Avery Point is a close knit school. The small classes are wonderful, but the lack of majors is disappointing. Perfect for marine science and maritime studies majors.

    Tips for prospective students

Avery Point is in no way second rate to the Storrs campus.

    Academic Rigor

Many students attend for the equivalent of two years, completing general education requirements

    Dorm Life

No dorms available, only off-campus housing.

    Food and Dining

To get food on campus there's Fin's cafe and the co-op.

    What to do for fun

Student center, gym, and the whole city of Groton is at your disposal.

    Bang for the buck

    Cheap school with wonderful atmosphere.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

If you want funny, interesting conversations, go to the academic center.

Great for these types of students

Those interested in Marine science, or Maritime studies.

    Clubs and Activities

Not many available, but still very possible to be involved on campus. We have the Husky Ambassadors, EcoHuskies, ASG, and Alliance.

    Greek Life

    None that I know of

    Campus Safety

Small campus with its own police force.

Very small selection of classes unless you are attending for marine/maritime studies or nursing. Smart to attend for two years and commute to save money. Very select few of enjoyable professors.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are small and therefore there is a lot of one-on-one availability for students with their professors.

    Dorm Life

No dorms, only a couple apartment buildings are affiliated with UCONN. Financially, it is wiser to commute from home.

    Food and Dining

Very small menu at Finn's Cafe. Available meal plans, but not worth the money with Subway and Dunkin Donuts so close-by.

    What to do for fun

There are at least two activities for students every week. The student government brings in comedians and musicians often, though they are not popular ones, it is still interesting. Student bowling nights and other random activities weekly.

    Bang for the buck

You can find the same quality classes at Three Rivers, but smarter to start here for two years to get general ed. credits

Great for these types of students

Students not sure what they want to major in, maritime studies students, marine biology students, nursing students

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs considering campus size for those who are interested in being green, in gay/lesbian rights, etc.

    Campus Safety

Small police station on campus, real cops not just campus cops, will assist you to your car after night classes if you want, are always patrolling the campus

    Am learning a lot

Most of the professors here have very good teaching skills. Prof. Crofts is a sociology and women studies professor. I have taken both courses and learned a lot because the way she presents the material is very interesting and far from boring. Prof. Strawser teaches Philosophy which I thought was a boring subject until I took his class. He explains everything so clearly that the only way any one could fail his class is if they never showed up. Prof. Parent is very thorough with the material she presents. I took her anthropology class, and even though it's a lot of reading, I learned a lot. The other cool thing about being on the Avery Point campus is that you can learn a lot about the ocean. I took a Marine Biology course with Prof. Ebbin, and because the school is literally surrounded by the ocean, we got to collect samples from the water and we also got to collect plankton. In addition, there is a program called Project Oceanology, that is available for student access. This program is used to teach students about the ocean. They take you out on a boat and take samples of the ocean water, sediments, and marine organisms as well. Any one who attends UConn Avery Point will learn a lot, guaranteed.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy going to school here because there is a small number of students that attend. Because the population is small my teachers know my name and it's easier for me to get help if I need it. Everyone on campus is very respectful and the teachers are top of the line. Each teacher has their own unique personality. I have only had one teacher who was flat out rude. Other than that, I have enjoyed the many different personalities. For me, Avery Point is great because I didn't have to leave home, it was a smooth transition from high school, and my boyfriend is two years behind me, so by the time I transfer to the main campus he will graduate high school.

    Bang for the buck

It is very inexpensive to go to school here. The price is very low but the education you receive is high. You definitely get your money's worth. If you receive financial aid, the university is pretty generous with the package you receive.

    Tips for prospective students

When it comes to the FASFA, get it done as soon as you can. My first year I didn't have to pay a dime for college. My second year I got my FASFA in late and had to pay a portion of tuition and I had to pay for books. So to avoid coming out of pocket, submit your FASFA on time. Also, DO NOT buy books from the book store. They are very expensive and can be cheaper if you rent them instead. Chegg.com is a very good site where you can rent books for a very reasonable price. Trust me you save a lot of money from renting. UConn offers buy back, but at the same time I have got stuck with many books due to a new edition published, or a course not being taught the next semester. It's really better just to rent, it will save you a head ache. Another piece of advice is that you need to study. In high school I never studied. College is a lot different. It's a lot more information and a lot more difficult. As long as you get your FASFA in on time, rent your text books, and study you should be fine.

Great for these types of students

Avery Point campus is great for anyone who is not ready to live on their own, doesn't like large universities, and for people who don't want to take out thousands of dollars worth the student loans.
