    Am learning a lot

Most teachers are passionate about their jobs and they love being at North Carolina Central University. Teachers are always available outside of class to offer you help whenever you need it. There are also so many other resources to use on campus whenever you feel that you are falling behind in your studies

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many organizations and clubs to join on campus that there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored or not enjoy being here. There are also plenty of parties, sporting events, forums, or anything else always going on. There are other schools around that you can visit as well.

    Bang for the buck

This is a really inexpensive school and this school offers plenty of scholarships and work study's for students.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in the party life and hanging out all the time...if you do you will end up paying for a real expensive party (tuition). I don't believe that any party is worth $4,000-$5,000. Also, learn to make friends and don't sit in your room all semester or you will miss out on a lot of fun opportunities. Any college student will tell you: COLLEGE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT...if you want to have a good time then you will versus if you sit in your room all the time, then your college experience will be realllll lame!

Great for these types of students

NCCU is great for any time of student. This school has something to offer to everyone no matter your skin color, religion, race, or sexual orientation. Everyone is bound to fit in and make something of themselves.

    Am learning a lot

First tip: Get to know your professors and don't be afraid to ask questions. That's what they're there for.

    Am enjoying being here

NCCU always has lectures, plays, athletic events and more, so to try and take part in whatever you can to help you enjoy the college experience.

    Bang for the buck

After scholarships and grants, the costs of tuition and books should be extremely manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

    Study hard, then have fun.

Great for these types of students

Anyone with an interest in learning.

    Am learning a lot

Being a student here, it is required to take a Dimensions of Learning class that teaches you about the history of NCCU and you begin working on a portfolio of your resume and practice cover letters. The first year you get most of your core classes out of the way, and it gets easier as you go along. The teachers are doing a great job and are very helpful outside of class.

    Am enjoying being here

Like most people say College is what you make it. I personally don't like to go to parties, but if that's your scene then there are parties almost every week and weekend. If you're like me, there's still other things to do on campus like play cards, pool, and just hanging out in the multipurpose rooms, along with a lot of programs about different topics.

    Bang for the buck

I think the in-state tuition is very affordable and there are a lot of resources for any issues you may have or incur so it's all worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't procrastinate and there is no excuse to not have your homework in on time because you are given a syllabus of all of your assignments on the first day. The only thing is unlike in high school, teachers don't remind you when assignments are due so you have to be very responsible and on top of your work.

Great for these types of students

Students who have great school spirit and are very involved in extra curricular activities.

    Did learn a lot

NCCU did teach me a lot, I can admit that. Some teachers were better than others, but overall, the educational aspect was pretty well rounded. However, most of what you learn about life is taught outside of the classroom. NCCU will do well in teaching you about safe sex, time management, and even African-American heritage.

    Did enjoy being here

Coming from a bigger city, Durham is just okay. The campus itself was only eventful during Homecoming. The weekends will be dead and unless you find your group of friends, you will be bored here quite often. This school just wasn't for me, aside from the majority African-American population, which I did like.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition isn't high for in-state students, so it's average. For what you learn, I don't think it's that bad.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn time management and do your best to find a group of friends to spend time with.

Great for these types of students

For students who want to get out of their city and get the HBCU experience, this is the university for you.

    Am learning a lot

North Carolina Central University so far has provided me with the tools to succeed in the world of law. As a current sophomore who has just finished my first semester, I do hope that my second semester will continue to go as i had hoped. Teachers at NCCU do look out for you. From experience I was given the opportunity to bump a Psychology grade up one letter. Not only are they willing to work with you, but they do give you a fair amount of time to complete assignments. Lastly, I will leave you with this. You will learn everything you will need to continue into you major courses. Whether that be public speaking, or writing a speech. NCCU will ensure you are well equipped with those skills.

    Am enjoying being here

When I first got to North Carolina Central I was very, very nervous, because I was not sure what to expect. So far with one year, and a semester under my belt I have since over enjoyed my stay at Central. As a current member of the Screaming Eagles Organization on campus my sophomore year has been 10 times better than my freshman year. I recommend anyone to choose North Carolina Central University to get the full experience of attending a Historically Black College/University (HBCU)

    Bang for the buck

Though North Carolina Central University's tuition is higher than most other HBCUs in the state of North Carolina you do see the ways in which the money is being distributed. Not only have they built a three story state of the are cafeteria, but a new bookstore, parking garage, School of Nursing, and residence hall are being built to relieve pressure off of other dorms. Books are also available. Since I have been here there has not been a shortage. NCCU will also give back to the students by allowing us to sell back our books at the end of each semester receiving half of the initial book value in return.

    Tips for prospective students

I will give the same tips to prospective students, as my family. friends, and church members gave to me. Never go in with the mindset that college is time to let loose. Doing that could put you into an academic mishap, which could result in not being able to continue due to lack of academic achievement. I will also say this, NCCU's financial aid office is always crowded the day of move in. I recommend that if you are getting any financial assistance that you take the necessary measures early. Once students receive access to NCCU Banner/MYEol that is the best way to keep track of financial aid. Lastly, have fun, but not to the point your grades suffer.

College is what YOU make it. if you go to class with an open mind willing to learn for your teachers, peers, and even your own experiences you will be surprised how much information you will gain.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE college, but I LOVE NCCU so much more. Besides being a beautiful campus, the staff and students are great and very welcoming. Central was not my first pick but I'm very glad that I decided to attend.

    Bang for the buck

With the economy the way it is, it seems as if prices everywhere are going up. I feel as though what I'm paying is not bad, however, I do wish it could be a little cheaper.

    Tips for prospective students

    PRIORITIZE
PARTIES ARE OK, BUT STAY FOCUS
DO NOT WATSE YOUR REFUND CHECKS(THE EXTRA MONEY WILL COME IN HANDY)
BE CAREFUL OF WHO YOU CALL YOUR FRIENDS, IT'S COLLEGE BUT SOME PEOPLE STILL HAVE HIGH SCHOOL MENTALITIES
ENJOY YOURSELF, THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
DO NOT OVERLOAD YOURSELF WITH CLASSES
    GRADUATE, ON TIME IF POSSIBLE

I am learning a lot of new things and I becoming very mature and more independent. The school is amazing and the professors are great.

    Am enjoying being here

I am very conservative and I don't really associate with anyone because I am having some bad experiences. Overall I enjoy the college life.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused and remember that you are in college to be a student first. It is okay to socialize and hang out but don't forget to do your work. It's OK to be different. Remember that getting behind on your work is easy, it's the catching up that is hard. Schedule to meet all of your professors so that they know you by face not just name.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who is ready to learn and is willing to do what it takes.

North Carolina Central University a great school. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle, at North Carolina Central University there is a sense of camaraderie and family. Truth and service are our core values that propel students into the future.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay organized and on top of your work. Always make two copies of all of your documents.

    Academic Rigor

The course curriculum at North Carolina Central University is rigorous depending on what type of major you are and what classes your counselors put you in. Most classes are geared towards your major within the second semester of your freshman year, so those classes are typically harder than your general education classes.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life iss fun. You get to meet plenty of new people and experience what it's like living on your. You also get to make new freinds, have great laughs, and lasting memories. Many of the people you live with in the dorms come from all walks of life and are interesting characters.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay. Sometimes in the cafe you get what you love, some days you have things you hate, and then other times you have things that you want to try because they are new. We have international night where we pick a country or culture and make meals native to that culture. We also have Fun Night where thereis a whole breakfast line for dinner or an ice cream bar. There are also Chicken Wednesdays and Fish Fridays where all they serve is chicken and fish on Wednesdays and fish on Friday. We also have our Eagles Nest where there is fast food dining style food.

    What to do for fun

Depending on the time of person your are there are alot of activities to do. We have a variety of plays and cultural ensemble musicals. We have political forums to raise political awareness. We also have a multitude of clubs and organizations, as well as modeling and dance troupes.

    Bang for the buck

North Carolina Central University will give you a quality education for cheap. It gives you many opportunities for those who seek them.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have 10;40 break, where no one has class during that time. There's music, club meetings, and any other academic things going on. We also have a bowling alley on campus called The Lanes.

Great for these types of students

North Carolina Central is a great school for any type of student. We have a little bit of what everyone may be interested in. We are a hub of cultural diversity with over 8,000+ students from a wide variety of states, countries, racial groups, and cultural/ethnic backgrounds.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs and activities here are great. We have something for everyone's interest and hobbies. Like I said before we have varous modeling and dance troupes. We have different academic clubs and whatever we don't have you can pitch as an idea for a possible addition.

    Greek Life

Our Greek Life is okay. They host many pageants and community service projects.Their parties are good as well, a moderately favored activity on our campus.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety could be better. We feel safe, but there have been incidents where certain residents around our campus will walk on, unsuspecting students and adminstartion might mistake them for actual students. The campus police station is right across the street form our main dorms. There are Emergency Stations located by a bright blue light in various blind spots on the campus and the plice call-response time is done within a timely manner.

North Carolina Central University is rich in history. The professors as well as the administration are all very knowledgeable and helpful for incoming freshman. The classes are a bit challenging, but overall very intriguing and leave you wanting more.

    Tips for prospective students

Do you research before you select your school. Conduct a college visit with your parents. Talk to Alumni. Apply for scholarships daily.

    Academic Rigor

The professors were top notch. School assignments are challenging.

    Dorm Life

You can meet friends for life in your dorm. The dorm rooms are a great size, you get one roommate. The facilities are clean. Some dorms have kitchens and game rooms.

    Food and Dining

Attending college down south, where the food is impeccable, like being at home with your grandparents. Instead of the freshman 15pounds, most students gain the freshman 30pounds.

    What to do for fun

You can join all kinds of social clubs. Play cards with friends. Shopping is convenient to campus.

    Bang for the buck

North Carolina Central has a renovated campus. The campus dorms are all air-conditioned. The administration is great. Students come from all over the United States and abroad.

North Carolina Central University deserves a grade of a B. Reason being is because faculty, staff, and administration are working to expand the university, as well as, diversity and student morale. NCCU has been the number one HBCU since 2009 and we are struggling to keep it that way with all the changes and advancements.

    Tips for prospective students

To prospective students, i would say to first find a mentor on campus who can give you the in and outs of campus life. get involved, this way you can always have open doors and opportunities for yourselves to maintain. Lastly, i would say stay on track with you financial aid, because if not, it can become a hassle.

    Academic Rigor

As far as this subject, you work at your own pace and make sure your adviser becomes familiar with you. As long as you stay in top of your school work and register for classes on time, you'll be fine. Also, remember to start out with at least a 3.0 GPA and build up from there each year.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life can be very strict for Freshmen entering into the university; however, your RA will assist you with almost everything. It's fun at times when students get together and have study sessions with one another. however, co-ed visitation ends at 12:00 A.M., therefore, you must plan ahead.

    Food and Dining

The food mediocre once you get used to it. There are healthy choices within NCCU's dining service and various types of foods. The cafeteria staff work hard to serve the students and we also have website that allows students to see what's on the menu. With the wide array of Chinese, Mexican, Italian and Caribbean students can enjoy themselves and get a taste of different foods.

    What to do for fun

Literally for fun, get involved. Most organizations go out of the state, like Washington, D.C. They go to other countries, or they have competitions, poetry slams, zumba, community service, etc. it's also a great opportunity to network with others for internships, college recommendations, etc.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition raises every year and right now, we are looking at $6,000.00. There are also other fees that contribute for the service of the students. Cost of attendance is worth it, because you get what you put in for. Also, with the new buildings on campus, students can enjoy newer dorms and facilities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location on campus would be the founders house and the NCCU centennial garden. The founder's house was burned down before my attendance and now they have and exact replica. It's kinda creepy when entering, because everything in their is designed the way he had it. Remember, the school was founded in 1909, that many years ago and the house stands as a representative. The garden just enhances the houses features.

Great for these types of students

North Carolina Central University is great for all students, because we do not discriminate and we are a liberal arts institution, providing all types of majors. We appeal to athletes and students who aspire to go to law school, business school and nursing school.

    Clubs and Activities

We offer over 800 clubs and organizations for all interest and majors. Also, if there is not a club that you identify with, you can always make one of your own. Being involved in clubs allow you to not only network, but keep your grades intact. Clubs and organizations also introduce students to new opportunities and other future organizations at NCCU.

    Greek Life

Since we are an HBCU, are Greek life is not that diverse. However, Greeks participate in certain events and community service as well as the students. First and foremost, they are students and they make an impact on campus life for others.

    Campus Safety

On our campus, we receive crime alerts almost everyday. Someone has been held at gunpoint, harassed, robbed or their stuff has been stolen. Campus police do what they can to protect students; however, they cannot see everything that happens.

    In three sentences

The severe lack of diversity causes many social issues which in turn makes the university feel less as a place of learning and growing, and more like a temporary pause on one's life. The buildings are old and rickety as well as the sidewalks. Also in the summer and fall months the campus is overrun by larger than usual cockroaches who seem to walk the sidewalks without caring about possibly getting squished.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not attend NCCU. Unless you get a full or partial scholarship and you have NO other offers, I wouldn't consider going here. Even if you DO get a scholarship for that school, I would still consider you rethinking accepting it.

    Academic Rigor

If you join University Honors Program At Central, then you will have access to a lot of useful academic materials that aren't available to other students. Also the specialized Honors dorm provides good places to study, its own library, and a close-knit environment unlike the rest of the campus.

    Dorm Life

Elevators frequently break down which could be a big problem if you live in one of the upper floors of Baynes or Eagleson. Janitorial services don't work on Saturday and Sunday so the trash frequently gets backed up and the smell floods the hallways. If anything breaks or you need some sort of service to your bathroom or doors/locks it takes at least a full wek if not 2 to get it fixed.

    Food and Dining

The quality of the food is decent. I would consider it slightly better than that of your average high school. In comparison to other Universities, our dining options are fare more limited than any other I've visited. The cafe serves the same stuff weekly, and there isn't much fast food around.

    What to do for fun

Nothing. Besides dorm parties and clubs, which every campus has, there is nothing really to do on campus. The one activity that most people do on the weekends is go home.

    Bang for the buck

Honestly, ANYONE would have a much better experience at ANY other college. There is no bang for however many bucks you'd have to pay to attend.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's chicken Wednesday's, and Fish Friday's like any HBCU.

Great for these types of students

    Urban African American

    Clubs and Activities

Not enough clubs or activities. There is modeling, and a couple of intramural sports.

    Greek Life

There is a strong Greek population here. The Greek bowl is where all the Greeks have their plots. It's a pretty cool area. I can't speak much about the Greeks because I'm not in a fraternity.

    Campus Safety

There are always emails notifying the students of a crime that happened on campus. Whether it be robbing, mugging, or molestation, this campus is never short on crime. There's probably 6 campus police but they seem to never be around when something bad happens. We have emergency button towers spread around campus but that is the only safety precaution we have.

    Academic Rigor

Academically, this school has it's challenges. If you don't know how to manage your time, I suggest you don't join a lot of clubs and/or engage in a lot of activities. Focus on you school work.

    Dorm Life

I stay in Baynes Hall. It is the oldest dormitory on campus. The elevators are always getting stuck and the building definitely needs an upgrade. But there are many other dormitory that you can choose from and will definitely enjoy. Chidley, which is the newest dormitory, and Eagle Landing, which you have your own room, a full kitchen, a living room and 3 other suite mates, are the most popular.
Ruffin Hall is also very popular, this is where all the athletes stay.

    Food and Dining

Chicken Wednesday's and Fish Friday's are the most famous days in the cafeteria. It is pretty much full on those days. The cafeteria is nice, it is only about 3 or 4 years old. It has multiple lines so you won't be in there all day, a variety of tables so you will be able to sit anywhere, and televisions so that you will have some entertainment will you are eating.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities that occur everyday on campus. Step shows, Wild Out Wednesdays, Spring Fling, Homecoming week, Pre-Dawns, etc. All these events are the most popular, and they are definitely something you do not want to miss. The club life is also fun. There are shuttles that come in handy, if you don't have a car.

    Clubs and Activities

Too many to count. You will more than likely find something that fits you and you will enjoy it to the fullest.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is very exciting. You will always see the greeks on campus. They are always stepping and chanting.

    Campus Safety

Make sure that you stay on campus at night fall. Do not walk alone. There are emergency polls on almost every corner, do not be afraid to press that button for any reason.

Stay focus and remember to stay humble. As you walk around campus you will see stickers that stay Stay Humble. It's a reminder that you van do anything you want but will you get there be respectful, and thankful for where you are currently at. Also, there are plenty of things to get into sense Durham is an area of transit, but please stay focus on your education. In the words of NCCU chancellor Charlie Nelms destination - GRADUATION.

    Academic Rigor

The work load can be a lot but if you study and focus you can do it. Plus, NCCU has a wonderful tutoring schedule, because earning and keeping great grade are a must.

    Dorm Life

North Carolina Central University has great dorms to choose from. Ni matter wear you stay they are great and each dorm has activities of its own. Whether its movie night, fitness in the multi-purpose room.

    Food and Dining

Yes, the best part about NCCU. Knowing you can go in the cafe and get a wonderful and healthy meal. here are 6 lines to choose from and all of them has something yummy. Even if you dont want to eat in there is take out, so if your in a rush you can go in and out. On Wednesday, the cafe is packed. We call it Chicken Wednesday the best southern food on that day. People even dress up and no telling what might happen in the cafe.

On a 1 to 5 scale, 1 being the lowest I would rate NCCU 4. I love the school spirit the school shows, the teachers for the most part are very personable and the classes are very collaborative; meaning that debate and voicing opinions are encourages in classes. I would refer anyone to the school for academic purposes!

    Tips for prospective students

Just always keep organized and on top of deadlines. It took me 2 years to understand the importance of a planner. Also, get to know the professors so that you are more than just a name and it makes it easier to talk to them.

    Academic Rigor

You will definately have to learn the criteria. If the techer doesn't require a text then you'd better believe the tests and other assignments will be intense and if they don't provide powerpoints, READ, READ, READ ...even the charts, tables, side notes and know the objectives.

    Dorm Life

Sucks...For me anyways. I'm just overwhelmingly neat so it was an adjustment for me to get used to the bathrooms, the kitchen and even the laundry rooms. As far as staying informed, and having a big group of family it is excellent .

    Food and Dining

It's an Historically Black College University so there is always something different and flavorful in the cafeteria. They even have charts up showing the number of calories and have lines for vegetarians, diabetics and others that want to eat healthy!
My only complaint is that it gets old after about 2-3 months BUT there are maybe 4 others restaurants ON campus

    What to do for fun

Predawns, night clubs, game rooms, cookouts, events from greek life, SGA and SAB parties, 10:40 break (music, fun and sometimes food in the morning and sometimes at night), basketball, footbaal, softball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, weight lifting and so much more.

    Bang for the buck

I'm currently on the fence, right now I can't complain but tuition MAY be going up. The money includes 2 shuttles that run all day around the campus for lazy people, it includes $700 for the student health building (also for medications), usage of the gym and swimming pool but the life lessons are priceless.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Meditation room, nail salon, barbershop, and blood drives are things NCCU has that I don't see at other universities.

Great for these types of students

There is something for everyone at NCCU

    Clubs and Activities

    Countless.....

NCCU gets a rating of 4 stars. They have teachers who honestly want to see you succeed. NCCU gives you the resources to excel after your college career.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for prospective students is to quickly get out of university college. All transfers and incoming freshman need to learn there course schedule and the proper advisers and professors to associate themselves with once you enter the university to ensure you only spend four years at NCCU.

    Academic Rigor

Excellent programs and courses to help you graduate with the best up to date knowledge.

    Dorm Life

Dorms can be tricky; it is an open university and NCCU has had it's share of neighborhood altercations that have spilled onto campus a few times. NCCU has a shortage of dorms and upperclassmen are forced to find housing around Durham. Some apartment complexes offer good housing at affordable prices, but rent is more than mortgage payments so be aware of what your getting for the money.

    Food and Dining

There are several wonderful affordable places for students to eat. A restaurant called Gigi's has the best meals for about $6.00, um um good. There is a restaurant called Bowicks Arch on the same street as the University that have the best soul food for the lowest prices. And of course there are the popular restaurants like chili's an applebees with the two for twenty's and half off appetizers. Really great food around campus; you will not starve.

    What to do for fun

There is always club events and campus parties and neighborhood pool parties. You can go eat, bowl or run over to Frankie's fun park and go cart it up.

Great for these types of students

The campus is literally great for all races and nationalities. Very diverse even though it's an HBCU.

    Greek Life

    Greeks always fun.

    Campus Safety

It's an open campus, always be aware of your surroundings anywhere; being on a campus is no excuse to not protect yourself at all times.
