If you take the right Gen Ed classes, they can be very interesting. Definitely try to take classes that interest you or you will very likely be bored out of your mind. However, I so far get the impression that most professors and instructors are generally interested in their fields of expertise, and are enthusiastic about sharing that interest with students.

    Am enjoying being here

Through dance groups, drumline, photojournalism, and just hanging out with people in the dorms, I have met a lot of really great friends in my three semesters at UMass. Definitely find a group that interests you and get involved. Also, don't worry too much about partying... contrary to what some people think, not EVERYBODY at ZooMass parties every night, and if somebody can't respect your choices not to, then they're not worth your time. Another thing: the surrounding area is really interesting. Lots of great stores and restaurants, and it's overall an interesting community.

    Bang for the buck

Most of the dorms are surprisingly nice, and if you don't have too much more than the essentials, there's plenty of space. The food is decent, plus you get meal exchanges that you can use at most of the restaurants on campus. One hidden gem at UMass: the Newman Center Cafe. They have very good cheap food, and they serve it up very fast. Another excellent thing about UMass is that almost anyplace you need to go, you can take a bus - and they're all free.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely tour the campus. It can seem big and overwhelming, but once you get comfortable, it's not bad at all.

Some things to check out on campus:
    - Newman Center Cafe
    - University Gallery (at the Fine Arts Center)
    - The campus pond
    - The Bluewall
    - Berkshire Dining Commons
    - Studio Arts Building
    - W.E.B Dubois Library
    - Antonio's in Downtown Amherst
    - Central / Orchard Hill Residential Area

Great for these types of students

Even if you don't like to (or want to) party, don't rule out UMass. There's all kinds of options at UMass in every area - academics, housing, food, extracurriculars, and (most of all) people. However, if you're a homebody and can't handle a little noise once in a while or are uncomfortable being amongst lots of people, then this might not be the best option for you.

    Bang for the buck

For a great undergraduate education you don't need to spend tons of money, especially if you are planing to continue you education after undergrad. UMass Amherst has understanding professors, knowledgeable teaching assistants, award winning dining, and a campus designed to fit anyone's personality.

Great for these types of students

UMass is great for any type of student. The campus is made of six very different living areas named Sylvan, Southwest, Northeast, Central, Orchard Hill, and North. They each have a different style. So whether you're a study-aholic or you'd rather take it easy, there's a place for you.

Most of my general education classes are very easy, basic reviews of the advanced classes I took in college. The workload is minimal, which I find frustrating because I took extra classes to challenge myself. Even taking a 300 level class that is supposed to be taken junior year, I am still not challenged enough here. Most classes I am in are large lectures, which makes getting to know your professors nearly impossible. Lots of students are here for the parties and whatnot, and this makes studying difficult in the dorms. Also, some professors use online exams that you take on your own time. This means no memorization or understand required, they are open book.

    Am enjoying being here

During the week, I do enjoy it here. It is a beautiful campus and not too bad of a walk. Hanging out with friends from the dorm and stuff is a lot of fun, and there are always lots of cool activities to do. However, on weekends, it's always loud and there are drunk people EVERYWHERE. It's called ZooMass for a reason. I live on the quieter side of campus and yet I am often awakened by drunken yells. It's frustrating to me to not get any school work done over the weekend because people are so loud.

    Bang for the buck

I'm here on scholarship and financial aid, not paying a thing. This was the main reason I came here. It is a good school for most majors, and a GREAT school for some (management and engineering are the two I can think of right now) so if you can stand being around a lot of people who make a lot of noise definitely come check it out.

    Tips for prospective students

-Check out reviews online or ask your older friends who attend which professors to take classes with. There are some great professors here, and also some that are awful.
-Take Microbio 160. I'm not a science major at all, terrible at science in high school, but this has been my most enjoyable and interesting class
-Don't worry if you come in without a major. UMass is very good about helping you figure out what you want to do with your life. There is even a special class you can take to help you figure it out.
-Bring earplugs. Trust me, at some point you will need to write a paper or do homework on a Thursday or Sunday night, and this will be a lot easier if you can't hear the drunks.
-Keep an open mind about living areas. If you're coming here to party, there's plenty going on outside of southwest. If you're coming to study, look at living in northeast or central.
-Wear comfortable shoes when you come for a tour. Some of the dorms in Central and Orchard Hill are indeed on a very steep hill. The campus isn't super hard to walk - it takes about 15 minutes to get across - but the hills are painful in flip flops or heels.
-Visit a Dining Commons (Worcester, Berkshire, Hampshire, or Franklin) when you come visit. If you only eat at BlueWall or The Hatch, you won't get to see the food that you'll actually be eating most of the time as a student. The food is inconsistent in quality. If you come, buy lots of easy mac and other microwave foods

Great for these types of students

-partiers who want a cheap school
-in-state students looking for a cheap school with good quality
-commuters from the area (noise is much less of an issue if you live off campus)
-anyone who enjoys people watching. there's enough strange behavior here on weekends for a large psychology study, and it can be funny to watch the stupid things people do while severely intoxicated.

Here, all of the professors are extremely helpful. They have office hours for students who need extra help or advice, and they give constructive criticism on tests and essays. I have a few large lecture classes which I thought would be boring and impersonal, but the way in which the teachers teach makes the material easy to both learn and understand. In addition, the science classes that I am taking all overlap some of the information, so it is like what you learn is being supported. Also, the labs for the science classes are awesome! Yes, they are three hours each, but the labs you do are really fun and you can get a lot out of them, such as learning how to use expensive lab equipment. Also, the TAs for the labs tend to teach as well, so your knowledge gets strengthened there as well. Basically, you can learn however much you want to learn.

    Am enjoying being here

I come from a little town of 6,000 people, so I thought that I would hate it here where there are over 36,000 people on campus everyday. However, it isn't at all how I thought it would be. You get to know the people who you sit with in your classes and you also get to know your teachers and your TAs. As the semester goes on, the campus doesn't seem all that big any more, especially because it isn't as if everyone is in one place all at once.
Also, the dorms, especially the freshman dorms, are great. I'm in a RAP, or a Residential Academic Program, where I take classes with the people on my floor, which is great because if one person has a problem or question about a class, someone on the floor will know the answer. Dormmates are also great people to study for exams with because everyone is on the same page and everyone can contribute a little extra to the study sessions.

    Bang for the buck

One of the main reasons I came here was because of their veterinary program-UMass is one of the only schools in this area that actually has a pre-vet program/major. Even as a freshman I'm getting hands on experience already, such as taking vitals, looking for parasites, taking ultrasounds, and drawing blood. Also, working here will give me a huge step up on other students applying to vet schools, because while most people have experience with small animals (cats, dogs, etc.), UMass is giving me experience with large animals (cows, alpacas, horses, goats). In addition, everyone in this program is very helpful and gives a lot of advice, especially when it comes to looking for internships.
Also, there are a lot of great groups here to join that aren't available at smaller schools, like Goat Group, Ski and Board Club, Rock Climbing, Outdoor Club, and others. And there are brand new, multi-million dollar buildings that are beautiful and just amazing, such as the new gym (top of the art facility, with an indoor track and three levels of machinery), and the new science building (with lots of new computers and resource centers!). It's just amazing.

    Tips for prospective students

For any prospective students, try to get to know someone on campus whom you can shadow. It will allow you to see the campus from a student's perspective and get a taste for what the classes are like. Also, go on a tour of the campus- you will get to see various dorm rooms and also educational buildings. It looks big, but once you are campus, it will take you less than a week to find your way around. Also- DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK! A lot of people get lost the first week, and upperclassmen really are nice and are willing to point you in the right direction.

Great for these types of students

I believe that this school is great for every student. It's great for students who want to blend in, because of its size, and it's also great for students who want to stand out- all you have to do is participate a few times in class and you will definitely grab your teacher's attention. The science program here is the only one that I am familiar with and it is amazing. Between the new science building and all of the older ones, there are many different courses available and always places where you can go for help. Also- any one who wants to be a vet or do anything with animals should definitely look into this school. Yes, its a state school, but the veterinary and animal science programs are amazing and you will get hands on experience right away.

    Am learning a lot

UMass Amherst was not my first choice, but I was happily surprised by how knowledgable every one of my professors was. I feel that even after my first semester I am already more prepared to go out and begin working in my field.

    Am enjoying being here

The university is right in the middle of Amherst, which is a GREAT college town. There is always something to do or somewhere to go, whether it be right into convenient Amherst Center or Northhampton for some great shopping and restaurants. Everyone is so friendly on campus and there is a lot of night life. However, because there is so much to do, some people might become overwhelmed by the noise at night, depending on where you live. Also, because the school is so large (over 20,000 students) it is possible to get lost if a smaller school is more your style.

    Bang for the buck

Because UMass is funded by the state, the tuition for those that live in Massachusetts is fantastic when compared to the education you receive. It can be a bit pricey for out-of-state students, but not as much as any of the Ivy League or big-name universities. Plus, freshmen are guaranteed housing and I have always been satisfied with the food at the dining halls.

    Tips for prospective students

If there is a RAP offered for people in your major, take advantage of it your freshman year. I regret not requesting one because it was harder for me to forge relationships with people in my major because everyone else already knew each other from living in the same building. RAPs help because you meet people in your building that you have classes with and that have similar interests.

Great for these types of students

In-state students will benefit from the lower prices. Also, anyone interested in the sciences will find that UMass Amherst is a leading public research university. It is also great for anyone interested in meeting many new people and anyone not intimidated by the size of the campus.

There are a wide range of gen ed classes, so you can pretty much try almost every subject in order to figure out what major you want to study. There are also a lot of fun gen eds, so you'll learn something interesting and funny while fulfilling your graduation requirements. It's also very easy to find information on your desired major, both online, and at the school department offices.

    Am enjoying being here

UMass is a pretty big school, but it's pretty easy to get close to the people you live with and there are always opportunities to meet new people. There are always a lot of activities, academic and social, and not very difficult to find something to do, on or off campus.

    Bang for the buck

UMass is really helpful with financial aid and has great food that you normally wouldn't expect on a college campus. There are six different residence areas, and UMass even helps with nearby off campus housing if preferred.

    Tips for prospective students

Even though it seems awkward, try to develop a personal relationship with your professors. Approach your professor after class with maybe something they mentioned in class whether related to the subject or not (keep it appropriate), even if you don't need help at the moment. If you create a dynamic where the teacher can put a face to a name, you will have a much easier time receiving help when you really need it.

Great for these types of students

UMass is really great for all types of students because you can always find someone you can relate to.

    Am learning a lot

I learn something new every single day. The General Education requirements, which can be a little pointless, have actually expanded my mind a lot. I never knew I was interested in sociology until I took a class on gender, sexuality, race and culture. You never know what a class is going to teach you, so don't be afraid to take something you didn't think you were interested in. College is where you learn the most about yourself, so don't worry about knowing it all in the beginning.

    Am enjoying being here

I love all of the people, it makes it fun and there is never a boring moment. There are a ton of things to do on and off campus, there are free (new) movies every Friday and Sunday night, pool tables, craft center, greek life, every club/sport imaginable (including Quidditch). There is always something happening and if there isn't, get a few friends and make something happen.

    Bang for the buck

This is a fantastic school for the money. You get such a good education and it does not break the bank. Despite it's zoomass reputation, the teachers are highly qualified for the most part and classes teach you very interesting things and expand your view of the world and knowledge of things you'd never thought of before.

    Tips for prospective students

Get good grades, study for the SAT's, write a stellar essay (pretty sure that's what got me in) and also when you have a teacher send in a letter of recommendation, make sure it's someone who knows you and who can speak highly of you, because I think those are also taken into account more than you would think.

Great for these types of students

All types, although, there are a lot of big lectures here and you don't have anyone holding your hand. You need to be motivated to attend class and do the homework, there are no teachers barking at you to get your assignments in, they'll just give you the zero that you deserve (although, of course, if you're ill or there is a health or family or personal problem, they will take that into account, they're not heartless!)

The shear size of the University allows a student to explore every possible interest that he or she may have. A student can create a challenging but manageable schedule; it's all dependent upon an individual's desire to push themselves. In addition to the many courses this college offers, Umass Amherst is part of the Five College Program, which includes all the surrounding schools: Amherst College, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and of course Umass. It is possible to take courses at any of the other four colleges, making the possibilities endless.

    Am enjoying being here

Umass can appear overwhelming at a first glance, with approximately 20,000 undergraduate students and a very large campus, but it immediately feels like home. Everyone is extremely friendly and dedicated to making the most out of their college experience. All of the professors are determined to make a student feel like an individual and not simply an ID number, even in large lectures. This large University instantly becomes small, as you make great friends and become comfortable with your classes. The size allows a student to never feel trapped or bored, there is always something going on and someone who shares your interests.

    Bang for the buck

This school is very inexpensive, especially if you currently live in Massachusetts, and the education you will receive is greatly outweighs the cost. In today's economic world, the ability to graduate without large amounts of student loans is priceless, especially if you are planning on continuing on to grad school.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you check out the Commonwealth College, as well. It is the Honors college that is part of the University. It allows a student to take even more challegeing courses.

As of right now, I'm only taking GenEd requirements, so I can't speak for upper level courses. However, most of them are decent classes, and I'm doing well in them. I am learning plenty.

    Am enjoying being here

I don't really enjoy this school at all. It's hard to meet people, I think. If you meet someone, chances are they live across campus. Even if they don't, you'll never see them again. I barely know anyone even in my building.

    Bang for the buck

UMass is a good price. I get regional tuition because of my major, but I'm planning to transfer to UConn next year.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are extremely academically motivated, but don't get in to Commonwealth (the University's honors college), I wouldn't really recommend coming here. If I lived with people who were more academically geared, such as the students in Commonwealth, I think I'd be doing better.

Great for these types of students

Some people really love it here. I recommend talking to a lot of people before coming here, because you might really love it. UMass is definitely great if you're a partier. But if you're not, it's really hard to find anything that doesn't have to do with partying. Even some clubs are basically just people who use an excuse to meet people to party with, which really sucks if you don't party.

The faculty at the University of Massachusetts is of a remarkably high calibre. My professors have been more than willing to help me succeed, but you have to be responsible and take the initiative. There is a tutoring center in the library where you can get help with almost any class, and there are so many resources for academic success.

    Am enjoying being here

UMass is a big school, and it feels like it. Even with over 200 registered student organizations on campus, it can still be hard to find where you belong. The administration does not put students first, and often it feels like more of a corporation than a college.

    Bang for the buck

Slightly better than average, as far as value goes. Like anywhere else, fees are increasing while services like the Health Center and the Peer Mentors are being cut.

    Tips for prospective students

If you can, apply to the Honors College, you'll have access to smaller classes and special advisors. Know the culture of the Residential Area where you will be living. Southwest is like a small city, and it's all parties, all the time. Orchard Hill is quieter yet still friendly, but as the name would suggest, it's a bit of a hike to get up there. Central is like the hippie cousin of Orchard Hill, definitely more of the alternative types there. Northeast and Sylvan are pretty solitary, great if your grades are your top priority though.

Great for these types of students

If you're ready to jump in with both feet, consider the University of Massachusetts.

The gen-ed courses here are great! Because of the General Education Requirements I took some classes that I was truly interested in. The transition from small High School classes to large-scale lecture can be difficult. But all the resources to help are there. I have never had a professor who is not willing to meet with me outside of class and go over tricky material. There are also free tutors in the library as well as the writing center. These are both free to students and help tremendously!

    Am enjoying being here

I used to be a Division 1 athlete here. I had offers to transfer and continue playing my sport. But I truly couldn't find it in me to leave because I loved it at UMass way too much. The people, the environment, and the school are perfect for me. I honestly couldn't find myself at any other university.

    Bang for the buck

I am an out-of-stater so it is a little pricey. I could be going to a school that is less expensive. But being part of a school like this makes it worth while, to me at least.

    Tips for prospective students

If coming to UMass one should be ready for a new experience, it's hard to put into words what one incoming freshman will discover. You have to be open to new things and people, the campus is very diverse and everyone is super friendly. Also you have to be independent. You need to understand that you are one of many and have to provide for yourself. No one is going to go out of their way to help, but if you put yourself out there and show the desire to succeed people will notice and be more than willing to help.

Great for these types of students

outgoing, hard working, very good time management skills, someone who is able to balance both a social life and education.

There are a lot of opportunities for classes and filling your requirements for you major and general education.

    Am enjoying being here

I thoroughly enjoy being at UMass. I can go to the gym and join clubs as I please. I am currently a Resident Assistant for Freshmen and couldn't ask for a more well behaved and organized floor.

    Bang for the buck

Depending on your major you might be getting exactly your bang for your buck, but some are not always that. But, to counter act a lack of bang you always have an opportunity to change or add majors and minors.

    Tips for prospective students

I came from a small high school of 400. I came to UMas and loved how big the campus is and how busy students are. Some might say the campus is too big, but I can still show you the same faces I see going to and from class every day. Sure, it might take 15 minutes to get from Southwest Residential Area to the Sylvain Residential Area but those are the farthest points at UMass. The educational opportunities here are almost endless. Getting to know professors is key. Just saying Hi and going to their office hours to meet with them can make the biggest difference with your impression of a class. There are many Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships available to students. You can't ever say there is nothing to do at UMass -- whether it is class work to enjoying Amherst, America's Number 1 College Town.

Great for these types of students

I believe UMass is great for all types of students. It is really how the individual takes advantage of the campus that effects their impression.

Just from visiting the campus, you learn how diverse the student body is. UMASS students have a wide range of backgrounds, from students seeking higher education from China, to immigrints from Africa, to the wholesome average Massachusetts teenager. On top of the unique dorms, there are also themed halls called RAPs (Residential Academic Programs) and legacy halls (For getting in touch with your culture like in the Harambee hall or for certain lifestyles like the Wellness hall). It is impossible not to make relationships here.

Great school, great potential for awesome academics and learning experiences. Just need to put more money into the students and common sense things; more housing, more professors/courses, etc.

    Academic Rigor

Be careful! Classes are usually ALWAYS full an there are not enough for everyone. Some teachers are absolutely great some are not (hit or miss).

This university offers an outstanding location in western Massachusetts being part of the five college consortium. There are many fun and academic opportunities on campus and the sky is the limit. This university is an outstanding value for your money.

    Tips for prospective students

If possible go into a dorm with other students in your major for the first year so you can get to know them well and feel connected. Take advantage of the study groups and networking opportunities. Keep up with your studies as is this is a great opportunity of a lifetime.

    Academic Rigor

It is selective to get into this university and it is reasonably rigorous to stay in. There are plenty of opportunities for academic help in the form of tutors, study groups, professor accessibility etc.

    Dorm Life

I lived in a dorm with other students from the engineering major for the first year which was a great way to get to know other like minded students. The second year I moved up the hill to Orchard Hill which has been a great experience. Next year 4 of us are getting an on campus apartment which has four bedrooms and our own cooking facilities.

    Food and Dining

The dining plan is rated one of the best in the country. It provides a great variety of options with many dining halls including outstanding Asian dining for one. I try to focus on healthy eating and there are a lot of options for this including plenty of fruits and vegetables.

    What to do for fun

The five college campus in this area of Massachusetts offers a college students haven with many highly rated colleges around the activities and opportunities for meeting other students is limitless.

    Bang for the buck

This school is highly rated in the U.S. News and World Report yet it is one of the best values for the buck. It is more selective about who gets in because of this high value for the buck.

The school mascot is Sam the Minuteman.

Great for these types of students

It is great here for ALL types of students. For example, my brother was in the highly selective Commonwealth College and There are programs for students at every level. You have to be pretty smart to get into the school in the first place because it is well sought after.

    Clubs and Activities

I am an Engineering major and have been in a few major related clubs. These are helpful to networking and studying together. There are hundreds of clubs offered around campus, but I have not taken advantage of too many of them.

    Greek Life

I do not partake in the Greek life, but several of my friends have pledges and enjoy the camaraderie.

    Campus Safety

I have a job on campus and I feel safe walking around campus at all hours. There is a campus bus system and call boxes around campus. I also feel very secure in my dorm. Students should be normally prudent in safeguarding their belongings.

It's a place that you either really love, or you can't stand. Everything about this university is what you make of it. Opportunity lies all over the place.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely bring rain boots, jacket, and an umbrella. Get involved with at least one thing on campus; there are multiple sports clubs, band/orchestras, fraternities/sororities, and other things around so take advantage and meet people you can relate to! Never be afraid to ask a professor, teaching assistant, or an upperclassman for help, you can always find someone who's willing you help you out.

    Academic Rigor

I would say that it's all over the place. We have many professors that are lenient but most classes will challenge you in some way no matter what you're taking. Still, you can choose yourself how challenged you would like to be. So far, I'd say it's worth it to take the road of many difficulties.

    Dorm Life

It's all what you make it. There are many different places to live, and usually your living area or floor will schedule some fun things to do throughout the year so you all interact!

    Food and Dining

It's good and only getting better. There are so many places on campus or close to campus to find something that you like. Even inside the dining commons there are plenty of foods to choose from!

    What to do for fun

There are lots of fun things to do, but its all about what you're interested in. Go out and find things you like. Sports events, going to the rec center, seeing all sorts of performances in the Fine Arts Center..there will always be something going on.

    1. The campus is large, but the bus system works great; times between classes are long enough to take the bus across campus if you need to.
    2. There is a TON of diversity as far as the food goes so I strongly suggest you bring your wallet and try whatever you can.
    3. Watch out for bikes.

    Tips for prospective students

I've only been here for 1.5 semesters as a grad student, but I'd suggest becoming a loud-and-proud UMass Minutefan. Go to the games and get rowdy at night. Make friends with common interests and study during the day.

    Dorm Life

    Idk?

    What to do for fun

Tons of clubs on campus and even through the town. Go running or to the park and play frisbee. Go dancing at Lit. Ride the B43 to Northampton and go eat or shop. Take the bus to Boston or NYC for the weekend (MegaBus is sometimes $1 for inconvenient times). The farmer's market sets up sometime in March and runs through October, weather permitting.

The campus is quite large, so though it is in a rural town, you would never realize it. Many opportunities to get involved and gain experience. The amount of faculty and students on campus allows for diversity and many opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not rule this school out because of its location or reputation. Since the school is so large, you have the opportunity to meet many people and chances are you will find a group of friends you really fit in with. It is important also that you are able to get involved on camps and make professors recognize you, because it is easy to get lost in the large number of students.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is what one might expect at a college level. Most classes require a decent amount of work, but professors usually provide a syllabus for the entire semester, so it is easy to spread your work out, which makes it much less stressful. Some classes are more rigorous than others, depending on the level. It is important to find a method that works for you, so you are not stressing or cramming at the last minute. The academic rigor is not beyond any one's capabilities if approached with enough effort and time.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life varies greatly depending on what part of campus you live in. If you are looking for a high-pace environment, Southwest is probably ideal. But if you prefer a more quiet, low-key atmosphere, then Central may be a better option. But in the end, what will make your dorm life experience the best is putting yourself out there and getting to know your neighbors. The first few weeks of school, most people have their doors open, because everyone is new and everyone wants to meet people, so take advantage of that time, it won't last forever. You will be happy you did.

    Food and Dining

There are four dining commons on campus and a few other alternative eating facilities, that are located in the campus center. The dining commons provide a variety of food options, that you are sure to find something that you like. Some daily options include, sandwiches, soups, salad bar, fruit, cereal, pasta bar and ice cream, along with a variety of main food that changes each day. The other facilities are specialty foods such as pizza, burritos, smoothies, or coffee, these places require swipes that cannot be used like a normal meal swipe. But they are nice if you are looking for a change in food.

    What to do for fun

The campus is so large that there many options for activities. When the weather is nice, there is always something going on outside. Often people are playing ultimate frisbee, basketball, or just hanging out. The school offers a variety of events like free movie nights, dances, or concerts. Each year, there is a Spring Concert, which is $10 for students in which a few current artists perform. In the past there has been Carrie Underwood, Pretty Lights, Third Eye Blind, J Cole, B.o.B, 3oh!3 and more. There are buses constantly running that bring you to nearby places and are free to ride. The center of town is a 20 minute walk from campus, so there is always something to do.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, no matter where you go, and unfortunately prices keep going up, but there are some deals you can get. As a student, you get to ride the buses for free, you get free access to sports activities, which are very popular. There is a brand new recreation facility that is free to students. Often there will be various events held in your dorm room that provide free food too. There are many buildings with free computer access and wi-fi is available all throughout campus. It is all a matter if you take advantage of these activities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a circle on one of the walkways on campus, that is said if you walk over it, you will not graduate in four years.

Great for these types of students

UMass is notorious for being a big party school, but that in no way means you won't fit in you that does not interest you. What is great about the campus being so large and that there are so many students is that it is good fit for many students. If you are not a fan of the cold it may not be the best though. This school is great for anyone who likes the feel of a large campus and a strong community. It is good for students who have many interests and enjoy meeting people.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities on campus that will tailor to most student's interests. There are a variety of club sports, religious based clubs, nationality-based clubs, Greek life, community service based clubs, and much more. There is a parkour club, mock trial team, sustainability club, honors clubs and so much more. There are also many activities in the rec center that people enjoy such as zumba, kickboxing, or spinning.

    Greek Life

Greek life is quite prominent on campus. There are a variety of sororities and fraternities that may interest you. Many of the Greek house are on campus too, which makes it nice if you planned on living in the house. The Greek life is a great way to meet people and feel a sense of closeness. The Greek life on campus is also very community service base, and is often helping out in the community.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is very important at UMass Amherst, especially because it is such a large campus. The school has its own police force and they are able to respond to things very quickly. All around campus are blue lights which are places you go to on campus if you are in need of help, and campus police respond immediately. There is also the text alerts that are sent to your phone in case of an emergency. The school often performs emergency drills on campus, in which alarms can be heard all throughout campus in case of an emergency. All dorm buildings require your ID to enter, and at night, you must sign others into your building if they do not live there. The school does a lot to keep the campus and its students very safe.

The construction is annoying but the classes are good. Intermural sports are fun here, as are the clubs. Classes are, for the most part good, as is the food!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't take 8 o'clock classes, just don't. If a class is full and you're waitlisted, talk to the teacher, they might be able to let you in.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are challenging, like my intensive arabic class, while others like my creative writing class, are just fun. And then there are those that put you to sleep. It really depends on the teacher, like in any school.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice, not huge, obviously, but there's enough space for roommates to not feel on top of one another. The only real issue is UMASS taking in more students than it can adequately house, thus a lot of lounges have turned into quads, robbing us of a place to hang out.

    Food and Dining

The food is good, it's won a lot of awards and such. And there's variety along with a lot of new things to try.

    What to do for fun

I do intermural soccer and co-ed soccer, which are great. There are a bunch of fun clubs, like the quidditch club, and the gym facility is awesome for workout classes or just working out with friends.

    Bang for the buck

It's good, especially for instate-ers, and the merit scholarships are good. it's also wonderful if one's in Linguistics, because our department is the best in the country.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Bill Cosby buys lobster for us once a year. He denies it, but we know the truth.

Great for these types of students

Since UMASS is so big, it's got a lot of different people. artsy kids stick to OHill or Central, Engineers and science kids go to North, and well, everyone's heard of South West. (that's where the name 'ZooMass' comes from)

    Clubs and Activities

Every club I've done has been a blast, and I look forward to joining more in the upcoming semester.

    Greek Life

I don't participate in it, but I do know that Greek life is less than 5% of the student body and that Pike has a terrible reputation of it's treatment of women that go there to party, which makes me wonder why in the world it is still around.

    Campus Safety

UMASS has a good alert system and there are escorts if you're out late at night. There are also bluelight around campus.

With over 20,000 students, UMass is a city within a college campus. It provides you with an unlimited range of academic resources, booming social activity, and a comfortable lifestyle away from home. It doesn't hurt that the school also has some of the best tasting food that a college can offer.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of how big the school is and how much resources and help is available for you. The people here are welcome to help and the resources are extremely valuable.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers and academic criteria at UMass are strict when it comes to helping you reach your highest potential. With a huge student to teacher ratio, many teachers expect you to ask for extra help instead of finding the time to offer it to 100+ students.

    Dorm Life

Never boring. And if you have personal problems that you are dealing with, peer advisers live in the dorm buildings with you and are always available to help you out and make dorm life as comfortable as possible.

    Food and Dining

Umass most likely has some of the best food served by a college campus. Always in the top ranking of many publishers' Best college food lists. I can never lose weight living here because i can never say no to the food. Too delicious!

    What to do for fun

We have more than 100 campus organizations and clubs to join and participate in, such as ballroom dancing, fencing club, and the always cool Quidditch team. The parties are always fairly fun on the weekends. Sometimes, the most fun one can have on campus is just hanging out with your friends or hall mates.

    Bang for the buck

Its a huge school with top grade education, an active social atmosphere, and many positive life-changing opportunities- all for the low cost of state-school tuition and fees. Definitely a bang for your buck.

UMass Amherst offers a high quality education, especially for a state college, and it is very affordable. Many people who apply are given grants, scholarships, and loans, plus the living conditions are great. It has a reputation as a party school, but if one is looking for a good education I recommend UMass Amherst.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get caught up in the partying, or your grade will take a hit. Make use of the many oppertunities to get involved, meet new people, learn, and have fun. The school offers something to do for everyone!

    Academic Rigor

There are a wide variety of classes, from basic 101 courses to honors college courses. It's easy for someone to challenge themselves if they come here.

    Dorm Life

Unless you want to live in a loud, overcrowded, dirty area, don't live in Southwest. It's the party hub, and mainly the cause for the party reputation and negative stereotypes surrounding the school. But otherwise, most of the areas offer distinct personalities to fit every student.

    Food and Dining

The food here is amazing! They have all kinds of cuisine, not to mention four dining commons and places to eat all throughout campus. The meal plan is worth it!

    What to do for fun

Joining clubs, sports teams, going into Amherst or North Hampton, and attending one of the many events going on around campus. Also, the Mullins Center is always having musicians and entertainment.

    Bang for the buck

It's an affordable state school with great chances at getting a good education. I think it's rated the 4th best university in all of Massachusetts.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus is very old, built in the 1860s. There are a few supposedly haunted areas, as well as fraternities and sororities. Every semester a bunch of people join in to play Humans Versus Zombies.

Great for these types of students

Versatile students wanting to have new experiences and meet a ton of new people. The campus is enormous, so you're bound to make great friends and learn new things all the time.

    Clubs and Activities

There is literally a club for everyone and everything.

    Greek Life

A bunch of different frats and sororities with their own personalities and traditions. Some are like the stereotypical Greek club, while others are more community service/culture based.

    Campus Safety

The campus is pretty safe, with call boxes all around and a full-time police department located on campus. But one would want to be escorted back to their dorm at night if they live in Southwest because it's the party area. There's also a place near Sylvan which is very sketchy and should be avoided.

UMass gives you a good education with a lot of choices. There's really something for everyone at this school. I'm really happy I ended up going to school here!

    Tips for prospective students

If you take advantage of the academics and activities then you will never be bored. There is a lot of diversity, so no matter what you choose to do there will be an opportunity and other people with your similar interest. Check out the activities fair, it actually helps and if you like sports then check out the gym, there's always activities going on and a really good recreational sports program.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major the classes can be very intense and challenging or can be rather pointless. Gen-eds are easy to get through and then once you get into your major it's all up to you. There's a pretty large class selection so usually how hard your schedule turns out is up to you. If you take the education seriously then it can be very good.

    Dorm Life

Freshman year RAP's (floors based on interest) really try to focus on a community experience, plus you get to know everyone easily because you have a class with them. RA's are usually pretty cool. Each section of campus really has it's own style and vibe, so pick it based off of what you like. Good luck getting into where you want to though because there are a lot of students trying to get housing in certain sections. There is also a new honors dorm coming in a year.

    Food and Dining

There are 4 dining halls that range in how great they are and then there is the campus center with various food places. The food is usually good at the dining halls though. Lots of choices. Plus, there's atleast always pizza if you don't like anything else!

    What to do for fun

There's always activities going on around UMass. Sports events, concerts, parties supported by the school, parties not supported by the school. It all depends on what you're looking for. There are even free Friday and Sunday night movies in the campus center. Football tailgating and hockey games are the best, along with our Halloween!

    Bang for the buck

If you are an in state student then this is an excellent school to go to for a very reasonable price. If you are out of state it's still a good school, just not the cheapest. Warning: Prices seem to keep going up

    Greek Life

There is a very active Greek life at UMass that has recently been growing. A lot of sororities and fraternities have there own houses on campus too.

    Campus Safety

The food is awesome! The on-campus dining options are great, especially at Berkshire Dining Hall.
There are so many varieties from chinese to mexican to italian to japanese to local fast food outlets etc. You'll definitely find what you like here. The quality of the food can be improved by a bit but still not bad at all.

    What to do for fun

The party scene is huge! But there's something here for everyone..from sports to intra-mural clubs, activities etc. Just get involved and explore your options.

Great for these types of students

Energetic, Fun to be around, Active members of their communities.

The professors here are amazing and really want each and everyone of their students to succeed!

    Am enjoying being here

I couldn't of asked for a better school. I absolutely love it here at UMASS Amherst! There is so much to do and the food here is fantastic.

    Bang for the buck

UMASS Amherst is a state school so it thereby is most likely going to be cheaper than others. This school offers so many opportunities to learn and to higher your education that there is no need to look anywhere else. Students can receive get job offers from attending UMASS Amherst.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip would be to know whether you want a big school or little one. Most class sizes are about two hundred students; it may sound like a lot but believe me you get used to it quick. Another tip would be eat at the dinning commons. The food here is great!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who are self motivated and are those who can seek help without the help of others. You have to learn how to balance school work and the social life. It is great for those who are independent and like big schools.

    Am learning a lot

Throughout all of the courses I have taken at UMass Amherst, I truly feel I earned every pennies worth in terms of knowledge gained. Despite not always getting into my first preference classes, I can not deny that every course I have been enrolled in has been structured and equipped with an in-depth understanding of the material. In terms of my major, I am part of the college of engineering which has a very diverse program that has allowed me to see the various aspects of the field from a managerial perspective to a technical based out look to getting hands-on lab experience alongside the nations top graduate students.

    Am enjoying being here

UMass Amherst with its diverse campus and plethora of student activities really has something to offer everyone. There are just so many different types of students and opportunities available from honor societies to intermurals to an extensive Greek life program that it is very easy to find a niche and people with similar interests as yourself. Through hallway events freshman year and campus sponsored activities I have made some deep friendships and have enjoyed everyday of my college experience despite the coursework. The university really puts in effort to put on quality campus events such as Morning Mixers, activity expos, and various shows and dances that are really a blast if you take advantage of them.

    Bang for the buck

The university is certainly a bang for the buck. On one hand, it is located in the small town of Amherst which has small bookstores, coffee places, and unique shops to escape the pressure of exams and the large university feel when needed, but it is also only a bus ride away from all the commercial stores offering college necessities and food options. The cafeterias also offer a diverse array of food including pasta, pizza, Asian cuisine, salad/fruit bars, desserts, sandwiches, and burgers among other food each night. The university also hosts themed nights at the dining halls where musicians or a certain style of food may characterize the evening's menu.

    Tips for prospective students

    Some tips for prospective students:

-Check out the Blue wall eatery and the Hatch in the campus center, Burritos are surely a UMass favorite.
-Make sure to check out at least one UMass Football game--get there early if you want to tailgate because it fills up fast
-Bruegger's Bagel in town is a really nice place for a weekend breakfast
-The Dubois Library is not the only place to study-- make sure to check out Lederle library, ISB, and the Isenberg school of Management for alternative study places
-Grab and Go meals can make life so much easier and is available at all four dining halls.

Great for these types of students

With the constant amount of activity going on at UMass Amherst its is great for students who are self-disciplined and can balance work and play.
Great for students who are looking for a well-rounded college experience and don't mind the large campus feel and don't mind bundling up in the winter for the trek to class.

    Am learning a lot

There is such a variety of classes at UMass, which makes picking classes very easy. Majority of teachers are more then willing to go the extra mile to help out if you're stuck on anything! So far at UMass, I have not only learned book material, but a lot about myself. Every professor I have had has made me think outside the box, and relate content we are learning to our real lives.

    Am enjoying being here

Living on campus is such a fun, wonderful experience! There are many many versatile people to meet. There is pretty much a club for any type of interest you may have, and if there isn't, you can easily start one! There is never a dull moment on campus and always so many events to attend such as a volleyball game on Southwest Beach, a concert, or community service opportunity.

    Bang for the buck

No school is cheap, but UMass is a public school, so the price is significantly less then all the private schools. There is also a New England Regional price that provides a discount on tuition to any student that lives in a NE state besides Mass. and none of their state schools offer the major the want while UMass does provide it. Undergrads also receive free local bus transportation, as well as free access to the new and very nice recreational center.

    Tips for prospective students

The academics are very good, but don't be afraid to get involved, it will only help you as a person, as well as expand your group of friends. When it comes to school work, don't be afraid to ask your professor or TA! There is also many resources on campus to help you, including tutors for every different type of study.

Great for these types of students

UMass is the perfect school for anyone who is outgoing and not afraid to always be surrounded by many people. UMass is a very big school, and if you aren't willing to get involved you may feel lost.

    Will learn a lot

Umass is one of those schools; what you put in is what you get out of it. If you take the initiative, there are thousands of opportunities for you to learn everything that you've ever dreamed of. One of the perks of Umass being such a big school is that they have classes and majors for almost everything. If you don't see a major you want, you have the option to create your own major. Also, you have the opportunity to take up to two classes per semester at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College.

    Will enjoy being here

Although I always thought I would be going to a small school, after visiting I was no longer afraid, per se, of going to a school as large as Umass Amherst. It is almost like a city, in that there are always places to go and things to do, but it seems small and intimate enough that you will never feel lost or out of place. There are also two bustling, beautiful collegetowns nearby.

    Bang for the buck

Financially, Umass was the best option of all the colleges on my list. Their in-state tuition is very reasonable, and it is not difficult to score some great in-state scholarships and grants. For out-of-state students, the tuition rate is not that bad, but you students have amazing opportunities to earn great scholarships that bring down the price tag by 10k or more.

There is something special for EVERYONE at UMass Amherst. The classes are challenging and educational, the clubs are diverse and welcoming, and the campus is beautiful all-year round. Everyone will have a great experience at this top-notch university.

    Tips for prospective students

Students looking to attend UMass should first visit the campus DURING the school year and follow a tour and explore on their own. The campus itself has so much to offer, and without a tour it may be overwhelming, but a structured tour may not allow you to see everything you want. Aside from the campus itself, clubs, dining halls, and dorms, the academic buildings are worth checking out according to where your major classes will be held. Don't worry if you are confused or lost, SO IS EVERYONE ELSE and everyone is more than willing to offer advice, direction, or just an anecdote for help.

    Academic Rigor

No matter what your major is, you will have to take General Education (GenEd) courses to round out your schooling. Some may think these classes are pointless, but they may end up being some of the most fun or thoughtful classes you take. The advisers and professors at UMass are stern, but friendly, and always willing to help. Just ALWAYS go to class!!

    Dorm Life

Residential areas at UMass are known for being pretty segregated, but are always welcoming. It is difficult to enter dorm life as a freshman, but everyone is friendly and everyone is in the same boat as you, which makes it a great time to make new friends! R.A.s are a great resource for ANYTHING since they have been in your shoes already.

    Food and Dining

When they tell you that UMass Dining is award winning, they are NOT lying! Every dining hall has options for everyone, whether it be the salad bar, vegetarian selection, sushi, pizza, or pasta. There are enough choices to allow you to eat something different all week. The campus center and various concession areas around campus give you variety like burritos, burgers, chicken fingers, noodle bowls, sandwiches, or meatball subs.

    What to do for fun

Amherst has been voted the best college town in America multiple years in a row and they were not wrong. Amherst Center offers a wonderful middle ground between the public university of UMass and the private, beautiful, Amherst College. The shops and restaurants (and bars) give you a variety of places to visit and explore.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs on campus offer a way to make new friends while sharing similar interests. If there isn't already an existing club for what you love to do, then you can easily start one on your own!

    Campus Safety

Campus PD offers an emergency text service that will alert students of any safety alerts that occur on campus. The residential security monitors make sure everyone coming into the building either lives there or is checked in and is the responsibility of a resident of the building. Help boxes are located all across campus and offer a help button, phone, and light for anytime students are crossing campus in the middle of the night from the library (which is bound to happen at least once).

UMass has a very diverse population that has a lot of opportunities. Despite your area of interest there is always a group of people for you. UMass allows for the student's voices to be heard in several facets.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Visit Campus
    - Eat in our Dining Halls
    - Bring a fan to orientation
    - Visit the town of Amherst
    - Go to the 23rd floor of the library and look at the 360 degree view of campus

    Academic Rigor

As a Carnegie One Research Institution UMass allows for our students to participate in undergraduate research which enables our students to be distinguished when entering the job market. 94% of our faculty hold the highest degree in their field, providing a challenging education.

    Dorm Life

With 6 areas to live in there is a living style for everyone. At UMass you can pick down to the room you live in which is extremely convenient when you want to live with friends.
North - Apartment Style Living; 4 singles 2 bathrooms living room and kitchen

Sylvan- Suite Style Living - A horseshoe suite with single and double room occupancy as well as a bathroom and living room for each suite.

Northeast- VERY close to academic circle. A lot of math, science, and engineering students live there since it is so close to class. Old New England feel to it, with the rolling green hills and big brick buildings. *Oldest area on campus and also has the smallest rooms on campus.

Orchard Hill - Separated from campus a little farther of a walk, great place to separate school from home. Quiet up there, beautiful!

Central - Centrally located between north and south campus.

Southwest- City style living, 1/2 of the on campus population lives in south west.

The rooms are nice a good size, you can choose from z rooms, corner rooms, square, quads, single, triple, room with nook, room with walk in closet.

    Food and Dining

Foods great, it can get repetitive at times but with so many dining halls and YCMP Swipe eateries there are a lot of options. Late night dining is always a favorite and most students enjoy Bershire Dining Common the best. We do have sushi every night of the week!

    What to do for fun

    There is so much:
    - Something Every Friday: our on campus movie theater
    - 290 registered student organizations
    - UMass Night Outs - school sponsored night of events a couple times a semester
    - Uptown in Amherst for Nightlife (if you are 21)
    - Sporting Events
    - UMass is an off Broadway stop.

This is my home. UMASS Amherst is unlike any place I have seen because it is this massive city cradled in a gorgeous, mountain-crested valley. Also, even though the campus is massive, you don't feel anything less than at home in your niche: U R UMASS.

    Tips for prospective students

Do exactly what you want, go exactly where you want, and say exactly what you mean. A school as big and open as this one ensures that you will find the people who fit you, so you should never squeeze into a friendship because that distracts from your growth.

    Academic Rigor

This place will not crush you and, to be honest, once you get there, there is an immediate sensation that your professors are pulling for your success as much as you are. There is work, but you need it. This institution gives people the tools to become whatever they want to be, but it is up to the individual himself/herself to make use of those tools.

    Dorm Life

Once again, just be honest with yourself and with who you are. The reputations about the different sections of campus are true; people do tend to fall into patterns of behavior based on their location on campus. Ironically, this does not necessarily create a divide. We are all a part of the culture and we know it: no matter what anyone jokes, UMASS wouldn't be the same without all of its edges. We need you to be you. That is sort of an unspoken mentality in the dorm life, and I have never been so comfortable in my own skin anywhere in my life the way I was in my dorm days.

    Food and Dining

There are no words. Berkshire dining commons is almost ludicrously good: you cannot go wrong because there are simply so many options. They are also very good about making their foods as healthy as possible across campus and are constantly thinking up new ways to innovate the dining experience

    What to do for fun

This whole place is a party. There are always people ready to do something outlandish and it is an amazing feeling: when you think about it, this is the only time in your life you are every truly almost exclusively with people your own age. Also, the gym at UMASS is incredible and their fitness classes have the potential to bring the fighter out of anyone.

    Bang for the buck

For in-state residents this place is almost a steal, especially for nursing, business, and engineering majors. The reputation of the nursing and business programs are so well-known, that it virtually eliminates the supposed stigma of attending a public university. Also, engineering students here are just honestly worked so hard and pushed so far, that it cannot help but give them an edge.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Never. Ever. Ever. walk through the eye. This is a circle surrounded in a semi-circle by benches and across from The Cage. It may look like it is only a pattern in the ground, but a true UMASS student knows that the risk of terrible bad luck is NOT worth the five seconds extra that it takes to skirt it. Also, the area of grass extending from the basketball hoop in SW is called the Southwest beach because that is where everyone gathers to tan and to play frisbee when it is nice outside.

Great for these types of students

    1) You are ready to come into your own
    2) You feel comfortable being a small (but integral) piece of a larger whole.
    3) You're not sure what you want to do.
    4) You're not sure who you want to be.
    5) You want to really LIVE your college years.
    6) You're prepared to be devastated when graduation rolls around.

    Clubs and Activities

Honestly, the clubs here do not have much opportunity to be truly active beyond the board. It seems like more of a Facebook thing at this point. With that said, intramural teams are great ways to meet people and have a good time and club teams revive any lingering desires for a varsity experience.

    Greek Life

Greek life here is not crazy, but it definitely has the same element of drama and obligation. The truth is though that these people genuinely have each other's backs when push comes to shove.

    Campus Safety

This campus could not be more safe. I have gone for walks at 3 or 4 am and there are STILL other students walking between dorms, walking back from the library, or picking up food. There are always PEOPLE. You will never be in a situation when you are without aid and the campus is heavily lit all night long. Also, there are help phones rigged across the entire campus and cops perched all over the place.

UMass is a really fun place with tons of people of all backgrounds. You get to meet so many interesting people. The academics are also great and there are always people here willing to help you with anything.

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard! UMass is getting a lot more competitive, so make sure you keep your grades up, get involved and maybe take some challenging high school classes. Take a tour of the campus to make sure you can see yourself here, although it shouldn't be hard to! RAPs are also a good idea to ease into college life as a freshman - you get to live with other freshmen who have similar interests. UMass has a reputation as a big party school. There are lots of parties if you're into that, but if not, it's incredibly easy to avoid. Also, if you get accepted, come in with an open mind. I know lots of people who didn't want to come here at first, but all of them ended up loving it.

    Academic Rigor

I only just finished my freshman year as an undeclared student, so I pretty much only took general education requirements - those were not too demanding, but you do have to put work in to get a good grade. Of course, everything depends on the professor, the level of the class, etc. Once you get into classes for your major, classes will be more difficult. It also depends on what you're focusing on - math/science courses obviously tend to be more rigorous than, for example, communication courses. But all in all, I would say the academic rigor at UMass is about the same as other schools.

    Dorm Life

The dorm sizes are average. Your living satisfaction depends on the type of person you are and the area you live in - each area has a certain stereotype, which are for the most part true, although you can find others like you wherever you live. Southwest is for preps and partiers, Central/Orchard Hill is for hipsters, and Northeast is for 'smart people.'

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good. The Berkshire D.C. is the most popular among students, but they have decent food at all 4 D.C.s. There are also other locations (student-run businesses like Greeno Sub Shop and Pita Pit, as well as the Blue Wall and many more) that have really good food.

    What to do for fun

The towns of Amherst and Northampton are lots of fun, and there are busses that take you there for free. There are also a lot of events that the school plans.

    Bang for the buck

I'm not sure about out-of-state students, but if you live in Massachusetts, UMass is one of the more affordable options. I definitely think the education you get here is exceptional for the amount you pay as an in-state student. Most of the professors are great people, enthusiastic and always willing to help.

Great for these types of students

All types of students are able to find their place here. Like I mentioned, different types of students are sort of divided by living area based on their interests, so find the best one for you and you'll make great friends. It also doesn't matter if you're into partying or not, if you're really dedicated to your studies or are more laid-back...UMass has so many students that you'll find your place easily.

    Campus Safety

They have little stations scattered around campus where you can press a button and get help if you're ever in a dangerous situation. Every once in a while, they conduct emergency tests, fire drills, etc. At the entrance of every dorm building, there are security monitors checking IDs and signing guests in to make sure anyone who's not supposed to be there isn't sneaking in. I've walked through campus alone at night and haven't ever felt unsafe.

Whatever you put into classes is whatever you will get back from it. If you are unable to concentrate in large classes, you probably want to look at another school. I love the large lecture classes, and find them less stressful than being in a small classroom. I sit close to the front, and am able to take notes and actively listen. Not to mention, there is such a large amount of classes to choose from, you'll find something that you like.

    Am enjoying being here

UMass is one of the most fun and lively campuses there is. There are always events happening in the dining halls, dorms, or just around campus. The sports events are absolutely crazy, and everyone gets really into them. There is such a diverse population of people that everyone is able to find people to get along with, and most people are really nice.

    Bang for the buck

While the school is much cheaper than other schools in the state, we don't have to go without. We have the largest public library in the world. Our classroom buildings are up to date, and some of them are currently being renovated. Our dorm buildings aren't bad, and the dining halls are great. You definitely don't feel like you're being ripped off for not paying the high tuition. It's a great place to do undergrad, especially if you plan on continuing education.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay true to you, because in a big school like this, it's easy to get lost sometimes.

Great for these types of students

People who enjoy being around a lot of people. People who are outgoing and open to lots of diversity. People who are able to concentrate and focus without a lot of one on one attention from the professor.

Going from a small high school to an enormous campus, I never felt overwhelmed by the size or population of UMass. What is amazing about its size, is that its full of diversity, where anyone is able to find their best friend. I found mine at orientation! Aside from the social scene academics range from 500 person lectures to 15 person classes. Because my major, English, is smaller than, say, biology, many of my classes were in the 20-30 person range allowing me to get to know the professor. In larger lectures most professors here do reach out to the students by having flexible office hours and contact information as well as available teaching assistants that can also help with any academic or personal issues. Do not hesitate to get to know a professor because making a connection with them will allow you to feel more at home and more excited to be in college academics.

    Am enjoying being here

After three solid years on campus I feel more at home at school than I do in my home town more than half of the time. The number of times a day one can make a new friend is limitless. Not only is this an exciting feature of a larger campus, but also the chances of feeling embarrassed when one falls down the steep Orchard Hill walkway is practically nonexistent...because the likelihood of running into someone you may know can also happen. You may get to know a ton of people on campus, but the school is still big enough to create personal space.

    Bang for the buck

UMass's solid academic classes provide a education equal to if not greater than many of the private institutions in the area. I have had UMass professors tell my classes that we are not lacking the intelligence of private school kids, if anything we may be doing our families justice by saving an extra 10-20 grand by enrolling in a state school.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to at least one state school early on, especially UMass Amherst. There is no early admission fee, the benefit to applying to UMass early is that you KNOW whether you got in sooner rather than later.

Great for these types of students

UMass is great for students looking for a drastic transition out of high school. It also serves as a great place to branch out and meet completely different people. UMass is meant for students who can handle a large school and not feel so small.

The quality of the classes is really great, even the huge lectures here are totally worth your time, and you do learn a lot in them. Professors are intelligent, easy to learn from, and helpful. There are a lot of options for classes, so you can easily pick subjects that you care about and cater to your interests, as well as picking a totally new class to try out!

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere on campus is great. There are so many people, you're bound to meet a group that you click with. There's always somthing going on on campus: plays, guest speakers, comedy shows, a Chinese acrobat group even came to perform last year! The surrounding towns are very interesting and fun as well, Amherst definitely has the quaint, small town, hipster vibe going on.

    Bang for the buck

The total cost of attendance at Umass is about half of what I was going to pay at the private college that was my first choice school. And I'm so glad I decided on Umass, because I'm getting a high quality education without paying and arm and a leg, and entrenching myself in future debt.
Sometimes financial aid can be a bit iffy it is a state school), so make sure to know all your options.

    Tips for prospective students

Do a lot of research about the different kinds of activities and resources on campus. It'll definitely come in handy; I ended up being able to get an awesome on campus job in September of my freshman year because I found out about the place the previous August.
Also, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, take advantage of everything going on. Try new things, talk to all different kinds of people!

Great for these types of students

To be honest, since there's such a big variety of majors, programs, and opportunities, I think Umass would be a great fit for almost anyone!

I love being at UMASS. Its a great place and environment because there is so much that you can do. You can get involved in a club or volunteer work. You can join a sport team or go route for the University's teams. And you can make great friends on campus. It is a great place to meet new people and get an experience that is completely different from what you might be used to.

    Bang for the buck

For out of state it may seem expensive but compared to other schools it is not. Also you have so many different opportunities here that I think that it is worth it to spend the money.

    Tips for prospective students

If you can join a RAP. My freshman year I was in the psychology RAP. It was the best year of my life. I made some really good friends, because they were in classes with me but also lived on my floor. Also the good thing about it is that you can take classes with people that are on your floor but take classes that you are interested in with out those people too. Its the best of both worlds if you are afraid of going to a big school.

    Will learn a lot

I feel this is a great school and it has a lot of awesome equipment in the science department at least.

    Will enjoy being here

There looked to be a lot of stuff to do around campus and in town.

    Bang for the buck

I find it to be somewhat expensive. If there was more grant money available I would have given this part a better rating.
