Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The faculty at the University of Iowa is very qualified and interacts well with their students to provide them with a great educational experience. In a school the size of Iowa, both discussion sections and lectures are the predominant forms of learning. With discussion sections being smaller, the more intimate setting makes for lively conversation and more individual attention. Lectures, on the other hand, are very large, with sometimes over 500 students in attendance. However, I have found it comforting to know that despite the class size, the professors are readily available via office hours, email, or directly after class. Professors challenge their students and have high expectations to help them be the best.
Am enjoying being here Living in Illinois, I had many in-state school choices, but after visiting the Iowa campus, I felt that I belonged here. Not only did I feel completely welcomed and accepted by fellow classmates and upperclassmen, but the faculty as well. As a result of this, I have met so many wonderful people and have formed solid friendships. Iowa is a truly beautiful school and campus that provides their students with opportunities that I believe are the best in preparing you for your future. Students are not only encouraged to become involved with various academic groups or extracurricular activities, but Iowa does an excellent job of planning school sponsored events for students to engage with other students, helping you to feel like a Hawkeye from the beginning. True school spirit is clearly demonstrated and practiced at not only sporting events, but other functions such as Dance Marathon and Homecoming. There’s nothing better than attending a Big Ten football game on a Saturday morning at Kinnick Stadium – even if you’re not a sports fan. It’s true when they say It's great to be a Hawkeye.
Bang for the buck Being an out-of- state student, at first view the tuition seemed high. In comparison to other Big Ten schools, I found that for such a quality education, Iowa is ranked as one of the best deals. Iowa is a beautiful campus that is very well maintained, and Iowa City offers numerous entertainment opportunities involving local restaurants, theater and music performances, shopping, and hotels, all within walking distance from the campus. For students living on campus, the dorm facilities are exceptional. Not only did I find that the rooms are the most spacious out of the many schools I visited, but also that the bathrooms are very up to date and kept in great condition. The dorm halls and facilities are also very well cared for by both students and maintenance personnel. Dining centers at the University of Iowa are fantastic. So many different meal choices are offered on a regular basis, the dining facilities are kept very clean, and the employees are very friendly. Classroom buildings at the University of Iowa are equipped with the latest technological materials, providing students with an enhanced learning experience. Iowa is also great for students interested in the medical field, as “University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics [is] recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States.”
Tips for prospective students As a student coming into the University of Iowa, one important piece of advice I would follow is to get involved in a school activity or group whether it's something as big as Dance Marathon or a smaller club. Joining any group is a great opportunity to meet other students and become more involved.
Great for these types of students The University of Iowa is a great fit for anyone whether you're more gregarious or more shy and reserved. With all that Iowa has to offer, it makes it simple for students of all backgrounds and personalities to find something that appeals to them.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The faculty at the University of Iowa are extremely intent on their students learning excellent material that they will later apply to their future career. Despite the university being a large school in the Big Ten, the professors and teacher assistants are extremely driven to making sure you know what is going on in the class. Many professors hold office hours multiple times per week, which is great considering the fact that it may be difficult to ask questions in lectures that more than 400 students attend. Students are also able to contact their teachers via email, which I especially appreciate because the faculty responds extremely quickly. Overall, the education that I have received in my first year of college has been amazing and I cannot believe how much I have already learned.
Am enjoying being here I love the University of Iowa and I would never take back my decision to attend school here. From football games to Kinnick stadium to theater performances at Hancher auditorium, there is always something for students to do in their free time. The university sponsors many events every week that students may attend free of charge, which is wonderful because everyone knows that college students are not swimming in cash. For example, during Homecoming 2008, the University of Iowa brought in the band Rooney and Chuck Berry to play after the pep rally. Being able to see the old and the new of music for free before a major football game was an amazing experience, and I expect the University of Iowa to continue exciting events such as this in the future.
Bang for the buck The in-state tuition is one of the lowest in the state and many students migrate from the Chicagoland area to receive Iowa's out-of-state tuition. That says a lot, considering there are many great schools in Illinois. The quality of the education students receive at the University of Iowa is amazing, especially for students interested in health care fields. Access to a major research hospital (the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics) provides an excellent incentive to attend this school.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend future students to participate in extracurricular activities provided by the University of Iowa. They are a great way to get away from the books and allow you to take a break from all of the studying that is required at college.
Great for these types of students The University of Iowa is a great fit for anyone, in my opinion. Outgoing, extroverted students will appreciate the large size of the school while more introverted students would love the attentiveness of the faculty. Jocks will love the fact that Iowa is a Big Ten university and theater buffs will adore the productions put on by the University of Iowa and the opportunity to participate in these productions.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is so much to learn here! Between all of the possible courses to choose from and learning all the aspects of the campus and city you will never get bored. I have already learned so much and cannot wait to learn more! Iowa has some great top-rated programs and is a great place to be when looking for a strong education. Also, all the different opportunities other than schooling that are provided here can teach you so much about other things and about yourself. College is one huge learning experience and I am so glad that I am getting that experience here at Iowa.
Am enjoying being here Moving to Iowa City was a much easier transition than I thought it would be. There is so much to get involved in on campus and so many people to meet, you can't help but to love being in this wonderful college town. I love that there is always something going on if I'm bored, or if I need to buckle down and study I can pick from numerous locations to sit at and bury my head in textbooks for hours. My experience here in my first three months of college has been absolutely great so far and I cannot wait for the next three years!
Bang for the buck This university is a great deal for those from the state of Iowa. It is expensive for out-of-state students, but compared to other out-of-state schools Iowa is definitely one of the lower-priced. The education and experiences you will receive here are absolutely worth the money.
Tips for prospective students Pick the school that you feel is right for you and that you have fallen in love with. It may seem like an impossible decision, but in the end you will know where you belong! Don't stress out too much and just enjoy your search for the perfect college for you.
Great for these types of students The University of Iowa has some nationally top-ranked programs, so if those are something you are interested in I would definitely take a closer look at Iowa. This school is so diverse and anyone would fit in here as long as you are willing to be a Hawkeye for life!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Iowa City is a fabulous learning environment. In my first semester, all of my professors were very knowledgeable in each of their respective fields. I feel that at Iowa classes and degree requirements are designed to enable students to actually learn class material instead of just cram for the grade.
Am enjoying being here I don't have enough good things to say about Iowa City. The university's campus is nestled right next to downtown which makes it very easy to go out and eat every once and a while. Iowa's parties and tailgating are awesome, better than any of my friend's school choices. If big parties aren't your thing, there's plenty of other things to do day in and day out. The only reason you can be bored in Iowa City is if you want to be bored.
Bang for the buck I'm a student that doesn't have a lot of money, Iowa's financial aid department really helped me out. While the out of state tuition might scare away some people, all the experiences and the Big-10 education is totally worth it. Iowa's a school that gives out a lot of money for those students who look for it. Use the university's website to look for scholarships to apply for.
Tips for prospective students Get your football season tickets and housing application in early. If you're a business student then definitely live on the East side of the river. Don't be afraid to try new things and meet new people.
Great for these types of students The University of Iowa is a great place for students who like to party. Be warned, most students take academics very seriously. Just remember: study hard, then party hard.

Great for these types of students I feel this school is great for students interested in anything in the medical or health care professions. Also good for students looking towards a career in the business world.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am an English major, but The University of Iowa is flexible enough that I have enrolled in classes in theatre, letterpress, photography, philosophy, and more. I am always learning at the University, and a key theme developed in each of my classes is web-like thinking. I can connect an idea across classes, expanded my knowledge even further. I deducted a star because I would like to learn more of the mechanics of the English language, not just literary history and theory.
Am enjoying being here Iowa City is a great place for college students, and this is definitely due to the University. We have many local restaurants, coffee shops, and vintage clothing stores. Iowa City has a strong community, and this is reflected on campus.
Bang for the buck I am an Iowa resident, so I feel like I am earning my education at a great value, but I cannot speak for the out-of-state students.
Tips for prospective students Research your major, as well as many others.
Be flexible and willing to try new things.
Find some extracurricular activities or hobbies that will connect you to other students.
Always practice your writing, even if you are not planning to be an English major. You will always need quality communication skills.Great for these types of students Writers

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The required General Education program has helped to broaden my horizons. For example, I was able to take a Judaism, Christianity, and Islam class which a regular business curriculum would never require. This general education course pushed me to explore my interests and I ended up declaring a minor in Religious Studies after this course. Although Big Ten schools are typically addressed regarding sports, these public universities have high academic standards and provide a fun and interesting learning environment.
Am enjoying being here I found that I got to college and was able to fit in perfectly. Iowa City places a large emphasis on cultural activities; for example, I attended a weeklong reading of Anna Karenina one week and then saw an improv group in the next. Although there are people who will spend every weekend at the bars (which, in their own right, are entertaining), I found an equal amount of people who were excited to engage in intellectual debates. The town is a little smaller than what I'm used to, but everything is at your disposal and by the end of your first year, the Big Ten size of the University disappears as you start to recognize numerous people.
Bang for the buck The University of Iowa is a little expensive for out of state attendees. However, they are better than most public universities at providing financial aid.
Tips for prospective students In order to avoid getting lost in the sheer number of students, there is a program pushed by the university called Pick One! This program encourages you to join a club within weeks of starting at the University so that a community base is established. It helped me significantly in finding people with similar interests.
Great for these types of students We are the number one school for writers, so anyone interested in English would benefit from attending. That being said, there are many hipsters or intellectuals in this town; it seems to be losing it's reputation as a party school lately. However, students would benefit if they know how to work hard and play hard; that is a major part of attending a Big Ten University.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a very large campus so it is definitely in your best interest to get involved in an extra-curricular activity, especially your first year. This allows you to start building a resume, making contacts, and most importantly helps you meet people who will end up being your friends the next four years. In such large classes on campus, it's easy to feel lost, so get involved and you'll find you know more and more people in your classes, which makes them much more enjoyable.
Tips for prospective students The dorms are enormous, but there are always activities that help you meet people and have a good time. Don't live in Burge because it always smells like food, but otherwise they are clean and always busy. Dorm life is good and can accommodate almost anything you want weather it's to exercise, to socialize, to eat, or to actually study.
Academic Rigor I lead a bike touring group, which is really fun and you should look into if you come to the U of I. There are always concerts, comedy shows, different community activities and movies playing on campus. Pay attention to fliers around town because a lot of shows are free or discounted for students and John Oliver (of the Daily Show) was one of the funniest shows I've seen this year. The friends you make will help your time be more fun, even when there isn't a campus-wide event going on. Iowa City is never boring.
Dorm Life The University of Iowa offers a lot of scholarships and work-study programs to help you pay for school. With tuition and everything included, we have some of the best professors, international studies programs, and campus organizations around. We have a beautiful campus, an awesome recreation center, student health services, and supporting staff. All things considered, I feel like U of I gives me plenty of opportunities to excel and is well worth the money spent.
What to do for fun The University of Iowa is especially excellent for students who are creative and enjoy writing and challenging their own opinions. There are a lot of opportunities for thoughtful discussion and dispute, and you can really learn a lot of information that might challenge your current belief systems. College is all about learning.
Bang for the buck I am a current member of the Women's Resource and Action Center and I write for the Daily Iowan. I have also participated in Dance Marathon which raises millions each year for Children's cancer research. There is a club for just about anything in which you could be interested, and I definitely encourage everyone to get involved.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Wide range of classes to fit anyone's abilities
Am enjoying being here Most people are very friendly, a lot of fun activities on campus, clean, nice campus
Bang for the buck In-state tuition is affordable, out-of-state tuition is less than in-state tuition at most Illinois schools
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus, see what it's all about! Visit the website to find all sorts of information on opportunities, classes, scholarships, etc.! Join Dance Marathon!
Great for these types of students Any students- whether you're a 4.0 student or 3.0 student, there will be opportunities for any level of academic proficiency. If you like to meet new people, Iowa is a great place! The students and faculty are very friendly and there are many diverse clubs and organizations for any type of student!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I feel in high school, there was always so much more I thought I should know. When going into my Freshmen year I was signed up for Calculus. I am horrible at math and was so nervous. The first day of class I was lost, I felt everyone was so much more prepared! I talked to my professor and he was so helpful! I ended up getting a pretty descent grade and learned a lot. This is just one of the many examples of how much I am learning!
Am enjoying being here Iowa is so much fun! Getting involved is so easy! The football games are personally my favorite part! You tailgate and meet so many new people! Cheering on Iowa is so much fun, its like you are a huge part of the team!
Bang for the buck I would know if it is worth it to go here! I pay out of state tuition! I am currently taking out loans, and have a tiny scholarship from high school! My parents are not helping with tuition at all! I love it though and I feel that it is worth it for the fun and what I am learning!
Tips for prospective students Iowa is so much fun, but you need to know how much you should study! Do not go by with how many hours you study. You need to go by how much you are prepared! If you are not prepared for a test it will catch up to you!
Great for these types of students If you love being involved and going to athletic events this is your kind of school!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot From what I have seen and heard about this university, I feel I will get a phenomenal education. I will be enrolled in honors, but I feel that with or without the honors classes, every student here has wonderful opportunities.
Will enjoy being here With anything, it is what you make of it. If you are convinced you will have a bad time, then you will not enjoy your experience. But, if you get active and engage yourself in activities, you will have a fabulous time. Everyone has the chance to get involved, as this school has so many activities.
Bang for the buck Being out of state, I still feel that this school is very affordable. In fact, many in-state schools cost much more to attend. Granted, I did receive scholarship money, but with or without it, I think attending the University of Iowa will be worth the cost.
Tips for prospective students Definitely visit the campus. It is beautiful and very incorporated with Iowa City, so there is plenty to do. Also, the dorm rooms are huge! The way I decided on Iowa was by making a pro and con list of each of my schools. It helps a lot to narrow down the list.
Great for these types of students Pre Medicine for sure. The hospital is right on campus, and Iowa is renowned for its medical program.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The educational opportunities at the University of Iowa are boundless, whether you pick one of their countless majors or make up one of your own working with their great academic advising committee! Come to classes with top notch professors who write their own materials and hold various degrees and already have patents and who run national studies making breakthroughs everyday! Experience unique chances to do research in the labs or learning over at the renown University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics!
Am enjoying being here The chances I have had at the Unversity of Iowa are remarkable. All within in the first year I have had the opportunity to plan events, volunteer, try tight rope walking, sit down and watch a movie with President Mason, and travel to Washington D.C. with Mock Trial to compete against schools like Harvard and Yale. The location is great and central and you are able to walk to anything you could need. It is a great community, no family to be apart of. Every time I see a Hawkeye I am proud to be a part of them.
Bang for the buck Honestly, I couldn't ask for anything else from the University of Iowa. Knowing students who are paying $60,000 a year to attend other higher ranked schools I think they are crazy for missing out on this incredible opportunity!
Tips for prospective students Take a visit to the school if you are questioning it, you will fall in love with the campus and people! Don't forget to get involved right away!
Great for these types of students This school is great for every student because you can be as noticed as you want, whether you work better with a small group of friends or running the student government there is a chance for everyone! With all of the groups and programs there is sure to be something for you!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I was always told that my classes at the University of Iowa would be too large and it would be too much for me to handle. All of my discussions are between 20 and 30 people with the exception of my lecture. For example, I have a large math lecture Tuesdays and Thursdays with a couple hundred people and on Mondays and Wednesdays everyone breaks into smaller discussion sections, and that is where teachers assistants get more in depth and answer questions.
Am enjoying being here I live in Iowa so the University of Iowa was close to home, but still far enough away. The campus at the U of I feels like a home because it is intermixed with downtown Iowa CIty instead a college campus that I was trapped in. I was worried about the time it would take me to get to class, but for me, it is a 10 minute walk tops. I've made so many friends here, especially in my hallway in Burge Hall. These girls will be in my life for a very long time. Whoever said High School is the best time of you'r life was lying.. college is!
Bang for the buck Iowa tuition is significantly less than private schools and is similar in price to the other Universities in Iowa. A great price for an amazing college education and an amazing college experience :)
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are options here for everyone! My personal favorite is Dance Marathon. Dance Marathon helps to raise money for children with cancer at the U of I hospitals. There is and event that last 24 hours where every dances (yes, for 24 hours) to help fight cancer!
Great for these types of students The Recreational Center is absolutely wonderful. I was never an athlete, but how can you not take advantage of it! A membership to the Rec is included in your tuition and if you're athletic you won't be able to resist going.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I just transferred here from a small WI university and from what I have learned here so far I finally decided on a career/major change. The professors here know what they're talking about and they're there to help you whenever you have questions. The professors and advisers are who encouraged me to make this career choice and stick it out! They're all great supporters and mentors and I have had a chance to experience many educational opportunities that I wouldn't have had the chance to at my WI university.
Am enjoying being here After transferring here as a Junior from out of state I didn't know anyone, but because of all the events on campus, campus groups and organizations, as well as the downtown/nightlife I was able to meet people and make new friends right away. The classes I have taken were all taught by very nice and intelligent professors. The hospitals and clinics provide many great volunteer and internship opportunities for students in the health/medical fields.
Bang for the buck Since I am out of state the tuition is quite high for me. I do know that in the future, the education that I get from the University of Iowa will be worth that high tuition! However, they do offer many scholarships and the financial aid office will gladly meet with you to discuss your options and help you with paying tuition. It is at a great price for in-state students.
Tips for prospective students Get involved!! It helps greatly with the college transition you will be making. There are so many different clubs and organizations to join on campus that it's almost impossible to just pick one! You will be guaranteed to meet new people, be able to do fun things and plan fun events for the entire campus! Also, go to games, sporting events, and arts performances. Hawkeye football is something no one can miss!
Great for these types of students The University of Iowa offers too many majors and programs to mention! You will most likely find what you're looking for here. It is well known for it's amazing medical school and health programs such as nursing and pharmacy. Also, engineering is huge here and students get the chance to explore the new engineering facilities. A brand new college of public health building is in construction and looks like a beautiful addition to campus as well. So students of all interests have many options and choices here at Iowa. GO HAWKS!!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Iowa has a lot of great professors and, because it's such a large school, has a lot of courses for every level of student in most areas. There are a number of classes taught by TAs, where you never even see a professor, but the TAs are usually very knowledgeable in their subjects. Both TAs and professors are very helpful and nice--I've had a professor stop a two hundred person lecture to answer one person's question.
Am enjoying being here I really love it here. The campus is beautiful, the professors are wonderful, and Iowa City is adorable. And if you're thinking about English, like I was, Iowa City was recently names a UNESCO City of Literature. Considering that there are only five, that's kind of a big deal. The student body is friendly--I've had twenty minute conversations with people I didn't know just because we were in the same place at the same time--and overall, Iowa is just a wonderful place to be.
Bang for the buck Iowa's tuition is (comparatively) rather low, both for in state and out of state students. Considering what a great school it is, it's a pretty great deal.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with a student organization. Depending on what you get involved with (try for a smaller one, with 100 members or fewer, rather than an organization like S.T.A.T.), you could have a bunch of ready made friends. Depending on how social you are, a club or activity could make all the difference in how happy you are here. This is college; you're going to have to make your own opportunities, and joining an activity is a good way to start.
Also, the minimum course load for Iowa is 12 hours/semester. If you want to graduate in four years, though, you need to average at 15 hours/semester.Great for these types of students Motivated; while there are some classes where you can skate by and not do any work, those are few and far between. Just because it's a state school doesn't mean that everything's going to be easy.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I did not give the school 5 stars because a lot of the classes are taught by TAs, especially the introductory courses. However, the TA almost always knows what they are talking about.
Am enjoying being here I love being in Iowa City. There is a lot to do on the weekends, whether you drink or not. The school provides a lot of entertainment for those who don't drink, like free movies in the student union every weekend, and if you want to drink, that's also a possibility.
Bang for the buck Yes, if you are an in-state student. In-state tuition is extremely low. Out-of-state tuition is comparable to other schools in the area. It's definitely worth the out-of-state tuition, since the programs at Iowa are among the best. In particular, the Creative Writing program is one of the best in the world.
Tips for prospective students If you're considering joining a Living-Learning Community, do it. I thought about joining the Writer's Floor, but didn't, and I greatly regret it. My best friends live there, and it would be so much more fun to live on the same floor as all of them. Also, if you can find a Courses-In-Common to join when you're signing up for classes, join it, because they're awesome. It's so nice having someone to study with who's in other classes with you as well. It's much easier to make friends, as well.
Great for these types of students Those who would like a big school, and those who love making friends. There's a niche for everyone, and there are always other people with the same interests as you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot For the most part the professors work at a good pace and are very helpful. If your professors aren't helpful then your TA's for your discussions are always there to help you out. If you're having trouble someone is always there to help you.
Am enjoying being here Most people are very friendly which is nice, the party scene is changing now that the bars are no longer an option for those under 21 but it's still a lot of fun. Classes aren't overly challenging but you still need to work to get good grades which is what I enjoy about it.
Bang for the buck Somewhat expensive for out of state students like myself. But I would be paying around the same amount if I stayed instate and went to a school like University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.
Tips for prospective students Partying is a lot of fun but don't let it come before your schoolwork if you do then the next semester you'll be back home attending a local community college. Trust me you'll be kicking yourself if you let that happen.
Great for these types of students If you really love football then you'll love Iowa everyone here is in love with the football team. On game days people wake up at almost the break of dawn to start tailgating it's a really awesome experience tailgating and even better once you're watching the game in the stands of Kinnick Stadium. It's a good school if you like to party but also are serious about your schoolwork. But for the most part I feel like almost anyone can find their way at Iowa and will thoroughly enjoy it if you give it the chance.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors and overall teaching faculty at the University of Iowa are extremely competent and are veterans in their respective fields. If you have a question, they will answer it. The pacing of the classes is not overwhelming but that doesn't allow for any slacking either. The depth students go into their work is also quite deep so that's one of the reasons why the pacing isn't too fast.
Also, if you're interested in majoring in anything to do with writing or if you just have a heavy interest in writing fiction or nonfiction, Iowa is the school for you. The Iowa's Writer Workshop is the best writing school in the world. Amazing alumni, amazing reputation, etc.
The Honors Program is actually quite rigorous so if you're worried you won't be challenged enough here, just apply to be in the Honors Program. There are horror stories out there... you've been warned!Am enjoying being here The University of Iowa has a beautiful campus and it definitely helps that a river flows between the two halves of the campus. Contrary to what most people might believe, the campus is actually quite hilly which is nice just because it's not as boring as having just a flat campus. Sometimes, when you're tired, you'll hate those hills but it's not enough of a pain to be a significant problem.
In terms of campus size, considering how many students attend Iowa, it's surprising that it takes only about 20 minutes to walk from one side of the campus to the other. Before I chose Iowa, I was visiting other schools, and one school I visited took almost an hour just to get halfway across campus but that wasn't the case at all here.
The faculty and the other students at school are also very friendly. Literally everyone is willing to help you out, whether you are lost or if you just want help on a homework problem, and this willingness to help extends all the way from the custodians working in the residence halls to the professors who will be giving you lectures.
The weather, when nice, helps make the campus a beautiful place to live and study in. When it's cold though, it's REALLY cold. And I'm from Chicago - I would know!
In terms of things to do outside of class, there's the usual things you would find in a college campus like recreation centers and clubs for things you're interested in. It's easy finding a party to go to, if you're that type of person. One surprising thing I found out was the absence of a movie theater in Iowa City. Not a huge problem, but you're gonna have to take a taxi to get to the nearest movie theater. There really isn't any mall or anything like that of significant size so you'll have to go somewhere else like Coralville for that.
Oh yeah, and we take football very seriously. Iowa has always been a pretty strong football school but we're the best at wrestling.Bang for the buck One of the reasons why I chose Iowa, even as an out-of-state student was because of the cost. Although overall, it's still about $35000, that's still not bad compared to other public universities. Plus, they're pretty eager to hand out scholarships for all sorts of things. My GPA was pretty low but I still got a $6000 scholarship just for my ACT score so that was a pretty good deal.
What more can I say? The campus is beautiful, the people are very friendly, there's a lot to do here, the academics are strong but not overwhelming, and it feels like a fairly small school even though it's home to over 40,000 students combined.Tips for prospective students 1. Make sure you look over a map of the campus when you're choosing your residence hall preferences. You want to make sure that you don't choose a place to live in that is inconveniently located based on your needs or your lifestyle.
2. Keep an open mind when you go to college. You'll meet a lot of new people and they'll be just as nervous as you are. Don't just assume what a person is like from the first impression; get to know them to see what they're really like.
3. Kind of like what I said before, don't try too hard to meet people. Some people do that and they seem desperate or needy. That's a turnoff and isn't a very good way to start college.
4. Make sure you take everything you're going to need. Always double-check and triple-check just to be sure.Great for these types of students Iowa is great for all students. The school has done a great job of making sure that any student can come and work and excel to be successful later in life.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The U of I is an exhilarating place to be. Between academics, extra-curricular activities, and of course, football game days at Kinnick, you won't be bored. I'm happy to be a Hawkeye!
Tips for prospective students Get to know your advisor. They can give you valuable information about not only your major, but also what minors or certificates may best suit your unique personality and interests. Also, as a first year or transfer student, pick one activity that you have an interest in and that you genuinely want to do. For me, this was marching band. It was a great way to de-stress from studying and the front row seat in Kinnick Stadium didn't hurt either!
Academic Rigor Academics at the U of I are very reasonable. Usually, in those big lectures, it's helpful to get to know your TA, or Teacher's Assistant. These are graduate students that often grade your papers, tests, and award participation points in discussion sections. As a Communication Studies student, I feel that I have numerous resources to draw upon if I have a question. There are math and writing labs anyone can go to and recieve help.
Dorm Life As a transfer student, I've never lived in the dorms. But I've heard from friends who live in dorms that they're not bad. I do know that free bus routes run directly from most of the dorms to wherever you need to go on campus. This makes it easy to get around during those hot summer or cold winter days.
Food and Dining The downtown food is great! There are several restaurants located close to campus and they're perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat or something fancier if you're in the mood. Something unique to Iowa City and Coralville is Which Wich, a sandwich shop. Be sure to try the Oatmeal Raisin cookies; they're my favorite!
What to do for fun There's so much to do for anyone and everyone. Football is a big deal in Iowa City. We're a Big 10 school and thousands of people flock to the stadium on game day and even more watch at home. Tailgating and of course, the Hawkeye Marching Band, are always a highlight in the fall. In addition, there are a ton of activities offered on campus for people of all interests. There's a brand new recreation facility that has a rock climbing wall, swimmining pool, indoor track, and so many classes, including yoga and zumba. Also, a big event that happens every winter in Dance Marathon, which is a 24-hour event that raises money for those affected by cancer. Basically, no matter what you're into, there's something for you.

Food and Dining Food is generally good. You have some choices.
What to do for fun Shopping, watching football games, tailgating, joining annual dance marathon etc

Great for these types of students Who likes a small city with nice people around.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs that you can join!! Sports, religion, art etc (whatever you are interested in)

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The education is top-notch here at U of Iowa. The campus is beautiful and it's a Big Ten school with a small school feeling. At University of Iowa you will really feel like it's your home away from home.
Tips for prospective students Definitley have University of Iowa on your list of colleges to view. It is a nation-wide known university and people come from all over the world to attend here. I can't even describe how amazing this school it is, you really have to see it for yourself.
Academic Rigor The courses here are challenging as with most Big Ten schools. However, if you put forth effort there is no reason that you won't succeed. Don't slack off!
Dorm Life The dorms are much bigger here than any other college I looked at. Not only that, but the communities you build in your dorm will last you through college and even beyond.
Food and Dining The cafeterias here provide a ton of different options each day. It is super convenient for everyone living in the dorms as there is one cafe on each side of campus.
What to do for fun University of Iowa is known as a huge party school but there is way more than just that. There are famous comedians that come once a month (Keenan Thompson, Joel McHale, BJ Novak to name a few). They also have movies showing each weekend that just came out of theaters and aren't on DVD yet for only 2 dollars! Night games is another once a month thing that includes volleyball/dodgeball tournaments and fun for everyone!

The University of Iowa harbors great minds that are passionate about their area of study. The University of Iowa provides students with the skills necessary to accomplish their life-long goals.
Tips for prospective students One tip would be to take a look at the vast number of study areas that the University offers to ensure that you find the one that is right for you.
What to do for fun The University of Iowa is located right next to downtown Iowa City, providing numerous shops and coffee hangouts, along with what seems to be an exciting nightlife. Iowa City is only a short distance from Coralville, which has a large mall, a theater and an ice rink. The University also is often hosting events, whether through the University directly or through one of the vast numbers of student organizations.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Before each home football game, it is a tradition to rub Nile Kinnick's foot on the statue outside of the stadium.
Great for these types of students fun-loving, hard-working, friendly, really anyone!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I absolutely love Iowa, I've made really great friends so far and have so much fun. Also, although it is a big school, the professors and teachers make the transition easy. There are many resources that can help to improve a student's GPA.
Tips for prospective students Balance your time going out and your time studying. Going out is a lot of fun, but it is much more important to make sure that all of you school work is done before.
What to do for fun There are always activities being provided for the students by the dorm halls and RA's. Good opportunities to meet new people and get to know people in your dorm.
Bang for the buck It is an expensive school, especially for out-of-state students like myself, but the education that you will receive here is unlike any other. The school pride that every student had is unlike anything I have ever seen before.
Clubs and Activities There are so many intramural sports and clubs that are available for students to join; this is also another great way to meet new people and make friends.
Greek Life Greek life is increasing here at the University of Iowa. This, again, is an awesome way to get really close with new people. Everyone that is a part of the Greek system absolutely loves it and recommends joining to everyone.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences University of Iowa provides students with opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. There are so many leadership and educational opportunities as well opportunities to interact with people of diverse backgrounds. The Hawkeye community is friendly, positive, and inspiring!
Tips for prospective students Find several campus organizations you may be interested in and try them all out! You will never know what opportunities will allow you to meet the best friends you will ever have or learn something you will never forget. Take advantage of everything, even if it is outside of your comfort zone.
Academic Rigor There is always work to be done at The University of Iowa. Academics are a priority on campus, and students strive to stick to the 4-Year Graduation Plan. Professors like to challenge us to think and analyze everything on deeper levels, and it is through those challenges I have learned the most.
Dorm Life As a Resident Assistant, I have seen all sides of dorm life. People meet friends on their freshmen floors and stay best friends for the rest of their college careers. The dorms provide students with activities on weekends, and we strive to build positive communities within the dorm system.
Food and Dining You will NEVER be short of food in Iowa City. There are two dorms that provide on-campus dining, and there are so many restaurants in Iowa City. Students actually make it a goal to eat in every restaurant in the area before graduation, and very few students actually accomplish that goal. Delivery is an option for everything from pitas to sandwiches to cheap pizza to fine dining.
What to do for fun Many of the student organizations on campus offer activities on both weeknights and weekdays. You can go see current movies for $2, check out different concerts all over campus, attend a cultural event, or treat yourself to a nice dinner somewhere! There is ALWAYS something to do and be a part of!
Bang for the buck Though paying out-of-state tuition always proves challenging, getting a degree with which I can enter the workforce upon graduation makes tuition worth it. Tuition also pays for access to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center and helps fund many of the organizations on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The steps of the Old Capital are an unusual, but very popular, location on campus. People hang out by the steps to meet friends, spend time overlooking the campus, do some homework, or just relax. If you go up on the steps facing the west part of the campus, you can see the entire west side. It's a pretty great view.
Great for these types of students Any student can find their spot at Iowa. That's one of the great parts about being a Big 10 university. People really enjoy our gamedays, whether it's Football or Basketball. The amount of school spirit is amazing! In case athletics are not your thing, there really seems to be something for everyone.
Clubs and Activities Do you enjoy Bass Fishing? There's a club for that. Do you enjoy reading and writing poetry? There are a lot of clubs for that. Are you a vegetarian? There's even a club for that. There are also organizations on campus dedicated to bringing entertainment to the campus and city, promoting human rights, and much more. There are also many community service organizations; this past year one of our student-ran organizations raised over $1.3 Million this past year for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital!
Greek Life Greek Life is present on campus, though it is not something everyone needs to be a part of to feel a part of the university community. Our Greek Life provides students the opportunity to meet people with similar backgrounds and interests and do good within the community. If you do not choose to be a part of Greek Life, there are SO many other ways to meet people on campus, but Greeks help spread the Hawkeye spirit!
Campus Safety Iowa City is a pretty safe city and community. Like any other city, it is important to know your resources and have tools to keep yourself safe. There is a free service for women every night that will bring them to locations around Iowa City for free, there are emergency call stations located throughout the campus, Department of Public Safety officers walk through the dorms, and the Iowa City Police are prevalent on campus. There was also a recent program started on campus called Hawkeyes Watch for Hawkeyes, where students are reminded to look out for one another and help each other be safe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university of iowa has a wide array of programs to fit almost anyone's profile. although it is a bit pricey, there are many opportunities to try new things and learn about the world. be aware that you must be able to survive a large college where you have to be independent.
Tips for prospective students check out if your books are cheaper online ahead of time to save money! some books are available for free from one of the many libraries on campus. make the time to go to office hours and if they don't fit into your schedule, don't be afraid to email your professor or ta to ask if another time could work.
Academic Rigor most courses, especially ones pertaining to a particular major, are made to challenge students. gen eds can be a little easier but are a well deserved break. language courses can be super intense.
Dorm Life dorm life is loads of fun but it is very expensive. also be ready to share bathrooms. don't fall into unhealthy habits with the buffet style of the cafeteria. take advantage of the healthy eating options and the wonderful fitness centers.
Food and Dining there are great places to eat but you will have to pay for it. cafeteria food is alright but it gets old pretty quick.

Clubs and Activities unlimited clubs and activities for everything and at different levels. but don't try to do everything because you can't.
Greek Life sororities and fraternities can be fun but be aware that they have a very bad reputation here. be careful with what values they proclaim to hold to and what everyone else associates them with.
Campus Safety hawk alerts are sent out if anything happens on campus and people are notified right away. although there have been a few incidents, the university handled it very well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university has an eclectic campus that provides students with a variety of opportunities to join clubs and become actively involved with what interests them. the university is known for academic excellence in a variety of different fields. sometimes, it can be difficult to get into popular classes and because of the class size, it can be challenging to get the one on one time you may want or need with your professor.
Tips for prospective students make sure to get to know your ta's and professors. although it is difficult, it is possible. this will make it much easier to understand and stay up to date with classes. also, when you find something you are really interested in, make sure you pursue it and become involved with the many groups that are in that field.
Academic Rigor the classes can be challenging, especially dependent upon what you are studying. there is also help available during office hours and often, teachers are readily willing to respond to emails. make sure you take enough time to study and not get carried away with other things.
Dorm Life the residence halls look to be a little old but accommodate your needs. there are bathrooms near where ever your room is and there are also lounges to do homework or hang out with the people on your floor. i had an awesome ra through my experience who did great hosting activities and bringing the floor together. that made the transition much easier.
Food and Dining the dorm food is not known to be wonderful. however, you will always get full. both residence halls that use buffet style dining and offer a wide variety of items such italian, home cooked meals, sandwiches, salads, etc. you can definitely make it work.
What to do for fun the university again has awesome organizations and plenty of opportunities to get involved. there is also the ped mall which consists of iowa city exclusive shops and restaurants. it is very fun to people watch, shop, and get some good food. the athletics are also great and i have had some of the most fun at football and basketball games, along with other sports.
Bang for the buck the tuition is expensive, but where isn't it? it is average. considering this, you get a great education. if you're willing to put in the time to get to know professors, this will really help. also, make sure you do the work and it will all be worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i think the best locations are the ped mall and the pentacrest. both are very unique to iowa city and offer great people watching locations. they are right on campus and a good place to rest between class or on a nice day.
Clubs and Activities something for everyone and everything! school clubs, organizations, groups. you can find anything.
Greek Life this is not a huge part of the university. you can definitely be involved and there are plenty of opportunities, however it is not as common as at other institutions.
Campus Safety there is a bussing system called night ride that takes women to their dorm or apartment late at night (whether from the bars or from the library). also, there are poles with an emergency call button located in many places through out campus. all university buildings- such as dorms, the library, etc.- have rape whistles available that you can take to put on your keychain. there is both city and university police who patrol the area thoroughly, especially the later it gets at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university of iowa is located in the heart of iowa city where there's a ton of shops, restaurants, bars, and more. it's a spirited school that's dedicated to football, so bring your game face!
Academic Rigor of course the rigor of any school is based on your major and how much effort you're willing to put in. if you want good grades, you need to work for them. u of i is a big school, but they provide students with a lot of resources in order to get help with classes through tas, student tutors, etc. it's not the toughest school in the world, but you definitely need to stay on top of things in order to do well.
Dorm Life the dorms here vary quite a bit. there's apartment living in mayflower away from campus; there's burge the party dorm near campus and next to currier, stanley, and daum the honors dorm; and then on the west side of the river there's hillcrest, rienow, slater and quad. you're sure to make friends in the dorms and living anywhere besides mayflower isn't a bad walk to campus. if you don't want to walk because it's cold or you're feeling lazy, there's a free bus system open to everyone called the cambus that'll take you pretty much anywhere on campus you'd ever need to go.
Food and Dining the food is good. there are two cafeterias, burge on the east side and hillcrest on the west side. they offer a lot of different cuisines and have vegan and vegetarian options as well. it's a bit pricey, though.
What to do for fun iowa city is a bar town. everyone loves fac (friday after class) which is going to the bars on friday nights. they're cracking down on people under 21 though, who now have to leave the bars after 10pm. but don't fret! there are always a ton of house parties close to campus and some people join fraternities or sororities. and of course in the fall it's football season; the stadium is always filled and there's amazing tailgating outside the stadium every game with all the food you could eat and alcohol you can drink!
Campus Safety i've never felt unsafe in iowa city. it's a college town, and you'll pretty much only see students walking around. they have night ride for girls, and any girl can call and the night ride bus will pick you up and drop you off near home.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences iowa is a great university, the professors here actually care about the students and making sure that they get the grades they're trying for. the other students here are very friendly, everyone here that i have met has gotten along. and also the town is a great place to live, it's really a town that revolves around the school.
Tips for prospective students try and make a lot of friends! everyone here is so friendly it's hard not to have a bunch of friends. join a lot of clubs and events as well, there is so much to do here that you will never get bored, plus it will help you meet a bunch of people
Academic Rigor some of the courses are pretty hard, and some of them aren't as hard but all the classes have a lot of work and you have to put in a lot of time.
Dorm Life the dorms are pretty nice, the people that live here are great and they are close on campus that it's easy to get everywhere you need to. they are clean and they are big enough for two people to live in without feeling cramped.
Food and Dining the dining food is actually really good here, it may get a little repetitive (like all schools) but it's good food.
What to do for fun go out on the weekends with friends, take a bus to the coralville mall, watch movies at the bijou theater, go to a university sponsored event, go to a sporting event, hang out downtown with friends.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot With the online homework in some classes, there's instant feedback which helps you understand right away where you might have gone wrong and what you may need to work on.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being around people with the same interests.
Bang for the buck Definitely good quality for the price.
Tips for prospective students Don't miss lectures, read the handouts/notes before and after class, go to office hours & tutoring, do the homework problems and practice exams.
Great for these types of students For those that like the small town feel and the ability for personalized attention during office hours.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the teachers clearly love to teach their subjects, which makes it much easier to learn. The great thing about college is that, for the most part, you can take classes that really interest you, which also helps learning.
Am enjoying being here There are so many events and clubs to get involved with, which is great. There was an adjustment period, but meeting new people has made it easier. Iowa really tries to host fun, entertaining activities.
Bang for the buck It is the best priced Big Ten school, but it's still very expensive.
Tips for prospective students Accept early in order to place a residence hall application.
Great for these types of students Who love the big college atmosphere but also enjoy having a great close group of friends from various events and activities on campus.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is endless support from U of I staff. If you need help with something, you can definitely easily find it! The professors and TAs know what they are talking about and generally really care if you're learning the material or not.
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do! Everyone can find there place on campus. I love the city and the people I am around. It's easy to make the campus feel like home.
Bang for the buck Like I said before, THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO! There are ton of opportunities for quite literally everything. There's so many clubs and organizations. Also, the University has many scholarships you can apply for.
Tips for prospective students Join an organization or club. It's pretty easy to fall into the party routine at Iowa. (I had a lot of friends that NEVER partied in high school and came to Iowa and decided partying was for them.) But if you join something, you'll be having fun without being in a bad environment. And if you want to party a little still, you can!
Great for these types of students Literally any type of student! From bookworm to party rock star. There is a place for EVERYONE on campus. It's impossible to not find your place unless you're avoiding finding it!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I do feel like I am learning a lot here, and my classes seem to be very interconnected. I never would have thought that chemistry, philosophy, psychology, and rhetoric would influence each other but we discuss similar things in all the classes at times. The professors or graduate students are approachable and like it when students come in during their office hours. I can't wait to start taking classes in my major though, after these gen eds.
Am enjoying being here I love it here. There is always something going on, no matter what you feel like doing. I've met some awesome people since I've been here and joined activities that make me feel like I belong on campus. I have a close group of friends who live in my dorm and a group of girls from the rowing team as well.
Bang for the buck It is kind of expensive, especially if you're from out of state like me, but I think that it's worth it. I would probably be able to adjust wherever I ended up choosing to go, but I really feel like I made the right choice by coming here, even though it was more expensive. Take all the classes you can to get that bang for your buck and take advantage of the free things they offer-there are a lot! And we have to pay a fee for the new rec center, so I would recommend actually going there and utilizing it. It's extremely nice, and there's an awesome rock climbing wall too. Apply for scholarships too; they help.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. If you don't feel connected to the school, you won't like it and you will want to go home, or miss high school, or want to leave. When you are busy having fun, you forget about that stuff and just enjoy college. It's so much fun!
Great for these types of students Anyone. There are Big Ten sports and an honors program, parties and people who do not drink, and there are 30,000 students. You are very likely to fit in with someone with that big of a number.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am currently pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as minors in Mathematics and Computer Science. I can honestly say that I was very surprised when I came to Iowa for engineering. In a good way! As you may have guessed, engineering is not the simplest major in the books. It requires a lot of time, effort, academic proficiency and most importantly, patience. Although engineering may not seem like a fun major, Iowa makes it fun. I have met so many wonderful engineering students, as well as other students, at Iowa that I now consider my closest friends. For the most part, the classes are fun and the professors and assistants make them interactive in a way which makes learning (and understanding) fun. I won't sugar-coat it and say that class is always fun, or that you will always want to go; but the days of sitting in ridiculously boring lectures have morphed into fun learning sessions in which you frequently use hand-held devices to answer questions on the board or race a classmate to figure out an answer. School will always be school, but Iowa has made a point to make school fun and interesting for it's students.
Am enjoying being here I truly am enjoying my time at Iowa, and I'm sure that if you decide that Iowa is for you, you will too. The university offers countless ways to get involved with other students and people around you. From clubs to intramural sports, it offers all the great features of attending a large university. Iowa also brings in many different types of people which makes getting to know others a lot of fun. I have met people that came from my suburb of Chicago to a friend that was born and raised in Alaska. As I'm sure every soon-to-be college student is wondering, the Iowa social scene is just as fun as you've heard. There is always something going on downtown Iowa City, no matter what you feel like doing whether that be go to a bar, or just stroll and attend art and book street fairs. I certainly am having a great time at Iowa, and even after being here two years, am still discovering new things to do.
Bang for the buck I won't lie, Iowa is expensive; but so are other schools. Being out-of-state, tuition is pretty demanding as compared to being an in-state student. On that note, it is also on the less expensive end of out-of-state tuition, as far as attending a four-year university goes. I am getting a quality education, and I know that once I graduate, my degree will pay off, but make sure to dig deep for scholarships or grants before taking out those interest heavy loans. I keep thinking about all my friends that are graduating and getting wonderful jobs, and that keeps me going through my loan payments. You can totally afford Iowa as an out-of-state student, just make you look closely at all your options
Tips for prospective students There are two things I would say to a prospective student not only at Iowa, but anywhere. The first is of course so overused, but very true. GET INVOLVED! At Iowa, there are million and one things to get involved in. Sure, sitting at home playing video games may sound like fun, but college is about finding the people that you are going to share the rest of your life with, be that a relationship or a tight-knit group of friends. When I got here, I over involved myself, once I realized that I was stretching myself too thin, I took a step back and decided what I really wanted to do. I chose the Hawkeye Marching Band and the professional engineering fraternity here on campus, Theta Tau. Being involved in these two groups has certainly changed my college career. I currently live with a friend that I met in band and as well as being very close to her, I have a close-knit group of engineering friends to pull all-nighters with during finals week! Being involved truly made the transition to college easier. I know it sounds cliche, but it is truly important. The other piece of advice I would offer is to be sure that you focus on the important things. I know that I said get involved before, but make sure that you keep your eye on the prize- GRADUATION! You are here for an education, most students aren't paying thousands of dollars to party! It is fun to go out with the friends you make (by being involved!), but it also necessary to surround yourself with people that can help you achieve your goals in college and your goals for the future. Of course, I have to add HAVE FUN! Have fun learning, have fun meeting friends and discovering the wonderful world of college!
Great for these types of students Motivated - Iowa has some very difficult programs and in order to be successful, you have to be ready to give it your all.
Fun-loving - Although it is school, Iowa students (and fans) know how to have a good time. Game day Iowa City is awesome, full of fans, food and a grand time! Kinnick Stadium is the best place on earth, so if you're looking for a great sports team to be proud of and cheer for.. you're looking at the right place!
I think that Iowa has so many things to offer - there is something here for everyone, whether it be game day fun or an extensive array of classes ranging from GarageBand to the Beatles to Organic Chemistry or Vector Calculus.Login to rate or flag the reviews
