Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot When it comes to how much you learn I believe that it is up to you to take classes that are interesting and a little bit challenging, because the classes that are easy tend to get boring and not teach you as much.
Am enjoying being here I love the atmosphere. Downtown Portland is such an excepting place, people of all ages and walks of life live here and fit in. My classes have multiple age groups and that creates a very unique learning experience.
Bang for the buck College can be very expensive, but I think that with all the options Portland State has to offer that everyone can find their passion.
Tips for prospective students Keep in mind that you actually need to take at least 15 credits to stay on track for graduation, but do not overload yourself either. Try to take one fun class every term. That way you can relax at least one class period a week, because sometimes there isn't time outside of your classes to relax.
Great for these types of students Portland State is great for students who want to be in the middle of it all, and who want to meet many different types of people. Also for people that want to experience the campus feel but be right inside the urban society at the same time.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Depending on how much you apply yourself you can really learn a lot. You learn from everyone and about everything, very interesting approach to teaching here.
Am enjoying being here Campus is diverse and has something for everyone. Tons of clubs and groups to join, music in the park and is in the heart of downtown so everything is within walking distance.
Bang for the buck While they aren't 100% streamlined in all processes, this school really tries to give you what you need, and tailor your education to your specific goals.
Tips for prospective students If you choose this school, don't overload yourself with courses in your first term. You will want to only take about 12 credits (that is full time) to give yourself time to get used to studying AND to be free to explore the city and campus.
Great for these types of students adventurous, dedicated, passionate, those who believe in a cause, those who want to a school that focuses on education and does not revolve around its sports teams, those who like the city and those looking for new experiences.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes are varied, each student is required to enroll in what is called a Freshman Inquiry. Its kind of a homeroom class, of only about 20-30 students. These take care of a large number of general education credit requirements and are a great break from large lecture classes where you feel uncomfortable asking questions. There are 5 or so subjects to choose from, and all of them fulfill a large number of general education credit requirements.. (I'm in Sustainability!) Each FRINQ has a breakout Mentor Session, where the class is broken up even further to groups of 10 or twelve students with a mentor who gives us valuable info and helps us with any questions we have about the course.
Starting off, as far as the rest of the courses go, the professors are dedicated to enriching us with information at comfortable speeds. As the classes get higher in number (205, 301, etc.) the pace speeds up considerably, but these classes were made with humans in mind, so it all is entirely manageable.Am enjoying being here I really like the college itself. The campus is beautiful. We're surrounded by trees and interesting buildings. The park blocks in the middle of campus is a great break from the streets, and excellent place to hang out.
The location is really the main selling point for me. We are literally downtown. The campus is located in what's called the Fareless Square, which means we can hop on the MAX and get taken to almost any location downtown, the mall, and a short distance over the river for free. (After that, you can just buy a cheap ticket to get where you need to go, like the airport.) A large concert venue is a few minutes away, and you can hop on a bus to get to anywhere else in Portland. We also just got a brand new recreation and exercise facility which is stunningly modern and free for students!Bang for the buck For out-of-state students like me, the price for tuition is steep. However, financial aid programs like the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange Program) make it possible for families with low-incomes. I highly recommend finding out what sort of financial aid you can get before getting your heart set on attending here if money may be a problem.
Tips for prospective students Find out what sort of financial aid you can get in coming here.
Be sure you have an idea on what sort of major you're interested in, because the prerequisite classes are extremely specific and need to get done with as soon as you can, so that all the other necessary classes are available to you.
Register for the earliest possible orientation/registration day. As a freshman, its hard to get into many of the classes you'll need for your major requirements if you come late in the season.Great for these types of students I chose Portland mainly because of its music and art scene. Almost every band I like visits here at one time or another, and the city bleeds creativity. There are opportunities everywhere. However, the college is in no way steered toward a specific group of people. You can meet people of all sorts who attend here with one thing in common: they love Portland.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Small Classes are great and the professors seem over qualified which is great. Make sure to become involved in the school to get the full benefit of the learning enviroment.
Am enjoying being here I love Portland there is always something going on and there is something for everyone. PSU is a great school with excellent professors and provides a good education.
Bang for the buck I think the college is worth the money all though PSU doesn't offer as much financial aid as the bigger universities. Textbooks are really expensive too. Living in Portland also adds to the bill.
Tips for prospective students Apartments in the city are expensive to plan ahead. The grocery stores are also expensive. Textbooks are expensive try to avoid the PSU Bookstore. Don't expect much school spirit at this school. Join a club or organization so that you don't fell disconnected.
Great for these types of students Great for commuter students, non traditional, and student that aren't into the party school atmosphere.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot When you begin registering for classes the first thing you will notice is the unbelievably huge list of classes to choose from. There is literally something for everyone at this school. Not only that, there are multiple professors teaching the given class. That way, if you hear from your friend that Professor Man is a horribly boring lecturer but you had your heart set on taking Business Communications, have no fear, there are probably at least three other professors teaching that same class!
All in all, I have learned a lot in my first year at PSU. The professors are truly devoted to their students succeeding and it shows in their passion for their job.Am enjoying being here I attended a private school from kindergarden all the way through my senior year. My graduating class was 80 kids, out of our approximately 300 student high school. Basically my entire high school was the size of most graduating classes. When I started at Portland State with its 28,000 plus student body, I wasn't sure how I was going to adapt. That being said, I have fallen in love with this school. I have made so many friends and it is so easy to get involved in pretty much anything you are interested in. I transitioned smoothly from my tiny high school to Oregon's largest University and I wouldn't change a thing.
Bang for the buck In comparison to many colleges, PSU is not terribly expensive. However, as a young college student I still feel the sting when tuition is due. That being said, the millions of opportunities offered at PSU, in my opinion, makes every cent worth it. Not only are the classes great, the events a blast, and the location unbeatable, Portland State has an unfounded number of connections to the surrounding businesses in the downtown area. This gives graduate as well as undergrads the priceless ability to move from school to career in a heartbeat.
Tips for prospective students Truly take advantage of all that Portland State has to offer. Whether it's their multitude of advisors, classes, or activities. There are so many wonderful things this school has to give its students, I urge everyone to take full advantage of every bit of it.
Great for these types of students Active, studious, business oriented, social, ect...like I said before, this school has something for everyone. The only people who may not like it as well are those looking for a smaller school or one located in a college-town rather than the heart of downtown Portland. Otherwise, there is undoubtedly an aspect of this school for every type of student.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This school offers a wide range of classes and with its University Studies program it is encouraged that you take advantage of that fact. This school not only wants you to expand your knowledge but your perspective as well.
Am enjoying being here This school is so open and is home to such a diverse group of people from all over the world. The staff are very welcoming and the students are nice and enjoy being here as much as I do, and that creates such a pleasing environment for optimal learning.
Bang for the buck The school is so large and offers so much, yet it is quite affordable and costs less than other schools in the Oregon. This school is money well spent.
Tips for prospective students In your first year I suggest take advantage of all the things orientation provides and definitely check out Party in the Park. There you can get acquainted with the many clubs PSU has, and I'm sure you will find something that interests you.
Great for these types of students This school is great for open-minded students who wish to expand their knowledge, not just within their specific major but all-around.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Portland State University is located right in the heart of the city. It has diverse place where people from different places can look for their studies and find their paths in life. It will provide a student with classes that he or she needs for a his or her career. It has varieties of study fields that will help a person to find his or her enjoyable path in life.
Will enjoy being here I hope I will enjoy being here because my friends from school enjoyed it and advised me to go here. I hope to have a good time studying and enjoying myself while studying. It is going to be a great time that I will remember for the rest of my life growing academically, developing personality, and looking forward to promising future,
Tips for prospective students Students, who really want to learn and be successful in life, need to work hard with a desire to improve in academic level and life principles. Only working hard will bring someone to a desired success. Working hard, a person has an opportunity to climb up the social level and have a good enjoyable life meeting wants as well as basic needs. It is a journey, but it worth it.
Great for these types of students Portland State University is a great place for all students. It is very diverse. People from all over the world come there to study and pursue their interests. People that want to be in a medical field, engineering, law, all fit here and many many others. It is an opportunity for all who wants to enjoy life.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Portland State University is a rather large university - with the population being that of the largest university in the state of Oregon - it has to offer a lot. One might think that since the university offers many courses intended for a large variety of majors, that the rate of education and how the classes are ran may be compromised for the size. This couldn't be further from the truth at Portland State University. The professors are extremely well educated on their subject and, to my pleasant surprise, graduate students that teach lower level classes are well prepared and trained to manage their classes as well. If you go to classes and pay attention, you will learn more than you expected.
Am enjoying being here Portland State University prides itself for being an urban university that is in the heart of the largest city in Portland. There is always something to do on campus - whether it be a student organization activity or volunteer work. If campus life isn't suiting for you, though, the city of Portland surrounds you. The MAX, a light rail train that connects downtown Portland to the outskirts of the city, is free in the downtown area so there is no limit to what you can explore as soon as classes and campus activities end.
Bang for the buck With a massive library, multiple computer labs (one that is nearly open 24/7), a free tutoring center and the UNST mentor program, Portland State University doesn't hesitate to make the higher education experience an easier process than it has to be. Help can found through multiple resources; academic, personal or otherwise. Not only this, Portland State University has such a massive selection of majors to choose from that it's not impossible to fulfill multiple interests while studying here.
Tips for prospective students Take as many college transferring and AP classes as possible. To move up every year, one must take 15 classes a term. Full time student status at Portland State University is considered 12 credits. At the beginning of Freshman year, 12 credits are recommended. Transferring credits will ease the transition into the higher education process and save a lot of stress come registration time Sophomore year.
Great for these types of students To those who can't stand the idea of taking a couple years of Prerequisite classes such as English, science and math, PSU is a wonderful option. The University Studies program does, however, stay with you through all four years of the experience from Freshman Inquiry through Senior Capstones. This program does create a sense of community and allows you to explore possible interests for those who are not sure what they want to major in.
Also, for the city dwellers and those who live in a small town and want an opposite pace of life, Portland State University is possibly the only urban campus that I know of the weaves itself into the city.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Portland State University has provided me with a lot of education this past fall term. I am a Biology Major and I'm currently enrolled in the Principles of Biology sequence. The lectures are adequate, my professor was really great, and the labs were really laid back and fun. It has been a great experience so far being in this sequence, and I'm looking forward to winter term. Portland State University also has a library that is usually open until 11 PM, and it would be wise to take advantage of that. Also, the computer labs can be really helpful. From what I have seen during my time at Portland State University, the college provides a great environment for learning. The campus might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it is very easy to get used to. And once you know where everything is, you have a great deal of resources at your fingertips. Portland State University provides a lot of opportunities to take learning to the next level, it's up to the student to take those opportunities.
Am enjoying being here I really like the Portland State University campus. It is very diverse and very open. Plus it's downtown, you have a lot of options when it comes to your breaks from class. You can find tons of places to hang out or get lunch. It's a great location for the school. It's also a great place to meet people. The school provides a lot of availability, mobility, and, in a sense, a lot of freedom. There is really only one big con for Portland State University. The campus is not smoke-free, and being in downtown, Portland, there are a lot of smokers on campus. It's quite a problem for me, but there isn't much I can do. Other than that, like I said before, the campus being downtown is really great. It provides a great atmosphere and people can just take the chance to explore the city and learn and experience new things. It's a great place to be.
Bang for the buck Let's face it. College is going to be expensive no matter where you go. But for Oregon residents, Portland State University has a pretty decent tuition for a four-year university. Plus, there are a lot of options to lower tuition. For example, I chose not to live on campus, and that brings the price down a great deal. Being the great establishment it is, I believe that Portland State University is a really good deal for the price.
Tips for prospective students For potential incoming students, I would just say make sure the school is right for you. Make sure you are all right with the location, the environment you will be in, the types of programs the school has to offer, etc. It's the same with choosing any college, really. Just make sure you like the school, and make sure it has what you're looking for. It is a great college, and it can benefit you a lot. Also, make sure you have a good work ethic. Make sure you do all your work and get your GPA up early. It's very difficult to boost your GPA in later years, so make sure you do well from the start. That's not to say don't have fun. You should always have room for fun. It's a great place for new positive experiences, make sure to take the right opportunities.
Great for these types of students The school has a really great Science program. I am a General Biology major, and the university has a Master's Degree program. I am hoping to get my MS degree, and I might get it from Portland State University. I have also heard that it is a great college for people that are into the arts. A lot of music majors head to Portland State University. It's also good for people going into politics. Honestly, it is a bit of an all-around school. But like I said before, look into it before you commit.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Portland State University is well integrated into the surrounding downtown community. The students, faculty, and staff are highly conciseness of their impact on the environment. There is always something new, progressive, and intriguing going on around campus!
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to your classmates and professors. They can all help you find out more about the school, programs, and benefits.
Academic Rigor Students are held accountable for themselves and are encouraged to push to their own degree.
Dorm Life Many of our buildings are eco-friendly with renewable resources and materials.
Food and Dining On campus there is a dinning hall and food court but off campus there is the rest of Portland full of food carts and great dinning opportunities.
What to do for fun Anything- the University is located right in the downtown area and the public transportation is great.
Bang for the buck All colleges are expensive these days and the student body at PSU is trying to ensure it doesn't become an unbearable burden for it's graduating students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We start a little later in the year (last week of September) but there is always a week or two of campus wide celebrations before we come back to classes.
Great for these types of students Those who care about their impact on the world and those who care to make an impact on the world.
Clubs and Activities Endless amounts!
Greek Life We have a few fraternities and sororities on campus.
Campus Safety I have never felt threatened on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Adequate resources, such as computer labs, with some very dedicated and knowledgeable professors. Strives to promote community involvement, often related to one's major. Does not have the best administrative staff and lacks in funding for various Art's programs.
Tips for prospective students A lot of students drop courses during the first or second week, so if a class is full, show up anyways with the correct form. Try not to get discouraged with the university requirements such as senior capstones. The courses can be rewarding.
Academic Rigor Challenging, however, most instructors understand that students have lives outside of school, such a family and/or work obligations.
Food and Dining Dinning Hall is OK. However, there are a lot of food carts nearby.
What to do for fun Downtown has a lot to offer, from eating good food and drinking good beer and wine, to shopping and exploring.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Anything goes as far as dress and appearance, anything...
Great for these types of students All types

Academic Rigor the college pushing a student to achieve their most.
Dorm Life i know nothing about this subject.
Food and Dining i would not personally know but from what i saw online it looked good.
What to do for fun exercise at a gym. i also enjoy reading.
Bang for the buck this college is about average when it comes to current costs but above average in educating its students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i saw where the student recreation center is new and looks very nice.
Great for these types of students who are athletic.
Clubs and Activities good.
Greek Life good.
Campus Safety herd it is a fairly safe campus for a large city college.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Portland State University is great if you're a commuter, seeking to get in school and get out with a degree. However, within my one year experience of the school, I found that it was vastly overpriced for the quality of educators. Although, it is possible to get more out of the school by doing the following: select classes that are smaller, higher level, and check out your professors on ratemyprofessor.com. It tends to be very accurate and has been spot on about the professors I had. It's not the school to go to for the traditional college experience, but I wouldn't rule it out as a valid and useful institution.
Am enjoying being here I didn't enjoy the student climate, simply because I was a commuter and it was really hard to stay involved in campus activities. This is the case for many students at PSU and there effort to involve students in activities reflects this.
Bang for the buck This school has had a double in tuition costs in the past ten years. The school has spent a lot in recent years in developing student exercising facilities and freshman dormitories to attract students to the campus. It's not a good price. I recommend getting as many credits from community colleges and AP courses as you can, then transferring. But remember, of your 180 credits, you must have about 145 from PSU and you have to take like 45 of your last credits at PSU.
Tips for prospective students Don't come here if you're a commuter who needs a sense of support from the school. It's really hard to be an active student at this school when you are far away.
Great for these types of students Commuters, non-traditional/working students.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I feel that in some of the classes I'm learning a lot and in others they are just a waste of time. A lot is to be said for the teacher, I've had a few teachers that are really inspiring and a few that put me to sleep. At Portland State students are required to take a freshman inquiry class, which is basically like your English-writing class. Everyone that I know thinks it's a complete waste of time and I agree. Also along with this class you are required to take a mentor class which is another waste of time all together. I know english and writing are very critically important, but honestly we don't learn or do a lot of it in these classes.
Am enjoying being here I like being in downtown Portland, the campus is located right downtown so you're close to everything. I'm a sunshine girl, so the all the rain gets to me a bit, but for the most part it's bearable. I like the campus because it's downtown. I love Portland because it's so diverse, growing up I always felt out of place and different. In high school I was the nerdy art kid, but now I feel normal and appreciated for being into art and indie music. I feel like Portland is the place where all the artists, musicians, actors, and whatever else go.
Bang for the buck I think that all college is too expensive, Portland State is one of the cheapest colleges in Oregon, that is if you are in state, if you are out of state then your tuition will be much higher. I think that for the amount we pay to go here we don't get enough. For one professors never respond to your emails. Spring term is coming up and I was curious about some art classes so I sent some teachers emails, that was around three weeks ago and none of them ever got back to me. The email addresses that I sent them to, was provided by the Portland State website. Another thing is that they tell you to explore different career options, which means to try out different types of classes. Say you want to try a digital page design class and you are an anthropology major, you can't take that class unless you get instructor approval, which as I said before is very hard to get since the professors never respond. So yes, I think we pay way to much.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to have a lot of essays, Be open minded.
Great for these types of students If you felt out of place in high school and never felt like you fit in, everyone fits in, in Portland
are interested in art, music and culture. Like being in a big cityLogin to rate or flag the reviews

Am enjoying being here This school location is great. I like how professional the campus is.
Bang for the buck The school has an accredited business school which is very impressive. The business school is much more affordable to attend than major schools with the same accreditation.
Tips for prospective students Go to PSU if you want to move up rank in society
Great for these types of students This school is good for students who want to learn and not party every day.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Taking classes at PSU has helped me learn a lot, not only in my career field but also in other areas that I may have normally overlooked. There are courses that are required for your graduation that must be unrelated to your major. It really helps open the door to learn a great deal more and you are even able to apply something you wouldn't normally think about to your career. The teachers are well informed and able to answer questions either in class or outside of class.
Am enjoying being here My experience here has been very positive so far. The administration side of things is usually very clear and easy to work through. The school side of things, you may want to check a website or with a friend to make sure you get the best instructor for your learning style. There is a diverse range of instructors for classes and it is important to find an instructor who will best fit you.
Bang for the buck There are lots of extracurricular activities and clubs you can get into as well as the education being worth it. Even though some of the options they force students into paying, the best way to get the most out of your money is to use the resources available to you.
Tips for prospective students The bookstore is not part of the college. If at all possible buy your books elsewhere. Also, check with the teacher if you can use earlier editions, they are usually much cheaper but work just as well.
Definitely check with a friend, other students, or websites on different teachers. Some teachers may work out great for you, others will not, to make sure you get the most out of your learning experience this will be important.
Form a study group, or join one, they really will benefit you. If you know the subject material and don't think you need a study group you are still missing out. You benefit from being able to explain things to others so that you better understand it yourself.Great for these types of students A diverse range of students. PSU has a very broad group of students that attend. There really isn't an ideal student for this college, everyone can fit in.

Bang for the buck College is expensive, period. But compared to the larger universities, UO and OSU, it's less costly.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I love all my professors here. Each of them has something unique to offer to the class that they teach-- and they always make themselves or their TA's available to you.
Am enjoying being here It's a great atmosphere; certainly a change from my small town and (in comparison to PSU) small community college. It was overwhelming the first week, but easy to get into the groove of things.
Bang for the buck Out of state tuition is killer, especially if you miss the scholarship deadline. The oregon residents and WUE scholarship students all say it's much cheaper than the other oregon schools, so for them, I'm sure it's worth it.
Tips for prospective students Apply very early! The application process takes a few weeks and the deadline for all scholarships is February 1st. Take the time to apply over winter break (or even November/December); even if you don't decide to go, it will save you a potential headache.
Great for these types of students city people, self-motivated students, those who like dorm life, students who don't mind large campuses with tons of people

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Portland State University is a well-rounded college with many exciting opportunities for 2-year and 4-year students alike. Its linguistics programs are top notch, and so are its staff! The staff at Portland State University is one of the most friendly and understanding groups of professors around, which makes their classes just that much more meaningful to a student in the long run.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to your professors! As stated above, the professors are very understanding, and the only way for them to know what you're struggling with is to talk to them! It may be tough to break out of your shell, but it's certainly worth it in the end.
Academic Rigor Portland State offers a rigorous course load, but not so much as to overwhelm anyone. It may seem like a lot at first, but the more one works at it, the easier it will get.
Dorm Life Portland State is right in the middle of downtown Portland, which means there's all kinds of amazing things to check out around the area! The park blocks are nearby which are simply beautiful during any season. The dorms are cozy and warm.
Food and Dining This is where things get interesting - PSU's food and dining is really incredible if you know where to look! There's the main cafeteria in Smith, which offers a lot of different food types - from Italian to Chinese to regular old bagels. However, it is not going to be the cup of tea for a student that may have alternative diets. That's why there is another cafe in the basement of Smith called the 'Food for Thought' cafe that is almost entirely student run and is chock full of vegan and gluten-free options. The menu is always changing, so be sure to check it out daily!
What to do for fun Since Portland State is right in the middle of downtown Portland, there are many places nearby for fun. For example, in the afternoon one can walk just a few blocks from Neuberger to find the Chit Chat Cafe, which features sandwiches, teas, bentos, and all sorts of other things. It has a nice, open atmosphere with games and books for people to read.
The music scene is also pretty big in Portland as well, and if one were to check out the Portland Mercury, there are bound to be a ton of lists of different bands in town.
Portland State also has a library nearby for any bookworms, and for all of ones purchasing needs, Powells, the largest bookstore in the world, is just a streetcar ride away.Great for these types of students Great for vegans and alternative health plans, LGBTQ youth, Applied Linguistics students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Portland State University is a great mix of traditional and nontraditional students. Situated in lovely downtown Portland on the Park Blocks, PSU has a campus that varies both historic and new buildings. The University Studies program encourages community involvement and socially responsible learning.
Tips for prospective students My biggest tip to prospective students is to come check the campus out before you start here. Not only will you get to see the campus, but you will get an idea of if you want to live on-campus or off.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes past the 100 level are adequately challenging. This is an area where the adage, You get what you give is certainly true. Put your all into your schoolwork, and you'll be rewarded by a great academic experience.
Dorm Life Dorm life is ok here. Compared to living off-campus, it is a little pricey, but you get the dorm experience. There are numerous dorms to suit your preference, including family housing for non-traditional students and First Year Experience for new freshmen.
Food and Dining There are numerous options on campus to catch a meal or snack. From on-campus convenience stores to a plethora of diverse food carts, along with a couple of cafeterias and plenty of nearby restaurants, you'll always have an nearby.
What to do for fun PSU is just a short jaunt away from all sorts of entertainment. Close by is Pioneer Square Mall and the downtown Portland shopping area. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is just across the river, and a handful of hiking areas and parks are within a mile or two of the university, including Marquam Nature Area and the Portland Japanese Gardens.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Portland State University has a great campus that allows for a lot of diversity and growth. The overall experience that I've had at PSU is great because I have made a lot of new friends, gained knowledge, and pursue my future with a bright outlook. The students and faculty here are always willing to help and welcome any ideas.
Tips for prospective students Check out the area and definitely take a campus tour as well as conduct one yourself to get the feel of the university. With PSU's location, look into your means of transportation because you may have to commute everyday.
Academic Rigor The courses here have a variety of range when it comes to academic rigor however the classes here are hard enough to challenge you yet allows you to immerse in the subject and absorb what you need to know. Overall, classes are pretty fun and engaging.
Dorm Life I like that the dorms are located so close to campus and that they are renovating and building newer and nicer buildings. Being in a dorm really allows you to meet new people and explore different cultures as well as gives off a sense of independence and responsibility.
Food and Dining The food in the dorms are fairly good, however the cafeteria is mediocre. I would say try new things because they can surprise you for example the food carts around campus of one of the dining centers.
What to do for fun When the weather is nice, there are students all over the park blocks and just enjoying the day outside. The campus offers a rec center that one can take classes for fun or join clubs that vary from dragon boating to student associations. There is also a game room with pool tables and a bowling alley at the basement of one of the buildings.
Bang for the buck The tuition rate at PSU is affordable and If one wants to stay close to home or the city life then this could be the right place for you

Tips for prospective students Get involved in clubs, groups, or events in order to enrich your educational experience and network since PSU is in the heart of Portland.
Academic Rigor It is challenging since it is a university however there are many resources available for anyone at any given time to help them with either tutoring, computer lab or essay writing.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Frustratingly, yet satisfyingly consistent. Many of the professors are incredibly devoted to helping students succeed. Yet, as much as this is true about half want to cause conformity and droneness in their students. Progressively liberal & naiively passive.
Tips for prospective students Find out what the expected workload and format is upfront based on what the professor says in the syllabus and how consistent he/she follows the syllabus the first week of class. Also, go to the department the class is being taught in and ask random students if they have had your professor and/or if they know about the professor's reputation.
Academic Rigor More or less this depends on what you make of it, what kinds of classes you choose, what academic subjects your take, etc. Psychology classes taught at the 200-300 level are more challenging than Psychology 400-500 classes, so that you are more than amply prepared for the advanced/intermediate level.
Dorm Life I never stayed in the dorms, but I had many friends who did and they rated their overall quality as average with some housing problems. They mostly were talking about fixing stuff and quality.
Food and Dining Food is good quality since PSU is right there in the park blocks, you aren't confined to eating food in the student union. Otherwise, the student union is always going through dining changes with vegan/vegetarian food being offered in the Food for Thought Cafe. In the student dining, there is Sbarro, New York Bagels, a Wok, Burger grill, and food to grab and go. Occasionally, the pastries and danishes that are sold with the Starbucks Espresso coffee are stale, but for the most part the food quality and choices appeal to breakfast, lunch, and dinner needs of the students. If you get sick of these there are a bunch of food carts on SW 4th avenue and a few right there in the park blocks.
What to do for fun You can listen to a loud ranting in the park blocks of the political or religious persuasion. Then there is the party in the blocks with all kinds of musicians. Saturday/Sunday Farmers Market sets up with fruits, veggies, and homemade goods. Student groups/fraternities/sororities have mixers and recruitment. There is always a pajama breakfast some time in the year. Not to mention vendors selling stuff. I belong to Philosophy Club and I also like to go to the Mittlemen Gallery when there is a showing.
Bang for the buck Tuition has raised amazingly high since I started going to PSU in 2003 and managed to get two bachelors degrees. Students are nickeled and dimed for miscellaneous fees, student rec fees, and stuff that has to do with PSU's constant expansion. We don't see what the fees actually go to. If I could get some of the fee money back, I would be happy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Mezanine is pretty neat when you see it for the first time.
Great for these types of students Self-directed, commuters, hippies, semi-intelligent, liberal, okay with online learning
Campus Safety I was being stocked one term and they took it very seriously. It's a very safe/secure campus. There are phones you can pick up throughout the campus and it is very regularly patrolled by campus security and police. PSU takes all physical and sexual threats seriously.

Tips for prospective students Definitely visit the campus before making a decision.
Academic Rigor Not so sure about this area, but they do have a very unique freshman academic program, as well as a very good honors program.
Dorm Life The dorm I visited was amazing. Very comfortable - definitely not like your traditional college dorm. It also places you within minutes of the city and everything on campus.
Food and Dining Lots of great eating options on campus. I believe my tour guide said there were something like eight Starbucks on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The Portland State University allows students to have double or more majors as many as possible. The school serves many subjects and programs. The school cares students' health.
Tips for prospective students The Portland State University is in the Portland downtown. The tranportation system is great to commute to the school from my home.
Academic Rigor I enjoy studying because I learn a lot. Also, I can do double major and one minor. If I have more time and money, I want to study as many as I can.
Dorm Life I do not have dorm life experience because I live in off-campus.
Food and Dining I usually pack my lunch because I do not want to buy fast food or non-organic food. I watch many documents for food that is why I choose the organic or health food. I sometimes buy food at the school cafe, but the choice is not a lot.
What to do for fun The Portland State University music department offers many free concerts or discount for students. If I have a time, I go to the concerto. Also, I enjoy swimming or exercising at the school gym because it is free for the students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school is in the downtown. Sometimes, I hear a lot of noise because people campaign when they have an issue such as Occupy the Portland. Sometimes, I hear an ambulance's, a police car's, or a fire truck's siren.
Clubs and Activities I do not join any clubs because I do not have enough time to have it. Many students announce in my classes and perform. They do great their clubs activities and help others a lot.
Greek Life I do not know about Greek life.
Campus Safety The school has the security system, but it is not enough because the school is in the downtown. Many homeless people walk around the school.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Portland State University is an awesome school! You can have all of your administrative needs met on the first floor of Neuberger Hall. Classes are challenging, and the professors genuinely care about your success.
Tips for prospective students Bring a little cash just in case you get hungry; there are wonderful food carts on the park block that runs in the middle of campus. Don't be afraid if you are a returning student. Many students here are returning students and the atmosphere is welcoming.
Academic Rigor I have chosen by degree in speech and hearing sciences. Classes were challenging, but with hard work, I was able to succeed with flying colors.
Dorm Life I lived outside of campus, but I had a friend who lived in a dorm. There were plenty of student activities to keep her out of her dorm from music concerts in the park blocks, free lectures, and career days.
Food and Dining If you walk a couple of blocks north to fourth avenue, you will see a myriad of food cards that serve delicious foods from around the world. Also, there are more than enough eateries around campus to satisfy ones hunger on a student's budget.
What to do for fun Head to the student recreation center to join an exercise class that interests you. There are clubs on campus that have daily activities, like the running club. Portland also has a great music culture; head north to Couch street and check out the bars and music talent.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences A varied university experience with small to medium class sizes, but a larger overall population. Great location for those who love larger cities, though getting from building to building can be a pain if your classes are on opposite ends of campus. Some facilities have been updated or renovated, but others could use some work.
Tips for prospective students Always ask around or look at reviews online before choosing a certain class or professor-- some professors are wonderful and go great with everyone, others repeatedly get bad reviews, so you'll want to shop around in order to get the best experience. If you schedule classes close together, be sure you have time to get from building to building or risk being late. When it comes to class descriptions, you don't always get exactly what you're expecting, so that is another thing to research, as different professors focus on different things within the same course.
Academic Rigor I'd say this is right in the middle-- some classes required a lot of effort, others not so much. There's still a lot of the busy work present in university that one might expect more in K-12 education, though this depends on the course/professor and other classes definitely have a lot of thought provoking, educational work that is worthwhile.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms myself because I can't afford the expense, but from what I've of other's dorms they are in okay condition. Some are right on campus, others are further away.
Food and Dining I've only eaten in the dining hall a few times, and that food is alright, but there are many places around campus to eat besides the dining hall. If you live in dorms as a Freshman, you are required to purchase a meal plan, so keep that in mind. For those who don't want to eat there, many restaurants and food carts are nearby or within campus buildings. You get not only chain places like Subway, Chipotle, McDonalds, and Starbucks, but authentic Thai food, cafés, and a lot more if you just take a moment to look around.
What to do for fun If the weather is nice, the Park Blocks are a great place to take a walk, eat lunch, or chat with your friends. The Portland Art Museum is also nearby, and PSU's campus is on the MAX line if you feel like going further and exploring Pioneer Square, which has many great restaurants nearby and usually has some sort of event going on. The rec centre facilities are great and I'd definitely recommend signing up for a few PE classes, which range from swimming, soccer, and weight lifting to tango, hip hop, and swing classes.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students utilizing the cities excellent public transit is a must, especially for commuting students. this knowledge makes is easier and more pleasurable going to and fro campus. once on campus, there are many utilities to maximize academic success; private study rooms, study groups per class, tutors and single-credit help classes specific for each class may be available. do not hesitate to search and ask for help.
Academic Rigor all dependent on class load and degree objective, the classes maintain a high sense of standard and a good work load as class level increases. it should be notes, students get what they put into the class; if you do the minimum reading and work, minimum knowledge will be gained. a class may not seem 'challenging' so make it worth your while with a little extra work.
Dorm Life having not lived in the dorms on campus, i cannot say how the living arrangements are, but i will give them an average rating for the location directly on campus in downtown portland and apparent cleanliness inside and out.
Food and Dining portland is known for the best food. period. located downtown of this beautiful city, portland state university is not far from fantastic food cart fare, cheap eats and restaurants that keep your mouth a-watering. on-campus food lacks slightly in this area, as in it's a better bet to explore outside the cafeteria. a notable mention is the economic food-for-thought café.
Campus Safety reports of any 'incidents' are required by law to be sent to students. these have been few and far between and the campus is a tight area with few dark areas even at night. they make and effort to put safety alarms in the most questionable areas.

Academic Rigor going to college is hard in itself. the classes are a bit difficult, but there is a lot of help for you as well. it's really up to you to succeed in your classes, you have to take the extra time to study, finish homework on time, and to relax!
Dorm Life living in the dorms your first year, is highly recommended! it's a fun experience where you get to be away from home and meet many people. you are closer to campus as well, so in between classes you have your room to go back to sleep or relax instead of sitting in the lobbies of buildings where it's a bit tedious.
Food and Dining okay, our main dining hall isn't the best, but it has it's day where it's just flat out delicious! you get tired of always having the same option, but don't worry they occasionally change it up. however, the options located around throughout campus are some of the bests, and there are many options!

I would rate higher, but I believe education should be free.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Because the school calls for students to take university studies classes you end up having to take some classes that are completely outside of your major. For me I took Women's Studies and I'm really enjoying it. It's a class would have never tried otherwise but it has become my favorite. And it's little things like this that makes this school interesting.
Am enjoying being here I'm a student who lives on campus and thought that I'd never like it, but it turns out that it's really nice. It's never real loud around here and there's always something to do. I came from a small town where you had to drive everywhere to get to things to do. Here everything is with walking distance. The school itself has its own movie theater, game room and bowling alley. It has it's own pub that features Rogue Brewing Company's Portland State Ale, the Farmer's Market is in the cent of campus every Saturday and there are live concerts held on campus usually once a week featuring any type of music you could want.
Bang for the buck It's a great place, the biggest trick is making sure that get what you want out of it. The issue I always see is people come here expecting the streets to be paved on gold and their destiny will be dropped in their lap. If you want your education to be worth something, you have to do the work that it calls for. With that being said, PSU has the tools needed to help students to achieve it, they just need to strive for it.
Tips for prospective students Be patient, but be diligent. Things move at a Portland pace here and there's a lot of students to get through. Do your best to stand out, but don't give up if your initial efforts aren't perfect.
Great for these types of students This place is great for everyone be it nerd, artist, hipster, jock or anywhere in between. There's a little bit of something for everyone here.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I'm excited to start my first semester here at this college. I've heard a lot about their criminal-justice programs, and I don't think I will be disappointed.
Will enjoy being here I love Portland, so I'll be happy to be staying in a dorm there.
Bang for the buck Uh, the dorms are expensive... I haven't taken a look at the INSIDE of them yet, but this university costs just as much as another out-of-state university that I was considering. (I am an Oregon resident.)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My professor's are amazing at what they do. They know the way to get their students to learn and they are all very easy to work with for questions about the material.
Am enjoying being here It is amazing being right in the heart of the city. The school has a lot to offer too!
Bang for the buck It really is worth the tuition and fees. They are really easy to work with when dealing with scholarships and loans.
Tips for prospective students Get your applications and materials in early, otherwise you could have to deal with the rush of applications around the due date. Also, GO TO YOUR professors' office hours. They are really important and are a great way to get to know your professors and how they like to do things.
Great for these types of students Students looking to expand their knowledge of many different types of things, diversity.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot I have only taken one class at this university, but I learned a lot in that class. It was BA 101 with Hirons.
Did enjoy being here The class I took was a night class and was four hours long. Make sure it is worth it to you to stay until the class is over. I did, but students that did not had a harder time with the quizzes.
Bang for the buck Portland State is a great university from what I can tell, but if you live on the dorm, you are paying double than if you live at home with your parents, and the classes are about $20 per credit than a community college.
Tips for prospective students Do not forget to take into account fees like transportation fees, textbook fees, backpack, calculator or scantron fees. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Scholarships are how I could afford to attend a class at PSU!
Great for these types of students PSU is very urban. Be prepared to walk everywhere you go. The streetcar is great, and free for most of the area it runs through.

Categories Rating Comments Will enjoy being here While I've yet to visit this school, several of my friends who have, and whose opinions I trust greatly, say that they have a great campus that is very beautiful and have very attractive academics. ;) That being said I can't wait to attend :)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Being here at Portland State isn't just about learning academics, it's about learning how to cope in different environments. I feel like while attending PSU I can learn more about myself and how I can improve on my skills when it comes to being out on my own. Along with the personal learning, I can say that the professors here are very good at what they do. I haven't had one class where I felt like I wasn't learning anything.
Am enjoying being here I love the environment that PSU provides. Not only is this a successful college, but it's a major part of the Portland community. I love knowing that I can be apart of the city while working towards my degree.
Bang for the buck No matter what college a student attends, money will always be a concern. While being here at Portland State, I have never felt as though I wasn't going to be able to find a way to pay for my tuition. With financial aid and the massive amounts of scholarships that are offered, not attending because of money issues isn't a problem. Each and every class is full of information, and the professors are more than willing to give you the assistance you need. I would say that I'm paying a little amount compared to the amount of schooling and attention I am receiving.
Great for these types of students Portland State is great for all different types of students. We have a strong, diverse, and driven student body here at PSU. If you are the type of person who likes to have options, who likes to get involved, or who wants a good education, then PSU is the place for you!

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here I love Portland, so I love the school's location. You have to like the urban, downtown feel of Portland to enjoy this school though.
Bang for the buck As far as general ed requirements go, a community college would be cheaper, but PSU is a great school for graduate studies.
Tips for prospective students PSU has so many different majors (and minors). Read through all the options before you decide because you may find a major/minor that is perfect for you that you didn't know was available.
Great for these types of students This school is perfect for Portland-lovers. Great for those who like big schools in a big city. PSU is great for anyone interested in one of their graduate programs--no matter if you plan to pursue a Bachelor's at PSU or not.
