The teachers are great. All professors are required to have a few office hours open for students to ask for help. If you don't have to see you professor, you can always ask your T.A. They have to have office hours too. I find the T.A. helpful because they are students too and usually give you ideas on how to student certain materials. Also, UIC has a lot of private learning resources and sessions on how to study better.

    Am enjoying being here

I dorm and find the dorm life all too exciting. It's a blast. You never have a dull moment. The only problem is if you don't like your roommate which could cause some trouble. But, you can always request a room transfer or dorm in a single. As for activities, there are too many. UIC has frats, sororities, clubs for majors, special interest, etc. FNL, Friday Night Live, is also a nice event that gives you something to do Friday night. It's like a mini-carnival.

    Bang for the buck

It's a really good university for medical degrees. I know there's other majors that it's really good too but I'm a pre-med and I just stick to my area. You really have to go out and look for what you need. What I mean is you have to join clubs and activities to get the most out of your money. I know now a days college is expensive and this place has a pretty good price compared to other universities near the area. In the end, it's up to you on how much you milk out your college experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Try everything that this college has to offer. It's only as fun and exciting as much as you want it to be.

The teachers are very knowledgeable. A lot of them encourage everyone to take advantage of their office hours, and they are always there when they say they will be. It is always important to check out your professors on ratemyprofessors.com as some teachers are definitely a lot better than others. Each teacher has his own teaching style and expectations, so make sure you are clear on what exactly those are and you will be fine.

    Am enjoying being here

There are a lot of great campus activities, and being in the city is sure a plus. There are frequent crime alerts, but if you carefully plan your trips and stay in good areas you will be fine. The cheaper dorms are sub par. There was always something broken in the bathrooms on my floor which caused frequent flooding, but the work staff was usually pretty good about getting it done. The campus scenery isn't something to brag about; most of the buildings are tan with black windows.

    Bang for the buck

The education is great, especially if you are in the medical professional field. The dorms are way overpriced. Apartments in the area may seem expensive, but in the end it is about the same price to live in a dorm for 8 months as it is to live in an apartment for 12. Money will be best spent living in JST, MRH, or TBH. The commons halls need lots of work.

    Tips for prospective students

Consider living in some sort of apartment rather than in the commons buildings. The dorm hall JST is more expensive, but a lot nicer.

Great for these types of students

Professional medical students will get the most out of UIC.

UIC is a great learning environment if you are able to use the resources offered to you. It's not always easy, and the classes are tough, but it's a great learning experience.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being in the city, and so close to the excitement of downtown. There are so many things to do from eating at exotic restuarants, going to the movies, or seeing musicals and plays.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition here is more than reasonable and so much cheaper than competing schools, and we have to same resources.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to learn time management. It can be hectic taking a full load of science courses, especially if you are a pre-professional school applicant. Make sure to ask for help BEFORE it's too late. Many TA's and Professors are willing to help students who know how to ask for it nicely and in a timely manner

Great for these types of students

Awesome for anyone wanting to go to grad school in dentistry, pharmacy, medicine, physicla therapy, or any medical field really. The science department are strong and well known. It would be great preparation for grad school to study here and do research and activities that are offered.

The learning atmosphere is great! The professors, TA's, and tutors all want to help you, and they let you know it! Most respond to emails promptly, and the professors are always accommodating when it comes to office hours.

    Am enjoying being here

There is plenty to do, and tons of opportunities to join clubs and fraternities. The student body is very diverse, and no one is looked down upon for being 'different'. Great experience overall. You can have fun and learn tons at the same time! And, you will make lasting friends who are very supportive of you.

    Bang for the buck

You definitely get your money's worth out of this school. As mentioned before, all professors are there to help you. They won't shirk their duties by letting class out early because they didn't plan enough material, but go into deeper detail so you better understand the material.

    Tips for prospective students

Enjoy yourself! Plus, make friends with students who know how to study! Study for your classes all the time so you don't end up cramming at the last minute...it never works! Also, give yourself set times to quit the books and relax!

Great for these types of students

Any one who wants to learn, and is willing to put forth the effort to succeed!

    Will learn a lot

Yes because it is taught by mostly professors. I got a chance to see a classroom and I liked it because they are not big class sizes and you actually get to see who is your teacher compared to other big schools.

    Will enjoy being here

Yes you will because it is in Chicago. It has a lot of places to go and activities to do.

    Bang for the buck

It is not that expensive comparing to other schools because you will have fun and enjoy being there. There are a lot of activities and it is worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

apply early, start looking for scholarships, and get a good ACT score

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who want to go into Nursing and Pharmacy . Also, everything in the Medical field is very good.

The teachers explain the materials pretty well and are very easy to get in contact with if you do have any questions. Just actually attend class, take notes, and pay attention and you will be fine. There is usually a T.A. but I found that they really help and allow you to have a better understanding of the topics. It is also nice because your going to be in a smaller group with your T.A. than with your Professor.

    Am enjoying being here

Definitely not your typical college. I dorm in Courtyard and it is a bit run down there. It is very nice with the cluster style living but the quality is better in other dorms. There is always quite a bit going on though. The activity fair at the beginning of the fall semester really shows you all of the clubs and organizations that are around campus. A lot of your typical college activities are more hush hush than on other campuses. Also, since it is in the city safety is definitely a huge point. I've received many crime reports via email. However, you just have to be aware of your surroundings and use your common sense to be fine.

    Bang for the buck

Education is really good and worth the money it costs. A bit pricey depending on your major and where you are rooming though.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't skip class. Do your homework on time. Don't procrastinate. Get involved in clubs and organizations.

Great for these types of students

Focused on their education. Great for anyone looking for a medical career.

I've had some great professors my first semester here. The TA's are always there if you need help and also the professors. If you ever needed help or questions about the class you can always see your professor or TA. The professors and TA's have office hours when you can go see them if you needed help with anything. I learned alot from my professors and TA's. We have alot of resource centers to help you for further assistance.

    Am enjoying being here

I don't dorm, I commute and I love being here at this school, it was a very good choice and I'm glad I chose this school. The commute is enjoyable, I do not live too far, I enjoy exploring Chicago and the campus when I don't have classes. There are so many great people here that you will meet and I especially love the diversity. There are alot of activites you can get involved with here, sororities, fraternities a dance team cheerleading and plenty more. College is all about what you make it to be join clubs a frat or sorority to get to know more people other than being in classes.

    Bang for the buck

UIC is known as a research school and it's a very good school for anyone interested in a medical field. College now a days are very expensive and the tuition is pretty good compared to other schools. You definately will not be wasting money on your education here at UIC it's a great school. Definately take advantage of all the activiteis and clubs to join so that you can get your money's worth other than just education.

    Tips for prospective students

Get out of those bad study habits such as waiting to the last minute to write a paper because it's alot of work and reading. Get involved with different activites or clubs and I would consider living in the dorms, I personally don't live there but have friends that do and it's a good experience.

Great for these types of students

Everyone, especially those considering a career in the medical field.

UIC doesn't only provide a world class education, but a world class experience. I come from a community where there's practically only one race. When I entered UIC, I realized that the campus provided an opportunity for me to interact with a wide array of people. I've met people who are complete different from me, yet we manage to have a few things in common which helps me build life long bonds.

    Am enjoying being here

Along with the diversity, the professors are also point in favor of UIC. So far, my professors have all been very enthusiastic about their students' goals. They, along with the Teacher's Assistants, are there to help you in any way they can. They are always available outside of class for any additional assistance that is needed for our excellence. I gave it 4 stars because initially it is quite difficult to form a close knit of friends. The campus is big, therefore people you may know may be on the opposite side of campus which may leave you feeling like you're the only one out there. However, once you get the hang of it and get with the program, you'll find something to do with free time and in no time will find people in classrooms and in hangout areas.

    Bang for the buck

Most definitely! This is by far one of the best aspects of UIC. Money plays a big factor for prospective and current college students. Along with looking at UIC's tuition and etc, I also looked into their scholarships for incoming freshmen. They have opportunities for scholarships whether need or merit base which helped out a lot my first year at UIC.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you research UIC and see if it is right for you. Once you commit to a college, it becomes your second home. Choose wisely and look into whether they're programs will meet your needs. Don't think Am I right for UIC? but instead question yourself Is UIC right for me? You are investing in your future and your college should fit your needs. UIC has definitely fit my needs and I consider it a great investment in my future. Therefore, it was my first and last choice.

Great for these types of students

If you're willing to try something new and exciting and experience the city life- UIC can fulfill that. One short bus ride can put you in the middle of the city and you'll be standing the awestruck. There is so much exploring to do in and around the UIC campus. Every day is a new learning experience -inside and outside of the classroom.

Being that this university is in the city of Chicago, Many of my professors are undergoing vast research, not only involving the city but the world. You are always up to date with what is going on, and how the education of yesterday is much different from the knowledge we are getting today. Besides, the program I am in is in the top 5 in the nation. I am getting the best hands on education i could imagine

    Am enjoying being here

The best part about being here is the free public transportation. You are in the city of chicago, a city of oppertunities. You can enjoy museums, galleries, parks, beackes, cultures, everything you can imagine. The diversity makes it alot of fun, and the friends you make will introduce you to things you never knew. For example, hardcore african food is spicy. and delicious. hah

    Bang for the buck

although the tuition is great and I love the experience, the meal plan in the dorm I live in is sub-par. Although I can eat at any of the locations, the most convenient one isn't the greatest. Also, the cost of living in the city is more expensive. My groceries cost twice as much. Learn to love your meal plan.

    Tips for prospective students

Do alot of research on the dorm/area you plan on living in and learn the bus routes. Its okay to get lost... sorta. hah You end up finding new restaraunts, short cuts, and parks. Rainboots and bustracker are your best friend.

Great for these types of students

You have to be open minded here. The school is SO diverse. ignorance will put you behind. Many of the students here are international, and/or speak multiple languages.. including professors. You need patience and spontaneity. You're going to bein the city, so might as well enjoy it for everything its worth. Also, this school isnt a party school, and the social life is difficult.. My best recommendation would be to get involved. There are so many activities and sports, and that is honestly the easiest way to meet people here.

I love attending UIC because each course is a different learning experience. I find the professors are quite helpful and explain things well. Sometimes the Teacher's Assistants are difficult to understand, but after a while you will become accustomed to their accents.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love UIC. I never really wanted to go here and it was definetly not my first choice, but I love this school. It is quite diverse and open minded along with being a great learning atmosphere to students who may need extra help. UIC offers learning centers for almost every subject, and the TA's and teachers are always willing to help students out.

    Bang for the buck

UIC may be somewhat expensive, but the quality of the education is worth it. UIC offers so many different organizations and opportunities to students that they may actually be making money by the end of their experience.

    Tips for prospective students

One should apply early at UIC. Especially if you are dorming, the application needs to be in as soon as possible so that you will be able to get the best room possible.

Great for these types of students

Every student will find something they love about UIC. It is a college of many different capabilities.

As much as UIC offers, it's hard not to learn a lot. Some of the professors may be be tough, but they are dedicated to their work, and have no problems helping you understand subjects better. They will even help you find outside resources, if you need extra help.

    Am enjoying being here

In high school, I knew UIC was where I wanted to be. Now, as a sophomore, there is no difference. I love the school, and you can always find something to do. People complain that it's boring here on campus, but it's really all about what type of person you are. You can't just expect the fun to fall in your lap. Trust me, if you find a few friends you can always find some way to enjoy yourself.

    Bang for the buck

The school does provide the students with many activities whether it for academics of just for fun. However, I think we pay just a little too much for the dorms, just because of the location.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class! Many students don't attend class because they think they know everything, it's boring, or they are too tired, but that is only going to hurt you in the end. Hey, if you're paying to be here, utilize everything UIC offers. It will be very beneficial.

Great for these types of students

UIC is great for those wanting to pursue a career in the medical and even business fields.

The classes at UIC are very challenging, but you will learn a lot. Most of the professors actually care about the students and are willing to provide any additional help they might need.I should say that all of them are very knowledgeable in their field of study,90 % have PhDs.English professors give you valuable feedback on your work, math and science professors try to give you the basic ideas about the concepts. However, there are professors that suck, but in that case try to get a good TA.Go to the discussion and ask questions, that way you will learn more.Besides there are always other resources like math and science learning centers where you can clarify something you didn't get, besides tutors(most of them are TAs) there can help you do your homework:)

    Am enjoying being here

I have never expected that college would be so much fun.Of course in the beginning it is very hard to manage your time but once you get used to the college life,it is much easier.Besides the interesting classes there are always events you can attend during the day.Night life is also pretty vibrant since the school is in Chicago, where there are many clubs and dances.People are friendly for the most part, the college is very diverse. There are also lots of opportunities like internships, fellowship, study abroad, volunteering and different scholarships.I really enjoy studying at UIC.

    Bang for the buck

Since UIC is a state school, the tuition isn't very expensive.I got a full ride with decent grades and some financial need.Besides there are lots of scholarships for the continuing students as well.I would recommend joining the Honors College, they have their own scholarships and volunteering opportunities. Moreover, the school is huge so there are always on-campus jobs available.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all the resources the UIC has to offer.Go to your lectures and discussions since it is much easier to get the material in class then to try understanding the books.(Most books I used were extremely confusing).Go to ratemyprofessors, com and check your professors, that is how I got my amazing math prof). Also don't buy the books at the bookstore they are twice as expensive there rather, go to amazon.com.Also join the study groups or just study with a friend,it helps a lot.

Great for these types of students

UIC is a big state school, many of the math and science lectures would have about 300 people.Go to professors' office hours, let them know who you are.UIC is for independent students who love to learn. It is also for those who enjoy the city life and like to have fun.Overall,UIC is a good school with lots of opportunities, you just have to take advantage of them.

UIC is great for highly independent and self-motivated students with a real drive for research and academic rigor. Students who require a lot of personalized assistance or like a tight-knit community may want to look at another school, because UIC lacks a cohesive sense of 'school spirit' and it can be difficult to make friends. However, if you're really only here to learn and want to do so at an urban university close to exciting cultural and social opportunities, this may be the school for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Find a professor or academic adviser that fits for you and KEEP IN TOUCH! It can be VERY easy to 'slip between the cracks' or become dispirited here because it's difficult to find a place to fit in. Get yourself involved in something: whether it's the honors college, a club, or Greek Life. You need to feel a connection and feel like you belong in order to get a good experience out of UIC.

    Academic Rigor

It's important to remember that UIC is a research university, NOT a teaching university. Some students don't realize this and expect the university to be deeply attuned to their needs, and then are highly disappointed when they find out that faculty is more interested in pursuing their own research interests. Sometimes professors (especially in the sciences) may not even be equipped to teach entry-level or freshman classes because they make it TOO difficult. Expect to do a lot of independent research. Also, sometimes the teaching assistants are terrible and difficult to work with, but almost all the departments have walk-in advising hours where you can get help from other TAs who might be more helpful. There's also tutoring available either at the Honors College or at the Academic Writing Center.

    Dorm Life

Most students are commuters, and for good reason. The dorms really aren't that great and they're pretty expensive. You're better off getting an apartment close by or commuting if you're capable. The fire alarms in the dorms go off very early in the morning at least once a week and the walls are paper-thin: if you're going to live in the dorms, invest in a GREAT set of earplugs and maybe a white noise machine.

    Food and Dining

Dining is awesome around UIC. There are tons of different restaurants available and the cafeteria provides vegetarian and vegan options too. Since UIC is close to both Little Italy and Greektown, you're assured of finding something tasty that suits your palate. There are also three grocery stores within walking distance and other specialty stores, such as Whole Foods, are close by. You will definitely be able to find something you like and a lot of places are open 24 hours.

    What to do for fun

UIC is right on three major bus routes and has its own Blue Line stop, so the whole of Chicago is available to you. You're also only about two miles away from the beautiful lake shore, right by Museum Campus, and only a two-mile walk from Olgilvie and Union Stations if you want to head out of the city for a weekend or an afternoon. There's also Greektown right there, with the new Pan-Hellenic Museum that just opened if you have any interest in Greek history. Over by the Medical District (West Campus), you are close to the United Center for Bulls and Blackhawk games, next to another Blue Line stop, and near the quaint but quiet Tri-Taylor district. Anything you can think of it is right there, available for you!

    Bang for the buck

UIC is fairly inexpensive, but there are plenty of grants and scholarships available and a lot of room for exploration and professional development. The nice thing about UIC is that because it's such a large school, it's very easy to change majors or minors, so if you're not quite sure what you want to do, it's easy to go in undecided and declare a major a year or two in. Because of this, it's great for anyone who knows they want a college education but isn't quite sure in what, and this gives a distinct advantage over other more specific/smaller schools like Columbia and Loyola, because you won't feel as if you've wasted the first two years of college being undecided.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Daley library on East campus is home to a lot of interesting special collections, including all the logs of the Chicago Shetland and Orkney Society, which was active for a little under 100 years and catered to Scottish immigrants in Chicago. UIC also houses the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum which even today remains a hub for social justice activism and immigrant's rights.

Great for these types of students

UIC is best for self-directed and motivated students with a passion for research and independent research. Someone who needs a lot of guidance or individual attention will not do well here. There are plenty of professional development resources available as well as internships, jobs, and opportunities to connect with people in your future field. If you're passionate about something and you're willing to reach out to people instead of being simply handed opportunities, UIC will be an excellent choice for you. It really does separate the cream from the crop.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs available, but they aren't well advertised or managed. Clubs have a tendency to simply fall apart after the cohort that arranged them graduates and there isn't a strong tradition of ... well, anything. However, if you have particular hobbies, like anthropology, anime, or public speaking, you'll likely be able to find something fun to occupy your time.

    Greek Life

There is a Greek community, but they tend to be rather insulated and don't have a large presence on campus.

    Campus Safety

UIC is very transparent about the issues they face in regards to safety. There are plenty of emergency boxes around campus and they hold seminars about sexual assault and crime prevention every month. The problem is that since UIC is such a large and spread-out campus (and essentially bisected into two campuses), plus in a huge urban area, it's difficult to keep everyone safe. However, the crime rate isn't drastically larger than you would expect in a city college, so there's no reason to be afraid of coming here or of visiting. Most people who get into trouble here were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time or weren't paying attention to their surroundings. Generally the crimes that occur are robberies or break-ins.

The program I am in, is very focused and dedicated to making the field better, but perhaps it is too focused. It tries to do too much, and should focus more on the students and how to teach them, rather than what they will never encounter in the work force

    Tips for prospective students

Really consider what you want to do before choosing a school. Speaking strictly about grad school, it's not for everyone, and its certainly not like any other type of schooling I have ever taken.

    Academic Rigor

Again, speaking strictly about grad school, the work load is so much more than I have ever encountered. Architecture normally requires more work than most other majors, but any major will be tough. Be prepared to have too many nights with not enough sleep

    Food and Dining

plenty of places around campus to eat. I prefer to cook most of my own food, but if you are craving just about anything, there is a good chance it is within walking distance, or a short public transportation trip

    What to do for fun

Personally, I love doing anything that involves moving. There are plenty of places to play a pickup game of basketball, frsbee, etc. The fitness center is excellent as well. There are also an abundance of restaurants, bars, etc located in the city, which always provide something to do

    Am learning a lot

I live on campus at UIC, and I love the way that living in the city enriches my education. For example, my english class was centered around the topic of immigration, meanwhile I am living in a city with tons of immigrants, and have some immigrants in my classes as well. Also, some of the classes I took last semester touched on similar information, which made everything more interesting. I feel that at UIC I am taking classes that, for the most part, are at the appropriate level for me, and my professors have been very knowledgable and approachable.

    Am enjoying being here

I like being at UIC mostly because of the people I am meeting. Everyone is very different, even though most of them are coming from the Chicagoland area. Additionally, it is fun to be located in the city, as well as having many opportunities because of it. Lastly, I am enjoying the classes I am taking, and appreciate the wide range of courses available.

    Bang for the buck

Although I am happy to be at UIC, I think the cost of housing is too high. I live in the older dorms, and the building seems to require constant maintenance in the form of fixing pipes, bleaching the floor, etc. in order to function. It smells bad every day, and I know several people who have gotten sick from mold in the walls and have been highly inconvenienced. Given all of this, I do not think I should be paying over $10,000 for my room. Nevertheless, the tuition is low compared to many schools, so for the commuters, which make up most of the students, they are getting a good bang for their buck!

    Tips for prospective students

UIC is a great school. They're isn't a huge party scene, and they're is no football team, which can be a big negative for some people, but I got over that and saw what the school has to offer. At UIC you meet so many different people, and have access to so many resources do to the location of the school and the centers on campus. They is also a wide range of fields of study, so if you change your mind about your major it isn't a big deal. I am having a great time at this school and would recommend it.

Great for these types of students

UIC is great for students who aren't into the huge parties and athletics scene. There are some parties at UIC, but they are usually low key. Also, great for students interested in the sciences. UIC has a great medical program, as well as a good engineering school.

University of Illinois has a unique way of pushing its students to reach their full potential and learn a great amount of new information, but doing it in fun and different ways so learning doesn't feel like a long, exhausting task. The interesting thing about Illinois is that it's extremely reputable for its academics, but this doesn't compromise its wealth of social interaction between the students. The students of Illinois work together in study groups, organize meetings with each other and utilize a variety of study resources available on campus. With all these outlets learning becomes not a chore, but a fun way in which students can push each other and themselves to learn things they never thought they would.

    Am enjoying being here

I definitely am enjoying being here. This is a place fit for any type of prospective high school student. Even though it's a larger university, there is a place here for everyone. Myself, I came from a small, midwestern town that most people have not heard of. I was one of three students graduating from my class that went to U of I, so I didn't have very many people I could lean on once I moved on campus. U of I has done a great job organizing hundred of clubs and organizations so that every student can find their niche and feel a sense of belonging. Personally, I can be very shy and introverted initially so in the past it was sometimes difficult for me to meet new people. U of I's web of different groups and club made me feel at home almost right away because I was able to meet other students who had the same interests I did. I'm a senior year now approaching graduation and I can't believe how fast these four years have gone by!

    Bang for the buck

If I could go back and do it all over again, I 110% would! Compared to other community colleges and smaller universities, U of I is a bit more expensive- but it's worth every penny. This is the university in which you get the perfect balance between academics and social life. Although it is known to be a very academically prestigious school, the social activity on campus is not compromised by this- as we see in many other schools known for their academic integrity. I would recommend this school to all types of students, because there truly is a place on campus for everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't give up if you're initially feeling homesick or intimidated by the big campus or large amounts of students. The place may feel foreign at first, but it will soon become your new home I can assure you of that! I felt very homesick and regretful of my decision for U of I at the beginning of my freshman year; I even contemplated moving back home and going to a smaller school. But I pushed through it and soon enough I could not have been happier with my decision to stay. Going from high school to college is great adjustment: you go from knowing everyone you pass in the halls, being a senior and on top of the social totem pole, knowing the town and the area you live in, to being dropped in the middle of this foreign campus with no familiar faces. Of course it will take a little bit of time to become comfortable, but it will happen. Your first year of college is a perfect time to practice your social skills and push yourself out of your comfort zone by meeting new people and building friendships. A lot of the friendships you create in these short four years will last throughout your entire life, so its very important you make the effort!

Great for these types of students

As I stated before, this university is truly a place for any type of student. As I walk to class I see students from all different types of religious and ethnical backgrounds, different nationalities, sports athletes, students in the visual and performing arts, students in the greek system, and numerous others representing the wide variety of clubs and organizations on campus. U of I has been very successful in representing all types of young adults so that any type of student can make the university their home away from home.
