discouraged, Howard is NOT the place for you.

Great for these types of students

I am a psychology major and I have had some great psych teachers! I enjoy sitting in those lectures because that is what interests me. As far as my other teachers, they have enlightened me a lot as well except for many of the math teachers who are often hard to understand if you do not already have a strong mathematical background.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard is a really fun school if you are active but, if you choose to stay to yourself throughout your four years of college you will not get the REAL Howard experience!

    Bang for the buck

Howard is EXPENSIVE! I believe that some of the money that can go towards things that need fixing such as the fact the most of the freshman dorms have no air conditioning and are extremely old are going to frivolous places. But, I will say that I have learned a lot from this school and enjoyed myself none the less.

    Tips for prospective students

When getting to Howard reputation is KEY! Keep your head in the books and only bring them out during weekends or when you have free time. Do not burn any bridges because Howard is full of intelligent black young men and women who could possibly bring you a step up in the future. Also, NETWORK as much as you can because the amount of opportunities that pop up on Howard's campus is endless.

Great for these types of students

Howard is great for students who can stay focused on their own and, are willing to put in the work to be successful!

I have grown and learned so much at Howard University not just in the classroom but also about myself and the outside world. The classroom sizes are intimate and the professors truly care about you getting the most out of your education at Howard. I can also say that I've learned a lot outside of the classroom also just by being in the nation's capitol and being presented with many enriching opportunities.

    Am enjoying being here

I have really enjoyed my first year at Howard. There is always something to do around campus and around the city. I have gotten extra enjoyment from being in the marching and concert bands at Howard. This has lead me to finding amazing friendships that I feel will last for a very long time.

    Bang for the buck

Although Howard is private and therefore a bit on the expensive side, I still feel as if I am getting a quality education that could not be duplicated anywhere else. Howard has a very good value considering the quality of education you are paying for and I really do feel as if I'm receiving the best.

    Tips for prospective students

If I were to give any tips it would be to not get caught up in all the great activities that Howard has to offer and let it hinder your focus on school work and grades. I would also suggest finding all the scholarships that you can in order to help pay for Howard as it tends to get expensive. You also have to keep copies of all financial aid and administrative paper work because the Administrative A Building is notorious for messing up financial aid.

Great for these types of students

Howard is great for any student who is involved in their community, studious, and cultured. Howard is considered the Mecca and is the perfect place for students who want the very best out of life.

As a sophomore the class load is considerably greater than when I was a freshman. One, as a freshman many of your classes are trying to accustom you to the lifestyle and work ethic associated with college. However, do take these introductory classes seriously because they are the building blocks to your success in the future. Other than that be careful when choosing your teachers for classes. Sometimes the most difficult teachers are the best teachers and the teachers who are the worst well they are just the worst. Either way always make the best of your situation because they are giving you a grade at the end of the semester.

    Am enjoying being here

Howard University is known for their campus life from organizations, parties, and athletic games. Also, there are so many different people here from all over you're bound to bond with someone that could potentially be your best friend for life. However, although there's always and I mean always something going on prioritize your time for class because it will affect your grades drastically. There have been plenty of people who have had to leave after their freshman year for a semester or even a whole year because they just couldn't get their grades together. There are people who can do it but those are very few and far between. So always remember if you're going to party hard also remember to study just as hard.

    Bang for the buck

I gave this category a 3 because many of Howard's buildings and dorms are older and in need of some repairs. Also the technology that is present on the campus needs some upgrading. However, this is being worked on and hopefully will be upgraded in due time. As far as the money you are paying for tuition and board I would definitely say be sure to invest in any and all FREE money (i.e. scholarships, grants, etc) if you are choosing to attend here. Yes, you may be the best in your class but Howard is full of valedictorians, National Merit scholars, varsity athletes, prom kings & queens, and community volunteers. Thus, the pool of the available scholarships becomes extremely competitive and will sometimes leave out those who qualify but are not quite as competitive. So again be sure to apply for as many scholarships you qualify for and always have a back up plan in case you have to pay out of pocket. Also, it is extremely expensive to live in any city including Washington, D.C. so do set limits for yourself especially during Homecoming because although it's nice to enjoy that one week remember there will be many more chances for you to enjoy yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Be yourself; many people come and try to become a Howard girl or man when they are not. Being in college you will change enough don't overdo it.
Always be aware of your surroundings; this is an open campus in a city.
There is nothing like Howard in the springtime!

Great for these types of students

Socialites; athletes; multitaskers; entrepreneurs; interested in politics, entertainment, business; want to go to the best and the first HBCU in the country

    Tips for prospective students

To prospective students looking to come to the Mecca be prepared to deal with the Administration Building and Financial Aid. Before you even think about applying for this school make sure you have scholarships lined up.prepared to fight for a scholarship or take out LOANS. Other than the financial aspect of the school , which you shouldn't let scare you away, social wise you will LOVE Howard. So many prominent people come to visit the school around the year and you could walk in class one day and hear that Al Sharpton or John Legend are on campus. It's a lot of ups and downs but being at the Mecca is what you make of it and you have to be prepared to work hard because it is highly competitive.

From the moment I stepped foot on this campus I have learned so0o0o much . I feel that I have grown and benefitted from this learning experience that I could not have had in a CUNY school. Apart from academics, I'm learning how to be independent, responsible, self-reliant, and aware. I'm basically learning how to fend for my self; survival skills. I knew that I would gain this from being away at school but didn't it would happen so early in my freshmen year of College. Here at Howard I am exposed to different types of people from all walks of life. I am so glad I can take what I learn from them back home.

    Am enjoying being here

I am definitely having a great time! The parties are fun, I found people that I can relate and befriend. I like the nice parts of DC, a very interesting city but nothing like New York City. My professors are also very interesting with their teaching styles and experiences.

Its definitely expensive so I cannot stress how important doing well in high school is. If you do great, I scholarship will be waiting for you. However, if you forget what you came there for during any year there, it will be taken away. And for those that didn't do so well in high school do not give up hope. There are many trustee scholarships and respective school scholarships for those that strive to improve.

I'm learning more than I can imagine! Even the simplest lectures become important. Howard does not offer learning solely in the classroom, but outside the class room as well. from group learning to independent learning, i have experienced it all in my first year. One of the greatest things about being educated at Howard is, even if you do not want to, you always seem to want to go beyond what is going on in the classroom and research things for yourself.

    Am enjoying being here

I love my HBCU! The people, the sites, the events, the classroom, the whole enchilada!

    Bang for the buck

Now I'm not saying that Howard has the cheapest education in the world, because Lord knows it does not. But I will say that Howard provides education and a great college experience that does make every penny you spend on college, worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

My advice for aspiring Howard students is to go in with a focus and remain focus. With so many events going on on campus it maybe a little distracting, so remember why you are there!

Great for these types of students

Howard is great for any student who is willing to go the extra mile to get their degree. As well as those who are very sociable, you meet so many new people. Although Howard is a historically black college/university, i believe that anyone who is willing to learn and meet people along the way is great for this school .

I am learning more than I thought I was, you really just have to pace yourself and try to get use to the level of pace that the professors are at. Some classes that I have taken in High school and I remember from high school, you will notice that there are more in-depth topics that were not explain in high school. So, I would say that Howard academics will challenge you at the start, but after a while you will retain more information.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being here in this atmosphere of all different people and to see what they can bring to the table. The events that are at this school are legendary being homecoming and its festivities.

    Bang for the buck

Howard University is a private college, so you will end up paying more than going to a public in-state school. The education and their effort of keeping you in school longer than other college is great so that students can get their degree faster.

    Tips for prospective students

For students that are planning to come should prepare themselves for reading a lot of information in their textbooks for classes. Also, take as many AP courses in high school so that you are ahead of class in order to get core classes out of the way.

Great for these types of students

Its great for students of any kind. Howard is probably stronger for student who are pursuing careers in law, divinity, engineering, fine arts, sciences, or business.

The university is located in DC so everything is also more expensive. Also, it being a private school factors in to the tuition because most of the money comes from Alumni and Donations. But it is worth it because of the education and the life of attending a HBCU.

So far, from what I have read, I will be learning a lot here. I want to get into the School of Communications, and from what I have heard (here and from youtube) the education is like no other. They say, it is a spiritual and educational experience at Howard, and I am willing to experience it.

    Will enjoy being here

OH YES! I say it in CAPS! I heard the life at Howard is live. Its the Mecca! Your motto, we go hard to play hard is a reflection of the social life at this school. While they (meaning HU students) are going to many parties, they still know how to get their study on. Howard is my number one school, and the social life here influenced my decision on applying her a little bit. I am very social and very outgoing, and i wanted to be around people who shared the same trait.

    Bang for the buck

I dont really know, I am only a sopho. in High School. But, so far from what I have heard, Howard has a great learning enviornment, that not only focuses on learning in the classroom, but how we can connect what we learn to Real Life. I find, that when we can interact with things outside of the classroom that is where good learning begins.

    Tips for prospective students

I am a prospective student. Im just going to say this, I have been wanting to attend Howard U. since forever. I can not see myself in any other institution. I encourage everybody to do their research on the school. I have, and i have gained a great amount of knowledge. I also suggest tha each student goes on Youtube.com and look at the videos. HUReaction, is a great source of what the school is like behind the scenes. It is produced by students for the students (prospective or current), the videos are hilarious but yet very educational about the school. Also, i suggest that you know the real reasons why you want to come to Howard. Dont just say because you saw the videos, be genuine.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, Ambitious, and great for African-Americans thus and such any type of race.

Stay focused and never procrastinate. Howard University has a large amount of activities to offer any student, but it can become overwhelming if one becomes involved in too much.

    Academic Rigor

As an engineer, the academic rigor is very difficult but also achievable. Find ways to gain assistance through your professors and outside of faculty.

    Dorm Life

As a freshman, one will gain a very satisfying dorm life. The facilities may not be as good as other campuses, but you will meet great people.

    Food and Dining

The food becomes very repetitive and there is not much to choose from.

There are a large amount of things to do in DC for free. The museums, films on the National Mall, statues, and many other things are free.

    Clubs and Activities

I am the president of the National Society of Black Engineers. I love this organization and it has done great things for me as far as scholarships, leadership experience, and networking. There are hundreds of clubs on Howard's campus. Anyone can find one or two to call their own and put all their efforts into.

    Campus Safety

Many people are robbed surrounding the campus so always be sure to use the buddy system when traveling at night.

Howard University is a great school for networking purposes. Students/Faculty/Staff have a great opportunity to work together and meet with each other to accomplish goals in and outside of the classroom. Howard University is a melting pot of academic potential.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay ahead of the game, especially when it comes to working with administration. You have to remember that there are lots of students at the school dealing with numerous circumstances. Because of that, administration may not be a sensitive to your particular situation as you may like. Just look at this as a time to test your tolerance and understanding as you will need it in the workforce.

    Academic Rigor

College is as challenging as you make it. Your classes can be extremely difficult or extremely easy. It is all up to how much effort you are willing to put into your academic experience.

    Dorm Life

It's not the best. You may feel that being an adult should give you unlimited amounts of access to your peers in your dorm. Howard University has a visitation policy, whether you adhere to those rules is your personal decision.

    Food and Dining

The food is not the best cuisine in the area, but it will do. It's great for the first month, but then the menu gets a little repetitive. Fortunately, the student involvement here is great on campus, so they are always looking for ways to improve food and dining on campus.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on at the Mecca. Signing up to receive e-mails about what's happening at Howard is the best way to stay in the loop about all the events taking place on campus.

Departments that need improvement: financial aid, reslife and the math department. We as students pay alot and should recieve more, its a constant debate amongst students and administration.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have a back up plan,a back up plan for housing and a cushion and alternative for how you plan to pay for school. Handle all things with Howard im person NOT over the phone and never take no for an answer there is always a way. Lastly get involved in as many extracurricular activities, start off how you want to end(its much easier to maintain and gpa than to increase it and many things on campus require a GPA) and start looking for internships your first semester, build relationships with your professors.

    Academic Rigor

The work isnt as dIfficult but keeping up with your scheme for your major is..the advisors dont micro-manage and many times right before graduation is when someone's told they cant graduate because they are missing a class.

    Dorm Life

    Great experience,facilities need MAJOR improvement.

    Food and Dining

Great food selections, they have something for everyone.

    What to do for fun

EVERYTHING. There is an organization and club of interest for everyone. Get involved.

Howard University is a prestigious university that is about its business. There is a very strong sense of student community, however the connection between administration and the students is poor. While challenging, the university undoubtedly lines up a number of opportunities for you if you work for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your work. It is so easy to be consumed by the tremendous social life at Howard, however if you remind yourself of your goals on a daily basis and allow yourself to balance work and play, you will guaranteed have the best four years of your life at the school. Lastly, do not wait until last minute for any assignment or opportunity, they will pass, and you will start to regret your lack of action. Be efficient, and just do what you have to do!

    Academic Rigor

Coming from the International Baccalaureate program my freshman year courses were not as bad as I thought they were going to be. Especially in the language department and english, however math and the sciences are no joke at all. You must work hard and ask for help in those courses, or you will be a lost student struggling the entire semester.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the Annex which is by far the best of the freshman dorms, however the rules and regulations are ridiculous. There is no need for the separation of gender, a curfew, and constant nagging by the people in the housing department. Also they are unorganized and consistently lose your mail. As grown students, we should be able to live the lives we choose to live without housing manipulating how many people you can see, at what times, for what days.

    Food and Dining

Personally, I like the food. While there is little variation, it will do its job and for the most part it is available for students at reasonable times. However 24-hour dining or at least extended dining over the weekends would be better for college students who are out and about at all times of the day and need to eat.

    What to do for fun

Everything! DC is so easily accessible by the metro and an incredible college town. There is always a party or club scene on the weekend, and if that isn't your thing there are comedy clubs, plays, dining, museums, historic sites, movies, bowling, you name it. It is an incredible city.

    Bang for the buck

It is pretty expensive but just like any college or university you will get out of it what you put into it. If you explore the city and the campus and work hard you will enjoy your time. If you wait until last minute, do not balance your time between work and play, and start to re-prioritize your life for the worst you will not enjoy your time. It is all about what you make it. I think it is worth it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The punchout is a great place to go eat and enjoy the social scene because since you do not need a meal plan in there all of the grades are in there and it's a nice place to have lunch. On first fridays as well it is a great scene to experience the bison pride as students eat and listen to music.

Great for these types of students

Focused, dedicated to their future, involved, creative, passionate.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs from state clubs, to student government. There is no reason for you not to be involved because with all of the organizations and opportunities, you will always find something and someone to relate to.

    Greek Life

Howard is the home of many of the greek organizations so the greek life is active on campus but never overwhelming.

    Campus Safety

Howard is an open campus so there are situations every now and then in the community. Just like on any campus do not make foolish decisions and go out at three in the morning by yourself, you are a walking target. Just be logical and travel in groups and there will more than likely not be an issue.

Howard is a great challenge with great fun. It is easy to have a bit too much fun but those who stay focused have a world of opportunity. This University is perfect for anyone of all races and backgrounds.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont get caught up in the party scene. Make copies of all paperwork and take control of your finances, nobody will baby you anymore. Be ready to fall in love with your school GO BISON!

    Academic Rigor

Class is as hard as you make it. Must study and stay on top of grades because professors don't take sob stories. All math classes are very hard.

    Dorm Life

Great! Very competitive between freshmen dorms in an annual ResFest competition. I stepped for my dorm and had a blast. Really makes the freshman experience!

    Food and Dining

The Annex dorm has its own cafeteria which is good. There is also a main cafeteria next to a food court. This year we had a chinese restaurant, italian food shop, and World of Wings. We also have a Potbelly on campus we can use part of our meal plan for.

    What to do for fun

Just about everything there is. Howard never sleeps! Always a panel, fashion show, party, protest, or random activity going on such as hide and go seek around campus! We also have a gym and bowling alley.

    Bang for the buck

Although Howard can be a bit expensive, there is ample opportunity for scholarships and grants. Every penny is worth the experience you get!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Yard is the place to be! So much fun in the center of campus. Homecoming especially!

Great for these types of students

For any type of student, there is opportunity and fun to be had! Especially those interested in African American culture and history.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club/org. for EVERYTHING! There is always a group putting events together and something to join. The issue is limiting yourself in how much you join.

    Greek Life

Greek life is very big at Howard. Prestigious fraternities and sororities for just about every major and/or interest. Howard is all about networking an this is a quick way to start to build a strong network.

    Campus Safety

Campus police are in most places but there could be more. We do have an escort service to provide safe transportation when its really late.

I really love this school. Its a fight for some things but you have to stay on top of it, keep fighting, and start early. It will be a great experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Make the best class decisions. Don't take too hard of classes too early.

    Academic Rigor

    Challenging yet manageable.

    Dorm Life

Stay on campus the first two years.

    What to do for fun

Its a big city and there are plenty of fun things and opportunities, much more than you would get in a simple college town. You can take the subway practically anywhere, check out history and or a movie in minutes.

Great for these types of students

I would recommend Howard an and HBCU in general to African American students who have lived or went to school in white areas.

    Clubs and Activities

Theres a lot to join, I wish I could have done more. Start early.

    Campus Safety

The area outside campus can be a little questionable at times but you really have to just be conscious and utilize the shuttle system when its dark and you'll be fine. Don't be too flashy, but I feel these rules will apply anywhere. I'm totally safe on campus though.

The campus is fun and lively. Professors are very challenging, but they are equally helpful. Great environment to grow as a person and begin your career.

    Tips for prospective students

Get Involved! There is an abundance of clubs on campus for basically every interest, and if yours isn't there then try to start a club for it. Grades come first, but getting involved in the campus life is important in taking full advantage of what the school has to offer.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be challenging, but I would have to only give it 4 stars because the professors and other students are very helpful.

    Dorm Life

It all depends on which dorm you end up in. If your a young woman and end up in the annex then you are in luck because its the best dorm on campus right now, you have your own cafeteria and great rooms. If you are in the quad then it can be a hit or miss. For the guys drew is pretty dirty, but it is hyped up as the best. If you end up in carver people will jokingly trash talk, but it is the best dorm for freshmen males.

    Food and Dining

When it comes to the Cafe it all depends on when you come, and if you like soul food. On most days you never know what the cooks will come up with, it can be either really good or really bad. Every Thursday they have Soul Food Thursday which is pretty good, but its always the same so after a while it gets pretty boring.

    What to do for fun

The school is in the heart of Washington, DC so there is a lot to do depending on your interest. There are a lot of clubs on-campus that you can join. The Smithsonian museums are close by and there are various event that go on at the National Mall. You can also go shopping in nearby areas such as Gallery Place, Georgetown, Pentagon City Mall, and PG Plaza. If you are into parties then there are plenty that are Howard affiliated, or one of the many nearby clubs, or if you want to adventure out then you can crash a party at one of the surrounding schools. And of course the legenenday Howard Homecoming!

    Bang for the buck

Its a great value if you take advantage of what it has to offer.

Great for these types of students

Best for students who are truly about here business, and having fun doing it. What I mean by this is that we work really hard here because its necessary to succeed, but we make sure to make the journey fun.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty for every type of student ranging from State clubs to bowling clubs to freshman organizations.

    Greek Life

Howard University is the Mecca for Black Greek Letter Organizations. They have the entire Divine 9 of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and many are the alpha chapters. Beyond BGLOs there are also band fraternities such as Kappa Kappa Psi, business fraternities such as Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Kappa Psi, plus many more.

    Campus Safety

Despite being in an area that is often considered the hood the campus is pretty safe. The area is being rejuvenated and the local and campus are always on patrol to ensure safety. The are also alert boxes located on campus and cell phone alert systems available to assist in student safety.

Howard University is an academically challenging party school. The students know when to have fun and when to be serious. Everyone is pushed to their full potential.

    Tips for prospective students

You don't have to go to every party! Sometimes it's better to miss that one party to study than to fail a class. There will be plenty other chances to have fun at HU. Make sure to participate in things. Mix 'n' mingle! Networking is a good way to keep informed and to make life-long friends. Take advantage of every oppoutunity possible.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be difficult (this is college what did you expect) and sometimes the teachers make easy classes difficult because they expect the best. Ratemyprofessor.com will soon become your best friend when choosing classes. Remember that you're there to learn, don't slack off, and join study groups. You'll do fine.

    Dorm Life

There are different types of dorms: all-girl, all-boy, co-ed, honors, mainly-athlete, and upperclassman. During freshman year you'll most likely be in a single-sexed dorm. It's good for making friends and you'll have plenty of oppourtunities to make friends of the opposite sex too. A thing to look foward to in the dorm is ResFest. Resfest is an event that has various dorm-against-dorm competitive activities. Being apart of ResFest brings tons of fun into freshman year.

    Food and Dining

When you stay in certain dorms you are required to have a meal plan. There are different types of meal plans and (I believe) they all come with dining dollars. Dining dollars are used to purchase things at on-campus stores. There are two cafes: in the Bethune Annex (all-girl dorm) and in the basement of the Blackburn Student Center. There is also the punchout which has a few restaurants where you can buy food with cash or dining dollars. The food in the cafes are ohkay. It's buffet style so there are many things to choose from. There's Soul Food Thursday where they serve stuff like yams and mac 'n' cheese and etc. There are cafe nights where an organization has a DJ play music and people dance. They're fun but it gets kind of loud.

    What to do for fun

Parties, of course. But for those of us that don't like to party much, there are many orgs on campus that you can join that have their own fun. Some orgs set up events for the public to attend so you could go to things such as game nights, movie nights, or cookouts. The dorms that have space for it hold Dorm Socials which are like dorm parties. On warmer days students can be found playing on the yard and there may even be the occasional water fight. In the winter if there's snow there will be snowball fights which are vicious and fun if you dare to join. HU is in the middle of the U.S. capital so there's always plenty to do off campus such as museums, movies, monuments (a lot of 'm's haha), and just exploring in the city.

Great for these types of students

HU is great for outgoing students or students that are active in the community. I think it's also a good school for students that like to do or try a lot of different things because there's an abundance of things to do.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs! They accept everyone and you're a member as long as you pay your dues. But you should also attend the meetings. Why pay for something then not do it? There are also some orgs that have membership requirements but it's easy to find out the requirements.

Howard University is a school filled with endless possibilities. While at Howard you are able to meet numerous people that will help you achieve your goals and more. Yes Howard is great for parties, but if you really want to network amongst the black community, Howard is the place for you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending or transferring to Howard, I would advise you to set goals! Many people, like myself, believed that Howard was all about partying and having fun. I never realized how many educated black people attended Howard and how hard they worked. Without set goals you will surely fail. I would also advise you to meet with an advisor at least once a week, they will help tremendously! Don't give up, the finish line is closer than it appears. I went from a 1.69 first semester of my freshmen year, to a 3.0. Anything is possible if you are willing to work hard.

    Academic Rigor

Some of Howard's courses are much harder than they appear. Some courses you can breeze by in, but others involve a lot of time. Some, if not all professors are really trained in their field and challenge you because they want to see you succeed.

    Dorm Life

Although I didn't personally live in a dorm, I often visited my friends and heard their trauma stories. Many students are struggling to find housing for next year because of the shortage of space. Many dorms had mildew, others rats. Serious work needs to be done to repair and add dorm spacing. However, the friendships and bonds made in dorm life are well worth it.

    Food and Dining

There are several restaurants that surround Howard's campus such as McDonalds, Subway, a carryout, etc. Also, Howard is only two stops away from Gallery Place/Chinatown, which offer more food variety such as Chipotle, Fuddruckers, etc. The cafe food isn't the best on Howard's campus but it will help if you are about to starve to death. Thank God for the Punchout though. Their food isn't amazing but it's definitely better than the cafe food!

    What to do for fun

Howard's list of clubs and organizations is enormous. There is so much you can do. The yard is the best place in my opinion. There is always something happening. Also Howard is right in the heart of DC. You can always hop on the train or bus and head over to the white house, the movies, go shopping, or even visit the zoo. There is always something to do at Howard and it is easy to become involved.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is something called the Howard Hand. There is no way to really describe it. But many people do it when someone gives a shout-out to Howard, the state they are from, an idea they agree with, etc.

Great for these types of students

Howard is great for anyone. But if you are a communications or law major Howard is definitely the place for you!

    Greek Life

I'm not a Greek, but I love seeing them on the yard. They walk around proudly displaying the fraternity or sorority that they are a part of. It amazes me to see them.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety....need I say more? The campus police aren't the most dependable people. So I would advise you to travel in groups especially at night. Also Howard's campus is pretty much open, so a lot of people who don't attend Howard are usually on the campus at all times. So be aware of your surroundings.

Howard University is a school where the African- American (& anyone else, we do have an other population) comes and learns about him/herself. Howard University is a school that produces active citizens in the community. Howard University is fulfilling legacy that has been created for us. :) I love my HU.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Tuition is increasing and financial aid is decreasing nationwide. Also, DO NOT be afraid to get involved. At the same time though DO NOT think that you can party every weekend and get a 4.0. You'll spend the rest of your career here making up for freshman year mistakes. Learn how to network, it gets you anything that you need here.

    Academic Rigor

The quality of what we learn cannot be be found anywhere else. Teachers work with you 90% of the time if they know your face, see that you are trying, and go to their office hours. Everybody is on their hustle getting internships and other types of experience and scholarships. The Howard University degree will take you far!!

    Dorm Life

This only got two stars because of the social aspect (and there is supposed to be more dorms built within the next 10 years). Our dorms need major reparations. In order to get the best experience I advise freshman girls to live in the Quad or the Annex, freshman boys should live in Drew Hall. DO NOT live in Meridian Hill Hall, it is a sophomore dorm and will deprive you from your freshman experience because it is a sophomore dorm and it is off campus. If you get placed there, have your parents call and complain. In around February, you'll have to pay $200 if you want to live on campus the following year. There is also a dorm that is way off campus (about 30 minutes total from campus) called University Town Center in Hyattsville, MD. It is metro- accessible and if you are used to a full kitchen and living room, this is the place for you (I recommend sophomores and up).

    Food and Dining

I only ate there first semester of my freshman year. The taste of the food isn't horrible, but you sure will miss a home- cooked meal. It got expensive and I lived off- campus (Meridian Hill Hall) so I hardly ate there anyway. If you live in the Annex (freshman girls dorm) a meal plan is required. Other than that I recommend getting food stamps as food gets really expensive.

    What to do for fun

Aint no party like a HU party cause a HU party DONT STOP! Also, exploring Washington D.C. can be risky, but fun. Make sure you travel with AT LEAST one other person your freshman year.

    Bang for the buck

Your experiences here will define your future. You are also paying for the name and renovations to the campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Freshman Week: a week that caters to getting the freshman acquainted with Howard life. You don't have to go to the required meetings after the first two. Also, do not forget the respect that your parent/ guardian hopefully taught you. :)
    The Yard: where everyone chills.
The Valley: in front of the Chemistry/ Biology buildings, behind Founders Library.

If you don't have a clue about fashion, I would recommend that you look at websites like Chictopia and Lookbook. After all, we are the second best- dressed university in America.

Great for these types of students

    Inquisitive, hard- working, outgoing, determined.

    Clubs and Activities

We have a club for everything. If not, it is not hard to start your own (that looks good on resumes).

    Greek Life

We are the Alpha chapter for most of the black greeks. There is First Fridays in The Punchout where we get to watch them stroll/ step. Also, in April there are the Probates.
We have other greeks as well that focus on your major/ minor. They are all great for networking.

    *Discretion is key*

    Campus Safety

And last but not least, a university that teaches in every aspect, whether in the classroom or on the yard, thus producing well rounded individuals.

    Tips for prospective students

My first tip for prospective students would be to do your research! Know everything about the school, campus life, financial aid, etc, so you won't become hit with anything too unexpected. You're first semester will lay the foundation for how you will carry out the remainder of your semester. So in simpler words, start with a high GPA so it will be easier to keep it high versus starting with a low GPA. Make sure you know how to prioritize, and manage your time. Howard can be an easy distraction, but just make sure you're able to control what's able to distract you. Besides getting great grades, my biggest tip would be to have fun! Howard is a great school where you may meet some of your best friends, so take every outing opportunity you can.

    Academic Rigor

Howard can be a very challenging university, but it can really matter on a few things, your courses, your professors, and your work ethic. Courses; every course is different. Freshman year your will be taking your base courses (math, English, language) so these courses can be fairly easy. By the end of sophomore year, and starting junior year you will be in your major classes, s they will start to be fairly difficult. Professors; every professor is different! You have some laid back professors, and some stern professors. I would recommend checking ratemyprofessors.com while making your schedule. Work Ethic; Everyone's work ethic is different! Your need to figure out your work ethic first semester. This means when you'll be able to party, study, and sleep. College is about prioritizing. So no matter how hard your professor may be, with enough studying you can pass the class.

    Dorm Life

I will speak about the freshman dorms, because I am a freshman. We have two female dorms, Annex and QUAD, and two male dorms, Carver and DREW. The Annex is a suite type building, where each suite has it's own bathroom. It's fairly modern, but the girls are stereotyped as un-social. And since there's a cafe in the Annex, the girls don't have to come out. The QUAD on the other hand (where I live) is very social ! the full name, The Harriet Tubman Quadrangle, consists of 5 halls (Wheatley, Frazier, Baldwin, Truth, and Crandall). Truth and crandall have triples, while the others have double and a few singles. Each hall has a lounge, and also community bathrooms on each floor, which aren't that bad! Overall the Quad is a great place to live. Carver is an off campus, but walk-able distance, and DREW is an on campus dorm. Both hold freshman males, but Carver is all Singles.

    Food and Dining

We have a cafe in Blackburn, a cafe in the Annex, and the Punchout in Blackburn. The cafe food isn't bad, but honestly you can get tired of it quick. The cafe in the annex is the same, but I prefer it over the cafe sometimes. The punchout is where we have like 'fast food' restaurants, here you can use your dining dollars or cash to pay. Other than in Howard, there are plenty of restaurants to dine at around the city.

    What to do for fun

Howard is METRO accessible (train and bus) so there are an ample amount of places to visit. I often go to Chinatown, to shop or have lunch. There is a huge mall, and many Smithsonian museums to visit for free.

Great for these types of students

Howard University is a great place for students who want to succeed in life. There are so many opportunities for students here to get a leg up towards there career. We have two career fairs, and companies are on campus on a weekly basis. Howard is great for the outgoing person, or the shy person trying to meet more people.

    Clubs and Activities

We have soooo many clubs and activities to join. I would first suggest joining your state club. Also please get involved in ResFest (a competition between dorms) it's the most fun thing you could ever experience.

    Campus Safety

Campus Police are always on campus, and there at the first call. We have blue buttons all over campus, so f you push it the campus police can come to that exact location.

Also, and the tuition is pretty high. Overall it can be a great experience if these facts are taken into consideration.

    Tips for prospective students

In the short months in D.C i've already been influenced by the historical capital. Teachers there are very intellectual and teach the class in the way that we are left never to forget what we've learned.
