Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers that I have had for the most part have been amazing. Use upperclassman and online prof. grading sites as a resource though, because there are a few snoozers out here. If you can catch the right professor at this school, they can change your life.
Am enjoying being here The weather is perfection. The atmosphere is also far more laid back than you'd expect at an Arizona school. The tools of the southwest must have all settled for ASU, because most people at NAU seem to be down to earth. The town is smaller than a big city, but it's surprisingly comfortable and incredibly relaxing. The social life is exciting enough for me to be able to party whenever I want, but reasonable enough for me to still be able to get the education I'm paying for.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are so many opportunities for students to get into in Flagstaff it's unreal. Greek Life is it's own little world, but those that are involved seem to love it.
Great for these types of students If you like the outdoors or are like me and want to experience a change in environment then NAU is for you.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot heard the student to teacher ratio is 17:1. Pretty good compared to other colleges. People I know who go there say the teachers will know you by your name, not just another number in the class.
Will enjoy being here Love the outdoors. Very green school.
Bang for the buck One of the only schools where I can get a degree specifically in my field, and not through a different field with my field incorporated in it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The books can only tell you so much but when you bring good teachers in, who know the books and know the material, you get the most out of your classes. Here, there are great teachers who don't just stick to boring lectures with a billion power points and more stuff than you can write. They make the material interesting and easy to understand by being enthusiastic about what they are teaching.
Am enjoying being here The weather up here is awesome and it makes the outside fun to be in. In winter there is so much snow compared to other places in Arizona. The people here are trustworthy. I can leave my snowboard outside for a second without worrying about someone coming out and taking off with it. It is safe here.
Bang for the buck You get what you pay for. That doesn't mean that the more expensive the school is, the better the education you get. It means that your getting the same education here as you would at an expensive school because you have to pay with effort. The fact that it's less expensive here simply means that you won't stress out about paying a ridiculous tuition. You have more time to focus on the classes your taking and on using all the facilities that come with attending this school.
Tips for prospective students Work hard and get into the clubs here. They are fun and you will meet people who can help you out when classes get tough. Don't procrastinate on applications for scholarships either. The clubs here have scholarships just for members so take advantage of them while your building friendships and progressing through life.
Great for these types of students Any type of student who enjoys fun in the snow, great weather, good teachers, and nice people. Athletes love it here because they get an intense workout that people in other areas may not have because of the elevation. People who are environmentally involved enjoy the forestry programs here. Mainly though, students who want to work in the medical field of research can cooperate with the Arizona Cancer Center for a career working with them.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Many of the teachers here are very helpful. They want you to do well and succeed. When I found out that I had to have science for my major, I was not happy because I don't like science, but once I had my teacher I loved it. It was the first science class I really enjoyed. The class size is about normal to high school, except science classes are usually bigger in size. with the class size being the same, you get to know the teachers and will help you if you ask. I would talk to upperclassmen though before you choose a teacher, as in all other places, not all the teachers are that great, but mostly they are.
Am enjoying being here I came to NAU with knowing no one. When I mean no one, I mean not a single soul. My roommate was random and I don't know how they did it, but we hit it off. People thought we knew each other and chose each other, but we didn't. I love that NAU has learning communities so everyone in my wing was about the same major as me. Also having a great RA is nice too. I thought I would have a really hard time because I'm shy and didn't think I would go, but now I'm glad I did.
Bang for the buck It really depends on if your in-state or out-state and where your family stands money wise. I'm out so it costs a lot of money for me with that and my family. In-state, I hear its really good. Something to consider is looking at your in-state and their out-of-state tuition if you are. For me the cost was a difference, but not that much for what I wanted. NAU could give me what I want as here not so much
Tips for prospective students If you know anyone there, talk to them or better yet talk to your teachers. I was surprised when so many of my teachers had heard of it or knew someone that went there and said it was a great school. In the end its really about what school will fit you and if NAU it then great, but check all your schools out before you choose. If you choose NAU, get involved, it makes things better and there are a ton of activities and clubs out there for you to join.
Great for these types of students Education majors for sure. NAU started out as an education college. If you play hockey, you should look into it, we have a pretty good team. Also if you like the outdoors, this is a college to look at. Really I don't think there is one group of kids, I think its for all groups. The hard workers, the average, the sporty, the shy, the nature loving, the loud, etc I have seen them all and friends with all types, just one other reason why I like NAU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Like any college it is really up to the student to take the time to learn what they need to. NAU sets students up with people that can help them to understand but they don't tend to teach it to you. Whenever I asked questions I would receive answers but I had to ask the questions or the information was left to the wind.
Am enjoying being here The campus has its good parts and bad parts. The people are rather friendly and the facilities are set up nicely to be as student friendly as possible. The only part I would change is the dorm set up or enforcement of rules within them.
Bang for the buck I felt like a lot of things were not reasonable in the charges made with them. For instance parking permitts are almost $300 and they have it situated that even with a parking permitt you can only park in one place on the entire campus. The meal plan is rather expensive for the quality of food but I guess in the long run it is worth it.
Tips for prospective students Try and find a friend that lives off campus so that you dont go stir crazy in the dorms. By fruit and leave it in your back pack so that you dont go to the vending machines for chips and soda everyday. Join a club!!!
Great for these types of students independant, fun, spontanious students

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have switched majors...oh...five times at NAU, but wouldn't change it for the world.
NAU, for the most part, has amazing professors and staff who absolutely love teaching their students.
They never give off the feeling that they don't want to be there or don't care about you, and professors can influence your college career far more than you think.
Plus, NAU might be the underdog of Arizona's public Universities, but we everyone loves an underdog and we show that with how good our education is.
Plus, the smaller classes at NAU (one of their major selling points) are truly better than your giant lectures, simply because you get more one-on-one time with an instructor dedicated to that field.Am enjoying being here Alright, so being from Phoenix made it difficult to transition to the snow, that I expected. But, I didn't think I would eventually despise the snow + wind + the freezing cold.
But, on the upside, snow means skiing and with Snow Bowl (the local ski resort) within 30 minutes of NAU, I've learned to not hate snow as much.
Otherwise, NAU's weather is absolutely fantastic. We are like a mini Colorado, but with slightly less snow and rain.
In addition to gorgeous mountain weather, NAU's community is one of the nicest around. The students are friendly, welcoming, and happy to be here.
I am even extending a year because I love it so much here.Bang for the buck I can only speak as an in-state student, but NAU locks their tuition for most incoming Freshman, so you won't have to worry about the insane rise of tuition rates year-to-year.
Plus, NAU has been upgrading its campus and with a new state-of-the-art, green (LEED) certified Recreation Center (Gym) opening up this fall, you can't beat the free access to such a place.
NAU is also a campus college. So you get to be apart of campus, saving you money on commuting (which can definitely add up).
They also offer free printing for students, up to 10 pages a day in the L.E.A.D Center, have meal plans on campus, you can take almost any class you want, and more.Tips for prospective students My number one tip for possible future students, visit NAU. Their is something about this place when you are here, walking around, looking at it, smelling the air, and feeling with your own senses. Just being on campus makes you feel like a student.
Tip 2:
Bring warm clothing. Since, Flagstaff is located in the Mountains we can get variable weather every year. Some years it is freezing, others not so much. Two years ago we got about 8 feet of snow, and finals were cancelled (wohoo!!). So understand, Flagstaff doesn't have the most reliable weather.
Tip 3:
Get involved when you get here. As soon as you get involved you will love everything, because you will find your group of friends (outside of the dorms) and feel like you are really a part of NAU
Tip 4:
Be willing to meet new, different, people. NAU is great for diversity within Arizona.
Tip 5:
Live in the dorms, they might sound scary, but are really fun.
Tip 6:
Keep an open mind.Great for these types of students Outdoor lovers and enthusiasts. If you like hiking, camping, mountaineering, climbing, etc, then NAU is your place hands down!
Nursing students -- NAU has a great program.
Those who want smaller classes.
Those who want to live on campus.
Environmentalists - NAU wants to be carbon neutral by 2020 and any new buildings that have been built within the past 5 years and any future building will be LEED certified.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am either learning a lot of new things or learning more about the things I learned in high school which is really nice for me.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy being here. It's a lot like back home which is soothing for me. Winters are nice but Phoenix is also two hours away so heat is easy to get to if you want that. It was definitely one thing that drew me to Flagstaff, AZ.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for harder classes and a lot more work depending on the high school that you attended. Time management is key in the first year because how you mold yourself then will help you be the student you want to be for the rest of your college career. Don't be afraid to ask for help because there is so many options for you as students to succeed and be the best student that you want to be. Finally, you don't have to go into college knowing what you want to do. A lot of people I know are trying to get there pre-rec classes out of the way to help them figure out what they actually want to do and most students change their majors multiple times so don't stress out about it.
Great for these types of students Northern Arizona University is great for students who like being outside any time of year. It's also a really good school for science majors but I could just be bias to that because I am a science major. :) I do know that it is a great school for physical therapy and nursing but you have to really want it and work hard for it but that can be said for anything you really want to do.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot A lot of the teachers I have had, really have influenced my decision on my major, for the better. I have enjoyed a lot of my teachers because of their learning techniques. But I have also had some horrible teachers who, to this day I glare at when passing them on campus. I recommend going onto www.ratemyproffesor.com and looking up the professors before joining the class.
Am enjoying being here Flagstaff is a completely different environment from the Phoenix Valley. Only being two hours away, makes a world of difference. You are in a college town. Every restaurant, every store, all college employees. You also have a more of laid back scene. More diverse.
Tips for prospective students You have to ask yourself if you can handle the snow, and the cold and the bipolar weather, as well as the wind. We are more windy then Chicago. And every winter continues to get worse, but that also means more snow days and less school. Plus we are only 25 minutes away from the nearest ski resort.
Great for these types of students NAU is so diverse, anyone from anywhere can fit in just fine. Be open and outgoing, you will do great.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Northern Arizona University offered me the full package so that I could pursue my dreams of a college education. When I started the search for the perfect college for me, I had three requirements: Pre-med/biomedical major, football team, and almost as important, snow! Not having NAU at the top of my favorites list, my family and I visited the campus while visiting some universities in the state. After our Discover NAU weekend, I had fallen in love with what the university had to offer and what Snow Bowl would offer during the winter.
I am now a sophmore, who went through some home sick periods and adjusting to dorm life but completed my freshman year on the Dean's List and nominated to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Even though my family is from San Diego, they visited often and we shared some great times on Family Weekend and at NAU football games. I even found a new appreciation for the beach and San Diego weather on my visits home from a chilly climate. Reuniting with my high school friends during the holidays and spring break were ever so meaningful since we all went off to college in our different directions. But, by far, my Snow Bowl season pass, and weekends snowboarding with my friends were worth all the bumps, bruises and soreness I had becoming an accomplished snowboarder.
Going to college is such an exciting experience and full of firsts. Not only the educational opportunity, meeting new friends, being independent and adjusting to making my own decisions but most importantly, for me, was the education in life. I have grown and matured as a person.
I recommend the college experience and I recommend NAU. As I continue my college degree, I have set higher expectations to pursue after my undergraduate studies. Medical school and becoming a medical doctor have been my dream and goal. I have tried to adopt the philosophies as spoken by Booker T. Washington, The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows; it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts. The financial challenge is somewhat overwhelming but I try to keep my mind focused on Booker T. Washington's philosophy. I know in my heart that my determination while help me find my way to obtain this dream. I thank you for allowing me to share my story and to encourage others to pursue their dreams.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The teachers at NAU show a great amount of interest in their students and are very focused on helping their students achieve a higher education.
Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful and so compact. I'd say that the closeness of the campus and its students has a very home-like feeling.
Bang for the buck The programs offered are motivational and really help the students to be successful. You can study in all types of career fields, and my personal choice is the medical field. NAU has a pre-med program that will help to condition those who are planning to enter the medical field by preparing them for what they should expect in medical school.
Tips for prospective students There are so many programs offered that will help to fulfill the necessary requirements to earn your preferred degree.
Great for these types of students Those who would like to live on campus. Anyone who gets homesick easily. Anyone that enjoys the beauty of nature. Anyone who is looking to make their college experience enjoyable and their career successful!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers here have been extremely helpful and get to know you personally if allow them. This has helped me on several occasions were I found myself in a tight spot such as getting lost in the material.
Am enjoying being here The weather is wonderful (as long as you don't mind a few weeks of snow here and there) and everyone is so accepting of each other. It is really laid back, so you can strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone. The bike trails are open, there's the lava tubes to hike, the camping site, it's just a wonderful place that becomes your home before you know it.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. If you don't you could feel kinda lonely, but once you do, you tend to enjoy every minute of your time here.
And don't be afraid to get help if you think you need it, there are plenty of people here who's job it is to help you, whether you need help getting involved or you need help in your classes there is someone there.Great for these types of students If you enjoy enjoy meeting meeting new people and a life greatly linked to nature, there is no way you would want to miss out, as it is all connected here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Teachers are great. They definitely know what they are talking about and try to make things fun.
Am enjoying being here Love the people and the atmosphere. The snow makes everything better, too.
Tips for prospective students Some classes are bigger than others, but only for the ones that are necessary for most degrees such as the COM 101 and PSY 101 classes. Be at least 15 minutes early, if possible, to these classes. You'll want a good seat. The teachers are there to help you and so are the SIs (Supplemental Instructors). Take advantage of the help, classes, homework and tests will be so much easier.
Great for these types of students Outdoorsy, social, lover of cold weather

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a Bio major, and the course load is very indepth and very well presented to the students. The faculty are very approachable, which makes learning much easier because I am not ashamed or afraid to go up to my teachers and ask questions.
Am enjoying being here Since I am doing work most of the time, I don't enjoy myself as much as I should. However, the college is integrated with the city of Flagstaff, and there is a good relationship between college students and townspeople. There are monthly art walks and always fun activities going on both on the campus and in town. There's also loads of extracurriculars like fraternities, sororities, and MANY philanthropic organizations that students can get involved in. I managed to get a job as a Supplemental Instructor within my first year as a college student and I've never enjoyed working so much! The faculty, again, make this college wonderful. I am also involved in the honors program and the Honors faculty in particular are a jovial lot- very approachable, very humorous, and very very intelligent.
Bang for the buck I am involved in a program called the Western Undergraduate Exchange. I am a California resident, however I am attending school in Arizona because NAU is the best campus for me. Thanks to the WUE program, I am able to go out of state without completely paying out of state tuition. I pay more than instate residents, but less than many other out of state colleges. NAU also has a four year guaranteed program - they promise not to raise tuition for the four years that you are enrolled on their campus, which is wonderful considering tuition is rising every year at every other campus.
Tips for prospective students Bring sweaters- there's cold wind up here! Know what you want to do, but even if you don't people at Gateway (freshmen academic advisers) are very helpful. ASK QUESTIONS! All the faculty I have encountered are very very approachable and usually very knowledgeable. Even if they don't have answers to your questions, they will send you to someone who does. Don't be afraid to go chase something you want! If you want a job, go ask about it - you might get it!
Great for these types of students Motivated, people who may or may not know what to do, students who want options in extracurriculars (From Ultimate Frisbee to Honor Societies), good program for students with disabilities, social people

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of my classes are fairly small so I get help when I need it. There are also lots of resources to use outside of the classroom. Communication centers for help with papers, SI sessions for reviews before a test, and learning resource centers in my dorm for easy access. Professors are knowledgeable and approachable.
Am enjoying being here People from diverse backgrounds. The weather is great, always sunny. Campus feels safe and is very clean. Lots of people to meet. Close to town and other activities besides the ones offered on campus.
Bang for the buck A personalized and quality education.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus while students are still there to get a better perspective of the school's atmosphere and if it is right for you.
Great for these types of students Lovers of the outdoors and those who want to feel like a student and not a number.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences its a neat school, plenty of diversity and activities or clubs that appeal to everyone.
Tips for prospective students it is not very difficult to get in. there's a lot to do on campus and the students that go here are social and outgoing.
Academic Rigor almost depends entirely on what classes you take and who your professor is.
Dorm Life depends where you live. many people like their dorm, many people do not. all of them though are nice and bearable.
Food and Dining it gets old after a semester or two. some days it can be really good, some days not so much. soon enough it feels like there is no good option on where to eat because you've eaten there so much but the dining areas are still great places to socialize and eat.
What to do for fun i exercise, socialize, go hiking, play games, get involved with my dorm or on campus activities.
Bang for the buck out of state is pretty expensive but you can get a good education here. most of the different departments of study are big and popular of nau.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is 'first friday', it is more of a flagstaff town event. it takes place on the first friday of every month and it is like a festival in town where the shops show off their goods and many people go to socialize and have a good time as they walk around and see the town. on campus near the end of the spring semester is the 'undi-run' where students show up to a location on campus and undress to donate their clothes to charity and goodwill then run a small route through campus in their underwear.
Great for these types of students anyone, unless you like living in a big city.
Clubs and Activities lots. you can find many different clubs here. there are outdoors clubs, ones for fitness, common interests, socializing, academics...etc
Greek Life im not involved
Campus Safety there are cases of certain crimes and incidents happening, but the campus does take great measures to keep the students safe. there is security to escort people around campus after dark if needed. emergency phones are all over the place. security cameras are at nearly all of the entrances and stairwells of buildings.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot They have an exceptional Hotel Management program with new facilities. Also they have a wine and beer class where you can brew your own brew (granted you have to be 21 to take it) but its great for anyone interested in the culinary field.
Will enjoy being here The only thing is...I don't like the cold, and it definitely snows here. But there are heaters in all of the dorms and the sidewalks have the hot water pipes underneath so the snow melts off of them making it easy to move around campus. Speaking of moving around, they also have free bikes and buses so no need for a car on campus.
Bang for the buck It has the 4 year guaranteed price level. I say that's worth it. If you're an AZ resident with the AIMS scholarship you can use it towards study abroad. (something that UofA doesn't do) Also even if you don't have that the study abroad tuition is the same as NAU tuition.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot NAU prides itself for being a school with a wide range of academic class options with challenging and stimulating criteria. The professors are incredible and truly care about their students as a whole. Be sure to get in touch with them and utilize the many different campus resources such as Cline Library, the Gateway Student Success Center, and the Learning Assistance Center as well as countless other resources if and when you find yourself struggling. The campus really caters to students who care about their grades and academic standings!
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful, the weather is temperate and Flagstaff, AZ is a GREAT college town with so much to do! Be sure to take advantage of the many outdoor/wildlife opportunities in the surrounding areas. For example, if you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, be sure to check out the Snow-bowl resort located just outside of Flagstaff! The environment is friendly, clean, and very supportive. I couldn't be happier.
Bang for the buck As is the case with virtually every College in the nation, tuition can be steep, especially if you are an out-of-state student. However, the education that you are bound to receive is top-notch with great facilities and awesome ways to network. Also, NAU is one of the top schools in the nation in terms of bang for the buck with Residential Living costs in this difficult economy.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for Flagstaff's rapidly changing seasonal weather, and high elevation. If you are not used to high amounts of snow or cold climates as is the case with many in-state students, try to make sure you have warm clothing and the ability to handle both hot and cold climates. If you live in the valley, also be ready for a dramatic shift in elevation. It takes a few weeks to get used to breathing up there but when you finally do, you won't even notice a change. Also... Get involved! You will find that your college experience will be extremely rewarding if you decide to take part in NAU's many different extra- curricular activities. I can be honest and say that there truly is something for everyone.
Great for these types of students If you are of Native American descent or origin, consider coming to NAU. We have a unique and large population of Native American Students and a plethora of transitional, financial and academic resources available to those in need of them! If you are passionate about Music, NAU has an incredible program available to those interested in Performance, Education, or a Bachelor's in Fine Arts degree. You will receive a great deal of one-on-one attention and learn a great deal about your craft. Some of the best programs offered at NAU include but are not limited to: Hotel and Restaurant Management, Music Education, Music Performance, Nursing/Medical, Counseling, Therapy/Psychology, Mathematics, Engineering.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot If you are a high school student taking honors, AP, IB-type courses, I believe you can learn quite a bit here if you choose to take advantage of the honors college. I didn't do so and as a result, I feel very bored in most of my classes. The liberal studies requirements definitely feel excessive and if you were in a rigorous high school program, you will get very little out of your 100- and 200-level classes. As you might expect, most professors (and students) are quite liberal and conservative students often feel alienated. For the most part however, instructors respect differing opinions and will not mark you down for disagreeing with them.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and it's easy to see why it serves as such a huge draw for prospective students. Getting involved in social activities is the best way to meet people; many students, especially freshmen, can be antisocial. If you look for ways to get involved and meet like-minded people, you will be able to enjoy the experience much more than if you wait around for people to stop by and say hello.
Bang for the buck Currently, this is the cheapest of the three public universities in Arizona and in-state tuition is guaranteed to stay the same for four years once you enroll. The academics are pretty standard for a public university, so it's probably a reasonable investment.
Tips for prospective students If you can, talk to current or former students to get the tips and tricks you'll never hear from an admissions office or advisor. Furthermore, take everything that school officials tell you with a grain of salt; they tend to be rather melodramatic. Prepare yourself for the bureaucracy of it all and look into organizations and activities to supplement academics. If you decide to go here, spend some time off-campus in Flagstaff proper and definitely try Diablo Burger at least once!
Great for these types of students Anyone who is interested in being a teacher: the education program is very popular among students and well-respected by other professionals. Socialists will thrive here in and out of the classroom. People who love the outdoors, snow, and skiing or snowboarding will love it here, especially since there is a shuttle to Snowbowl from campus. Also, if you ride your bike or longboard everywhere, you will fit in perfectly at NAU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This school is just the right environment for any learning style. It’s just the right size not too big and not too small, just enough to have that hands on experience with your teacher and still be able to have a thriving environment of peers to interact with. Each professor has their own way of teaching and their own unique personality, which allows for great diversity and opportunities to grow as a student as well as a person. I can say without a doubt that because of this university’s unique and kooky professor’s that I have definitely learned a lot more than I ever would have without them. This can also be something that people struggle with though, for not everyone gets along with one another and certain personalities don’t mix, but if when it becomes a problem you can always switch into another class that fits you better, there is sure to be at least one that fits. I personally like the teachers that make me laugh and relate back to the topics that we are studying, it helps me to understand it better and be able to remember it better.
Am enjoying being here Well first let me tell you that I live in southern AZ and being able to get away from the hot dessert into the cool and beautiful pine woods of northern AZ is amazing. I enjoy being here the most though because it allows me to grow as a person and as student all at the same time. I’m away from my parents so it allows me to experience things on my own and learn how to deal with the real world of reality. I do think though that it’s important to be close enough to home so that I can visit but just far enough so that I can I can miss it and this school allows for that. I love Flagstaff like it were my home town, almost everything is in walking distance and the people are really lively and friendly.
Bang for the buck I don’t know about you but I do not have all the money in the world and am definitely not close to getting anywhere close to it anywhere soon so making sure I’m getting my money’s worth is probably the most important aspect of my college career. In my opinion NAU gives you your money’s worth and then some. Most professors here definitely give you your money’s worth with their skill as a teacher and intriguing personalities. The school’s resources are also well worth the buck with how accessible they are to students and how helpful they turn out to be. The most important part of NAU’s financial rewards though is there four year guarantee plan, basically the tuition you start out with when you first enroll is what you pay for all four years that you attend there, and in this economy that is a freaking awesome deal. In my experience I believe that this school gives you a $1.50 for every dollar you spend there, if not more.
Tips for prospective students If your thinking about going to this school, there are a few tips I can give to make the road a little less bumpy and hectic. First, the school’s student interactive systems such as LOUIE and VISTA are not the easiest to understand at first, matter of fact unless you have been exposed to them before you’ll probably be lost. The key here is to give it time and just play around with it and ease yourself into it after a while you’ll find it easier and easier to understand and you will also be able to do all that it is that you need to do. Second, the layout of the school is a little hard to get used to at first and it can seem a bit difficult to get around to everywhere that you need to be, especially if those places are at opposite end of the campus. The key thing to do here is to always carry a map for the first week or so that you always are aware of where you are and to also learn take great advantage of NAU’s bus system that runs through the entire campus (trust me it will help you a lot and allow you to be on time, embrace it). Lastly, college life is fun and exciting but it can start to affect your studies if you are not careful. The important thing to remember here is that your studies are important and they should be a priority, but it is also important to have fun and participate and have that is important so it is essential to try and find the right balance for you between the two to live a healthy life style.
Great for these types of students I don’t think NAU is limited to any one type of students. I have been here for a whole year and I can say that it is conducive for all of us. It doesn’t matter if you’re the straight A’s, teacher’s pet, goof ball, hippie, clown, show off, athletic, or the theatrical type, NAU has something that can fit for everyone. Don’t let your student ethic discourage you from applying, everyone seems to have a right fit here and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot If you did nothing in High School and succeeded, get ready for a shell shock. These teachers want to make sure that you know your stuff and you are ready for the real world. The work can be hard, but the prospects of it after the semester is over is worth it.
Am enjoying being here Personal issues aside, I love the atmosphere and I love the outdoors. There are so many places to hike, and even an hour away is one of the most beautiful places in Arizona -- Sedona!
Bang for the buck Unlike most colleges in the United States, NAU has a 4-year promise. Whatever you pay, for tuition, your first year, your tuition will never change. Other fees may vary.
Tips for prospective students Although this is a general statement, be open-minded and be up for almost anything. Also, don't wait until the last minute to cram for Finals. You will feel so pressured and overwhelmed, it is not funny. Make sure you go to office hours if you need help! I basically have to re-learn Calculus II because I neglected office hours and it's less than a week until the final.
Great for these types of students This school is great for people who want to have fun and major in any outdoors or technical field. NAU's Engineering program is on-par with ASU's Engineering program, reputably one of the best in the country. NAU also has the best Parks and Recreation Management program. Being so close to nature gives students opportunities to learn and grow. NAU's student population is laid back, but they work hard in the classroom.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There professors are great, and really make an effort to be available to you when you need them. Of course there is an occasional bad egg, but for the most part, everybody is great!
Am enjoying being here It is such an amazing environment up here, completely different from big city life. It's quiet and just really beautiful. The campus is not too spread out, so everything is in a perfect walking distance.
Bang for the buck With a four year locked tuition, you really can't go wrong!
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for snow! Don't come here expecting to slack off and never go to class, you will fail. There are attendance policies in place, and you do have to put in the work if you want the grades.
Great for these types of students Chill people who love to be outdoors.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Into my second semster of being a sophomore, I have taken quite a few different classes, and have learned a significant amount from each one. Each class teaches you new information so well that you don't struggle to remember material from previous semesters. Every class builds on one another as you continue on through your college career making it easier to transition from one class to the next. NAU allows you to get into your desired major classes from the very beginning!
Am enjoying being here I was born and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona and decided to continue my schooling at NAU because of what the city/college has to offer. I wanted to continue playing sports without having to play on a school team and there are plenty of opportunites to engage yourself in intramurals. I enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the winter; NAU even offers a Snowboarding coarse, as class credit! You will never find yourself without something to do, as long as your willing to branch out and meet new people!
Bang for the buck College costs more money than we would all like to pay. However, NAU is definitely worth it! The advantage of not having as many students as the other two universities in Arizona allows you to have a better learning environment in each class, with a closer relationship with your professor.
Tips for prospective students I definitely, highly recommend staying in the dorms for your first year of college. Having done so myself allowed me to meet all the friends I am still accompanied with today. It allowed me to know about every social gathering, every important date, and every school function that was going on. The one benefit that I gained from living in the dorms, was it helped me find a roommate that I choose to live with the following year.
Don't be afraid to try something new. It's one of the most repeated quotes you'll hear while deciding what college to attend but it really does make a difference. Engaging in activities you have never done before not only experience more with college, but gets your mind off of school for a little bit and doing this is important. In order to be successful you need to take breaks ever so often throughout a week of college, so your mind can take a rest of all the information your packing into it.Great for these types of students If you love the outdoors, and don't mind the snow from time to time, NAU is the right place for you! With all four seasons Flagstaff is one beautiful place each and every one.
GREAT for following majors:
Business
Nursing
Hotel and Restaurant Management
Dental Hygiene

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences beautiful and stunningly gorgeous. the winter's may be cold, but its worth it when there is fresh, untouched coat of snow laying on the ground outside your window. there is no place i would rather be in arizona.
Tips for prospective students work hard in high school and college feels no different. live on campus, its definitely worth the experience your freshman year!
Academic Rigor some of the teachers will challenge you to think like you never have, i have a few favorites i have already found. i have not came across a program that is unsatisfactory.
Dorm Life get to know the people in your hall and it will be ten times better! community bathrooms are not the greatest but they helps you learn how to respect others privacy.
Food and Dining there are a lot of options here at nau, but you start to get bored with them. dining dollars are a lot better than using transfers.
What to do for fun if you love the outdoors, you will always be busy! 10 minutes from a ski resort in the winter, 45 minutes from sedona, and two hours away from the grand canyon!! nothing better than the outdoors:)
Bang for the buck going to nau has been completely worth the money! i have met some of the nicest people!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus friday art walks that occur in downtown. its a must if you live in flagstaff to at least attend one. they happen the first friday of every month.
Great for these types of students the students who enjoy engaging with the professors and that need to be held accountable.
Clubs and Activities if there is anything that interests you, i guarantee that there is a club for it! from hot dog clubs to honor societies, there is definitely something for everyone!
Greek Life i am not directly involved in it, but they all live in the view together. the sororities and fraternities get involved in the community, but at the same time they have fun!
Campus Safety the blue light system is all over campus, which allows you to call the police and naupd if you see anything suspicious going on.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences nau is a school that has it's good and bad because they either have teachers that are really good or really bad, there is no median and too much construction all the time.
Tips for prospective students be prepared and stay on task of what your doing and don't be afraid to get help if you need it. some students need a tutor, college isn't easy like high school.
Dorm Life i feel that nau got kind of big too fast and in dorm life they try to put too many people in one dorm room.
Food and Dining the food on campus is good, but it is way to exspensive. you would think it would be cheaper due to the fact of everyone being college students
What to do for fun the fun things to do on campus are to go to the shows that are provided and events.
Bang for the buck the campus can feel rather money hungry because of how exspensive it is to be on campus, it's cheaper to live off campus and to eat off campus.
Campus Safety the campus safety is great because they have this blue light path, so if you ever feel unsafe or something happens you can go to the blue light and there is a phone to nau police and they will come help or escort you if needed.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a fabulous extended campus in Prescott Valley, Arizona. The class sizes are small. I feel like I matter at this college.
Tips for prospective students Do NOT fall behind in studies. Keep on task and study hard. The semsesters only last 10 weeks.
Academic Rigor This campus will challenge you and you will not be bored.
Dorm Life The dorms have not been built in Prescott Valley yet.
Food and Dining There are lots of places to eat in Prescott Valley. Even the connected public library offers some snacks and meals.
What to do for fun There are quite a few things to do in Prescott Valley, There are parks and trails to explore. There are movies and tons of places to hang out and eat. There is even a putt-putt golf place! Kohls is nearby.
Bang for the buck This extended campus is not near as expensive as other Universities. In fact is a steal!!!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is located near the hub of all activities and events.
Great for these types of students This is really a multi-faceted place. Tons to do and places to go.
Clubs and Activities Check out the Chamber of Commerce for clubs and such.
Campus Safety It shares the same parking lot as the library. Well lit parking. Wide open space around so as not to be ideal for someone to lurk about. The pollice station is just around the bend. Literally 500 feet or so.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot It's definitely no Ivy League and although the Nursing, Elementary Education, and Hotel & Restaurant Management are excellent here, every program outside of those are mediocre.
Did enjoy being here Flagstaff and NAU in particular have a very friendly and down-to-earth atmosphere. You get the occasional partiers and jocks, but most people are great. Although Flagstaff is beautiful, and it is, you should also consider that it is virtually in the middle of nowhere. The closest big city is Phoenix at 2 1/2 hrs away (if you speed).
Bang for the buck For a state university, NAU is very cheap in and out-of-state and consistently offers great financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Live in the dorms. Although there are definite downfalls of dorm life, such as shared bathrooms and the same food over and over, it is worth living in the dorms to make friends, find mentors on campus, and get connected to the Lumberjack community.
Great for these types of students Down-to-earth, outdoorsy, serious about their education, friendly, adventurous.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes here are absolutely wonderful. For the most part the teachers are always more then willing to lend a hand with any problem that may arise. Also, resources are always available if you fall behind in any class.
Am enjoying being here I love it here so far. The weather in Flagstaff is absolutely beautiful year round, there's always something to do around town. It's never a dull moment.
Bang for the buck Classes are just small enough that you can have individual time with your professor, and they get to know you personally.
Tips for prospective students Give the campus tour a go. If the beautiful views of the mountains, and the gorgeous weather don't pull you in. Then the awesome curriculum will.
Great for these types of students Students who are willing to learn, but also let loose every once in a while.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a photography major, and across the board there is a surprising amount of hands on opportunities for several majors. In communications there is a student run newspaper, t.v. station, and radio station (that's only one school at the university!). Also my professors and instructors are passionate about their craft, thus making learning it myself more enjoyable.
Am enjoying being here If you are like me, growing up in the land of two seasons (hot and hotter) the four seasons will be a nice change from what Phoenix has to offer weather wise. Flagstaff has a lot of natural beauty, and while some may say there is nothing to do in Flagstaff. I say to them there is, you just have to go find it for your self. Anyone who loves anything to do with the outdoors will love it here.
Bang for the buck Everything here (except maybe food prices) is cheaper than the other in state universities so if cost is one of your major factors, I would check NAU out.
Tips for prospective students The weather can get pretty crazy (we are talking tri-polar days here), also it can get pretty cold (coldest I've experienced was 5 degrees with -24 wind chill). Get involved with something (whether it be clubs or things like the student newspaper). Also explore around Flagstaff, there is a lot of things off campus that are worth seeing.
Great for these types of students Those who like the outdoors, those who can stand (or even enjoy) the cold, open minded people (we are a fairly liberal campus).

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I currently attend ASU, and even though it's a great school, it's just not for me. There are four campuses spread throughout the valley and my major requires me to take classes at two opposite locations, three hours from each other. Not only is it a hassle, but the class sizes are huge, 200+ people in a lecture hall isn't really my thing. At Northern Arizona University, I'm excited to have one-on-one opportunities with my professors and get the most benefit out of the learning material.
Will enjoy being here I love the location of this campus. Everything is in walking distance, literally. The school itself is gorgeous, and easy to navigate around. This is definitely a school for people who like outdoor activity such as hiking, off-roading, exploring, snowboarding, skiing, and many other things. The students I've met have all been friendly, and none have anything negative to say about the school.
Bang for the buck It's the cheapest university in Arizona, but I don't know why anyone would choose the other two over this one. I prefer the location, I like the woodsy area. It's just a small college town, what's better then that?
Tips for prospective students The only way you'll truly know whether you'll enjoy it or not is to visit the campus! It's the ultimate deciding factor.
Great for these types of students Outdoorsy types, small college seekers with not that many students, anyone looking for a good time!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot It's only freshman year, and I feel smart enough to graduate! The professors really want to make sure that you get an entirely new perspective on their subject. They're excited and passionate about what they teach, and want you to feel the same way.
Am enjoying being here Where do I even begin? The weather alone is amazing! You really do get all four seasons here, even though we're in Arizona! In addition, there are countless groups and clubs to join, and the freshman classes are getting bigger every year. This means that there are more people to meet!
Bang for the buck Though meal plans, parking spaces, and housing can get a little pricey, it's all for YOUR benefit. I found it a lot easier to learn the ropes of college when I had automatic meals I could use, and a place to stay on campus. I would also say that tuition is definitely reasonable- especially with all of the scholarship and financial aid opportunities available!
Great for these types of students If you're into nature and the outdoors, or love the small town feel, this college is for you!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Here the teachers are very helpful. I have recently had a class, that after the semester was through I was able to relate the information I learned to things I saw in my daily life. Overall I learned a lot. But it really depends on who your instructor is.
Am enjoying being here I'm finding that the location is very beautiful. but to me that's where it really ends. Sometimes you want something to do. If its snowing or pouring its hard to go out and do stuff. the first day of snow is great but everyday it gets so old.
Bang for the buck Its a really good priced school for Arizona and you get the college experience and not as big classes.
Tips for prospective students Some good tips would be bring warm clothes and be prepared for all types of weather as well as all types of students. Freshman year is always a little rough so make sure you involve yourself with activities.
Great for these types of students This school would be great for students who enjoy cold environments and not small classes but reasonably sized ones.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences NAU is a fantastic place to earn a bachelor's degree. The town is a beautiful escape from the hot cities of Southern Arizona and the people are warm and welcoming. The small campus environment and academic resources and support is where this University excels.
Tips for prospective students Aim to get involved your first year and begin setting goals right away. Take advantage of all of the wonderful programs set in place to help you succeed(SI sessions, in hall tutoring, free tutoring, walk in math lab, office hours,). Get to know Flagstaff off campus, especially the scenery. Hiking trails are literally 10 minutes away. If you love the outdoors, you can't go to a much better place to experience it!
Academic Rigor My courses have been challenging, but not impossible. As long as you keep up with the work and ask for help when you need it, you have a high chance of succeeding. I believe a professor has a lot to do with the course difficulty because of teaching style, experience, and emphasis. Make sure to research all of your possibilities and talk to other students for their opinions. ALWAYS choose a better professor with an inconvenient time over an average professor with a popular time. You will not be sorry.
Dorm Life I think the dorms at NAU are standard compared to other Universities. I did actually think the dorms in my hall were larger than average, but this varies by building. I was impressed by how much storage space I had as a freshman. They have remodeled all of the freshman dorms now so they are even more modern and space efficient. I overall had a great experience in the dorms. Staying on campus is great if you can get into the upperclassmen apartment complex with laundry machines, dishwashers, and private bedrooms. It is almost like living off campus, but you still have the convenience of being close to everything.
Food and Dining I do not have too many problems with the food at NAU. Most of the people who complain about the food do not know where to go to find variety. After spending two years here, you learn about places to eat and foods you have never heard about before. The all you can eat options always will have something balanced and healthy to choose from. The Green Scene is my personal favorite. It is a relatively unknown cafe and is located in the amazing new Recreation center.
What to do for fun If you are looking for nightlife and parties, NAU may not be the best place to go, but look no further if you appreciate adventure and recreation. It has been said that Flagstaff is located in one of the most geological diverse areas of Arizona. The Grand Canyon is just North of Flag. Even in Flagstaff you can experience a wide variety of activities including boating, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, camping, swimming, and more. If you appreciate culture and charm, head downtown and check out the shops and restaurants. There is nothing like it in Phoenix.
Bang for the buck I think NAU is a great value. They promise their students four years with the same price-something that no other Arizona school offers. I have received so much individual attention with my academics that I would not have been able to attain at ASU or U of A where I would just have been another number. One thing I will point out is that you have to be careful about how you spend your meal plans. Meal plans will obviously always be more expensive than cooking for yourself. I had one of the lowest meal plans my second year. I did not like how as a freshman they require you to sign up for the weekly meal plans. The block plans are a better value because you don't lose meals at the end of the week and can use them whenever you want.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It is thought that Morton Hall in addition to a few other places on North Campus are haunted.
The residence halls on North Campus host a Harry Potter Festival every year.
Great for these types of students NAU is great for students who are laid-back and want a more personalized college experience. If you are the type of student who likes to get to know your teachers this is a good place for you. If you put in an effort, there is no reason why your professors should not know you by name. There is a lot of social and environmental activism going on here, and the campus seems to attract a diverse group of people from many states.
Clubs and Activities NAU offers a variety of clubs and activities for students. Some common types of groups to get involved with are community service organizations, honor societies, career groups, religious clubs, and interest based clubs. Club sports are also available.
Greek Life I am not personally involved in Greek Life but I know from my friends involved that it is centered around Mountain View, the Greek residence hall. Sororities, fraternities, community service, and career groups are some of the different ways to be involved in Greek Life. I do not think Greek Life has a large presence on campus or is as influential as it is at ASU or U of A.
Campus Safety I have mostly felt safe on the campus, but a lot of this is just common sense for college students. It is nice how they have an escort service that will either walk with you or drive you to your destination at night if you cannot find a friend to walk with. I have heard of some sketchy people being caught in the dorms, but again the freshmen who left their doors open or let them in were probably not being very smart in the first place. Also, the lighting could be improved on campus at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The campus and surrounding area is extremely beautiful and diverse, however construction is continually happening on school grounds year round. NAU offers a multitude of activities for students to become involve in outside of the classroom such as; student government, Greek Life, inter-mural sports, and many other student run clubs. Teachers are easily accessible and want to see you succeed, all you need to go is talk to, and visit them during their office hours.
Tips for prospective students To become a successful student at NAU, make sure to become involve in the many clubs and activities that the school offers, it'll help make Flagstaff feel like home and you'll be able to meet, and make many new friends.
Academic Rigor The rigor all depends on what teacher you have, some are easier then others, but all classes are passable if you work hard in them.
Dorm Life At times, living in the dorms can be distracting, but RHA offers tons of place for students to study in peace. I highly recommend staying in the dorms the first two years at NAU to allow to make, and keep connections to campus life, because once you live off campus, you begin to distance yourself.
Food and Dining NAU offers many different dinning venues for students catering to all taste.
Greek Life NAU has a spectacular Greek Life which I'm proud to be part of; they have both social and academic Greek Lettered organizations. Greeks have the highest retention rate for NAU students, and each year donate countless hours and money to various local and national philanthropic organizations.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Simply the best University in Arizona with the best weather and professors. Proud to be a Lumberjack and have my college experience here. 5/5 with diversity and student success programs!
Tips for prospective students If learning is your passion and you want to have fun doing it, then NAU is the school for you!
Academic Rigor Professors show passion for what they teach, they will work with you to earn the grade you want. If you are determined getting an A in the class might be easier than you thought. Challenging but very easy to understand.
Dorm Life Very nice rooms, many choices to get acquainted. Students are for the most part very nice and will invite you in their rooms.
Food and Dining five stars! they have an all you can eat Hot Spot and many restaurants in a specified area. They offer a good variety of choices of meals and are very accurate in their food. They have some chefs working.
What to do for fun In winter it snows a lot, snowball is not to far from campus, so most students take their snowboards and go snowboarding. There is a fancy gym with rock climbing and indoor soccer. There are many fields around campus to hang out or kick a ball around. Not to mention basketball courts and sand volley ball.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The school has a terrific campus and they do their best to maintain it looking the best they can. For the most part teachers are extremely helpful, as long as they see you putting in the effort in their classes. Overall a university that works efficiently.
Tips for prospective students If accepted find out who your adviser is and have them check your credits and class schedule every semester.
Academic Rigor Classes here are not really different than any other place, if you put in the effort you will do fine. They can be challenging, but its easy to find and/or make a study group to prepare for them or even to get on on one time with a teacher.
Food and Dining Food is delicious but my biggest complaint is that you don't always get what you pay for when it comes to transfers. At NAU you pay $8 per transfer, but when you use the transfer at most places you get a deal that only really costs $5 or $6 at the most. If you use transfers to eat all the time it's a huge loss.
What to do for fun Health and Learning Center has a lot of fun events, events are always happening around campus, and a person can easily walk to downtown to see what is going on there.
Bang for the buck Pretty decently priced, unless you're looking at summer school. Plus by enrolling you are put on their pledge program, which keeps your tuition locked in for 8 semesters. The pledge plan however is only for undergraduates.
Campus Safety Avoid the woods area at night, other than that it is a pretty safe campus.

Professors and advisers are always willing to help with any academic issues or questions. Also, all the clubs and organizations make it easy to get connected with not only other students, but people within the Flagstaff community making this school one of the greatest to attend.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students I would advise getting involved quickly. Also, take advantage of all the tutoring opportunities the university offers.
Academic Rigor The classes range from small and intimate to very large lecture classes. There is tutoring for almost every subject within dorms and on campus. Lesson plans are always well prepared and
Dorm Life Dorm life at Northern Arizona University is fun and educational. Each hall had an R.A. that organizes various activities for student bonding. Each dorm has tutoring opportunities, study rooms, computer rooms, and the environment is a place to feel safe while learning and making new friends.
Food and Dining On and off campus dining for students is always easy access and satisfying. There is a variety of restaurants and cafeteria's to satisfy any craving. Meal plans that the school provides makes food and dining convenient and affordable.
What to do for fun The Flagstaff campus is located in the Mountains so their is always something fun to do including: hiking on trails, biking, camping, and walking through local shops and events downtown. During the winter Flagstaff gets plenty of snow so snowboarding and sledding are popular activities. No matter what the interest is, there is always an activity to go along at Northern Arizona University.
Clubs and Activities There is an extremely large range of clubs and organizations for students of all different backgrounds and interests. Also, if there is not already a club that a student would want to join, one has the opportunity to create one.
Campus Safety Police officers and security guards are continuously patrolling around the campus. Plus there are emergency blue light stations located across the university for help with any disagreeable situations.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences NAU is for lumberjacks. They are quick to help their extended campus students. And the got the lowest rates in the valley.
Tips for prospective students Apply online and don't look back. If they have the major you are looking for go with them.
Academic Rigor I haven't had a class yet. I'm sure it is worthy of a lumberjack. So it must be great.
Dorm Life I'm planning to take all my classes online. I also plan to live a good two hour drive away from the dorms. This I will never know.
Food and Dining All the students like food and dinning. They are lumberjack you know. What kind of lumberjack doesn't like food.
What to do for fun Log rolling, Barn raising, Head up to slide rock.
Bang for the buck Yes, the best price in the valley.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Well their mascot is a lumberjack. That's unusual. And they have T'shirt with him on campus
Great for these types of students Students who want to go to class. Be within driving distance of any season of weather. Don't mind a lumberjack
Clubs and Activities This is the place where if they don't have the club you are looking for, you can make your own. He-man woman haters club is my favorite.
Greek Life There are plenty of students who watch Greek every week. Grab a couch cushion and BYO soda.
Campus Safety I haven't herd of anyone running with scissors here. And people aren't allowed to sell flags without permission.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences NAU has an exciting location, but seems to care more about their cash flow and interesting new prospective students rather than keeping their cost down. There is constant construction on the Campus, but Flagstaff overall is wonderful.
Tips for prospective students Great place, if you lik the outdoors. Enroll here, but understand that there will be construction everywhere.
What to do for fun Outdoors, or movies. If you're 21, plenty of fun local bars.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I love going to school here. The small(ish)-town community is great and I love the atmosphere up here. While I haven't enjoyed all of my classes, it is a great place for many majors.
Tips for prospective students Living on campus is a great choice, since it is easier to hang out with friends or meet with study groups. Try buying books online instead of through the bookstore (it will save you money). And be prepared for all sorts of weather! If you can imagine it, it can happen here... all in one day.
Academic Rigor Lower-level classes are often taught by professors who don't know how to teach. Don't be turned off by this - keep going and you will get to the better professors who really care about what they are doing. Overall, classes have a manageable amount of homework.
Dorm Life This is my third year living in on-campus housing. There are many different options and you get better choices the longer you stay on campus (since we are designed that way - you don't typically move off campus quickly). RAs are for the most part willing to work with you for roommate challenges.
Food and Dining There are a lot of great options here, but I don't use much besides Starbucks and the library cafe after my freshman year. You can definitely live soley on what is provided on campus, however the are struggling a little bit to provide more healthy options. (You can get fruits/veggies, but there is still a lot of processed foods.)
What to do for fun When it snows, sledding and snowball fights are a blast! If not, NAU hosts Afterhours (free magicians, comedians, etc.). You can also go to movies on the weekends for $3 or go hiking or wander downtown.
Bang for the buck NAU has a fixed-rate tuition. I am paying the same tuition this year (my junior) year that I paid my freshman year. You are going to get the same education you would get at larger colleges without having to worry about tuition going up.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Instead of a normal football field, we have a skydome - a giant dome with a field inside. That way, we can play our sports without having to worry about snow!
Great for these types of students This place is great especially for education majors, hotel and restaraunt management majors, nursing majors and forestry majors. We have plenty of other fantastic degrees as well.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of great clubs on campus. If you're religious, passionate about the environment, love sports, etc., there is something for you.
Greek Life Greek life does exist here, but it isn't a must-do, and you can get along fine without joining one. We also have a lot of community-service greek organizations that don't follow your typical party idea of greek life.
Campus Safety Unless you're walking from north to south campus by yourself at night, you should be fine. There are always plenty of people walking around campus (even later at night), so you are rarely alone. We have very very low crime rates compared to other college campuses. (Still use common sense though!)

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Northern Arizona University is a university with unique majors such as Forestry and Hotel and Restaurant Management. This is a place where the professors are just as diverse as the student and everyone has a common goal - to educate and be educated.
Tips for prospective students Keep a planner! If you have five minutes to start an assignment, take every second you can. Before you know it, the assignment is due next class and you haven't started yet. Also, get to know your professors. At the very least don't be afraid to go up and say hello or shoot them an email. While they might seem uninterested, I have never had a bad experience. They do enjoy talking to their students and are there to help you out whenever possible. They are not scary, I promise!!
Academic Rigor As laid back as the faculty is, they are not as laid back with their studies. While most I have encountered have been fairly lenient, I've had a fair share of sticklers. Stay on top of your studies and don't be afraid to participate in class. Showing up helps everyone involved.
Dorm Life I only lived for a year on campus in a fairly new dorm. This dorm was Aspen Crossing and at the time it was an Honors dorm with 24 hour quiet hours. It was wonderful. Get to know your roommate/suitemates so there are no altercations in the future. They can get very awkward. Lay out everything in the roommate agreements and don't be afraid to talk to your Resident Assistant if issues ever come up(which they more than likely will).
Food and Dining There are a plethora of dining opportunities available on campus with more than one buffet. The meal plans are manageable and pretty affordable. I stuck with 14 meals a week and $250 dining dollars/ semester and I lasted just fine. There are the mainstream venues such as Einstein's, Jamba Juice and Starbucks but there are NAU only places as well that are just as tasty.
What to do for fun FLAGSTAFF IS WONDERFUL. I'm from Phoenix, a pretty big city, so Flagstaff gave me the small town feel that I had been looking for. Unless you are over 21 the bar life won't be happening for you, but there is a lot of wilderness to explore with friends and a whole downtown to have fun in. There is a movie theatre right by campus to catch all the latest movies, there are the San Francisco Peaks to go snowboarding or skiing on during the winter months. Meteor Crater is about 45 minutes away and very cool to check out. Bunhuggers is the popular burger joint of Flagstaff - definitely go there at least once!!
Bang for the buck The movie theatre up there - one of the Harkins Theatres chain - is pretty affordable for students, less than $7.00. There is a Bookman's and a Target right next to campus for your budgetary needs. Current movies get played on campus for a couple of dollars, too. Buffalo Wild Wings has their discounts on Thursdays for Boneless Wings (delicious!!).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an annual Undie Run during the winter months. Literally students run in the underwear across campus at night in the snow. There is tequila sunrise during homecoming week for those of you over 21 - drinking at 6am? Not my cup of tea, personally but I know those who had a blast.
Clubs and Activities There are SO many clubs and if there isn't one that tickles your fancy - CREATE IT! There is an LGQBT group on campus, there are religious affiliated organizations, I even heard of someone starting up Quidditch! There are plenty of intramurals as well.
Greek Life Greek Life is fairly dominant and they have their own dorms further off campus, but I was never apart of that.
Campus Safety There are security patrolling, campus police patrolling, and if you ever find yourself at night (or even during the day) being followed or uncomfortable, there are yellow poles with blue lights and phones on them that you push buttons on to receive emergency service. If you are on the run, there are ones always around so just keep running to the next one and they can actually find you from that path.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The advisers and professors at NAU really take time aside to help you. It is a school that is continuing to grow bigger and greener. One of the best things is smaller the class sizes where the professor actually knows your name!
Tips for prospective students If you're afraid of not fitting in, there are over 20 different sororities and fraternities, and over 200 different clubs. Everyone is bound to find their in at this university.
Academic Rigor As a student majoring under the biology department, classes can become pretty hard but all my professors have office hours where I can go in and go over the topics I didn't quite grasp.
Dorm Life The dorms are awesome. As a freshman, the resident assistants create so many opportunities where you can meet new people, and they are carefully selected among hundreds of applicants. They are great listeners whenever you need someone to talk to. As for upperclassmen, there are many different dorms with different living styles, such as apartment-style, condo-style, and suite-style. The bus route makes it easy to get from your dorm to your class.
Food and Dining The dining services try their best to accommodate the college student lifestyles, having Starbucks and Denny's open until 1am, and 2 other dining places open until 2am. There is a very wide variety of choices, including asian food, mexican food, a Pasta Works, a sub sandwich place, Pizza Hut, Einstein's bagel place, Jamba Juice, Chick-Fil-A, and 2 all-you-care-to-eat places. In one of the all-you-care-to-eat places they offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
What to do for fun If you're looking for something on campus, the Health and Learning Center, the gym/recreation center, is new this year and it includes a rock wall, raquetball courts, and there are over 30 different group classes offered every month, including yoga, hardcore abs, step and sculpt, and even Zumba!
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 clubs, everyone's bound to find something they like.
Greek Life We have over 20 different sororities and fraternities.
Campus Safety There are these blue light booths where if you are walking you can press the button and will be directly connected to the NAU police department on campus. Also there is an escort service, all you do is call the number and they come to you and escort you to wherever you need to go.

Incoming freshmen live in a Freshman Connections hall designed to help meet other students and help with the beginnings of college life providing computer labs, peer tutoring, and time management and test-taking skill courses. Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Northern Arizona University has many good options for majors and is a wonderful starting point for graduate school. There are several opportunities for advancing your career goals as well as extra-curricular opportunities. Overall, it is a good school with excellent professors and major advisers.
Tips for prospective students First of all, ALWAYS shop around for the cheapest price on books, and don't trust spiral bound books because many are reprinted from hard copies that are cheaper. Second, don't believe everything the gateway advising center tells you; they often have you take classes you don't need that will just keep you there longer and cost more. Last of all, have fun; and I don't mean go out and get drunk or sleep around every chance you get. I mean that you should not stress to the point of emotional breakdown because you might fail a test. It's just one test. You'll get over it. Even if it brings your grade down in your class, it isn't worth weeks (or even hours) of trauma or depression. You can't let it completely consume your life. Being studious is important, but balance is important as well. You need to make sure that you get enough time with family, friends, and with yourself as well as doing your school work; so set aside time for study, but also for hanging out with friends, working out, exploring the town, meeting new people, and calling back home. Remember, you can retake a class, but you can't reclaim lost time.
Academic Rigor Depending on the major, the classes can be quite challenging. A balance of hard and easier classes works best to keep GPA up but still progress. This also depends on the student's study habits and desire to learn.
Dorm Life This depends entirely on the dorm and the life desired. There are good, quiet dorms that work for study, but others are loud and full of life. The public areas are clean and the staff is typically willing to help.
Food and Dining The food provided on campus is sadly lacking as far as taste is concerned, as well as being overpriced. There are a few on campus options that are provided by outside venders that are good and not
too terribly expensive. There are also several good restaurants within easy walking distance of all parts of campus. What to do for fun The downtown area is just a ten minute walk from campus. Downtown there are neat little shops (typical of any Arizona town), sports stores, restaurants, bars, a pool hall, a public library, and grassy park. There is also skiing and snowboarding seasonally as well as some amazing hikes and mountain bike rides. There is an extensive urban trail system that starts on campus and gives the impression that it isn't within the town. Sedona is just a 45 minute drive away. The red rocks and oak creek are among the most beautiful sights in the USA. I believe it rivals the Grand Canyon (which is also only a 3 hour drive from campus).
Bang for the buck Again, this depends entirely on what major is chosen and the attitude taken toward the education. The science majors, business majors, and merchandising majors are all very good. The English majors and other liberal arts are, from my experience, somewhat lacking. So many classes have been cut from the languages and other liberal arts that it doesn't offer as much for students. The art department can fantastic. The ceramics studio brings students and artist from around the world, particularly Japan. The sculpture classes are very practical for aspiring artist because the instructors teach the students to succeed independently of the school. The music department gives some wonderful opportunities as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The university is bordered by three cemeteries. These are actually quite nice for afternoon walks, since it is quiet there and few people bother you. There are also underground tunnels that span the entire length of the campus. These are off limits since the walls contain asbestos. It is rumored that trespassing there qualifies one for automatic expulsion.
Great for these types of students It is a great college for students who enjoy the outdoors and smaller towns. Bigger city people who want a good mall and easy access to shopping will be sorely disappointed. It is also good for students who earnestly seek a quality education. The instructors are almost always to help a student that is willing to make an effort.
Clubs and Activities There are literally hundreds of clubs and activities on campus. There are clubs related to just about every single major on campus, as well as extra-curricular clubs such as archery, Quidditch (from Harry Potter), Judo, Wu Shu, Christian/Catholic, Neo-Pagan, and hiking.
Greek Life I have no experience in this area, but I know that there is a large part of campus devoted to Greek life and quite a few people involved. Everyone I have heard speak of it, speaks of it highly. No one has said anything negative about the Greek life on campus that I have been privy to.
Campus Safety It is a very safe campus. There are what we call blue lights that have emergency phones on the posts so that, if a student feels frightened, he or she can simply call campus security and get help. Campus police officers patrol regularly. Officers or campus security are always willing to walk students home after dark if the student feels unsafe. Like any campus, though, there is some crime. Some paths on campus are not lit, but there are always alternate paths that will get you to the same place. A person will be as safe as they allow themselves to be; the resources are there, they just have to use to them.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The location and size of NAU makes it most appealing and conducive to a prosperous experience, both off on and off campus. It is set in Northern Arizona with beautiful landscaping and a breathtaking mountain setting. The classes are reasonable in size and the instructors make learning a meaningful experience.
Tips for prospective students The best advice I can give as a Sophomore at NAU, is to become involved and active with your fellow students. There are so many opportunites both educational as well as intramural to be involved with at NAU. Learning experiences are most enhanced when shared by students. There are working related opportunities both available on campus as well as off campus, and the numerous college departments provide assistance on an ongoing basis. There are many counselors available to help students achieve their educational goal(s). The Financial Aid office can assist each student with tuition, housing costs and fees and help direct parents and students to financial aid resources. The key factor is to start early and research sites for scholarships, i.e. Cappex, Upromise and Fastweb.
The numerous fields of study are endless at NAU, so that every student's field of interest can be met.
The variety of weather can be both invigoratiing and unexpecting at times, so come prepared with winter dresswear and accessories suitable for cold, wind, snow or rain. If bringing a car ask your parents about AAA, in case of need for repairs or maintenance, especially if your parents live out of state. There are several reputable car repair shops designated by AAA in the area.
The closest and most popular store near campus, is Target which provides many daily living provisions and supplies. Depending on where you live on campus it can be in walking distance.Academic Rigor The variety of fields of study are endless, some uncommon, such as forestry and hotel management. There are numerous colleges in specialty areas, such as Nursing, Behavioral Sciences, Criminal Justice, Education, Business, Economics and so forth. Brochures and information are available on site and by contacting NAU.
Dorm Life There is definitely an advantage to start at NAU living on campus - especially a dorm. It provides opportunities to become closer to othere students and understand NAU's mission and goals of education. The dorms vary, so depending on which one you are assigned to, the size and style will vary. They are well maintained and have resident aides to help direct each student. I live off campus in an apartment now, and as a Sophomore find it easier for studying and provides some other opportunities for a lifestyle more appeasing as an individual, there are many off and on campus living settings that can be shared or live alone, if preferred. The key factor regarding both types of living arrangements, is to be proactive and establish residency sooner, then later. The closer to the University living arrangements go quickly.
Food and Dining There is a well balanced variety of food available on campus, both in the Union, as well as various locations throughout the University. Special dietary restrictions/needs are available upon request. Off campus, there are numerous restaurants that cater to the University population, and some provide discounts to students. Some are in driving distance, others are in walking distance. There is bus service available to nearby restaurants and frequently visited entertainment locations.
What to do for fun NAU is surrounded by mountains and beautiful landscaping. Since Flagstaff is located at 5,000 ft elevation, there is a variety of seasons from Spring to delightful snow winters. There is a variety of venues which provide musical and theatrical entertainment on campus, as well as off campus. There is a ski lift (Snow bowl), located approximately 15 minutes from campus that provides skiing, sledding, and snowboarding during the winter months. There are numerous hiking paths surrounding the University, as well as glorious sites for camping and site seeing. There are several locations in driving distance, such as Sedona that provide breathtaking views. Central Phoenix is approximately 2 and 1/2 hours by car, and has the endless provisions of a growing city.
Bang for the buck I have followed my older sister who is an alumni of NAU and find NAU a rewarding experience.I love the class sizes, they aren't so big that they are overwhelming and provide a more personal learning experience. I am fortunate to have some good friends to share an apartment this year and have appreciated the dorm experience as well as a freshman. The class schedules are vast, accommodating each student with opportunities in their field of study. The location is a main attraction, as well as the size of students in each class. I feel this has been an advantage in my learning experiences or the past two years. The location is filled with endless beauty and another factor in choosing NAU for me. Many students bring their bikes to ride on campus and attend classes, as well as for entertainment. The newly designed wellness center has a wide range of exercise equipment and classes, as well as a pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and track and field.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus NAU's Mascot is the 'Lumberjack,' and has been in the forefront of the community since NAU's opening. There are parent-teacher events each year and opening houses which provide helpful information for the students and parents as they progress forward in their education.
Sporting events are continuous throughout the year bringing school spirit to a major height. Many of the colleges' within NAU, have yearly events, ranging from fashion shows to theatrical presentations, provided and coordinated by the students with instructor advisement.
Some specific events include Family Weekend, Homecoming, Earth Day, Student Athlete Communities Day, Gabapalooza Day (outdoor party on lawn of Gabapalooza Residence Hall), Mr Lumberjack Pageant,
Cultural Traditions Event (Native American, Asian and Hispanic populations),Taylor Haunted House, Holiday Week and Greek Week to name a few.Great for these types of students Student services offer a wide range of assistance to help students achieve their goals and learning experiences while at NAU. Their is counseling services available to each student. The instructors demonstrate a true passion for teaching while helping students develop and enhance their learning skills.
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 clubs, fraternities and sororities on campus. There are benefits and services committed to our veterans and military students. There are health services available on campus and Flagstaff Regional Medical Hospital, as well as a reliable urgent care center in close proximity to the University. There is a bookstore well stocked on campus with many textbooks and most supplies a student will need. There are several community oriented activities, both civic and faith oriented, available to students.
Greek Life There are sororities and fraternities representing an active Greek Life on campus. Greek life at Northern Arizona University is very popular with students. Greek Life involvement can provide some opportunities and advantages while attending NAU, as well as after graduation, such as networking for employment opportunities.
Campus Safety The campus is well lit, and security is available 24/7. Each student is provided with education on campus safety and measures to take to avoid putting themselves in a precarious situation, with workshops available. There is a very low incident of any crimes since attending, the most common known is theft, usually of bikes, which campus safety reinforces the need for a secure bike lock at all times be used - this has helped bring down the theft rate.

What to do for fun NAU is in the city of Flagstaff, AZ. There is a lot to do here like, snowboard, hike, sled, movies, clubs, bars, restaurants, shopping, and whatever else you can think of. It is a very outdoorsy place.
Bang for the buck I am out of state and they offer WUE to western students and it only makes tuition $2,000 higher than in-state. It can seem pricy, but it is well worth it.
Great for these types of students If you love to be outdoors and like to snowboard or hike, this is a great place for you.
Clubs and Activities There are over 120 clubs at NAU, everyone can find something they are interested in.
Campus Safety The campus is pretty safe and it has a lot of safety features.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Northern Arizona University is located in the ideal college town with a relaxed but very active demeanor. The coursework is collectively challenging yet easier to understand with individual attention from professors. The university promotes diversity, hard work ethic, social networking and creativity all within the confines of a gorgeous campus!
Tips for prospective students Northern Arizona University is a unique campus with an innovative environment. I encourage students to take advantage of its size and get involved! It is big enough to accomodate a variety or organizations, clubs and sports for every student. However, it is small enough to personally get to know one's professor to ensure academic success.
Academic Rigor Although the university may be on the smaller scale to some, that is not an indication of an easy course load. With individual attention, most professors encourage students to come to their office hours to receive information specifically not presented in class to get to know them. Coursework is designed to challenge students, encourage creativity and provide real world experience.
Dorm Life Although technically labeled residence halls, for their lack of dining options in the buildings, living in these communities is a great way to get involved on campus! There are specific hall activities planned and information provided about events going on through the university. Each resident assisted is carefully chosen for the position to be a resource for the student. Most halls are centrally located in the middle of the grounds except one on the south of campus.
Food and Dining NAU has a unique dining setup. There are two main university unions, one on north campus and one on south, that provide a variety of cuisines. One could find deli sandwiches, Mexican food, Italian and burgers all in one place!
What to do for fun The university is located in an ideal mountain town! Rock climbing, hiking, running, Frisbee and many other outdoor activities are always accessible in nice weather. In the snow, skiing and snowboarding are only a thirty minute drive from campus. Downtown Flagstaff is always buzzing with live music, great food, town square movies, and great places to eat! Flagstaff is also only an hour and a half from the gorgeous Grand Canyon!
Bang for the buck Northern Arizona University provides an amazing education and spectacular environment for one's money! The tuition cost compared to other large universities is significantly lower. NAU is a great example of getting an exceptional college experience without putting their students in an insane amount of debt with college loans. The university is included in the WUE and has a variety of scholarships and financial aid available.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year during football season they hold the running of the freshman. All new students are brought down to the field to help lead the football team out. The Lumberjacks play in an indoor stadium called The Dome! The Greek System marches through campus chanting on the day they receive new members! Homecoming week is a huge celebration with tons of activities and events. Welcome week is also a big event for new students!
Great for these types of students NAU is home to a multitude of personalities. It is especially ideal to those interested in physical therapy, health care, teaching and the business field. All programs have great advisors to help a student graduate in four years! The professors use a variety of teaching methods that require active participation and an open mind. This university is especially great for those students who want to be challenged both intellectually and personally to develop a solid start into the real world.
Clubs and Activities NAU has clubs and organizations ranging from student senate to quidditch! There are so many ways to get involved on campus and find the group of people that share your interests.
Greek Life The Greek Life system is unlike any other Greek community at other universities. All sororities and most fraternities live in wings under one rough in Mountain View residence hall. The members all work together to raise money for their designated charities. The system has an honors society for members with great grades. The community held an anti-hazing week in which hazing and alcohol education and awareness was presented to the campus.
Campus Safety At any point on campus one can find a safety blue light with a call box to reach NAUPD. If a student studying at the library does not feel comfortable walking home in the dark, they can call campus security and request someone to walk them home. They will send two or more members of the security team to escort the student home. Every year NAU holds the annual safety walk to ensure each blue light on campus is working properly. It is a very safe environment in which students can comfortably live and explore the grounds.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Northern Arizona University is a great environment in terms of both the classes and the social aspect. So far, all experiences I have had with teachers have been very positive; they were all very knowledgeable and willing to help out wherever necessary. Even though there are approximately 16,000 undergrad students on campus, it has the feeling of a smaller private college.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus and get a feel for what it's like. Not necessarily on one of the tours -- if you know someone who goes to NAU, visit them for a weekend. I did that and it really helped me get a feel for NAU and made me realize that it would be the perfect campus for me. Send in your SAT scores, because that is what they base scholarships off of.
Academic Rigor It really depends on the class and the professor. For some classes, I had to read a lot (~200 pages a week per class), for others it was a short chapter every week. for one class, my only outside of class work was a term paper. Be prepared for a lot of writing in any class that isn't math- or science-based.
Dorm Life The Freshman Connection Halls are really nice, in my opinion. My dorm (Wilson) was recently renovated and got all new furniture which allows for a lot of storage. While it varies from year to year, people seem to be very friendly, leaving their dorms open or posting invitations on Facebook to come to their room to watch a movie or play a game. The dorms also have Learning Communities to help you connect with others with your major or similar interests. Overall, I do not regret living in a dorm my Freshman year because it allowed me to meet a lot of new people.
Food and Dining I really enjoy the way the food services works on campus. There are two All You Care To Eat Locations on Campus, which have a lot of choices, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and generally healthy. The same goes for other locations around campus -- if you're vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, you can expect to have a lot of choices available to you. There are places to get burritos, subs, smoothies, Einstein's, Starbucks, Asian food, pizza, salads, Chik-Fil-A, and more on top of that. Each of these places has a transfer where you can get food and a drink for one of your meals. I recommend the 10 meal plan because you also get $350 dining dollars, which can be spent on food anywhere on campus as well.
What to do for fun There is a LOT to do on- and off-campus for fun. Just walking around campus you can learn how to slack-line (kind of like a tight-rope), rock climb, play games in the quad, play quidditch (seriously: check out the NAU Narwhals, who are currently ranked 19th in the world. I'm not joking.), and more. Downtown is within walking distance (or there is a bus, as well) and it's always fun to go explore there and check out the shops.
You could also go and watch the rugby club play or play ultimate frisbee with some friends.Bang for the buck Obviously this depends on your situation with scholarships, loans, etc, but I feel that I am getting what I pay for with each class that I take. Even if I don't remember every detail that I learned in class, I honed my writing skills and critical analysis skills a bit more.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The French Fries - a sculpture on South Campus that looks like french fries or noodles.
Great for these types of students Great for adventurous and/or outdoorsy types. There is a party scene, but it's not the biggest party school in Arizona by any means.
Clubs and Activities NAU has over 200 clubs and organizations to join, as well as intramural sports. From rugby to quidditch to Swing Dancing to political organizations, there is no shortage of clubs to be involved in.
Greek Life I'll give Greek Life a 3 because I am not involved but it appears to me that Greek Life is very active on campus and definitely worth looking into if you're interested in a sorority or fraternity. Instead of having houses, each Sorority/Fraternity has a wing in the Mountain View Hall.
Campus Safety I personally always feel safe when I am walking around campus alone. They have what is called NAU Alert which will alert you of any weather advisories (classes being cancelled due to snow) as well as any safety issues arising on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The school environment is fantastic and the professors are helpful. Most of the time you just need to email them or go to their office hours and they'll be more than happy to help you. Also, the campus is beautiful year 'round, whether it's snowing or not.
Tips for prospective students Keep track of everything on LOUIE. If you see a problem with anything, make sure you call or go into the correct office right away.
Academic Rigor How difficult the classes are and how much homework you get really depends on your major. I am an English Education major and I don't have all that much homework. However, I have friends who are Computer Science majors and they constantly have homework.
Dorm Life I have only ever lived in 24 hour quiet halls. As I am not much of a partier, they are perfect for me. Even though it is a 24 hour quiet, there is still a sense of community and they aren't too strict with it. During daytime hours if you are a little loud in the hallway, the Residence Assistants tend to not write you up.
Food and Dining The food isn't the best, but that may be because I'm used to it. I would much rather cook or eat out, and I do so when I can.
What to do for fun There's a few different things that you can do. The Grand Canyon isn't that far away if you want to go for a quick visit. Also, there's snow boarding and skiing. If you're not into that, there are a few dancing clubs around town and at Granny's Closet they have karaoke on Friday nights. There's also swing dancing at Galaxy diner on Saturdays.
Bang for the buck I feel like I am getting a quality education. The books are a bit expensive, but they are at any college.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is surrounded by 2 graveyards. Also, the homecoming parade goes through the town of Flagstaff rather than around campus like most college parades do.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and activities around campus. Each dorm has a student council and there are many clubs that you wouldn't have even thought of. If there is a club you want that they don't have you can always start the club.
Campus Safety If you are walking around somewhere at night, you can call campus police to give you a police escort. I have done this multiple times. They are very nice and friendly every time and also make you feel safe rather than scared walking around late at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Northern Arizona University is a college for those who love the outdoors, love to be in a small college town, and to be in a student town. The town itself is small and student focused, and even the university is small itself. The professors personally love to get to know the students and are always willing to help. The only bad part about this school is the college food in the University Union and the Dub.
Tips for prospective students One piece of advice I would love to give to future students is get to know your professors, they know when you are missing class and they actually care if you are or not, in other words expect a call or email from them if you ditch class. The second piece of advice I would like to give for future students is that if you eat on campus it is more expensive, so I would recommend not eating on campus, but buying your own food, trust me your wallet and your student loans will thank you.
Academic Rigor Northern Arizona University is not a very hard academic school, just go to class and you will pass the class.
Dorm Life The dorm life is honestly really fun to be in because you get to know the people in the freshman halls, but not so much in the upper class dorms. I recommend living in the dorms the freshman year because the dorms are more centered around the students.
Food and Dining The food here at this school is honestly not that great. The only places that are really worth eating in the Student Union are Starbucks and Einsteins. Mein Bowl and Cobrizos have given students food poising.
The only good places to eat in the Dub Center are: Einsteins and the Peaks Grill. What to do for fun What to do for fun around Flagstaff is Ice Skating, parks to walk in, Snowbowl, and even First Friday, which is a art show that is famous for their arts adn crafts.
Bang for the buck NAU really isnt worth going for unless you like a quiet town and there is nothing really to do other then going out to party at night.
Campus Safety The campus safety is honestly pretty good because there are campus safety aides that will be at a certain location in half an hour to pick you up and make sure that you safely get back to the dorm or wherever you are going.

Categories Rating Comments Bang for the buck It would be cheaper if I were an in-state student, but the Western Undergraduate Exchange program has provided me with a wonderful alternative for paying out-of-state tuition.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the smaller class size- get to know your teachers and let them know that you are hardworking and engaged in your learning. Also, get involved outside of the classroom. Intramurals, greek life, and clubs are all great opportunities to increase your social networks.
Great for these types of students It's great for kids who want to attend a bigger school, but still have the opportunity to have smaller classes. Also, it's great for students who love the outdoors, and snow!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am very impressed with the professors in the math and history department. The professors I have had in general, try to learn students names and help students when needed. The majority of classes I've had are not too challenging.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere at NAU is very laid back. People dress however they want. NAU can get boring on weekends because the only event offered is casino night in the union. You have to find your own fun on the weekends. I really like the forest terrain that surrounds the campus.
Bang for the buck I'd suggest if you want to save money, it is cheaper not having a meal plan. However, if you live on campus, having a meal plan is more convenient. I've heard that it's cheaper to live off campus than in a dorm.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with a club or activity on campus.
Also, I'd suggest going to the new rec center!
Ask yourself if you can handel snow and climate change.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Professors are very kind and are willing to help. They are knowledgeable of their field and bring new wisdom to each and every class. Classes are smaller which allow more one-on-one learning. Smaller class sizes also allow a closer relationship with students and professors which is convenient when searching for internships and letters of recommendation. Although, some professors can be annoying when taking general classes for liberal art requirements. There will always be professors that are better than others and that are hard to listen to.
Am enjoying being here Flagstaff is beautiful. It's hard not to love being surrounded by mountains and being in a small college town. Downtown is the cutest and there is so much atmosphere and character. Overall the weather is beautiful. Summer is by far the best. Throughout the year the wind is strong and tends to create a chill to the weather, but it is still worth it!
Bang for the buck NAU offers and gives every incoming student a promise of their 4 year tuition rate. Whether or not the tuition rate increases, the year you enter school is the tuition rate you will pay for 4 years of college. NAU is also the least expensive of the 3 Arizona state schools.
Tips for prospective students Be true to yourself at all times. You will find your nitch at school and you will find your group of friends. Be open and embrace new opportunities. You won't regret it!
Great for these types of students NAU is great for ALL types of students! It fits every type, from athletic to very bright to creative and eco-friendly. It is a great fit for every student.

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here The air up here is amazing and you really get to know your professors. I have met a variety of people and most of that is through the Army ROTC program. It's a small community and the stores are within walking distance as well as the theatre and banks. You don't have to travel far to get to where you want to go and the food is to die for.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot From what I have read on this site and on other student review sites this collage seems to have everything I want the only reason i haven't given it all five stars is because i haven't yet been there
Will enjoy being here I love it when there is a possibility for one on one time with teachers and I long for seasons that are actually seasons unlike San Antonio which is where i currently live
Bang for the buck I have researched a lot of colleges and universities and this one definitely seems like i a bang for your buck especially since i am applying with the Personal Advantage Application which if i am admitted will entitle me to a four-year fixed tuition and no application fee so that is also a plus
Tips for prospective students research everything the cost, what the surrounding area is like. how are the teachers, job opportunities and so on and so on. don't take everything at face value because they might just be sugar coating the truth
Great for these types of students I don't know but hopefully it will be perfect for a student like me

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers are fantastic here. They all love their subjects and are so knowledgeable. For instance my religions teacher knows sanskrit, so he'll translate ancient Hindu poems for us to read. I am learning so much and loving school even more.
Am enjoying being here The weather here is beautiful! There are beautiful trees and flowers everywhere and the university is really dedicated to keeping the grounds nice. There are also so many great people and so many things to get involved in that I am making the transition from high school very well.
Bang for the buck NAU is the cheapest of the major Arizona universities. They also lock in your tuition for four years which is so nice. The housing and meal plans aren't too bad either. Also, the bookstore does a great job of renting and buying back books to help students save money.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you have a good winter jacket. You'll also want a light windbreaker-type jacket for those rainy days too.
Great for these types of students If you love the outdoors, want to be part of a university that is very environmentally conscious and like a smaller town, this is the place for you!

Am enjoying being here It is so beautiful up here and the campus offers a variety of things you can do when you have nothing to do.
Bang for the buck It is actually one of the cheaper Universitys, but they offer probably so much more then most!
Tips for prospective students Get involved and DO NOT be afraid to go up to a random person and say hi! The best part is everyone is so friendly!
Great for these types of students outgoing, fun, spiritual, confused, family-oriented, and spirited!

Will enjoy being here The weather is absolutely amazing (compared to Phoenix) and the campus is absolutely gorgeous.
Bang for the buck As a resident of Arizona I don't have to worry about in/out of state tuition. Along with the AIMS scholarship and various others I don't expect to spend much on attending this college.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although classes have just barely began, I already feel like I am learning a lot of things. It is more than I am used to, but no unbearable.
Am enjoying being here The people, weather, classes, etc. are all absolutely amazing. Everyone greets you with a smile and is willing to help you with anything. They do not treat you like an idiot if you ask a 'stupid question.'
Bang for the buck I am able to use the bus system, not only for the school but for the entire city, absolutely free. The food is fantastic, and we have a lot of free events. The only downfall, is the cost for books. Some are written specifically for NAU, so you aren't able to find the cheaper elsewhere.
Tips for prospective students If you are thinking about coming to Northern Arizona University, DO IT. Stop questioning yourself! I am so pleased with all of my experiences here and I couldn't imagine ever having thought about another school.
Great for these types of students Anyone can fit in here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot So many interesting classes and the teachers are always willing to help because they have less students and smaller classes than other colleges.
Am enjoying being here I love this school and campus and city!
Bang for the buck There are cool things to see and do and participate in, but tuition keeps going up and other fees are being added to pay for it.
Tips for prospective students Get involved and do as many things as you can that way you have the best college experience possible!
Great for these types of students People who like snow, being outdoors, smaller schools, interacting with people, having smaller classes and a more personal college experience.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot This school has a great teacher to student ratio, and when I visited our amazing tour guide said that there are few large lecture classes, which means more one on one with my teachers.
Will enjoy being here I loved the town Flagstaff when I visited, and the campus was a great size. The dorm rooms seemed great, very spacious.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors are extremely helpful and available for students. If I ever have a question about a lecture or an assignment, I feel comfortable approaching them.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy the entire atmosphere at NAU. Everyone is very social and outgoing. I am constantly meeting new people and interacting in different groups around campus. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations on campus, so its easy to get involved. I also really like all of the events that the university has. This past semester we had the Arizona Fair come to our school for the day, and it was a blast.
Bang for the buck One of the huge factors for me in choosing a school was cost. The thing that really interested me about NAU in the beginning was the four year plan. They guarantee your tuition won't change for four years, and since tuition is increasing everywhere, that was a really nice bonus. Also, the tuition covers all of your classes, as well as events put on by the school, free access to tutoring, and the fitness center. Occasionally there are additional class fees depending on which classes you take, but that's the same for any school. Overall, I am very pleased with with the cost of education here.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused and try not to miss any classes. It's important to be social and meet new people, but its more important to remember that you are at school to enhance your education, so don't get behind on your work and get help in the free tutoring center if there is anything you don't understand.
Great for these types of students NAU is great for friendly, dedicated, and well-rounded students. There is a wide variety of personalities and interests in students here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors here at NAU have really challenged and pushed me to be the best I can be. This has proven to expand my knowledge in the subject I am currently studying. It's hard work, but very rewarding.
Am enjoying being here I love Flagstaff! It's cool, small, and friendly. The NAU campus is just as friendly. It's smaller than many other campuses, so I feel like I can get to know more people on a personal level.
Bang for the buck NAU has a lot to offer if you're willing to try.
Tips for prospective students RESEARCH!! NAU has a lot to offer, you just have to look around to see what's out there. There's no better way to meet new people and learn your way around then getting involved in some of the great clubs NAU offers.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I've been able to speak to professors as well as current students and have heard nothing but positive reviews about how the campus really is catered for the students success. I've heard of the availability of the professors and am positive nothing but academic success will come from my time spent at NAU.
Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful, not only because of the environment, but everything that NAU and the surrounding Flagstaff area have to offer. Having visited the campus, I began to feel at home, and a sense of serenity, and that is definitely one of the reasons I will be gladly attending in the fall.
Bang for the buck They seem to make everything so affordable and efficient, and are really available to be able to help the student and his/her family with whatever the needs may be, whether its getting to know the campus, or being able to afford attending.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot NAU is known for it's smaller classes & hands on learning. With a smaller class, it's easier to get help & actually meet the teachers & get help when you need it. It's easier to learn from those that you are close with & know. It's easier to feel comfortable with a smaller class that is close.
Will enjoy being here The surrounding town & forest is GORGEOUS. There really isn't much more to say. I've visited Flagstaff many times, & this past time being up there to visit NAU, I found that Flagstaff may be a small town, but it has so much history & things to do there, that you could never really become bored of it. There is the Lowell Observatory, the Downtown district with small old shops, great for walking around with friends, a shopping mall, hiking trails & Snow Bowl during the winter for those that love skiing/snowboarding. All of this is in close distance from NAU. Which also, for anyone up for a little challenge and fun, NAU offers CREDITS to learn to snowboard or ski.
Bang for the buck NAU is one of the few schools that offers locked tuition, meaning your rates won't go up once you have a estimate that first year there. My other friends going to the in state colleges are paying more than 10,000 for their first year, so far, I'm only paying around 8,000 for this first semester, and this is before any scholarship deductions. : )
Tips for prospective students RESEARCH is key to finding the perfect college. It's long & hard, but it pays off. Find the college that offers you everything you want at the prices you want. Don't go just because you get a scholarship or because your friends or family want you to go there.
For prospective NAU students: I was told from a previous student that you have to get out there and do as much as you can in your free time. Join learning communities your freshman year, join clubs. She also said her best spent money was on the snowboarding/skiing opportunity that NAU offers. NAU gives credits for learning to ski/board. I was told its a base pay of around 160 for the season, and that includes the rentals & NAU transports you to the slopes, 7 days a week, whenever you want. Should look into this if you decide to go! : )Great for these types of students This school is perfect for me (And so I would assume anyone like this) because it offers smaller classes so I can meet/know my teacher & get one on one help if I don't understand things. I love that it is hands on in the field learning as well as adventurous learning. I am a very outdoors/adventurous person, so any school that supports that is great. NAU is surrounded in hiking trails, biking, outdoor fun. NAU tries to meet the needs of a diverse amount of personalities, learning types, & needs.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I have sat-in on some of the classes here and I can't believe how wonderful the professors are. They are really down to Earth, plus the classes are small and the teachers really do care. Even when I just sat-in the professor asked me about who I was and what I wanted to do with my life.
Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful and of course you have the snow too!!!
Bang for the buck This campus offers almost every major, except for Pre-med...too bad because I wish I could go here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers and programs here at NAU are all very well-rounded and full of information. The opportunities are phenomenal! I am a Psychology Major with a Minor in Business and both colleges are exceptional! My Microeconomics teacher is involved with one of the many Environmental projects here at NAU and my psychology statistics professor is also my career adviser.
Am enjoying being here People on and around campus are so friendly and welcoming! Our campus is fairly small for a university, but the atmosphere is huge! The culture is so diverse because our community and college are constantly intertwined with one another. Flagstaff and NAU are both involved with its community of people and students by offering so many concerts, art walks, and other fun events.
Bang for the buck Northern Arizona University's tuition price is lower than the other Arizona universities, but that does not mean we have less opportunities than they do. We have many different majors within many separate colleges on campus. Advisers and faculty are always making sure students have the information we need to accomplish everything during our college experiences.
Tips for prospective students If you do choose to come to NAU I highly recommend living on campus at least for your first year. This will help you find a place in the NAU community because it is so much easier to learn about all the events happening while your on campus.
Make your Resident Adviser your best friend. He or she is there to help you through your first and future years of college.
Do something! This could mean joining a club or playing on one of the many intramural sports teams that NAU has to offer. It will be so much easier on you, especially for your first year. Making friends here is easy, it's simply up to you whether or not you want to put yourself out there and have fun.Great for these types of students Northern Arizona University is an amazing college for any student looking for a tight-knit, small community. It is perfect for any student who wants to earn their degree and can handle a laid-back atmosphere and an extremely diverse culture.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I feel like I will learn alot on this campus and I look forward to coming here in the summer for the STAR Program.
Will enjoy being here I love the NAU Campus because Flagstaff is my second home and I know that NAU campus all too well. My sister goes to school there and I have spent my summer there for the past 3 years of my high school with the Upward Bound Summer Academy, and I absolutely loved it!
Bang for the buck Im sure it is going to be good with the money portions of it.
Tips for prospective students I have not spent an entire year here, but from what I did spend, it was a lot of fun. It is a kind of small/medium sized campus, but it is perfect. It has a lot of resources for the students and it is a great learning environment.

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here Everyone is so laid back! This is a very liberal campus, and nearly all ideas are accepted here. It's so easy to get along with anyone!
Bang for the buck Compare these two prices--for a covered parking pass at Arizona State University it costs about $900 dollars for the year. For the same type of pass at Northern Arizona University, it only costs $450.
Tips for prospective students Housing is becoming limited! So make sure you have a back up plan in case it doesn't work out.
Great for these types of students Laid back, easy going students. Liberal and open minded people. Be ready for the outdoors and snow! There's tons of camping, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is so much to learn from these amazing teachers. Each day in class I walk away with more knowledge than I thought I could ever get from being in a classroom. There is also a lot of help from tutors and the teachers are always willing to set up a meeting in their office to help you with problems or questions you may have.
Am enjoying being here The campus is absolutely beautiful and there is always fun activities going on all around. There is normally a band or a singer performing in the Student Union that students can watch and listen to while they eat which is also a plus to the day.
Bang for the buck When paying for a University, it is always a tough decision to make because lets face it they are all expensive. But Northern Arizona University is 100% worth the money. Flagstaff is an awesome town, the campus is amazing, there are always activities going on at school such as watching movies like Get him to the Greek playing on the big screen. There is no where I would rather spend my college experience at.
Tips for prospective students I would stock up on warm winter clothes before coming up to Flagstaff to be apart of the Northern Arizona University college experience. It can get pretty cold. Always come prepared to class because no matter what you will learn something great and won't want to forget it. Have fun but stay on track! There is no way you are going to want to miss out on all four years this University has to offer.
Great for these types of students I would say that Northern Arizona University is great for all types of students. Any student who would like to learn, get an incredible education and become part of a wonderful community should be interested in coming to this college.
