Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors are great, but in order to take advantage of all they have to offer, you have to GO to class!! Also, create a relationship with them - it may come in handy for research or internship opportunities.
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do... apart from Oakland, the museums, and many parks, you are only a short bus ride away from downtown Pittsburgh, the Southside, the Waterfront, Squirrel Hill and the North Shore.
Bang for the buck Apart from being able to ride the bus for free (which is awesome), the dorms are very nice in comparison to other colleges'. There are also a lot of options for food, even while staying within your dining plan. You can get free computer software to use too, and there are labs where you can print up to 900 sheets a semester... although I doubt anyone ever has. There are also state of the art gyms and work out centers that are open to everyone.
Tips for prospective students While living in an exciting area definitely has its perks, the most important thing to remember is that you are there to go to school, and that if you don't focus on your classes, you might not be there much longer! Sure, parties are fun, but make sure you create a balance in your life of work and play. It's important to meet new people too, and to go out into the city to see what it has to offer. Keeping this in mind - be safe! While the campus is extremely safe, don't be stupid! You are still living in an urban area, so use common sense.
Great for these types of students Anyone who likes a big school, exciting place to live and different types of people. If you like sports, Pitt is a great place to be! If that's not your thing, there are so many other activities you can be involved with, so don't worry!

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here The perfect balance of city life and safety for a college student. Less action than other big cities, especially with concerts.
Tips for prospective students My freshman year was one of the most rewarding and trying years of my life. I was lucky enough to join a learning community my first semester and got to know a group of students very well. The diversity of the student and city population is the best part of Pitt and it is reflected in its student group offerings. There is something/someone for EVERYONE if you look for it. The free bus pass with your Pitt ID was the best perk of being a student, however, you have to stay on top of your work. If you let your coursework slip by, you will not be able to catch up. Pitt is the most academic challenging and rewarding state school but I can honestly say I learned more in my first year at the University of Pittsburgh than I have before in my life. My biggest tip is EXPLORE!!! Opportunities, social settings, class selections and the city! You will be better for it.
Great for these types of students Curious, organized, self-starting, adventurous, science-oriented, anyone with a desire to learn and experience new things!!

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students PLEASE keep on the right track -- college is a whole different world from being back home in high school. There's so much time for friends, and also make time for studying. The University of Pittsburgh was an INCREDIBLE choice for me and I guarantee that this place will make anyone feel at home. Great people, great professors, and a challenge everywhere.
Great for these types of students Hard-working, intellectual, innovative, social, friendly, studious, spontaneous.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors at the University of Pittsburgh will challenge your thinking in ways you didn't know possible, but if you show you want to learn, they will help you succeed. You also will learn in-depth details from professors who love the subject that they are teaching.
Am enjoying being here Pittsburgh is one of the biggest little cities in the world. Oakland has a variety of shops and restaurants, and the city transit can take you to various destinations around Pittsburgh for free with your student ID. Also, Pitt Football tickets are cheap, and the school provides transportation to Heinz Field. And the legendary Pitt basketball team plays at the Peterson Events Center, which is 10 minutes from most dorms. There's always something to do at Pitt.
Bang for the buck Pitt, though expensive, offers an incredible experience to those who make the most of it. The professors at Pitt are top notch, incredible researchers who can enrich typical classes with cutting edge findings from their own research. The dorms are of above average quality, and the food is better than most college fare. Overall, Pitt is worth every penny.
Tips for prospective students Apply early, and check out the guaranteed grad school section of the application page. You can get guaranteed admission to the medical, law, and pharmacy schools, if you qualify.
Great for these types of students Pitt is perfect for any major, but really shines through in the sciences. If you want to do anything in the medical field, Pitt offers a great Pre-Med curriculum, in addition to having 2 hospitals close by, which are affiliated with Pitt. Pitt also boasts strong social work and teaching programs.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Here at Pitt I feel as if I'm apart of the classroom. Sure, huge lectures can be informal and boring but most of the teachers I had were helpful after class to explain any problems I had. There are also many options to help you if you are struggling in any subject such as the Academic centers to help with tough subjects such as biology, chemistry, calculus, physics, etc.
Am enjoying being here I love it here. You do have your parties, but the university and student groups host various activities such as movie nights, trips, and other things. There are also many different groups you could join that participate in interesting events. For instance, Pitt Make a Difference Day was a school-wide community service project that helped the city out with cleaning and other things. It was very worthwhile.
Bang for the buck While this is an expensive public university for in-state students and even out-of-state students I think this is a great investment.
Tips for prospective students Come visit this university, it wasn't even on my radar for prospective schools until I visited and fell in love.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot It is never easy transitioning from high school to college, but at Pitt it was fun. The classes so are much more diverse and interesting, and all of my professors challenged me, something I didn't experience too much in high school. It was great being able to fill general requirements with classes that genuinely interested me, because Pitt has a great selection of courses.
Am enjoying being here One thing I've noticed about Pitt is that its well-rounded. Aside from being academically competitive, it has a great sports program, a lot of clubs, and a good social atmosphere, so there is something for everyone. I also really like the neighborhood, Oakland, which has great restaurants and shops.
Bang for the buck Pitt is a good deal for Pennsylvania residents, but could be pricey for out of state students if you don't receive a scholarship (but they do give out a good amount of aid). Still, its a better deal than most private schools.
Tips for prospective students Coming into freshman year, I joined a learning community, which is a group of twenty or so students that generally take 3 themed classes together and meet once a week for discussions. I'd highly suggest joining one- there are a few dozen that cover most majors and are a great way to meet people as a freshman.
Great for these types of students If you are a big sports fan, you'll love Pitt. If you're an above average student that could use a good scholarship, you're likely to get a good deal for a quality education here. If you want an urban campus that isn't in the middle of downtown, you'll like Pitt's location.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My favorite thing about Pitt is that you don't just learn in the classroom. I've gained more life experience here in the last year and a half than I have my entire life. The professors are hit or miss at times, but the you will always take something away from each class. I'd recommend it to anyone. I've even convinced my sister to attend.
Am enjoying being here I lived in the Litchfield Towers my freshman year. Honestly, they aren't terrible. Sometimes they were loud, and I wasn't friends with a lot of people on my floor, but being in the center of campus made it easy to meet new people every day until I found my core group of friends. That, and Market Central is right beneath it, so you can go to dinner in your pj's! I live off-campus now and I enjoy it even more. There's so much to do in South Oakland!
Bang for the buck This school is a bit pricey, especially considering there are cheaper schools who can offer you just as valuable degrees. The reasons it's worth the money go on. Personally, the experience, the chance to go to all of the fabulous museums, playhouses, and clubs, the opportunity to take any class at the surrounding colleges, and the free city bus fare (love!) make it worth my money.
Tips for prospective students My biggest tip is to not stress about getting into the honors college. I was really disappointed when the only thing keeping me out was 100 points on my SAT. Honestly, yes the dorm is nice, but you will still have a great experience, a great degree from a prestigious school, and tons of friends when you leave.
Great for these types of students Psychology (my major), biological sciences, engineering, are all known to be great at Pitt, but I also recommend the business school based on friend and personal reviews.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors who teach at Pitt are some of the most wonderful, helpful, and amazing people I have met so far. They genuinely care about their students and their well-being. Not only do they teach the material for class, but they are always open to helping students learn outside of the classroom. The OCC (Outside the Classroom Curriculum) program at Pitt is a unique way to learn valuable life skills while also working towards a degree.
Am enjoying being here I definitely love being at Pitt! The city offers so many interesting opportunities for people of all types. There is ALWAYS something fun happening on and off campus, and it's never hard to look for (no matter what you're interested in).
Everyone I've met so far has been extremely welcoming and open to meeting new friends, so it's never hard to find people to have a good time with.Bang for the buck The Pitt experience is priceless. The area is a perfect balance between the rush of the city and the warmth of a small community. I've never felt limited to only a few options, because there are so many different things that Pitt can offer: sports teams, undergraduate research, safe city life, and great food are just a couple of the benefits. Also, Pittsburgh in general is a college town, so you always have the opportunity to meet students from other schools; we also have an affiliation with Carnegie Mellon, so students can cross-register for classes there or even work with professors/other students. It's definitely worth the number on the price tag.
Tips for prospective students Make a visit so you can get your own feel of the campus to see if it's right for you. Always be open to trying out something new, because you never know where it can take you. Don't get tied down by the way you think college is supposed to be- college is what you make of it. And one more thing: Don't be afraid to meet new people.
Great for these types of students Anyone who enjoys the city (and even if you're a rural/suburban kind of person, I firmly believe Pitt has something for everyone); sports fan; science major or pre-med (Pitt can offer solid programs for any major, but it's exceptionally strong is the science and medical fields); adventurous (There's always somewhere to explore!)

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Settled in the middle of Pittsburgh, students learn in one of the best, most interesting, and understated cities in the country. Pitt has it all with beautiful academic buildings, an abundance of interesting classes, and sports teams unifying the student body. Pitt is a wonderful school, which educates its students both inside and outside the classroom.
Tips for prospective students Pitt has something for everyone. You'll love filling your core classes with Pitt's many selections because there's something for everyone. The club fair takes over the Petersen Events center with all of its options and there's always fun things to do in Pittsburgh, on or off campus.
Academic Rigor Pitt offers many resources to assist students with classes. Professors there teach exceptionally well, but for that last extra push, a student can go to several resource centers for free tutoring. The professors themselves are also always willing to help.
Dorm Life Freshman dorms are livable, located near popular academic buildings, and assist in creating friendships in that first year of college. Upperclassmen apartments and dorms are beautiful. The suites are extremely new and are a great opportunity for a group of friends to live together.
Food and Dining Once again, Pitt has a ton of dining choices. On and off campus, students can find delicious food. In particular, Pittsburgh itself has some of the greatest burgers I've ever tasted and its extremely affordable.
What to do for fun On campus, Pitt Program Council always has something going on. Cobra Starship just performed this spring, completely free for students! In the city, everything is college budget friendly. In particular, the Pittsburgh Penguins offer $25 student rush tickets to their games that are just a bus ride away. Conveniently, students can use all of the buses in the city for absolutely nothing at all.
Bang for the buck Pitt is extremely affordable. Out of state tuition is just under $24,000 and these days, that's groundbreaking. For that money, students get an outstanding education, fantastic sports teams to support, an abundance of clubs, and many resources for career development, study abroad, and any place else their hearts could take them.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Pitt has a ton of traditions that unify the student body. During football games, Sweet Caroline plays and all of the students throw their arms around each other to sing Pitt's variation. We also have our own fight songs (remember to yell Alegenee Genac Genac Genac!) and phrases (Hail to Pitt). When visiting the campus, be sure to rub Roc the Panther's nose outside of the William Pitt Union for good luck!
Great for these types of students It's perfect for students who like big schools or urban schools. Also, students who want that unified feeling at a college would love it hear. In addition, Pitt has impeccable medical, science, and engineering programs, so anyone interested in those majors should definitely check it out.
Clubs and Activities Like mentioned previously, all of the clubs in school fill up the entirety of the Petersen Events Center for the club fair, but its completely navigable. There's a club (or several) for every niche! Whatever one's interested in, I guarantee Pitt has something relevant.
Greek Life Not everyone participates in Greek Life, but everyone who does absolutely loves it. In fact, I intend to rush next semester. It's a great opportunity to network, make life long friends, and get extremely involved on campus.
Campus Safety Recently, Pitt had a string of bomb threats and the campus police made students feel extremely safe. We have a lot of faith in our campus police, who have worked extremely hard to ensure our safety. While those threats are over now, students could not pick a safer place to study. There always seems to be a campus police presence, there are security guards in buildings, and if a student is stranded anywhere, Pitt will come pick her up!

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor Pitt is a great place to come and get a education, every class that you enroll in provides a chance to learn more than you ever thought about a specific subject. The diversity of classes available is phenomenal and you will find interesting classes in any subject your interested in. The professors for the most part are alright, but for science classes, they expect you to learn materials in a different, more detailed way. Overall, very happy with my choice
Am enjoying being here Not all of college is going to classes, everyone needs some down time and Pittsburgh is a amazing city to be in with the different boroughs available to visit. There are plenty of places to hang out with friends and definitely great parties.
Bang for the buck Pretty competitive price, even for an out-of-state student! Pitt cares about you and try to accommodate costs to make it as affordable as possible and the price is very on par with other public universities but Pitt offers phenomenal experiences in research and mentoring from renowned professionals in the field whether it is scientific lab research or humanities. Plus free public transportation to go anywhere in the city!
Tips for prospective students Apply early and definitely pay a visit. You will love the city campus and taking a tour will be a great way to explore a school that you will be attending for the next four years.
Great for these types of students Pitt makes every student realize their potential so whatever your major is, the school will have something for you. Personally, as a science major, Pitt offers guaranteed opportunities to perform research, even as freshman, and you will find something interesting if you look hard enough due to Pitt's great emphasis as a research institution

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although I only have one year of education from PITT under my belt, I have learned a great deal of information. I have taken classes in Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, History and Philosophy of Science, History, and Calculus in just one very exciting year. Classes can be challenging, but you learn a ton of information to make yourself a well rounded educated individual.
Am enjoying being here I love living on campus in Oakland! The streets are always alive with college students, and the campus is easy to navigate. The city of Pittsburgh is a wonderful place for college students to live. There is always something to do at PITT. RA's from around campus hold social gatherings on a weekly basis. The football and basketball games are one of the best experiences you could have with a crowd of cheering students that go crazy for their Panthers. And, if your not on campus the Waterfront, Southside, and Downtown have tons of shopping and great restaurants. I suggest dinner at Primanti's in Oakland or the Southside, then dessert at Razzy Fresh in Oakland. You'll love it!
Bang for the buck PITT is pretty pricey, then again what college isn't nowadays. However, the education and experience are worth every penny. You'll find yourself surrounded by other college students that have a passion for learning and making the most of life.
Tips for prospective students If Hillman Library, also known as club Hillman, is too noisy for you don't worry Pitt has almost a dozen libraries to choose from. I recommend Scaife (located inside the School of Medicine) by the Pete or the bottom of the School of Law. Also, try finding a good corner or empty classroom in the Cathedral of Learning. Other tips would be try to find a time to go to Market when it's not crazy packed and if your in towers always leave room to spare to catch an elevator. Lastly, it's our city, our panthers and HAIL TO PITT!
Great for these types of students The University of Pittsburgh is great for students who are prepared to work their tails off. You have to be self driven and deteremined to keep up with your competitive academic classmates. If you're the kind of person that loves adventure, grabbing life by the horns, and passionate with everything you do, then the Pitt and the city of Pittsburgh are perfect for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes are obviously much more difficult than those in high school. It is important to attend classes and make a relationship with your Professor. If they know your name it's surprising how much more effort you will put into their class! Go to their office hours and always feel free to seek help from teaching assistants. The one thing I've had trouble with is that many teachers here have strong accents. Then it is especially important that you make an effort to go to their office hours. It will help you understand them so much better!
Am enjoying being here This University has so much to offer! I love the campus location and the diversity of people who attend this campus. There is something for everyone and the activities available to students seem to be endless. Classes can be a lot of work but it is so worth being here.
Bang for the buck It's worth it if you are going to participate in activities that Pitt offers to students. Many things are included in your tuition and if you don't take advantage of these activities, then you are certainly paying too much.
Here are a few examples of what Pitt has to offer:
Students with a valid ID receive free admission to all museums in Pittsburgh and have the option of attending many free Arts encounters. Pitt brings in many big name performers like Kesha, B.O.B., and ABDC winners Poreotics and Super Crew. Your ID is your free bus pass, so get out and explore the city!Tips for prospective students Get involved in something on campus! There are so many clubs, groups, and organizations that there is literally something for everyone. It is a great way to stay active, meet new people with similar interests, and it looks great on your transcript.
Great for these types of students If you like city life then this is the place for you. Of course Pitt is something of a party school, but it is still possible to avoid that scene and find other exciting ways to go out and have fun.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The University of Pittsburgh has outstanding curriculum. They offer such a wide array of classes and types of professors that it is difficult to find a class you don't enjoy. The professors are extremely easy to work with, and offer as much outside help as possible. There are also many tutoring and writing assistance centers that will help you with virtually any problem you could face. And best of all --it's free!
Am enjoying being here Pitt has a wonderful atmosphere for students. They offer so many activities and clubs for you to be involved in and are always sponsoring some sort of free event for students to attend. They tend to have gatherings in lower campus for fundraisers or holidays, and its always fun for all who wish to participate. And there's usually free food!
Bang for the buck Pitt is most certainly not the cheapest school, but it definitely is not the most expensive either. I feel for the amount of money we pay each year, we definitely get what we pay for. There is so much offered to students who are willing to take advantage of it. I feel that if you are looking for a school with lots to do, and a decent price, this is absolutely the place to be.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Don't sit around in your dorm, wishing you were with your friends from back home. Go out and meet people. There are so many events held for incoming freshman to meet others, it's just plan silly to stay boarded in your room. Don't be afraid to come out of your shell a little. And definitely make sure Pitt is the right place for you. Do your research and make sure you've found exactly what you're looking for.
Great for these types of students Pitt is great for students who have awesome school spirit, love to be involved in your community, and who enjoy knowing that they are receiving an education that will be sure to allow them to succeed.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors are definitely challenging, but they have so much to offer! My biology class is tough however there are so many tools on campus to help you succeed. I am doing well because I make good use of their office hours and teaching assistants. Office hours are one-on-one meetings with your professors that are Q and A. If you do not understand something, go! They are so helpful- especially in large lectures. The teaching assistants are students that have previously taken the class and are there for help. They may teach recitations or schedule one-one-ones. They have free tutoring available in almost any subject at almost any given time. Not only do you learn a lot in the classroom, you learn alot about different cultures at the University of Pittsburgh. Having a city campus, I have the opportunity of witnessing new things everyday and learning about others. Pitt is a large university with a great number of opportunities for learning.
Am enjoying being here I am so unbelievably happy that I chose the University of Pittsburgh. Most classes are only a short walk away, the gym at the Peterson Event center is AMAZING, and football games are so fun. Whether singing Sweet Caroline or grilling some dogs before the game, football games are a way to get in touch with thousands of your peers and feel as one- even with the mascot Rocco. He is hilarious. There is a HUGE variety of choices for dining. When you buy a meal plan, you have dining dollars and dining passes. The passes are good at the dining halls. There is a dining hall in towers and also Sutherland that offers different items cooked daily. The dining dollars are for places such as Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A, Pizza Hut, a smoothie place, salads, sushi, yogurt, and more. I have not yet gotten tired of the food because there are SO many choices. The dorm rooms are, well, dorm rooms. I love my roommate- they do a great job of pairing you with someone who they think you will be interested in getting to know. Getting involved on campus is something else that has made me enjoy it so much. There are so many clubs and organizations always looking for people to get involved, not only will it look good on resumes, but I have met so many friends with similar interests this way. Because i am a pre-professional major, it is extremely advantageous having all of the medical centers near campus. All-in-all, Pitt was the perfect choice.
Bang for the buck Pitt is a pretty expensive school, but I would also say it is pretty prestigious. Pitt has a lot more to offer than a lot of other schools, and it is definitely an honor to say I attend here. Pitt's tuition DOES include bus transportation, student health services, and plenty of opportunities to snag a free shirt here and there. You are not only paying for the education but also the experience. College is expensive either way, so my as well take the best you can get!
Tips for prospective students If the money is there, go to Pitt. Just do it. It will open up so many doors. When you are at Pitt, get involved and do not be afraid to be yourself. At such a large school, you have the opportunity to meet so many different people with so many different interests. This is your time to explore and be selfish before you have to buckle down and get serious. Check out all the museums (you get in for free!), sample some of the great food (Joe Mama's has fabulous tiramisu!), and try to get a spot in the Oakland Zoo (the student section for basketball games..it is crazy!). If you think you don't have the money, you do. Get some loans and work your butt off, it is so worth it. I have had to work two jobs, and I don't regret it at all. I still have time for friends and clubs. Be ready to work hard and get a great education!
Great for these types of students Any type of student looking for the best experience they could possibly have!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pitt is a great school for people who are unsure of the path they wish to take, but know they want to continue their education. I was a student who came in undecided, but was able to discover a major I was passionated about after exploring Pitt's many options. Furthermore, Pitt offers an abundant of extra opportunities for its students, from study abroad to research fellowships at UPMC, which also help build your resume.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus before you apply. Usually, Pitt will waive the application fee if you take the tour of the campus with the Pitt Pathfinders and you can apply directly after you finish your tour. Also, tour the campus on your own and make sure you can handle the hills of Oakland. Do not be turned off by South Oakland either, there are nicer places for you to live when you move off-campus.
Academic Rigor Depending on the path you take, Pitt offers a number of classes that challenge its students, but also offers classes for students to take that are simply interesting. I took Asian Art my sophomore year, and included in our text book
Dorm Life If you get stuck in the older dorms, such as Holland or Brackenridge, be warned that there is no air conditioner. However, your RAs will welcome you into Pitt and help you break the ice with your new hall mates. You are guaranteed housing for your first 3 years, and the dorms do get better each year.
Food and Dining Pitt forces you to get a meal plan but I would recommend getting less swipes and more dining dollars. These dining dollars can be spent at local on-campus eateries such as Einstein Brothers, Sub Connection, and the coffee carts, which offer options you will likely tire less of then the dining hall called Market Central. The dining hall is not amazing, but it does offer a lot of options such as stir-fry, hamburgers, pasta and a sub bar.
What to do for fun There are tons of clubs to join at Pitt. During the beginning of the year, make sure you attend the Club Fair and see if any clubs interest you. Pitt has a Habitat for Humanity, sororities, fraternities, club sports, a snowboard club and tons of other clubs that meet and allow students to have fun. There is also Southside, which is only a short bus ride away that hosts a Forever21, Cheesecake Factory and movie theater.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Before games, it is tradition for students to go touch the Panther located next to the Pete Event's Center for good luck.
Great for these types of students Pitt is great for students who want to explore all their options, as well as desire a more urban setting. While not directly located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pitt is centrally located that it is easy to travel by bus downtown or to the neighboring communities.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs for students.
Campus Safety Pitt has its own police force that patrols the campus. Oakland is also mostly made up of students, so as long as you take the necessary precautions (don't walk by yourself at 2 am), it is a relatively safe campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I've recently completed my first semester here at Pitt, and there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that I am at the right school. Pitt offers the ideal combination of atmosphere, social life, and academics. If you like the feel of a big school, Pitt is definitely right for you.
Tips for prospective students A couple of things about Pitt:
Get your Application and FAFSA and everything done as soon as you can. Pitt offers merit scholarships, but they are quite limited in number. I didn't apply until right before the deadline, so most of the scholarship money was GONZO by the time my app went in.
If your school offers AP courses or something like college in high school, absolutely take advantage of it. My high school had a Dual Enrollment agreement with a local college where college credits were earned for getting A's in classes with college equivalents. Pitt accepted ALL of my credits (40+).
Academic Rigor I'm a Political Science & Philosophy major, so (apart from Psychology) I really can't speak as to the vigor of the natural science courses. However, their humanities courses are no more challenging than an average high school AP course.
Overall, Pitt has a decent reputation; but it has a few departments and programs which stand out:
Pitt has a phenomenal philosophy department - it has been ranked in the top 5 departments by several sources.
Pitt also has good medical programs, especially nursing and physical therapy.Dorm Life Dorm life is one of Pitt's weaker points. While its not awful, dorm life certainly isn't as good as you would probably find at a smaller private university.
First of all, it is very unlikely that you will get the housing you prefer. The university uses a lottery system to dole out the available dorms and apartments, and you rarely get what you want. Living in Towers is decent, because this is where most freshmen live (you will meet a sh*t ton of good people here). Sutherland is where the honors college dorms are (probably a little bit nicer than towers, but you are kind of isolated from everything on lower campus).Food and Dining OK. When it comes to meal plans, don't make the mistake that the majority of freshmen make. Many people get the unlimited meal plans. I advise against this. This is way more food than you can eat, trust me. I originally had this meal plan, but I realized that it is really a rip off.
There are two ways of paying for food on campus: dining passes (swipes) and dining dollars. Dining passes get you into Market Central or The Perch (these are the two main dining facilities). One swipe gets you all you can eat of a variety of foods: Pizza, sandwiches, soups, stir fry, salads, pasta, burgers, fries, grilled cheese, ethnic foods, etc. Now, these all you can eat buffets will be like a dream come true at first, but after three weeks or so.. you will become unbelievably tired of this food. Which is why I encourage you to go with the second option instead.
Dining dollars are much more flexible than dining passes. Dining dollars can be used at the variety of other places to eat on campus: Taco Bell, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Pizza Hut, Einstien Bros. Bagels, Schenley Cafe (this has a bunch of good stuff.. even Sushi!) and Quik-Zone (this is a university operated convenience store type thing..it has things to microwave in your room, sandwiches, F'real milkshakes, sodas, candy, etc.)
Dining dollars are way more enticing, but they can slip away from you. I would recommend figuring out how many dining dollars you want to spend per week and abide by that allowance. What to do for fun There are a bunch of good museums to go to (personally the Andy Warhol is my favorite). There are plenty of exercise facilities on campus. There are also a plethora of good restaurants in Oakland. I'd recommend Joe Mama's (good Italian food). As for movies, South Side Works Cinema is just a few bus stops away, and it has student discounts (tickets are unbelievably cheap on weeknights.)
Great for these types of students Philosophy students, nursing students, engineers, international relations.
Greek Life The frats are decent. As most freshmen will do, go to the frats to party for the first few months (if you're into that sort of thing). But after a while, most people outgrow frat parties and recognize that house parties are where its at.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Certainly, the number-one benefit of my two years at Pitt has been the amount of knowledge that I've gained. I came in as a Philosophy major and learned so much about the department and curriculum so quickly that I decided it wasn't right for me. I have since switched to the honors Politics, Philosophy, and Economics major and have been so inspired by the courses honestly, especially in the Political Science Department. The Intro courses are fantastic as well, and they cover the given subject matter in general, so you can see if it is right for you. I have enjoyed my courses thus far.
Am enjoying being here I have really learned to love living in Pittsburgh. My freshman year was a bit socially intimidating but as the semesters go on you find yourself in various and new parts of town; each with quite a bit to experience. It to me a while to get a feel for the city, but Pittsburgh has a great and traditional style to it that I highly recommend. Though it can be bleak at times, Oakland is generally lively and invigorating. Pitt's campus is not distinguishable, but I now certainly feel at home here.
Bang for the buck My Pitt experience has been wonderful, and certainly worth the time. Financially however, there is no denying that it is a burden. I see this as a reflection of inflated collegiate costs around the country rather than a reflection of Pitt having an overbearing price tag however. Compared to other colleges, I definitely recommend Pitt for financial reasons! This is especially true for in-state students. In regards to out-of-state prospects, I can not say. Overall, the school is at least worthy of financial consideration. If it fits in to your family's budget, I recommend it.
Tips for prospective students Shadow the school! The most important part of deciding whether or not you will like Pitt specifically is the experience of the atmosphere. The campus and city have a very distinct feel to them; some hate it, and others love it. Pitt looks great on paper, and it's numbers and achievements don't lie, but it has a distinct style. Whether that is good or bad is up to you.
Great for these types of students Pitt is great for students who would enjoy an active and lively college experience and can see themselves in an urban campus. It is also great for athletic individuals, as well as those who are academically self-motivated. The school prepares you very well to live and thrive on your own. It should be noted that I could not imagine myself living in a city while I was applying, yet now I love it. Pitt has a great style; feel it out!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The campus is beautiful and inviting. Classes are challenging, but provide a wide knowledge base, which is helpful in furthering your education. There are many acclaimed programs to choose from.
Tips for prospective students Visit campus - you will know immediately if this is the right place for you.
What to do for fun Once you are of legal age, there are many bars nearby that students enjoy. Until then, there are often activities in the student union or somewhere else on campus, especially during football and basketball seasons.
Bang for the buck It's not cheap, there's no denying that, but it is certainly worth every penny.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Cathedral of Learning is an incredible structure. Outside of the student union, there is a panther statue that everyone rubs the nose of for luck on football days.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I live in Pittsburgh so I have been around the University of Pittsburgh pretty much my whole life and I've found that it is a wonderful school with tons of opportunities. Although I am not a fan of the campus, there is a lot to do in Oakland and the academics are out of this world! Each time I have visited I've learned something new about the school that makes me excited for the semester to start
Tips for prospective students Make sure you walk around the campus and check out the area, not just the school. Also walk from the dorms to different classrooms to see how far you have to walk. this could be a big deciding factor in where you want to dorm.
Academic Rigor Although I have not been to classes here yet, everything I've seen and heard have pointed to very rigorous and engaging academic structure. I can't wait to get started
Dorm Life I really can't say anything about this because I haven't started here yet, but from what I seen and heard from people the dorms are pretty exciting! With such a big school, you will always find people you like and can hang out with!
Food and Dining The Food seems pretty good and there are a ton of places on campus to eat. There's something to satisfy everyone!
What to do for fun The museums and Phipps Conservatory are free for Pitt students. Schenley Park is also a good place for walk or run on a nice day or for some alone time. There are also tons of international food restaurants in the area and most offer discounts to students!
Bang for the buck As compared to private schools, Pitt is relatively cheap and I personally think that with all the school has to offer the tuition is worthwhile
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Make sure you check out the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning! These are classrooms decorated in the style of different cultures. They are really fascinating and worth checking out!
Great for these types of students Honestly Pitt has something for any type of student!
Clubs and Activities Pitt has hundreds of clubs and activities all offering something for every type of person! Whether you want to get involved in theater, sports, service, or highlight your academics, there is a club for you!
Campus Safety Pitt has their own police force which works very hard to keep campus safe. Although the campus is quite safe, you have to remember that is still a city and you have to be careful at night especially if you are alone.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Almost all students who go to Pitt love it. There is a program for everybody and so much to do. Pitt really cares about their students and will not only give you a great education but also great life experiences.
Tips for prospective students Practice good study skills i.e. don't wait until a day before to study, get motivated to do work as soon as possible. Be safe and smart when going out at night.
Academic Rigor It depends what classes you take. Science classes are very rigorous.
Dorm Life Pitt has great residence halls and RAs who are there to help you. Someone comes and cleans every day and you will meet lots of great people.
Food and Dining Pretty decent variety but Market gets boring after eating it all year.
What to do for fun Go downtown, go to frats or bars, see shows/movies, free museum visits, play sports, hang out with friends etc.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When it is hot out tons of people lay out on Soldiers and Sailors lawn so bring a bathing suit for when the weather is nice!
Great for these types of students All types! There is something for everyone.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I truly believe I have learned more in my few years at pitt than I have durring my entire student career before college. The professors are very knowlegable in whatever they teach. I have had very few experiences where I belived the professor was not capable of teaching me something I did not know before I took the class.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying being here. I have made lots of friends and gotten involved in organizations that i care deeply about. I am even taking an extra year at school because I am not ready to leave.
Bang for the buck I think you get a quality education, but I do think it is very expensive and you could get the same education for a cheaper price.
Tips for prospective students Use rate my professor dilligently. Also the school wants you to do well. There is free tutoring offered for almost all classes and many professors make themselves available for office hours and questions after class. try not to get lost in the material. Ask questions when you have them. Do not be afraid to take the extra steps to turn a B into an A. Its worth it in the long run.
Great for these types of students For those majoring in sciences be careful about your schedule. It is not smart to take 2 sciences with lab when you have 18 credits. Be realistic about what you can/ cannot do. make your schedule work for you, do not work for your schedule. And know that what you learn and the grade you earn may not parallel each other.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot I was on the fence about my career path while I was a student at Pitt, and even still I learned a great deal. But you need to go to class and have the initiative to work. It's a large university, so teachers aren't going to hold your hand, or sometimes they won't even know who you are because class sizes are massive at times (my intro to psychology class had 400 people in it). This doesn't mean you don't learn. But you won't learn if you don't go to class. While it is a great place to be, a city with a lot to do, remember you're there to study.
Did enjoy being here For personal reasons relating to changing my career choices, Pittsburgh ended up not being my type of community, which is why I transferred. However, I loved the people, the Panther pride, and the student life. It was a great place to be and I do miss it. If you enjoy people, you'll enjoy Pittsburgh.
Tips for prospective students Social life is good and there is a lot to do. But remember to focus on school. ALSO, you get free rides on Port Authority with your ID to go around the city. I advise you ASK THE BUS DRIVERS where they are going. Sometimes they can be mean-looking and actually just plain mean, but I ended up on the east side of Pittsburgh one afternoon by my self when I was just trying to get back to campus. Be very careful. It helps to travel with someone as much as possible.
Great for these types of students Sociable, Driven, Hard-working

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm learning a lot here and all the professors are readily available when you need some help on the side. Most of my classes have from 20-30 people so they're great for individual attention.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere at Pitt is so welcoming. You're not forced to do things, but it's encouraged which is good for an introvert like me! There are so many students here that you are almost guaranteed to find fantastic friends within weeks. I'm so glad that I came here and I couldn't see myself anywhere else.
Bang for the buck Tuition can be a lot of money, but thankfully they do have a good deal of help with some of the cost. Upperclassmen say consistently that off-campus housing is cheaper, but the dorms are so much fun.
Tips for prospective students -Don't be afraid to contact professors via email or office hours- but be professional.
-Try to put yourself out there- there are so many clubs for every type of person!
-Library is good for studying- don't stay cooped up in a dorm all day.
-Explore the city with friends! Pittsburgh is fantastic and we get free public transit!Great for these types of students ANYONE.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I would give this a 5 star but some classes are just plain boring. Not everyone is going to excel at every class they take. I am personally interested in Poltical Science, when I goto those classes I pay attention and learn alot. Then, there are classes that I would prefer to never take but have to take them to fill a general education requirement. I am learning a lot about the stuff I am interested in, but not so much about anything else.
Am enjoying being here Pittsburgh has the nickname Shittsburgh because it can be shitty. The winters here are terrible. They are depressing. In the fall I LOVE being at Pitt. I am in the marching band, it is so much fun. I have a lot of good friends here and have met so many interesting people from all over the world. The spring is beautiful. After a long shitty winter it is nice to be able to sit in the grass in front of Soldiers and Sailors.
Bang for the buck Although my dad wants me to transfer to a state school for the cheapness I think Pitt is worth it's price. I feel I am receiving a fine education for a medium price. The only thing that is not worth the money is the Arts & Sciences advising center for students who haven't declared yet. The advisors don't care about the students. There are too many students at this school. Pitt has everything a person could want when they picture college life: big name athletics, greek life, opportunity for research, and a diverse population.
Tips for prospective students Declare your major RIGHT AWAY if you know what you want to do. You will receive a better advisor who will make sure you don't enroll in classes you don't need.
Great for these types of students If you are looking to live in a city, go to athletic events, be involved in on campus organizations, and want to feel like you are part of something bigger than yourself, go to Pitt.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot In my big classes, such as Chem, and Neuro, I am learning a ton! The courses are challenging and definitely paying off. However, in classes like my Freshman seminar, we don't do much of anything. I hear that other professors do a lot more than mind has, so it's possible I've just been unlucky.
Am enjoying being here I love it here! Everyone has been so friendly, and all of your professors just want you to succeed. Most professors are really approachable. Also, it is super easy to make friends here!
Bang for the buck Housing here is wonderful. I currently live in an all girls dorm, Holland. The bathrooms are cleaned daily, and my room size is wonderful. Also the actual buildings are all beautiful, and the Peterson Events Center has an amazing workout facility. There is a great variety of classes to choose from as well.
Tips for prospective students Tips I have for prospective students are: apply early. Don't be afraid to be outgoing. Also, if you're not up for the cold, maybe Pittsburgh isn't a good idea for you. There's a lot of walking to be done between classes, even in the winter.
Great for these types of students I feel like Pitt is good for almost any type of student. Theres a largely diverse crowd here! Even language difficulties are overcome in one way or another.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences as a nontraditional student i have received great support and advice in all aspects of my beginning college experience.
Tips for prospective students if you are a nontraditional student, older, returning, vet, etc., the college of general studies is an excellent place to begin.
Academic Rigor in my class so far i feel changed; they have not been a waste of time that would annoy me greatly.
What to do for fun the urban setting is great. pittsburgh offers many, reasonably priced cutrual, sporting events, and cultural institutions. there is lots of local music to enjoy at cafes and clubs. great parks and biking / hiking trails near by campus. your pitt id is a transit pass anywhere in allegheny county . . . nothing like a evening baseball game at pnc park (cheap) or student rush tickets to the pens at consol energy center.
Bang for the buck a quality education in a great city, engaged academic and research staff, excellent assistance such as the writing center.
Campus Safety there have been recent events that have been handled quickly and well by emergency services. call boxes are place closely all over campus and the busy urban setting with the all night activity from the near by large hospitals offer protection as well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pitt is phenomenal! It offers the best of both worlds; it has a small school feel with many advantages of a larger school, including athletics, academic resources, and activities. While it is part of a large city, Oakland, where the main campus is actually located, is secluded enough that it is like its own college oasis.
Tips for prospective students Meet as many people as you can, even if it is just to have a resource for notes in an early morning class that you always sleep through. You never know who will turn out to be your greatest friends and closest accomplices for your adventures throughout your time in college.
Academic Rigor Pitt has a great reputation for academics, specifically when it comes to opportunities in research. Most of the staff is fantastic too; always willing to take extra time to help you with anything, whether it is concerning one of their classes or not, you just have to seek them out.
Dorm Life I had a wonderful experience in the dorms. I had a single room in one of the buildings in the middle of campus. While I originally hated the idea of having a single, I came to love it. I never had to worry about pleasing another person or worrying about their schedule, and my entire floor ended up becoming my roommates. We were always out sitting in the halls and in each others rooms talking and hanging out. It was great!
Food and Dining The dining options leave much to be desired. They have a wide variety of offerings including, Chick-fil-a, Taco Bell, and Einstein's; however the food lacks nutrition and taste. I would be hard pressed to be able to tell you a place where you could find grilled chicken or fresh fruit using your meal plan.
What to do for fun A great thing about being part of the city of Pittsburgh is all the opportunities it provides. You can go to the Waterfront to see movies, the Strip District to shop, or down to the North Shore to see some amazing concerts. With your Pitt ID public transportation is free, so it is relatively easy to get to other parts of the city. Your ID can also provide you free or discounted entrance to many of the museums and performances around town. Of course, like most other schools, there are also plenty of opportunities to party, whether it is up at the frats or just in your friend's dorm room.
Bang for the buck While Pitt is a little pricey for a state school, it is worth every penny. The school provides you with so much in many different areas during your college career and beyond.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Two words: Sweet Caroline. Say this to just about any Pitt student and they will begin to belt out the Neil Diamond song of the same title, of course adding in Let's Go Pitt! Sung after the third quarter of every football game, it is a Pitt tradition that is enjoyed by all. When thinking of Pitt, the Cathedral of Learning is also something that usually comes to mind. Standing high above the campus, the Cathedral, thought to resemble Hogwarts, is an icon to the university. There are countless other unique aspects of Pitt, including The Oakland Zoo and Schenley Plaza.
Great for these types of students Pitt is great for any student who is willing to work and strives to succeed. The student body is awesome. There is a wide variety of people from all different backgrounds, but one thing we all have in common aside from our love of partying, is our love of learning. A Pitt student is someone who loves learning for learning's sake.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs and activities at Pitt. Just about anything you could be interested in, there will be a club for, and if there isn't, you can create one. There are many athletic opportunities as well, even if your not a pro you can still be involved in club or intramural sports. I recommend going to the activities fair at the being of the school year.
Greek Life Greeks can be seen around campus donning their letters, but they are not a huge part of the school.
Campus Safety You may have heard about the recent string of bomb threats at Pitt, and this may cause you some concern about campus safety; however, I do not see this as a concern. I stayed on campus the entire time the threats were occurring and never once did I fear for my life. The Pitt police as well as local police, and even the FBI did a wonderful job of maintaining a presence on campus and following safety procedures. I have never had a reason to fear anything else in regards to my safety. As long as you use your basic skills when it comes to any concerning scenario, you will be just fine.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pitt is such a big school that there's something for everyone here. Sure, it's known as a party school (and people certainly aren't kidding when they say that, with parties just about every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night), but no matter who you are, there are a lot of other students just like you. The academics, extracurriculars, and other opportunities are pretty good too.
Tips for prospective students Go to orientation and all of the other introductory programs.
Campus Safety I'm pretty sure this is as good as it gets.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pitt is a fun school with tons of great majors, opportunities, and activities to do. You will never be bored (well, except maybe in the harsh winter) with all of the free on campus and off campus attractions.
Tips for prospective students Buy a good winter coat and boots. Even the mildest Pittsburgh winters are still very cold and it can get pretty slippery on all the hills.
Academic Rigor Really depends on your program. I know Pitt's nursing, engineering, and pre-med programs are very difficult, but I haven't heard much about the others.
Dorm Life I had a great dorm experience, but apparently, in my dorm, that was rare. Generally seems like a good environment though.
Food and Dining There are a few good options, but if you don't want to get sick of them too soon, begin to venture off campus.
What to do for fun There are tons of free museums, cheap football and basketball games, free events held by the program council and clubs, and parties every weekend otherwise.
Great for these types of students Those looking to get into Greek Life mostly, but accepting of all types.
Clubs and Activities Something like four hundred different clubs of all sorts.
Greek Life Pretty noticeable. There is always a Greek party to attend, but if you don't want to be involved, you don't have to.
Campus Safety I've personally never had any issues with campus safety, but I've heard of robberies of off campus housing. This is, of course, ignoring all the bomb threats of last semester, which amounted to nothing except a huge inconvenience for many people.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Pittsburgh offers a great education to all its students. The faculty is attentive and wants to see all the students succeed. The University is also a pioneer in research, and students who are particularly interested in the sciences should look to enroll.
Tips for prospective students All prospective students should acknowledge that college is much different than most high schools, as far as work load and hardness. Remember to complete all assignments on time with full effort and study well for exams.
Academic Rigor The level of education is exceptional in the School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, so the competition is high among students. The professors will challenge the students in an integrated curriculum.
Dorm Life I had the chance to experience the pleasures of a Living Learning Community (LLC) where I resided with about 250 other Engineering students. The facilities are nice and highly available.
Food and Dining There are two main dining halls that offer a variety of food options. The campus also has numerous on-campus dining options which include Taco Bell Express, Burger King, Chick Fil-A, Einstein Bros., Pizza Hut Express, etc.
What to do for fun The city of Pittsburgh and the campus itself have a lot of things to do for fun. Anyone can go watch a Pirates baseball game or a Steelers football game during the seasons. Concerts come and go on a monthly basis, with many other promotions at Consol Energy Center where the Pittsburgh Penguins play. Touring South Side is lively at night and the Waterfront is a sight to see around the downtown area.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I love the small-town feel of Oakland. Pittsburgh is such a big city, but being on the campus is like being in your own little town. Coming from Austin where the University of Texas takes up the entire city, it is nice knowing I will be able to find my way around easily.
Tips for prospective students Explore the organizations and clubs. Also, talk to admissions officers in your program before applying; they can offer some great tips.
Academic Rigor Pitt is one of the top universities in the country, and it places a high standard on the academics of its students. Luckily, there are many programs in place to help students succeed.
Dorm Life I will not personally be living in the dorms, but Pitt has a good selection of dorms to choose from.
Food and Dining The college food isn't the best, but there are tons of restaurants surrounding the campus in downtown Pittsburgh.
What to do for fun Pittsburgh is a huge sports city and there is always some sort of sporting event. Pirates games, Steelers games, Penguins games, and of course Pitt sports are all great ways to get out and have fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At the end of the third quarter at football games the school sings Sweet Caroline.
Clubs and Activities Pitt has a great social scene and there are so many clubs and organizations to join.
Greek Life The Greek life isn't very prominent on campus, not like in the south. It does have its place, though, and the people who join it love it.
Campus Safety Oakland is not the safest city in the world, but the Pitt Police do their jobs well and make sure the campus is safe for students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This school is a superb one to go to-- whether it be the great neighborhood, enriching atmosphere, decent price and wide variety of academic opportunities. It is a 5 minute bus ride from the city itself, so you get both the city and a suburban feel. There is a sense of a close community that I didn't feel from other schools I visited (either when looking at schools or visiting friends).
Tips for prospective students Get involved and out of your comfort zone. Take a performance class, join a club or class that sounds interesting, study abroad, intern or do research to build your resume--- there's so many choices and you'll only grow from the ones you make!
Academic Rigor This depends on many things: teacher, class level ( undergrad, grad, honors), the class itself (biology is going to be harder than say performance), course of study and how interested you are in the class. Overall, I'd say Pitt (since it's a big research and medical school) is a 3.5-4/ 5 for academic rigor, because it's definitely harder than state schools and community colleges... not everyone that applies gets in and it doesn't get as much state funding as state schools.
Dorm Life From what I've heard, dorm life is great and everyone loves it. Move in day is a little overwhelming, as theres so many people trying to move in. They are building another dorm though! The dorm directors also plan activities sometimes too. I live off campus in an apartment though, and I've had a great experience with that (and cheaper than a dorm as well).
Food and Dining Like most colleges, after a while the Freshmen get tired of having all those meal swipes and the food isn't always what you want... with that said, there is a wide variety of food in the cafeteria and it's been decent the times I've been there. (Since I live off campus I don't have a meal plan). There are many restaurants (especially pizza places!) and a grocery store on Forbes for food. Rite aid also sells food, and you can take a bus to Giant Eagle, there's also some restaurants that deliver to the dorms as well.
What to do for fun Like I said earlier, there's sooo many options for ways to get involved outside of the academics. There's different recreational sports, service clubs, language clubs, ones for different hobbies; internship and job opportunities; research options. There's concerts and minor/major sports games that go on, as well as school sports. A park is located on campus and some museums, buses downtown for movies, concerts and the mall... You can even take a look around the nationality rooms in the Cathedral and the Bigelow Bash that has a free concert and other things in the Spring (this year was Cobra Starship, last year Kesha).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Dave and Andy's on Atwood has great homemade icecream and you can smell them make the waffle cones! Also, Noodles and Company makes great dishes! There's even a hookah bar in an old church.
Campus Safety Suppppppper safe! There are blue call boxes all over campus, you can see one while standing at another at night. They've tested these boxes on the news, and police answer within 2 seconds and are there within 2 minutes. You can see police (the university and pittsburgh police) walking, in cars, on bikes... that' doesn't mean it's a very dangerous place or that everyone feels claustrophobic, it's quite the opposite!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pitt is a great school in a great city. I have had great experiences with most of my classes and professors. There is so much to do throughout the city.
Tips for prospective students Go to Pitt! you won't regret it
Academic Rigor I think it all depends on which classes you take, you can probably get by taking a lot of relatively easy classes but if you want a more rigorous academic experience you can definitely get that here.
What to do for fun Evereything! there are parties, bars, shopping, movies, a whole city to explore.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences My decision to enroll at the University of Pittsburgh was the best I ever made. The incorporation of a college campus into a beautiful city cannot be found anywhere else. Its academics, athletics, extracurriculars, and city feel are unparalleled.
Tips for prospective students Enjoy the city! You should never be bored in Pittsburgh. You are on a safe, college campus in the middle of one of the greatest and most beautiful cities in the United States...take advantage of that. There is so much opportunity not only academically within the university, but socially and entertainment-wise as well.
Academic Rigor Classes are not impossible, but they are by no means a walk in the park. Class rigor definitely depends on your choice of major, but each course is difficult in its own right. My track of political science requires much reading and writing, while the engineering track requires countless hours of math problems. Don't expect to have it easy academically, but the classes are very rewarding if you put the effort into your work.
Dorm Life I was privileged in receiving Sutherland (my top choice) for my dorm. On top of the hill, Sutherland has the most spacious rooms for freshmen and private bathrooms. Though, life in towers is not a bad one either. I had many friends living there, and the sense of community you build with your floor and surrounding floors is great. Living in towers puts you right in the middle of lower campus, which has its ups and downs. While Sutherland is on top of the hill, far quieter, and close to the Peterson Events Center, its downfall is the fact that it is on a hill...be ready to walk.
Food and Dining Though the cafeterias are huge and offer wonderful food, dining halls do get old. Luckily, Quickzone shops in both Sutherland and Towers offer a convenience-style store for students. If those don't suit you, forbes and fifth offer every type of food imaginable. You will not go hungry in Pittsburgh.
What to do for fun Everything. If you aren't at a Pitt-sponsored event, you have every sports team to watch in the city. Additionally, Pitt offers free access to most museums and exhibits. You are in the middle of a city...take advantage of it. Explore Pittsburgh, go ice skating at PPG place in the winter, go throw a frisbee on the Cathedral lawn...anything!
Bang for the buck I have not regretted my choice at all. Pitt is one of the most affordable public colleges out there, and it offers more than most colleges. Besides a tremendous education, the campus and city offer so much more than academics.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus My favorite locations on campus were the hole-in-the wall restaurants. I went over half a year without knowing many restaurants existed that were AMAZING. It will surely take my entire four years and more to find everything Pittsburgh has to offer. I enjoyed running around campus and into Pittsburgh. It gave me a different perspective of the city and allowed me to see many neighborhoods and buildings that I would not have seen otherwise. I recommend taking a jog or a walk into new areas (in the daytime of course).
Great for these types of students Any student who loves the hustle and bustle of the city will adore Pitt. But even students who don't appreciate the city as much won't be disappointed. Pitt is unique in that it offers the campus safety and feel in the middle of a city. 15 minutes in either direction put you in the heart of Pittsburgh, but Oakland remains safe and campus-esque. Introverts, extroverts, and the like will appreciate everything this campus has to offer.
Clubs and Activities I am a member of the Pitt Intramural Soccer and the Pitt Ski and Snowboard Team. Get involved with as much as you can. Almost all sports are represented at Pitt, including Quidditch. There is a club for almost everything, from religious to environmental to political organizations...even Humans v. Zombies...there are countless clubs and activities to join.
Greek Life I am a member of Delta Chi. I did not plan on joining a fraternity at Pitt, but here I am. I absolutely love the sense of brotherhood I have received. I truly believe I have made life-long friends already. The Greek systems allows for much more socialization and opens you up to a completely new community of students you would not have otherwise met. Additionally, many fraternities and sororities offer networking opportunities with alumni in and following your tenure at Pitt.
Campus Safety The campus is extremely safe, especially for its location. Campus police are everywhere, and there are buttons that link to the police station in site wherever you are on campus. Though, you are in Pittsburgh, so wondering off of campus into south Oakland or the city is not the safest of places to be. Walk with a buddy at night, know where you are at all times, and you shouldn't have a problem with safety.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Pittsburgh is fabulous. It's located in a beautiful city that has much to offer to students. As far as a great college experience goes, University of Pittsburgh has it all.
Tips for prospective students There are a few things that can be potentially intimidating about Pitt's campus. This includes that fact that it's an urban campus, and the hills. No need to worry about either. I feel extremely safe on campus despite the urban culture. The hills - you get used to walking to class. One last thing - you WILL end up with swipes for Market Central leftover at the end of the year. Most students eat there once every two days, or so. Dining dollars are a lot more convenient and useful so you should get as many as you can.
Academic Rigor I am currently an engineering major at Pitt. My classes were extremely challenging my freshman year - more so than I expected. I actually had to learn how to study and what worked best for me. Even my electives, which were supposedly blow off classes were challenging. I have never had to put so much hard work into classes. You learn that you need to understand things on a much deeper basis than just a surface level understanding. Surface level understanding at Pitt will get you nowhere. It takes a lot of discipline to do practice problems for homework when you don't have to turn any in. You really are held accountable for learning on your own also. Professors are there to give an overview, the rest is up to you and how you use your resources (books, TA's, professors etc.). All and all, it's challenging, yet rewarding.
Dorm Life Dorm life at the University of Pittsburgh is awesome. I lived in Forbes, home to the SPACE living learning community. Basically everyone in my dorm was a freshman engineer. This was fantastic. During the week, everyone was working hard. There weren't the typical dorm distractions. We all understood the amount of work we had to do and respected each other. If you ever had questions about anything, there was always someone else working on the same assignment or project. It was a great way to meet people with similar interests and get to know people outside of classes. Our residence assistants were also fabulous. They were all upperclassmen engineers. They were fun, yet proved to be great role models for the residents in my building. The dorms were always clean, thanks to the housekeeping staff. And the number one thing - I always felt safe.
Food and Dining Market Central is the main cafeteria on campus. Though it's good the first few weeks you get to campus, the food soon gets old. There is some variety in what is offered there, as long as you go at the right time. Towards the end of the day, they begin to run out of things. I personally would like Market to serve breakfast food longer throughout the week. Other than Market, there are bunch of food courts that you can dine in on campus. These are all awesome and offer a wide variety of food. Some of these places are known restaurants, including Einstein's Bagels and Chick-fil-A. These places were personally my favorite. The QuickZone also offered a wide variety of food that you could purchase to eat then, or bring back to your dorm for later. I bought food and would bring it back to my dorm. That way if I just wanted to eat in for a meal, I always had something I could make. Lastly, Pitt features Market-to-go. Market-to-go offers fresh made meals as well as sandwiches and salads, all to go. This was a easy, quick way to grab a warm meal after a long day of classes that you could bring anywhere to eat.
What to do for fun Being located in a city, the University of Pittsburgh has a vast assortment of things to do for fun both on campus and off campus. There is downtown Pittsburgh, where students can enjoy Penguins games, and Pirate games. There is South Side where students can shop and go out to eat. There are all the other neighborhoods that each offer their own little something special included, but not limited to: the Waterfront, Squirrel Hill and Shady Side. These places are all easily accessible using the Port Authority busing system which is free with the use of student ID. Students can also tour through the many museums throughout the city as well as right near campus. CMU has many great places to tour though. Near campus is Schenley Park. Schenley offers a picnic area with a scenic view of campus where students can play lawn games or cook out. There are also the trails and Schenley Oval which are great for those looking for a peaceful place to run. On campus, the Union features Nordy's Place. Students can come here and play pool or ping pong or just hang out and watch sports. Forbes Avenue is home to numerous restaurants and shops that are located close to campus. For those interested in athletics, the Peterson Event Center and Trees Hall are open to anyone who wants to workout or watch a varsity sporting event.
Bang for the buck Pitt is relatively average for in-state tuition and a little on the steep side for out-of-state. You definitely get your money's worth though. Pitt has many great things to offer to its students, both academically and socially.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Taiwan Cafe located a block or two from Towers has fantastic Chinese food. This little hole-in-the-wall restaurant is always crawling with students who are back for some more authentic cuisine. They offer good deals to students during their lunch and dinner hours. Joe Mama's has classic Italian food for great prices as well and is located on Forbes Ave. A personal favorite of mine is Fuel and Fuddle which offers a wide variety of food - half priced after 11! Pitt has a few traditions: take a picture by the Panther located near the Union, ride the buses to Heinz for a football where you can join classmates in the singing of Sweet Caroline with our own twist on it, see if the freshman can continuously break the world record set by the previous class during their orientation week, see the Cathedral lit up upon the winning of a sporting event, among many others!
Great for these types of students Pitt is a great school for any type of student. Being a major university in the state of Pennsylvania, it offers numerous majors which encompass all different kinds of students. Pitt has a place for everyone and does not discriminate based on interests. Pitt prides itself on being a top public university and accepts the cream of the crop. Everyone is intelligent and encouraged to grow through their interests while at the University.
Clubs and Activities There is something for everyone at Pitt. If you can't find something you're interested in, then it's easy to make your own club. All you need is a few other students a professor who is interested in endorsing the activity. Pitt's clubs are easily joined and welcome students of all kinds. Every year, Pitt holds an activity fair where students can go and obtain information about all the clubs and activities available to them on campus.
Greek Life Greek life is fairly popular at Pitt. Students are neither pressured to join, nor frowned upon if they don't join Greek life. It's available to all of those who are interested. Also somewhat popular are the professional fraternities. All of the above foster great networking and friendships.
Campus Safety I feel extremely safe on Pitt's campus. Not only do we have security guards stationed at the entrance of every residence hall, but the Pitt police are always patrolling. Occasionally, a Pittsburgh city police car will drive by. This tells me that not only are Pitt police looking out for us, but also the city police. Then there are always those blue light safety features located all throughout campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences University of Pittsburgh is a great school for those who want the aspescts of a city atmosphere while still having a defined campus. The school is set in a beautiful safe city with great food and sports atmosphere. The people in pittsburgh are very nice, and public transportation is very conveniant.
Tips for prospective students You don't need a car
Bring warm clothes
Bring bootsDorm Life The dorms are great, the towers are lots of fun for freshman.
Food and Dining Lots of food options
What to do for fun Sporting events, concerts, intramurals, conservatory.
Bang for the buck Pittsburgh isn't a very expensive city, for students all public transportation is free, There is wifi practically everywhere on campus, season tickets for football are 25$ compared to 200$ for Penn State.
Campus Safety Pitt has a system where between any hours you can call a special service that will come and pick you up. you can use it 20 times a semester and bring 2 friends with you. There is also police call boxes all around campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It is an awesome school with a lot of opportunities. You have to remember that this school is huge and you have to put in extra effort to get the professor to remember your name, especially in large lectures like bio and chem. Take advantage of all that Pitt has to offer so that you get ALL your money's worth.
Tips for prospective students Join clubs and get to know people so that the school doesn't seem so big. Stay on top of your work because that is why you are in school. When choosing your meal plan, get more dining dollars than meal swipes because you will not be going to the Market Central as much as you think you might.
Academic Rigor This is definitely rigorous. You have to stay on top of your work, especially if you are premed. Explore all the majors that they offer here. You may think that you want to major in something, but later realize it is not really for you. Be curious and enjoy what you are learning. They have some really interesting classes to choose from.
Dorm Life Oh Dorm life..it is not that bad. I actually enjoy it. I live in a single and love all the privacy I get. Even in a single I still get to hang out with the people on my floor. It is like having a bunch of floormates to choose from instead of just one roommate. Anyway, the bathrooms are cleaned everyday and most people are not dirty. Sometimes people can get loud, but what do you expect when you have a bunch of friends together. The dorm life is basically what you make of it. Just relax and have a good time.
Food and Dining Market Central is nice, they have a bunch of different stations to choose from. It will get a bit tiresome having that as the main option, but if you balance out where you eat, you won't get tired of it so quickly. Try and eat at places like the union and cathedral cafe everyone once in a while so that you are not eating the saem thing all the time. Also hit up einstein's bros. for some tasty bagels and other sandwiches. There are a lot of options on campus and when you go off campus dining, there are still a bunch of options to chose from.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students that like to experience new things, take opportunities, meet new people, have a good time, and get things done.
Greek Life There is a good amount of greek life here on campus, but not everyone is greek. I would say that out of ten people you meet about 4 of them are probably in a sorority or fraternity. Some can check my stats to get a more official number lol
Campus Safety This school is ridiculously safe. Just don't act stupid and you should be fine :)

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences such a fantastic learning institution. transferred here and have never been happier because the people are fantastic, as well as the city.
Tips for prospective students apply early, and come to the university of pittsburgh!
Academic Rigor definitely difficult, but not overwhelming. great preparation for the real world.
Dorm Life the dorms on upper campus are very nice and have a great sense of community. pitt is building more dorms in lower campus so it will be nice having more people on campus.
Food and Dining average college food but definitely tolerable. good all you can style.
What to do for fun hang with friends, go to sporting events, go to museums. so much to do!
Bang for the buck great education! and the dorms are fantastic.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus go to the sporting events and then to the cathedral if they win a football game.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i would give the university of pittsburgh an a overall. i choose this grade because it is a great academic school with a variety of opportunities for anything you want with a great city feel around and outside the campus. the only downfall is some of the outdated buildings, which are being re-done, and the campus selection of food.
Tips for prospective students things i wish i knew as a prospective student would be about what to bring, campus dining, and the work. as you enter college you are worried that you need to bring everything and can't bear without some clothes but you can, minimize the amount of things you bring -especially useless stuff - so you can have a more spacious room but make it feel homey to you. the campus dining at market isn't the greatest but not terrible i recommend more dining dollars so you are able to eat at the cathedral and union, it's always good to change it up. last, the work in college, although you have heard it a million times, is a tremendous difference especially if you choose a harder major but it is possible so do not stress and embrace it.
Academic Rigor the university of pittsburgh has great academic programs and harder majors require a lot more work. i have compared my freshman engineering schedule to my friends at other schools and it is significantly more but i feel it only prepares us for the outside world and gets us ready for the work in the following years as upperclassmen.
Dorm Life i chose to live in a living learning community for engineering and i absolutely love it. you form a family with your building, especially since the community is smaller. this allowed us all to bond, make new friends that we will see in class, and there is a support group if you do not understand certain concepts you are learning in class.
Food and Dining the food on campus can vary. the food at the union or at the cathedral are usually very good. the food at market and the perch however vary. it is pretty good food for a cafeteria but it can get old fast since two places only change their menus everyday. there are still a lot of options there and we have market to go for a quick source of food which is usually pretty good.
What to do for fun there is a lot to do for fun in oakland and pittsburgh other than the normal college experience of partying. a great thing about being around the city is it is easy to go to the festivals in pittsburgh or a concert downtown. also there are a lot of restaurants and stores or shopping places to go to around the pittsburgh.
Bang for the buck i feel the university is a fair price for the academic resources they offer.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the cathedral is unusual in the fact that it is solely our campus building and is known. also there is that panther which we rub the nose for good luck before the game.
Great for these types of students pittsburgh is great for any student there are many options for majors and the diversity on campus is huge.
Clubs and Activities pitt has a great amount of clubs and groups that anyone can get involved with and will fit anyone's need.
Greek Life there is greek life around campus and people love to join it but it is not one of the campus' where it is necessary to have fun and be part of an organization.
Campus Safety we have an extremely safe campus with pittsburgh and campus police. also there are safe lights around the campus at all the buildings.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor it all really depends on what classes you take. some majors/classes are notoriously easy while others (like a lot of the sciences) are pretty hard. classes are generally easy to pass but can be difficult to get an a in.
Dorm Life i live in the honor's dorm, and i love it. the people are interesting and not all are the stereotypical anti-partying bookworms. the fact that it's generally pretty quiet is a definite plus.
Food and Dining there's a lot of options at the dining halls, but you get sick of them within a couple of months. luckily you're dining plan can get you access to taco bell, chick-fil-a, sushi, starbucks brand coffee, and lots of other great stuff.
What to do for fun pitt has an awesome problem called pitt arts where you can get free/discounted tickets to cultural events. they also generally provide food, too.
Bang for the buck you get free access to the city buses, free passes to museums, cheap concert tickets, and a lot of fun events to attend. tuition is cheap compared to private schools and i definitely feel like i'm getting my money's worth.
Great for these types of students anyone. it's a huge school and everyone can find something. if you don't, you're not trying hard enough.

Tips for prospective students if you want a great experience, come to pitt.
Academic Rigor definitely four stars. many programs are prestigious, tough, selective and train for the best. you'll be pushed. awards are for the persistent; those who are willing to accept a challenge.
Dorm Life three stars. current juniors will be the first freshman to utilize the new residence hall currently under construction. there are pros and cons to all freshman housing options, but overall, it's nice.
Food and Dining three stars. there are many off-campus places that are college-kid-friendly. but even on campus, the options are broad.
What to do for fun it's pittsburgh: there are som many things to do. the campus location is ideal. opportunites are endless.
Bang for the buck i'm playing out of state tuition. but they offer scholarships. also, i'm in their pharmacy program. if they have what you want, it's totally worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there are so many different groups, clubs, and organizations. pretty much anything you could possibly imagine. we sing sweet caroline during the third quarter of football games. the cathedral is pretty monumental.
Great for these types of students any and all.

Greek Life i'm not in greek life, but it's pretty active. there are a lot of frats and sororities here.

Tips for prospective students work hard and remember that a well-rounded person is a more successful person. while it is great to succeed at academics and sports, it is also very important that you give back to the community. you must show that you can put yourself out there for someone else.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences pitt is an amazing school. it was a great mix of a campus feel and a city atmosphere. there are many things to do and also many employment/internship opportunites in the city.
Tips for prospective students send in your dorm forms as soon as possible
Academic Rigor while some classes are more difficult than others, the majority of my classes have been very challenging and required a lot of outside work and effort.
Dorm Life although the newer dorms are nicer, i lived in an older dorm and still loved it. everything you need is so close and there are tons of people to hang out with.
Food and Dining there are a lot of options, so you wont always be stuck at the same cafeteria. however, the only annoying this is that a lot of things close on the weekend, so i would ususally end up eating out.
What to do for fun there are tons of restuarnts, musmeums, and places to shop. there are also tons of bars if youre 21, and lots of parties if you're not.
Bang for the buck if your instate, you get an education like that of a private school for a public price. however, any college is extrememely expensive, and pitt is one of highest priced public universities in the country.
Clubs and Activities tons to choose from!
Greek Life only about ten percent of students are in greek life, so if you want to be apart of it its amazing, but if you dont you dont feel left out. being a part of greek life makes the campus seem smaller and gives you a lot of opportunities.
Campus Safety the pitt and pittsburgh police are always around, and the unviersity has other things in place as well to promote safety. however, the school is still located in a city, so dangers are still present.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Class at Pitt can seem daunting when coming from a small high school due to the mere size of the Gen. Ed. classes. However, the longer you're here, the smaller the classes get. Good news is the larger classes are larger because you're unlikely to need a lot of individual attention because they're far easier and a lot less work than your smaller classes (but none the less informative). The professors I've had thus far have been entertaining and very willing to help out any student, and I've yet to experience any unfair grading or extremely difficult exams. Overall, I'm very happy with my education thus far and look forward to my next semester at Pitt!
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do in Pittsburgh and so much to see whether you're looking for cuisine, museums, culture, or social interactions. We have professional baseball, football, and hockey teams in Pittsburgh so all sorts of sports fans can feel at home. The museums are large and within walking distance and since Pitt provides free transportation on the local Port Authority bus system, you can travel anywhere in the city at no cost. Great food is everywhere and there are famous eateries right on campus including Primanti Brothers and Quaker Steak and Lube (both featured on Man v. Food on the Travel Channel). Pitt also sponsors a constant array of entertainment including sponsoring trips around the city and bringing in therapy dogs for students to pet and love on once a week. The campus is also beautiful and surprising open for a city campus. In the early fall and spring there are enough open places for one to relax and enjoy the weather both on campus and within walking distance and there is a beautiful park less than a mile away where one can enjoy surprisingly quiet and peaceful wildlife on beautiful trials right in the middle of a city. If you're more of an indoor person, residence halls are lovely and Pitt also offers a single dorm option (even for freshmen) for those who are less social and are not yet ready to have a roommate. With free Internet and cable and a two large libraries located on lower campus, an indoor person can enjoy both video-games or a good book. The only downside of the city is that in the late fall and winter, Pitt experiences a fair share of rainy, dreary, and bitterly cold days, However, it gives you a better chance to get to know your roommates and floor mates!
Bang for the buck Pitt is not the most affordable college in the world. Most financial aid comes from Federal and State assistance rather than from the institution itself. This is because Pitt is a public institution and unfortunately the state of Pennsylvania does not have the plethora funding for higher education that some states possess. However, the education and research opportunities are excellent and Pitt is definitely a good undergraduate choice before attending graduate school.
Tips for prospective students Apply for outside scholarships and definitely do as well as you can on the SATs or ACTs because it will help you in the long run when trying to be admitted to the Honors College and receiving larger institutional scholarships. Also, visit the campus, because it really is true that the feeling of the college campus is correlated to the amount of happiness you experience once you enroll.
Great for these types of students Pitt is ideal for urban-dwellers, aspiring researchers, and those who get bored easily, because there is always an abundance of entertainment!

Bang for the buck It's a little expensive for my family and I, but not ridiculously priced!
Tips for prospective students Make sure to apply early! It's a competitive and popular school, so make sure to work extra hard and make your application as best as it can be.
Great for these types of students Hardworking, school-spirited, city-lover, sports-enthused

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes here at Pitt are very interesting and stimulating. Not only have I learned new things but I have also found interests in subjects I never thought I would enjoy. Pitt has a large number of classes to pick from, the choices are endless! You can find everything from Introductory Italian to Islamic Civilization to Mesoamerica Before Cortez to Introduction to Western Architecture and those are just 4 out of hundreds of classes to pick from.
Am enjoying being here The University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland district of Pittsburgh and is surrounded by museums, art galleries, and even a botanical conservatory. It is a short walk to Schenley Park which has its own golf course and also just a bus ride away from downtown Pittsburgh where there are even more things to do.
Bang for the buck I think that even for all that the University of Pittsburgh has to offer, it costs too much to attend here. The tuition keeps rising and the students don't seem to be gaining any more benefits. With that said, Pitt does provide students with an exceptional education and many different activites to do on campus.
Tips for prospective students Come visit campus. I did not really want to attend Pitt until I visited campus and found out how beautiful the campus was. You would think that since Pitt is in a city, it is busy and dirty and disgusting but it is funny to see all the people that come to Pitt and are surprised how beautiful, clean, and green the campus really is.
Great for these types of students Pitt is a great school for any Pre-Medicine or Pre-Health major. Pitt is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which can help prospective medical students out alot. I received a job during my first semester at a laboratory and it has given me amazing exposure as a Pre-Med major that I would not have had access to at any other university or college

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning a lot, but in order to do well on tests and quizzes you have to make sure that you keep up with your work. Going to school at a competitive university is not like high school. You have to go to class AND office hours/reviews. Even if you are doing well in a class you need to put in the extra effort.
Am enjoying being here The University of Pittsburgh is the perfect combination of city life and down home feel. I do a lot of traveling and Pittsburgh is one of the friendliest cities I have ever been to. The transportation is really easy to figure out and your Pitt I.D. lets you ride any city bus for free.
Bang for the buck The University of Pittsburgh is a fairly expensive school if you are out of state. It does provide a great education and is very well known for its science department. If you are aspiring for a job that where you graduated from really does matter it is a great school.
Tips for prospective students No matter what college you go to make sure that you keep up with your work. Studying for an exam the day before is not going to work anymore. Also, make sure that you go for help when you need it. There is no shame in not understanding something, but there is in failing out because you were too proud to get help. The best advice I can give is to make sure that you go to the office hours and e-mail your teachers with questions. If your teachers know who you are and consistently see you in class they are more likely to give you a better grade, especially in classes where grading is subjective. Also ask questions, professors are more likely to bump up a grade that is on the verge if they know a student is trying and participating. Sit up front in big lecture halls. This serves two purposes, it lets the professor get to know you and you are more likely to pay attention.
Great for these types of students It is great for students who are pre-med. There are endless research/volunteer opportunities in Pittsburgh. It is also good for students who like the advantages of the city yet don't want to be in an environment as cut-throat and fast paced as NYC. Also, the housing is inexpensive for being in a city if you choose to move off campus after your freshman year.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There's a lot of review in most below-1000-level classes if you've taken a course on it before (in high school, for example) but it's worth it and the teachers do build on it. Once you get to the upper levels it's mostly new knowledge.
Am enjoying being here The school is great with helpful staff and faculty and the campus is beautiful. There are tons of things to do (many of them free with your student ID) and places to go and things to see and you get a really cultured experience. Everyone is really kind.
Bang for the buck The classes are good, the programs are trusted, and they will work really hard to help you get a job. There are tons of networking opportunities and, since it is in a fairly large city, opportunities to work while still in school (including high rates of recruitment right from your program).
Tips for prospective students Be serious about your prerequisites. There are quite a few of them and you'll want to get them done early or you may not graduate on time.
Great for these types of students This school has some party life but it's not a pure party school. If you want to actually learn and actually get a good education, this is for you. You don't have to be the most dedicated student in the world but you can't be lazy or just want to party, either.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Pitt is by no means an easy school, but it's definitely managable. Study hard and you'll be fine. There are tons of different classes and class sizes, so there is a place for anyone and everyone. There are also tons of resources such as the Hillman library, many computer labs, and lots of other good services to help you out. The professors are great, and you'll learn a lot.
Am enjoying being here Pitt campus is wonderful! It's safe, in a central location (buses are free with your Pitt ID and will get you anywhere you want to go), and there's tons to do! There are Pitt events going on all the time, but there are also plenty of shops and restaurants around whenever you feel like doing something else. Also, there are lots of sports events, art shows, theatre productions, concerts, etc. on or near campus!
Bang for the buck If you're willing to go to various events, you will definitely get your moneys-worth. There are tons of free-to-Pitt-student events, discounts on cool things such as plays, art exhibits, and sporting events. You'll learn a lot, and can do a lot at Pitt. Definitely worth the money.
Tips for prospective students Don't let the typical cheesy college tour fool you. This school is great.
Great for these types of students Particularly good for Pre-Med students because of it's affiliation with UPMC, but any and every kind of student will find many opportunities here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The class choices are so incredible. You can find anything from your serious major classes to a class on The Beatles. I have learned so much from my professors, especially from just being in class. It can be easy to think you can slip by at such a large school, but it's so important to participate! You get so much more out of your education that way.
Am enjoying being here Everyone is so friendly, in the city and at the school. There are students EVERYWHERE so it truly feels like a community, which is difficult to do with a city school as large as Pitt. The best part is the Pitt Pride! Football season is huge and basketball season is even better. Don't miss out on our fantastic Division I teams!
Bang for the buck I definitely feel like I'm getting a private school education for a public school price. There are so many opportunities for research and internships through Pitt so it gives you way more than just classes and tests. The engineering program is one of the best in the country, along with the philosophy program and nursing. And there are so many majors to choose from! All of the majors are comprehensive and exhaustive so take your pick!
Tips for prospective students Get your deposit in early so you can have your pick of dorms. Take advantage of all the free stuff and discounts you get just for being a student: students ride the public bus system for FREE and you can get hundreds of tickets to art shows, musicals, and plays at great discounts through the Pitt Arts program (just to name a few). Also, GET INVOLVED! There are hundreds of clubs on campus and tons of other ways to make new friends. Avoid that Freshman 15 by going to one of our many gyms. There are plenty of machines and weights to use and helpful students everywhere to help you reach your fitness goals... all for free!
Great for these types of students Hard-working, fun-loving, friendly, outgoing, studious, dedicated, athletic

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here I absolutely love the campus. There is a lot to do. There are so many different clubs, museums for free, restaurants, and areas to visit. Every person I have met has been so friendly.
Bang for the buck It is rather expensive, and I have some difficulties finding specific scholarships from PITT, but I have received a good amount of financial aid.
Tips for prospective students Go to class and recitation. Your TA's are there for a reason. If you have a question, they are there to answer them. If you need to set up an appointment with a professor, they are generally flexible to set up a time and help you out. If you work hard, play hard. Take the time to get to know everyone you meet: your classmates, floormates, roommates, RA, etc. Enjoy yourself. You do have a lot of new freedoms, but use them wisely.
Great for these types of students If you like the city, this is a good school for you. PITT is well known for their medicine program. The student population is very diverse with students coming all the way from the coast of California or internationally from China to local students from Pittsburgh.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although most of my impressions are from the engineering department, the depth and quality of my 2 music electives lead me to believe that the university is top notch in all departments. Specifically, the engineering program will not only teach you general math/science/computer concepts, but it will also force you to learn how to handle multiple projects, tests, and how to maintain a reasonable social life. You will quickly learn what time management/study methods work best for you, which will most certainly help you in your post-college life.
Am enjoying being here Although the campus appears to be hectic and somewhat intimidating, you quickly realize that the majority of others are in the same situation you are, trying to juggle school and friends. My favorite part of the campus is the high energy environment, which really keeps you awake and busy. There is also plenty to do, depending on what you enjoy. You can visit the Carnegie museums, go to Southside to grab a bite, or catch a laser light show at the Science Center (this is my personal favorite). Because your Pitt ID doubles as a bus pass, you can reach any of these destinations in a few minutes, at no cost to you.
Bang for the buck Pitt is definitely one of the more expensive public universities, but the quality of education makes up for it. Specifically for the engineering program, most students participate in a co-op program. The program consists of a work/study cycle in which the job openings are secured through the engineering school. This program provides highly valuable work experience, increasing chances that graduates will be hired as soon as the finish college. This co-op program is what really sold me on picking Pitt, because it gets you involved with big name companies, and exposes you to the job environment you can expect to be in when you finish schooling.
Tips for prospective students The most important thing is to pay attention in lecture. It's completely different from high school, with most teachers only providing a few examples, expecting you to learn most concepts on your own. The faster you realize that you need to look over you notes on a regular basis, the better off you will be. Also, if you see that you're distracted in lecture by a friend of yours, explain the situation to them and sit somewhere else. This was one of my biggest realizations, because if you sit with a big group, you'll quickly stop paying attention in lecture and you will fall behind. Lastly, although study groups are a good way to clarify specific problems, individual study will make up most of your studying, because figuring something out for yourself is the best way to truly learn it and understand it.
Great for these types of students In my opinion, the university best fits self motivated and hardworking students that can think creatively. The majority of classes will be very large lecture halls that don't allow for much student/teacher communication. You simply have to be ready to focus on the fact that you are there to learn and to set a solid foundation for your future.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have to say that from my experiences taking classes at Pitt, the professors are excellent. They were truly helpful with any questions or concerns I had. Whenever I had questions about the content I was studying at the time I had so many avenues where I could find help. I could go to the Academic Resource Center for tutoring, group study sessions performed by TA's during the week, e-mailing professors or teacher's assistants for explanation, and if all that didn't work I could always go to speak with my professor during their required office hours. I have found that alot of proffesors may be intimidating in a lecture hall but when you speak to them one on one, it's completely different, they are actually human beings!!!
Am enjoying being here I love the city of Pittsburgh, it is so rich with culture. Fortunately, the school reflects the vibrancy of the city. If you walk through Pitt's campus you will see people playing extreme frisbee, volleyball, basketball, football etc. If you are a sports lover, then Pitt is definitely for you. Pitt's football games always have great attendance by students. SO COME JOIN IN ON THE FUN!
Bang for the buck It seems like so much is free at Pitt. We have free city bus rides, we have free use of gyms in every dorm building, we also receive free virus protection for our computers as well as microsoft software and lojack for tracking laptops if they are stolen. Another perk is the fact that every student has 900 pages of paper for printing those papers. Students also have full use of any computer lab on campus which are equipped with Mac and Dell desktops. Some of the computer labs are open past midnight which is a great convenience for printing those early morning papers.
Tips for prospective students It snows a lot in Pittsburgh so bring your skis and a few pairs of snow boots. You should also bring shower shoes because we have communal bathrooms in most dorms; only suites and apartments on campus have private bathrooms. If you are seeking extra cash there are tons of stores on campus that hire Pitt students, and don't worry they won't ask you to work crazy hours, they know you're students. GET OUT THERE AND MEET YOUR LIFELONG FRIENDS!
Great for these types of students Pitt is great for students who love sports
Students who love meeting people from all over the world
Students who love to learn not just academically but also socially

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Pitt is a great place for self-motivated students. I've found that professors have a lot to offer, both academically and professionally. But, you have to put forward the effort.
Am enjoying being here Pittsburgh is a great city, but it's freezing. That's the biggest downside. Oh yeah, and it rains all the time. Anyways, I love the school. It's a good mix between academics and partying, and I love all the school spirit.
Tips for prospective students Like others have said, go to class!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Everyone has their own way of learning. Just make sure you attend class EVERYDAY and take good notes! Make flash cards and set up appointments with your professors, TAs, or tutors if you need more help.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here. There is always something to do even if its not on campus. You can use your Pitt ID to ride the bus for free. You can go downtown, the water front and alot of other places to eat, shop, sight see, and have fun.
Tips for prospective students College is way different than high school!! In high school I NEVER studied, but made all A's. I came to college with that same mind set and had a rude awakening. Studying is VERY important! I got 50%s on my first exams, then I started to study more, the 50 went to a 70 and on the last tests i took I got both A's. I thought I wasn't going to be able to handle it after the first test, but I used time management and studied for each class a certain amount of time on certain days and that certainly helped me! Good luck!
Great for these types of students Outgoing students who love sports.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes are difficult, but usually the professors are really nice. As an engineering major there's a lot to learn and it can be easy to fall behind.
Am enjoying being here Pittsburgh is a pretty nice city, but Oakland is definitely one of the worst sections; I enjoy taking refuge in Squirrel Hill during the weekends. It's nice during the spring and fall to enjoy the many parks around, like Frick Park, Schenley Park, and Melon Park. A couple cons are: Oakland is noisy and dirty, the people are REALLY loud Thursday-Sunday, and it can be hard to adjust to the city. (These are things you'd experience in virtually every city).
Bang for the buck It's a great education in the classroom, but what's more important here is the opportunities you get to actually WORK with your professors or other staff. There's almost no excuse to not have a research opportunity by the end of your first year--as long as you work hard.
Tips for prospective students Don't overwork yourself. Try to find a balance. If you're in the hard sciences, don't party it will catch up with you. Take advantage of PittArts. They usually have great symphony seats.
Great for these types of students Extroverts; introverts, you'll have to do a lot of adjusting. Artists.
