    Tips for prospective students

This is a good local school for those living in the Greater San Jose Area. Many of my friends plan on going here. It offers many different majors, although it is known primarily for its Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Art, Music, and Dance programs. It is a solid school. I don't think you could go wrong at this school.

Great for these types of students

Urban, local, social, low to mid GPAs, culturally and ethnically diverse.

    - Lower division General Ed classes have always been pretty easy. You get what you put in. You want to learn a lot, study, and get a solid A+ or if you want to put in little work, study right before major tests and get a B-/C+ then you can do that too. Teachers have ALWAYS been really motivational, great advice for life whether or not you are actually learning anything about actual class material.

    - I'm a journalism major. Once I've gotten into classes IN MY MAJOR my opinion of the school and the environment is totally different. Journalism department has a ton of inspired, awesome teachers - minus a few oldies (Tillinghast) that are horrid. Students are also helpful/nice/talkative. Being in my department has definitely made me love the school ten times more. :)

Awesome place for commuter students who work. I happen to work downtown, so it's got a pretty central location. The campus is decent enough - pretty kick back, especially if you enjoy an occasional conversation with a crazy homeless person or have a close encounter with the ridiculous amount of squirrels. :) - if you go here, you'll know EXACTLY what I mean.

Our library is pretty banging. Huge, (also a public library) TONS of quite space to study/entire building made of windows so it's not a boring place to study either.

Great school if your from the area... however... i still recommend going away to school if your local - IF it's manageable. I know I regret it.... you only have these years once, do them right!

    Bang for the buck

I think tuition is ridiculous at any school. I've never opened a book for ANY of my classes (so if you want - go ahead and save a few bucks there). That being said.... teachers/classes are decent. YES there are a few shitty teachers - you will probably have one each semester. BUT a majority are pretty decent - as long as you remember they are human too, they are there to teach you, and you RESPECT them.

    Tips for prospective students

    - If your a local - be sure you check out other schools. Not saying this isn't a good school (especially journalism, in the top 10 in the state), BUT just dont' regret not going away, like myself.

    - Hang out on campus
    - Join a club
    - Get involved
    - Enjoy the concerts and such in the Spartan Complex
    - Get ready for a bunch of marijuanna clubs handing out their business cards/deals around campus! =P
    - 30 in from the beach/Santa Cruz Boardwalk - GO OFTEN!
    - 45 min from San Francisco - see the Golden Gate Bridge and other historical sights. Great shopping/food there. SEE ALCATRAZ

Great for these types of students

    * Commuter
    * Someone who doesn't NEED clubs, scene in SJ isn't to great - prefers Frat parties or Bars and such.
    * People who prefer to keep to themselves
    * The hard workers and the stoner slackers.
    * honestly, there seems to be a place for everyone at SJSU

Hello there! I am currently a freshman at SJSU and I am enrolled in Economics 1B (Micro Economics), NuFS 9 (Human Nutrition), MUSC 10A (Music Appreciation), MATH 30 (Calculus I), and MATH 30W (Calculus Workshop). This is a total of 14 units. The professors are really nice and dedicate their teaching to students who wants to understand the concept and subject. Take my NuFS 9 class, for example. We learn about how the body absorb the types of food we eat and how the body function through the amount and variation of food we consume. Although there are a lot of information to absorb within an hour and 15 minutes, it feels like you have been enlightened! This class has influenced me to eating smart and healthy. Another class that is a good example is Calculus. Calculus AB AP did not fit in my schedule in high school and I was forced to take it in college. Because my friends who took it previously said calculus was hard, it made my frightened about college level calculus. To my surprise, the professor does a really good job in teaching the theorems and rules of calculus. It is a good school for those who are more comfortable with the Semester system!

SJSU has a lot to offer! There are many sororities and fraternities and student-run organizations. Although I am too busy to join any clubs, they all look appealing to me. There is even a Quidditch Club (yes, Harry Potter, quidditch)! There's also an event center where many concerts and special events take place and you can buy your tickets via ticketmaster in front of the center.
During the first couple weeks of school, there were so many events happening around campus and special college major events for freshmen to feel welcomed to SJSU. I am a bit shy of a person and my school spirit is very low, but SJSU did a successful job in making me feel at home.
The campus is very beautiful and peaceful. There are many cafes on and off campus, so you can basically eat what you feel like without having to stray far away from campus.
The fun doesn't stop there! Apart from on-campus luxury, there are many things to see in downtown. There are places such as the Tech Museum, an art museum, the HP pavilion, San Jose Conventional Center (the place where Fanime is held annually), the Children's Discovery Museum and more! SJSU is located where all the fun and excitement gather. So don't miss this opportunity for easy access adventures!

    Bang for the buck

Even though SJSU is a CSU school, it offers more than just a CSU. Its amazing engineering, business, and nursing program prepares students for their career. Located at the heart of Silicon Valley, engineers are provided with many advantages to job/internship opportunities. And if you are living at home and commuting, you save a LOT of money from dorming and food.

    Tips for prospective students

When signing up for your orientation, if you are conditionally accepted, I suggest you to register for the orientation ASAP. Due to budget cuts, the school has put a unit cap on everyone so student can only enroll in 14 units MAX until the cap is lifted. To get the classes you want, the earlier your orientation date is, the better!

Great for these types of students

SJSU is known for their ENGINEERING, BUSINESS and NURSING majors. Other majors are also great too!
SJSU is also great for students who wants to live near home, around San Jose, Fremont, Cupertino, SF, Union City, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, etc.
Dorms are also available to ANYBODY, even though you live near SJ ^_^

Throughout the time that I have attended San Jose State, I have been able to have knowledgable, helpful teachers who can relate to the topics their teach through their past real-life experiences. The teachers are always available to arrange meetings outside of class for extra help and further discussion of topics.

    Am enjoying being here

San Jose State offers many extracurricular activities along with an extensive network of students, staff, and alumni. I have been able to stay consistently active in a fraternity, club, and on-campus job. Through those organizations, I have been able to meet people throughout many industries that have helped my professional development.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of tuition highly reasonable compared to other public colleges and much more affordable compared to private colleges. For the most part, all of the teachers are highly knowledgable and approachable thus creating a great learning environment. The hands-on teaching styles are great being that it keeps the students active in the lessons being taught. The reason for a 4 of 5 is due to the high cost of living on campus. The cost of living on campus is easily two times the cost of tuition and is causes most of the financial hardship.

    Tips for prospective students

Highly suggest visiting each college of interest before accepting any offer. Meeting the students and staff on campus is a great way to see how the college experience will be at that campus. Also look for a college that will be able to develop more than just your academic portfolio.

Great for these types of students

Students that are interested in startup companies and entrepreneurship will be at an advantage attending San Jose State University because of it is located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Due to the location, many opportunities arrise to meet and listen to speeches from top industry leaders. The Engineering and Business departments at San Jose State have a true advantage compared to other school due to the close work opportunities and hands-on courses.

I have taken English 1A, Latino Identity (psycology), Remedial Math, and Intro to Sociology. English 1A is the GE English class required for undergrad students. My teacher, Mr. Mujal, was amazing. It was a small class of 25, and he made sure everyone was involved with each discussion. Since he was also a history major, many of our essay topics were about political leaders. Apart from learning about political leaders, we also learned alot about ourselves. We had to write about a controversial topic. We all had a passion for these topics. In Latino Id, i learned all about Latinos across the world. My teacher taught us about many of the psychological disorders Latinos face and what we can do to help these people overcome them. We also learned about the roots of many these disorders. This class was the most interesting of all. Remedial Math is where I learned basic math skills. In Intro to Soc, my teacher taught me how to examine the simplest of things and question them.

San Jose State not only offers great education, but also is dedicated to making sure students have the most fun they can. So far, they have passed out free movie tickets, held ice skating, movie nights, a homecoming carnival, and many other fun things. Also for freshman, SJSU offers Frosh Start in which Freshman move in early and get a chance to meet other Freshman. They offer icebreakers, a tour, a dance, and etc.
SJSU is not only fun, but it is also a beautiful school. The buildings are all close to each other. Also the weather is very unique. At SJSU, you experience both the sun and the heavy winds. When it is sunny, we have a large outdoors swimming pool.
We are also close to alot of great restaurants and a lot of malls.

    Bang for the buck

Since Cal states are experiencing a lot of budget cuts, it is extremely difficult to get the classes you want or need. Other than this, I believe that SJSU is affordable.

Also if you have a meal plan, you get unlimited access to the cafeteria (unlike many other schools).

We also get VTA passes. With these passes we can ride any bus or light rail in San Jose for free. You can go anywhere from the mall to surrounding cities.

    Tips for prospective students

On the first day of classes, you are given a green sheet. All the test dates and assignments are written on it. Your teachers will not remind you what will be due or when you have a test- they expect you to know.
Also, sign up for the first orientation. I signed up for the last one and all of the classes were taken!

Great for these types of students

-like both sunny and windy weather
    -intimate class settings
    -involved student body
    -large campus
    -outgoing
    -appreciate beautiful landscape
    -love to swim or run
    -like to go shopping
    -adventurous

    Am learning a lot

I'm a first generation college student. I came to San Jose State with the knowledge that my A.P courses gave me. I migrated to this great country six years ago with one and only task--my American Dream. Despite the big push from intriguing High School classes I found myself in the cave of dealing with remedial courses. Despite this challenging factor that got on my way I strive hard enough to complete these requirements in order to advance with my college life. I experienced ups and downs. I come from a very low-income family, hence, financially I've struggled to go on and complete my goals. I don't want to let down my family as they look forward for a better future for myself. My family has noticed the fact that we need the money; so came to the conclusion to get a first-time job on campus. College life is about getting to know yourself in deeper way, a fresh-start where you become a new person. Independence, responsibility and success become our best friends. We learned the differences between having too much fun and hitting the books. We come across the point where we realize that we're there with only one priority; a college education.

    Am enjoying being here

San Jose State University is a campus with a lot of resources to take advantage of, its academic resources, extra-curricular activities, and environment makes it a almost perfect campus. I took advantage of their academic resources such as tutoring and academic advising. Since I'm a Engineering major, the engineering department is great, they have their own academic advising and are very helpful in regard to you academic life.
Personally I've joined a cultural fraternity, a student organization that has helped me academically, socially and personally. I encourage prospective students to socialized enough in order to become familiar with their new surroundings, to gain that confidence that will guide them to success.

    Bang for the buck

When I stepped into San Jose State University I was nervous, my confidence was very low. This factor is common since we're first-year college students we feared the money issue. the budget-cuts get on our way. Money conflicts are closed enough to make us doubt our success, nonetheless, we have our minds set; we are there to earn our education. An education that my parents weren't able to receive and that now I have set for my future.

Ido admit, because of the budget cuts, it is a little hard to get the classes you'd need for your major. But, I think that's happening with a lot of state colleges this semester. Besides that, all the teachers I've had teach really well and- unless you fall behind- are easy to follow and keep up with.

    Am enjoying being here

I grew up in San Jose, so when I decided to go to San Jose State, I didn't expect too much. But, it's a really enjoyable experience. The campus is pretty and there are a lot of activities going on. There are clubs on campus, movie nights in the campus square and different events hat can keep you really busy. Plus, an event center is right on campus so you can see different concerts as well. Around the school, there are different fast food places- Indian food, Asian food, taquerias, pizza , pitas, quiznos, Starbucks (yay!) and of course McDonald's so it's not hard to find food (VERY important for a college student)

    Bang for the buck

When you pay tution, you get a lot of benefits that work around the school. Once you pay tuition, you get an eco pass for the local transportation, free gym access, te ability to use the services around the school- such as the health center. Plus, once you're a student, you have the ability o check out laptops and the nearby library. People that aren't students at the school don't get this benefit because it's specifically for the university students.

    Tips for prospective students

USE THE SERVICES AROUND CAMPUS. Some classes require that you go to MUSE workshops- classes tat help freshman adjust to the college life- and LARC, the tutoring center. So, look into it and try to get your hours here. Plus the health center has a free nutritionist and a pharmacy. The services on campus are pretty cheap. And there's really cheap bowling alley and arcade in the student union, computer repair and rental... lots of different things.

Great for these types of students

Students that like being near a city would love this school because it is downtown

I feel that I am actually learning as San Jose State University and not wasting money just to say I achieved a degree. There are always some classes that feel unnecessary, but for each boring class there seem to be two interesting, worthwhile classes!

    Am enjoying being here

I am loving the college life as well as the atmosphere at the school. Some have said that SJSU is considered a party school, which worried me a little bit, but it all depends on the crowd you expose yourself to. I chose a different crowd and I am loving it! The campus is gorgeous and the faculty is very friendly as far as I've seen.

    Bang for the buck

The CSU system is probably the cheapest in CA making it the only option for me, but the cost is on the rise. Budget cuts have increased fees, but this is an issue at all of the CSU schools. There are many ways to cut back on what the CSU system estimates it will cost you to attend college. For example, I was able to get 5 of my 9 required texts from the library!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to explore all of your options before committing to a school. As a transfer student, I was able to find off campus housing to cut expenses dramatically. Check out assist.org to look at the different majors offered and what classes will transfer from your current community college to get ahead of the game. Make sure to check all the deadlines and get your transcripts and application in early so you won't have as much of a chance of slipping through the cracks. This way, if you do, you will still have time to contact the University and work things out.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for those interested in business, engineering, music and dance. I found that this school was one of the few in the CSU program with a decent dance program. Dance is my passion and the reason that I chose SJSU.

There's something new to learn each day; in class and out of class. The students here are quite diverse though most look alike in so many ways.

    Am enjoying being here

For the most part, this campus has become my new home. It has it's down times, like when a majority of people are gone on the weekends because they live near or in San Jose.

    Bang for the buck

I believe that these prices are ridiculous. They raised tuition and more classes were impacted than ever before. So, not only are you paying more, you're also not always able to get the classes you were hoping for.

    Tips for prospective students

Work smarter, not harder. The first month of school will go by faster than you can imagine. Keep a schedule of when you're going to study and make sure you go to all your classes! Oh yeah, the food in the Dining Commons isn't all that bad; it's pretty good in fact. But, I suggest you stick to the 5-Day meal plan and wing it on the weekends because you'll end up doing that even with your 7-Day meal plan.

Great for these types of students

    Open-Minded students.

    In three sentences

san jose state university is one of the prides of the silicon valley and offers a commuter school feel in the middle of a big city. we have a wide range of majors offered here and the population of students is super diverse. there are tons of groups to get involved in, and opportunities to study abroad.

    Tips for prospective students

take your lower division ges at a community college. it's much cheaper and offers the same education. transfer your units here once you can be considered an upperclassman and take courses for your major. but make sure that your community college classes transfer - use resources like assist.org or meet with an adviser and get a signature so that you don't take classes that won't satisfy the requirements, which can slow you down if you have to repeat a course because you thought you had already satisfied the requirement. also, parking is terrible, so carpool, use the park and ride lot, get dropped off, take the light rail, ride your bike, or walk to campus, and make it worth your while by stacking classes on a couple days a week.

    Academic Rigor

the general education courses are a joke, so you can take them anywhere and get the same (if not higher) quality education. once you're in a program - like nursing or engineering - your classmates seem a whole lot smarter and what you're learning should actually apply to what you want to do.

    Dorm Life

the bricks, usually the freshman dorms, are disgusting, so if you have the money, try for cvc. that's a much nicer, apartment-style dorm (still mostly freshman). joe west is ok, but doesn't have air conditioning, so when it's hot, you're out of luck. that's generally where sophomores live. cvb is very nice and is geared toward upperclassmen because it is much more apartment-style and has a full kitchen. unlike the above options, many of these dorm rooms have 4 single bedrooms (but there are a few three-bedroom doubles available that are home to 6 people at a time), a common room, and bathrooms in the suite. cva is home to faculty and staff and many graduate students. it offers studios and apartments, and many rooms have small balconies. the campus village (cvc, cvb, and cva) has a much safer general feeling about it.

    Food and Dining

the food in the dining commons (dc) is pretty terrible, although they have brought in companies like jamba juice and pete's coffee in recent years, so it's getting better. try to avoid getting a meal plan if you can. it's expensive and the food is pretty bad for you, plus they don't have specialty areas to accommodate people with dietary issues, such as those with celiac's disease (who cannot eat gluten). some of the dorm rooms come with meal plans in their contracts (the bricks, for example), so you get stuck paying for it even if you don't eat it. the options in the student union are good for lunch time meals: subway, panda express, jamba juice, and a pretty decent food court. food around the edges of campus is pretty good - the popular favorites being flames, peanuts, and la vic's (la victoria).

    What to do for fun

the nw corner of the university campus is located right in the middle of downtown, so there's a decent night life as far as bars and club activities go. there's also a movie theater that offers cheap student tickets on wednesday nights located right at the paseo de san antonio light rail station, and plenty of restaurants, from ethnic thai, indian, or greek food, fancy sea food, to 'healthy' to-go options like pita pit. on campus, aside from the bowling alley, there is a fitness center to work out in, and a few open grassy areas that people frequently kick around a ball on, toss frisbees across, and even set up quidditch fields on. the football field is located about a mile south of main campus, so if you don't feel like walking to the games, there are shuttles running frequently for the bigger sports (for less-popular games like soccer, you have to get yourself there, though).

    Bang for the buck

it's a state school, so it's meant to be a good deal, but with the budget cuts, the price goes up every year. we had furlough days for a semester to try to offset the increase, but they didn't continue it, so i guess that wasn't the most effective strategy. most people i've met do not graduate in the standard 4 years, so it's more costly when you can't get a seat in all the classes you're trying to register for each semester, and can slow you down.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is a bowling alley in the student union (the ugliest building you will ever see, other than the architecture building at cal, but it's being rebuilt now), and the mlk jr. library is a beautiful, impressive 8-story tall building that is a joint college and community library with wonderful architecture, lighting, views of the city and campus, and themed displays throughout each floor. it's my favorite building on campus. also, the outdoor pool, aka the aquatic center, is the largest heated outdoor saltwater pool in [northern] california, and boasts 2 underwater hockey courts (yes, this is a sport - check it out: underwater hockey) and 2 diving boards (1 meter and 3 meter).

Great for these types of students

there are a lot of first-generation college students here, a lot of people who learned english as a second (or other non-primary) language, and a lot of people who receive financial aid. however, generally speaking, students here do not carry on the academic conversations in their spare time that you might hear on a walk in the sun through a more prestigious school, such as uc berkeley.

    Clubs and Activities

there is an abundance of clubs on campus, with lots of cultural and religious groups. we have business fraternities and volunteer groups and an adventure club, in addition to many clubs/groups for each major. the event center on campus holds lots of popular concerts for the community, this semester being the stage for kelly clarkson and drake, among many others.

    Greek Life

we have an active greek life, with frat row just a block off campus. they host many events in their fraternity/sorority houses as well as fundraisers and other things in the community.

    Campus Safety

while the campus and dorms are not plopped in the safest part of the city, the school has many emergency blue light telephones stationed around campus from which you can call the campus police and even ask for an escort or free night shuttle (the shuttle runs a few blocks off campus in every direction).

    Academic Rigor

make sure you look up your professors on ratemyprofessors.com. a lot of professors here have a lot of passion in what they teach.

    Dorm Life

depends what building you live in. the bricks is definitely the most social, and it's really not as bad as people make it seem. has the most closet/storage space.

    Food and Dining

usually have the same food everyday/every night. there's pizza, burgers, burritos, and salad on the daily. some of the food is good, some it bad, but it is a college cafeteria so you can't expect five star dining.

    What to do for fun

most people like to go to frat parties, but most of the parties here aren't that great. some just drink in the dorms (which you're not supposed to) or go into the city. there's a lot of good restaurants around, but other than that there's not a lot to do in the city. and a lot of people like to do hookah, a lot of hookah bars around.

    Greek Life

a lot of people join fraternities and sororities, and you usually have to know someone to get on the guest lists for their parties.

    Campus Safety

never go around campus alone at night. there has been a lot of shootings, and sexual assaults around here. having pepper spray or a pocket knife wouldn't be a bad idea.

    Am learning a lot

So far the classes I've taken here have been interesting and fun. The professors can range from quiet and reserved to loud and interactive, but overall my experience here has been great when it comes to learning. Because this is college, you have to be able to push yourself and be able to work independently and the professors expect this of you. However, SJSU provides great tutoring services if you're struggling.

My major is Animation/Illustration, and I'd have to say I've learned the most and had the most fun in the classes required for this major. The professors here know so much about working in the field and they really push you to be your best.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy the campus life here. I live off campus, but because I am in the Animation/Illustration major and I am in the club (SHM), I am on campus a lot because there are a lot of activities year round. This goes for many other clubs. There are so many extra-curricular activities/events all the time. Plus, SJSU is right in the middle of downtown San Jose and there are tons of places to eat and hang out off campus as well. The campus is small and you don't need a bike or a skateboard to get to class on time. Overall, I really enjoy the environment of SJSU.

    Bang for the buck

This is a state school so it's much cheaper than a lot of private schools or Universities of California, though prices are going up because of the infamous budget cuts. I'm from a middle to low income family, but even so we are still able to afford the tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you improve your study/work habits. This goes for all college students. If you learn to balance your social life, school, and/or work, you will be set and you will ease through school.

Great for these types of students

If you want to become an Animation/Illustration Major, I strongly suggest attending SJSU. Though this school may not be extremely famous for Animation/Illustration, it is greatly under-represented. It's one of the best schools for this major on the West Coast. I'd have to say I'm happy I came here for this major. The students, the professors, the classes... everything is so amazing! If you come here for Animation/Illustration, you will make friends for life, memories you'll never forget, and be presented with great job opportunities without paying for the private school tuition.

I am currently a second year at San Jose State University and I must say that I have definitely learned a lot. The professors here, for the most part, are all very helpful. They have office hours that students can go to during their own time to either clarify an assignment or discuss with the professor about their progress in the course. Not only that, but students are constantly being challenged to do better. Professors here actually wants student to succeed and become professionals in the future. Personally, I would recommended students to take Chem 1A and Chem 1B with Dr. Singmaster if they are interested in the science field. I am a Biology major and this course taught me the basics of Chemistry that I might not have learned in high school and how science can apply to our every day life. This definitely means a lot to me because most students question how will the things we learn now be affective in our future? Well, I can tell you that all the classes I've took and the knowledge I've gained from these professors are all useful information that I can apply to in my future.

    Am enjoying being here

San Jose State University is a very enjoyable campus because it is small enough to get to where you want quickly, but big enough to allow you to enjoy that college experience. The campus have many clubs, sororities, fraternities, and student involvement programs for students to get to know one another outside of classes.

    Bang for the buck

The cost for attending any universities can be a bit pricey, but there is always financial aid to assist low-income family. Or if anything, there are scholarships online or grants that are available for students to apply for. I have encounter problems making payments before during my first year, and I went to the Financial Aid office to speak with a counselor there. They gave me several options on how to pay off my payment on-time without being dropped from courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Some of my tips for prospective students would be to talk to their counselor/ advisor during their first year if they are unsure of what they want to be or might be having trouble declaring a major. Also, if students decide to dorm on campus, they can always ask their RA (residential assistant) for anything that is related to their living situation. My last bit of advice is that due to impaction, students might want to declare their major before 60 units!

Great for these types of students

I am from Antioch, which is about one hour drive away from San Jose. I would say it is the perfect location if you want to stay away from home, but still be able to go back whenever you feel overwelmed about school in general.

Students from So-Cal may or may not like it at this University because they often experienced home sick half way through the semester of their first year. But after awhile, it trains them to become more independent. So there is definitely pros/cons about how Nor-Cal and So-Cal students would rate this University.

    Am learning a lot

At any college, the student determines how much he or she takes away from a class. Overall, my experience has been pretty good. Most of my teachers were incredibly passionate about what they taught which made the class much more enjoyable. They always encourage students to visit them during office hours to get a one-on-one treatment.

    Am enjoying being here

San Jose is in a great location! Not only are we in the Silicon Valley surrounded by prominent and progressive businesses, but we are also right in downtown which offers a wide variety of food and entertainment.

    Bang for the buck

As a state school, prices are moderate compared to others. We have been hit with recent pay increases, but the education is almost the exact same to private universities.

    Tips for prospective students

I would definitely encourage new students to get involved. Whether it is a club sport or a board position in your dorm, the connections and relationships you make are priceless. Try to get off campus and explore the surrounding areas. You won't be disappointed!

Great for these types of students

The majority of students are commuters. We're known for our Engineering and Business programs, but I have found the campus to be a diverse and accepting community.

    Am learning a lot

Depending on your teacher, you will learn a lot of useful tips to succeed in college and in life. Like any school in the nation, the student is the person that will decide if they learn a lot or a little. The teachers provide adequate amount of information and the the curriculum is filled with information but then again, you won;t learn unless you want to. I feel the information here is crucial and with every teacher, you learn more about the grading styles at the school.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many events always occurring on campus with music and booths everywhere. Fraternities and sororities also help in these events. The location of the school is the downside because it is in the middle of downtown San Jose and their are homeless people walking around. The people are friendly and will help you if you get lost.

    Bang for the buck

Because of the recession, people are paying more for less. There is hard time finding classes and the school is trying its best to help the student but there is a lot of competition. I am in an impacted major so its harder to find classes. Also, they are building a new student union for the students so money is going to the new building.

    Tips for prospective students

There are websites on the school website that help with choosing classes. If you go to this website,
    http://www.jsu07.com/ss/index.php
you choose your classes, your teachers, the times and it will calculate all the possible schedule outcomes. IF you click on the teacher, it will bring you to rate my professor and it really helps up the class choosing process.

    Am learning a lot

The education is great but it is more book based and not much thinking out of the box type learning.

    Am enjoying being here

The people here are very friendly. There is alot to do such as clubs and frats. However, sometimes people are busy studying or working.

    Bang for the buck

It is extremely expensive especially now that they lowered the amount of class time and classes you can take making it harder for you to get classes you want.

    Tips for prospective students

There are little events during the semesters such as time management events or teacher pet peeve events that will help you adjust to college life. Attending these will help and can be found in the calender section of the school website.

The environment at SJSU is very clean, and comfortable to be in. The people at SJSU are very friendly and helpful. For students who do not care about brand names, SJSU is the place to go to since the advisers at SJSU are great at their job and can handle any questions.

    Tips for prospective students

SJSU provides free VTA transportation for students living in the San Jose area. The student bookstore provides huge discounts on books and other school materials so take advantage of the bookstore if student decides to go to SJSU.

    Academic Rigor

Since I have taken only 6 classes at SJSU I can't fully determine how rigorous the courses at SJSU are. However, out of the 6 classes I have taken, studying is require to obtain a decent grade in class. Attendance to lecture is highly important and recommended as well.

    Food and Dining

There are many places to go eat at SJSU. Surrounding the campus are various diners, restaurants and fast food places to go eat that are affordable at a college student rate. Even though the places to eat at SJSU lack the quality appearance, they make up for quality in their food.

    What to do for fun

San Jose State itself provide a bowling alley and pool tables for all SJSU students. At night there are musical performances and other activities to view. For students who enjoy viewing art, there Tech Museum and San Jose Art Museum is just around the block.

The downtown area is nice. The teachers are supportive, and want students to succeed. The only thing that I don't like is the crime rate.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't commute by bus everyday. Stay on campus in dorms. Try the food at surrounding venues especially Iguana's, La Victoria, and Psycho Donuts. Find friends and study buddies. Study during breaks. Utilize counseling, tutoring, and the computer labs. DO NOT be late turning in paperwork. Although they don't look at it til months later they won't accept late applications for anything. Use rate my professor.com. It can be pretty accurate. Leave time for parking!!!

Terrible school; horrible advising for new students especially those going into Physics or Math. You will not graduate in four years. You will pay more tuition every year for less - fewer classes, fewer sections, fewer supplies, fewer resources.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan out your four-year plan. Stick to it. Only get advising from your Major Advisor - general undergraduate advisors are useless. Don't fail a class, because you probably won't be able to take it again because everything is impacted and repeating students get last priority for entry into classes.

    Academic Rigor

Some teachers are passionate and genuine. Most are dispirited due to lack of decent pay and resources. Most students are idiots who still live with their parents, further discouraging teachers who would really want to try.

    Dorm Life

    What to do for fun

    Bang for the buck

Every year, our fees and tuition are increased, and every year, we get less and less. Teachers who print out handouts do so on their own paper and ink and for their own money. You have to pay to have any administrator print out forms for you - it's $1 at the Student Services Center to get a form printed for you if you didn't print it at home. Every major is impacted, classes are impossible to get into, and because of this a four year degree takes six, on average, and every year the school gets worse and you pay more.

Great for these types of students

People that like living at home. This is a commuter school.

san jose state is generally a clean campus with friendly students and teachers. however, i believe the students here lack school spirit merely because the as aren't able to fully reach out to their peers and encourage school spirit. many students are unaware of the countless school events they are able to attend because of the lack of publicity.

    Tips for prospective students

to get the scoop on major events and to be more involved, try to live on campus. students who stay in the dorms are first to know about certain events. joining various clubs, frats, and sororities is definitely a a way to get connected to the school. it is also a wise way of widening a network. being in clubs will introduce you to different kinds of people and may possibly open many doors.
plan ahead. when registering for classes, you must plan ahead. flip through the catalog and figure out what classes you need to take weeks before your registration date or else you will not get into the classes that you want and need.

    Academic Rigor

academic instructions will depend on the teacher. most teachers will be fair and will allow you to voice your concern on certain assignments merely because they want you to succeed. however, there are rare instances where your professor is a tyrant who will destroy your paper and will not let you do anything about it.

    Dorm Life

because of the rising college expenses, i personally am not able to afford to live on campus. however, if i had the opportunity to, i would definitely take it without hesitation. living on campus would change my college experience completely. i think all college students should dorm for at least one year to get the full college experience. of course, there are no parents there to tell you what to do and when to do it. living in the dorms would teach me how to be independent and how to manage my time wisely. it would also allow me to be informed on current events going on at school and other information that i wouldn't be exposed to if i was not living on campus.

    Food and Dining

sjsu is conveniently located at the heart of downtown san jose. luckily, there are plenty of great places with great food that will definitely satisfy your cravings after and in between classes. there is also a wide variety of places so you don't have to eat the same thing everyday (unless you want to). if you don't have time to walk off campus to find some food, you can never go wrong with the food court located inside the student union-- which also includes a wide variety of choices from chinese food, to mexican, or healthy choices like subway. the food court is my favorite place on campus!

    What to do for fun

if you are looking for a place to relax whether it's by yourself or with some friends, the music room is a great place to be. located on the second floor of the student union, the music room is exactly what it sounds like: a room that plays music. the djs have a very wide selection of music, ranging from soft hip hop to jazz. it's a very relaxing place that i often go to when i want to do homework or to hang out with some friends.

    Campus Safety

as a student at san jose university, you are able to sign up to receive text alerts through the sjsu emergency alert system. downtown san jose is not the safest place in the world, so when something happens, alert-sjsu will send you a text right away so you are informed about what is happening not only on campus, but within the community.

i always had the feeling that they felt so bad that tuition kept going up every year. they're very helpful so use their resources wisely! it will depend on your major whether or not the classes are hard or easy.

    Tips for prospective students

declare a major and a minor as soon as possible so that you're out much quicker! if you find any subject really interesting and fun, ask the professor whether or not they're involved in any research and if you can help. establish a relationship with your adviser-- you might need them later!

    Academic Rigor

it depends. many courses felt like ap classes from high school and many felt way easier or way harder. the history department, for example, is much harder and stricter than the english department. it all depends on the major.

    Dorm Life

it feels relatively unsafe, to be honest. if you have a lot of money, you'll be comfortable, and if you don't, you'll be miserable. but this is the case at any college so it's not so bad.

    Food and Dining

you're right in the middle of downtown san jose so you could eat anything anywhere!

    Bang for the buck

san jose state university is not just a commuter university. it is a university that offers an immense amount of opportunities for people. a school that is often overlooked should a considerable contender when searching for the right education.

    Tips for prospective students

do your research. before i selected to come to this school i took into consideration the majors, programs, social life, surrounding location, and a whole lot more. just because one part is great doesn't mean the whole will be, and vice-versa (and i mean that in a good and bad way).

    Academic Rigor

it is on a semester system which most people take advantage of but that doesn't imply for a person to slack off. stay on task, focus, and enjoy. also, it can vary depending on majors.

    Dorm Life

dorm system needs to be refined since the new requirement for first year freshman to live on campus. the dorms are not a five star hotel but what can you expect out of a college.

    Food and Dining

the dining commons is a buffet but once again it is not a featured restaurant. there is somewhat of a variety but the plans are a bit overpriced.

    Campus Safety

    Am learning a lot

I am currently a freshman at SJSU and This past semester I was enrolled in COMM 20 (Public Speaking), Moral issues, STATS 67, and ENG 1A. I definietly learned a lot in my COMM 20 class. My teacher was serious about what she was teaching and really cared about the students and if they passed or failed. I learned much in my English class too. Much of what I thought was wanted in a typical essay was wrong. In high school they teach you how to write a five paragraph essay if pointless because we do not learn in high school so english 1A definitely weaned me off of the five paragraph essay habit. This is a total of 12 units. The professors are really nice and dedicate their teaching to students who wants to understand the concept and subject. It is a good school for those who are more comfortable with the Semester system!

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love this school. I am from southern California so it is a while from home. So, if you are the type of person who can not stay away from family and NEED your family, it is possible to go home but for me it was not realistic. This is a great school to learn more about yourself and getting involved. You definitely learn how to manage your time, with friends school work and going out to have fun. There is always an opportunity to do something and it is always up to you to do it.

    Bang for the buck

Even though SJSU is a CSU school, it offers more than just a CSU. Its amazing engineering, business, and nursing program prepares students for their career. It has a really great music program and Occupational Therapy program (which is what I'm involved in! )

    Tips for prospective students

This is a good school for those who want to get involved. Especially if you live on campus, SJSU makes sure to always have events going and make sure you are in the know, just make sure you pay attention to the posters surrounding you! It offers many different majors, although it is known primarily for its Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Art, Music, and Dance programs. It is very great school. The one bad thing is if you are big on sports and a great fan, you need to work a little to get the crowd going.

    Am learning a lot

For my first semester at SJSU, I took Business 12, Physics 1, Health Statistics 67 and Linguistics 21. In the past, I had physics and statistics classes but at SJSU, I find myself learning a lot more in those two subjects. Aside from the academic aspects, there are people who actually want to help you. Whether it be needing an extra hand on that research paper or planning out next semester's classes, there is always help.

    Am enjoying being here

The friendly atmosphere and beautiful campus are my favorite parts about attending this school. Currently, I am living in the dorms and meeting new friends is very easy. Occasionally, there are movie nights and other events organized by residential advisers to bring people closer. Every weekend is when students party it up and live the college experience. Off-campus are tons of restaurants and entertainment in close proximity. The great thing is that public transportation is included in your tuition, so you can basically travel through the whole city!

    Bang for the buck

Paying for college is not too bad right now. However, we are looking at cuts in grants and increases in tuition costs. That is the reason I give this category 4 stars. In the beginning of the school year, I tried my best to find a job on campus to help pay for school but reached no luck. The few career fairs are not as helpful as I would want them to be. Many students are still desperate for some way to earn money.

    Tips for prospective students

My most important tip would be to make your years in college shine. These few short years will either make or break your future and career. Study as hard as you can, get enough sleep and just have fun!

Great for these types of students

SJSU is great for all types of students! It's a very diverse, spirited, and accepting school.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, but SJ has a great reputation for thier BFA and BA programs in dance. The biggest issue is that living costs in San Jose are the highest in all of California

    Tips for prospective students

Get a map if you plan on making a visit! The campus isn't very confusing, but if you are looking for something specific then you will save alot of walking with one. Also, BEWARE of the PARKING, a friendly enough looking street parking space will grant you a $60 parking ticket if you aren't displaying a tag!!!

Great for these types of students

Concert goers, dancers, hockey fans, Spanish speakers, and California lovers!
