    Am learning a lot

    Coming from an online high school, I knew that taking classes online was no vacation. So far I've taken 9 courses at UMUC, and all of them have challenged me. The courses are interesting and the online component adds a unique discussion -- it's not your typical college discussion, as the students range in age from 18 to 40+, from soldiers to stay at home moms, from California to Iraq. The discussion boards are the main aspect of the classes and allows you to work with your fellow classmates (who may be virtually on the other side of the world from you) and collaborate ideas and opinions. If you actually do the work and are active in the discussion boards, you should be able to learn the material very well. What you take from your classes is determined by what you put into it. I can say that I've worked my butt off for the first year and I got straight A's.
    Am enjoying being here

    I am taking all of my classes online because of medical issues, and going to UMUC enables me to get my degree even while I'm sick. The teachers are amazing and are very helpful and involved in your studies, and the courses are so much fun and interesting (but definitely not a walk in the park)! I'm even more excited for the next semester at UMUC because they have changed their final exam policies to prepare you for real world situations. Now, you have final papers/projects that will summarize your course, or you may have a final exam online which you can take from the comfort of your own home. I truly enjoy taking my classes at UMUC!

    WOW, you get so much bang for your buck! I'm learning more than my friends who went to a local community college, but for less money! The price, generally for 12 credits, per semester is just over $3,000, and including books it is usually under $4,000. I have the option to take my classes online or at any of the associated University of Maryland locations... Meaning, if I signed up for a Biology class, I could take the course at College Park -- but not have to pay the big bucks! AMAZING.

    Taking classes online, in my opinion, is actually more difficult than going to an actual lecture, but you can get so much more out of it! Online classes need students who aren't tempted by cheating and who won't shy away from a lot of work and finding the answers on their own (no one is there to hold your hand). Make sure you get to know your advisor really well, especially if you are taking classes online, because when you are not immersed in a college atmosphere, you may feel overwhelmed when making decisions regarding your major... This means phone calls and emails to your Undergrad/Grad advisor and asking questions.

    Self-starters, students who are going to college to actually learn (not party), independent workers, and hard workers. Online college is nothing like the commercials try to paint them as; it is a lot of work and students need to take the work seriously in order to do well.

    Did learn a lot

    The learning experience at UMUC was wonderful, and my major was in Bachelor's in Computer Information Technology. The teams I was on during group projects were great. It helped me to learn teamwork, and meet deadlines.

    The course format was great in that I took both online and face-to-face courses. Every class fit in my internship at FDIC. The teachers were hit & miss because most participated in discussions while others waited weeks later.

    The cost of a UMUC education is quite reasonable. Also, UMUC has an abundance of ways to help gain financial aid through scholarships, grants, and loans.

    Great school, but it will hammer you if you are a student that studies poorly or is looking for a fast degree.

    Take as many college courses available to you while still at high school. If you plan on pursuing math take as many math classes available at high school. Apply for scholarships early as possible.

    They have a lot of options for eating on campus. There are many fast-food stores in main eating area as well as a coop. You can find a coffee shop in most buildings.

    They have a bowling alley, pool hall, and arcade area in main student building. There are on and off campus activities. There is a big focus on school life.

    If you are young and live on campus you will enjoy your experience. There are many ways to make new friends on campus. Involvement is encouraged at the UMD.

    There are many help boxes available. There are always campus police patrolling the area. There are other services available for your safety as well.

    The classes to short, the advisers don't care, the system is flawed, the departments cant not communicate via a database system so you get the run around often. The advisor (s) were all apathetic and not interested.

    If you want to do online classes, UMUC is the perfect school. The staff was friendly from day one, when I need assistance I call or go to the office and they were willing and able to resolve whatever issue I may have. Your online Professor is also with you every step of the way.
    Tips for prospective students

    Being that this is an online school, you have to be very focus and disciplined. Your school week starts on Monday and end the next Sunday at midnight. Try and schedule your classes early so you will make sure it does not get full. If you are not one for all online, they do have classroom and hybrid classes as well, which is basically you go to class one day out of the week and the rest of the week is online.
    Academic Rigor

    The classes are how you make them. The classes are eight weeks long so everything that is normally in a semester from August to December is crammed, so you really have to be focused. The professors are very eager to help. Because we are not in a classroom setting, our basic way of communication is thru weekly conferences. Make sure you reply to whatever topic it is for the week. When the professor responds, respond back to him or her. You will receive assistance from an adviser, that will tell you what path you should take with what ever major you have.

    University of Maryland- University College provides various types of degrees and programs for all potential students. Univeristy of Maryland - University College also has very interactive and professors who are expeirenced in the fields they teach. At University of Maryland - University College a semester is broken up into three sections to make taking many classes in one semester less burdening.

    Most students with University of Maryland - Univeristy College take advantage of its online degree programs. Pursuing a degree online, like myself, a student must be willing to chase after what they want. Work is much harder and getting errands done is more on the responsibility of the student. Also make sure different contact information for advising, financial aid and administration is all correct and be prepared to have regular contact with university staff.

    Professors are very helpful and the cooperative attitude of WebTycho, the online server the school uses for online degrees, gives students perspectives from both professors and classmates. So when the student enters the work force they have scenarios from all over the board.

    Near Adelphi there a lot of nice towns to go shopping and beautiful historical parts. There are also plenty of beautiful parks and trails to go walking, jogging or bike riding. Also close to the east coast, students can enjoy the sea side.

    Definitely bang for the buck. I currently pay out of state tuition, but do not mind because the programs that University of Maryland - Univeristy College offers are hardly found with the same quality anywhere else.

    Registration, financial aid, and other aspects of enrolling have to be closely monitored. The school does not do a very good job of updating you on your current status. Additionally, once you sign-up for a class you only have 12 days to pay for it.

    being a military spouse and always moving around this school offers various plans without having to change colleges every time we move. although i do wish sometimes that i could take some classes face to face or have the response to a question right that moment it has been pretty good. i would recommend this school to others who are always moving around and can't go to a normal campus school.

    i will be earning my degree by the end of this year. so far, the online courses have challenging, and the professors are very experienced in their field of knowledge. i give this school a high rating for its superb quality of education.
    Tips for prospective students

    this is for distance learning students. tip one- you will have to engage other students through the school's class portal. professors always assign discussion questions and expect frequent responses to other students' discussions. the minimum response requirements are usually two to three per discussion thread, of course this all depends on the guidelines set forth by the professor. this usually takes quite a bit of time, so plan two to three hours for weekly discussion threads. tip two- it's always a great idea to mark your calendar for assignment deadlines. it can get a little crazy if you are planning to attend classes full time. professors always give out a syllabus at least one week prior before the class begins. i always take advantage of this time to get ahead of my reading assignments.

    the online classes through this school are pretty intense. i usually spend about 8 to 10 hours a week for each class. the school now offers eight week courses, which has made it more challenging for me to find quality time to study. you can expect to write a paper for each class. sometimes, you will have to collaborate with other students to complete class projects. make sure you pull your own weight or you will frustrate peers.

    i have not taken my first set of classes yet but the prep is no joke. i think my classes will be full of information and knowledge. i have my book of classes and descriptions and it looks like great course work.

    i am not an on campus student. i also do not know if they have dorms. i have only been to the physical testing center.

    i have only been to the physical location of the testing site. i am an online based student. at the testing site they do have dining and food.
    What to do for fun

    once again i do not live on campus, i do not even live in the same county. i do know there are great college night hot spots in collage park, good food, shopping and sports centers with in a close range.
    Bang for the buck

    so far the cost of the collage doesn't seem to be too high. i think being a division on university of md, they have fair prices.
    Great for these types of students

    umuc is great for students who are parents, they can do their schooling online. also good for people with full time jobs. i think if you want to be fully on your own and not be bound to the school and its class schedules, but would like to be able to go there if extra help is needed this is the place.
    Campus Safety

    i have not been on campus, but i was at the testing center. i had to show id, sign in, wear a name tag saying i was a student, and there were security in a few different locations. i felt safe.

    i am currently enrolled in the online 1 year mba program which started fall 2011. i researched a lot of universities before deciding on this one and am pleased with my decision so far.

    once you narrow down your top 3 colleges, find out some helpful statistics about each one. what are the graduation rates? what are the demographics of this school? will i really fit in here?
    Academic Rigor

    this mba program is more difficult than i anticipated. it is an accelerated program with 11 specific classes. for my first week's assignment, i had to read the first two chapters in the textbook, 8 articles, watch 5 videos, then write a 10 page paper on my findings. it is challenging to say the least, but the professors and classmates are supportive.

    Bang for the buck

    this is excellent bang for the buck. the 1 year mba program costs about $30,000 regardless of maryland residency or not. a top mba program costs about $100,000, and mid level programs cost about $65,000.
