Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers are really helpful and most are really good about getting papers or tests backs quickly. I feel pretty challenged, but never really overloaded. Most professors are really good about dealing with special circumatances.
Am enjoying being here The residential life is amazing. There are frequent and a variety of programs. For example, on St. Patrick's day there was a non-alcoholic pub crawl between the buildings and once there was a program where each building represented a different era of time. The RAs are really nice and helpful, but it is really easy to get caught doing anything because the dorms are compact. Also, I like the size since i recognize people in my classes, but at the same time there are always new people to meet.
Bang for the buck Though the meal plan and housing seems really expensive, I feel like I am getting a quality education.
Tips for prospective students Classes are challenging, but some are really easy so decide what you want to feel like during the school year
Great for these types of students Hard working yet relaxed, fairly academic

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My Professors are really experienced and actually know what they're talking about. They are goofy and fun and not strict and grumpy like most colleges. I've learned more here in one semester than in my senior year of high school!
Am enjoying being here There are so many clubs and fun organizations to join! Plus, the sports teams are really welcoming and fun. There is something to do for everyone here.
Bang for the buck At first glance, the costs might seem a bit too heavy. But the school is so helpful when it comes to applying for aid and scholarships. Not only do they help you figure out how to get money, they show you how to use it and pay it back.
Tips for prospective students Apply and take a few trips down to Ashland. You'll fall in love not only with the campus, but with the whole town. There's so many exciting things in Ashland. The food is great too!
Great for these types of students Everyone! Whether you're a sports nut, brainiac, theater kid, band president or just the average Joe, you'll find something to love at SOU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At SOU, I have been able to make my terms as easy or as difficult as I need them to be. The honors program is superb; most majors have an honors program, but if yours doesn't you can graduate with university honors. If you're struggling, there are free tutor centers throughout campus and most classes have a Pass/No Pass option.
Am enjoying being here Ashland, OR is a one-of-a-kind type of place. It may be a small town, but there's always something to do and awesome people to do things with. On campus, there are countless clubs, organisations, and events to get involved with. Ashland's world renown Shakespeare Festival gives it just enough tourist appeal for all kinds of shops, restauraunts, movie theaters, etc all within walking distance. Pure, unadulterated nature is our backyard, with presents no end of outdoor adventures. And the school itself is so open and inviting that you can't help but feel at home. The faculty, staff, and students here are unique and friendly. You make friends easily from all ages walks of life. The friends I've made here are people I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life.
Bang for the buck To be honest, when I started visiting colleges my senior year SOU was on the bottom of my list. I went to private schools all my life, and I couldn't imagine public colleges being able to compare to their private counterparts. And for the most part, I was proven right. But when I first visited SOU, I was amazed. It was just as good as the other colleges that I visited, and in most ways surpassed the others. SOU has so much to offer, and at a fraction of what similar private schools demand. After a two-day visit, I knew where I wanted to go. The price difference just happened to be a bonus.
Tips for prospective students Apply EARLY, and find all the financial aid you can. It becomes a lot more difficult in later years. If you know what you want to major in already, look into SOU's Accelerated Baccalaureate Program. If you're accepted, ABP lets you graduate in three years instead of four, which is a HUGE money saver.
Great for these types of students The academic advisors and departments really bent over backward to help me. I wanted to create my own major via the indersdisciplinary studies major, a relatively new program at SOU. Even though many didn't even know we had such a program, they took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me, discuss what courses I needed for my self-designed major, and the steps necessary to apply for the program and graduate with all my bases covered. If you're looking for a university with faculty & staff willing to do whatever it takes to see your dreams come to life, then SOU is the place for you

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am mostly enrolled in business courses this term, but they are very informative. I am so glad that I am taking them. The professors here are so nice and friendly. They are very open and willing to discuss a variety of things with me that aren't even about schoolwork!
Am enjoying being here I am surrounded by the nicest people. The students are all very friendly and the faculty makes me feel at ease in the classroom. I love that I can walk through my dorm and say hi to almost everyone.
Bang for the buck While the room and board seems to be a little spendy, the education is well worth its price.
Tips for prospective students Come for a visit :) Even if SOU isn't in your top 10... You never know, you may fit right in..
Great for these types of students Love theater? SOU is for you.
Wanna be in the medical field? SOU has a great program. They are working with OHSU.
Wanna start your own business? The small business program, as well as all the other ones offered are really helpful.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor I am in my third year at Southern Oregon University and have yet to feel stagnate in my studies. Each year I continue to grow in my academics and sometimes even surprise myself. Being in school for four years is a long time but constantly learning new and exciting things at SOU makes the time fly by.
Am enjoying being here I am a transfer student at Southern Oregon University and there is two big reasons why: their business department is amazing and the people are honestly happy to meet you. The teachers know what they are talking about because they are currently working (or have worked for many years) in the filed they are teaching. The teachers love what they do and it is a contagious feeling. The environment is an amazing one to say the least. The multicultural center is such an interesting and diverse place to learn about other people and yourself.
Bang for the buck When I transferred to Southern Oregon University it was not the only school I looked at by far. I am paying my own way through college and because of that I had to find the school that would be the most bang for my buck. Honestly, Southern Oregon University is a good price for a great education.
Tips for prospective students At any college hard work and dedication are going to be a must. At Southern Oregon University you have people ready and willing to help you reach your goals. Be it teachers, counselors, or students there are people wanting to help you succeed. Accept the help and truly get involved with the people who are apart of your college life. You won't regret it.
Great for these types of students If you are looking for a college that celebrates differences and diversity then Southern Oregon University is the place for you. It is a chill environment with great people that are ready to work alongside you in order to help you achieve your goals.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning TONS! Of course, it depends on your professor and if you're actually interested in the class, but for the most part I've had wonderful classes. But, you learn so much more than the topic of the class. You learn about what's happening in the world, what's happening locally, and you learn so much more about yourself.
Am enjoying being here SOU is now my second home. When I left I missed it immediately. There are so many clubs and activities that there is never a dull moment. My professors have been very helpful and some quite entertaining!
Bang for the buck Southern Oregon University is a fairly small school and because of this, the teacher to student ratio allows for smaller classes and more one on one time. My average class was about 21 students and I never struggled to get help from a professor, if needed. Unlike larger schools with classes of 250-350 students, you are not just a number at SOU. I am using every ounce of my tuition dollars to participate in the numerous events, social and academic, as well as utilizing the many resources on campus.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Find something you've never tried and do it. Join a club and go to school events! You don't need Greek Life at a university to have a great time.
This isn't high school anymore! You are paying for your classes and you should utilize every moment you're in them. Take notes, read the books/textbooks, use the library, and ask your professors questions!Great for these types of students Any type of student will fit into the SOU lifestyle. It's a friendly and welcoming environment, as well as being in the breathtaking hills of the Rogue Valley.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently a pre-nursing student and I couldn't be more happy with my current learning situation. I mean Wow. At the moment it is Spring term, but when I look back to Fall term I feel like my brain contained a lot less then than it does now. The professors are VERY helpful and all want you to succeed. They are always around to ask questions and help immensely during the learning process. I am learning so much and know I will be prepared for Nursing school when the time comes.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy Southern Oregon University! Not only is the campus beautiful, but it is set in an amazing town. Ashland, Oregon has an amazing park downtown and each store presents its own character (not to mention great food). I love the weather here as well! Unlike weather conditions in my home town, Ashland presents beautiful seasons. The professors are very helpful, the students are friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy.
Bang for the buck Everything about this school is worth every penny. The students, professors, climate, town, and campus make the experience unforgettable.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to do your work! Practice time management and constantly write down due dates and test dates in a planner or on your computer. Frequently check your email and mysou accounts. Also, work hard. Hard work pays off, but don't be afraid to have a little fun.
Great for these types of students This school is great for people who enjoy smaller towns and atmospheres. The town has a unique character to it and is a sight for many tourists, especially during the Shakespeare festival. Those who love acting and plays will find it desirable.

Bang for the buck As stated above, the educational quality is excellent!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences SOU is beautiful, friendly, helpful, and feels like home. I feel comfortable there and the people are all so nice. I can't wait to make it my home!
Tips for prospective students Communicate with people! I email the admissions office all the time. It may get annoying, but at least I'm showing them that I'm very serious about my college education.
Academic Rigor I haven't taken any classes, but I've heard that they're really good. I've also heard that the teachers are great!
Dorm Life The dorm rooms are small--as most colleges. But they look great and I'm excited to live in them!
Food and Dining I've eaten there and the food isn't absolutely wonderful but they have a sandwich bar and that is really good. The desserts were good. They have a coffee shop as well as a subway!
What to do for fun They have a nightclub that hosts different kinds of parties/events. It sounds really cool!
Bang for the buck It's relatively cheap and I've been told it's a public school with a private education.
Clubs and Activities They even have a TOMS club!
Greek Life none.
Campus Safety I've heard it's really good!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I would say the university is awesome. I am taking online classes right now and want to get back to campus classes. I am enjoy both the teacher and student interaction and can not wait to get on campus.
Tips for prospective students Always make sure your current school really does send your final transcripts. Because it can be a nightmare.
Academic Rigor It can be overwhelming if you do not keep up on homework and studying for tests. Online classes can be very difficult.
Dorm Life I do not live in dorms so I am not sure.
Food and Dining I know the places off campus are very good in Ashland, Oregon. But I am an online student so do not eat on campus.
What to do for fun Relax when you can and get plenty of sleep.
Bang for the buck I would say it is a good investment.
Great for these types of students Anyone young or non-traditional.
Clubs and Activities It looks like there are many different clubs and activities on campus and off.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I love the campuse, it is very well taken care of, I'm always taking pictures of the sceanary. I love my teachers, all of them have been very enthusiastic about what they teach and they help convey their joy to their students. The atmosphere is very supportive, no one looks down on you for who you are or what you believe in, as long as you return the favor.
Tips for prospective students I found a place near the campus so i could walk/ride my bike to class. The campus is on a hill so if you have classes at the top, you'll get your exercise in for the day. There is a nice gym on campus that has lots of good equipment. Make sure to talk to different people and go to different events, the campus is very diverse and there are a lot of neat people that go here
Academic Rigor They grade very hard, but if you do the required work you will pass.
Dorm Life I've never stayed in the dorms, but some people really like them, some don't, I don't think there is anything too special about them, just dorms
Food and Dining The food is okay, i don't eat at the cafeteria much since i live off campus and prepare my own food, but i have heard it is good but it gets repetitive.
What to do for fun There is a lot a things to do for fun, I have been taking dance classes, and go to plays and people watch, there is a down town area with a lot of neat shops and since it is a theater town there is always someone playing guitar or the flute or singing down there, some nights there are fire jugglers and for those over 21 there are a few neat bars, as well as a few vinyards and lots of wine tasting and such. For normal shopping the city of Medford is only 10 miles away and there are lots of things to do there also.
Bang for the buck I believe the teachers here are wonderful and are really willing to help their students achieve as much as possible with their career choices. They all love what they do and that has a big difference, i have been to schools where the teachers seem almost as bored as the students and that was not a good learning experience for me, but here at SOU i have never had a boring teacher.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This is my first year here, but there is a ton of theater things all year long,
Great for these types of students This campus is a wonderful place for people who enjoy theater, art, music, psycology, business and the sciences. We have a large theater program and many students come here to major in theater. We have a large shakespeare festival every summer that people from all over the world come to. The campus is also good for people who feel like they stand out, or enjoy being different. They have a large gay community and a women's resource center that has given support to a lot of people as well as many other programs.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs, chemistry clubs, biology clubs, Latino, African American... the list goes on.
Greek Life I don't believe there is a sorority or fraternity here, and if there is, it's very small.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences SOU is wonderful if you live an alternative lifestyle. They try their best to cater to the minority. If you identify as a minority in ANYTHING, SOU will be an amazing school for you.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused. Know your goals. Pay attention to seemingly monotonous irrelevant details.
Academic Rigor They hold you accountable despite online education being a primary. The advisers and teachers are thorough and value learning above getting a grade.
Dorm Life I'm on off campus and online student but being on campus the dorms are huge and they're building another bunch of them. I've heard that campus life is fun for on-campus living.
Food and Dining They are a very 'green' school. They provide a healthy living style both in food and production of food.
What to do for fun SOU is the seat of activity. It's in a town based significantly on addressing minority groups. They have so many activities designed to include minorities. If you've been to Ashland you know that the minority is definitely the majority.
Bang for the buck SOU can be expensive if you're transferring from a community college. It's like that anywhere but it was a shock how much more expensive it was from RCC.
Great for these types of students Alternative lifestyle students, especially LGBTQ.
Clubs and Activities There are so many it would be impossible to list them here, lol.
Campus Safety Recent events have beefed up security. They take the safety of students seriously and have seminars to provide safety information.

Academic Rigor Not too hard, but not too easy.
Dorm Life A lot of fun, and a great place to find friends.
Food and Dining Cheap, but somewhat bland.
What to do for fun Many clubs and groups at SOU. Go downtown with friends, check out the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Lithia Park, and many other attractions.

Great for these types of students Liberal arts students, those especially in the areas of Theatre. Psychology students and Business students will also do well here.
Clubs and Activities A lot of great ones, but the students don't know about them.
Greek Life None at all.
Campus Safety Very, very safe campus with great security.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pretty average school. Not too hard. Class offerings are minimal.
Tips for prospective students Good school for theater or liberal arts majors i guess but definitely not ideal for science majors.
Academic Rigor Depends on the classes you take but over all pretty average class load and difficulty level.
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms so I don't know anything about the dorm life here.
Food and Dining Since i don't live on campus i'm not too sure how the food is. From what i've heard campus food isn't very good, but there are lots of restaurants off campus that are pretty close by.
Bang for the buck Pretty expensive for out of state students and honestly i think i was getting a better education at the junior college i was going to.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences southern oregon university is small, and the location is beautiful and priceless. the general education standards are lower than other schools i have attended, and many students here do not care too much about their intelligence. however, the size and location makes it a great place to explore and to make valuable connections.
Tips for prospective students if you're looking for a crazy fun party school with a nightlife and lots of events, ashland is not for you. it's a slower, simpler lifestyle in a small town. you should enjoy the outdoors or the arts if you are planning on going here.
What to do for fun outdoor activities!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i have attended the preview weekend and the campus is especially nice. people-students and staff-are extremely kind and helpful. the food is really wonderful as are the dorms.
Tips for prospective students this is a school for those who love the sunshine, like a rural community, and does not like the bustling of the urban areas. peaceful and quiet.
Academic Rigor i am rating this based off of the preview weekend. so far, so good.
Dorm Life the beds are comfy and the rooms are pretty cozy. it is also a great working environment, however, in some of the dorms like at cox hall, the walls are very thin and if you like to go to bed earlier than your neighbor, you will hear them until either of you fall asleep.
Food and Dining the dining areas are sophisticated. i really like the food courts and the different varieties of edibles.
What to do for fun when i was there, i really enjoyed the rock climbing walls, which is secluded within the building with the gymnasium. inside, it stays warm and you never seem to get bored.
Bang for the buck i'd say with the great education that i've heard about, the 30k to be there is well worth the money.
Great for these types of students quiet, studious, determined, active, and an academic strider.
Campus Safety very low crime area. not that many reported. nice and secure.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences southern oregon university is a small and very beautiful campus. there is really a sense of community in ashland and each class has a relatively small class load. this college is for students who truly want to learn and get involved, it is not for students who just want to party.
Tips for prospective students be prepared before classes start. don't wait until the last minute to buy books or supplies. if you want to get the most out of a class read a bit of your textbooks before you're required to. show up on time and awake!
Academic Rigor i am just a freshman so i cannot say how more major-oriented classes will be, but right now i feel my classes and teachers are pretty laid-back. i have to have everything turned in on time and i am graded on showing up to class and participating. however, if i have a legitimate reason for missing a class all of my teachers have been understanding and allowed me to turn in assignments online or reschedule exams.
Dorm Life i do not live in a dorm so i'm not sure!
Food and Dining there are a few very nice little cafes on campus to get a cup of coffee or a snack. since the campus is small, nothing is far and it is right in town so you can quickly walk to any restaurants or stores in town.

Campus Safety ashland feels like a really really safe town and the campus feels even safer. in michigan in the city it was normal to have your car or house broken into, but i have never heard of that happening here. the campus is safe in terms of bullying too, i have never heard any derogatory or rude things said while i was around at sou.

Not only will you learn everything you need to in your specific track, you'll also have plenty of chances to learn about other things as well!
Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful; with art projects, status, and areas set up everywhere. There are also double-decker bike racks for students to keep their bikes between classes (everyone rides between buildings) and trees line the paths. The community is a tightly knit one, so in coming students will always manage to find a friend quickly and have support wherever they are.
Bang for the buck Like many universities, there are several financial aid and scholarship options for incoming students - which are incredibly helpful due to the costs of tuition and boarding (plus everything else). As with many schools, where you live really helps with cost, but take every chance you can to help save money.

Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful, small, and easy to understand.
Great for these types of students Students that learn better in a small enviornment, like the outdoors, and like being active in the student community.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor every class covers a wide range of different majors. here at sou, you have to explore all of the majors at sometime while you are here.
Will enjoy being here I will enjoy being here because the campus is amazing. The students seem to have a lot of fun while working very hard. I feel relaxed. I know that they have great programs and the teachers are great.
Tips for prospective students there is nothing to be scared about here. i suggest using rate my professor when looking for a teacher when you have been accepted because what is on there is mostly true.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You get out what you put into your education. If you put effort into your studies, SOU has the resources to help you succeed. The professors are very good and eager to help, as well as everyone else on campus.
Am enjoying being here Campus is great! Beautiful, relaxing, and with a fair amount of stuff to do. If you don't find something you like, its fairly easy to make it yourself!
Bang for the buck Food plans are RIDICULOUS. The quality of the food is very poor, with slow improvements. Very overpriced for what you get. Depending on when my classes got out my freshman year, there also wasn't a lot of food options. I could spend the flat rate of around $10 for a slice of pizza and some burnt almost-a-hamburger. If you can, get into the Madrone complex. It has a kitchen and you can just get the Madrone food plan, so that you can just make your own meals. Its very worth it. The less you eat in Cascade (the cafeteria) the better. Elmos (the lunch food court) is a fair bit better, but only operates for a few hours. Everything else is fair.
Tips for prospective students Keep track of what requirements your credits fill. It can get really confusing if you don't stay on top of it. Also get close to your advisor(s) and work hard. Also, make friends everywhere and offer to volunteer for things. I volunteered one time and it lead me to a job!
Great for these types of students Self-motivated; prefers smaller classes; enjoys being a part of a tight knit major oriented group.

Am enjoying being here The weather has been mostly rainy here, but when the sun comes out its amazing. I love living in the dorms and living on campus.
Tips for prospective students Buy rain boots. If you would enjoy a big campus but enough to walk from one end to the other in ten minutes this is a great school. IT is very gorgeous. Downtown is also amazing.
Great for these types of students Theater
like small towns
don't mind rain
small classrooms; good student to teacher ratio in some classesLogin to rate or flag the reviews
