APPLY EARLY!!! make sure you want to be an Army officer above all else in considering USMA.

    Will learn a lot

One of the premier institutions in the entire country with an unparalleled education in all aspects of life. Moral, ethical, physical, mental, leadership developing lifestyle four four years to create some of the best individuals in the U.S.

    Will enjoy being here

It depends on who you are and what you plan to take from the college. If you enjoy partying and running around with friends, WP might not be the fit for you. But people who wish to truly better themselves in the astounding environment found at the Academy will both enjoy their time and walk away as more developed and better people.

    Bang for the buck

Unlike how some perceive it, WP is not free. Sure, monetarily cadets won't have to pay a dime out of pocket for the education they receive. But a graduating cadet commits to at least five years active duty in the US Army and four years of intense training while at USMA.

    Tips for prospective students

DON'T PROCRASTINATE!!! I can't stress that enough. If you are serious about a service academy then you should get things in as early as possible. This means starting before the end of your Junior year. By the time you start Senior year, you should either already be done or almost finished with your application.

Great for these types of students

Motivated, athletic, intelligent leaders that work hard and aren't afraid of getting their hands in the mud or attempting things they have never done before.

    In three sentences

The United States Military Academy at West Point is a great place to be if you like to have a structured and regimented way of life. You will be kept busy and will value the very little truly free time you get, but the friends you make here will last a lifetime and the opportunities available to you (free semester study abroad, etc.) are not to be found anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Start early! The application for the United States Military Academy is unique in that there are some requirements such as a congressional nomination which must be done during your Junior year. Therefore, starting early greatly increases your chances of admission, especially since West Point has a rolling admissions policy for the most qualified applicants.

    Academic Rigor

Some people find the academics harder than another and your course-load does depend on your major, but no matter what classes you take, you will be challenged in one way or another., I can guarantee you that many nights will be spent without sleep writing papers or finishing projects, not because you waited until the last minute, but because it's just that difficult or long that you can't complete it at any other time.

    Dorm Life

The barracks are very old, but they are livable. Males and females live in the same barracks (though they cannot share the same room), and there are strict rules about how males must behave when in a female room (doors must be open, cannot be on the same horizontal surface other than the floor, etc. ) and SERIOUS consequences will result from breaking these rules. A lot of the rooms have maintenance issues, but they are usually fixed in a somewhat timely manner as long as you put a work order in ASAP and it is done correctly and reported to your chain of command.

    Food and Dining

The food is served on a rotating schedule, and you quickly learn what the good meals and bad meals are. I personally found the food to be suited only to certain tastes (foods such a gyro, pesto pasta, and Ruben sandwiches didn't appeal to me). There are some worshiped meals that all cadets love such as chicken crispitos, lasagna, and chicken pot pie and I did find those to be pretty good. Meals are mandatory as well and you are seated at a ten person table which changes periodically. Overall, the food isn't bad, but it just didn't personally fit my palette. There is a little restaurant called Grant Hall which is basically like an overpriced McDonald's, but the food is pretty good there though.

    What to do for fun

For fun, you can explore the area (there's a bowling alley, lots of club activities going on at any given time, take a walk by the river, or just hang out with some buddies in their room or at Grant Hall). Outside of cadet clubs and friends, there isn't much to do. You aren't allowed to leave post unless it';s the weekend and even then, the nearest town (technically, the Village of Highland Falls) is pretty dull. The only way to really have fun is to eventually get a car or pay for transportation to New York City every weekend.

    Bang for the buck

Since you don't actually pay for anything, this school is a huge bang for the buck! Just remember that you are giving up a lot of freedom to get this free education and that you have a 8 year minimum ob ligation to the United States Army upon graduation. Nonetheless, the things you get at no cost to you are amazing and I'd say totally worth the mandatory military time as an officer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every day in the morning and around noon, there are formations during which everyone must stand in a prescribed formation and take accountability. Also, on some Saturday mornings, there is an inspection known as SAMI where higher ranking cadets will go through your room and will inspect it for cleanliness. Failing this inspection will result in you losing your ability to leave West Point for recreational purposes until you pass one of the makeup SAMI's. The same thing also occurs for your issued equipment, known as a TA-50 inspection.

Great for these types of students

If you value structure and wouldn't mind giving up the normal college experience (i.e. partying, going out every night, etc.), then this is the place for you. If you are serious about a military career, then there is no better place for you than the United States Military at West Point.

    Clubs and Activities

Absolutely second to none! There are so many clubs here and, just by creating a club through the official channels, your club is given a minimum of $1500 a year to purchase equipment or simply to go one trips. No other place can say that! There are clubs here to fit anyone's tastes and, if you happen to have a hobby that isn't clubbed yet, then find some other people who share that hobby and create one!

    Greek Life

There is no Greek Life on campus.

    Campus Safety

Military police provide security on post, but there are still some crazy events that happen on campus every once in a while. The most common examples are sexual harassment allegation in the barracks, but there are many policies in place to minimize these cases. Overall, you feel pretty safe but not perfectly safe here.

    Will learn a lot

Make sure that if you are a 2012 high school grad that you seriously begin now. It might possibly be too late. For 2013 high school grads, begin looking now to apply for the summer seminar to really get a feel on a weeklong experience of West Point life.

    Will enjoy being here

If a US Army officer is what you aspire to be then this school is perfect. They will make you an ideal officer in the active duty Army.

    Bang for the buck

It's absolutely free and you actually recieve pay so it's almost like you are already working for the Army. It was ranked #1 by Forbes Magazine.

    Tips for prospective students

Get all applications done early as well as scheduling doctors appointments and getting nominational packets together long before the deadline because you don't want to have to have your fingers crossed whether applications will reach the Congressman and other nominational sources in time.

Great for these types of students

Aspiring military officers who ultimately desire a career-long service in the US Army.
