    Did learn a lot

I only completed a year of general studies at the U of M, but the range of choices I had was great. In each class I had to work for my grades, but when the year was over, I felt like I had learned a lot.

    Did enjoy being here

The school and the city of Missoula are just great. Everyday, there was some sort of activity going on in the UC or out on the Oval. The students were constantly being encouraged to join clubs, groups, or sports and to participate in school rallies and activities. And there were tons of things to do off campus as well, such as hiking, shopping, attending the farmer's market, and many other activities.

    Bang for the buck

For some students from out-of-state, the cost was a bit high, but the education and social opportunities offered to us made up for it.

    Tips for prospective students

When you get to school, it is not hard to find people that are interested in the same things that you are, you just have to get out and get involved in the things that interest you. Challenge yourself with all of the classes, activities and new people that the University has to offer.

Great for these types of students

The University is a welcoming place to anyone and everyone, and there are majors for all interests. The people have intense school spirit and take pride in the school, but it also seems to have a very laid back and comfortable atmosphere. This school would be a good place for anyone.

    Am learning a lot

The courses I have taken helped me to develop and expand on the skill I already had in high school. This is a tremendous help. I find that I can recall this information at will and I believe I will retain what I have learned this past semester.

    Am enjoying being here

Originally, UM was not where I intended to go. However, since attending I cannot think of a place I would rather be. Missoula and UM feel like home. I feel like the entire campus and the people that live and work there are now my new home and family.

    Bang for the buck

As a Montana resident, I find tuition and expenses to be very affordable considering what I get in return. I am getting the best education without ever leaving my home state. Many of the people on my floor are from out of state and they all say it is cheaper for them to go to UM than to stay in there own state! UM is definitely worth the money.

    Tips for prospective students

#1 Be on top of your game. Apply for deadlines early whether those are on housing deadlines, financial aid, or scholarships.
#2 Use your resources. Professors and TA are there to help and to make your life easier. My TA's have been so incredibly helpful, and most them know the ins and outs at UM.

Great for these types of students

Everyone. UM is such a varied type school. No matter what type of student you are, UM will have something for you. As a liberal arts college, there are of course all the art anyone could ask for. However, for those of you that are like me, there is also infinite possibilities in the world of math and science, English and literature.

    Am learning a lot

The professors in the business school help you learn to think critically.

    Am enjoying being here

My involvement at the University has really helped me feel at home here. It's a big enough school that you can always find something to do (and if you can't, it's probably your own fault!) but has a great and supportive community so that you don't feel like you're falling through the cracks.

    Bang for the buck

Excellent education at state school prices!

    Tips for prospective students

Come check out the campus, spend a couple of days here so you can get a feel for the different clubs and activities available on campus and so you can best explore Missoula.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who wants a high bang for your buck. The University of Montana is an excellent school!

    Am learning a lot

I am learning more about myself than usual. I'm from Southern California and I know that life can be tough to keep up with high school and studies plus social life! It's tough! Luckily, when I came to Missoula Montana, it was more calming to be in a small town. It has a lot of things to do and keeps you on track with your studies. It has many programs and events so you're never bored.

    Am enjoying being here

I do miss home a lot but the people are warm and welcoming and if you go in the right group you're on the right track. It's a nice place just you have to find the small and simple things in life that makes it worthwhile.

    Bang for the buck

This place is probably doesn't have a lot of scholarships but it does help you a lot in financial aid. It helps you get a job and doesn't make the work hours too bad. I know a lot about this campus just by walking around and it's wonderful!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't close yourself off. I don't mean go party and drink all the time, I mean just focus on studies but there are other ways of having fun on this campus. Like dancing, watching movies, rock climbing, and many more. It's fantastic. Or go to the UC center and there are many things to do. If you feel that you're having trouble or just need someone to run to. Look-up my name on facebook and I'll be glad to talk and hang out with you.

Great for these types of students

People who are feeling like city life is a bit much for them. Needing a place to go away and not on vacation but some place where you can focus and not feel like you constantly want to see your friends from your hometown. Somebody who wants calm and quiet for once.

I will be attending this fall and the staff at the university have been very helpful it explaining the details of everything to me to make sure I make it through in four years and don't waste any money or time.

    Am enjoying being here

Most beautiful place in the inland Northwest, you have a view, fresh air, the city life, and yet you still have the country life where you can just take a stroll through nature and not be far from the campus.

Great for these types of students

    Academic Rigor

definitely more focused here on learning the how to's rather than information that the teachers would agree, you will never use.

    Dorm Life

the dorms can be a little cramped depending but you have the whole city as your campus and with a few arrangements you can open the rooms up quite a bit.

    Food and Dining

the university dining experience is amazing, always have a great vegan selection in the main buffet style court. espresso shops everywhere and another food court in the main study area makes diet easy for students.

    What to do for fun

this university is one of the most beautiful, lively campuses in the u.s. it's a very eclectic atmosphere and home to a variety of students. the curriculum is not as challenging as some schools, and some of the teachers are not as dedicated to teaching as they could be.

    Tips for prospective students

be prepared for extreme heat, plummeting cold, and lots of partying. the town of missoula is a lot of fun and a very safe place in general, but the party atmosphere is very apparent. it's sometimes hard to stay focused on your education with so much going on in your social life.

    Academic Rigor

the classes aren't as difficult as i expected and there isn't too much homework for most courses. as long as you stay organized, a 4.0 is easily attainable.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are small, expensive, and not very well kept sometimes. they are extremely convenient, however, to get to classes.

    Food and Dining

there's a fair amount of dining options on or near campus, but a lot of them close very early.

    What to do for fun

there's a million things going on every weekend, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and hiking or going to lakes in the summer. it's a great area to have fun in the wilderness.

    Bang for the buck

it's very cheap for in state and it's a great school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

everyone hangs out on the oval during the warmer months. a lot of time you'll see frisbee and slack-lining in the sun. when it snows there's a tradition of skiing to class or putting on swimsuits and running around campus. it's a really fun place to be.

Great for these types of students

    liberal, artistic, outdoorsy.

    Clubs and Activities

there aren't a lot of campus activities that are promoted.

    Greek Life

i haven't participated in greek life, but it's a popular are for some students.

    Campus Safety

missoula is a very safe town and there's always security available to escort people around if needed.

the university of montana is a fantastic school. they have great programs and amazing staff. the location is a perfect environment for learning.

    Tips for prospective students

the university is a great place to come learn, just make sure you attend class as often as you can, most professors don't post lecture notes online so the only way to get the information is to go to class.

    Academic Rigor

students here are very driven towards their academics and there are always people here willing to lend a helping hand if you're having trouble understanding a class.

    Dorm Life

getting along with your roommate is imperative because a lot of time is spent in your room. don't be afraid to get to know your roommate before you get to school and ask questions. it'd be better to try to get a new roommate before school starts than to be scrambling to find a new one during first semester.

    Food and Dining

the food zoo is the main dining hall, and they normally have good food. sometimes they try some new dishes that are a little weird, but for the majority, they provide good, healthy food. they have a vegetarian line as well as a global line. there are other places to eat on campus such as pizza hut, jus chillin, bakery, famous daves, doc's sandwich shop, and the cascade country store.

    What to do for fun

for fun there are always sporting events on campus. the football games in the fall are hugely popular, and students get in for free. during the winter there are the basketball and volleyball games and during the spring there's lacrosse. there are also many clubs such as intervarsity, language clubs, and many more.

    Bang for the buck

the university's tuition plan, while still expensive, is much more affordable than other large universities. in-state tuition was about $13,000 a year, and out of state was about $27,000 a year. while still up there, the tuition is definitely worth the education.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

an unusual tradition on campus is every halloween night, the rock climbing club scales the clock tower and places a pumpkin on the very top. also, there is a 95 year old tradition of having a forester's ball at the end of january.

Great for these types of students

the university has a very large glbt community. they are very supportive and offer their services to anyone who is having trouble or struggling. they do not feel threatened because of who they are, and so are able to live happily.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many different clubs and activities on campus. for every major, and even minors. the clubs led by students and many play a large part in the community.

    Greek Life

the greek life on campus is not very large, but the fraternities and sororities are very active in the community and donate a lot of time and money to various charities.

    Campus Safety

i have never felt unsafe on campus. the campus is fairly small, but even so, if you are walking alone at night, you can call campus safety, and an office will either come walk with you, or come pick you up in their golf cart.

The University of Montana is a great place for people who enjoy beautiful scenery and the outdoors. This University is an inviting place to attend to get a good education and make long lasting friends. I would recommend this school to anybody with confidence.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tip I have is to have warm clothing for the cold.

    Academic Rigor

I can't rate their academic rigor too well since I have only completed one semester so far.

    Food and Dining

The food tastes very well but personally for me there is not a good amount of healthy choices. However there are a good amount of places on campus that stay open a bit late so when your studying you have somewhere to go for food.

    What to do for fun

    Am learning a lot

I find that all of my classes provided new information and built off my high school education rather than simply repeating it.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is wonderful and very comfortable, however I'm used to a smaller city than Missoula so sometimes the size of the city is overwhelming.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is much more reasonable than other instate universities.

    Tips for prospective students

The community feel of Missoula is very strong. The university is a very important part of the city both because of its benefits to the economy but also because of the pride it brings Missoula. Be ready to be apart of something greater than yourself.

Great for these types of students

The University of Montana is good school that provides numerous opportunities to students. The faculty in my department, political science, is excellent. However, like most schools, one must truly delve into campus life in order to learn more. Developing relationships with instructors is key to learning at Montana.

    Am enjoying being here

Missoula is a great town to go to school in. However, unless you are an avid outdoorsman, or are twenty-one years of age, the city can be quite limited. That said, the city is beautiful, it feels bigger than it is, there is a great mentality with the people, and you'll be hard pressed to find a better backdrop for your education.

    Bang for the buck

If you are in-state, this school may be the best bang for your buck outside of Wyoming. Coming from out of state, I rushed through my undergraduate degree in order to save some money since tuition has increased and state funding has decreased since I've been here. There are also numerous opportunities for funding your education through the community or the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Develop relationships with your professors and understand that they are people and like to have fun as well. The more you interact with the instructors the more you will get out of school.

Great for these types of students

If you enjoy the outdoors this is your school. The Pharmacy program is top-notch and I was very impressed with the Political Science faculty.

The University of Montana is in a great location. Missoula, Montana has lots of outdoor opportunities and is a safe and beautiful area to study. I have met lots of students here from diverse backgrounds and the faculty are friendly and helpful.

    Bang for the buck

There are a lot of scholarships available at the University of Montana and the area is a relatively inexpensive place to live as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of the community. Missoula is a small town and people here are friendly and helpful. Also take advantage of scholarships which the university offers.

Great for these types of students

Someone looking for a quieter, non-distracting place to study, at a University that has some excellent programs and a community feel.

    Will learn a lot

The programs they offer in music and business are fantastic! And their music program is an excellent one.

    Will enjoy being here

There are lots of concerts, events, and opportunities here and there is no problem keeping yourself busy!

    Bang for the buck

The cost of living in Montana is generally low, and even out of state tuition isn't ridiculous. It is totally worth the money paid to experience a great music program, not to mention the other courses they have to offer.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There is skiing, bands to join, sports, and several other opportunities to involve yourself in campus life.

Great for these types of students

This is music geek heaven, and those involved in business or nursing should definitely go here.

I am learning a lot about how to be myself again. I came here because of the low price of college compared to California but it also makes you work hard. I never ever regret applying and accepting because it's a really chill place to be.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be quick to go into sororities or crazy parties. If you really want to fit in, try not fitting in at all and usually you find your way into a group or affiliation. Don't take things too personally when it comes to academics, because if you do you end up feeling super sad and that's no way to live!

    Academic Rigor

They give you lots of schoolwork later in the year. Usually you cruise on by during the first two weeks but sometimes they have really hard classes! Don't give up though because there are TAs and teachers to help!

    Dorm Life

I gave this a 4 because it's actually not bad. It has all the basic essentials and it's quiet depending on what dorm you pick. Pantzer is the best one of all of them!

    Food and Dining

I gave this a 3 because I think 2 makes the food sound like it's mystery food which isn't true. It's actually good food but sometimes they do get repetitive or give you like a french toast casserole which isn't good. Could be due to the fact that sometimes they don't have a cook!!

    What to do for fun

Hiking the M, swimming, walking about the trails, River Rafting, Water tubing (basically on the water and going down the river by a tube), Gym, movies, first friday, hang out at Five Valley Church of Christ on Sundays, Make snowmen, snow angels (when it's snowing obviously), and much much more!

The campus is absolutely stunning. The professors are superb and passionate about their subjects. The people make the environment, here in Missoula, and the way they make it is BEAUTIFUL.

    Tips for prospective students

Come here if you're not too into frat parties. Come here if you want to expand your knowledge and meet true individuals. If you have a group orientated mindset, don't come here. Come here if you want to be academically challenged, especially if you're studying anything that has to do with liberal arts. Come to the University of Montana if you really want to find yourself in your college years. You WILL learn to love Missoula and the fascinating bunch of people it harbors. The oval on campus seems to me like my front yard and I don't even live on campus. The hospitality everywhere is so inviting, you won't want to leave. I don't!

    Academic Rigor

I just took a 100 level Liberal Studies class that honestly should have been a 300 level. The professor is the chair of the Liberal Studies department and the essays assigned were challenging. Questions like 'What kind of statement about life does Tolstoy seem to be saying in The Death Of Ivan Ilych?'. The school pushes you to ask yourself what you want out of life and how important matters are to you, and which are most important.

    Dorm Life

I never lived in the dorms, but all of my friends did this past year. They are like any other dorm life. Full of parties and immature freshmen. The dorms themselves are nice and there is a wide variety for students to choose to live in.

    Food and Dining

The food is incredible! The Food Zoo, which is where most freshmen with meal plans eat is a huge marketplace of scrumptious meals! They use local beef, wheat, vegetables and fruit. They have a vegetarian section every day. They staff there is completely lovable and the environment perfect. The meal plans themselves are affordable too so that is a definitely plus!

    What to do for fun

MUSIC. Missoula is full of incredibly talented local musicians. There is always a live music event somewhere around town, every day of the week. In the summer there are farmer's markets where local farmers and crafters sell the fruits of their talents. The bar scene is awesome if you're into that, the wilderness around us is beautiful, you can hike anywhere and swim everywhere.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a huge oval of grass right in the middle of campus. All the buildings face it and it's beautiful. It's where everyone lays down in the sunshine to do their homework, play folf, tan, and chill with their friends.

Great for these types of students

Individuals. Lovers of learning. Music lovers. Artistic people. Students interested in law or liberal studies. Environmental enthusiasts. People who love tight knit communities. People who love breakfast. Students who want to come back their sophomore year.

Fantastic school. I love the campus, classes, and people. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the career advising center if you need help deciding on a major, they're rockstars.

    Dorm Life

Aber and Jesse halls are rather small, but I live in Aber and am loving it all the same. Miller and Craig and excellent halls.

    Food and Dining

The Food Zoo does its best, but gets a little old.

    What to do for fun

So many things to do for fun - hiking, biking, swimming, rafting, rock climbing, you name it. Hit up Zoo town.

    Campus Safety

You should be aware - there have been problems with rapes on campus this past year. However the school is taking significant measures to try and stop this.

It's a good school for certain fields, like Liberal Arts and Business Management. It's decent for Gen Ed courses as well. It's not so good for other specific fields.

    Academic Rigor

    Dorm Life

    Shitty.

    Food and Dining

Decent Food in the Food Court in the UC, crappy food at the Food Zoo.

The University of Montana is an amazing school because of it's location, diversity, and the unique programs they offer. I don't feel lost in the crowd at UM, and I have gotten to know my professors. There are so many excellent opportunities for all students to do adventurous things or join new groups, and make new friends.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in chapters, clubs, or groups. Really get to know your professors, make them know who you are by always asking questions or visiting them in their office hours. It's important to have teachers know you so they can write recommendation letters for graduate school. Get to know your classmates and have study groups.

    What to do for fun

Take advantage of the Outdoor Program that takes you on weekend trips to Yellowstone or biking through the desert in Utah, there are activities for everyone, experienced or beginner. Soak up the sun on the grass around the oval when you can or hike up to The M for a great view. Hit up one of the many local breweries in town to relax a little.

It's really a beautiful campus. This campus has just about everything to offer, including a pretty good cafeteria, great opportunities to get involved on campus and in town, and has very interactive teachers. The campus is close to downtown, but you will need a ride to get to the mall and shopping centers.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to keep on track of your grades and create good study habits before attending. While the classes are very interesting, the homework in some is rather rigorous. However, in many classes your only homework is to make sure you read the content, so you really have to be able to discipline yourself and sit down and do it. Also, get involved on campus. You will make friends quickly and build your networks.

    Academic Rigor

Much of it is self- induced. The only homework I have really had so far is math homework online that is due about once a week, discussions for reading, and taking notes on reading. The reading usually isn't quizzed, but is still expected to know. Some classes have homework, but most have tests, and only tests. Thus, studying is vital.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are a great way to make friends, and the rooms are very nice. However, make sure to set boundaries with your roommates around the first week so that if any case, you can refer to this during problems. Friends aren't hard to come by here, and the halls for the dorms are friendly, but usually a little louder during the night.

    Food and Dining

For a college campus, the food here is pretty good. The meal plan is reasonably priced, but food in the University Center is a little more pricey. The food zoo has a variety of foods, and they change their menu every day throughout breakfast (they have a waffle bar on Sundays), lunch and dinner, but it does tend to get old. The food zoo is the most popular place to eat on campus because it is so cheap if you live on campus. However, with a sushi bar and vietnamese take- out in the UC, it may be a good idea to skip a day or two in the food zoo.

    What to do for fun

You can go downtown and walk around, or there is always the mall and going out to eat. Intramural sports are popular because there sometimes isn't much to do on campus, especially in the winter and if you don't have a car. What my friends and I usually end up doing on Fridays or weekends is going hiking, shooting, or just sitting and watching movies on Netflix.

    Bang for the buck

It's pretty cheap if you are in-state, but out of state is a little pricey. It's worth it if your major is forestry, wildlife, or anything really wilderness- related, or psychology, but I haven't seen much in terms of mathematics or language arts. The room and board is a pretty good deal in terms of what you get with the cafeteria, cable, internet, and heating. Also, if you live in Aber or Jesse Halls, they have a kitchen on the 11th floor you can use to cook your own food as long as it isn't meat.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Forester's Ball is like Homecoming, but a lot cheaper. It is a very big deal and everyone is invited, but if you are a Forestry student and help out with the Forestry club, you get a discount. The ROTC Dining Out is not very well- known and is exclusive to ROTC cadets and their dates as well as Military Science instructors. It is, as described by cadets, a prom on steroids. Every Halloween you will see a pumpkin on the tip of the Main Hall, and nobody ever seems to catch the vigilante who does this.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are very in- tune with nature. The main thing to do here is hike and ski/ snowboard, so if you are more into the city this may not be the school for you. The school's students and staff are very liberal. It's a good school for more hands- on studying in terms of science- related majors as we have research labs as well as wilderness right next to the campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Intramurals are big. Intramural Frisbee and Softball are participated in a lot. Also, on sunny days you will see a few people who will set up a tightrope between two trees next to the Grizzly Statue. This ends up being a big activity on campus. The oval is also packed full of students on sunny days. Just as well, biking is very big on campus, whether it is for leisure or to get around campus, so be careful where you walk!

    Greek Life

I'm not too knowledgeable about Greek Life. All I know is that it is there. It isn't very big on campus, but there are houses that you can live in and there are Sororities and Fraternities. Keep in mind that if you plan on joining a Fraternity or Sorority, you will want to look into them.

    Campus Safety

It's pretty safe. Granted, there have been some safety mishaps, but Campus security is pretty good for being there when you need them. Be cautious in terms of alcohol and drugs, just as you would need to on any college campus. If you see someone with alcohol poisoning, notify campus security and don't let them sit there alone. Whether you have been drinking with them or not, you will not get into trouble for alcohol intoxication as long as you do not have alcohol in your possession.

    Tips for prospective students

You must visit the campus orientation with your parents. They give a lot of information and tour of the campus. Apply for financial aide as soon as possible.

    Dorm Life

The rooms are clean and there seems to be more storage. There are several washing machines and dryers available.

the campus is stunning in winter. the faculty want to see you succeed. food services offers this awesome thing called bear hugs that your parents can buy and it gets sent to you; they often have treats and other good stuff.

    Tips for prospective students

sign up for classes that you want to take and not just ones for your major. it does get chilly, so bring your north face jacket. enjoy your freshman year, and meet a lot of people.

    Academic Rigor

some classes are harder and require more than others, but you learn a lot. just do what your teacher wants you to do, and you'll be fine. if you need help, go to their office hours or send them an email.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is pretty good. personally, i enjoy the twin halls, aber and jesse. they have plenty of room and underbed storage. the ra's are nice, and they'll say to you if they see you around campus.

    Food and Dining

there aren't a whole lot of healthy food options on campus. you can buy a salad or a cup of peaches with your meal plan, but other than that your only other option is the food zoo for assorted fruits and salads. the food zoo is good, but it gets old after a while.

    What to do for fun

um has a pool, gym, and rockwall; there are also pool tables in the university center. lots of people hike the m for fun as well. there's a dance at the beginning of spring semester called forester's ball and it's amazing.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Campus Safety
