Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My classes are all diverse, but you have to challenge yourself.
Am enjoying being here I made tons of friends within days of coming to Humboldt, everyone is very friendly! The small campus makes it easy to be involved, there are clubs and activities for everyone!
Bang for the buck Coming from Washington, I was a little nervous about going to school out-of-state. However the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) program makes school very affordable. Now I am able to go to a great school without hurting my wallet too much.
Tips for prospective students Don't expect a superficial crowd. Humboldt is very relaxed and down to earth. Sometimes the mellowness makes you forget that you're still going to school and you have to do homework sometimes! If you're a person who gets stressed out easily and needs lots of relaxation, this school is great!
Great for these types of students Down to earth, creative, friendly, open-minded individuals. You will not win the rat race by coming to Humboldt. If you care for culture, the environment, and about having a deeper meaning in life, Humboldt may be what you're looking for. Challenge yourself in the classes, very important to be self-motivated.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are really great at Humboldt. The classes are usually pretty small and the teachers are fun and will spend extra time with you during office hours if you need it. Every class I've taken so far has been good!
Am enjoying being here The campus is gorgeous and if you like nature and the outdoors, then it would be a good place for you. It also gives you a lot of hands on experience when you're in classes that deal with nature and the outdoors. The atmosphere at Humboldt is pretty laid back. The students and teachers are really friendly for the most part.
Bang for the buck There's quite a few classes to pick from and they're all small in size, which I think helps students learn a little bit better. It doesn't cost too much, although the fees just got increased and a few classes are getting cut or made bigger in size. Other than that, I would say it's a really great price for what you're getting from Humboldt!
Tips for prospective students Wear comfortable shoes! Depending on where your classes are, there can be a lot of hills and stairs to climb!
Great for these types of students People who like the outdoors and nature, people who are looking for a smaller to medium sized school with small classes and hands on experience, people who are on a budget.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'll make it simple it basically seems that I'm learning. I mean I do pay for my education so I make sure I learn. The school gives you the tools needed to learn whatever you wish, I know because I use all the resources available to me.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere here is amazing! There are things I do dislike but overall it's stuff that you'll find at most colleges, the substance use. The people here are pretty helpful and very kind which makes loving the school much more easier.
Bang for the buck Well it seems that even with the rise of cost to attend and dorm its worth it. I mean the professors and staff here make it worth your buck.
Tips for prospective students Don't think you're off the hook because you're finally on your own. We make sure the campus is clear of substance issues and clean. Be smart and learn because you are now paying for your education.
Great for these types of students The school is great for those who love the outdoors. We are near the beaches and basically surrounded by the woods. There is always something to do if you like being outdoors.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning a tremendous amount here at HSU - I've become a better student and a more educated scientist. The classes are challenging, some in ways I hadn't expected, but they have greatly expanded my critical thinking and observation skills. I am a kinesthetic learner, so HSU's focus on hands-on learning has been invaluable to me. The small class sizes (my smallest so far has been around 15 students) have made a huge difference in my education and have enabled me to interact with my professors beyond the classroom. Teachers from previous semesters still recognize me around campus and stop to see how I'm doing. Overall, I know my degree will be practical and will serve me well in the future. I cannot recommend HSU highly enough.
Am enjoying being here As an outdoor enthusiast, I am more than enjoying my time at HSU. 60 minutes or less to backpacking, 15 minutes to rock climbing, 10 minutes to the beach, and 0 minutes to the forest, it’s easy to see that I’m in an adventurer’s paradise. But aside from the outdoors, I could list a million and one other reasons why I love it here. The campus community is wonderful – very unique and welcoming to students from all walks of life. The surrounding community also has so much to offer – why not check out a new movie at The Minor (the country’s longest running theater) or play laser tag with some friends after some delicious fresh sushi! If you're coming from the big city, don't fret! We do have a mall and an airport, too! ;-)
Bang for the buck HSU is one of the most affordable universities nationwide for a number of reasons. Maybe it’s the small size – just around 7800 students – that allows them to keep the price low. Or maybe it’s the Western Undergraduate Exchange program that lets out of state students study for about the same price as California residents. But those are just the financial reasons. Humboldt has more than meets the eye; it's a secretly awesome university! Are you interested in the sciences? Try studying on our 90 foot research vessel, the Coral Sea, or stop by our marine laboratory. Do you love stars and nebulas? If you do, you’d be very pleased to work alongside professors in our observatory – and with a lot of hard work and a bit of luck, you may end up like two HSU students who recently discovered a new galaxy! But don’t let our science-nerd reputation fool you – HSU is well known for its Arts and Social Sciences as well. We have art galleries reserved just for student work throughout the university, a community counseling clinic for Psychology majors, and one of the largest art foundries on the West Coast! I could go on and on about HSU, but you get the picture. It’s a big box in a small package!
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus, it will make a world of difference! When you come, take a tour and ask questions about anything and everything HSU-related! Also, schedule your appointment in advance, and take advantage of your opportunities while you're there - sit in on a class, meet with a professor or the dean of your department! You will find that Humboldt's staff and faculty is very accessible, so don't be shy to ask them questions, too!
Great for these types of students All types - the beauty of HSU lies in it's diversity (and the surrounding redwoods, of course!) Outdoorsy, indoorsy, there is something for everyone. You must, however, have an open mind and tolerate about 40 inches of rain a year!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Like any university, Humboldt State will provide you plenty of new and diverse areas of learning. However, something special that HSU does is to create a great student and faculty connection. These classes wont have you stuck in a 200 person lecture hall (although Founder Hall 118 can feel that way some days), instead you will get to know your teachers. With this kind of approach to a smaller learning community you have the ability to get hands on learning that spans beyond the classroom.
Am enjoying being here I'm from the San Francisco Bay area so coming to a small town like Arcata was something to adjust to, but I adjusted very quickly. I'm not a hippy, I wear make up and don't like spiders but Humboldt county has a beauty that cannot be denied. The school is situated on the beautiful Redwood forest and further west into town you can feel the wind of the Pacific ocean. Besides the beauty there are plenty of things to do in school and in the community for many different types of people. The Student Recreation Center can provide you with all the outdoor activities anyone could ask for. Bulletin boards around campus are swarmed with adds for classes in African drumming, aerial silk, etc, not to mention all the live shows! And for those of us who like to party, as my father told me college is a party school. There's something for everyone!
Bang for the buck College is expensive and it's something every person has to deal with. Is Humboldt state worth it? Yes. Like I've said before, the classes are diverse and hands on and if you put fourth the effort you will excel. The community here is a buzzing college town filled with life. I couldn't have choose a better school if I had tried.
Tips for prospective students I'd say know why you're going here but that's a lie becasue I just stumbled upon HSU, it was my third choice school. My tip would be to open your mind to all that HSU offers, you could fall in love with rock climbing, fishing, dance, tai chi, or maybe the pizza at Arcata Pizza Deli (APD). Also, pack clothing for all types of weather becasue everyone receives an honorary BS in weather here. You'll wake up and it's raining but by noon it will we 56 and sunny.
Great for these types of students This school appeals most to the outdoorsy type of person becasue there is so much to do out in the beautiful wilderness but if you haven't been camping since you were 13 like me, don't let that stop you. And let's be honest, HSU obviously attracts students who enjoy dealing in the illegal usage of marijuana, and if you so choose to smoke weed this is a good match for you but do not by any means make that your only reason. I've seen many people drop out becasue they focused on drugs and not classes.
Bottom line: I believe anyone can fit in at HSU if they are accepting laid back peopleLogin to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot HSU is a great school. there's an amazing faculty, all of whom are extremely knowledgeable and willing to help make sure that you learn what you aim to learn.
Am enjoying being here The campus is amazing, though it has earned the nickname Hills and Stairs University for good reason. the campus, the CenterActivities, the consistent music playing and everything else makes for a wonderful experience.
Bang for the buck HSU is a CSU, so it's ~$3K a semester but it is well worth it and in then end, if things go as planned, you'll earn that money right back from getting to use the education that you got there.
Tips for prospective students Try to be fit and active, cause there's a lot of walking there and there is a great bounty of slopes, stairs and hills there. make sure you do all of the work assigned, especially if it's important. i know not all classes are great, but try to stick through it and make it to the end. it'll be worth it in the end.
Great for these types of students Artistic, individual, athletic, outdoors-y, musical, environmental, science-oriented, hippy, open minded, cool people. :) it's a very well rounded university and regardless of who you are, you will find your niche.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Humboldt State is an excellent university for the science majors. Their science programs are very impressive, even more so for the natural sciences. As a Botany major I am well challenged at the classes, some of which I would say are at the same level as some UC classes.
Am enjoying being here Humboldt is a community, and when you go to HSU you join that community. I enjoy the close feeling we have the with the locals, and the scenery here is amazing. The beach is 5 minutes away, the redwoods right behind campus, and hiking, biking, rock-climbing, and much more not far away. One downside is that Humboldt has virtually nothing shopping-wise. Mostly mom and pop stores, the biggest superstore being Target in Eureka. But I like it, it feels more relaxed and slow-paced than the city.
Bang for the buck Because HSU is a smaller university we get much smaller class sizes and are able to participate on a much more intimate level with the material and the professor. We can directly ask questions from our professors, and there are even times when we will run into our professors at the grocery store or at lunch and they will remember our names. I just find the education a lot more satisfying, because one learns alongside the masters instead of just from a book. It is not rare for a student to be asked to help with a faculty's research project, so the opportunity for hands-on work is greatly increased.
Tips for prospective students As everyone knows Humboldt is the weed capital, but truly HSU is not that bad. There aren't really any more pot-smokers there than anywhere else. Also, because Humboldt is so small it is pretty easy to survive without a car, especially since parking at HSU is absolutely horrendous. We get the entire bus system free so its easier to just ride the bus around. One thing that does suck about Humboldt is the weather. Its pretty cold and foggy most of the time.
Great for these types of students Definitely a great match the outdoors type of students. And its also a great stepping stone for undergrad science majors. People who like close-knit communities would fit in perfectly here. Definitely not a conservative school, a pretty liberal-thinking school focused on green-energy and working with the environment, which some students will probably find appealing.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm taking some amazing classes! The teachers are very approachable and fun, which makes learning so much easier, and you WANT to go to class. This past weekend, my Oceanography class went on a cruise in Humboldt Bay to experiment, and it was an eye-opening experience!
Am enjoying being here There is always something happening here, or something to do, which is surprising considering how small the town is. There are over 150 clubs on campus, including a circus!
Bang for the buck Humboldt is so much fun, and the prices are very reasonable.
Tips for prospective students -If you purchase a green meal plan, avoid going to the Giant's Cupboard on a regular basis.
-Be careful about those night walks to the forest
-HSU stands for Hills and Stairs University. While HSU is handicapped accessible, you still will find yourself climbing LOTS of stairs.Great for these types of students -Don't mind having class outside of the classroom

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My belief is that the capacity to learn is related to one's willingness to learn. I came to Humboldt State to learn as much as I can, while respecting and caring for myself in such a transitional phase in my life. Most HSU classes are small, and this gives me this feeling that my role as a zealous student is respected and encouraged. I am a Political Science double major with Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality studies, and I have a 3.889 cumulative GPA. I love to learn. And at HSU my major classes have been in intimate settings where I developed healthy relationships with my fellow students and teachers. Very cool.
Am enjoying being here Arcata is a one of a kind town, and the wind, cascading redwoods, and the sea, all have a very unique character to them. If you don't mind small towns, and a little bit of a lot of rain, then Arcata and HSU are worth checking out. Personally, I am an avid Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Star Wars fan, and the forest here out does every fantasy land I've ever digested in a book. It is a magical place, and honestly, I think only a select few can really thrive up here. Those that can: you will entwine yourself with red wood roots and grow tall.
Bang for the buck Yeah, it isn't really expensive compare to Ivy league or UC schools, and the undergraduate education is really good, IF you have the willingness to learn (key factor). I did run into a US Government class that I really thought was a waste of my time (the teacher didn't put in a whole lot of effort), but otherwise my classes have been superb. There are a lot of challenging classes offered here, where you really have to prove that you WANT to learn the material. I think regular brain gymnastics are fun, and healthy.
Tips for prospective students Visit HSU before you decide to come. It is the campus of Hills, Stairs, and Umbrellas. So me friendly with all three. Take Vitamin D pills because the sun peeks out only occasionally during the year (vitamin D is the vitamin we receive from the sun, helps with overall mood and other things). You've got to love the rain, and small towns. Do not come up solely here to smoke the weed, you'll fail out. And make regular meditational trips to the Forest, it is breathtaking. Oh, and get involved in campus activities. The fire shows, circus shows, and dance concerts are really spectacular.
Great for these types of students Artists (the art department is incredible, and Arcata can be an unlikely muse); Biological Sciences: the science classes up here are HARD, but amazing. Take Botany, you'll hold an undying love for plants afterward, and for your bed because of the sleep you may or may not sacrifice. Fisheries, Forestry, Environmental Majors are perfect for HSU as well. If you love planet earth, come see what it was like before capitalism destroyed most of the rest of the USA.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Humboldt offers a wide variety of classes and programs to choose from and the professors are all well-versed in their areas of expertise. The smaller class sizes also make it easier to have your questions clarified.
Am enjoying being here This is my first year and I am 8 hours away from my family, dealing with a roommate that I don't really fit with, and having moved down here not knowing a soul. The friends I have made are very nice and I'm not having a bad time, I am just ready to visit my family and best friends.
Bang for the buck Your getting a great setting and great classes at a pretty reasonable cost.
Tips for prospective students Know what you want when you come here. Because the campus is really like its own little town, it's easy to get drawn into what everyone else is doing. You need to have goals, as you should no matter where you go, or it will be easy to fall off of the path you need to be on. And join clubs! They help kill the time and you really feel like your part of something worthwhile.
Great for these types of students Students who want answers to their questions, not just lectures with 200 people sitting around them. People who like to be friendly and welcoming. They like at least seeing the natural world, and don't mind the rain. The land is truly magical here; don't ignore it.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences this school is a great place where you feel welcomed, accepted, and important. the professors care and want you to succeed in your classes and in life. overall, this school and town allow for the opportunity to grow as a student and as an adult, but it is up to us to take it.
Tips for prospective students this school is located in a small community, so if you are accustomed to big city lights and huge shopping malls and don't think you can go without it, i suggest visiting the school before canceling it out because it may just surprise you. it rains a lot, but that's what rain gear is for. if you love trees, the forest is our backyard!
Academic Rigor the professors want students to excel and because it is a smaller campus, they are able to provide help when needed. general ed classes can get big, but does not limit the teachers ability to teach effectively. major classes challenge you and as long as you stay on top of homework the information is stimulating.
Dorm Life most freshmen enjoy the dorms because they can connect with other first year students and begin making friends there. there are dorms specified for those that like outdoor activities, those that like the quiet, newer dorms that are set up like small apartments, then the traditional dorms where everyone knows everyone.
Food and Dining the main dining hall has a variety of food available daily, a salad bar and cereal bar that is always available. sandwiches made to your order during lunch along with hot food. also, there are a variety of vegan and vegetarian options that are made available for those that want it. other dining areas include more of a fast food type available and also a grocery store type.
What to do for fun the forest is our backyard here at humboldt, so there are plenty of beautiful walks and hikes in your future. the beaches are less than a 20 minute drive from campus or an hour bike ride if you wish. our gym along with other places in town has a climbing rock-wall that many students enjoy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus our mascot is the lumberjack, however we do not have a real lumberjack at games and what not. we do have the marching lumberjacks, a type of school marching band, who provide awesome school spirit as they march around and play fun and exciting songs.
Clubs and Activities there are tons of clubs available for anyone to join and if you don't feel like any of them are for you, you can start your own if you have enough people to join you!
Greek Life greek life is available with about 4-5 sororities and fraternities.
Campus Safety upd is great and always available for assistance when needed. there are strategically placed blue lights available around campus that provide direct contact with an officer who will know exactly where you are when the light is pushed to help from an emergency to providing you a ride to your car if you feel unsafe.

Am enjoying being here I enjoy being surrounded in a small active community. I feel that there is a lot of opportunities for college students to in get involve within the community.
Bang for the buck Living off-campus has saved me a lot of money.
Renting textbooks has helped a lot.
Loans are never fun when paying back, so, if you need it take the loan if not then return or save it for next semester because you'll know how much financial aid will be cut back.Tips for prospective students Remember to manage your time wisely.
Create study groups.
& check in with your professors about your performance in class.Great for these types of students If you want to experience something new, into the outdoors, GO GREEN (into recycling), and, oh.... love cold weather then this place is for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Like any school there is a hit or miss when it comes to teachers, but for the most part I will have 1 bad teacher for the semester but have 3 great ones. The teachers here really love the topic they are working with.
Am enjoying being here I love it here. Since the campus is smaller, you have an easier time asking the teachers for help or asking the kids in your class to start a study group, trust me I'm pretty shy when it comes to those things, but I still feel comfortable. The town that the school is in is cute and there are things to do, you just have to go on an adventure.
Bang for the buck Due to the budget crisis and all of that yucky economic crap, the school tuition has gone up. We even had a rally in protest to all of this, but the rent and food prices around here aren't that bad for a small town. You should do some research on the actual numbers.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to go outside, even though its cloudy doesn't mean you have to be a home body.
Great for these types of students If you grew up in Santa Cruz and just want to get out of the house for college, this is a perfect place. If you want a slower pace at life and want a more chill setting, this is your place. If you are outdoorsy, love hiking, rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, this is definitely your new home.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am going into my Junior year and I have almost completed my General Education classes. I am excited to get past this milestone, but at the same time I am really going to miss taking classes that are not applicable to my major, but where I learn so much about the real world and things that I can apply to my everyday life. I took the required communications class and I absolutely loved it even though I have never been a huge fan of public speaking, there was so much interesting history about the art of rhetoric and my classmates all had such intriguing speech topics that I learned a lot from as well. I took a couple history classes, one about the United States from 1877 to the present and one on Rock and Roll as an American Music and I did not think that I would love them as much as I did. I have always just gotten by history in school before, but in these classes I could not wait for the next class period so that I could soak up even more information than the class before. The teachers are so amazing at the way they present the information; it's not a boring lecture, its a fun, interactive way of learning and even if you try not to learn anything from them, they will surprise you and you'll walk away in shock from how much information you soaked up without even trying!
Am enjoying being here The campus is so pretty, even in the winter! It's so green and every time you walk around, you notice something new, whether its a tree you haven't seen before, or a beautiful flower that blossomed just the other day, there is always something new in nature to admire on campus. In the quad, there are always tables about some exciting club or ski trip to go on, there are the sororities and fraternities recruiting if you are into those things, and there are just genuinely nice people walking around. The Depot has the best breakfast burritos that I have ever had, and the J is a really fun place to eat all your meals at, because all the freshman are there and it is a good opportunity to meet new people and socialize with someone new every day! The dorms are another place that you can't avoid making new friends, you get to spend every day and night hanging out with your best friends! It is really hard to get lost on campus, and the buildings are within 10 minutes walking distance so you will also have a hard time being late to classes that are 10 minutes apart from each other. I love walking around campus and watching campus life happening, its really exciting to observe.
Bang for the buck Humboldt State is still on of the cheapest places to go to college. It is really a steal going there because I went to private school for high school and HSU is actually cheaper than my private school was and it is in no way inferior to my high school. In fact, the science labs have so many cool visuals and displays to use to help you understand a certain concept and the teachers are so amazing in helping you learn something new each class.
Tips for prospective students Come to Humboldt with an open mind, because if you come in with a predetermined opinion about the school, you will miss out on so much that it has to offer and that is truly unfortunate.
Great for these types of students Those who love the beach to surf, boogie board, body board, play in the sand, etc. The beach is only about 15 to 20 minutes away, its within walking distance, biking distance and of course driving distance. If you love to hike, there are many different places around the area and even on campus to hike, so grab a group of friends your first week there and go out on a hike! The football field just got re-turfed so football games are going to be a blast, basketball games are so much fun to go to and softball is exciting to watch, because their field is right next to the redwoods and its a beautiful backdrop to an exciting softball game. Humboldt is so versatile, it has something for everyone and I recommend that you seriously consider attending!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Humboldt has one of the largest biology programs in California. Most of the people I have talked to love the program and learn tons.
Will enjoy being here Apparently it rains alot which I am going to love because Ive been living in a desert for the last six years. The ocean is ridiculously close to campus, theres plenty of places for hiking, mountain biking, or anything else you could possibly want to do.
Bang for the buck Im an out of state student and I was entered into the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program which took care of most of my costs.
Tips for prospective students Apply early, and make sure you pay attention to the posted deadlines. If you miss even one deadline, your in big trouble.
Great for these types of students If you are really outdoorsy, like recycling , meeting new people, and are accepting of all types of people, this university is for you.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences it is an absolutely beautiful campus with all kinds of life in its students and faculty as well as in the forests and beaches around it. campus staff are friendly and helpful. it is my getaway college, and i love it here.
Tips for prospective students get your walking shoes on! the campus is made of hills and stairs - it is a good walk to any class. and be sure to take advantage of all that humboldt county has to offer - there is so much life and so many outdoor activities to partake in!
Academic Rigor schoolwork can be tough, but professors are always eager to help in any way possible - they want us to learn, rather than drown us in work!
Dorm Life dorm life is fun! there are different groups of people depending on where you live, so you can always find somewhere to fit in. things are made easier when living on campus - you meet great friends, too!
Food and Dining for cafeteria food, it's not terrible. there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options all over campus, and they are big on organic and gluten-free foods.
What to do for fun outdoor adventures! hiking, rock climbing, cycling, bonfires, surfing, kayaking, fishing, and backpacking are just some of the choices of things to do around humboldt - and the campus offers these as guided activities as well!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus humboldt state lies in the small town of arcata, which has so much character packed into it, i'm surprised it is still so small. there are farmers markets and small concerts in the center of town every weekend, and some holidays are a town-wide celebration!
Great for these types of students outdoor types, artistic/creative students (the outdoors/campus can be a great muse), and students into wildlife and animals.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Humboldt seems to be a reasonable school to go to. It offer Pre-Medical something that I want to major in. In addition they seem to have a lot of student support services.
Tips for prospective students This is a great school if you want to major in Pre-Med. They have reported a 100% acceptance rate of Pre-Med students going into med school.
Food and Dining The food they offer is great. It is very delicious.
Bang for the buck This college is very affordable and is willing to help their students throughout the long run with scholarships, loans and grants.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences HSU is a great school for artists, writers and anyone involved in oceanic or outdoor and forestry majors. The small classes and secluded location make focusing on school easy, while giving you a small community where making friends and feeling comfortable is natural. However, the feeling of attending a scholarly university is definitely not felt at Humboldt State, and I'd give the overall experience and academics a rating of 4 out of 10.
Tips for prospective students If you are already planning to attend, look for housing early or secure your spot in the dorms. Living off campus is great but the dorms are a great place to be close to class and to meet friends. The weather is very cool and coastal, and the surrounding acres of forest make you feel very secluded in this part of Northern California. Be ready for a lot of rainy days and lots of hills and stairs on campus.
Academic Rigor The teachers at Humboldt State are great and they know you by name. The classes sometimes don't feel as challenging as they should, but that is because they are taught correctly and efficiently by teachers who will call you out if you are not doing well and help you along the way.
Dorm Life I did not live in the dorms at Humboldt State but have lived within a mile from the campus. The city of Arcata is very small and half its population during a school year are HSU students. The whole town caters to the university's students, offering discounts at restaurants, clothing stores, grocery stores, and the public transportation is free for all students with an ID card. College life in Arcata is unlike any other college town, I'm sure!
Food and Dining The food on campus is mostly local and always fresh, with the exception of some of the sloppier items such a pizza and chinese food in the campus cafe. The school is known for being environmentally friendly, and being a plastic-water-bottle-free school is a reflection of the student's efforts to continue our pledge to the environment. A short distance from campus you can find a plethora of local, organic restaurants ranging from mexican taco trucks to fine dining to local ice cream shops.
What to do for fun Humboldt State is lucky enough to be in beautiful Northern California. Depending on the time of year, students can find plenty of things to keep them busy without traveling far or spending money. During the school year, students can scan any events list to find the following types of events, plus plenty more: hiking, bicycling, rock climbing, new release movies, comedy shows, Farmer's Markets, music festivals, theatre shows, as well as an always popping nightlife on the Arcata Plaza. The Arcata community puts on a number of events and community festivals throughout the year and no month is never a dull month!
Bang for the buck I can't really complain about tuition or book prices because they are not far off from other university prices, and it seems every campus across the nation is feeling the effects of raised costs. In terms of it being worth the money, I feel the small classroom setting SHOULD be what is offered for over $3,000 per semester tuition costs, and that is what you get at Humboldt State. You are not in the hustle and bustle of a big city university, and living in such a small community not only allows you to really let school information sink in with little distraction, but it's an area where students can really learn about themselves and the environment and grow as individuals - something that money can't buy!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus From the top of Founder's Hall - one of the main building on campus and the original whole campus - takes a lot of stairs to reach but offers a beautiful view of the Arcata Bay from the top. The Behavioral and Social Sciences building is a bit higher up from its fifth floor smoking lounge, and offers a little better view. It's amazing to walk out of a long class and be able to take in such a beautiful site right from your school campus. Not a lot of students have that opportunity.
Great for these types of students HSU is a great school for artists, writers and anyone involved in oceanic or outdoor and forestry majors. The small classes and secluded location make focusing on school easy, while giving you a small community where making friends and feeling comfortable is natural. Any student wanting to get away from the noise and bustle of a big city will find peace in Arcata.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs on campus that students can join, and the Center Activities program, run by the university, offers classes and activities for all types of outdoor activities during the semester for reasonable costs. Some clubs offer class units for a semester's time, or a student can choose to simply volunteer time just to be in the club.
Greek Life I was not involved in any Greek Life and cannot offer a proper review or opinion.
Campus Safety I have never felt unsafe walking around the campus at night. I used to do a radio show from midnight to 2 am and was in a building and had to walk home (off campus) alone. I never felt scared or nervous or had any intuition that anything bad would happen - even at such a late hour - and it never did. There are never fights or negativity on campus between students - not that I have seen, anyway. Sometimes when I come to school I forget to lock my car, but never worry about it (although I do not encourage not locking your car!). I have never had anything stolen or had any sort of problems on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences HSU has the most beautiful campus and promotes one of the healthiest student bodies in the country. The community strives to help students who attend the university and promote learning at all levels. Nestled in the heart of the Redwood Forest,, the college is truly a campus nestled in the heart of paradise.
Tips for prospective students Visit Arcata, California and the surrounding area before you enroll. Be prepared for classes which will challenge, motivate, and inspire you!
What to do for fun Humboldt State provides such diverse demographics that there is something for everyone to do to enjoy their free time.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Humboldt is totally underated! HSU has some truly outstanding programs, especially for those interested in environmental fields. The campus is absolutely beautiful and located in a beautiful part of California.
Tips for prospective students Don't discount HSU as a pot school. Come check out the campus and you'll have a hard time NOT attending.
Academic Rigor Many classes are very difficult while others are not so much. I've found my hard science classes to be extremely challenging and my social science classes pretty simply.
Dorm Life There are many good dorming options at HSU. The surrounding town is very student-friendly and many upperclassmen choose to move off eventually.
Food and Dining Very good food compared to other schools with many options. The Depot can be expensive, but local foods such as Los Bagels are represented.
What to do for fun Humboldt County offers endless outdoor adventure opportunities. Hit up the beach, the marsh, the forest, Fern Canyon, Redwood National Park, or Trinidad.
Bang for the buck While the cost of all CSUs is rising, it is still a good deal compared to other state schools.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A lot of people head to the forest for a jog, hike...or smoke.
Great for these types of students Environmental majors, science majors, outdoor enthusiasts, people who enjoy a studious but relaxed and open atmosphere.
Clubs and Activities Way more options than one might think. Everything from ethnic organizations to intramural sports to chess club.
Greek Life Pretty much nonexistent.
Campus Safety I've never heard or experienced anything dangerous. There is an on-campus police office.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hilly campus with lots of trees and lots of chill people. Many opportunities for creative expression. Friendly professors that will email you back or at least acknowledge you contacted them
Tips for prospective students Some questions to ask yourself before you hit Accept: Are you okay with the fact that many people here smoke pot? Are you okay with hilly campuses (Asthma anyone?) Are you okay with being a little bit isolated from any really big cities?
Academic Rigor Some classes are harder, some classes are easier. Overall, you'll definitely come away having learned something.
Dorm Life PARTY. If you aren't up for paying for things that other people break while high or intoxicated, live off campus. Also, people find it necessary to smoke inside which if you're a non-smoker like me, can be really annoying.
Food and Dining Lots of options, especially if you're vegetarian. Still, like any other dorm food, it can get boring after a while.
What to do for fun Hiking is popular. People go to concerts at local bars and the circus hosts lots of free performances.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I love this school and I am glad that I chose to attend this university. Everyone is always very friendly and it is a great environment. I would highly recommend it to science majors or people who love the outdoors
Tips for prospective students Know what your getting yourself into once you apply
Academic Rigor I don't have anything else to compare it to but it is quite challenging. It depends on the courses and teacher you choose to take, as well as the course load.
Dorm Life Very fun experience but after a year it does get old.
Food and Dining If you love fresh fruit and veggies there is a farmers market. The food on campus isn't the best but it isn't bad for the college life.
What to do for fun There isn't big city life here so don't plan on a great night club scene or bars at all. This place is chill and laid back, there are lots of parties and fun things to do like concerts and festivals.
Bang for the buck School overall shouldn't have to be paid for but I think since I have to pay it is a great school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The people and experiences overall are unusual. You have to see Humboldt to believe it for yourself.
Great for these types of students Great for people with an open mind and hippie style living. Also just for people who love the outdoors and open to meeting new people, everyone is so friendly
Clubs and Activities Get involved, it will be worth your while.
Greek Life Very small but rewarding if it is the right fit for you. Delta Phi Epsilon in the biggest and most popular sorority, Chi Phi in the most popular fraternity.
Campus Safety Very safe place to live, not much crime.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences A wonderful variety of courses in the natural sciences and environmental consideration. Humboldt State is a great university for people who want to learn about every aspect of an ecosystem. The location seems to draw compassionate, conscious teachers and students.
Tips for prospective students It is a small school and classes are scheduled in fairly specific time-blocks so it can be hard to get all the classes you want in one semester because they are all offered at the same time. Look at the schedule for previous semesters to plan for future schedules.
Academic Rigor My classes have been fairly easy on the grading and exam questions, but the material presented has still been high quality.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms but they look nice.
Food and Dining Eh, so so. There is a cafe in the library with a few snacks and random student club tables set up across the campus selling muffins and candy.
What to do for fun Attend lectures! So many interesting speakers come through and present at HSU!
Bang for the buck For in-state and western state students, tuition is very affordable and the class selection is great for natural resource/sciences students
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The community forest. A beautiful grove of redwoods managed by the school.
Great for these types of students Tree lovers!
Clubs and Activities I had high hopes for the circus club, but it was mostly just a bunch of juggling hippies when I went.
Campus Safety Hippies and biologists

Tips for prospective students I would advise future students to be prepared for a professional level of demand from your instructors.
Academic Rigor The facutly here really are passionate about presenting clear, in-depth lectures. There are many specialized courses offered which make Humboldt State a proud addition to the CSU system.
Dorm Life The Campus is Beautiful!! The students and faculty help create an atmosphere of welcome.
Food and Dining The fresh sandwiches and smoothies are the best in town.!!

Food and Dining Food is OK. I would have liked the school to have more options and variety of food. If you are vegan or vegetarian, this school's selection is a perfect fit. But if you are a meat eater, then its not so much.

Bang for the buck typical expenses that are expected when attending a cal state
Great for these types of students liberal, hippie idntified, low academic skils, looking for an easy transition between college and highschool

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Is an amazing university that the campus atmosphere is alive. It's location is amazing because it's not in a huge city but its not in a middle of nowhere town.
Tips for prospective students DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HOMEWORK FOR THE LAST MINUTE, have a tendency to do your work on time because it can affect your academics. Don't be afraid to approach your professor or to ask questions because they are willing to answer any of them, plus they love a good discussion and debate. Be yourself and seek out for help when needed because they're are hundreds of students feeling the same way you might be feeling.
Academic Rigor Most professors are amazing and are willing to help their students, when they seek it out. The professors know what they are teaching their students and very open to discussions. Most classes always have a TA in order for students to approach in to get help and there is always tutoring available, so most students receive aid.
Dorm Life It all depends on where a student lives and who they are living with but can always change if the student asks for a requests to change rooms. Most students are very friendly and supporting, most do become your friends. I currently live off campus but have spent weeks within the residence halls and have fun, I felt that I have received the 'Freshman Experience'.
Food and Dining There are many locations to where to dine but the most common one are the J and the Depot. The school is very diverse, so the food is diverse as well and students get an opportunity to try different cultures dishes. Since the school is a very Eco-friendly campus, it has food available for both vegans and vegetarians.
What to do for fun Humboldt might be located in a small town however, there is a lot activities to do. The Plaza is Arcata's downtown, that has multiple stores to look around and other towns are easy to commute back and forth. The campus has a variety of activities that are hosted such as concerts, presentations, fire shows, movie nights, open discussions, recitals, and plays along with hundred of things to do.
Bang for the buck Do not go on a shopping spree every weekend because things are a little more expensive in Arcata than it would be in a big city. For HSU students, transportation is free when a current student ID is shown.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Since it's a very diverse campus, there can be a lot traditions from different cultures being celebrated. One of the most recent one's I've attended was Holi Day where it's a tradition from Nepal, Pakistan, and India. Students got to throw dry colors and paint to one another. There are many other things that celebrated but will come alive if students get together and are willing to celebrate it.
Great for these types of students This school is great for people who love to be surrounded by nature or love nature overall. It's a great school for Sciences majors. Humboldt State care a lot about the nature that surrounds and have strong opinions about the issues that are going on in the campus. It's outdoor activities are a blast
Clubs and Activities Humboldt has over hundred clubs and more than 90 activities available for students. Clubs receive their new comers with warmth no matter or sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, etc. The activities being offered are what students look forward to since they get to meet new people.
Campus Safety The university has it's own police and is available 24/7. It has escorts that walk students to their dorms when feeling unsafe. They are very friendly and serious when it comes to their job

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Humboldt State is a beautiful place where one will love, grow and change. The people here are unusual, but kind and wonderful. The small town atmosphere creates a slower paced lifestyle that really brings people together.
Academic Rigor Humboldt State features an all-star cast of professors from around the world. They provide a meaningful learning experience, whether you pass or fail. Not all majors are created equally, but all will require a certain number of units for that degree. Humans are prone to make mistakes, and we all fail now and again. Here at Humboldt, expect to be lifted up by your peers and cheered on by your professors, no matter what your performance is like.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms is a great way to meet other people in your grade level. Many of the friends you make freshman year will become lifelong friends. It is a fun time to explore campus and participate in freshman events. It is an opportunity to meet the significant other you may spend your college life with. And if you decide you don't like it, you can always move off campus.
Food and Dining The college itself offers various food options on campus, from the cafeteria to the many stop & shop places. The true jewel is the dining in and around Arcata. You'll come to love the many breakfast restaurants and weekend brunches. The late-night snack spots are prudent also, especially during those all-night study sessions. Everyone that comes through here vastly enjoys the food.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences this school is wonderful, beautiful sights and very friendly people. they don't call it hills and stairs and umbrellas (hsu) for nothing. the classroom sizes aren't so big but it is a better environment for learning. the dorm life is wonderful with great staff and many people always there to hear you out about any situation.
Tips for prospective students bring rain boots and warm clothing, it does get pretty cold. also join a club, sorority, fraternity and try to get involved in as many activities as possible it will keep yo buys and force you to stay on track with your school work. this school is very laid back and different from the cities.
Academic Rigor the teachers here are amazing, and are willing to help you when you need it. we have a wonderful writing center that is willing to help, great tutors and so much more available for your academic needs. the teacher will for sure help you out if you are willing to be helped and show that you care.
Dorm Life the dorm life is nice, you will meet a lot of new people and hopefully love your roommates, you will have a ca that is available whenever you need them and very helpful. sometimes the dorm life can get a little crazy but when finals come around you will have twenty for hours of quiet time, so that you will be able to study.
Food and Dining the dinning experience is different, the jolly giant commons tries to appeal to everyone with vegetarian options, vegan options and so much more. we have a salad bar and we serve many international foods. there are several places to get food, we have market places, we have the j , the j grill, the cupboard and many other places, and a lot of local foods are sold here on campus as well.
What to do for fun there are beaches you can make it to such as clam beach, trinidad beach, and many more. lot of sororities and fraternities throw campus events, we have the humboldt state circus, football games are huge, so are basketball games. we have intermerial sports, pep rallies, talent shows performaces in the quad, and we have the forest on campus, you can go hiking there.
Bang for the buck in arcata, we have a lot of local foods, nothing is really expensive. this school really does have a lot to offer and a lot you could discover if you come here. i am still discovering what they have to offer and many new things i did not know about since i have been here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences great setting and college town, except there are no jobs off of campus. academic programs are interesting and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. housing situation is poor, not much campus housing and rent in arcata is ridiculously expensive for such a small town.
Tips for prospective students make sure you either have enough financial aid to live off of, or a job lined up. you are unlikely to find a job while attending school in humboldt. get a house with other students, single apartments are way overpriced. pick one of the more popular majors (environmental science, art, kinesthiology) to get the best access to resources, advisors and financial aid.
Academic Rigor humboldt state university is just like any other school in that it is what you make of it. some classes are very challenging, yet interesting, while others are obviously just credit grabs. ask around about professors before you choose courses.
Dorm Life alcohol is served on campus, which is nice. dorms are expensive, but convenient. there are dorms that are basically on top of your classes, and others that are more secluded.
Food and Dining good variety of food for such a small campus. there are several eateries across campus, as well as the depot which is hsu's equivalent to a cafeteria. the depot has good, local food, good, local beer, and good music and atmosphere to hang out or study.
What to do for fun there is always downtown arcata, known locally as 'barcata,' because it is mostly college oriented bars. there are also better venues for concerts. two great small, local movie theatres. but, the best thing in humboldt is the opportunities to explore the natural surroundings of the university. there are so many trails in the old growth redwood forests, plenty of exploring to do.
Bang for the buck not as expensive as most 4 year schools, but tuition is always rising.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus marching lumber jacks! an awesome funky marching band that plays anything from traditional band music to funky covers of madonna or bob marley.
Great for these types of students academic study types who aren't into sports or partying. athletes who like scholarships but don't mind being on a mediocre team. outdoor enthusiasts who love to hike, backpack, kayak, mountain climb, or just about any outdoor activity. hippies who want to live closer to nature. country type folk who want to work on a ranch and drive a big truck.
Clubs and Activities there are so many different opportunities to get involved on campus at hsu. there are tons of different clubs, and organizations such as yes (youth educational services). that help to organize community service and volunteering.
Campus Safety i have never felt unsafe walking around campus or arcata at night. there are plenty of lights and public safety people. there has been a mugging since i started here, but compared to the crime situation at university of oregon, humboldt state university is a utopia of safety.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences humboldt state university is a great school for hands on learning, affiliating yourself for others who share the passions as you, and most importantly moving forward in life. at this school, the professors are genuinely fair in what they expect from you, yet at the same time still challenge you to learn things for yourself. i'd recommend humboldt state to anyone looking for a good place to expand their minds, and set themselves up for success.
Tips for prospective students the best advice i can give to prospective students is to not get too involved in the party life and to study and work hard. you're paying a lot of money to get an education and that's not something you should take for granted. i'd also like to add that it's important to keep an open mind and to stay social, by joining clubs, and meeting new people. after all, being away from home can be exceptionally hard on some individuals and making new friends can help ease the stress.
Academic Rigor the curriculum here is hard yet fair. success is not spoon fed to you, it's something you have to choose for yourself.
Dorm Life the dorms are a great place to make new friends.
Food and Dining the food in the j and the depot are always well presented. sometimes on holidays such as thanksgiving, there are buffet's in the j in which they serve thanksgiving meals.
What to do for fun there are many things to do for fun, such as, hiking, going to the beach, joining clubs, walking to the plaza, hanging out with friends, going to the gym, or anything you find to be a good time. there are so many things to do in humboldt county.
Bang for the buck humboldt state university is one of the cheaper universities to attend. on top of that, it has a quality, hands on, learning environment, that is worth the experience. there are tons of opportunities here that there may not be else where, such as studying in a beautiful place; among the redwoods of humboldt county.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus protesting is usually held in the front quad by the bookstore, if and when it happens. an example of a protest held there is occupy humboldt.
Great for these types of students humboldt state is great for students who love to interact with others, travel, hike, experience new things in a positive way, and learn in a small numbered class room (which can't be said for every college).
Clubs and Activities there are many clubs here, such as, water polo, archery, martial arts club, photography, psychology, botany, dance, and many more.
Greek Life at humboldt state you have the power to create your own fraternity and become a founding mother or father. there are plenty to chose from already, such as, kappa sigma, which has recently been established.
Campus Safety there are campus safety points all around campus where you can stop and push a button for help. also, you can call the campus security at all times, if you're having a late night at the library, or just need someone to walk you home to protect you.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences humboldt has some of the best professors i have ever studied from. watch out for the financial aid office. double check all your paperwork, because they are ruthless.
Tips for prospective students join as many study groups as you can, because the classes are hard. you will love the classes anyway.
Dorm Life keep your time here short. find a room mate and rent a campus apartment or better yet off campus.
Food and Dining great on or off campus.
What to do for fun campus museum, headliners visit campus frequently, surfing, the river, snow (short ride inland).
Bang for the buck tuition is on the lower side for a university, but the cost of living is a bit on the higher side (rent, food, gas, fun stuff).
Campus Safety the university has its own police station. there are police assistance stations at the entrance to every building and parking lot on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i want to study marine/environmental science and in doing preliminary research humboldt seems like it would be perfect for me, but i am hearing from others that the vast percentage of students are pot smokers and that there is even a pot smoking day. i am laid back but i am not into that or other drugs and am afraid if i went there that i might not make many friends who don't smoke pot. is this really the reality at humboldt?
Academic Rigor it made me give a rating even though i haven't been to the school yet.
Dorm Life it made me give a rating even though i haven't been to the school yet.
Food and Dining it made me give a rating even though i haven't been to the school yet.
Clubs and Activities i see you have a snowboarding club, do you also have an alpine ski club?

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The forest is perfect to clear one's mind of the struggles of a college life. There's plenty of office hours to help students clarify anything they didn't understand in class. And, the student's energy towards their education is motivating.
Tips for prospective students Read Everything!
Go to class.
Ask questions.
Take advantage of the office hours.
Read it all again.Academic Rigor I'm only a freshman so so far, it's not so bad :)
Dorm Life I live off campus and it's great!
Food and Dining Epic and often organic. There's a large selection of organic and fresh foods so that the students can make choices to improve their health.
What to do for fun Wish you had a car/bike. Yes there is public transportation and BEAUTIFUL forest and beaches close by, but some of the best spots are a bit far from where I live.
Bang for the buck I'm paying $540/mo for a studio in Eureka with a cat but if you don't have a fury friend, you'll have a better chance of finding a cheaper place to live.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I really think the campus location makes the city look like child's toy blocks. The forest RIGHT behind campus is so green and beautiful that I can't help but walk through their almost daily.
Great for these types of students Environmental Studies/Sciences majors and for those who are looking to cleanse their lives of grey smog in exchange for fresh, damp and sustainable living.

Campus Safety I feel same at my campus and the lit up security polls helps me feel confident that there's someone ready to help.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Humboldt State University is a beautiful secluded school located in the forests of northern California. Everyone is nice to each other because it's such a small community. The teachers and faculty members are all great people.
Tips for prospective students Have fun, but most importantly study hard! You should be putting at least a couple hours into a subject a day. Don't be afraid to ask questions, because most likely another student has that same question.
Academic Rigor It all depends on what your doing. I recently switched from Biology to Business, but I still have study hard for certain classes.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun, being a transfer student I get to finally experience it. Living on campus was a good call and I have met a lot of great people in the process.
Food and Dining The food is alright, it has its days where the pork is terrible and the breakfast sausage could be improved. They do have great sandwiches and burritos.
What to do for fun There are lots of outdoor activities, because there are lots of hiking trails near campus. People enjoy rock climbing and bouldering. Our gym on campus has a rock climbing wall in it. There is a skatepark right next to campus that people like to shred. The beach is a ten minute drive so if you surf you can do that, or just have a nice bonfire with friends. There are also concerts on and off campus.
Bang for the buck I feel going to Humboldt State is saving me lots of money, and transferring out from a community college has also helped me out financially. What I like about Humboldt is that your still getting the same degree as a kid who is going to a school like USC you just aren't paying as much for your education.
Great for these types of students Outdoor people, hippies, surfers, skaters
Clubs and Activities I am a part of the lacrosse club and I've met a lot of great guys and have been improving my game. We don't care if you've been playing for 5 years or haven't played at all. Everyone is there to help each other out and hopefully get some wins in the process!
Greek Life I am pretty sure frats are a new part of the school and Greek life isn't that big of a deal, but we still have frats and sororities if you want to be part of that.
Campus Safety I haven't heard of anything too crazy happen, just a couple theft stories of people getting stuff stolen. Never has anyone gotten stabbed, shot, or jumped for being a person of a certain ethnicity, race, or gang involvement.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Humboldt is a really pretty school, and has a ton to offer. It's a very environmentally friendly school, which is what this world needs. Humboldt is also not a huge school, so you get to know a lot of people and the teachers on a first name basis.
Tips for prospective students If humboldt has your intended major, go there.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor is good.
Dorm Life If your an incoming freshmen, defiantly stay at the hill, either sunset or redwood. Its the funnest place to stay and you will meet a ton of new people within your first week there.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My undergraduate studies have supplied me with a well rounded education in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Although I am about to complete my B.A. degree in English, I have a basic understanding of botany, philosophy, sociology, American Sign Language, political science, and geology.
Am enjoying being here The local community of Arcata in Humboldt county has proven to be one that promotes individual and community growth. The university has been a very enthusiastic environment for its students to work in. I have enjoyed the student communities as well as the relationships I have built with my professors. I am extremely grateful for the relationships between the departments that help make every class reach beyond the individual disciplinary boundaries.
Bang for the buck The entire CSU system has become a victim to the California State budget crisis. Although our tuition has increased, along with all the other state universities, I feel Humboldt State has done its best to keep its educational value intact with an impressive series of research resources funded for the students as well as continuing to host educational lectures and panels from all over the globe.
Tips for prospective students This school offers a smaller community where you will be sure to gain strong relationships with your professor. This school is known for its impressive science facilities and majors. The school also has an impressive music department. I have been given great opportunities by the English department faculty to improve my education and prepare myself for graduate school. If you do not mind rainy weather, enjoy smaller classes, and would love to carry your studies beyond the university and into the extreme wilderness we have as our backyard, then this is the school for you.
Great for these types of students Students who enjoy being in active communities, those who are looking for field work and excellent laboratory work in botany, wildlife, engineering, and environment studies, and students who work better in smaller classes.
