Michigan State is a world-renown university. It has some of the most prestigious programs, colleges and professors in the world. For example, The Eli Broad College of Business is consistently ranked in the top 100 business schools in the nation. In addition to that, the Supply-Chain Management degree is ranked as the BEST program, of it's kind, in the country!! Harvard ranks second!

Although Michigan State is constantly compared to its old-time rival University of Michigan, MSU holds the same academic profile! There is no difference amongst the two universities except that our basketball team is absolutely amazing!

    Am enjoying being here

Going to a large university like MSU allows for students to truly find their niche. There are clubs and organization for just about everything. There are so many different kinds of people (not just from Michigan, but from around the world) who come to school here! Our green blood runs thicker than you can ever imagine!

To make the Spartan-lifestyle more fulfilling is the famous and notorious IZZONE (the student section for our incredible basketball team). Our students dress up in any green costumes they have, and unashamedly cheer for our boys while bowing for our legendary coach, Tom Izzo.

    Tips for prospective students

To be completely honest, Michigan State University was always my last resort in terms of choosing a university. I had never planned on going there. I was nervous about attending such a large school, and didn't think that The Big 10 Life was for me. But after my freshmen year, I cannot imagine being anywhere else and cannot wait to return in the fall!.

Great for these types of students

Students who are serious about academics, but still want to enjoy college.

Like any school, you'll only learn as much as you want to. As a large and reputable Big Ten university, of course you'll learn a lot at MSU. As a Journalism major, however, I would like to note that I am learning a TON in my journalism courses. Since the newspaper industry is dying, many people are hesitant to jump into a journalism-related career. You would think that a bunch of old professors would be clinging to the dying newspaper industry like the Titanic going down. I was a bit worried about this entering MSU, but have been completely and absolutely delighted that this is NOT the case - even the older professors know reality when they see it, and the School of Journalism at MSU is definitely riding the wave of change, and is on the cutting edge of the journalism industry. They're not educating their JRN students for a dying industry - they're teaching us to be open, to adapt, to innovate, to go out and make our own names rather than waiting for opportunities to land in our laps. Most importantly, they are teaching us that, to be successful, we need to have comprehensive knowledge of a variety of media - print, radio, television, web, etc. - and to have the multimedia skills (filming, video editing, website building) that will put us above the crowd. The major has a broad focus, and is applicable in a variety of areas, including communication, public relations, advertising, filmmaking, political science, etc. Because the industry is undergoing such rapid change because of the economy and the advent of the Internet, the opportunities to be found in journalism are actually endless. The School of Journalism is truly preparing its students to not only work in the future of journalism, but to be the ones that actually shape this rapidly-changing industry. This progressive approach taken by the faculty in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences (in which the Journalism program is located) is truly commendable.

I am in love with the campus. Though the oft-repeated phrase on campus tours “you can make a big campus small, but you can’t make a small college big” was a typical ploy by a large (47,000 undergraduate and graduate students) campus to rake in prospective students nervous about getting lost in the crowd – I have found it to be incredibly true. I absolutely love it at MSU. MSU is its own little city in itself. The people are INCREDIBLY friendly – they hold doors open for you, give you directions if you’re lost, and help you if you drop a stack of books. Grand River, the “main drag” of East Lansing, runs along the north side of campus. On Grand River there are any store you’d ever need to go to – food places like 7-Eleven, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Bubble Island, Insomnia Cookies, Noodles and Co.; La Bodega, a fair-trade store; Barnes and Noble; 3 different textbook stores; and much more. And though the campus is big (a 30-minute walk from opposite-corner-to-corner), it’s rare that you’ll be forced to take a class on the other side of campus. There are plenty of sidewalks for you to walk/bike/skateboard/rollerblade on, and once you get used to it, a 10-minute bike to class is no problem at all. Besides, it makes it so much easier to stay healthy! There are so many fascinating places on campus – the Botanical Gardens and the Children’s Gardens, the Dairy Store, the Sparty Statue, the Rock, the Museum, the Wharton Center where they have plays and host famous bands/musicians, etc. There are also hundreds of events and student organizations that you can get involved with. These are the things that only a large campus like MSU can provide, and it’s easy to find your niche.

    Bang for the buck

MSU isn’t cheap. That’s the downside. I graduated salutatorian (2nd) out of a class of 511, and didn’t get a single merit scholarship. If you’re going for a purely-merit-based scholarship, you have to participate (as an incoming freshman) in the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition, in which a few hundred of the brightest prospective students take a test to compete for 15 full-ride scholarships. You can only really get scholarships based on need, or if you apply for a specialized scholarships (for example, the School of Journalism has a dozen or so scholarships that you can apply for, and there are scholarships offered by many/all of the other schools/majors too. There are also scholarships offered by the resource centers, like the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, the Lesbian Bisexual Gay Transgender Resource Center, etc.) If you’re lucky enough to get one of these scholarships, or some outside/private scholarship, they’re incredibly helpful. If not, you’re paying for MSU out of your own pocket, or with loans, as most college students inevitably do. Is it worth it? It depends on what you get out of MSU. If you don’t push yourself or take advantage of MSU’s absolutely astounding array of opportunities (leadership, involvement, internship, community service, study abroad, campus media/publications, etc.), it might not be worth it. But if those opportunities are exactly what you’re looking for, and exactly what you pursue – MSU is definitely worth it. These, along with MSU’s reputation as one of the top universities in the country, definitely put MSU a head above the competition, despite its higher cost. But if you take advantage of MSU’s opportunities and use them to set yourself up with an excellent job after you graduate – then, in a few years when you finish paying back your loans, MSU will be most definitely worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Live on campus at least your first year (it’s a requirement, unless you live within 50 miles of MSU; however, even these students should live on campus, not commute). Since MSU is so large, this is the best way to “connect” with the campus. If you don’t, it may be difficult to “find your place.”
    - Bring a bike.
    - Visit campus before you choose to come here. Visit it several times. Talk to friends who go here, ask them questions, and ask them to show you around.
    - Try not to live in Brody Complex. It’s where most of the freshmen end up, and it is so far removed from campus. In the winter, you’ll probably end up taking the bus rather than walking because it will be so cold. Be mindful that the other complexes, like South Complex (with Holden, etc.) and Hubbard/East Complex, may also be a bit removed from the other complexes, your classes, or all the “action” (shopping, eating, and, yes, partying) on Grand River (though Brody is the most removed). I would recommend living in the West Circle Complex or Red Cedar Complex (with Snyder-Phillips, Mason-Abbot, and, across the river and in the most centralized location on campus, Shaw). (I am personally partial to the Red Cedar Complex; I live in Abbot.) These are along Grand River, are close to many of your classes, and Snyder-Phillips currently houses the best cafeteria on campus, and many students from the other complexes will walk all the way across campus just to eat there.
    - Buy your books online. The 4 textbook stores (3 are privately owned, and the 4th is MSU’s Spartan Bookstore) vary only slightly (a few cents) in prices. There is no competition, and their prices are all very high. Last semester, I spent $225 on books for my 5 classes (4 classes’ worth of books were bought online; for the 5th class, I had no choice but to buy the book new at one of the bookstores for $101). Had I bought 100% of my books from the bookstores, I would have spent $375. So I saved $150.
    - Don’t worry about community bathrooms, they’re no big deal. Some of the halls have community bathrooms, others are suites where two rooms share a bathroom. The community bathrooms in the Red Cedar Complex are all very nice.
    - When you get on campus, before classes start, go exploring with a friend. Or meet an older student and have them show you around and take you to the cool places on campus.
    - When you first get on campus, wander around. Visit where your classes will be, and take “the long way back” to learn your way around campus. MSU isn’t honestly that big, and it doesn’t take long to get to know most of it.
    - Keep a campus map (I laminated mine) on you at all times when you go out. I keep one in my purse. It’s very helpful, and I use it all the time. It’s helpful when trying to describe to someone where something is, and even the older students get confused sometimes when you’re having a conversation about some building.

Great for these types of students

Anyone. Especially students who want to get involved, who aren’t afraid to take a little bit of initiative and look for opportunities or try new things. Great for curious students who like to wander, explore, and discover. It’s also perfectly fine for more shy students – you can find your comfortable niche and stick to it. Or, if it suits your fancy, go out and explore. Only a large campus like MSU allows you such options. MSU’s zoology/veterinary/science programs are highly reputable, and if you’re interested in the environment or alternative energies, MSU just might be the place to go (MSU is really pushing their “Be Spartan Green” initiative. MSU is the country’s first land-grand institution, and plus our school colors are green and white, so they’re really looking to be the innovators in alternative energies.) MSU’s business program claims to be the first or second university in the country that employers go to when looking for potential workers. MSU’s teaching program is also highly reputable. While Eastern Michigan University is known as the “place to go” for a teaching degree, MSU counters that EMU simply churns out many teachers – but MSU turns out QUALITY teachers. Overall, MSU is one of the best places to go to for ANY major.

As one of the eleven Big Ten schools, Michigan State's prestige includes it's wonderful learning opportunities. We have amazing professors that push academic limits beyond the class room. Although Michigan State is one of the largest universities, there are various residential colleges (James Madison and Lyman Briggs to name a couple) that allow smaller classrooms and provide students with a greater opportunity to establish relationships with professors. Here, at Michigan State, you can get the best of both worlds. Like every college, there are difficult classes with difficult professors. But, there are many resources to avoid such cases; like professor ratings on allMSU.com or tutoring options.

    Am enjoying being here

Growing up in a small town, never would I imagine that I would love being part of Michigan State University. With a campus so large, it never gets boring. There are various stores and outings along the campus borders and thousands of student organizations fit for anyone. The students at MSU are very diversified and much friendlier than I've experienced at any other school.

    Bang for the buck

As a public college, the cost of tuition is much less than smaller private schools. In addition, a larger, more notable college, like MSU, can offer students greater opportunities than a smaller private school. Famous for their Study Abroad program, Michigan State students have traveled to places all over the world, such as India, Singapore, Jamaica, France, Italy, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and the list goes on ... One thing's for sure at Michigan State, you get what you pay for!

    Tips for prospective students

What any student should know entering college is that things are totally different. You are no longer in the same playing field as high school. College is whole new game. You need to establish independence because at college you are completely on your own. Time management is also very critical in college with so many opportunities and things to do. And if you've always been a good student during high school and felt like you never needed to study, trust me, you WILL need to study! Many of the professors require you to learn and grasp knowledge beyond the material they teach in lectures or labs.

Michigan State is a great university to attend! The professors really care about you and how well you're doing. Don't be afraid to go visit them during their open hours; they love to talk and get to know their students! The professors don't drone on and on about the subject they're teaching, but they use many tactics to get the students to understand. Some use humor, some use hands-on activities, some use fun discussions! My chemistry professor loves to make us laugh and do fun experiments such as making things blow up! (; Whichever way your professor presents the information, you're sure to learn a lot, while having fun too! Not only have I learned a lot academically, but I've learned a lot culturally. I was really scared to start college, because I thought I wasn't ready to be on my own. But there are many people here to help you through the way--while experiencing different cultures too! Each floor has a mentor and a cultural aide to help different cultures interact. The people here are uuuuuber friendly, and there's a large array of activities and clubs to join! I joined MRULE, or Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience. We have soo much fun discussing issues in our society, and we volunteer to help others, and we participate in different bonding activities, such as going to the cider mill or dodgeball tournaments! The club is filled with many people of many cultures and identities, and it gives me a chance to learn more about people that I never thought I'd learn! I wouldn't give up this opportunity for the world.

    Am enjoying being here

Ha. Am I enjoying being at MSU? You bet. There's always something fun to do, whether big or small. There's so many different and fun people here, you'll definitely make good friends. With those friends, you can do literally anything. Parade around Grand River. Make random trips to the mall. Hit up a party. State is AHH-MAZING during Halloween weekend! People are dressed in outrageous costumes all over the place, and it creates lots of memories for you and your amigos to ponder on weeks later. :p Football and basketball games are fun too! You can camp out with your friends for good seats, deck out in MSU wear, chant school songs, or strip down to nothing but pants (only if you’re a guy though!) and paint yourself the school colors! Whatever you can do, go ahead and rep your school! We have different traditions here too, such as the Homecoming Parade (which I was in for MSU Dance Club, another fun club to join. It's like having sisters away from home!), where all clubs come together to present a spectacular parade for the Lansing public. We have the Midnight Scream during finals week, where everyone screams out their window about how finals are a pain lol :p Soon we'll be having Humans vs. Zombies, a GINORMOUS tag game between MSU students, and we'll be using socks and Nerf guns (; There's always something fun to do on campus, you betcha.

    Bang for the buck

I have to admit, Michigan State isn’t the cheapest place. Buuuuut, it provides many services that can help you get financial help and aid. There are many merit based and need based scholarships given, and many loan services that can help you pay for tuition and such. Also, MSU has a variety of jobs available all around campus, so you can get that pocket MONAAAYYY. A lot of students that have/had money issues are given lots of opportunities to do what they always wanted to do. Hey, that’s why so many students were able to do Study Abroad, right?

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Get to know all your professors. Cuz then they get to know you, then you get on their good side, and then you get those good grades. Ayyyyeee!
    2. Try not to live in Brody. They usually stick a lot of freshmen in there, and that complex is kinda far away from the rest of MSU. Stay in Hubbard, it’s close to some important areas, and it’s pretty, and new (that’s where I stayed freshman year!).
    3. Go out with a group of friends at night. Nothing wrong with being smart, am I right?
    4. Be happy! Other freshmen are shy too, and when they see happy people, their OWN happy comes out. :p
    5. Bring a bike or buy a bus pass. At the beginning of the year some of my friends said, “nahh, I’ll just walk. My classes are nearby.” Know what they ended up doing? Buying a bus pass. Sometimes the distances will be too far for your legs to handle. Or you just won’t feel like walking. Either way.
    6. Join a club. You meet great friends through those. Looks good on applications too.
    7. Have funnnn! But not too much fun! Hit them books. (;

Great for these types of students

MSU is fun for students who are serious about their studies, but also want to have fun. You can learn a great deal here, but it does require working your best and studying. Then when it’s time to chill, there’s lots to do too! If you balance your academics and your social life well, you’ll have a great college life. I promise. :D

Being a student at Michigan State allows one to receive a well rounded education while still focusing on specific areas of study and allowing students to still have a bit of fun while doing it. All undergraduate students are required to take introductory courses in things such as: the arts and humanities, social sciences, science classes (for those who aren't science majors), and very interesting literature classes.

    Am enjoying being here

State is a perfect example of a Big-Ten school right in the middle of in a college town. Many students have season tickets to both football and basketball games, which I personally suggest getting, because game time allows fellow Spartans to come together. There is also lots to do in downtown East Lansing-including shops, places to eat, a theater, and mall. The Greek system isn't super huge, but I've seen and met a fair share of those who have decided to go Greek. I've also met a lot of really great people!!

    Bang for the buck

I seems like there's a daily hike in tuition, but it's worth every penny overall.

    Tips for prospective students

    Study, Study, Study!!!!

Great for these types of students

People who like to have fun, but also know when it's time to be serious!

    Am learning a lot

The classes here are extremely informative. The information provided can sometimes be overwhelming, but I enjoy it because it gives me a chance to branch out into subjects I would never have considered. The course list is extremely expansive, allowing you to delve into nearly any topic you can think of.
As with any other university there are good and bad professors. So far I have been lucky and have had mostly good professors that enjoy teaching, which in turn makes it easier to pay attention and learn.

    Am enjoying being here

For myself I could not have made a better choice for schooling. The students here are fantastic. I was extremely fortunate to be on the floor that I was assigned to because I made some of the best friends I could have asked for.
There are an unlimited amount of ways to occupy yourself when you aren't studying or in class. If you are the athletic type there are intramural leagues for just about any sport ranging from easy going to extremely competitive brackets. The are also a lot of trails to run and ride. The workout facilities are also top-notch. If you want to join a student club there are hundreds. You can even make your own with as little as seven members. Some examples are Latino Club, Fencing, the Cookie Eating Club (of which I happen to be an avid member), Tri-athalon, etc. There is something for everyone.
The university puts on a lot of events for the students such as: game nights where you can go compete for prizes, open mic-nights for those who are musically or poetically talented and want to get some recognition, free concerts, movie pre-screenings, etc. The list goes on, and they always provide a multitude of free items.
The campus is beautiful. You really get to enjoy it because of how large the campus is and how spread out the buildings are. From the Red Cedar running through the middle of campus to the vast array of trees and plants, the view of campus is fantastic.
The actual city of East Lansing is not very large, but it has everything you need. The food is fantastic (as is the food in the cafeteria surprisingly enough). There are a lot of small shops, as well as some bigger ones, on a or two long stretch across the north end of campus. Downtown East Lansing has the feeling of a really large outdoor strip mall. It is a really cool place to walk down on a nice day.
If you are into the Greek life it is fairly popular at MSU.
Of course if you are into sports, being a Big 10 school, MSU has a fantastic athletics. Some of the more notable experiences include going to the football games with 20,000 other students yelling at the top of your lungs because MSU just pulled off an extremely risky trick move for the win. Or finally getting your Izzone tickets for basketball after camping out for 24 hours (and attending a year's worth of games in the upper bowl). And those are just the big sports. Besides hockey all other MSU varsity events are free admission, so you can cheer on your fellow students.
The best part though is the fact that there are some 40,000+ students that come from all walks of life. You can learn so much from these people that will just absolutely blow you away. It is those people that really make me enjoy the time I spend at school more than anything else.

    Bang for the buck

Being an out of state student makes it somewhat difficult to afford Michigan State. I cannot speak for the in-state students, but the tuition can be quite pricey. However, I have learned a lesson from someone very close to me. She told me that no matter the cost, your education is worth it. I completely agree with her now that I am experiencing it.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about applying to MSU, do it. If you find yourself being drawn to a different school though, go there. Make the choice that will best suit you. It is important that you enjoy where you are in college.
    -MSU Specific Tips:
As I said the campus is huge, bring a bike or get a bus pass (though that can get crowded).
It gets cold, be ready for the weather.
Books are EXPENSIVE. Talk to older students in your major to see if you can't cut a deal. Also half.com has some seriously cheap books. Also, find out from other students if you will even use your book in class (some professors will say they are required and will not even crack them open for the whole semester).
Get a campus map! They are extremely helpful, I use mine every semester to find the fastest ways to class.
Don't worry about looking like a freshman. So many freshman I met this year were so worried about looking like they knew what they were doing because they didn't want anyone to know they were a freshman. When I was a freshman I did not care if anybody knew. Nobody treats you any differently (this isn't high school). Other students were extremely helpful when I asked them questions.
Explore the campus. There are so many shortcuts and paths and buildings... it is easy to get lost. Map out your routes and walk them. I found a short cut that saves me 7 minutes walking time everyday like that.
Live on campus. The staff is wonderful. The experience is unbeatable. I lived on for the last two years.
Get to know your RM. They are one of the best resources you will have. They can be a great person for advice, just to go talk to, or someone who can help point you in the right direction.
Learn about the different dorms before you select which one you want to live in. Most freshman get put in the Brody Complex. Everybody complains because it is so far away, but a lot of people like it because everybody there is in the same boat. Nobody knows what is going on so they form a strong friendship while trying to figure it out together. I lived in the Mason side of Mason-Abbot for two years and absolutely loved it. It has a very homey feel to it. I got to know almost every single person in my entire building, as they all felt like one person. If you never want to be alone, you don't have to be. But again, it is up to each person what they are looking for.
Become friends with your roommate. I was fortunate enough to have the best roommate I could have asked for. We lived together for the past two years, and he is one of the guys that I will be sharing an apartment with next year. I could not have gotten a better roommate, and that was completely by chance. Find out people that you are compatible with, so that if you don't get as lucky as I did, you will avoid having a bad roommate two years in a row.
Get involved. It is so important to find an activity that you enjoy and pursue it. Find other people with similar interests (guaranteed there are some at MSU) and join up with them.
There are a million things that I could keep going on about, but I feel as though a big part of the college experience is learning some of these things on your own, though a little bit of help is always appreciated.

    -Tips for applying to college:
Keep the grades up, and get involved. I know you probably hear it quite a bit, but it is actually important. Universities are huge into students that have taken an extra step by doing a sport, or joining a club, or volunteering.
-Some tips for going to any college:
Do not be overwhelmed, instead branch out. Do things that you would not normally be comfortable doing. If something approaches you, give it a shot. Don't pass up any opportunities that you think you might regret.
Be outgoing and extroverted. Meet a ton of people. You will encounter people who have been and done and plan on doing things that will absolutely awe you. Learning about people from other walks of life has been one of my favorite experiences at school.
Learn about yourself, not just what you want to do with your life, but learn who you are and who you want to be. Start taking the steps to mold yourself into that person.
Finally, have fun. This has been the best experience of my life and wouldn't trade it for anything. I take my studies very seriously, but I have had more fun then I ever imagined.

Great for these types of students

MSU to me seems to be a great fit for anybody, because college is what you make of it.

    Some things to remember:
In my opinion the most successful people will be those that have a well rounded experience. Yes college is when you learn about the field that you are going to be working it for the rest of your life. Yes, academics are the number one reason you are at school. However, it is important that you learn more than just the name of every bone in your body, or in my case the tensile strength of tempered steel at any given pressure or temperature. You must learn about yourself. Take in every experience you can. People that can adapt well, and who learn to work well in any situation will excel not only at college, but in life.

There are a lot of students here. I think keeping to yourself will only hurt your experience in the long run.
The campus is massive. You will have to get around, and sometimes it is not easy.
Time management is huge. You will have to learn how to balance school and fun. It is so easy to get caught up in your studies, but you need to relax and have fun. If that means breaking up your heavy schedule with a class like bowling or weight lifting, or running, do it. Maybe it better suits you to join a club, whatever it is, get involved.

currently i am enrolled for 14 credits. Monday and Wednesday and Friday i have college algebra from 10:20-11:10 and then on Monday and Wednesday i have Cse101(computer class) from 12:40 to 2:30. my math class is only challenging because i cant understand my teacher, thankfully the book text is really helpful and the online homework, extra practice and so on, really helps me understand the material i don't get in class, and there are reviews for every test. Cse101 is challenging, but I'm glad that it's giving me a broad understanding of Word, Excel, Access, And web design. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays i have Com225 (intro to interpersonal communication) i really like this class, i have it from 10:20 to 11:40 and its taught by 2 professors that are married, steve and kelly. they are so engaging and are really cool and interesting people. then from 12:40 to 2:30 i have ISS210 (society and the individual) i really like the professor in this class too, he's very versed on the information he teaches, but you really have to pay attention to catch everything he says. its not like in highschool where you can just do the work and in the process you'll get the material, you have to be the one to motivate yourself to go to class and listen and thats how you'll understand the material. then i have Yoga from 4:10 to 5:00. 14 credits isn't too overwhelming i would say, its keeps me busy for the first half of the day, then i really have the rest of the day to do all my work and other extra-curricular activities.

    Am enjoying being here

If you want to fell like you are a part of something bigger than yourself, come to Michigan State. Even though it is a big campus, you find your friends and groups that you will hang out with and everything just seems to fall into place. It wasn't that big of a transition for me because i went to a highschool campus that had 6,000 kids, so i was used to being in a place where i didn't know everybody.

    Bang for the buck

Since i live in Holden Hall, they are doing this thing called FYE ( first year experience) and the goal is for it to help freshman ease into the life of college. This program is really cool and holds a lot of activities that give you information about sex to what major to choose, anything really. Everywhere there's free activities that you can attend.

Don't let the size of Michigan State put you off its not really as big as it seems other than the fact that you have a large area where you could possibly need to go for your classes, but you can ride the bus, walk and bike ride, hey walking is a great way to keep in shape. Don't come with the mentality of High School, its much better than high school. if you come thinking that your going to get personal attention without even asking which sometimes happens in high school, your are not going to get it. teachers are there to teach you, but they're not going to hold your hand.

Great for these types of students

anybody really, michigan state has such a diverse set of students that i think really anybody who has an open mind will be able to thrive here.

    Will learn a lot

By now, you probably know of the excellent academic reputation Michigan State University has. I don't need to expound upon that.

    Will enjoy being here

You'll love it here, almost everyone does. There's so much to do and see! Lansing is the perfect college town and you will most definitely find more people who enjoy the same things as you do. :)

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive, but that's what you get for attending a well-known university. Although the meal plans don't leave me feeling nickle-and-dimed like other universities sometimes do.

Some of the buildings could do with a little renovation (and air conditioning!).

    Tips for prospective students

Some of the lecture halls may seem really intimidating at first, but always try to sit in the first two rows. Your classroom is only as large as you let it be. Out of sight, out of mind, you'll forget about everyone behind you. Plus, your professors will know you by name and sometimes give you tips about homework and tests! ;)

Great for these types of students

MSU is a great place for kids who are self-motivated and don't feel lost in crowds.

The Briggs program is a great program. It really challenges those interested in science, but the profs are always available to help. Some classes are easier than others, but you still learn a lot even if the class is not all that interesting.

    Am enjoying being here

I will admit it was tough at first. I came here knowing no one else on campus. Once I made some friends things got a lot easier. I am a good distance from home, but I can still go home and see family and friends. The campus is beautiful, especially in the fall. Sometimes stress gets to be a lot, but thats college. Overall, I am glad I came here to State for college.

    Bang for the buck

Out of state tuition is ridiculous. I live less than a mile out of Michigan and they would not give me in state tuition. They did help me with some scholarships, but I will still be in debt for a while after school.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to focus and study if you want to do well. College anywhere is a big adjustment. You are in a whole new setting with a lot of new people. Find groups that fit into your interests, you get to know a lot of people that way. Get to know at least one person in every class so you can get notes if you have to miss class and then you have a study buddy for the upcoming exams. Stay on top of things so you don't fall behind and you will do fine.

Great for these types of students

Wants lots of opportunities, but can still have a chance at some small classes. Focused but may want a break at times. City-dwellers most definitely.

Michigan State University teaches you so many things. I am an Elementary Education major and I find those classes to be my favorite. In one of my TE classes I am learning about race, diversity, and human difference. This class is for future teachers to help within the classroom, but it is also teaching me more about myself and about the world. That is how most classes are here which is cool. You take a certain class for your general ed classes and your major, but many of the things you learn apply to other classes and help you have a better look at the world.

    Am enjoying being here

Let me sum up my time here: BEST CHOICE I HAVE EVER MADE :) There is always so many things going on around campus. Of course, there is a lot of homework, but that is what college is for. But going to class is so pretty because MSU's campus is absolutely gorgeous. Anyone teetering between schools, visit MSU and your mind will be made. It is so much fun and everyone is so friendly. Getting away from academics, there is of course the sports games. The football game experience is so huge here. Also, there is any club that you could ever think of. So if you wanted to get involved, there is something here for you! I am having the best time here.

    Bang for the buck

Of course a big university like MSU is a little expensive. But the good part is that they offer so many scholarships and loans that you are pretty much guranteed to get one. Also with the things you learn and all the extra free things for students here, the price is definitely worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out MSU's campus before you come here. Everyone says this campus is huge, which it is, but when you get to know where things are, it seems so much smaller than the first time you visited. Apply for scholarships EARLY. The earlier you apply, the better. Also, in between classes, try to get involved in at least one club, sport, or activity. It is a way to get to know people quicker and have fun doing what you like to do :)

Great for these types of students

Anyone and everyone. MSU is incredibly diverse and welcoming to absolutely everyone! So make the right choice and become a Spartan for Life!

Many prestigious classes are offered here at Michigan State University, and I am among a very unique program on campus. I am currently attending RCAH at MSU. RCAH is the Residential College for Arts and Humanities. The RCAH has taught me many things about literature, history, ethics, the visual and performing arts, and the study of languages and cultures. We have even had the opportunity to meet with world leading writers as well as a group of visitors from Mali.

    Am enjoying being here

Being in the RCAH at MSU, I live in the Snyder/Phillips complex at the heart of the university. Our dorms are in the same building as our classes, as well as the finest cafe on campus, The Gallery. The campus is beautiful all year and the special programs, concerts, clubs and recreational activities offered are endless. Being in the RCAH offers the intimacy of a small liberal arts college, but the oppertunities to be a part of a large university and all of the activities.

    Bang for the buck

Even though MSU is not as inexpensive as a community college, being in the RCAH allows me to start on my major from day one. The Residential College for Arts and Humanities is a major itself which is why I am able to take classes that pertain immediately to my major in my Freshmen year.

    Tips for prospective students

For me, knowing that the RCAH allowed me to start immediately on my major really was the key to attending the residential college at MSU. I also love the idea of a smaller residential college within the big university. All of my classes through RCAH have 20 people or less, which made this a much easier transition for me from a small town high school. Another perk about RCAH at MSU is that you are on a first name basis with all of the professors, and that they are extremely flexible with office hours and simply helping you out.

Great for these types of students

RCAH at MSU is great for a wide variety of students. Because the RCAH major is so general, many students double major in things such as foreign policy or like me, Journalism. As I said before, it is a small arts school with all of the opportunities of a big university and an easy transition from high school into college.

Michigan State University is the perfect university for me. The university allows me to advance both socially and academically. There are some academic hoops I have to jump through before I can focus completely on music education but that is part of how MSU keeps its reputation for well rounded graduates. I participate in IM sports and take advantage of the many study and workout facilities MSU's campus has to offer.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus environment and all of the great people I'm meeting here. The only thing I've really had trouble with on campus is the lack of free parking. If you park in a reserved spot, even for 5 minutes, you will get a ticket. To be honest, the dorm food is not the greatest but it's very convenient to be able to eat at any dorm on campus any time I'm hungry. Some of my classes were pretty far away but biking or taking the bus cut down my travel time a lot.

    Bang for the buck

MSU is really expensive and they keep upping the tuition fees every semester. When I started, credits were $315. They are now $347 and I'm only a sophomore.

    Tips for prospective students

Figure out where you can park for free without getting ticketed. Make time to study at some place other than your dorm, it will make you focus on studying. Party responsibly. Meet as many people as you can and learn as much from them and your professors as you can. Attend some sessions of classes you're not enrolled in but that interest you.

Great for these types of students

    Self disciplined, hard working, social.

The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State is ranked first or second (only to Cornell!) depending on who is doing the rating. Our professors are the ones who write the books, and they know what they're talking about. We always have guest speakers coming in to talk about the topics we're learning and most of them are Spartans themselves. Plus, our alumni network is huge, so finding a Spartan in the workplace and having it land you a job isn't unheard of!

    Am enjoying being here

It's true that Michigan State has a big a party scene, but we're a big school. There's never a lack of something to do, and if you aren't into going out then nothing says you have to, there are about 40,000 people that go to MSU so you'll find someone who likes to the same thing as you. In addition to partying, MSU has an extensive Greek program, club life, and intramural sports program.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. Go visit the campus. Look into the degrees we offer, because although we have a lot, and are rated high in most, we don't have everything. Campus is huge, so be prepared to walk or buy a bus pass. You will meet new people every single day and you have to put yourself out there to make friends.

Great for these types of students

If you like having fun and you're able to balance social life and school well, you can succeed here. If you want a big school with a ton of people this is the place to go.

Most of the courses I have taken so far have been very insightful.! My beginning courses were a breeze and at least for the first two weeks just refreshers of things I learned in high school.! I have enjoyed some of my professors as well. Its always great to be in a class where I professor loves their job and the subject they're teaching.!

I LOVE MSU more than I thought I would. The atmosphere of this campus and the ease of learning where everything is very beneficial to incoming freshman.! They have so many programs to get involved with that will help your transition from high school to college smooth.!

    Bang for the buck

Yes MSU is quite expensive but what University is CHEAP.? Although the cost attendance is steep the education you receive from going here and the pride and prestige you get for being a SPARTAN is worth it.! Besides you have sites such as CAPPEX to help you get scholarships.!!!!!

If you take the time to check out professor ratings you can pretty much guarantee to get a good professor. They all seem to know their stuff, it is just a matter of getting a professor who can explain things well. All the TAs I've had are really helpful when it comes to helping you learn the material too. MSU does a good job at making sure you learn lots about your major while still making sure you learn about things outside it. While a lot of people might complain about having to take Social Science classes, Arts and Humanities classes, Writing Classes, and Science classes they really shouldn't. MSU is just doing a good job to make sure their students get a universal education.

    Am enjoying being here

I am not a sports fan, I don't have season passes to anything but that's okay. I still love it here. People are friendly and the atmosphere is great. Grand River is great and the mall is only a short bus ride away (at least compared to my hour+ car ride from home). Campus is beautiful in the spring and fall. There are lots of places to just sit outside and study if you want.

The only down sides are the caf's food isn't that great (though there are plenty of places to go to eat) and parking is horrible.

    Bang for the buck

Defiantly expensive to go here but the professors are good so it is wroth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a bike. Campus is huge.
    Study.
    Go to class.
You are given a map at orientation. Don't lose this.

General information about me: I'm currently majoring in Media Arts and Technology which is part of the Communications Department at MSU. I am also in the Academic Scholars program which is the back door entrance into the Honors College so to speak.

As an honors student in high school I'm finding my current classes at MSU to rather easy. Admittedly my curriculum isn't the same as a physics or math major so it isn't fair to expect the same level of challenge from the classes, but at the same time I was always told college would be different. But easy classes aren't a sign that the University is bad but that I get bored easily. Even my honors Microeconomics class is reasonable.

All of my professors are intelligent and knowledgeable on their respective subjects. Despite the large class sizes in the general education classes I feel like my professors at least care about the students. Any issues I've had have been taken care of quickly and with minimal effort.

I expect that once I push through all the general education requirements I will find more challenging and personally interesting classes.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus at MSU is beautiful. There are many trees and parks so it is hard to believe that you are in the middle of a very urban area. MSU is also very large so I'd recommend purchasing or bringing a bike to campus if you don't enjoy walking. There is a decent bus system but I have yet to use it since the weather has been holding out this year. We'll see how feasible biking is when the snow hits.

The dorm that I live in is part of the South Complex. It is a suite style dorm and is acceptable as far as size goes. There is enough room for my roommate and myself and all our stuff. Though the dorm can be noisy on weekends, it remains quiet enough to get a restful sleep every night and to do homework in.

Cafeteria food is acceptable. Working in the cafeteria is also a way to make some spending money but it isn't very emotionally rewarding.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is kind of expensive but there are worse schools. I assume everyone else is experiencing tuition hikes as well. All in all, I can't really complain about the costs.

It would be really nice if MSU offered more scholarships but so far I haven't found anything that really applies to me (a caucasian with an average/middle class family). It was a nice gesture from MSU to replace the first $500 payment in the now ended Michigan Promise Scholarship Program.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to class at least 15 minutes early and sit up front.
    Do your homework on time.
    Make sure to sleep.
Try to get to know your professors.
Leave your door open so you can get to know the people on your floor.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great if you are self sufficient. It is a large school which means that there are plenty of people but you can get lost in the crowd if you don't look out for yourself. The programs are great and you will have a blast if you can make friends easily since there is always something to do on campus every week.

Michigan State University is a very challenging university. However, it is a college that is dedicated to seeing you succeed. In other words, you cannot really fly under the radar and expect to pass your classes without putting the effort into it. MSU is a university that takes a lot of work, but in the end, it is so worth it. I have learned more here in one year than i did in my entire high school career.

    Am enjoying being here

MSU has a wonderful campus. It is located in the heart of East Lansing, so there never needs to be a dull moment. You can always find something to do in East Lansing. The students are usually all very friendly which makes for a wonderful atmosphere. I absolutely love Michigan State, and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

    Bang for the buck

One downfall to Michigan State is the price. It is a very expensive school. A lot of the learning is done outside of class considering there are so many students in one classroom with one professor. It is a great atmosphere, but it is a bit pricey for the amount of people put into one classroom.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip is take is serious from the beginning. Most people move in their freshman year and start slacking off. Well, you can't really do that at State because of the difficulty level of classes and class sizes. Buckle down from the beginning, so you don't have to try to play catch up later on down the road.

Great for these types of students

Michigan State is a great school all types of majors and people. In my opinion, it is a great school for medical students. The science classes here are very challenging, however, that is what medical students need. They need to be challenged and they need to make sure that they are willing to put in the amount of work necessary to succeed.

I'm only a freshman in my first semester but the opportunities here seem almost endless. Through some of the great clubs on campus I've already started picking up on programming skills I won't learn until a little later. Also, MSU has me taking classes for my major out of the box which is great because a lot of other places I looked at wanted me to wait two years to do the things I'm doing here in only a semester, and all the professors seem to want to help you which helps if I don't get something right away

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being in East Lansing. The campus is so beautiful, the people are nice, the professors are cool, the temperature is not too bad just yet, and nothing beats football Saturdays with the rest of the Spartans. I could easily see spending four years living it up in this place.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of state student I have to pay a pretty hefty sum of money though a little cheaper than some private universities its still quite a bit of money, but at the same time I feel with all the opportunities I get to explore new possibilities, its completely worth the money you pay to be here.

    Tips for prospective students

the usual sort of generic stuff; be ready to work, don't slack off too much, go to class (likely the most important), manage your time wisely and all that jazz. Also remember, if you're going to MSU you are now officially a Spartan and should support the school (mainly in sports) so don't go around rooting for our rivals, not cool dude.

Great for these types of students

If you're an Engineer and a freshman try the Residential Experience out, because you get to be around a bunch of guys who want to do what your doing or something very close plus you'll have easy traffic to your classes for the most part. Also if you're interested in Game Design at all, go check out SpartaSoft, its a fun group that lets you learn how to make games with none of the stress of a classroom.

MSU is a diverse school in terms of experience and student body. I mean that I met people from all kinds of backgrounds and what I got out of my education was directly proportional to what I put into it; the opportunities offered by MSU were endless, but you definitely had to take the initiative.

    Tips for prospective students

Take initiative. MSU offers more opportunities than you can imagine, but no one holds your hand. Find them, ask questions, and get into them yourself. It's the best way to stand out.

    Academic Rigor

Most professors grade tough, especially when it comes to those first 200 level classes in each major. The point is to figure out who can survive and who can't, so be prepared to study and work your butt off. It doesn't get easier in the upper levels, it just gets more interesting because you can tailor your coursework to your interests. That, however, makes all the difference. There were very few classes that I felt I had to take just to get the requirement over with.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are generally loud, but people tend to be friendly and the RAs are usually supportive and willing help you out. Some of the rules (drinking, allowing guests, etc.) are pretty strict, and the consequences can be severe if you're caught, so be aware.

    Food and Dining

Variety, easy to find something healthy, accommodates various diet preferences, and the best dorm food I've had (and I've visited a lot of colleges).

    What to do for fun

Just walk along Grand River on any given day and you'll find something to do. Also, the Resident Life Association was great about organizing fun activities. Check out the weekly plans posted around campus, in the cafeteria, or in the State News.

Michigan State University is truly a great place to attend school. You don't typically find schools that invest as much time and money into their undergraduate students like MSU does, and it really has an impact on the students. As a person who takes his education very seriously, I love how the school develops its students to make a significant impact in the world.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest taking advantage of the MANY resources available on campus. MSU's primary goal is for its students to succeed not only in school, but in life as well...so they create many outstanding opportunities to help the students achieve their goals. It is very important that you take the time to use everything they have to offer you.

    Academic Rigor

I have taken several difficult classes my first year at MSU, but have also taken some easier ones. There are classes that focus on just about every subject imaginable, so you may come across a few that don't require as much studying; however, you will certainly be challenged almost all the time due to the university's nationally recognized faculty and academic programs.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms is one of those great experiences that most people look forward to when they begin college. Because MSU has the largest residence hall system in the country, there is a dorm that fits just about everyone's personality and needs.

    Food and Dining

Dining is one of those things that makes MSU extra special. Each neighborhood on campus has dining venues that offer numerous types of cuisines for even the pickiest eaters. With the university's constant expansion projects, the dining halls are getting better each year. Brody, Case, Snyder-Phillips, and Owens are just a few great halls that serve a variety of food throughout the day.

    What to do for fun

There are no limitations to what you can do in East Lansing. The atmosphere on campus is extremely positive which makes the campus events much more fun to attend. No matter what day or time it is, there is ALWAYS a university sponsored event taking place somewhere on campus. Most of the action takes place off-campus either in downtown East Lansing or around Grand River. There is something to do for everyone!

Michigan State University is a phenomenal school that gives quality education to its students. From becoming an accounting major to a zoology major, the opportunities are endless and the sky is the limit to do well academically and succeed in the future. The professors and teaching assistants are extremely caring for their students and are willing to talk to them during office hours or extra time regarding any questions or concerns.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for prospective students include simply showing up to class and expanding on the professor's lectures while thoroughly understanding the material being presented and the topics being covered.

In addition, each student should read the chapter material/topic being presented by the professor at least two days in advance. This would allow them to understand more effectively once the lecture begins.

Students should always go to their professor's or teaching assistant's office hours to address any questions or concerns regarding the class itself. This would be a great time to talk about your grade, how to improve your performance if not doing well in the first place, and even getting to know the professor or teaching assistant up to a more professional and personal level.

    Academic Rigor

It definitely isn't the easiest school in the United States, but it definitely isn't the most difficult school also. At this school, if you simply go to class, listen carefully during lectures, review your notes and read through the textbook, and talk to professors/teaching assistants regarding what to do to succeed in the course, then any student can do extremely well overall and maintain a strong GPA throughout their academic career.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is phenomenal. You will definitely get to meet lots of people coming from diverse backgrounds with different interests. You will get the opportunity to bond with one another and even become friends for life.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining at MSU has a lot of variety from meat to vegetarian foods. In addition, they also have healthy choices such as salads, fruits, and milk for students more cautious about their health while away from home.

    What to do for fun

You can party, go out to eat, and just have a great time with your best buds. You only live one, so make the most of it.

    Bang for the buck

It definitely is worth it for the college experience. Anybody can be successful here as long as they have the motivation and urge to learn and succeed in their personal and professional lives.

Great for these types of students

People who have done exceptionally well academically while in high school
People who are friendly and very social
People looking for an adventure and the time of their lives!

    Clubs and Activities

There are a variety of clubs and activities to choose from. You can pick from activities relating to your major, interests, and even sexual orientation. At this university, there are all the resources that everybody needs to feel accepted for who they are and where they come from.

    Campus Safety

The campus overall is pretty safe during the day times. During nighttime, danger can hit especially around 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Like any other colleges, drinking and drugs are involved so its always wise to make the best decisions.

I love michigan state university. It allows people to step outside of the box and become productive individuals of society. There you can become a great leader, someone that operates a productive business and excels in a profitable company.

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip that I could a future spartan would be to go beyond your comfort zone. Explore the person you want to be and the contributions you would like to make society. Then go find a group of club that will help you reach your goal.

    What to do for fun

Depending on the person. there are plenty of things to do for fun. You can go hang out in someone dorm, go to a party, walk on Grand Ave., the main active street on the border of campus. You can always find something fun to do.

MSU is very skilled at helping students decide what they want to major or minor in. MSU cares if its students succeed or not, and they want to prepare its students for the real world after college. I couldn't see myself anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Time management is the key to succeed. And surrounding yourself with people who have similar interests and goals as you. Having a social life is not as important as succeeding academically, but try to make time for friends and fun activities to take a break from studying.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of things to do for fun. There are always parties going on, and there are free movies held on campus. There are also a lot of places for dining that are very affordable.

MSU is a big school and a lot comes with that. The campus is huge, but gorgeous, sports games are a lot of fun to watch with such a passionate and supportive big school, and the people are characteristically nice, with a lot of diversity everywhere you look. The best decision of my life was choosing to go to Michigan State.

    Tips for prospective students

You will be walking a lot if you don't get a bus pass or a bike. I had neither this year, and really enjoyed the walks across campus not only with the scenery, but it was good exercise, too! And really get into the clubs and extracurriculars! It's a great way to meet people with similar interests, and it is a good thing to talk about at job interviews.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the major. As a freshman in engineering, it is quite a work load if you take a lot of credits. I also know my friends that want to do well in the James Madison College have a huge work load in writing. However, as an engineer, you get some experience in class to put on your resume, and get opportunities to network with companies in your field of interest.

    Dorm Life

Many worry about this being a party school. I will say there are parties if you want them, but it is a very easy scene to avoid. It is also not uncommon for people to just go to parties and dance, without the influence of any outside substances, and with no one pressuring you or judging you.

    Food and Dining

With the dining plan, you have a bunch of places on campus to choose from, offering just about anything you could ask for. I get sushi a lot (it's not the greatest, but it's still good), sandwiches, Mexican food, and salads. Even when I went on a vegan diet, the cafs were very accommodating. The food just outside of campus is also close to walk and yummy. I tried Thai food for the first time this year, and now my friends and I go out to dinner every Friday right off of Grand River.

    What to do for fun

There are TONS of clubs to join (one of the benefits of it being a big school). Literally just about anything there could be a club for, there is. Or if there isn't you can make a group on Facebook and I'm sure there will be some people interested. Otherwise, just going out to dinner at the cafs with my friends, going for walks on the beautiful campus, having movie nights, or playing some pickup soccer games are a few things I enjoy doing in my spare time.

    Bang for the buck

MSU is expensive. That is my biggest issue with the school. They charge you for a lot of things that you don't think about a lot going in. Unlike a lot of colleges, MSU home games are not free for sports. If you want to go to a gym, that costs money. Bus passes cost money (though it is fairly reasonably priced). And be VERY careful about reading signs with parking and paying the meters because you WILL get ticketed. A lot.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One of my favorite places. that I stumbled upon while jogging, is the botanical gardens. I also love the Engineering Building, the study-friendly libraries, and Spartan Stadium =)

Great for these types of students

Coming from experience, the engineering program really gets you out there and lets you know what to expect. If you're a hard worker, MSU has a lot of opportunities in general, but honestly, MSU is accepting of just about every type of student.

    Clubs and Activities

With it being a big school, you're bound to find a club you like. Plus, there are a lot of clubs that are perfect for networking or building a resume for a job in your degree field. And, if you're looking for a club but MSU doesn't have one, I know a few people that have just made groups on Facebook and found people interested in the same things that way. Two that come to mind now are a Motorcycle Club and MSU Blues Dancing.

    Greek Life

I am not extremely familiar with Greek Life here, but I do hang out a lot with the engineering fraternity, Triangle, and I know the guys there just love it. They truly have strong bonds of brotherhood that extend to life outside of school.

    Campus Safety

There have been cases of assault on campus, but the MSU Police are very persistent about cracking down on safety. Neither my friends nor I have ever had anything happen. A lot of the prevention is just common sense things, like don't walk alone at night. Otherwise, just be aware and careful.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great for any type of student, as long as they are willing to put in the work that is required to be a college student. With it being the largest campus in the states, it is really easy to find a place where you mesh well.

    Clubs and Activities

The first week on campus there is a rally where all of the clubs and groups come out to get new members. It takes up multiple football fields and there are hundreds of different opportunities for you.

    Greek Life

MSU is a great school if you like a lot of people, something to do all the time, and a bug campus. It's a little hard at first to get adjusted to such a large area. Going to class can be tough because of all the extracurricular going on.

    Tips for prospective students

know yourself. if you think a large class size is something you can handle than msu is the school for you. there are limited majors with class sizes smaller than 200-300 students and that can make learning difficult sometimes. in the first 2 years take your university required classes first. that way you have time to decide on your major.

    Academic Rigor

the school is tough. almost every class takes attendance which can weigh heavily on your grade. get to know your TA's because they will help you understand. visit allmsu.com for more information on your professors, classes, and even if you are looking for a place to live.

    Dorm Life

living in the dorms is great for when you need to get to class quickly but other than that there isn't a lot going on. some dorms are even co ed so you won't meet a lot of the opposite sex.

Michigan State University captures diversity from every angle. There is something here for everyone and the campus is beautiful. Michigan State has something for everyone from clubs to sports and activities.

    Tips for prospective students

Everyone considering going to Michigan State should at least take a tour of the campus. Talking to advisers is very helpful, even if you're not sure what you want to major in yet.

    Academic Rigor

The courses here are pretty academically challenging, but there are many helpful resources available, like the Math Learning Center, tutors, and even just making your own study groups.

    Dorm Life

Many dorms are being renovated and they are great! The only bad things are how far some of them are from other parts of campus, and some have community style bathrooms.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls at Michigan State are great. They have so many options and some are being updated to house even more of a variety of foods. With the purchase of a meal plan, you simply have to swipe your ID to get into any cafeteria on campus.

    What to do for fun

There are hundreds of clubs at MSU and all different kinds of sports. There are three gyms to workout or shoot hoops at, many IM sports teams, and activities going on all the time. There is also a movie theater and shopping mall very close to campus.

    Bang for the buck

Of course going to a university is expensive, but getting an education is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, no matter the cost.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great for students who take academics seriously, but also like to let loose once in a while. MSU has something for everyone.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs on campus and even if there isn't one that you are looking for you can always start your own club. There are also organizations that put on hundreds of activities all around campus throughout the year.

    Greek Life

There are 13 sororities and 24 fraternities at Michigan State. Greek life is a lot of fun! They put on philanthropy events all the time to raise money for charities.

    Campus Safety

MSU has a very safe campus. It is well lit and well patrolled by the Michigan State Police.

MSU is a great university for every kind of major and every type of person. I meet a new person everyday and I have had many great experiences with people from all walks of life. I love it here and I am glad that I chose MSU over any other college.

    Tips for prospective students

Pick a college based on what you want to do in life, not for sports. Make sure to keep up in your classes and go to office hours if you feel you are lost or need a bit of extra help. MSU has a great science college called Lyman Briggs and I recommend it for anyone considering anything in the science field. MSU also has an awesome Political Science college called James Madison and my friends have learned and gained a great deal from it. We have awesome cafeterias, clubs, organizations, athletics, gyms and music organizations. We have majors anywhere from dairy farm management to piano performance to packaging to microbiology and genetics. This is a great place to be.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are challenging. Some classes are like learning a new language but there are always people there to help you study or to help give you tips on how to learn the material. Most professors want to see you learn and aren't out there to trick you. Some classes grade on a curve and some classes consider only above a 92% a 4.0. It depends what major you have and who use choose as a professor. Overall, the classes are hard, but they're certainly doable.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are very convenient and for the most part I love living in them. My roommate is very nice (I roomed blind) and my floormates are awesome! It's easy to find someone to help you study or to go grab a meal with. I love having my door open for people to come in and hang out for a while. It's a very nice atmosphere.

    Food and Dining

The food is great! MSU is constantly upgrading menus and cafeterias all across campus. For example, Case Hall just opened their new caf and they have a grill, soup and salad bar, a sushi bar, a crepe station with other desserts and a homestyle meal station. We have unlimited meals and a lot of the cafs are open from 7am to midnight. We also get a perk with our meal plan called Combo-X-Change from Spartys. We can get one on-the-go meal a day. There are variety of healthy, gluten-free and delicious options. You'll never go hungry here.

    What to do for fun

We show free, now-showing-in-theaters movies in Wells Hall every weekend and pool in the Union on Thursdays. There are little events every night of the week that are almost always free. There's a mall just a bus ride away from campus with great stores. Along Grand River, there are good restaurants, unique stores and favorite restaurant chains. The clubs on the weekends are always a fun place to go to and if you're not a club person a movie night in with friends in the dorms can be just as fun. The Red Cedar River run right through campus and it's beautiful along the banks. Taking a walk along the trails next to the river is fun and if you're looking for a hike, we also have trails in the woods on the East side of campus.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition plus room and board are very expensive so take classes wisely and explore Financial Aid and scholarship options. Even though it's expensive, you'll get a great education and have a good experience here. I suggest moving out of the dorms after sophomore year to try and cut down the cost of food and living expenses.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

During every night of Finals Week, everyone goes outside to scream at midnight to relieve stress. It's something to look forward to when you're up late studying.
We have The Rock on campus and it is basically a free-for-all billboard. You can paint an ad for your club or event on the rock but you must camp out overnight to win the right to paint it.
If you kiss under the Beaumont Tower at midnight, that person is your true love.
We have several big events in the beginning of the year where we learn about the campus's clubs and traditions. There's lot of free stuff too!
At football games, there are many chants and songs we sing and it is a ton of fun. They aren't hard to learn but you MUST know the fight song before your first game. It's mandatory haha.

Great for these types of students

Any hardworking, willing to learn, open-minded student would be great for MSU. You'll develop a great sense of pride for this school and you'll love being a part of it.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many! There's a club for seriously everyone. We have cultural groups, religious groups, clubs for certain majors, hobbies and talents. If there's not a club for the hobby you have in mind, then you can easily form one.

    Campus Safety

Safety is priority number one here. From anywhere on campus you can spot at least 2 greenlights for emergency calls. There's also one on every floor. Cops are always on call if you have an emergency at whatever time. All residence buildings are closed to the public after midnight and only those who live in the building have access. An ID must be scanned to use the elevator, to enter the residence floors and to reach to upper levels from the stairs. All side doors are locked until an ID is scanned. Also, we have a fire drill during the first Tuesday of every month just to be prepared.

Michigan State University is a wonderful academic institution that has lots of history. The campus is big and beautiful, the professors are knowledgable and it is easy to meet new people. My time here has been the typical big university experience and I've loved it every second.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Take a risk and sign up for a random roommate.
    2. Go to class. (at least for the classes that do not have notes online! but you should still try to go most of the time even for those classes)
    3. Take the time to meet the people in your dorm freshman year, a lot of the time you find people who you will be friends with the rest of your college career and maybe even beyond.

    Academic Rigor

I find some classes are easier than others. It all depends. The workload is usually reasonable.

    Dorm Life

You are required to live on campus freshman year. I loved my freshman year. The dorm cafeterias usually have good food and many of the actual dorm rooms have loft-able furniture, which is a plus, and the people you meet are awesome as well.

    Food and Dining

The food is great, but can get boring after a while because the cafeterias serve basically the same thing every week (every monday its the same thing..etc.) The exception is Brody cafeteria, which serves the same thing everyday, but it has more stations than the other cafeterias. I was not bored with caf food the first year, but I am the second year and I am ready to cook for myself now.

    What to do for fun

Hang out with friends in the dorms. Take a walk by the Red Cedar or through the Beal Botanical Gardens. Rent a movie for free from the RHA movie offices. Look at the stars from the Abrams Planetarium.

Michigan State is a great school! It's a big school--one of the largest campuses in the country!--but that's why I like it. It also offers just about any major or area of study you can think of.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid of how big the campus is; it will get smaller and smaller as the year goes by. It is also a very good idea to keep your bike here because it may be your main means of transportation. Branch out and try things you never did before, like clubs and whatnot--it's a great way to meet new people.

    Academic Rigor

I am in the Lyman Briggs college so my classes are a little harder than the typical university ones, but the classes are also smaller and more hands on, so I like it.

    Dorm Life

Can't get much better than living with some great friends.

    Food and Dining

The food in the cafeterias isn't bad, but it gets old after awhile.

    What to do for fun

This campus is full of opportunities to help you succeed and to help build your resume and there are groups or organizations for almost any interest out there. There are also plenty of people and professors around willing to help you succeed and give you advice, don't be afraid to ask for it.

Don't be afraid to ask for help, there are people there willing to help you in many possible way and be sure to take advantage of the free tutors available.

    Academic Rigor

Without a doubt, classes are hard and definitely require a significant amount of dedication towards studying and homework. Exams test your knowledge in a very mature and applicable way, its not straight forward.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is pretty awesome, especially for your first year. Living in the dorms is a great way to meet so many new people and experience and interact with different races. You know you are always safe and having a resident assistant there whenever you need him/her is also very comforting when making the transition into MSU.

    Food and Dining

Depending on which dorm you live in, the food varies tremendously. Brody Complex and Snider Phillips have the best food courts on campus and provide pretty decent food. Most all cafeterias have a wide range of food also taking into consideration the vegetarians and health seeking students. For not having to cook for youself, food and dining at MSU is pretty great.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do on MSU's campus, from the UAB events that are posted every week that brings the community together to all of the athletic facilities which include gyms, volleyball courts, swimming pools and etc.. When football season comes around there is nothing more exciting to do on a Saturday than go to a football game and cheer on the Spartans!

MSU is a school who's vast size doesn't hinder the education of the students. Aside from art, it has a wide variety of classes. Issue is that a lot of the professors don't know what they're doing.

    Tips for prospective students

Its normal to switch majors around. But makes sure you at least know what you want to do by your second year.

    Academic Rigor

If anything they overload us with too much homework. I mean you have to have at least 12 credits and those who have jobs find it hard to do their homework.

    Dorm Life

i really enjoy it here at msu because the teachers and faculty are very welcoming. they do everything they can to inform you about jobs, internships, events, and other important things you should know. everyone here has amazing school spirit that really adds to the whole experience, and it creates a unity that makes such a large campus seem small and familiar.

    Tips for prospective students

i think that it is important to keep in mind that the transition to college can be hard for many students, but it is also exciting, so do not get discouraged if you have trouble getting used to the new lifestyle at first. chances are, there are many other students around feeling the same way! just relax, and remember that the faculty and staff are here to answer all questions and help you make a smooth transition into college life.

    Academic Rigor

the classes at msu are challenging but not too overwhelming. as long as you stay focused and dedicate the right amount of time to studying, you should do just fine. also, the professors are required to have office hours, and they are usually quite helpful. you are welcome to ask questions or just stop by for some interesting conversations.

    Dorm Life

the dorm life here is really nice because the campus is split into multiple neighborhoods each made up of about four or five dorms. i believe that this characteristic is relatively unique to msu because whenever i mention neighborhoods to people who do not attend msu, they say that they have never heard of that. i definitely think that this is a positive asset for the university because it makes the big campus smaller. there are always different events going on in each neighborhood. because the campus is so big, each neighborhood has the chance to host guest advisers from multiple majors, tutoring sessions, job presentations, etc. so that students do not always have to travel far to reap the benefits that msu offers. also, many dorms have classrooms in them, so it is not always necessary to leave the dorm for class! overall, the dorms are not too small, and they are quite nice. i enjoy living in them.

    Food and Dining

i really enjoy the food here. there are multiple cafeterias in each neighborhood, and they each offer a variety of different foods, so there is really no way to get bored with always eating the same old thing or no reason to worry about never liking the food. also, the cafeterias host multiple events and theme nights when the cafeteria is decorated according to the them, and the food pertains to the theme. for example, there was a martin luther king meal during black history month. as a student, you are also allowed one combo-exchange every weekday, which is a meal that can be purchased at any sparty's cafe, and it is free for students.

    What to do for fun

there are always activities taking place on campus. every week the student union hosts cosmic bowling and a craft night, and the activities board hosts free newly released movies on the weekends for students. also, there are many performances by musicians, comedians, etc. there are also many plays, musicals, and dances.

msu is a great university and alumni association to belong to. walking around anywhere with a spartan logo, or wearing green and white uniquely and cohesively conveys the unspoken message that only those who have attended can understand- and that is what it truly means to be a spartan. michigan state is a family.

    Tips for prospective students

a tip of mine is completely cliche, and the phrase was, to me, one that i heard far too often at every college i visited and frankly never took too seriously. however, it is true: being involved on campus really enables your college experience to it's full potential. friends are easy to make, and there is always a social gathering awaiting your attendance. being a good student, but participating in anything that makes you happy outside of the classroom is something i recommend for everyone, no matter what it is. there are plenty of groups and associations and meetings to attend, and you will obviously want to buy tickets to sporting events because spartan fans are as good as our athletes when it comes to one thing in particular- spirit!

    Academic Rigor

if one puts in the time and effort clearly outlined by the class, one can certainly perform well all throughout their years here at michigan state. some struggle, and some swell with success- it is all about individual attitude, how in-touch you are with your own aptitude, and putting in the energy necessary to get the grades you deserve. it is not about getting' grades here, and i think msu does a great job of making sure those that receive high grades have put their time in.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is traditional to what one expects when they attend college- small rooms, close quarters, shared bathrooms. however, all of that usually pales in comparison to all the great friends you meet, the pretty stellar food in the cafeterias (brody=mind-blowing), and it provides the perfect transitional housing quarters for a person in such a transitional state, a college student.

    Food and Dining

food and dining are always a pleasure here at msu. the new brody cafeteria is seriously off the hook, with claims of being the largest non-military cafeteria in the whole country (swag). so many options, so many choices for healthy or not-so-healthy, and the meal plans for on campus dining are always reasonable.

    What to do for fun

for fun there is a number of things to do. from attending the varsity sporting events, to participating in an intramural sport or joining a club sport gives a huge variety to a lot of fun activities and fun people, and is a good way to stay in shape after hitting up the brody caf. there is a large network of greeks (fraternities and sororities) which can really kick-start your university-life's social networking. there is a lot of clubs that get together people of the same interest, whether it is an academic niche, or the ski club which travels together to colorado each year, there is something for everyone. outside of the more scholastic realm of msu, the party scene can be totally outrageous and is sometimes a key factor in why people may attend this university over another (uofm). michigan state can show anyone a good time.

    Bang for the buck

bang for your buck at msu definitely has it's boundaries. anything on the opposite side of grand river ave (prime location) is leasing companies turf and the rent prices they often come up with are definitely on the south side of receiving enough 'bang'. as for tuition and such, it is not a cheap school to go to, but you will want to have michigan state university on your degree over any school that might be cheaper.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

spell out m.a.c. when pronouncing this popular street name. any attempts at shortening this name will, annoyingly enough, earn you a few laughs.. or at least a few freshman's.

Great for these types of students

msu is great for students who like to have fun, be social, but take school seriously and hold academic integrity and achievement at a high level.

    Greek Life

lots of fraternities and plenty of sororities. some people live by them, some people hate them, but most people don't mind them. they throw big parties, but also do a lot of good things for the community and such so i really think if that sounds like your thing, to look into it. some people characterize them by their clique-iness, but each one is different and i would hate to categorize them all, or all the people in them. it's whatever, really.

    Campus Safety

sometimes i get creep-ed out at night, but never for any substantial reason. those who study super late at the library can be walked home almost any night of the week by a member of the safe walk committee there at msu's main library, which is a great feature that i think expresses the universities involvement on safety while at michigan state. the police keep good check on most aspects of the campus and east lansing community, and they are actually pretty laid back people. if they see something out of line, in excess, or dangerous they will intervene... but i haven't often heard they are out of place, overbearing, or anything really of the sort. to me, it is obvious they are there for us, to protect us from dangers, even those brought on by ourselves.

michigan state had everything i was looking for in a university-challenging classes, all types of students, and a beautiful location to call home. as an undecided freshman, i appreciated the wide variety of available classes and majors. the 500+ student organizations offer opportunities for everyone to make friends and get involved in campus life.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. seek out friends with whom you truly enjoy spending time. this may sound obvious, but it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of any university if you don't make an effort to meet people. many students make friends in their dorms. other common meeting places include clubs, religious organizations, sports teams, and classes. college can also be a time to reinvent yourself and change for the better. choose friends who will help you become the best version of yourself.

    2. be responsible. this is college-you no longer have to ask permission to use the restroom during class, and no one is going to call your mommy if you fail a test. freedom is great, but it places your future in your own hands. professors are typically more than willing to help you if you ask, but none of them are going to hunt you down and remind you to turn in last week's homework. go to class. study. keep track of your assignments. being a grown-up really is not difficult if you put in a little bit of effort.

    3. make time for fun. sure, you're in college to get a degree, but you need to enjoy yourself along the way. i grew more as a person through the friendships i made, conflicts i resolved, and leadership roles i took on during my time at msu than i ever did by listening to a lecture or writing an essay. having a perfect gpa is nice, but having a good gpa, growing as a person, and being happy is better.

    Academic Rigor

join the honors college if you get the chance. incoming freshmen can join with a 30+ act score, and msu freshmen and sophomores can join with a 3.5+ college gpa. honors college members get to sign up for classes before everyone else, can take any class they want (regardless of regular restrictions or prerequisites), and get to choose their dorm freshman year. the best part of the membership is the vast array of courses available for general education requirements. non-members can choose from a selection of 7-10 classes for each general education requirement. honors college members can choose from tons of classes to satisfy the same requirement. they get more freedom in customizing their own degree programs. another perk of membership is being able to take honors sections of regular classes. these sections are usually smaller more challenging. rigor is not limited to only honors sections-a student can earn honors credit in nearly any class by arranging to do a special project with the professor.

    Dorm Life

many different types of dorms are available. some house only 300 students, while others house nearly 1000. about half have community bathrooms for the entire floor, while the other half have suite-style bathrooms shared between two rooms. floors (or at least wings) are typically separated by gender, although coed floors are available. one dorm (yakeley) houses only females. dorms are arranged into complexes which all have at least one cafeteria. some classes are even held in dorm buildings; this is especially common for students in residential academic programs. dorms are constantly being updated and redone to make them pleasant places for students to live.
unique residential options are also available in dorms. for example, there are honors floors for honors college students, and quiet floors with special courtesy hours. students can also choose to live in dorms with other students in their major or college. for example, science majors may choose to live in holmes, while political science students may live in case.

    Food and Dining

every meal plan is unlimited, meaning students can go to the cafeteria as many times as they want. this is especially nice for late-night snack runs and going to the cafe just to socialize. the university is in the process of updating all the cafeterias. three new cafeterias have opened since 2007, and all look similar to a large mall food court. these cafeterias give students many different meal options and are generally better than the other cafeterias. currently the cafeterias in case, brody, and snyder-phillips halls are the best. this section gets three stars because of some of the older cafeterias that have not yet been updated. the new cafeterias would get five stars. regardless of which dorm students call home, they can eat in any cafeteria. students who live off-campus can also purchase smaller meal plans, and eat on campus at their leisure.

    What to do for fun

there are fun activities for all types of people at michigan state. many freshmen and sophomores spend time hanging out with friends in the dorms. there are also movies shown on campus that are free for dorm residents. the university activities board brings entertainment to campus in the form of concerts, hypnotists, comedians, and more. broadway shows regularly come to the wharton center on campus, some of which offer discounted tickets for students.
there are many restaurants and shops on grand river (the main street north of campus) for students to explore. house parties also take place in the student housing off of grand river. older students have a variety of bars from which to choose-karaoke, pool, dancing, and sit-down bars are all available. there is also a dance club under one of the bars for younger students.
as a big ten school, michigan state offers a wide variety of activities for any sports fan. football, basketball, and hockey games are the most popular sporting events for students to attend, and have active student sections. even non-sports fans find themselves going to football games to spend time with friends and cheer on the spartans. other big ten sporting events such as volleyball, soccer, and gymnastics are available at no charge to students.

    Bang for the buck

while all four-year institutions are expensive, michigan state was recently rated one of the most reasonably priced schools in the big ten. freshmen and sophomores pay a lower rate per credit hour than do juniors and seniors. tuition typically increases every year. scholarships are available, yet competitive. each college within the university offers scholarships for which students can apply.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

every night during finals week students participate in midnight scream. this involves a campus-wide scream to let out frustration, bring spartans together, and throw a little fun into finals. midnight scream is most fun in large dorm complexes where there are a lot of people, but can be found in nearly every dorm on campus.

Great for these types of students

michigan state is home to over 45,000 students, about 35,000 of whom are undergraduates. the means all types of students find a place to belong at msu. i can't think of a single type of person who couldn't find a place to fit in at this school. even students who like the idea of a small school can make the university small by centering their lives around studies, their dorm, and a club or two. this aspect of msu is nice, because students can get create a small-college atmosphere or blend in to the crowd.
every type of student can find commonalities with fellow msu students. there are plenty of sports for jocks, numerous research opportunities for studious types, volunteering activities for activists, and performances for budding actors, just to name a few.

    Clubs and Activities

there are over 500+ student organizations at msu. students can participate in intramural sports, religious groups, academic organizations, or hobby-related clubs. during welcome week each fall, students can attend sparticipation-an event where nearly every student organization has a booth with information about how to get involved. from the rugby team to the catholic student organization, to the coffee club, msu has something for everyone.

    Greek Life

those seeking to get involved greek life have many options at msu. rush is held each semester, and students have many houses from which to choose. greeks have opportunities for formals, parties, and big-little bonding. some greeks fit the snob stereotype, while others are perfectly nice. checking out different houses during rush is a good way for prospective greeks to find a fit.

    Campus Safety

students are pretty safe at msu, so long as they use common sense. walking alone at night is not recommended, especially for females. students traveling in groups at night are typically safe. students can use the safe walk program to get walked from the library to their dorms from dusk until 1 am. the night owl bus program will also take students between any two points on campus from 2 am until 7 am. there are green emergency phones all around campus and in many dorms. with a little street smarts, students can feel safe at msu.

MSU is big, no doubt about it. What seems overwhelming at first holds a plethora of opportunities for every student out there if you only look for them. A top research university, MSU also offers great poli-sci, history, study abroad, and the ever-popular Turf-grass Management program.

    Tips for prospective students

Carry a map. Carry more than one map. In fact, carry a bag of maps and leave 20 minutes earlier than you think you need to. North campus is confusing at first, but don't be discouraged, it becomes easy after a while. Bring your bike. Get out there. Everyone always says that, but most people don't listen. But, from what my friends say, the regular university classes are not that difficult if you actually try. Many people make the mistake of coming here simply because its an easy school, its not, you have to apply yourself just like anywhere else.

    Dorm Life

A roommate will make or break your dorm experience. I hate my roommate and never talk to her even though we are within 3 feet of each other most of the day. However, I do enjoy the simplicity of dorm life. It is very nice having a lot of friends and people so close by to hang out with.

    Food and Dining

YUM! I was worried at first about caf food, but MSU has amazing food options. Rarely have I had something I don't like, and if you don't like something there are always plenty of other yummy options. Watch out for the freshmen 15!

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on every night of the week. Never did I sit in my room for more than 30 minutes without something to do. On weekends there are always parties and if you don't want to go out, dorm parties are always going on too(even in the nerdy dorms).

    Am learning a lot

What I realized after the first few weeks of my college career was that I was unable to skate my way through the semester. Some professors assign lots of reading and others don't. Unfortunately, my professors all shared one thing in common, they loved reading assignments. It's easy to put work like this off, however, the work load builds up. I think that as long as college students learn how to manage their work load, they will find that the college classes aren't too bad. With this, I also believe that as long as students make the effort to take in and understand the information, they will get so much more from their learning experience. I am confident to say that I have learned a significant amount my first semester. In order to do well in classes, I have noticed that making a connection with a professor is just as in important. For example, professors love when their students attend their office hours. It makes it clear to them that the student actually cares about his/her class.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love Michigan State! I can't imagine being anywhere else but here! After a week of my winter break, I'm ready to go back. There is always something to do, the students are always friendly, and there is a place for everyone, whether that be in greek life, clubs, or sports. It has been the best days of my life at Michigan State and I will always be Spartan proud.

    Bang for the buck

I honestly have nothing to say but positive things about Michigan State. The people I have encountered are nothing but friendly, my classes have been quite a challenge that have expanded my knowledge, and activity on campus is significant. I know that upon graduating from Michigan State, I will more likely be considered for a great Graduate school program or easily find a job. My suggestions are to take as much out of what is offered to you as possible. There are so many opportunities for activities on campus that you can become involved in. Just take advantage of what is being offered to you and embrace it.

    Tips for prospective students

Be outgoing, reach outside your comfort zone. You will meet friends that you will keep in your life forever.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont be the average naive freshmen. Buckle down early and get good grades your first year and it can be a great foundation for your gpa instead of something you spend your entire college experience trying to make up for. Reminder, it is very common for employers to ask for a transcript of your college grades.

Great for these types of students

Students who are looking for both a great college experience and a place that can provide them with a future. Michigan State is a place where you definitely will have to apply yourself academically but there are also many other ways to get involved with other students.

Michigan State offers many opportunities for me to expand my academic horizons. I love being able to explore many interests through the Honors College general education substitutions.

    Am enjoying being here

MSU's campus can be overwhelming at first, but once I became used to living at school I absolutely loved it! I have made a bunch of new friends and gotten closer with ones from high school. Downtown East Lansing and the surrounding areas offer many opportunities for a break from campus, especially for shopping!

    Bang for the buck

Some amenities that other colleges offer for free are not free at MSU, such as using the fitness center, riding the bus, laundry, or having a car (side note: you cannot have a car as a freshman). However, MSU offers unlimited dining plans to on-campus students, students can get discounts on campus and around East Lansing, and there are many fitness classes as well as other seminars that are free for students to attend. Also, every sport but men's football, ice hockey, and basketball are free for students as well. MSU is a Big Ten School, and although some things aren't free, the excitement of being on campus as well as everything else that is offered makes attending a good buy.

    Tips for prospective students

Walk around campus before classes start and carry a map during the first week of classes; campus is large and takes time to get acquainted with.
During the first few weeks, try and make an effort to stay on your floor! It's fun to hang with friends from high school, but you want to be able to be friends with the people whom you live with.
Do NOT buy a buss pass for the first semester. It costs 60 cents to ride the bus, and $50 for a bus pass-since the weather is nice for most of the first semester it is a waste of money. However, DEFINITELY buy one for the second semester (since it is colder, snows more, and gets dark earlier)
Get to know your RA! He/She is there to help and its good to have him/her as a friend (hang out in their room!),

Great for these types of students

Academic individuals who know when to work hard, and when to take a break and have fun.
Those looking for a full-fledged college experience.
Those who want to attend a school that offers support at every turn and provides them with a multitude of academic opportunities and possible majors.

A reality check and difference is the thing that hit home for me. I felt the transition I was making from a high school graduate to a college freshman. It puts a lot of responsibility on me to put the effort into my own education. One thing that was very helpful for me was all the tutoring available. I swear, there had to be a Engagement center in every dorm I walked in to helping with any subjects needed. I mostly used it for the Math help. The professors I had were cool and understanding. I haven't ran into that one mean professor. I took advantage of their office hours if I didn't understand the material addressed in the class.

    Am enjoying being here

Being a freshman, I've never ran across another student who did not want to give me tips and/or advice on how to make it through my first semester or directions to a building. Upon my arrival, people were super eager and friendly to get me on beat with college life. There were so many student-ran events that I really liked because at my high school nothing was really student ran with no help from teachers. After being on campus for a couple months, it hit me that I am a real college student and the movies I've seen about college is TRUE. It's always something to do at Michigan State; whether its going to class, a sport, club, planning an event or volunteering. You can't ever say you're bored. The university even emails you with opportunities to get involved in. It's so cool to me being around other people with the same ambition and whose working towards the goal of graduating as me.

    Bang for the buck

Now, being a freshman and having to pay some of the cost out of the pocket, I was analyzing everything MSU had to offer for almost 25k a year. I didn't appreciate how they'll charge you fees for radio usage and newspaper even if you didn't own a radio or read the university paper. It wasn't much, approxminately 15 dollars at the most, but still that kind of grinder my gears. Also, I couldn't print papers out if I didn't purchase E-tokens. That bothered me a lot because I'm paying almost 25 thousand dollars a year and they are telling me I can't print for free or cannot get a toliet lid, or have my water come out clear.A major thing that really bothered me to the point where I wanted my tution lowered was the racisim that has been happening around campus. I feel like I pay a lot of money to go here and to be a part of the Michigan State Family. What I did not pay for is for students to yell racist slurs across street, vandalize bathroom, or post signs on student dorm doors protesting against black people. I feel like it's wrong! On the other hand, MSU does have really good sides such as really really good food, nice college feel (excluding the racism), the education resources to maintain success, extra-curriculum, the clubs, sports, and amenities.

    Tips for prospective students

Michigan State is an awesome school. It gives you the feel of being in the college based movies. There is always something to do and explore. Come in with an open mind for any potential reality checks. Every place has its group of people who are mean, however there are plenty of friendly people to make long term friends with. Beware of the freshman 15, it's true with all the good food that MSU has to offer.

Great for these types of students

If you like diversity then this is an excellent school for you. Yes Michigan State has a good reputation and everyone is working toward the goal of graduating, but if you cannot handle that you will be around all types of people of all ethnic back grounds, with different preferences and lifestyes, who are international students, or if you cannot handle being on one of the biggest campus then this is not the place for you. Come in very open-minded and ready for change.

Whether you want to become a surgeon or work in the non-profit sector, Michigan State is the college for you. They have a major for any career that you want to pursue. I'm learning things in my courses that are going to help me out in the real world when I graduate and begin looking for jobs. MSU has offered me a very well-rounded education.

    Am enjoying being here

The most appealing trait that MSU has to offer is its school spirit. Most people on campus are friendly and the sports and clubs that MSU has to offer gives everyone a sense of belonging and community. The classes are challenging, but not impossibly difficult. The campus life and night life on campus and off is exciting and fairly safe. I love MSU and would not have chosen a different school to attend.

    Bang for the buck

The kind of education that I have received here at MSU is definitely worth what I am paying for it. Tuition is about $20,000 per year, and with the option to reduce your student loans, you won't have that much money to pay back when you graduate. It's definitely worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

Get older professors. You have the option of choosing which professors you have, so do your research on them! The older professors (over 50 y.o) are kinder, care more about your learning the material, and are overall better teachers. They're more flexible with extracurricular activities and you can tell that they really care about whether you learn the material or not. Also, you'll learn a lot more.

Great for these types of students

Students who may be unsure with their major-you don't have to be decided on a major until junior year, and until that time, you can complete your university requirements so that you're not taking classes that won't count in the long run.
Students who want a social life-MSU offers an abundance of activities to do for those students who want to balance a healthy lifestyle of school, work, and social life. It's also great for those of us who'd rather stay home than party.

Michigan State is a prestigious school, it is a Big 10 school and has top of the line professors. There are over 100 different majors and and schools, ranging from Agriculture to Law. It is a wonderful place to find what it is you would like to do as a career. There are so many clubs to chose from, and professors to obtain research experience under. Every new aspect of Michigan State University is a learning experience, making the most of your college means getting to know your professors, obtaining research positions, and sharing knowledge with people your age. Michigan State has world renounced professors, some whom give speeches on their research, they are approachable, and so very knowledgeable. Michigan state has some schools that are top 10 in the country, and leading research centers too.

I love it at Michigan State, the student life is lively. You can find anything you are interested in, with the many clubs and classes. You meet so many people in classes, and in organized clubs. There are multiple social school related events in the beginning of the year to introduce to incoming students the different types of things they can potentially get involved in. The night life here is also a great aspect to the college, there are many free events being hosted on campus any given night of the week, and friends frequently get together to enjoy themselves.

    Bang for the buck

Michigan State is expensive, but the education you earn will be paid for when future employers see that you did well at a highly accredited college. There is student employment that works very well around class schedules, and the financial aid office is open anytime that you may have a question.

    Tips for prospective students

From that very first day, it is encouraged to immerse into the college life. Join clubs, meet people, get a job, people scare you about how college is so hard, but if you have time management skills you will do fine. MSU is a great undergraduate school. The professors really take the time to teach their undergrad classes, which makes the students really want to learn. They make the expectations clear and follow through with them, which helps students adjust to the college style, and therefore learn better. The diversity of classes allows for truly unique learning styles and topics, keeping students involved and interested. Overall, MSU is geared towards helping students learn in the best way possible for them.

There is so much to do on MSU's campus and in the greater community. With as many opportunities for involvment, it's next to immpossible to be bored. Tips for prospective students

Go in with an idea of what you want out of a college and ask questions about what MSU can do for you. Expect a challenge, and expect it to be worth it, if you put the work in. Most of all, have some fun.

Michigan State University is a phenomenal school. During my time at the school I took mainly health and science based courses required for my major. I also took courses required by the university to graduate. The courses I have taken have been both challenging and stimulating. I especially like how interactive the courses are. It is a relatively large school and I have had very few classes that are not interactive. Speaking specifically to my major (nursing), I have to say the school as been great. The College of Nursing at MSU was ranked number one in the state of Michigan this year and that speaks for itself. The College of Nursing is very individualized. You almost feel like you and your professor are working together one-on-one. It makes for an excellent learning environment.

    Am enjoying being here

MSU has it all--academics, athletics, extracurricular, night-life, clubs, volunteering opportunities, and a highly ranked study abroad program. I feel like my education here as helped me to be a very well-rounded individual. The school pride is so exciting to be involved in on football game Saturdays and basketball games during the winter. Everyone on campus seems to be personable. I can be standing at a bus stop or walking down the street and I can guarantee that I will meet someone new every day I step foot on to campus. Walking down Grand River to get something to eat or do some shopping during the warmer weather is a lot of fun. If you like partying, there is plenty to do between house parties and the bar life. If you don't like partying, there are plenty of other things to do. The Wharton Center is also on campus which is great if you want to go to a musical or play during the year...short walk!

    Bang for the buck

Michigan State does not have the cheapest tuition. But for the amount of education and experiences it offers, you can't complain because it is still cheaper than other colleges in the state. If you need financial aid there are SO many scholarships, loans, and jobs to apply for on campus. For the study abroad program, they also have a lot of scholarships for students who would not be able to afford it otherwise. Even though I feel it is worth the money, it is a little bit depressing that we have been having some of the highest tuition hikes in the state the past two years.

    Tips for prospective students

-Live in the dorms for the first year (usually required) and MEET people! I'm going into my senior year at MSU and I am still best friends with several people who lived on my floor that I met freshman year.
-Get involved! There are so many clubs and groups you can join no matter what you enjoy doing.
-Volunteer! There is a website that MSU offers to volunteer every year. It's a great resume builder and is usually required for applying to some degree specific colleges at the university.
-Get football tickets for at least the first year. Yes--they are expensive but football Saturdays are a once in a lifetime experience. You will always remember these days when you look back at college.
-Keep your grades up, especially during your first year. I know several people who slacked their first year of college and could never get their GPA up again. Introductory courses are relatively easy if you put time into them and stay motivated. GPA DOES matter in college if you are applying to a graduate school, med school, or a specific college after one or two years (business, education, nursing). So, for pretty much everyone GPA MATTERS.
-Study abroad. It's one of the best colleges to do so because there are so many different places to go.
-Experience night life. Go to a house party. Go to the bars. Students at MSU know how to have fun!
-Bring a bike or buy a bus pass. The campus is small enough to walk around but if you don't want to leave a half an hour-45 minutes early for classes for every class, you may want to do this.
-Go for a walk or run on Cedar River. Its beautiful especially in the fall!
-Don't buy books at Spartan bookstore in the international center. Overpriced!

Great for these types of students

Everyone. There are so many different majors you can choose. Health field majors, business majors, and education majors are what I see the most of but there are several other great programs as well. If you're looking for a college that you can get a great education at but can also have fun with extracurricular activities and making friends-this is the place to go.

Michigan State is a great learning environment. As an English and Japanese double major, I feel that I am gaining a full and healthy education from the staff, who are both knowledgeable in their subjects and generally available when students need help.

In addition to the educational benefits of MSU, there are tons of enjoyable campus activities and associations. There is also a good international community. I am a member of two international groups, as well as volunteering at International Student Orientation every summer. This all represents how open and inviting I think this university is.

    Bang for the buck

Considering the education that is available at Michigan State, it is not surprising that the cost of attendance is so high. In general, I feel that the prices for tuition itself is more than satisfactory, but I do have some issues with the pricing of room and board. The university does sometimes have the tendency to go overboard with trying to make dormitories and campus look attractive rather than useful, wasting money that could have been spent elsewhere.

Currently, I am going into my senior year at Michigan State University as a Special Education major. For seventeen years in a row, MSU has ranked #1 in its graduate programs for elementary and secondary education. It is also very well ranked in its undergraduate education programs. Most students have been able to work and observe classrooms since their sophomore year in college. It is for this reason that I am highly confident in my education at MSU. I have been given multiple opportunities to work with students already! I have taught a student literacy one on one. I have also worked with a student with a reading disability. Plus, I have worked in a special education classroom and sat in on an IEP.

When I am done with my program, I will not only have a Bachelors degree, but I will have about half of my Masters program finished. This program has taught me a lot about lesson planning. One of my favorite parts about the program is that we are not only taught how to teach a subject area, but we learn through observation. For instance, in my science class, I was not simply taught how to teach science. The instructor taught us science and modelled different approaches we can take in this subject area.

The one challenge I have faced is the amount of freedom I am given in my various projects. Since every student is unique, there is not a set formula in how to teach them. So, I constantly am going to my instructors with questions. For the most part, I have gotten instructors that have been able to give me good advice and really help me cater to my students' needs.

    Am enjoying being here

I am highly enjoying being away at this university! There is always something to do on campus whether its a football game or a concert. There is something for everyone. Plus, the bus system is wonderful if you need to get to Meijer or the mall. Also, there is a little strip of stores on Grand River, which is right across the street from campus.

The food on campus is good or bad depending on the cafeteria you go to. The best places for food are the Snyder-Phillips and Brody cafeterias. Brody's cafeteria actually is the largest non-military cafeteria that feeds the most people per day in the United States.

Also, it is almost overwhelming how many clubs there are on campus. There is literally something for everyone. One of my personal favorite activities is swing dance club every Tuesday night! You get free swing lessons. There is also Latin and Ballroom dance.

If you are looking for something to do on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night, UAB plays various movies not yet released on DVD in Kedzie. Or, you may want to play a game at the Union! They have various activities there. You may get to be on a campus game show like The Dating Game or you may get to watch a runway show put on by students with fashion design majors.

If you look, you are bound to find something on campus you will enjoy doing.

    Bang for the buck

This is the part that is most difficult for me to talk about. Since I have not gone to a different university, I cannot really compare. Academically, this school is well renowned for its College of Education. Yet, I have come to realize that if you are an out-of-state student, it may be best to look for a public university in your state first. Out of state tuition is equal to that of a private education. If you are able to get into the Honors College, then definitely come because you will have in-state tuition. If you cannot, then you may want to think where you go.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you find your classes beforehand for the first day so that you are not lost.

Get to know your instructors because they can be really helpful.

    Use the Math Learning Center.

    Look for scholarship opportunities.

    Get to know your RA.

Live on campus your first two years because this is very helpful for networking and making friends. It's all about the experience!

Get involved in a club or organization because that is the way you will make friends and you need to do something you love at least once a week to keep you sane!

Study and hang out with friends. Find study buddies. They can be really helpful if you have to miss a class. Also, they may have picked up on some important information you did not pick up on in class.

GO TO CLASS! Even though you may be able to skip class, try not to because most exams are based on the lectures a teacher gives.

    Do not procrastinate.

Have fun! Relax! Work your hardest, but don't forget to have fun because in the end you do not want to look back at your college years and think about how terrible they were.

Do activities at the Union. Go ice skating at Munn. Go to a football and basketball game. Feed the ducks on the Red Cedar River.

Great for these types of students

This is great for students who are very social and organized. Sometimes the college can be a bit unorganized trying to keep track of 45,000 students. So, if you are able to keep records on everything, great! A student needs to be disciplined to get their work done here because there is always something to do that could distract them. So, the two important things are to be social and organized/disciplined.

    Am learning a lot

Michigan State offers a variety of intellectually challenging courses that push students limits. While some courses can be difficult because of communication difficulties between professors and students or simply because the material is hard there can be no excuse about lack of resources. With places like the Writing Center, The Math Lab, and help rooms for almost every course imaginable (not to mention mandatory office hours from professors) there is no reason any student should not learn everything possible while attending here.

To put it simply, there is nothing better than being a Spartan! I never thought such a big campus could have such a sense of camaraderie. Students and professors alike are incredibly friendly and then there is the famous Sparty who is always there for a high five or a laugh. You will never get a better experience than the big 10 football games while standing in the student section and for the non sport buffs the Wharton center is constantly busy with plays, music and more!

    Bang for the buck

MSU is expensive; yes. But what university isn't? Despite the cost there are almost limitless events and resources available to students. Movies hosted by the RHA every Friday, the Union with free bowling and pool on Thursdays, more student led clubs than anyone could possibly count (including preproffesional clubs, athletics, and even Quidditch!), some amazing new cafeterias, the list goes on. Whatever your fancy, MSU offers it on behalf of the tuition you pay every semester.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Join a club! Outgoing or introverted clubs are where you're going to meet some of your friends for life. These people will share a common interest with you and might even be in some of your classes! (can you say study buddy?)

    2. Talk to your professors. Yes, it can be a little intimidating. No, they won't bite. The professor knows the material and can help you whenever you get stuck. I've even had a professor offer to help me study during her office hours! They can be a great resource, not only for your classes, but for jobs and letters of recommendation too.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great for the extroverted students who don't mind wandering around campus or big lecture halls. Not all classes are huge and some majors have classes in only a few buildings so introverts there is no need to fear! Best of all East Lansing offers a moderately sized city, what with Lansing just down the way, which is a great stepping stone for students from a small town looking to move up or a big city looking to step away.

MSU has had a great impact on me in the past year. Not only have a learned a lot of new information from my professors and other faculty members at the school but I have also learned a lot about myself. I've learned how to better manage my time and money and I'm learning how to make new friends and how to get along with everyone in any type of environment.

    Am enjoying being here

So far, this place is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I lived in the dorms last school year and ended up meeting some of the most amazing people. I've many lots of new and interesting friends and there's so much to do in East Lansing. I always have a good time and there's lots of good places to hang out with friends.

    Bang for the buck

Overall, MSU is an amazing place. The people are friendly, the professors are great and will always help you if you need it, and the campus just has an overall homely feeling that makes this school a worthwhile place to be.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest piece of advice for future students is to make sure you always get your homework done as soon as possible because there are a lot of distractions in east lansing. Also, make sure to give yourself enough time to get to class every day.

Great for these types of students

MSU is great for students who want to branch out and meet new types of people. These students should have a willingness to learn and not mind walking a lot (since its a big campus).

At Michigan State University you have the opportunities of a life time. There are hundreds of classes to choose from and all of them are very interesting. Like any school, some professors are better than others and some classes just don't satisfy your taste in education, but you are sure to find plenty of courses that you will love. I personally have loved all of my classes thus far and cannot wait for next years classes! Although you may think that college is all about learning in the classroom, you actually learn so much outside of lectures and recitations. College consists of four years of experience and learning not only from professors but from your peers and friends as well!

    Am enjoying being here

MSU is a great school to be at. Although the campus is giant, you become accustomed to it very quickly and feel right at home in no time. With over 45,000 students you are sure to find people to fit in with and enjoy your time with. There are plenty of extracurricular activities to participate in and lots of fun things to do over the weekend so you definitely grasp the entire college experience.

    Bang for the buck

College isn't cheap, that's for sure! I am an out-of-state student therefore my tuition costs are much higher than those of students from Michigan. Paying for college is definitely a great burden on families and a lot to deal with, but I think that it is well worth it to spend that money on a great university like Michigan State. The classes are all interesting and you learn a lot, the buildings and dorms are great and even the food isn't that bad! You are definitely paying for a great learning and life experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply Early! There's nothing better than feeling the stress and anxiety of the college applications process being over. It's also beneficial to you as a student to apply by the first week of November because MSU is really good about responding promptly. I received my acceptance letter within 3 weeks and it was great to know that I am already getting into schools!

Great for these types of students

Michigan State University is great for students who like big campuses and lots of people. It is also great for NCAA athletes because it is a Big 10 school and we have a great football team and basketball team as well. There are tons of Division One Teams you can be on and if you don't aspire to be a professional athlete one day, there are plenty of intermural and club teams to join. Over all, anyone can have a great time at Michigan State and thousands of students and alumni can agree that MSU is/was the place to be!

So far I feel that each class I have taken has been beneficial. Though there have been boring and hard classes, I feel that they have helped push me. Unfortunately, there will always be classes you do not enjoy as much as others. At MSU, there is variety of classes you can take, so there is the chance to learn a lot of new things during your time here. Personally, I feel that I have learned a lot more ideas that were new to me than review to me.

    Am enjoying being here

I have enjoyed my first two years here at Michigan State. Overall, it has been a good experience and I have met some really cool people. I have also had the opportunity to find a part-time job on campus, which allows me to work at times that fit with my class schedule. I have had professors, though, that I did not like very much. Although this is the case, I feel like that is an issue possible at any university. I also commute and have since my freshman year, so I have not received the full college experience.

    Bang for the buck

Although it has been underrated by some, you are definitely getting the bang for your buck at Michigan State. Being recognized as a public Ivy has also heightened my respect for the university. There are so many opportunities here and numerous chances to have your questions answered. There are also a variety of programs to choose from and in some cases, the option to design your own major. I definitely do not feel that I have been robbed of a solid education by attending this university.

    Tips for prospective students

Join clubs. There are a large variety of clubs and organizations to join. This is a great way to meet people.

The faculty at Michigan State offer a depth of knowledge that is unlike that of any other university. Professors get involved with your education and even offer research opportunities working with them. The education is outstanding and can even be excelled by getting involved in the specialized colleges MSU has to offer, such as Lyman Briggs College and James Madison College. Even if you are unsure of your major, MSU offers hundreds of classes that range from science to politics, arts to design, and english to engineering, and each program is taught with depth by the Professors.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is absolutely beautiful. The faculty and other students are friendly and welcoming, and there is nothing like the Spartan Stadium on a cool fall morning! MSU offers hundreds of educational programs, clubs, fitness classes, and on campus activities. The campus is built for the student and offers a comfortable, fun living environment.

    Bang for the buck

Michigan State was the perfect choice for me. I would not be recieving the excellent education I am anywhere else, for MSU's Lyman Briggs College offers me a unique and specialized study in sciences that no other colleges could compare to. I am able to study in smaller classes, talk one on one with my Professors, and enjoy being involved with all MSU has to offer.

    Tips for prospective students

If you wish to come to MSU, come with an open mind! With everything offered at MSU, trying something new is key to making the most of your college education. The diversity of classes, students, and activities at MSU will open your eyes to the real world, and can be the best time of your life if you are open and willing to try something new! Be prepared to work hard and strive to be the best you can be, but also remember to relax at times and enjoy the benefits of MSU!

Great for these types of students

Michigan State is great for any student striving to pursue a career goal, or even a student who is unsure of what they intend to do with his or her future. The university offers hundreds of programs that are unique to each individual, and the faculty and counselors are friendly and willing to advise determined students with majors picked, or even those who are unsure. If you are a determined individual, wish to attend a graduate school, enjoy a challenge, or want to study hard in a diverse community-MSU is right for you!

Your professors really do care, especially in the honors college. The professors are concerned about your grade and about your work. They don't want students just memorizing information for a test and then getting a 4.0. They want students getting a 4.0 because they actually learned. Even my friends outside of the honors college say their professors are some of the best instructors they ever had. Professors aren't just a talking head at the front of a lecture hall at MSU.

    Am enjoying being here

There is enough time to do well at MSU, and then have a great social life. The weekends are fun and safe, and there are enough things to during the week that there is never a dull moment at MSU.

    Bang for the buck

Like most secondary institutions, tuition, room and board, and books are expensive. However, the price is definitely worth the experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. MSU puts a lot of effort on extracurricular activities. My friend was rejected from MSU with a 27 ACT score and a 3.5 GPA. He wasn't involved in anything. My other friend had a 21 ACT and a 3.1 GPA, but was involved in everything under the sun, and was accepted.

Great for these types of students

Students that like new experiences and aren't scared to try different things. The great thing about MSU is that so many different people come here, you are sure to find people with similar interests. MSU is a place where you can make life long friendships.
