You will learn so much about yourself and other people. There is an astounding variety of people and cultures. All the professors I've had are fantastic and willing to help if you're willing to put in the effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep up your grades for sure, but mainly get involved! Get out there and volunteer, its easy, fun, and you gain some great experiences and friends. Colleges want students who will become a part of the community and be able to interact with everyone. But going to college also helps with this :)

Great for these types of students

Everyone! All types of people come to the UO from all over the world, shy, outgoing, outdoorsy, adventurous, open-minded, curious, fun, crazy people!

    Am learning a lot

I went to a top-rated, public high school and thought I was going to coast in college. I am taking 2 chemistry classes, math and English and am really being challenged. I have also been able to get the help I needed from professors and affordable tutors

    Am enjoying being here

I did not know how I was going to feel about being away from southern California and the sunshine. The environment here more than makes up for it! The campus is everything I hoped for and more. I love the school spirit and there are so many activities to choose from. This turned out to be a perfect fit for me. I have met so many great people here.

    Bang for the buck

Absolutely worth it. I wish I lived in Oregon so I could pay in-state tuition, but with my scholarship from the school, I am not paying much more than I would for an in-state California University.

    Tips for prospective students

Go see the school and talk to some of the students. Be prepared for rain, but it's no big deal. Consider a bike with fenders.

Great for these types of students

I can't imagine anyone who would not enjoy being here. The education is terrific, the people are awesome and the school spirit is unbelievable and so exciting.

    Will learn a lot

Professors are very highly qualified and will teach a lot. Great learning experiences everywhere.

    Will enjoy being here

Although I most likely won't go here because it doesn't offer much for my major, it has an awesome business school and pretty good art/agriculture program. I grew up with a duck fan and we pride ourselves with having one of the loudest, most-spirited stadiums in the country. I love my DUCKS!

    Bang for the buck

From what I've heard and seen, tuition isn't that bad if you live in-state and there is a lot of financial aid. Great college though.

    Tips for prospective students

If you get a bike, that's good campus transportation because it is mostly flat and a lot of it you can't drive through anyway. Since it's such an environmentally conscientious school, many people bike to and from class. It's really beautiful.

Great for these types of students

Green people, but also those just looking for a pretty good party scene. Great places all around (drive an hour or so east and you reach mountains great for shredding in winter or drive an hour west and get to the beautiful beach. Also the desert is a few hours over if you'd want to go there for some reason) Great well-rounded community with very friendly people. Just make sure you can pronounce Oregon right. (Or-Eh-gen)

The U of O is a great college where the classes and professors create an awesome environment for learning. Teachers help students find a suitable field of study and the different ways to go about it. All the lower level classes are interchangeable with different majors so you are not wasting time or money.

    Am enjoying being here

Eugene is a wonderful place to start your life. It is a very nice community and a great college town. The school itself is small enough to feel the individual attention yet large enough to surround you with positive enforcement.

    Bang for the buck

Oregon utilizes their tax money and puts a large effort into education. In-State tuition is affordable for the majority of families and encourages people to get a college degree.

    Tips for prospective students

Do as best as you can in high school and apply early to the university. There are more and more students applying each year and that makes it a little more hard to get accepted. Having a strong high school transcript helps along with extra circular actives.

Great for these types of students

Adventurous, hard working, open minded, and goal oriented students are all welcome to the university. Anyone who has a will to continue their education will fit in and grow at this university.

If you know what you want to study, take the time to visit that specific department. This is good advice regarding any college. Do your best to learn about the research interests of faculty and graduate students in the department, but at the least, ask the undergraduate advisor what makes the department at the UO special. I was lucky that that linguistics department at the UO is a hidden gem, and I am so grateful now that I didn't get into Brown University, which was my top choice school. While the UO is a big school, if you want to take your studies seriously, you can. It is also worthwhile applying to the honors college. While the honors college may not be as tight-knit as the brochures try to tell you, the classes and the professors there are very interesting, and there are many advantages to being in the honors college--from a private, cozier library to the chance to write an honors thesis, which will look great when applying to grad schools.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of Oregon campus is beautiful, and there are a lot of great things to love about Eugene. Being from Arizona, I find the Pacific Northwest to be a very welcoming place. Besides the number of places you can visit a short drive out of town, Eugene is a nice place to live. The people are quirky, and it's easy to make friends. The only thing I don't like is the downtown, which is severely lacking. Eugene is a smaller city than I expected it to be. Also, food in the Northwest is very bland for someone from Arizona, and you won't get a lot of good Mexican food up here.

    Bang for the buck

I think the UO is worth it--if you can get some scholarships. It is more expensive for me to go here because I am an out of state student, but I have been awarded the Western University Exchange Award, partially because I am from another west coast state, that enables me to pay only 150% of resident tuition. However, it is still very pricey if you are from out of state. I don't regret even for an instant that I went to school in Oregon instead of Arizona, but maybe my bank account will in a few years! I believe it is a variety of things (such as the friendly people and my outstanding department) that make the price tage relatively worth it for me.

    Tips for prospective students

Again: visit the department of the major you're interested in. If you just have a few in mind, visit all of them. Apply to the Honors College. Though it has a different curriculum which can sometimes be a pain, it's worth it. Also, make sure to look into clubs and other extracurricular activities at the UO. Don't just look at the academic programs! If there are any events (lectures, etc.) going on on campus when you visit, go to those too! You might get an idea of what sorts of interesting events will be taking place on campus.

Stick around for more than just the tour. Visit the art museum on campus! Don't be afraid to explore the campus or ask questions to strangers.

It is not the most difficult school to get into, so I really don't think tips for the application process would be very useful. It's more important to know how to evaluate a school, to see if it's right for you. Keep in mind, though, that you have the ability to make yourself happy almost anywhere.

Great for these types of students

I really believe that almost anyone could find a niche at the UO. Wealthy or not, ambitious or not, sporty or not. The only thing someone might not want to be is very politically conservative, but even republicans will not have much difficulty finding friends and activities at the UO.

Yes, I'm learning tons. I'm learning how to stay organized (now that I live in a dorm with no space I have to be clean.) in my living space and with class materials. I learned all that in my first term big time. Plus, the material in class....obviously. That's all a matter of how hard you study and stay organized and on top of your work load.

    Am enjoying being here

U of O is a diverse place with all sorts of people. It has all sorts of classes available and so many student groups, clubs, and organization to enjoy. There are also so many events put on, so you never get board. The events also are usually free to students or come with an extreme low cost.

    Bang for the buck

It is a great school. If you want the University Experience then I recommend it. But I will say that General education classes are probably just as good as the ones offered in community college, for one the class sizes are smaller and you pay less per credit. So if you tight on money and aren't set on the whole University then Community college may be just as fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to try new things. There are so many activities you can be involved in on campus. Do the readings, trust me when mid-terms and finals comes around you'll be happy you did. Cramming is the worst and especially in General ED classes because all the material is really basic and covers a wide range of one subject, rather than focusing on a specific part.

Great for these types of students

Any. U of O is a diverse place with all sorts of people. It has all sorts of classes available and so many student groups, clubs, and organization to enjoy. Oh yeah, and if you like acapella. One of our acapella groups On The Rocks was recently on the NBC's the Sing Off. So if your into singing this may be the place for you~!!!

There is such a wide variety of studies on campus. Not only do you learn an incredible amount in a short amount of time but you actually get to pick something that interests you. Every term I take such different classes that all can count towards my general education. The teachers are so available to the students that I have a relationship with all of the my professors.

    Am enjoying being here

The vibe of Oregon is by far my favorite part. The campus is so relaxed, and green all the time. Though I will admit it rains a lot it also stays green and lush all year around. I genuinely love every second I get to be on campus and walk around with all the rest of the Ducks. You never go more than five feet without seeing some type of Duck gear. The eclectic mix of hippies and die-hard football fans makes UO different than any college I have ever been to.

    Bang for the buck

For me to go to school here from out of state is has become quite expensive, but it has become just as expensive to attend any school in my home state of California. Oregon's academics and free tickets to any sporting event make me glad I am spending my money here.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to approach professors, they don't want to fail you. Don't put them on a pedestal, go to their office hours and don't leave till you get that question answered! My second piece of advice is to be spirited and take pride in being a Duck. There are so many clubs and events happening nonstop on campus, try to go to as many as possible you meet so many people that way.

Great for these types of students

Oregon is the place for relaxed, chill students. This is not the campus for high maintenance and materialistic. The people of Eugene are friendly and chill and so should you be if you're going here.

    Tips for prospective students

DO NOT ALLOW SENIOR-ITUS TO RUIN ALL OF THE HARD WORK YOU HAVE PUT IN THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL! Colleges and Universities (including the University of Oregon) pay attention to your class load and grades even AFTER you get accepted. Be smart - do not take classes that would be an easy A and do not let your grades slip because you think being accepted means that the University cannot change their mind. This is important for Admission as well as scholarships.

    Academic Rigor

People who go to college are there to learn. The U of O is as rigorous or easy as each person wants to make it. If you are going to learn, make the decision to take the difficult classes and challenge yourself.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms for part of my freshman year. It was no the place for me. But... if you like the whole party scene and spending crazy amounts of money.. GO FOR IT! You never know if you will like something until you try it.

    Food and Dining

The University of Oregon is located near countless restaurants and dining areas. But with the variety of quality food on campus there is no need to go to near-by restaurants. If you can think of it, you can find it on (or within walking distance of) the U of O campus.

    What to do for fun

The U of O is in Eugene - Track Town USA. There are numerous outdoor events year round (including the Olympic Trials), as well as indoor fun. Bowling, swimming, movie theaters... I don't know many other places where you can go to the movie theater and see a movie for $1.50 or less if you go on certain days.

    Bang for the buck

College is pricey no matter where you go. The U of O offers several scholarships as well as work study and grants to help with that. You definitely get what you pay for at U of O (except for maybe in the dorms).

Great for these types of students

Take all of the different groups and types of people that you can think of and multiply that by 1000. Whatever type of student you are, you will be able to find others like you at U of O.

    Clubs and Activities

There are too many to list. Go to uoregon.edu and see for yourself!

    Campus Safety

Not only does the U of O have the Eugene Police department keeping everyone safe, but there is also a Department of Public Safety right on campus. There are several posts with bright blue lights all over campus. If you feel unsafe just press the button and DPS will show up and save you. There are also several services that you can call late at night for a FREE ride back to your dorm or within a 5 mile radius of campus (I think it is 5 miles but I am not positive). There are still bad things that can happen if you aren't cautious, but overall it is quite safe.

    Will learn a lot

I am entering this school year as a senior, and the upper division classes look very interesting and challenging! As a Marine Biology major, I will have the unique opportunity to study at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology for three terms. The majority of learning is hands on at OIMB, and I am greatly looking forward to all the field work and research!

    Will enjoy being here

Eugene is a great sized town with a lot diversity. The campus is beautiful and full of bike/walking paths to explore!

    Bang for the buck

Out of state tuition is a little high. I am a non-traditional student, so I did not receive as much financial aid as I hoped for. About 70% of my attendance fees will have to be covered by an outside source, such as a private lender or scholarships.

    Tips for prospective students

Biking is the way to go! There is limited parking on campus.

Great for these types of students

    Green thinkers and outdoor enthusiasts.

    Am learning a lot

Moving from Hawaii to Oregon was a huge culture shock for me, but definitely worth it. I had to learn how to navigate around the city, apply for classes, and do everything on my own, without my parents. Not only did I have to adjust to the heavy course load of college classes, I had to learn how to live alone for the first time in my life. I also had to learn how to live with a roommate, which is such a fun and different experience. I am also learning a lot about the city of Eugene, which is by far the most diverse and beautiful city I've ever been to!

    Am enjoying being here

At first I was homesick, as all students will be moving away from home to an entirely different city, at a school where you know absolutely no one. However, once I got to know my roommate, make friends, and realize that the world is such a big, beautiful place, I fell in love with the idea of being on my own. Especially in a town like Eugene. The people are so nice and supportive here, and the environment is amazing. There are trees everywhere and the people are always smiling. Not to mention all the fresh air!

    Bang for the buck

Most definitely worth every penny. The professors are incredible and definitely make time for you, and ensure that you succeed. I have found that being in large lecture classes of over 500 students isn't really at all that different from being in a small class of 30 students. The professors take their time to try and get to know you in every class, which is a nice feeling because it makes you feel important, and motivates you to do well.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get too set on a major. Sure, you might think you know what you want to do in your life when you apply to colleges, but once you get there, you're going to be faced with a lot of different people pursuing different degrees and you will acquire new interests as well. For example, when I was applying to colleges, I wanted to be an architect, now I want to go into psychology or become a teacher. Just keep your minds open and be positive throughout the whole application process. Sure, its long and it can be repetitive and tedious, but keeping a positive attitude will ensure a positive attitude on your applications as well!

Great for these types of students

The University of Oregon is great for everyone! But in particular, people who love the outdoors, fresh air, and smiling. Also, for people who don't necessarily need the sun to survive...it rains a lot.

What I love most about the U of O is how not only am I learning a lot in the classroom, but I am also learning a lot about going green. Also, there are so many different activities around campus and around Eugene that makes it impossible to ever get bored!

    Am enjoying being here

Like every freshman, my transition from High School to College was really difficult! I have roommate problems in the beginning, got lost on campus, and was generally way overwhelmed! However, the good news is that stage does no last forever. I love being here now! I love doing my own things and in my own way and on my time.

    Bang for the buck

The University does offer some great opportunities and there are a lot of things other then academics that you can get involved in. However, in my opinion there are a few things here that are very expensive and not the best quality.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest advice is to not give up when you first get here. Things will be so different in some good ways and maybe some not so good ways, but wait it out. You just have to give yourself time to adjust. This is a great school with a lot to offer!

Great for these types of students

Whatever you are interested in, you will find it at the University. We are a great green town full of life and opportunity for everyone who is willing to find it.

    Am learning a lot

I am definitely learning A LOT!!! The students at this school are definitely expected to do a lot in not a lot of time! You learn a great deal and are required to learn quickly! The professors and all of the teaching assistants are very helpful, well at least the one's I've had, and are always available for extra help in their office hours if you need.

    Am enjoying being here

At first, I really wasn't that fond of Eugene, and of the University of Oregon. Coming from a really small and conservative town, this was a whole new experience and such a huge change! The longer I stayed here the more it has grown on me, and I now love it. People from smaller towns tend to look at this town and see just how big it is, but it is actually not that bad. Hardly ever do I have to go from one end of the town to the other, I am able to stay within the community in which I live which helps to give it a smaller feel if that is what you are looking for. At the University it seems as if you will always find a group of people that you fit in. There are tons of clubs and activities with tons of great people.

    Bang for the buck

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! I came to the University of Oregon as a freshman and let me tell you it was one of the best decisions of my life! In high school I was never truly challenged and coming here was exactly what I needed. The courses are rough and tough and full of so many learning opportunities. I truly feel like I am getting the best education I could possibly be getting. I know that there are a lot of general education requirements and that can sometimes become overwhelming, but it is those classes that help to make sure you are majoring in what you actually do want to do for the rest of your life. Also these classes are what help to make well-rounded students and I really appreciate that the university makes us take these classes because without them I would not have chosen to take some classes that I learned so much in. I know that when I graduate from the University of Oregon I will be well equipped to enter into the job market.

    Tips for prospective students

#1 My biggest mistake while being at the UO is not living in the dorms my freshman year. I chose to live in an apartment that had roommate matching, and was very disappointed. You make so many friendships with the people that live in the dorms and you are able to have that experience it is worth so much more than you really think! I cannot emphasize enough how important living in the dorms your freshman year is.
#2 Join a club. There are so many to chose from that it almost becomes overwhelming, but find one if not two or even three! Especially if you find a club relating to your major, you will make lasting friendships and also you might meet someone that you can take classes with and study with.
#3 Do not let yourself get behind. The UO is a very fast paced university even if you fall behind for a week catching up here can be nearly impossible.
#4 GO TO EVERY FOOTBALL GAME!!!!

Oh yeah and make sure you own a raincoat and some rain boots!!!!

Great for these types of students

ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE!!! This university is so diverse you will find a place you fit in. One thing that I personally think is a trend here is being willing to try and experience something new!

This school is great. It's accepting of all types of people. And there are so many great opportunities to get involved (volunteering, sports, clubs, etc.)

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your advisor. Talk to your professors. And go get tutoring. Don't fall behind. And get involved with things you love!

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, will depend on your work load. However, I've found that even if your physical work load is light, the thinking they have you do really opens your eyes to your life and experiences and ways to improve the future. There can be a lot of personal challenge along with work load.

    Dorm Life

Rooms are fairly small, but you get to know your roommate well. Food is pretty good! Overall, it's a great experience!

    Food and Dining

Food on campus is awesome. Dorm/dining food is so good, most people go back to eat dorm food once they've moved out!

    What to do for fun

There are so many things outdoorsy to do (so many places to hike- Spencer's Butte, Skinner's Butte, Hendricks park etc.) There are also a few bowling and/or putt-putt golf courses around. A few different painting pottery places, and SO many places to eat. Oh, and you can't forget the 2$ theatre!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You have to know all the football cheers if you're going to go to a game. It's a must because you have to participate to get the full experience!! (Ex. It never rains in autzen stadium!) Also, most campuses don't sit right next to a gorgeous river. My suggestion? Stay in Eugene for a summer to float the river.

    Clubs and Activities

Club sports is an AWESOME way to stay in shape, meet new people, and to have some fun!

    Campus Safety

There is crime on every campus- there's no way to escape it. However, we have a lot of emergency buttons scattered throughout campus. Department of Public Safety will come to you based on the button you push. If you feel unsafe to stay in one location, you can walk along the path and continue pushing the buttons and they will follow your trail.

The University of Oregon is the ultimate in diversity. The students here are not only diverse ethnically, but also very culturally diverse. You'll meet people interested in every conceivable subject imaginable and we're all eager to make friends.

    Tips for prospective students

Invest a lot of time socializing during the first two weeks or so. I made the mistake of going home a lot during the first two weeks and by the time I went looking for friends, I noticed that most students had been well integrated right away.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of what you study obviously depends on what you study. As a biology student, I feel as though the subject can be extremely difficult at times, but never too difficult to keep me from getting an A! On the other hand, the pre-business classes I have taken have been incredibly easy. There might be something to say about students intending to study business rather than biology though.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are great, I've never had a friend visit from another college that wasn't insanely jealous of our diverse selection for dorm food! Students are all eager to make friends here. Though some times it takes a little initiative, Eugene is a very easy place to get comfortable.

    Food and Dining

Dorms are great, I've never had a friend visit from another college that wasn't insanely jealous of our diverse selection for dorm food! My favorite places are the Mongolian Grill-esque stir fry joint, and the chipotle-esque fresca Mexican place. And that's just one part of dorm food! Just off campus one can find any kind of food they want from Greek to Hawaiian to famous Voodoo donuts! Oh and I can't forget the trendy coffee-sandwich bar on campus open till 2am every night! And did I mention I'm a vegetarian?

    What to do for fun

There are many things campus-wide going on all the time. There is probably an event going on campus every single day. The city of Eugene is notorious for it's beautiful marathon and cycling scenery. On the weekends, students are often out partying at Greek-life functions, watching live music at the co-ops, or having a good time with close friends.

    Bang for the buck

As an Oregon resident, I pay in-state tuition. I know tuition is rising all across the country but I don't think there's anywhere, especially in Oregon, where I could be more happy, and for the relatively cheap in-state tuition I'm paying, there really aren't any comparisons.

It seems to me that student clubs are an extremely active thing at the University of Oregon campus. I can see the schools larping team practicing outside my window quite often, and from what I hear, UO club teams such as Ultimate Frisbee and Lacrosse are some of the best on the west coast! In addition to sports, there are other really active groups such as the composting club, the Zombies vs. Zombie Hunters are always toiling on campus, and the student government.

Great for these types of students

High schoolers that love everything Oregon stands for: individuality, fun, appreciattion of the environment, and congeniality.

I especially urge those who didn't feel like they fit in very well in highschool, everyone fits in Eugene, TRUST ME!

    Greek Life

From what I hear, the Greek life at UO is about half as large as regular schools. On campus, I still feel like I see a lot of Greek insignias on sweaters and shirts but they aren't obnoxious or anything life that. It seems to me that the point of Greek life here is simply to make a few more friends, get involved, and always know where the party's at.

    Campus Safety

Occasionally we get campus reports of break-ins, maybe three of four times this year. While that is somewhat scary, I don't feel as though I am every alone in Eugene. Even in the middle of the night there are groups of people walking along sidewalk, so there's no need to feel alone or un-safe at night.

While the weather is sometimes a bit dreary, the University of Oregon's spirit and atmosphere more than makes up for it. Between crazy and exciting football games in the fall, to the street fair in the spring, the University of Oregon has it all! Come here if you want the real college experience, one that you couldn't trade for anything else.

    Tips for prospective students

Winter term take classes that are harder than the ones you take Fall or Spring term, because the gloomy weather is the best for late nights in the library. A rain jacket and rain boots are a must. Spring term get excited to whip out your shorts and flip flops for some gorgeous sunny Eugene weather!

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take, you can have the hardest term of your life of you can breeze by. Classes are awesome! They range from 25 people to 300, so you have a great range. Even with general education classes, there are some super interesting options that can provide the impetus for you to change your major!

    Dorm Life

Loved the dorms! Met my current apartment-mates and some friends that I will have for life. The rooms aren't the best quality, but I got to meet some amazing people!

    Food and Dining

From Carson's dinner, which is so incredibly good, to the burritos at Big Mouth Burrito, to the salad's and sandwiches at LLC, I couldn't have imagined better dorm food. I actually was surprised that college dorm food would be this tasty! Plus, if you end up getting bored of the food, just go to Grab N Go, a market where you can use points.

    What to do for fun

Anything and everything! Hiking, snowboarding, skiing, swimming, biking, weekend trips to Portland, house parties, fraternity parties, University of Oregon has a place and an activity for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It never rains at Autzen stadium!
Must go to a football game, so many chants and hand signs that you have to learn!

Great for these types of students

Great for laid back students who don't need to be in a big city environment. I love the U of O because I can actually study without being distracted by the attractions of a big city. But I can still go to a big city easily, and there is always something to do so you're never bored.

    Clubs and Activities

UO Outdoor Program is a must for adventurers!
Also, there are multicultural clubs for every type of person.
The UO also keeps students very updated about activities and events through emails, Facebook and fliers.

    Greek Life

Do it or don't, either way you'll have a blast! What's nice about Greek life at UO is that it's not mandatory. If that's you're style, then Greek life will be awesome! If you're not into the sorority or fraternity life, you won't be risking not having a social life.

    Campus Safety

You can get a ride home from parties, or even from the library, through the free Designated Driver Shuttle (DDS) or the Assault Prevention Shuttle (APS) any day of the week, it's so convenient! Also, there are emergency poles with buttons that you can press around campus that you can press if you feel you are in danger. However, I have never felt scared or in danger around campus. There are always people around no matter what time of day so you're never alone or scared.

I am very satisfied with the University of Oregon. The teachers and students are all great people with an abundance of knowledge. The weather is very different from what I'm used to, but it is worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

There is a lot of choices for food, but you get over them quickly.
Make sure you have a rain jacket, umbrella, and rain boots!

    Academic Rigor

The classes are difficult, just like I would expect any college class to be.

    Dorm Life

I live in Carson, which I believe is the best dorm. We have a tight community and everyone can be trusted. The rooms are spacious, there is food downstairs, the showers are big and warm, the only downside is the lack of closet space.

    Food and Dining

Carson dining is very convenient, but some of their food options aren't too appetizing. If you go in and don't see anything you like, there is a salad and yogurt bar that you can never go wrong with. There's also always dessert and fruit which are delicious. The salads and sandwiches at Dux Bistro are really good, but if you choose the same one too often you get over them. The chicken noodle soup and minestrone is really good, but they only offer each once a week. The pastries are amazing. Hamilton has an abundance of choices, and they are all very good! I have only been to Barnhart for three times because it is too far, not bad though.

    What to do for fun

I like to go to parties, go to the movies, go to the mall, and just hangout in the dorms with friends.

    Bang for the buck

It is very expensive, especially out of state, but I am extremely happy I chose to go to Oregon.

    Greek Life

Greek life is not very big, only 10-11% of campus, but being in Greek Life, I feel like it is pretty big and definitely expanding.

    Campus Safety

Campus is very safe. There are alerts that notify you of bad things that happen on or near campus. There are light-up blue buttons around campus that you can press to call the police, and campus is very lit up at night. It is extremely safe during the day.

Eugene has a laid back atmosphere and a friendly student body. Being a big university, you sort of get to choose your education. You can either slack-off or get tutors and really pursue your education here.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't slack off your freshman year. Make sure you get all your prerequisites out of the way early in your college career. Use you time wisely, meaning don't take classes that don't satisfy any requirements.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on what kind of student you are. You can either sail your way through school without really trying, however there are classes and resources for more academically inclined students. Any type of student can go here and succeed.

    Dorm Life

It depends on what dorm you get in, but it is worth it just for the experience. My hall is very tight-knit and we all love either other, but I have friends in other dorms that hate their neighbors and roommates. It just depends on where you live and who you live with.

    Food and Dining

It's good for the first term and a half, and then it gets old.... fast. There are a lot of options and places to eat, but since you eat at those places every single day, you get really tired of it about half way through winter term. I would suggest some non-dorm food snacks in your room.

    What to do for fun

The night life is good at Oregon, minus winter term. Fall and Spring call for frisbee, football, soccer, suntanning, and just hanging out on the grass with friends and fellow students.

    Bang for the buck

I am an in-state resident, and Oregon is so over-priced. The bookstore sells overpriced books (I would suggest renting books off bookrenter.com) and tuition for first-year students is high.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I love studying at the Law Library, even though I'm not a law student. Another good place on campus when the weather is nice is behind/between Pacific and Willamette Hall. There is a nice calm area with rock waterfalls, very nice for those that need an escape. The inside of the Willamette building is also a calm, quiet place to study.

Great for these types of students

UO is great for frat boys who love football and hanging out with friends. It is also good for those who are interested in journalism or architecture.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of intramural sports which many students participate in. There are also many other academic based clubs on campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life at UO is big, but not nearly as big as some other universities. It is expensive for sororities, but frats are relatively cheap. Every sorority/fraternity is known for something... so watch out!

    Campus Safety

There are always campus crime alerts that are e-mailed to all the students, but I feel that UO is very safe for the most part. On weekends, there are always police patrolling the area, which gives a sense of safety, and there is also safe driver/designated driver service which is a free taxi service for students at night.

    Am learning a lot

Life at the University of Oregon is probably very similar to most other college campuses. Thousands of young, eager students with a yearning to learn something new about themselves and the world they live in. Guys on long boards, girls in leggings and rain boots, and about 600 bikes locked to one bike rack. But there are some major aspects of our campus that set's us apart from other schools.

    Pro's (In no particular order):
Very significant sports/athletics culture (There's a reason we are nick-named The University of Nike. His name is Phil Knight.)

The outdoor scene is huge. From hiking Spencer's Butte to the rockin' Outdoor Program, your inner nature explorer will be well fed.

Academics are top shelf. We have one of the best Journalism schools in the nation, as well as an incredible Business School. The Sports Marketing program is considered the best in the country.

The public transportation in Eugene is convenient and extremely accessible. You will have no trouble getting to and from class with such a fantastic bus system. No need to waste money on a parking pass (heck, you could leave your car at home).

Our football team is pretty good... and our sports complexes aren't to shabby either.

Eugene is centrally located. We are only a two hour drive from the major city of Portland, Oregon and about 90 minutes from the coast. There is always something to do, even if it isn't in Eugene.

It's beautiful here. All the rain produces a lot of green. The scenery here is hard to beat. The air is very clean as well.

We are a very bike friendly campus. Bring your bike, it is an invaluable piece of equipment here at UO.

We are a very diverse campus. You will meet people from almost every culture and from all walks of life. One of the biggest parts of the learning experience in college is the exposure of the different cultures of your peers.

    Con's (In no particular order):
It rains about nine months out of the year. As an Oregonian since birth, I have learned to live with it. For those who come from a sunnier state (e.g. California), there is definitely a transition period in getting used to all the precipitation.

Cost of living can be pretty high. Minimum wage in Oregon is pretty high, and the cost of living reflects that high wage. Save your money or take out an extra loan if you want to be able to afford rent and utilities.

On the subject of money, tuition is a bit steep. Especially for you prospective out-of-state students, you will be spending a pretty penny to get a top notch education. In my opinion, however, it is worth the money.

The university is growing in numbers every year, so space is limited. Class sizes will be large, especially in your first couple of years here, and registering can be a pain with such limited seats available. We are in the process of building a few new buildings so that may help with the crowd control.

The student ticket system for football and basketball games is terrible. Keep in mind that this is coming from a student who DIDN'T get a ticket to the most recent football game.

    Am enjoying being here

Very simply put, this has been the greatest experience of my life. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

    Bang for the buck

The only reason I wouldn't give it a five is because I know how expensive out-of-state tuition is. In state is affordable, but you might have to take a loan or two out. They say a good education is priceless.

    Tips for prospective students

Leave your car, bring your bike.

Invest in a high quality rain jacket. An umbrella wouldn't hurt either.

Leave any prejudices at home and come here with an open mind. You will change and grow as a person at the University of Oregon. The process will be much smoother if you don't resist it.

Great for these types of students

Literally everyone could find a place they fit into here at the University of Oregon. With a little effort on your end, you can feel like this place was made specifically for you. It's a pretty cool feeling.

    Did learn a lot

The teachers are devoted to drilling the material into your brain. As long as you are willing to learn and engage in class, you will learn :)! Most of the teachers, even with the bigger classes, have office hours. USE THOSE TIMES WISELY! When your schedule doesn't conflict with your professor, I STRONGLY suggest going to their office hours if you need help with something. They are there to help you! If not there, then ask your peers and start a study group. They're fun and productive-depending on the students you choose to be in the group. There are ways for all different types of learners to learn! Especially in an open-minded place such as University of Oregon.

    Did enjoy being here

In the beginning, I felt a little lonely and missed my support network from back home. Then, I opened up a little and was lucky enough to be placed in the dorm I was placed in! Everyone was super friendly. I ended up joining a form of government and made friends from there. The general Eugene ambience is like an open notebook waiting to be written in! Each path you choose is yours and yours only-your family and friends aren't there to share their input with you. Everyone is super friendly in Eugene and open-minded so I suggest if you are open-minded to things, then consider Eugene! There are all different types of people there and at first-like most freshmen- I feared I wouldnt' find the amazing people I met in high school, but I did! Like a vending machine, you get what you put into!

    Bang for the buck

For an out of state student with a small scholarship and loans-I'd say it was do-able. The rent in Oregon is way cheaper than that in CA and therefore so are the dorms. However, obviously out of state tuition was what brought me back home. I don't have the money for that. Ironic because now UC tuition is going to be exactly that price. But anyway, if i had that money, i'd certainly return!

    Tips for prospective students

Join clubs and organizations from the very beginning. Try to find a dorm hall that fits your personality or one that's quiet enough to concentrate and study in. TRUST me- you think you want to have fun twenty four seven in college (even in your dorms) and you DO but you are going to need a break from all that noise and some quiet down time!!! I got placed in the Substance Free Hall unwillingly. However, it ended up being mostly great!Obviously people are still going to drink there and what not-but it was a safe hall where no one judged you if you did or didn't decide to get loose.

Great for these types of students

Open-minded, friendly, outgoing, energetic, spirited, and yet simultaneously-chill. Basically anyone-you willl find your niche there! Anyone with a passion for business, psychology, journalism it has the top programs for those majors. Be aware however of the strong weed smokin' culture. Most colleges have a high concentration of marijuana users but this one especially! If you aren't comfortable with that or walking down your hallway sometimes with that smell-I'd re-consider. However, there are still people that don't smoke (if you really mind that much) and people of all kinds that you can befriend. You just have to join things to find them and be placed in the right hall.

    Will learn a lot

There are tons of majors to choose from in every category. It's one of the only schools that offers a BA in Photography near me!

    Will enjoy being here

It's a really nice environment and it's full of interesting people!

    Bang for the buck

The price is reasonable and many scholarships are available.

    Tips for prospective students
