Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Texas State University is no longer just a party school for frat guys/ sorority girls to come and waste four years of their parents' money. The professors and students are all very serious about their education here. In fact, our Geography department is the best on the country. If you want to get a quality education, TSU is a great place to be.
Am enjoying being here Not only is it a great place to learn, but it is a beautiful place to live. Central campus is right next to the famous San Marcos river where students can relax and go tubing to wash away their study stresses. There is a great student government that is always trying to make the best out of the campus for the students, and if you live on campus. you're just a short walk from The Square, where there are great local restaurants and clubs to enjoy the nightlife of San Marcos.
Bang for the buck Back on topic of the education business, if you are looking for a great education, but don't want to spend alot doing it, Texas State is definately where you want to go. Tuition here at Texas State is almost as cheap as attending a community college, but the education you get is definately above par. Your tuition includes free usage of the Student Rec center (which, by all accounts is nice enough to justify having a monthly fee), and the campus buses. A great place to be!
Tips for prospective students Don't hesitate! Incoming freshmen are required to live on campus their first year, and housing is limited. Apply as soon as possible so you can get a room!
Great for these types of students Great for students who are seeking a career in education, or Geography, Business students (McCoy College of Business is a great school here at Texas State), and others. We have a budding nursing program, as well as pre-law, and are expanding our masters and doctorate programs as well!

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students Always read your book and go to study sessions.
Great for these types of students Students who are outgoing and ready to learn will be a perfect fit here. The school has a reputation for being a party school, but it really isn't different from any other campus. If that's all you're looking to do, I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully you're okay with staying back home after the first semester. :/

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students For prospective students, it is good to know that Texas State is in the Hill country of Texas, so it is really pretty and very clean, but there are hills. It is also a smaller campus but it is really well organized and your never more then 15-20 minutes from food or your hall.
Great for these types of students Laid back students, who still know how to get work done. Even if you are not very resourceful, there are lots of things on campus that are designed to help you pass your classes and succeed.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I am looking forward to experiencing this school in July and getting a head start before the Fall session begins.
Will enjoy being here The people at Texas State have been very helpful and seem to want to help students on the cusp of getting started on the right track. This is done by offering the Emerging Stars program to students who are needing a second chance at getting into college.
Bang for the buck Cost is average for Texas Universities.
Tips for prospective students Don't ever believe you can't get into a university. Make contact early in the year with the counselors on campus and let your high school counselors know how important this school is to you. Visit and talk to the counselors and email them throughout your senior year.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I received 42 credit hours from IB and AP classes in high school and my first semester courses were just basically review classes for me. However, since I have all of my core classes out of the way, I can take Upperclassmen and Honors courses for my major as a first year student.
Am enjoying being here I love Texas State so much! The professors are all there to help you if you just ask them. The students are ALL friendly - I haven't met any person that would not tell me where a building was and everyone wants to be there. The river is a 5 minute walk from campus, downtown is just down the hill, the outlet malls are just down I-35, and Austin/San Antonio are just 30 minutes away. :D
The athletic games are all free, so take the opportunity to go to them. The football team is really good and the marching band is amazing.Bang for the buck Texas State is one of the cheapest state schools in Texas. All of my classes have been worthwhile and I don't regret taking any of them. The textbooks are expensive, but buy the used books instead.
I have spent a lot of money on food from the grocery store and eating out at restaurants on the weekends. Just keep a tab of your spending and you should be okay.Tips for prospective students Professors actually do care about their students. They may not seem as friendly as your high school teachers, but professors have bigger classrooms and you are all adults now. They will not come up to you and personally ask you if you understand everything, so it is up to you to ask them for help. Take the opportunity to get to personally know them and their grading techniques and you will excel.
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!! You will want to party, go swim in the river, and just sleep - But most of my classes had 3-5 grades in them. Some professors hold review sessions before the major exams, but don't slack off. There is a time for fun and a time for work, but don't forget you are at college to get an education.
Take advantage of the writing/math labs, the library, and the rec. You are paying for them in your tuition.Great for these types of students I am majoring in Communication Design and love it. The art building is brand new and is state-of-the-art. Texas State has won numerous graphic design competitions and has beaten UNT several years running.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors here at Texas State strive very hard to get their students on the right track. The school offers many educational tools like instructional assistants, tutors, SLAC, math learning center, writing center, library assistance, and many more resources are available to those who are willing to spend some time studying.
Am enjoying being here Texas State itself is beautiful, the campus is absolutely lovely and there are so many natural amenities that contribute to that beauty. I enjoy the college life here, there are always school organized events that tend to bring students together. Of course, there are the traditional parties like at any other school.
Bang for the buck If you take advantage of what is offered to you as a student you really do get bang for your buck because the school does what it can to keep some costs low.
Tips for prospective students If you are expecting to come here only for the parties you will be surprised, yes, there are many parties but you have to be able to balance the fun with your assignments. Even though many professors try to work with you in order to raise your grade, it is your sole responsibility to stay on top of the work.
Great for these types of students Great for students who enjoy seeing the beauty the city has to offer; looking for a good education; some personal instruction by the professor (depending on the course); and basically learning and having a good time.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are excellent, and the most of the professors are very passionate about what they are teaching. I actually have a hard time choosing what classes to take every semester because there are so many great choices!
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and the town is amazing. It has a city feel, but not as big as Austin or other big cities, so it is less stuffy. The river is awesome, too and gives everyone something to do during the spring and the summer. The location is awesome, also, because it is right in the middle of San Antonio and Austin. Just a quick drive to anywhere you need to go!
Bang for the buck I believe the education I am getting for the money I am paying is great. I enjoy all my classes and the resources are amazing. The library is open 24 hours during finals week, and it is perfect for a quiet place to study. There are also many computer labs and tutoring centers around the campus.
Tips for prospective students Keep your high school GPA up, and be sure to take the SAT and the ACT, some think the ACT may be a little easier. Be involved in your community and join clubs in high school, showing that you can multi-task is something that looks great on applications!
OH! And always go to class! You'll regret skipping! And study sessions work wonders!Great for these types of students Great for students who enjoy the Hill Country, diverse environments and an overall great experience! Texas State has something to offer for every kind of person, whether you love sports, are into church, or if you're really into the Greek Life. Everyone can find a place to fit in on this college campus!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors all have a passion for their craft, so no matter what class your in you will learn immense amounts of information with ease. I usually do not like political science, but my professor is so into it that it is difficult not to get fired up about the topics in her lectures.
Am enjoying being here The whole campus has a great vibe. There is always something to do on campus and off campus. All sporting events are amazing with the spirited crowds that come out and support. Even the dorms are fun, especially when you know your neighbors.
Bang for the buck They are generous with financial aid, so it makes it more enjoyable when I know that they are helping me obtain my education.
Tips for prospective students Make sure when you look for your future home (dorms), make sure you know how far it will be from your classes. Keep in mind that the whole campus is built on a hill so your willingness to walk across campus might change. I would definitely think about rushing if you want to make alot of friends fast even though the greek community only makes up around 13% of the campus. Get involved your first year and meet people in your classes. Don't be afraid to go the library, SLAC, or the writing workshops. It is there to help YOU. When choosing your meal plan for the semester keep in mind the amount of food you normally consume. If you know you will be snacking in your room alot then get the smallest meal plan. If you usually eat full meals twice a day then get the middle meal plan. If you plan on eating all 3 meals a day then get the large meal plan. Also go to your professors office hours, it will show that you want to succeed and they will notice and help your grades.
Great for these types of students Students of all kinds are here. If you made A's and B's in high school, then you have to work hard to maintain a B. If you don't study be ready to feel the wrath of hard grading professors.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Majority of professor's are well rounded and are good at what they teach. Most enjoy being there or love what they teach, making it easier for the student to learn and understand.
Am enjoying being here I would not have chosen anywhere else to be. People are extremely welcoming and it is easy to make friends. There are numerous amount of extracurricular activities to choose from as well. Texas State makes sure everybody has a spot where they fit in.
Bang for the buck Texas State is not very expensive for all the amenities it provides somebody. It is worth every penny and you will definitely want to return after your first semester.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to attend classes and take the notes given. Also read what the professor tells you to from the book because the majority will wind up on the test. Go into all of your classes with an open mind and you shouldn't be let down. Yes, Texas State is known as a party school, but as long as you make sure to put your school work ahead of the partying you will be sure to do well in school, while also leaving time for fun as well.
Great for these types of students Great for students who are willing to be out there and meet people, it is a large campus with many opportunities to do so. Also good for people who love the outdoors because Texas State has a beautiful campus. It is great for just about anybody because Texas State is a large school full of diversity.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You go much more in depth into the material than you do in high school courses. You are also allowed to talk about more topics that are discouraged in high school.
Am enjoying being here If you do not join fraternities, sororities, clubs, or organizations, it is hard to make friends--don't think you HAVE to join anything to make friends, though. Living on campus helps get you settled in to your new life.
Bang for the buck WAY cheaper than University of Texas and Texas A&M!
Tips for prospective students Wear shoes that support your feet. You will be walking up and down hills all day. Don't forget your bathing suit!--the San Marcos River runs straight through campus. Sewell Park is a really nice place to hang out!
Academics-wise: GO TO CLASS! You are here to learn--not nap and party your life away. You will have PLENTY of opportunities to do these things in time. A lot of teachers give extra credit to those who attend class regularly. Also, Study! Study! Study! Many teachers give 4 exams during the semester, and those are your ONLY grades.Great for these types of students People who are outgoing, friendly, love the outdoors (scenery is amazing here!!!), and want to have a memorable college life!

Am enjoying being here If you ask for help to a random stranger, they will be glad to help. I got lost plenty of times in the beginning of my freshman year but people are willing to help. Student life is great, just get involved.
Bang for the buck Money is tight for me, but it is well worth it!
Tips for prospective students Come because you want to come, not because a friend is going there too. You will enjoy it tons more!
Great for these types of students Great for people who will apply themselves.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The first couple of classes i assumed that it was just going to be like some high school classes would be..show up to class, barely learn anything and get somebusy work to do but after we got in the whole transition period my eyes where opened and i realized college is fifty times better than high school.
Am enjoying being here I'm only a freshman so i don't know all the little college hang out spots yet but the ones i have been to have made being away from home a lot easier.
Bang for the buck When you first show up to campus you expect to see nothing but parties going on but those rumors are wrong and i am glad. Your tuition covers a lot of extra activities to help you succeed in the college life.
Tips for prospective students Don't believe the rumors of a party school. They have changed the image to be a legitimate contender in the top universities in the state of Texas.
Great for these types of students All kinds

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Theres a large amount of classes offered and teachers really seem to care about their students and in my experience have been readily available to help the students.
Am enjoying being here Its a big university and has a diverse student body. There are many different clubs to choose from and its almost impossible not to find one that interests you. Living in the dorms is awesome as cheesy as it may seem the people in your dorm can become like a second family.
Bang for the buck Compared to other schools its not a bad price but all college tuitions are a little hefty.
Tips for prospective students If you want to meet people hang out in the dorm lobbies so many people walk through there on a daily basis your bound to make some new friends. its also the center of all activities in the dorm when people are not in there rooms they usually check out the lobby to hang out with other students.
go to class! I've seen many students have to drop out and ones that have been put on academic probation because they are failing because they don't go to class. All my classes have taken attendance and its part of your grade its not that hard to do just show up!
Also if you have trouble with your classes the academic counselors are great and teachers are helpful as well just stop by office hours and most professors are happy to help .Great for these types of students Social. Outgoing. Athletic. really anyone can find their place here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The learning aspect of college is sometimes the part everyone forgets, why else would you spend thousands of dollars on your education? You might as well benefit from it. Sure everyone refers to Texas State as the party school but it doesn't mean we don't have knowledge either. Texas State has expanded over the years, and will continue to do so. The best advice I can give you, is get help personally from your teacher. Not only are you going directly to your source of knowledge but it also allows your professor to get to know you and see you take initiative and interest in their class. Not only that, but take advantage of SLAC tutors! I can't stress it enough.
Am enjoying being here San Marcos has a prime location right in between the major cities of Austin and San Antonio which makes for easy trips and finding something to do. Yes, San Marcos is a small town but it's easy to become familiar with what you're around and hardly ever getting lost. Not only that but we've got the San Marcos River which runs right by campus. Go to class in your bathing suit and head to the river right after! Not to mention Don's fish camp is one of the BEST places to go float which is here in San Marcos owned by Don himself. And going to River Pub and Grins is a must!
Bang for the buck Reasonably priced for the education you're receiving. It's the college experience and lifestyle you're getting, along with obtaining a diploma. We have a really nice REC center which you should take full advantage of. The SLAC program is a free source which can be extremely helpful to you, and I highly recommend it. The English department has people willing to help you revise and edit your papers. We have a nice football stadium which is just happens to be expanding, just like our school is.
Tips for prospective students Tips for you: Use Ratemyprofessor.com to look up professors when building your class schedule. Attend some of your teachers office hours if you need help, and if not that then go to SI sessions or SLAC. Just don't do nothing about getting the help you need, it's only going to benefit you in the end I promise. Make as many friends as possible, be social, and get yourself involved in something!
Great for these types of students Texas State is a great college for the most diverse group of people ever, I feel like I've seen it all here. Don't come here thinking it's just the Party School, because your world will be completely turned upside down. Without any effort at all, you will fail and there's no need for you to be wasting your time and money at Texas State. The McCoy School of a Business is a wonderful and honored program to be a part of and if you're interested in business I highly recommend it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The quality of instruction here is outstanding! There are many notable faculty, and even local celebrities! Tim O'Brien, renowned author of The Things They Carried, is on staff here along with distinguished members of the Scientific community who have been awarded national grants for biomechanical research. What I love most about the professors, however, is there accessibilty. I've met with several professors about issues I've had, and they have always had an open door and a listening ear. The curriculum isn't a gimme, but it's not a nightmare either. Texas State offers a challenging, but rewarding, program for hundreds of undergraduate degrees
Am enjoying being here The social life is hopping! From Sewell Park on the banks of the beautiful San Marcos River, to the newly renovated Rec Center, to the quaint local flavors of the shoppes on the Square, there is something for everyone at this campus! My personal favorite is 50 cent Tuesdays at the local dollar theater, just a five minute walk from campus.
Bang for the buck While the fifth largest university in Texas, Texas State continually offers some of the lowest tuition and fees in the area. Not nearly as expensive as nearby UT, this college truly is the rising star of Texas, as it judiciously distributes student fees to accommodate it's rising number of students. There were many services that I didn't know about and many of them are either low-cost or free, such as the buses that shuttle students to and from San Antonio and Austin.
Tips for prospective students Bring some walking shoes! This beautiful campus is nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and the stairs leading up the to the majestic Alkek library will be a daily reminder that you get a moderate workout simply walking to class! Also, you'll want to explore the campus and town on foot for a breathtaking tour of this gorgeous landscape.
Great for these types of students Commuters, First Generations, Liberal Arts Majors, Graphic Design Majors, Transfer Students

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Depending on the professor you have, the course you take and the seat you choose, you can learn a lot or a little at Texas State. It's all up to you! I'm learning great amounts and am putting my knowledge to good use. There is the occasional course that doesn't interest me that I tune out, but other wise I'm learning as much as I can.
Am enjoying being here I have never seen a friendlier campus that this. At my orientation, the greeters were honestly enthused to be welcoming us. Every professor wants to work with you to boost your grade and the people you meet here are incredible. The food is great (and I'm a vegan!), the area is perfect, and I'm getting the full college experience right here.
Bang for the buck Tuition is high, but what can you expect. I think the price is great for the amount of things I've learned.
Tips for prospective students As a first generation college student, I had no idea what to expect. But after being here for a few months, it's safe to say that in time, you will learn everything and have the best years of your life here.
Great for these types of students Those who love to socialize, and those who love the downtown area. It's also great for people who need a flexible schedule and interesting professors.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I definitely feel that I have chosen the right school. I am challenged and interested by what I am learning.
Am enjoying being here I LOVE this campus. The environment is very welcoming and I had no problem transitioning into college life. My dorm room is teeny tiny, but its good location and atmosphere have made it more than bearable.
Bang for the buck I feel that Texas State is a great school because of its high value. I am paying relatively little for a very high quality education.
Tips for prospective students Get ready to work hard and to have lots of fun. There are so many fun things to do here that it's easy to get distracted, so focus, but you'll definitely enjoy San-Marvelous.
Great for these types of students As far as my major(Biology) goes, don't expect to be able to slack off. Get motivated and be persistent. It's much easier to keep a ball rolling than to get it going once it's stopped.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot All through high school I heard from older peers that Texas State University was just a party school and the academics weren't up to par. However, having completed my first year I am happy and proud to say that their reviews were wrong. The courses here are just as challenging as I had expected college courses to be and the professors care a lot. They do what they can to help you, but you have to be willing to put in the man hours if you want to succeed and not just waste your parents and the school's money.
Am enjoying being here While the school work was challenging, I still really enjoyed campus life and San Marcos in general. There are plenty of fun things to do around town such as; great restaurants, the Tanger Outlet mall, and of course the River runs right through campus. Just about everyone I met was extremely friendly and willing to help with anything you need. Not only that, but there are plenty of social and academic clubs to get involved with and are all very inviting. I myself was in a social club for the Rugby team called the Renegade Roses and am planning on joining the Pre-Vet club in the fall as that is my major.
Bang for the buck The campus and social life of Texas State is great, but one of the main reasons I enrolled here was because it had a lower price than other 4-year universities. I was accepted to Baylor, U of H, and a few others, but even with the grants and scholarships I received from them I could not afford the extra cost of tuition. Texas State has great academics (the best Geography program in the country, actually!) and a fun social life with plenty of people to make friends with and learn from. Also, the meal plans are fairly inexpensive and a good idea for college students whose money situation is a little tight; you won't go hungry with all the meal trades freshmen are required to get.
Tips for prospective students For those considering Texas State University, I just want to say that while it is still considered a party school, don't attend for that reason. Your social life won't be disappointed, but your academic life might be. In your first year with your new found freedom you could get caught up in all the parties, but don't get consumed in your social life. If you cannot distinguish the difference between the time to play and the time to work, then this may not be the university for you. I have seen a lot of friends and peers spend their entire first year partying and then wondering why they're on academic probation at the end. I'm not suggesting that you never go out and unwind, but don't forget why your going to college; to get an education and become successful in your future endeavors.
Great for these types of students Texas State University is great for students who are social and love to be involved in their school. Anyone who has immense pride in their school will be greatly welcomed here and there is no lack of extra curricular activities here. Also, it is great for the active student who enjoys being outside and getting some exercise. The campus is close enough to most housing to walk or ride your bike and there is a terrific Recreational Center where you can work out or play sports with your friends. And if you enjoy floating down the river, decent food selections on campus, and frequent free concerts and activities, this is the place for you.

Like all colleges, Texas State does have parties but there is most definitely a ton of time that goes into your success academically. I am very impressed with Texas States classes and professors.
Am enjoying being here most definitely. I grew up in the suburbs of Dallas so culturally it's very different here. It's a beautiful campus with very friendly people.
Bang for the buck it's not cheap but its a great school. Texas States a university, not a community college, so its going to be a little expensive

Bang for the buck The cost of the school is alright. Not to large, not to little, just right.
Tips for prospective students Students will make sure while in high school or Jr college, that they will apply for scholarships ahead of time, Complete Financial Aid, and discuss the school's administrator about the degree plan.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences texas state university is the 3rd largest university in texas and has one of the most beautiful landscapes. it is composed of 10 colleges, the liberal arts, sciences, and education programs are state of the art and well known nationally. it is the only university in the state to have a former president of the united states as an alumnus.
Tips for prospective students for most undergraduate courses you don't have to buy your books on campus, there are several off campus sites that have the same book at a discounted price.
living in the dorms as a freshman is very very convenient!
campus is beautiful but be prepared to walk over these hills!
do not get distracted with greek life, it is huge in this university.Academic Rigor it is not very high, i found challenging my self in several occasions. professors are student centered which is a very good thing , they do want you to understand, but at times it can put other students behind.
Dorm Life the campus is beautiful and is a lot of walking. the hills can give you some great legs! dorms have social events and also advertise organizations, events and projects.
Food and Dining off campus, there are many locally owned shops to shop and eat at. the food on campus is not great but they are fairly close.
What to do for fun sewell park is located on the texas state campus, which has an amazing river you can float in!
aquarena center has glass bottom boats, aquarium and exhibits.
the famous san marcos outlets, which include tanger outlets and prime outlets.Bang for the buck not very expensive compared to other universities but it is not the cheapest either. if you are focused and dedicated in academics you will do great here. if you get easily distracted it could be a problem.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus greek life is huge at this university.
sewell park has the san marcos river which has several endangered species.
the quad is located on campus, many organizations set up there to recruit students, it has a free speech place where many cast their opinion.

Will enjoy being here I'm more than sure you will find your crowd here and there is always fun activities going on here at Texas State. From the river to the parties, you will enjoy it.
Bang for the buck I did not receive much financial aid and still barely making it. But I am pretty sure it will be worth it.
Tips for prospective students Apply for your housing early, because it is first-come-first-serve so I received a indecent room. But hey! its just for the first year.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The honors college provides great opportunities so definitely apply. They also really care about you. They helped me to get a scholarship even though they don't even know me!
Will enjoy being here The campus is amazingly beautiful! And the location is great as well. I'm in love with it.
Bang for the buck For tuition, room and board, and books its about 16,000 a year which is pretty good. I have about 9,000 a year to pay including my financial aid package which they were very generous with as well as my scholarship. All in all its a pretty good deal.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus and apply to honors college!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot There seems to be only a few classes that are packed, and they're mostly just basic core classes. I'm very excited to see a large school that has decent sized classes. Texas State has a HUGE library, has tutoring and study groups, and counselors to help you with many of your concerns and problems. I believe that I'll be able to gather and retain all the knowledge attained through this college!
Will enjoy being here The campus is BREATHTAKING! An amazing recreational center, trees and hills and a very youthful and happy environment. There's a lovely river and all the locations are convieniently close together. Now, let's just hope I can snag decent living quarters if I get accepted!
Bang for the buck Money is less of an issue for me than it is for others; for all of the services and opportunities that the campus has to offer, not to mention all of the classes and student help that is available, my parents and I feel comfortable with the tuition fees. As far as the dorm rooms go, I can tolerate using a fan or frightening bathrooms. I only ask that I have a place to sleep!
Tips for prospective students This school has a reputation of being a party school, but apart from the influx of students around the river on a sunny day, I've seen nothing that would confirm this. Definetly take a tour and look around inside the various buildings that may apply to you. (ie., study areas, cafeterias, the rec. center...) Have a chat with a student that doesn't look too busy and get their opinion on the school plus any advice they can give you. Visit during a weekday in the spring or fall semesters and try to get a feel for what campus life is like.
Great for these types of students This college is great for those who:
Want to live in a not-too-big town (that has a LOT of shopping.)
Don't mind being one person in a VERY large crowd of other people
Are active and want to be involved with many things
Can deal with limited parking (I suggest bringing a bicycle!)
Can tolerate hot summers, bitter winters without snow, and aging dorm rooms.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The courses are a bit challenging, keeping up with daily classwork and notes will help you receive a good grade in the class. If you have any questions feel free to email or visit the professors during their visitation hours because they really do make an effort to respond to emails quickly and also to answer any questions you have when going to their office.
Am enjoying being here My first semester I did not enjoy it so much, but my second semester did change my opinion on the school because I started making a lot more friends, people are actually pretty friendly if you allow yourself to be social. The campus gives off a big school with a small town vibe to it. Creating a better atmosphere to meeting new people because a lot of us Bobcats are extremely friendly, you just have to be friendly and you'll get the same in return.
Bang for the buck Going to school here isn't too expensive compared schools like UT and or TLU. Private schools are too pricy and big city schools have smaller spaces to live in that are also more pricy. Texas State is affordable because it is not in a big city, nor is it a big school.
Tips for prospective students Definitely do a campus visit to get a feel for the school. Texas State was known to be a Party School when it was Southwestern, but has actually changed, the party vibe is still here, its just more casual, and less extreme. Don't judge a book by its cover and attend a sporting event to get a feel for that Bobcat Pride
Great for these types of students This school is great for students that like to have lots of friends and yet have a lot of close ones. Students that can do well in auditorium sized classrooms. With all honesty, its great for just about anybody. the only problem I do see is if you like to have that one on one time with professors during class, you cannot be expecting so much of that here due to the large sized classes we have.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professor's are very knowledgeable in what they teach. Many of them have had years of professional experience in their fields and it helps give you a real world perspective while learning.
Am enjoying being here The campus alone is one of the most unique and beautiful I've seen. The town of San Marcos is welcoming with a small town feel but you never feel secluded being so close to larger cities like San Antonio and Austin.
Bang for the buck Considering how high the graduation rate is compared to other universities in Texas it goes goes to show how much you really get out of Texas State. The education you receive here surpasses other universities because many in Texas have an subject-emphasis while Texas State is diverse in degrees.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the area through your education. The San Marcos river runs right through the campus and scuba diving classes are available. Also wakeboarding at a nearby lake.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Now that i'm getting into my major classes i'm learning everything i need to know for my future and i'm enjoying it. My basic classes were a little repetitive from my high school AP classes which got me questioning Tstate a bit. But now that i'm learning what i'll need to know for whatever career path i choose to go down with my degree i'm excited and more interested in school than ever.
Am enjoying being here I always knew i'd have fun in college but wow i never thought it'd be so awesome. From the river, to the campus itself and to alllll the pretty girls, texas state is truly beautiful. The students here all have the same outgoing friendly outlook on life and enjoy being here which makes it all the better. The social scene is awesome but its also feels good to be around people who want to be successful and laern like you do.
Bang for the buck the college experience you'll receive both academically and socially is something you'll never forget. truly the best time of your life.
Tips for prospective students GO TO CLASS! just by simply going to class, which i never found that hard b/c you choose your own schedule, you will be so much more prepared than if you did not go. stay away from early classes if possible b/c although college is not about partying.. it happens, and when it does you will find it extra difficult to make it your early classes. And be involved. join an organization, whether you go greek or join a club, the more your involved the more you'll learn and enjoy Texas State.
Great for these types of students If you want an amazing college experience along with your degree Tstate is the school for you. TSU has a very chilled relaxed atmosphere with tons of friendly people. The beautiful San Marcos river runs right through campus which is a perfect place to go take your mind off school. if you want to have a unforgettable college experience while having fun and still getting your work dobe, come to texas state

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I am a student who is planning to get my degree with Texas State in their Texas State McCoy college of business school. My residence is in the south Austin area and U.T. is usually peoples first choice but U.T. has class sizes that are huge compared to Texas State University. Texas State University has classes that hold up to 35 students. They have some classes that are for a group of students from about 200 to 300 people but Those classes are all basic courses and I believe their are only about 5-7 classes in Texas State University that holds that amount of students. Texas State University has a very prestigious business school and they also have a very recognized education department. I also believe that Texas States Psychology programs are also well recognized as well.
Will enjoy being here Texas State University is in San Marcos and it is an incredible town. They have the a lake that runs right through the Texas State campus and San Marcos is right next to Austin which is amazing city as well. Also the campus is known for the Aqua arena springs which is a purified lake that is constantly being filtered. The water is so clear that you can see through it to the bottom of the lake. I was able to go on a tour boat their and the boat has glass floors so that you can see all of the fish and plant life in the lake as well.
Bang for the buck I have a credit card with Wells Fargo and i am able to use my debit card as my student I.D. and I can also link it with my school funds. For people who are applying for scholarships I would suggest this because a lot of times they will pay money directly to your school account and if you link your school card with your debit card you can use your scholarship money at any place you want. Also the stores all over San Marcos accept Bobcat Bucks witch is fake money from Texas State. My sister went to Texas State all the time and she said that a lot of restaurants and stores would let her pay her bills with Bobcat Bucks instead of money when she was a student in San Marcos. Also with the Texas State meal plans you get your meals by using swipes. You get a certain amount of swipes per semester from whatever meal plan you get and one swipe will completely pay for your meal. I know that they have plenty of fast food restaurants on campus including chic-fil-a in their cafeteria which will take a swipe to pay for your meal.
Tips for prospective students I would look into residential college dorm rooms which is when they put students who have the same classes in the same dorm rooms together because it is an incredible help for studying and getting to know hats going on around campus.
Great for these types of students Students interested in studying Business, Psychology and Education should consider Texas State University because they have amazing schools in those career fields.

Am enjoying being here San Marcos is a beautiful area with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the river and being outdoors. It is a bike-loving community and the hills will keep away the Freshman 15. You don't have to look far to enjoy yourself here.
Bang for the buck College is always expensive but if you're looking for a good deal then Texas State is your place. Your tuition pays for innumerable amenities including counseling, expansive rec center and student lawyers. This college really has it all.
Tips for prospective students If you're going to be living on-campus I suggest leaving your car at home and investing in a good road bike. Parking is a nightmare and it's easier to get around the city with two wheels. Also, take advantage of all of the recreational activities the the Outdoors Center offers as well as the student organizations. And lastly, take advantage of the tutoring lab as well as the writing center and math lab. If there is a subject you need help with there is always someone to help.
Great for these types of students If you're a motivated student who enjoys having a flourishing social life and being outdoors then this is probably the place for you. Also,

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning alot because I am a freshman and I feel that I have to attend all of my classes in order to get used to being on my own and doing things for myself. By going to my classes and actually paying attention I learned a lot of new interesting things even in my basics that I never paid attention to in high school. All of it is very helpful and useful to me as well.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying it here because the campus is nice and i like it. Even though it has a few hills and a lot of stairs it is a good work out and on a pretty day it is nice to be outside. I have made a lot of new friends here especially being out by the river on sunny days and getting my tan on. Many people are friendly here and they make you feel welcome which is one thing I really love about being here.
Bang for the buck Being at Texas State is not that expensive. It is a lot less cheaper than other universities and it is even as cheap as going to a community college no matter what major you pursue. With scholarships and student loans you will not have a problem with school.
Tips for prospective students If you plan or are thinking about coming to Texas state it is a good decision that you do because it is awesome here. People say that it is a party school but what college isn't? If you know how to discipline yourself and know when to study and then have fun you will be fine.
Great for these types of students I love Texas state and its a great school for any person to go to!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I really enjoy going to Texas State. It is the type of school that you can get more out of it than you put in. I always come out of class having learned something. My teachers are helpful and want me to do well.
Tips for prospective students Texas state is not one of those schools that you don't have to go to class and can get A's in all your classes. You have to want to be there and get a good education. All you have to do is care about your future and you will do well.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes I've taken so far are not to be taken lightly. You have to go to class, take notes and study. Some classes are easier than others depending on the teachers but in general if you care about doing well you can get a good grade. The school does have a few classes that are meant to weed out students who are only there to have a good time These can be a really big challenge but you can get through if you put the effort in.
Dorm Life The type of dorm you live in will completely dominate the typr of experience you will get. If you want to be left alone try living by yourself. But if you want to be social and hang out with other dorm residents try a more social dorm. It really depends on what you are looking for.
Food and Dining Like every school there are the good places to eat and bad places. Fortunately Texas State has a really big variety all over campus. There are quite a few chain food places around campus like Chick-fil-a, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Panda Express, and Einstein Brothers Bagels. If you live on campus you have to have a meal plan but you can pick how big a meal plan you have and there are tons of local places to eat just off campus as well.
What to do for fun There are so many different places to go around San Marcos. There are bars and dozens of coffee shops. There are also a half a dozen places to dance and let loose. On top of all that there are lots of local food places to eat of every kind and the river is always a fun and social place to get to know people.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I have been a student at Texas State University-San Marcos for almost 3 years. I have a BA in English from their Liberal Arts College and I am working on a BBA in Accounting from their McCoy College of Business. My experiences with both colleges has been wonderful. The professors are extremely knowledgeable and encouraging. You have to work hard and do the work to be successful. It is well worth it.
Tips for prospective students Make an appointment with your perspective adviser at the beginning and ending of each semester to make sure you are on track to meet your academic goals. If you are having difficulty, go to the SLAC lab in the library, they offer free tutoring. Complete reading and other assignments as they are given or ahead of time so you can identify questions or problems understanding the subject and do not be afraid to ask questions! That is why you are in college in the first place: to ask questions and get explanations.
Academic Rigor I have been in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Business, you have to put in the work to be successful and meet your goals, both while you are in school and when you graduate and are looking for employment.
Food and Dining Not a lot of choices, mostly fast food on campus and off.
What to do for fun Tons of activities: right on the river for tubing and swimming, live music both on and off campus, lots of places for sporting activities, etc.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Texas State is an amazing school with a campus full of great students and teachers! Bobcats are some of the friendliest people that you will ever meet and have a lot of pride for the school. The teachers are helpful and will help you make the best out of the course they are teaching.
Tips for prospective students My tip for a prospective student would be to bring sun screen and start working out! One of the favorite places among the students is the river that runs through the campus. Don't be surprised to see students hanging out there after a long week of classes. Texas State have a number of hills and stairs so be ready to feel the burn from walking to and from class.
Academic Rigor The teachers at Texas State are there to help you if you ask for help! Every teacher is required to hold office hours, so if there is something you don't quite understand, you are welcomed to talk to them during that time. The classes may be challenging but the teachers want to see you succeed!
Dorm Life You will meet some of your closest friends in the residence halls. You can choose from traditional to modified traditional to suite to super suite. The Resident Assistants and Directors are wonderful mentors and are there to assist you in anyway. Plus the residence halls hold different events for the residents ranging from lots of topics but they are always fun!
Food and Dining The choices of dining at Texas State rank high among other schools! They have buffet and a la carte dining halls. They also have dining facilities with Panda Express, Chick-Fil-A, Blimpie's and Starbucks!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of my favorite Texas State traditions is the Riverfest. Every year Texas State puts on a concert series at the river with performances by students and a headliner. In 2011, the Ying Yang Twins headlined Riverfest and in 2012 Yung Joc performed as the headliner. They also give away free things such as sunglasses and frisbees.
Clubs and Activities Texas State has over 300 student organizations ranging from academic and social based organizations. If you don't find an organization that interests you, you can create your own by meeting a few requirements. Texas State supports the organizations on campus by helping fund many of their events.
Campus Safety Texas State have their own police department on campus separate from the San Marcos police department. Once the sun goes down, Bobcat Bobby escorts students who are walking around campus alone to and from their destinations if you give them a call. There are also lamp post with emergency buttons that when pushed, a police officer will be at in minutes!

Food and Dining Tons of surrounding restaurants. Availability of fast food, and sit down in dine is immense. There is even a trailer food court near by, Dining halls on campus, and restaurants in student center.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Texas State has a great staff who are very helpful and educated. The students are awesome and everyone has great school spirt. And there is always something to do!
Tips for prospective students Always look up a professor on ratemyprofessor.com before you pick a class. Talk to other students as well, my favorite professors were advice from other students. Get involved and don't stay in your dorm all the time.
Academic Rigor It truly depends on the professor and how well they explain the material.
Dorm Life I was a transfer student so I've never had to live in the dorms. But heard it's fun!
Food and Dining I've never ate on campus but they have a Starbucks!
What to do for fun Greek life! River! Intramurals!
Bang for the buck I've been to 3 different colleges and this is by far the best fit! You get free transportation to school from the majority of the apartment complexes, unless you decide to drive. The new rec center is AWESOME, rock climbing wall, courts, and fitness classes. I've never had a professor that I felt like I knew more than them.
Great for these types of students Outgoing or those who want to break out of their shell. Great for adventurous people and staying fit. If you love live music San Marcos is great and Austin is right down the street. If you're over 21 this place is even more fun with plenty of bars for any type (country, rap, chill).
Clubs and Activities All stay very active.
Greek Life BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE!
Campus Safety If there is an incident on campus you get a text message to your phone letting you know immediately. The majority of classrooms also have digital signs that inform the professor of emergencies.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Texas State University has to be one of the best schools in Texas. It not only offers the feel of a big diverse campus but gives you the intimate one on one education you would receive at a private university. The classes may be big but the campus offers an unlimited amount of resources to help you be successful.
Tips for prospective students Best advice is if you are feeling lost in a class talk to the professor in their office hours. They are extremely friendly and more than happy to help you out. Take advantage of all the resources that offer help for students struggling in their classes they will help you prosper. As well as don't be overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of students and diversity within the school. Embrace it you will meet a lot of new faces and you will come to discover everyone is pretty much the same no matter what background you come from.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is up there. Professors take their work seriously and they always try to challenge their students to make them think above their level. The classes are difficult if you don't attend class and don't pay attention in lecture. The professors stimulate you to think higher than your basic understanding. They try and help you become more critical thinkers. The rigor is as hard as you make it if you put time and effort you will do well.
Dorm Life The best dorms to be in if you are an entering student would be a traditional style one. It is a much more friendly open environment. You meet a lot of new people because your sharing a lot of stuff with the people in your dorm. In a modified dorm there isn't that much interaction because all the amenities are within your room. In a traditional dorm you interact with people because everything is on the outside. There will always constantly be people in the lobby or in the study rooms so it easy to find someone to talk to. Everyone is hospitable and the Ra's will always be there to help you if you ever need anything. A traditional dorm is more like a family because by the end of the school year you get to know mostly everybody in your dorm and you become close with them.
Food and Dining The food isn't that bad surprisingly. There are a lot of options to chose from. The best dining hall by far on campus has to be Harris. It is the one that is most far away but, its buffet style so you can get as much food as your heart desires. Commons closed but they are reopening it in the Fall of 2012 so, incoming freshman will get that extra option. There are a lot of different places to pick from. There are five dining halls on campus and each you can use your meal swipes. Each dining hall has a variety of food options to pick from so you won't ever get bored of the same food.
What to do for fun Texas State is one of the best universities to attend because there is always activities going on. The school usually hosts different student activities on campus for students to go to. We also have the river that flows right through our campus which is amazing on hot days. We have Sewell Park and that is where we host events like River fest. Sewell is also where people can go to play beach volleyball, basketball, lay out, swim, canoe, or float the river. We have TMT which is Texas Music Theatre where students can go dancing on weekends and it is always packed on Thursday nights. The great thing about San Marcos too is that we're literally twenty minutes away from Austin. The football games are always super fun and there is always tailgating before a game where the sorority and fraternities set up and get the crowd going. We have the rec where you can workout and we have an indoor soccer field, basketball courts, and rock climbing wall. We offer a bunch of different fitness classes that are fun so you will never do the same old workout.
Bang for the buck The bookstores offer coupons to just about every place that is good to go to in San Marcos. As well as a lot of surrounding restaurants accept bobcat bucks so you wont have to use your cash if your running low or worried about spending money.
Clubs and Activities Texas State offers a tremendous amount of clubs and activities its just all about going out there and finding a club your interested in. There is a club for just about every interest you can think of.
Campus Safety The campus is safe. We have night time escort assistance if you don't want to walk from one end of the campus to the other. The city is pretty calm and the campus is usually quiet at night. The campus police are always there to help you if you need assistance.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Texas State is a fun school, of course, but is surprisingly filled with intellectual minds and free spirits that encourage each of us to fulfill our purpose, starting with an education. The professors urge the students to take initiative to make theories and learn in new ways by interacting with society and striving to do something that impacts us all. Texas State is the place where you will begin to wonder what's next.
Tips for prospective students Live on campus or in town. You can walk just about anywhere or use the bus. Austin is right down the road and is all that and a bag of chips when it comes to stuff to do, especially concerts. San Marcos is extremely relaxing and lovely and you may forget all about Austin while you're floating down the river with your friends.
Academic Rigor It's a place where the professors understand that life is unexpected, but that alone is what they expect to prepare you for and they intend on quality work and performance. You can make friends with your professor, it's not too big of a university for that connection. They want to help you and lead you in the right direction. Never be afraid to ask questions.
Dorm Life You will make a million friends. It's too fun in San Marcos not to! There is plenty to do to get away as well. The whole town is practically free wifi and there are many quiet areas all over town to relax.
Food and Dining Fun and casual dining rule in San Marcos and there are a few nicer things. But if you want to really experience dining, Austin is not too far away and there is a plethora of options in all price ranges.
What to do for fun concerts, river, festivals, skatepark, free txstate sports, tons of campus activities and organizations, great coffee shops, great record stores, tons of parties.
Bang for the buck You can get by around here without a million bucks. Most Texas State Students are from mid to low income families. We love to cook! Grab a beer and some wood for the fire.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Texas State is best-known for its river activities. People go to class with their swimsuits under their t-shirts and walk down to the river almost every day. There are several festivals throughout the year highlighting music.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Texas state is a great school with the focus on academic success, meeting new people, and enjoying your true college experiece. Texas State has the tools and resources for you to achieve your full academic potiential while have a relaxed fun-loving atmosphere all throughout campus.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest you just break out of your shell and get involved. Meeting new people and making new friends is a big part of the college experience. Prioritizing is also key. If you have a paper due on Monday, it isn't wise to party the whole entire weekend and procrastinate on the paper. Also, develop good studying habits before you come to college, it's a big part in doing well in class. Unlike high school, you actuall HAVE to study.
Academic Rigor Texas State has plenty of resources to make sure you succeed academically but it is up to you to take advantage of those resources. Just about every professor has office hours where you can go and meet with them if you have questions or to get one on one help. There is also the SLAC which helps you if you have trouble in certain classes. The Writing Center helps with your college writing courses, they review your paper and give you constructive feedback on how to improve and most of the time you even get a letter grade higher than you would've if you didn't go to the Writing Center
Dorm Life I had a tradtional dorm my first semester of college and it wasn't what I expected, I didn't really enjoy my dorm experience in the fall semester. In the spring semester, I got reassigned to a single suite style dorm, with my own personal bedroom. It's much more comfortable and big improvment from my previous dorm. There is a much more friendly atomosphere and lots of dorm activities.
Food and Dining There are certain places to eat on campus that I wouldn't suggest.. Overall the food isn't bad, but it could be better.
What to do for fun Laying out by the river or going to the rec are just some things I do for fun.

Go to Don's Fish Camp for the best college experience in tubing. It is closer to campus than New Braunfels and it is private property, so fewer cops.

Great for these types of students TX State is great for everyone. There is a very diverse population of students that attend TX State. There is a place for everyone, and the lines aren't drawn by race.

There are lots of club choices and activities to participate in: intramural sports, academic clubs, club sports, residence life groups, etc.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently a freshman here and I already feel like this University provides a great learning environment. I enjoyed all professors, they were very well educated in their fields and were able to teach the topics excellently. Other reviews from my peers were generally similar to my opinions. I only heard from a few friends of just a couple of there professors that they did not like and said that they made it hard to comprehend the subject. Overall I think this university is a great place to go to get any type of degree.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love being at Texas State. The campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and theirs organizations out there to fulfill anyone's interests. There are a few traditions here, not as many as I would like. One of the biggest and personally I think the most fun is the tailgating before the game. Also with our football team going D1 entering the WAC, I think next fall semester will be even more eventful.
Bang for the buck This school is fairly cheap compared to other major universities such as the University of Texas and Texas A&M, but it has its one unique qualities that make it just as great of a place to be. Its locations is one of them. It is between Austin and San Antonio making the trip to either city very easy which opens up a lot of things go out and do. The major aspect is that it has a river on campus, not many other schools could say that. Other than personal attributes, it have great benefits for education as well. The free help they provide for there students is very beneficial especially for students who pay there own way threw school and done have to extra cash to pay for tutors. Texas State provides there own!
Tips for prospective students Apply for your dorms as early as you can so you are able to get the one you want. I had a lot of friends that waited and ended up either getting one on the bottom of their list of preferences, or not one at all. Also get involved. Very important. Getting involved in as much things as you can and still be able to manage your time wisely which is a must. You HAVE to be able to manage your time well if you want to be successful, and not just here but any school at that. But getting involved will help you meet other people and make your time at college just that much better.
Great for these types of students Students who can manage their time wisely and who are responsible and can put there priorities straight. There is always something thats going on in San Marcos and you need to be responsible and disciplined enough to keep everything together. Also its great for outgoing people and people who like to have fun because other than its a great school, the people there and the activities there are great!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am absolutely learning a lot! The educators are amazing and forth coming to helping the students in whatever they need. I have yet to encounter a professor that is not passionate about what they teach.
Am enjoying being here I love the feeling of a small town that is why I personally chose San Marcos! The town is beautiful as is the campus. You have the river to go relax whenever you want and you have Austin and San Antonio at the tip of your fingers for a great night!
Bang for the buck Tuition has gone up but needless to say Texas State University has given back to the students. Recently, new dorm halls are being built as a new undergrad building and they both look like they are going to be amazing!
Tips for prospective students Buy some tennis shoes! Texas State is home of the hills therefore I recommend you try to dress as comfortable as possible and just enjoy your undergrad years; they are the best years of your life!
Great for these types of students Texas State is a great fit for every type of individual! It is know as a party school but believe me it can have the chill mood environment as well.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot This school seemed pretty serious about your education. They are committed to helping you achieve everything your working for.
Will enjoy being here I loved the campus! The environment was so friendly and everything was so nice and big.
Bang for the buck As for money i'm sure it will be worth the money. I have already applied and I am waiting for a response. This is my number one school and they offer plenty of scholarships as long as your willing to work for them.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much since starting my first semester. My major is Biology and I can honestly say, my professors make coming to class well worth it. They are so excited to work with their students, and they make learning so fun.
Am enjoying being here My classes are great, my instructors are phenomenal, and the atmosphere is a feeling of home. That's why I love Texas State, because they are so welcome and they encourage you to stay and just make new friends and have fun.
Bang for the buck Absolutely, I don't know any other top ranked university in Texas that has such an amazing higher learning facility an affordable tuition. It's true, you do get a lot of bang for your buck.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to just be crazy and express how you feel, your in college now. These are going to be the best times of your life, so make the best of it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The trick to any college is putting the time and energy into your work and studies. TxState is no diffrent. While the majority of professors are knwoledgable and want you to learn and enjoy their subjects, there are quite a few 30-35% who are here for the paycheck and do not care about your students. It all boils down to you, You are the deciding factor in what you learn or not.
Am enjoying being here I dont regret going here but this isnt any source of pride for me. this school is fine. Yes its grown alot and construction is a hassle but its not bad. Just like your studys this place boils down to what you want to do and how much work you are willing to put into it. I have had some great times here and met some really interesting people. The classes are about average for a typical 4-year university. While this place doesn't stand out, it isnt a bad place.
Bang for the buck TxState is your average university for a slightly raised price. Its not too bad but its also not that good either. tuition is allways raising for every school so this place isnt on the terrible side yet.
Tips for prospective students 1st- Go to class. No substitute believe me.
2nd- Go to your teachers office hours. The majority of them really want to help and are a vastly under used resource.
3rd- Get involved. it is really easy to fall into a habbit of staying in your dorm room doing nothing. Besides getting involved looks good on a resume.Great for these types of students If you are looking for an average place then Texas State University- San Marcos is for you. There is nothing great here but nothing terrible either.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes can be either really big or very small. In either case, you learn a lot from both teachers and students. being in a big class allows you to have more study buddies and more people to ask for help or for notes. Smaller classes allow for more individual help and personal group activities and such. Also, in case you are having trouble learning in class or doing homework, there's a tutoring center at the library open to everyone.
Am enjoying being here The environment-friendly atmosphere, and views from the top of the hill make everyday a beautiful one. Having the river and the downtown area so close make it easy to go have fun at any time of the day or on weekends. Also, there is a lot of diversity on campus, so one can feel comfortable walking around school. Finally, the unforgettable, cafeteria food is actually really great! There is a wide variety of foods offered on campus. Its healthy, home-made, and delicious!
Bang for the buck It as as expensive as many other colleges, but the bang comes when your financial aid and grants come in. Texas State gave me more money than any other school. They are not stingy with scholarships and grants, they are actually generous. It is worth the big amount you pay at the beginning.
Tips for prospective students There's a lot of stairs, so be prepared to work your legs. Going from one place to another, you are bound to encounter at least one set of stairs, Though most people are willing to over-look that because after a while, not only do you get used to it, you also end up with nice calves! Also, if you plan on attending, make sure you apply for housing and classes early!!
Great for these types of students Best for people who want to go out and have fun, meet new people, swim at the river, and want to get blood pumping on your way to class. Texas State seems to be huge, but its actually rather small and warm.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I thoroughly enjoy all of my classes at Texas State. My professors are all very willingly to help me when I need it and promptly respond to my emails. All of my professors have PhDs in their fields of expertise which makes me feel confident that what they are teaching me is correct. This was not always the case in my high school career, unfortunately. Texas State University it so much more than just a party school; I feel like I am earning a genuine education that I would not want to get anywhere else.
Am enjoying being here The student body here is full of some of the most respectful individuals that I have ever encountered. I have met some lifelong friends through my residence hall's activities and short conversations in elevators. I have managed to have some of the best times of my lief here without getting caught up in the infamous party scene that Texas State is notorious for. I absolutely love my university and would not dream of transferring anywhere else.
Bang for the buck In comparison to other universities that I considered attending, Texas State had the most reasonable cost of tuition. They have many scholarships and financial aid oppurtunities available for students who need it. I am one of those students with such needs. My mother is disabled and father is struggling through the falling construction industry. I have to pay for my entire college career by myself, and Texas State has allowed me to affordably work towards my future.
Tips for prospective students There are many seniors at my old high school that are contemplating attending Texas State. I would advise that if someone wants to go here then attend a Bobcat Day and campus tour. I came on a campus tour the summer before my senior year of high school and was immediately hooked. I could not stop picturing myself walking through the Quad and admiring the gorgeous campus. My friends and I going swimming in the river after a hard day of exams. People just need to come get an official tour of what Texas State University has to offer, and I am sure they will be as hooked as I was.
Great for these types of students Texas State University has one of the most diverse student bodies of any college in Texas. It offers exposure to all types of people and walks of life. I recommend it to students who are either not very worldly, or have always felt like an outcast from their high school's student body. Also, if a student wishes to graduate from college with Honors, then I woul highly recommend the Honors Program at TSU. Unlike most colleges, TSU's Honors Program is not major or department specific. The program offers classes that satisfy required courses and also courses that are major specific. The Honors Program will expose students to various majors and has classes capped off at seventeen students. The small class size was a major selling point for me because I learn better in a more intimate environment with my professor and fellow students.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The accounting program seems a little intense, but I also feel that I can learn a lot from the students and professors.
Will enjoy being here It's far enough away from home that I can get the full college experience, but also close enough so I can get home quickly if I need to.
Bang for the buck The tuition isn't so bad since I'm an in-state applier and there are plenty of scholarships that can help me.
Tips for prospective students Don't waste all your time and money at the outlets, study and get good grades!!
Great for these types of students Students who want to get a great education and have fun.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Leaps and bounds better than a community college, but the fact that 3/4 of my classes are in lecture halls in not a good thing. This isnt a private school but lecture halls are not the best learning environment.
Am enjoying being here Aside from the frat dudes that plague some of the hot spots around town its a great college environment. It's a rare thing living in Texas and not driving all the time. I love being close to campus and a tavern. San marcos is San Antonio trying to keep it weird.
Bang for the buck Fairly good deal, with all the financial aid I received, although not as affordable as ACC, the structure it provides is worth the added expense.
Tips for prospective students Attend all your classes and do all your homework. I messed up my first year in college because i didnt complete assignments and have barely passed some classes when I shouldnt have had a problem and made B's when I was getting high A's on my exams.
Great for these types of students If you love being outdoors San Marcos has an amazing spring fed river system that offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities mainly tubing but I own a kayak so I take advantage of being 1 mile from the river. There is also a solid disc golf course on campus, although not as well-designed as the courses in Austin but its still good. If you're looking for a school that's more laid-back than UT this is a great choice.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Coming from ACC for two years, Texas State is a big big change! The classes are more challenging and the teachers actually care about you and are available to help you if you're struggling in class.
Am enjoying being here As a junior transfer student, I would rather not be around a ton of frat/sor students but I think that's just college life!
Bang for the buck Texas State is significantly more expensive than ACC but so is every other college in Texas so I really can't complain.
Tips for prospective students Rent your textbooks online! Many teachers post their syllabus before the semester starts on TRACS (their online teaching system) so it's easy to get textbooks before class begins!
Great for these types of students ALL!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot All the professors I've had here really know their subject and also truly care about their students. This is one of my favorite aspects of Texas State. I've never had a professor that wasn't willing to help me once I asked. Not only have I learned a lot in school but Texas State gives you lots of opportunities to learn outside skills in clubs and organizations.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful. If being in a nice area is important to you then this school is for you. It is right between Austin and San Antonio so you have many opportunities for city life activities as well as the small town feel San Marcos has.
Bang for the buck I came from a community college and my first tuition bill was pretty hard to look at since my tuition at the community college was around $500 a semester. However, the tuition is very reasonable for a public university.
Tips for prospective students Use www.ratemyprofessor.com to decide who to take class from. The reviews will give you a good idea about the professor and at least give you a warning as to if the class will be difficult or not.
Great for these types of students Texas State is very diverse! It's really not one way or the other. There are many types of people here, including a long list of local characters.

Bang for the buck Good tuttion and affordable.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor i'm a psychology major at texas state and i have throroughly enjoyed my classes here! majority of professors here are ready and eager to teach you. as any college will have, texas state has classes that are better in certain subjects and there are multiple teachers for the same class. i suggest using a site like pickaprof so you know exactly what kind of class you are getting into before you commit.
i have had nothing but positive experiences with the advisors and the tutors are always willing to go the extra mile. between study sessions, dedicated professors and excellent tutors texas state has endless possibilities for learning.Am enjoying being here San Marcos is a very friendly and welcoming city to move into. When I first moved here I remember being scared at first, not knowing what to expect or even how to get to the local HEB! My fears quickly vanished as I began makning friends and learning about all of the treasures San Marcos has to offer. I enjoy the outdoors and personally take part in the countless kayaking, floating and hiking spots there are all around the area. The people are friendly, the natural spring water feels amazingly cool on a hot Texas day and it's small enough to cruise around without completely getting lost. What's not to love?
Bang for the buck san marcos is a relatively small town and therefore you don't end up spending a lot of money on gas because everything you need is within a 10 mile radius. this includes the outlet malls as well which has many stores with low prices which is great for college students who can't exactly afford to spend an infinite amount of money on frivolous items. there are also many local restaurants around town and a square with bars and shops to keep you busy for hours. texas state classes themselves and the apartments/houses around the area are quite affordable as well.
Tips for prospective students students should enter college with an open mind want to learn and soak up everything they can. don't enter college thinking you know the world but rather be willing to add on to the things you do know and learn and become familiar with the things that you don't know much about because this is your only time to do so! college is a blast if you allow it to be and being able to turn an interest into your own career is the best experience anyone can ask for. i recommend getting to know your professors so you aren't just a face in the crowd and never hesitate to go to your professors office hours; they count on you coming!
Great for these types of students texas state is great for almost any kind of student. for the outgoing and sociable there are rivers, bars, bowling alleys, movie theatres, and many other types of entertainment. for the more private people there are libraries and quiet-only study cafes which are very charming! i have met many different kinds of people and san marcos is an extremely diverse city. i have thoroughly enjoyed my college experience here and can't wait to continue my journey.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The first year isn't difficult, it's a lot like High School, but once you get into your major you start to learn a ton!
Am enjoying being here I hated high school, I couldn't wait to get out. Being on campus, on my own and a part of the bobcat family truly have been the best years of my life so far! People on campus are really up for fun and are friendly!
Bang for the buck Great teachers for a price that is better than you'll find anywhere. Top 10 colleges have good teachers but they're rarely in their classes and the TA does all the work. Here the classes reach a max of 350 but you still are able to talk to your teachers. Not to mention that Top 10 colleges have rated our campus higher than theirs because our teachers do such a great job!
Tips for prospective students Live in the dorms, especially Res College, you'll get to know almost 300 people for a cheaper price and have classes with them. It's great location, we have a river, and we're in between Austin and San Antonio so you have options for a good weekend!
Great for these types of students Great for students who are definitely willing to make friends or else the campus experience will be wasted on them.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I believe I will learn a lot at this school. But that's because I have always wanted to learn. This question depends upon the reviewer's own definition of learning. To be honest, you will get back what you put in. If you put in the effort, you can invariably learn anywhere.
Will enjoy being here The campus is beautiful; there seems to be an overall positive energy going on. I do however take slight issue with the elevation and largeness of the place. I'm a transfer student from the flat lands, and I'm used to walking on level ground. But overall I'm very excited about going here.
Bang for the buck The in-state tuition is slightly more than at my previous institution, but I do believe it is on par with the average tuition rate nationally. I am paying extra to go here for the opportunities that are now open to me, so there is value in that.
Tips for prospective students Definitely visit the area and see if this is school is at the right pace for you. If you want a small-town feel and seeming humble atmosphere, this is for you. Of course you should also check if they offer your major!
Great for these types of students I think this school is meant for hard-working students, despite its party school reputation. I'm not sure where that comes from, because from what I can tell, academia is placed very highly here.

Am enjoying being here Love the school it is beautiful!! Teachers in the McCoy college of business are really nice to each student. People are really nice and living in the dorms isn't that bad you meet a lot of new wonderful friends.
Tips for prospective students Always have a schedule on what you need to have done by the end of your day. Ask for help your professors will help you, 4th floor of the library helps a lot. Balance out fun with studying by schedules, they really do help I promise.
Always ask for what you can do for extra credit, always do the extra credit. Attendance can always help you, even if it is not mandatory attend class so if you even need a little boost in your grades then it might help.Great for these types of students Texas State University is great for any student who loves a beautiful relaxing place to study, and someone who wants to have a great experience for higher education.
