    Tips for prospective students

The University of South Carolina is an exceptional school to attend. The is always a function going on whether it be Carolina After Dark, a Greek function, or meetings for one of the school's student organizations. There are over 300 student organizations on the Columbia campus, which allows something for everyone. The classes are great and there are many great professor on campus. Alot of the classes after freshman year are smaller intricate classes that let you get familiar with others and the professor in class. The tuition is a little high, but that's any college, but it is all well worth it. Football season is great and another perk to the school is its Strom Gym, its one of the best in the country!

Great for these types of students

    Football fans
    Business majors
    Nursing majors
    Highly involved students

I love USC, GO GAMECOCKS!!!!! There is never a dull day at Carolina. There are always events going on and so many organizations to join. There are over 300 student organizations on the Columbia campus ranging from white water rafting club to clubs based on your career choice. My favorite event is Carolina After Dark. It is basically a night filled with food, music, movies and activities that allow you to show your creative side. The University of South Carolina is an exceptional school to attend. The classes are great and there are many great professor on campus. A lot of the classes after your freshman year are smaller than you would think. The teachers really focus on you as an individual and helping you learn the material.. Football season is great!!! There are so many activities to do the day of the game and the school has a shuttle to escort all the students to and from the game.

    Bang for the buck

Being at Carolina is really worth the money. You receive a great education and you'll never have a dull day.

    Tips for prospective students

Come ready to love the Fighting Gamecocks because there's a lot of school spirit.
Don't be afraid of bigger classes, the teachers are there for you.

At the University of South Carolina in Columbia, there are a multitude of classes to choose from. From the Psychology of Sex to the Philosophy of Contemporary Moral Issues, this University has many classes that will tickle your fancy. Being the number one University in the United States for International Business, this University will most definitely broaden your horizons! I have been learning so much since I have been at this University not just through classes, but through the numerous events going on around campus. There seems to never be down time at the University because of all the organizations. I took a Philosophy class which helped me really solidify my beliefs in different areas of government politics. If you are a hard working student who will take advangtage of all that the University has to offer, then the University of South Carolina is right for you.

    Am enjoying being here

I live in an on campus dormitory at the University of South Carolina and I love it! I love having freedom to come and go as I please and I love being able to have places to study as well. I recently attended a Carolina After Dark function which is located normally in the Russell House, which is at the center of the campus. The function offered different types of massages, make your own Pixie Sticks and lip balm, and even an oxygen bar! All of these events were FREE! The University of South Carolina is hard not to enjoy with all of its great activities. I highly recommned the University of South Carolina if you enjoy having a fun time and taking advantage of your education.

    Bang for the buck

Any college you attend is going to be expensive and the University of South Carolina is a bit expensive, but if you compare the value of the education, organizations, functions, free events, amazing friends, great atmosphere, postivie influence to the amount of money you pay, I would say that the University of South Carolina is a great bang for your buck.

    Tips for prospective students

This University is known to be a large party school, but my tip for you is to know what you want when you go into college. Do not fall for all of the drinking and the partying the college portrays. Rise above all of the stereotypes and excel! It is so easy to do at the University of South Carolina when you use all of its amazing resources offered. Work hard, make friends, get involved! You will never regret receiving an education from this University!

Great for these types of students

If you are a hard working, diligent student who really wishes to succeed and excel in your college then the University of South Carolina is the right college for you!

You can learn a lot, or you can learn very little. It all depends on what you make of the class. Of course there is the occasional professor who doesn't teach very well, but usually information can be found in the textbooks assigned for the class. Even so, talking to professors during their office hours helps as well since the professors are very knowledgeable about their subject areas. However, some classes seem completely pointless, and you will learn a very minimal and basic amount of information even though the class is required.

    Am enjoying being here

A lot of what makes an experience great and memorable is the people you get to share it with. There is a wide variety of people at USC with tons of different interests. The campus is beautiful and very well kept. The campus is always hopping with different events and activities to do, and being in a city, there are always parties, clubs, etc to go to. The university does a wonderful job of taking care of its students and helping where it can. The food is great, the people are great, everyone here is friendly, and its warm 85% of the time...even during the winter!

    Bang for the buck

The University itself is amazing and is a terrific college to attend. But like most colleges, the out of state rates are not cheap. But USC is great at giving out academic scholarships, even if it just lowers the scholarship to instate tuition. But instate tuition is very reasonably priced.

    Tips for prospective students

USC is a great school! But it has a reputation as a party school for a reason (especially on the weekends). However, there are people who don't party that hard and there are tons of things to do on campus that don't involve excessive partying. USC can offer a lot of academic rigor for those who feel like it might not. The South Carolina Honors College offers honors courses that take the course to the next level and offer that next step up that some students are looking for.

Great for these types of students

    Business Majors
    Nursing Majors
    Journalism Majors
    Engineering Majors
Students who want to get involved in undergraduate research (lots of opportunities for that)
Students looking for a school that has a lot of warm weather
Students interested in more than one subject area
    Football and sports lovers
Students looking to have fun in college and for academic challenges, but not so much that they have excessive amounts of work that keep them studying all night/weekend long

What took me a full year to half-understand in high school took me only about a semester to fully understand at USC. Plus, I probably learn more from my fellow gamecocks than I do in classes.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to do on campus, it's probably your own fault if you're bored. The weather is beautiful and the people are so nice and welcoming. No wonder South Carolina claims to have beautiful places and smiling faces.

    Bang for the buck

USC really is very generous with their scholarships. I am an out of state student, and I am going to this great school for less than I would have paid to go to a small in-state college. I am learning a lot, and making great connections for later in life (I hope).

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to go talk to the professors. Most of them want you to come talk to them. USC is really a great place. Oh, and embrace your inner gamecock. Yeah, you will probably get made fun in high school for saying Go Cocks! but it's worth it.

Great for these types of students

    Sports Fans
Anyone looking to be involved on a college campus

There is a wide range of classes available at the University of South Carolina. From various business classes, to languages, to music class (one about the beatles!), to whatever you want. The University has a wide range of majors, and is ranked number one for its program in International Business. The school has MANY connections for study abroad, and helps you find scholarships to do it. Even though there are 20,000+ students here, the class sizes are small providing for a good relationship with your teacher. My English class has 15 people in it! That is less than my class in High school. There are so many opportunities here, and many pre-professional programs to dig your heels into. With a student success center like ours, with free tutoring and many more resources there's no reason you should fear failing a class!

    Am enjoying being here

University of South Carolina has a state of the art fitness center that is extremely nice and includes a 40+ft. rock climbing wall! Even if you don't work out (like me), you can still go hang by the pool on the weekends to study or just spend time with your friends.
There are about 26 dining facilities on campus providing for a wide range of food choices. The food here never gets boring for me! Football is amazing, especially with our recent win over bama and attending this school means free student tickets (GREAT seats).
With so many events in Columbia, for example the state fair, there will never be a dull weekend here. Also, five points is walking distance from the campus to provide for more fun filled weekends!

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, everyone knows that. There are tons of scholarships available here. If you are out-of-state and you receive an academic scholarship (credentials on the school website) you will receive in state tuition. Now you can't tell me that's not a good deal! that provides for a very diverse environment here. There are 300+ student organizations and it is super easy to get involved. Not only is there an on campus bookstore at the Russel House for easy book purchase, there is a cheaper one off campus that is less than a quarter of a mile from the on campus bookstore! Very convenient!

    Tips for prospective students

There are a lot of fun things to do here in Columbia, but save it for the weekends! Focus on your studies during the week. Remember the real reason you came to college!

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE. There is literally a place for everyone here, no matter what type of person you are.

The academics here are challenging, and although the campus is huge and it may seem like professors do not care about your success, that is not true. I've found by talking with my professors and getting one on one help during their office hours that they really do care about your success in their class and at the university as a whole.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE the University of SC!! When you are not studying and doing homework there are so many things to do and so many friends to make! The beautiful campus is an added bonus.

    Bang for the buck

I never realized until I came to the university how much you get for your money. There is tutoring help and the library is open 24/7. Also included in your tution are visits to the student health center, so there is no excuse not to go when you are sick!! There are always free things to do on campus when you don't have a lot of money to go out. The Russell House theater plays 2 movies Thursday through Sunday. Also, if you get involved in an organization (which you should! there are over 300 organizations to get involved in!) they are always hosting free events for students.

    Tips for prospective students

Schedule classes earlier during the day so you will be more than likely to go! I'm not saying to take all 8 o'clock classes, but the sooner in the day you go to class, the sooner you are done. Also, make sure to get a planner! There are so many assignments to keep up with. Labs for certain classes are also scheduled at a different time than lecture, so it can be easy to forget to go.

Great for these types of students

The University is great for all types of students because there is a great deal of diversity here. Also, I was born completely in the middle of nowhere and coming to the city was a big deal for me. Once I got here, I was surprised how quickly I adjusted.

    Am learning a lot

I just finished my first semester. At the time, it did not really feel like I was learning a ton but that was because I was used to the high school way of learn it and forget it. I am used to having information jammed down my throat. At USC, there is a greater focus on life long learning. I learned things I know I will never forget and that is way more valuable than memorizing facts for no reason.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at the University of South Carolina. I actually did end up going to my back-up school. This meant that I did not really go to school expecting to like it. Now that I am here, though, I can not imagine myself anywhere else. I love my classes; I love the social scene. There are tons of parties, but I am not really big into partying, so I thought that might be an issue. In truth, though, I still find loads of things to do.

    Bang for the buck

I mean college is of course not cheap, but with my scholarships, it is definitely affordable. I feel like I am getting my money's worth from my education because I am not paying for a bunch of classes that I do not want to take. The real rip off is the textbooks because the publishers keep changing the editions so that you can not get them used.

    Tips for prospective students

Fill out the Honors College Application, even if you know you do not want to be in the Honors College. There are a lot more scholarships that they will consider you for if you do this. Because USC is a big school, there is also a big party scene. Be wary of frat guys. I know that this is a stereotype, but sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason. This does not mean avoid them. It simply means use caution in the beginning.

Great for these types of students

There are so many clubs and activities that there is something for everyone, and if we do not have a club for you we invite you to create your own. If you are like me and love being able to walk across campus and meet new people or just like being able to get lost in a crowd without everyone knowing everything about you, then USC is the place for you. If you like the city feel without the drawbacks of a big city, then Columbia is the place for you.

I'm currently a Freshman and so learning about the melting pot of teachers. I have friends that will tell me about how their advisor or teacher aren't very helpful, but I've had the opposite. My teachers do their job well, and if I don't understand, they're more than willing to help outside of class. They've all been really good with communicating, also. USC is a big school, so there is tons of classes for you to choose from. You learn a lot here, and you can learn what you want.

    Am enjoying being here

USC is a great place to be! The atmosphere is amazing. The people here really emulate Southern Hospitality. We almost always make it a point to be nice and hold the door ope, and if you're lost, the people are nice about helping you. The campus is beautiful here. There are so many gorgeous trees, nice places for you to sit and read a book- in the grass, by the fountain, or most dorms have a nice area outside to relax. And the sporting events. Wow. The atmosphere at games are amazing. Even if you have no idea what's going on, you always have a great time, and feel compelled to cheer along side your fellow Gamecock. If nothing else, we're loyal. Win or Lose, we all love our school.

    Bang for the buck

USC is a great all-around school. It has anything you could possibly imagine, and more. Plus, if you think we need something else/new, there's committees you can easily go to to request it. Honestly, it's not cheap going here- but it's worth it if you want the full experience.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have a problem or need help, never hesitate to ask your teacher- that's why they're there, and that's why they have office hours. It might be a little scary to you, but it's always worth.
Also, there is so many different places to get academic help- take advantage of them. If you can't Pass all of your classes, you're probably not putting enough time or effort into it.

Great for these types of students

Everyone and anyone. Trust me, you'll find something you'll like.

There are so many types of classes to take here at USC you could literally make a career out of learning! Based on the demands of the ever-changing workforce, classes are always being modified and added to the curriculum. I am attending for a Business degree and the Moore School of Business has been one of the nation's top business schools in the U.S. for years now. The staff here clearly enjoy what they do and make it a point to prepare you for the demands of the workforce. The great part is many of them have ACTUAL work experience rather than being career students.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the atmosphere at USC. It is really easy to meet people and there is always something to do if you have the time to go. The professors here really care what you have to say and will often go out of their way to accommodate you if you need extra help.

There are so many people you cannot help but find a staggering amount of people with similar interests to your own.

    Bang for the buck

I hate to say it, but USC is getting to be fairly costly. It is difficult to get a straight-up academic scholarship here. There are always tons of activities, as I mentioned before, but USC does have its issues. There is an odd system in place for choosing classes that will often leave you with an unfortunate 8 am course or taking classes you don't really need until your classes open up. A lot of times the office hours are inconvenient if your schedule involves a lot of mid-day classes. It is tough to run a school that is so large so you can expect the bureaucracy to be a little irksome at times, and you will learn, if you didn't already know, life is not always fair.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Commuting is not best way to go if you can help it. Parking is scarce and often a 10 to 15 min walk away if you cannot afford a parking garage.

    2. Don't get carried away and party so much you start to fail out.

    3. There are a lot of great ways to get involved with the school, so don't miss important events like Club day and Rush Week.

    4. Investigate your professors before you sign up for their course!

    5. I cannot stress this enough, plan your work (if you have a job) around your classes, not the other way around! Finishing school is more important!

    6. Try to make friends everywhere on campus! It is easy and they can often provide you with information you may not have otherwise known.

Great for these types of students

Sociable students who can handle distractions. You should also be willing to at least follow Carolina Football.

The University of South Carolina has one of the best business schools in the southeast, on top of the number one International Business School in the country. The faculty and staff are always willing to help you out and do their best to make sure you know the material.

    Am enjoying being here

Columbia is a great place to be. The weather is great (I can wear shorts all the way into December), and there is always something going on. 5 Points goes off pretty much every night, and with around 20% of the student body being Greek, there is never a dull moment.

    Bang for the buck

You get a hell of a lot for your money. Not only do you get access to a massive library (7 stories), WiFi all throughout campus and the biggest gym in the nation, but you are only an hour to an hour and a half away from the beach.

    Tips for prospective students

Make friends with Thomas Cooper early on, it'll help you keep your grades up. Also take U101.

Great for these types of students

    International Business majors
Football fans--there is no better conference than the SEC
Those who wish to affiliate with or join a Greek Organization

    Am learning a lot

My first semester at USC was very educational. Students learn a lot about by what the professor teach in the class, but also a lot about themselves and college life. Everyday I learned something new and the university always has lots of going on, which makes it easy to learn more and meet new people while doing it.

    Am enjoying being here

Time goes by so fast. Busy with classes and friends makes for a beautiful day. By the time the semester was over I thought that it just had begun, but looking back at all the experiences I had I could not imagine having a better time.

    Bang for the buck

The financial aid office is always busy, but very willing to help. They make it very easy to get grants and loans for what isn't already covered. In-state tuition is very affordable, but there are other expenses that they tell you about when you get your bill, such as lab fees of $45 or miscellaneous fees. But it is very worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class and do your assignments. Nothing more than a little dedication is required. Get involved with an organization of interest. University of South Carolina has over 300 organizations and if they do not have something then a student can try to add one. The last thing to remember is to have fun!

    Will learn a lot

This school has a lot to offer enrolled students and those interested. Their engineering programs are some of the best in the nation.

    Will enjoy being here

Not only will you learn a lot but the campus is large and there is much to do and see around it. The college is located in the heart of the capital, which so happens to be right between historical downtown Columbia, The Vista and Five Points. This gives any college student a chance to venture out and enjoy the city.

    Bang for the buck

The campus is large enough to enjoy and located in a great part of the state that any college student will be getting their money's worth for attending.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure the school has the degree or academics that you are looking for. If you are in any sports or athletics, definitely check out those while on campus.

Great for these types of students

If you are very artistic or inclined to your artistic side, then this school and city is perfect for you. If you are athletic or are in any sports then you have come to the right university.

university of south carolina-columbia is one of the more urban colleges of south carolina. it is a very safe and clean environment intertwined with the city of columbia. the students and faculty are there to help and able to successfully aid students in whatever field necessary.

    Tips for prospective students

i encourage you to visit the campus as well as take part in any summer programs they host. that is where i fell in love with carolina and i am positive you will too. those programs are the backbone for recruiting students. if you really want to know what carolina is about, don't read the website or listen to other people. go, and experience it for yourself.

    Academic Rigor

i cannot accurately attest to the academic rigor due to the fact that i will be attending this university. i am not currently attending.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is fun. there's nothing like sitting in the hallway with your floormates just having a good time. the dorms are spacious with plenty of closet space. there's even dressers to accommodate your intimates. of course dorm style varies from residence to residence.

    Food and Dining

there's a special little event every wednesday called chicken finger wednesday. russell house serves chicken fingers and french fries on wednesday. apart from that, the food and dining is sooooo much better than the cafeteria food in high school. there's a wider variety of places to eat and they are spaced around campus so you can pick your own little quiet spot to eat in peace if you aren't social. or you can go to the hot spots like russel house.

    What to do for fun

it's the city of columbia! there's frankies, assorted restaurants, 5 points, concerts, and sporting games

Learning here is inevitable. The course-load surely is a handful, but eventually you'll learn how to manage your time and work evenly. The work here and materials learned in class are very in depth, a requirement of lots of reading expected. You truly do learn a lot from this University! Once you start your first semester here, you'll learn immediately the difference between the high school education and college education.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being on this campus and atmosphere! The campus provides a large variety of organizations, events, and dining. The campus is always peaceful and calm, filled with trees and grass everywhere. The only issue is, there are also plenty of squirrels and birds everywhere on campus, due to the large amount of trees present. But this problem isn't too much of an issue, eventually you'll get used to seeing animals everywhere. The students, staff, and Resident mentors are all friendly and kind. Everyone is nice to one another, and courtesy is always the priority of everyone here at USC.

    Bang for the buck

USC offers plenty of opportunities without costs! Lots of events and shows that are no cost to the students and they offer plenty of free merchandising too as well. Great learning atmosphere, peaceful and beautiful campus, along with great professors, USC is definitely one of a kind. Many people here are surprisingly from out of state, and they fit in just well. USC is a great place to live on campus too, maintenance is surely on top of most situations, trying their best to clean up or resolve any issue within the living residential halls. USC is definitely a great place to be!

    Tips for prospective students

Once you're in college, first of all, take a deep breath! Yes, it is tremendously overwhelming, but after a week or so, you'll begin to grasp the idea of college and get to used to the system. Do not ever panic about any situations, professors are there to work with you, staff workers are there to help you, and other students are there to advise you. Be lucky, you're at a university like USC, most people here are very kind. Make sure to schedule everything in your calenders or day planners, turn everything in on time, and just ask for advice if you need help. Eventually you'll love it here in college too! The secret to success in college is followed by this formula: Sleep + Social life + School work = Ultimate Success! You must ultimately learn, above all else, to manage your time and balance all aspects of this formula! If you're a procrastinator, do not worry, because many of us are. The timings and the scheduling will help you tremendously down the stretch. Remember, whatever you do, school first! And do not forget to get your sleep!

Great for these types of students

USC is great for students who enjoy the outdoors. The students who love the sunny weathers clear blue skies, as well as the ones who can stand the heat of the south. Students who embrace football should enjoy this school as well!

I am in classes that push me to succeed. The teachers that I have now are very helpful through office hours and good criticism.

    Am enjoying being here

It's expected as a freshman to miss being home, so I'm currently going through that phase. I definitely have fun here, especially Gamecock football season! Most of the time, I am glad to be here. It's easy to make friends if you live on campus!

    Bang for the buck

The faculty and staff want you to succeed. If your teacher isn't helping you the way you need, there are teaching assistants and offices that can help you! I haven't had any problems so far here!

    Tips for prospective students

I would try to get into the Capstone program if you can't get into the Honors program. Dr. Hickey, who's in charge, and the other leaders are there for you all the time. They want to get to know each of the Capstone Scholars personally. I'm even going to go skydiving with them on Sunday! They also offer many opportunities and have tons of connections to professionals in the area!

Great for these types of students

Students who like warmer weather (Even though it's beginning to cool down), students who want to be able to study abroad and opportunities to get connected, students who love sports! Ps: We have a top of the line gym with a nice outdoor pool, a few Starbucks and Einstein Bagel's, many dining options, a lot of nightlife, a new club, everything's in walking distance (the stadium has a shuttle), and it's a beautiful campus :) My favorite thing is that Moe's Southwest Grill and THE BEST fro-yo place, Yoghut, are both walking distance from my dorm! I'd advise you to visit soon if you are a prospective student!

    Am learning a lot

The college allows one to have the opportunity to meet various different people from different places, which allows people to learn about different cultures, etc. Also the class sizes differences allow students to learn in a large or small class setting.

    Am enjoying being here

USC offers lots of opportunities to get involved in different organizations such as academic and social clubs. Also the football games are awesome!

    Bang for the buck

For what USC has to offer through academics, etc. I feel the price for the college is fair.

    Tips for prospective students

In order to do well at USC, find a balance between school work and social life. Try to study at least a week in advance for each test, and try to avoid cramming. Also have fun! Join clubs and make friends! Enjoy college!

Great for these types of students

USC offers opportunities for many different types of students to get involved and to enjoy college. This college would suit just about any student.

I believe the University of South Carolina is one of the most elite post-secondary educational institutions in the country based on their academics and because of this, you will learn I lot.

    Will enjoy being here

Someone who doesn't enjoy the beautiful Columbia campus, warm southern weather, and fun and competitive football games is crazy.

    Bang for the buck

The instructors and professors are by far the best I've had, even though some may be more difficult to understand, you can always talk to them to work out a climax to any problems you may be undergoing.

    Am enjoying being here

Coming from a Tech school and transferring to the University of South Carolina is by far one of the best decisions I have made. Tech schools tend to have the same feel as a high school which is why I really enjoyed this transfer. USC has a great campus, in the Horseshoe (which is a huge area that has a walk way that curves around like a horseshoe) there are huge beautiful trees which shade the area which is really great for either studying outside or just hanging out with your friends. Also if you are into photography I can't even list all the areas on here that are spectacular for scenarios you might need. I love being in an urban environment and USC can bring that to me in a great way. The sidewalks tend to stay clean and there really isn't anyone that will bother you in a negative way.

    Bang for the buck

Seeing that admission might be pricey, USC has great programs for in-state students and also students coming from different states. USC is also rated to have the top business school in America! Along with having that, just the scenario is amazing. Game-days are always a blast, be sure to sleep well before then since you will be out and about playing games and having a blast with friends and even making new friends with people around you. Everyone is so friendly which makes USC one of the best universities in my book.

    Tips for prospective students

When walking around the campus, make sure to wear comfortable shoes since this is an urban atmosphere some roads and sidewalks might be uneven. Also when game day comes around make sure you find parking an hour ahead of time rather than 20 minutes before the game.

Great for these types of students

    Urban atmosphere
    Football
    Tailgating
    Night Life
    Business
    Criminal Justice

the university of south carolina - columbia is an incredible place to attend college. between the friendly people, knowledgeable professors, and sec athletics there is no where else anyone would rather be. columbia places usc in a great location, and there is a niche for any student with any interests.

    Tips for prospective students

as a prospective student i would definitely do my research. be sure you know what you're signing up for in terms of housing and parking. be well informed about what you commit to, and if you have questions don't hesitate to ask. take a guided tour given by the university but also try to find someone you know to show you around and take you to a class.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor depends on the classes you enroll in and the effort you put forth. while some basic level classes might not require much effort to pass, the more effort you put forth the more it will help you in higher level courses. always go to class if possible; certain situations come up but unless it's an emergency, class should come first. the reading assignments may seem unnecessary but usually end up being really helpful in preparing for finals and papers.

    Dorm Life

dorm life depends on which residence hall you live in. traditional style dorms (south tower, bates, etc) have hall bathrooms, while suite style dorms (capstone, patterson, etc) have two rooms sharing a bathroom in between. apartment style dorms (those located on the horseshoe and the quads) allow students to have their own room and all share a bathroom in the apartment. dorm preferences depend on your personal need for privacy, but location is key. dorms located near the center of campus usually make it easier to get to and from classes but each dorm has it's benefits.

    Food and Dining

each dorm has kitchens located in it, some on every floor while some only have it every few floors, but most students on campus eat at russell house. russell has a variety of food options, and even the pickiest eater should be able to find something they like. bates, capstone, and honors all have their own smaller dining facilities but it is usually more convenient to eat at russell than go to the outskirts of campus to eat at one of the smaller dining halls.

    What to do for fun

there are a myriad of fun things to do at usc. between clubs and inter-mural sports there should be an extracurricular activity for every type of student. every week there is a different usc sports event being held, football games in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring, with soccer and other sports being held at various times throughout the year. many students go to five points or the vista on the weekends, but russell house offers everything from movies to performers, so everyone should find something that peaks their interest.

    Greek Life

greek life is not only limited to social sororities and fraternities but also service and academic ones. if going greek is important for you, there should be a sorority or fraternity on campus that will fit your needs, but if greek life isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of other activities to become involved in.

    Campus Safety

safety is not usually an issue in the heart of campus but campus police patrol regularly and there are 'panic buttons' located in intervals around campus. pushing the button will light up the blue light at the top and an alarm will sound. campus police can find your location and track it if you push different buttons if you change locations.

The professors are exceptional. They relay material as well as useful insights on subject matter.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something to do on the Columbia campus: academic, social, service. There is something for each individual.

    Bang for the buck

College is an expensive endeavor wherever one may attend. USC does seem to provide a great deal of student support, etc. included in tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

The university is a larger environment to get use to. Don't hesitate to become involved on campus. Attend organization fairs, career fairs, whatever may interest you and become apart of the university. Remember that the college experience should not consist solely of academic endeavors; but use the many opportunities provided by the university to become a well-rounded individual.

Great for these types of students

Business students - the exceptional Darla Moore School of Business
Football fans - football season is a majority of the school's spirit
And anyone who wants to recieve an exceptional education

The professors at the University of South Carolina are willing to take the time to help individual students. They offer many office hours that i found extremely helpful. They give homework in advance so that I was able to visit them during office hours to get the help i needed if I did not understand something in my homework.

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many organizations at the University of South Carolina that is near impossible to dislike attending there. They have clubs from skydiving all the way to religious clubs and professional business clubs. They offer so many oppurtunities through these clubs.

    Bang for the buck

The cost to attend this University is feasable. The University of South Carolina offers academic scholarships for hardworking students as well as many jobs to earn money. Other ways to earn scholarships are offered by the University which also help in attaining tuition money.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should look into different organizations that would better suite them. There is something for everyone and most majors are offered here. The couselors are easy to talk to and all prospective students should be eager to talk to a counselor and feel free to ask any question i promise they don't mind

Great for these types of students

All students can find a niche at the University of south Carolina!

Carolina is a great school. Some of the classes are large but you have to get in those classes and make some study buddies. There are some really fine instructors and only a few who won't work with you to help you.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your professors when you are having trouble in class. Talk to your classmates as well. Don't be afraid to seek help when needed.

    Academic Rigor

If you prepared yourself in high school, you will be all right. If you were slack and only took easy courses or cheated your way through high school, you are gonna find it tough. Some of the colleges are highly competitive so you must be prepared to alter your plans if needed.

    Dorm Life

USC makes room for the Freshmen each year leaving very little dorm space for upper classmen. If you don't have an early registration time you probably won't get a dorm after your first year here.

    Food and Dining

There are many choices in the dining halls. The food is pretty decent for cafeteria food.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of activites on campus and almost anything you want to do in Columbia. I like going to the sports competitions and recitals or performances on campus.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive everywhere. I believe one receives a quality education in the midst of all of the education budget cuts.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Horseshoe is beautiful. It is the perfect place to study, relax, or listen to a small ensemble.

Great for these types of students

If you are out going this place is for you. If you are the quiet type Carolina will help you to come out of your shell.

    Clubs and Activities

USC has numerous clubs. Students go on trips to the mountains, kayaking trips, study abroad trips. If there is something you want and USC does not have it, talk to student affairs and they will probably try to help you form a club to do it!

    Greek Life

I am not Greek but there are lots of greek organizations on campus.

    Campus Safety

There are call boxes all over campus. My car was stolen this year from a parking lot right across the street from my dorm, but I usually feel safe on campus. Of course you should never go places by yourself. There is some safety in numbers.

    Academic Rigor

The professors will challenge you. Don't be scared! The are always there to help. The tutoring center is great the the library is filled with thousands of resources to help!

    Dorm Life

USC has some great dorms all over campus. Living in a dorm is a great way to meet people! It is the ultimate freshman experience! It keeps life interesting.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat on campus. Pretty much anything you want, they have somewhere. The hours are a little annoying but there are also places close to campus to eat.

    What to do for fun

Sporting events, Football games, hang out with friends on the Horseshoe, Five-Points, go to dinner in the Vista, Carolina Production events

    Bang for the buck

USC offers a good quality education and there is something always going on. The financial aid office is there to help you make ends meet.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Clubs and Activities

There are all sorts of clubs and organizations to get involved in. Many people join Sororities and Fraternities and have so much fun! Carolina Productions also puts on shows and bring in comedians and singers. The student organization fair at the beginning of the semester is a great way to see whats offered. Anyone can get involved!

    Greek Life

There are many sororities and fraternity on campus. The Greek Village is located close to campus. Going Greek is a great way to serve the community and meet people from all over!

USC is a very large school, but there are many majors and minors you can choose from because of the large student population. The professors I have gotten thus far are very good at what they do. USC is a great deal especially if you live in-state, the tuition is pretty cost-effective.

    Tips for prospective students

Columbia is really hot during the summer/spring, so be prepared. Make sure you talk to your counselor before changing any of your classes. Wear comfortable shoes because USC is a BIG campus. If you aren't planning to go greek or go crazy in college, stay away from South Tower if at all possible. I did not enjoy my stay there. Make sure you sign up for a learning community when you submit your housing application or else you'll end up in a place that isn't so great. If you're planning to bring your car and park it on campus, beware. It gets very busy and there have been accidents, make sure you brush up on defensive driving before coming to school in the autumn.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on your class and your teacher. I can tell you that the French program at USC is VERY rigorous, and East Asian History class is nothing to smirk about. But these have only been two classes, I will warn you away from taking a 300's level political science class during your freshman year, too. Not a good idea.

    Dorm Life

TWO STARS BECAUSE I STAYED AT SOUTH TOWER! It was unsanitary, old, LOUD, and the walls are pretty much made of PLYWOOD. YOU CAN HEAR EVERYTHING! It's co-ed this year, and I'm not staying there so~~ The two stars are for Patterson and the Quads. They're both very beautiful and clean. You can see the gorgeous upscale highrise that is Patterson from South Tower, and it's just downright depressing.

    Food and Dining

There are a few places on campus that are pretty good: the Colloquim, Einstein's (near Gambrell), and Pandini's. Downstairs Russel isn't bad, but it does get repetitive. There's a lot of fast food upstairs if you like it, and there is a Greek place (it wasn't bad, either), and they also have a Marble Slab.

    What to do for fun

There is a free movie theater in Russell, and we have pretty cool guest speakers, there is also an awesome mall close by, so that's a plus, too!

    Bang for the buck

USC is cheap, and thank god it is. My family is still kind of struggling with the cost, but had I gone to Furman like I wanted, we would be in an exponential amount of trouble.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are some ghost stories surrounding the campus, especially in the horseshoe. The university was turned into a hospital for the Union during the Civil War and there was this Confederate nurse who poisoned her Northern patients. There's a specific dorm room, but I don't recall which. If you're a guy from the north, you'll see her watching you some nights. That. Is. Creepy.

Great for these types of students

social, planning to go greek, don't mind lots of people around you ALL THE TIME, sports lovers, those who don't have a ton of money, or International Business majors. Of course it works for others, too, but this is the best case scenario.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lots and lots of clubs, but I don't think they have a Model UN which makes me sad because I was planning to join.

    Greek Life

Greek life is a HUGE deal on campus. You can still be someone if you aren't greek, but it helps with the social aspect of college.

    Campus Safety

Cops are on campus VERY often, I've seen six people get arrested during my second semester alone. I feel pretty safe~

Education wise USC is definitely top-notch. But great campuses are often older, particularly the buildings. Though they are attempting to remodel its has ALOT of older buildings. The people are great too, most, big schools only feel that way for a short while, don't count them out because you are scared!

    Tips for prospective students

Bring A lot of decoration for your room, most were modeled after a jail cell decor. Freshmen are usually taken care of when it comes to receiving dorms, but the style is often run-down. 8 a.m's are no-nos if you didn't get up in high school no way in college! If you like walking you will loovvveee it here. You will walk regardless if you live on campus, parking is tiggghhht.

    Academic Rigor

Most teachers that I've had have a lenient attendance policy which I have stretched to the limit. But go to class on the first day to find out what there policy is before deciding to never show up.

    Dorm Life

haha, old buildings crammed with college kids, there are newer and more remodeled dorms, but getting into those takes skill especially since there are always more students that housing! Its dirty and disgusting, but you meet the most amazing people and learn alot about everything and everyone...including yourself

    Food and Dining

Russell House may seem like the ish when first arriving but it gets tiring and a sure way to the freshy 15. There are many places to eat try them all no matter how far away it may be. Nothing will fit on meal plan ANYWAY have CHASH at all times. P.S. anyone can eat in the honors diner!

    What to do for fun

Party's all day starting every thursday, sometimes before, but there is something for everyone, check out all the registered clubs there are hundreds, join intramural teams if you think you will miss playing sports Frats and Soros are HUGE here there is one for everyone! There is always an event going on just find some that might seem interesting (even if its only a little)

    Bang for the buck

Tuition includes a lot of things make sure you take advantage of the programs and other things you have already paid for. Buy books off campus, and gamecock gear its expensive in the book store, and your going to wish you had that money later. Its older and more traditional in all aspects for sure!

    Greek Life

HUGE! greek life allows you access to many other opportunities and events on campus!

USC boasts a wonderful Honors College, great student life, many popular study abroad programs, very involved Greek life, and Columbia is just an all around fun location to be a college student!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to showcase your talents, and get as specific as you can on your application (future career goals/professional interests, even if you aren't sure what you want to major in yet). USC prides itself in their strong alumni base, so if you have connections to the university/South Carolina in general, don't be afraid to show that off either!

    Academic Rigor

I found the Honors College to be very stimulating, but the rest of my classes were pretty average. Some really easy courses, others more challenging, but overall very manageable.

    Dorm Life

If you are a freshman, live on campus, hands down! You will meet so many people without even trying to, and will definitely get the best college experience possible by being on campus in the middle of things!

    Food and Dining

The Russell House has it all; from a decent variety of fast food chains, sushi, stir-frye, build-your-own smoothie, and even a bakery, anyone can find something to chow down on. Patterson, Columbia and Bates (dorms) all have their own dining halls as well, and there are plenty of other options around campus (Starbucks, Jazzman's in the BA, the Colloquim Cafe, a snack canteen in the Humanities office building, etc.).

    What to do for fun

Football and baseball games, and of course 5 Points, the nearby bar/food district and the heart of USC's social life. There are always events going on with Greek life and other campus organizations, and intramurals/sports galore at the Strom and Blatt PE centers. There are many museums and galleries within walking distance to campus, and the state zoo! Columbia is also less than two hours from the mountains, beach (Charleston), Charlotte, or Savannah.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining is good, there are a lot of options to accomodate those will all kinds of appetite. the university of south carolina is a large university that spans a broad list of majors. while the school is large, each individual major and college focuses on their students intently and helps them reach their academic potential and get on the right track. usc is a quality institution that gives all students the tools necessary to enjoy their college experience as well as prepare themselves to be active members of society.

    Tips for prospective students

take the time to visit the campus and the specific college that you want to attend. each branch of the university has specific requirements for admission and for graduation. learn about your intended major and what will be required of you, and don't hesitate to meet some professors and learn about the process. also take the time to explore the campus itself and learn about what you can be doing outside the classroom. there are numerous clubs to join, sports to play and many other activities around town and the university.

    Academic Rigor

the university of south carolina has some very highly acclaimed majors such as international business and exercise science. both programs have rigorous schedules and require a lot of time and effort and have difficult courses. all majors, however, have their own courses that have difficulty and require a lot of time and effort in order to succeed in them. with that said, there are classes at the university that have a high rate of a's and b's that people generally take to fill a schedule, but, with that said there are courses with high fail rates as well.

    Dorm Life

in my experience, the best friends i have made at usc are from my freshman dorm. we have spent countless hours just hanging out and going around doing different things as well as studying together. dorm life is so vital to the college experience and the university of south carolina is no exception with its numerous dorms open to all students and required for freshmen students.

    Food and Dining

there are many dining halls on campus for students to choose from for meals. the main dining hall is in the university union and has a wide variety of food choices. in the main hall there is a grill, filled with burgers and the like, a food line for a wide variety of meals, and a healthy food like and a salad bar. if these do not fit your liking, there is a pizza and pasta restaurant called pandini's for students as well, however, if you are more inclined to fast food there is a burger king, a taco bell, a pizza hut, a chick-fil-a and a greek place for you to choose from in the dining hall. also around campus there are two einstein brothers bagels, a starbucks, and a fresh deli alongside a marbleslab creamery and freshens for dessert choices. the food choices are endless!

    What to do for fun

there are many things to do for fun at usc. there are well set up intramural programs at usc, spanning from football to softball to sand volleyball, the choices are endless. there are also numerous clubs to join for social aspects for your major you are studying. if you like to watch sports the gamecocks are back to back national champions in baseball and are a powerhouse football program that always draw large crowds. the other sports programs are here to watch as well such as basketball, soccer, and swimming and diving. if you are into the party scene, five points and the vista are two regions of columbia that have a lot of restaurants and clubs that draw huge crowds during the night as well as during the day for shopping and eating. not to mention that this is south carolina, where you are an hour and a half from the mountains and some of the best beaches in hilton head and myrtle beach.

    Bang for the buck

the university has a lot on campus for the students that allow them to succeed in all of the aspects of their lives with free tutoring programs, and many resources to help them improve grades. also the university of south carolina recently built a huge wellness and fitness center for students to use to keep themselves in top shape or just lay out by the pool.

usc is a fantastic place to be--in the middle of the city within walking distance of three downtown areas (five points, main street, the vista) but also a peaceful campus with lots of green spaces. another thing that makes usc so great (and this one is important for a lot of us): they give away so many scholarships! there is no reason to be lonely or bored with hundreds of student organizations and even fun classes for credit; so far, i have taken backpacking, west african dance, jewelry-making, and archery to name a few!

    Tips for prospective students

it is a large college and unfortunately, all the different offices are not the best at communicating with each other. don't be afraid to check up on them to make sure everything is going smoothly. stay proactive and make sure you know what you want so that they can help you know what you need to do to get it.

    Academic Rigor

of course, you will be expected to attend classes, do the work, and study. but there are different levels of academic rigor: general admission, capstone scholars, honors college, etc.

    Dorm Life

even though it may seem like a lot of money, i would definitely recommend living on campus. i never had huge problems, just know that it will not be quiet and serene all the time in a dorm. but the community you build will last at least all four years of college, and the convenience of being a five-minute walk from one of your classes will really pay off when 8am classes come around.

    Food and Dining

there are a lot of options on campus. chik-fil-a and pizza hut were my favorites freshman year. but i also fell in love with einstein bros and cafe verde (healthier but delicious options and its open til 3am most days). there are plenty of options relatively close to campus as well. beezer's sandwiches are the bomb.

    What to do for fun

there is five points for the weekends if that's your kind of thing. but there are also a bunch of parks and the horseshoe for nice days. frisbee and naps in the sun are very popular (and only occasionally do these two activities interrupt each other...). russell has free movies every weekend. there are various shopping options as well. downtown stores are fun and harbison has a good mall and other stores if you have a car. but my favorites are the thrift stores in and around columbia

    Bang for the buck

sports events are free!! or they are at least included in tuition. don't just go to the football games (but do go: they're awesome and unlike anything you've every experienced). also check out soccer, volleyball, swimming and diving meets, etc.
more things included: the strom and blatt athletic centers (with swimming pools and a rock wall); ipad checkout at the library; fairly large film collection for check-out (not just boring educational ones either)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

if you want to be outside in the gorgeous sc weather, but there are too many people on the horseshoe for you, walk around the perimeter and duck into any of the numerous side gardens. they have fountains and sundials and benches and solitude for thinking.

    Clubs and Activities

lots of student organizations and clubs: from skydiving, outdoor recreation, and rugby to green room productions (theatre) and green living (environment)

    Campus Safety

it is an urban campus and there are dangers and crime associated with that. but there are emergency call boxes literally always nearby. and there are great late-night escort and transportations systems for going between campus buildings. be smart and you'll be fine.

usc has a gorgeous campus that is always buzzing with events and fun things to do. the marine science program here is incredible and the professors really do make sure you're keeping up in class. the amount of different classes offered is immense and there really is something for everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

my advice would be to meet as many people as you can freshman year in your dorm, in your classes, or even just on campus. college is a lot more fun when you have good friends to share the experience with. freshman year is easy, no matter what you think. the work gets a lot harder, so don't slack off because it is your first year. use study groups, they really do work. and, as cliche as this may be, take in every moment of your experience. this can be the best, or the worst 4 years of your life. college is what you make it.

    Academic Rigor

i truly believe this depends on the major selected. as a marine science major, i can say that the course work is not easy, nor always enjoyable. it is a lot of hard work and many long hours in the library. there are going to be classes that you may not be interested in, but are required, so that makes it more difficult. i don't think college is easy no matter where you go, but the professors here definitely push your limits.

    Dorm Life

freshman year in the dorms could be great, or horrible. it is so important that you get along with your roommate because that can make or break your year. we had several issues with heated water and clear water in our shower. ladybugs also got in our room, due to our window being duct taped shut. however, it was nice compared to other dorms i have seen at other campuses. the rooms were large enough to share, but have your own space, and overall, i'm glad i made the option to live in the dorm i chose.

    Food and Dining

food is actually pretty good on campus. there are fast food options that are always a safe option. hot line is usually avoided, but there are so many other options. greek food, italian, mongolian, salad bar, grill, soup, sandwiches, and pizza to name a few. usc definitely has a variety, and the meal plan covered the meals, for the most part, without going over.

    What to do for fun

two words. football season. there is nothing better. football games and tailgating are huge at this school. with the energy of the crowd and the atmosphere of the stadium, it is impossible not to have a good time. this applies to baseball season as well. campus hosts great concerts, movies, club sports, and organizations for literally everything. every single person can find something that they enjoy doing on campus. and if not, there's always columbia's nightlife.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

5 points is the number one place to be on the weekends. it's a 5 minute walk from campus and it is where all college students hang out for nightlife. tiger burn is a big tradition here, as clemson is our rival school. the horseshoe is the best spot on campus. it is the historical part of usc and it's a gorgeous grassy area surrounded by the prettiest buildings on campus. it's a great place to toss a frisbee around, study, or just hang out with friends.

    Clubs and Activities

there is something for everyone. the organization fair holds boths that go on and on. everything is different and there are so many fun things to choose from. you can be a part of scuba club, or greek life, or religious groups, or any and every club sport. and if the organization or group is not created, it's so easy to grab a few friends and get your own idea started.

    Greek Life

greek life is major on this campus. i, myself, am not a part of this as it is pretty expensive. however, my roommate is, and she adores greek life. greek village is gorgeous and the houses are amazing to look at. everyone does have a place in greek life if they want it, they just have to search for the right one. greek life is very involved with the community and holds many fun social events as well.

    Campus Safety

i have never felt unsafe on campus during the day. however, at night is a different story. never ever walk alone at night. this applies to any college. columbia is not the safest city, and if you are not careful, you may find yourself in trouble. pepper spray is always a good thing to have on you. however, campus does take precautions like emergency lights and police on campus. it's mostly when you step off campus that you really have to watch out.

the university of south carolina is a well-rounded university that can suit any potential student. the campus is located in a fun, growing city that is enjoyable by anyone whether they are going to a football game or heading down to five points or the vista. it also contains a variety of different majors and is perfect for anyone wanting to have an admirable career.

    Tips for prospective students

if you are a prospective student wanting to attend the university of south carolina, the first thing you should do is get a tour from a student who currently attends the campus. they will show you how much they love it from a hands-on perspective and be as honest as possible. one should also research which school they exactly want to be in. there are so many different possibilities for an education at usc and many of the colleges intertwine in ideas and studies and it is imperative that one examines each college carefully. and importantly they should attend a carolina football game. this is how i fell in love with usc's amazing atmosphere, spirit and energy. anyone who walks into williams brice stadium and glances over at the student section will realize how much fun it is to attend the school.

    Academic Rigor

there is academic rigor at usc because there are so many different education opportunities outside of the classroom. not only are classes challenging, a student has numerous ways to educate themselves such as study abroad, internships, non-profit volunteer work, clubs, community service, and hands on learning.

    Dorm Life

at usc there are a variety of different living options. a student can choose a co-ed, or single gender dorm, and has the option to make their environment as open as possible. columbia hall is a open co-ed dorm where boys and girls are walking around the halls and intermingling, and patterson is a all girls dorm where ones living environment is more exclusive. there are also quads and apartment style living for those who decide to live in more separate living conditions. overall if one desires certain living arrangements they can find exactly what they are looking for on the campus.

    Food and Dining

the university of south carolina is surrounded by a fairly large city so finding delicious food is not difficult. five points has many bars as well as andy's deli, harpers, and yesterdays which serves great food for college students. and the vista, right next door, is filled with all sorts of restaurants and dining any one could enjoy. the university itself offers a great meal plan and has many little cafes and the russel house has a food court serving pizza hut, chick-fil-a and many more. they also have the mccutchen house which is a small little on campus restaurant put on by the students themselves. where they run the restaurant, make the food and ultimately serve the students.

    What to do for fun

it's not hard to find something fun to do at university of south carolina. in the fall the football games and tailgates are some of the most fun you'll have at usc. the games are exciting and entertaining and the tailgates before and after become just a fun celebration. the greek life frequently hires bands and have them perform after the games, and the frat lots in general are a big outdoor party for all. also five points is the source of a lot of fun. they have clubs and bars that include dancing and just having a general great time every weekend. regardless there is always something to do around campus.

    Bang for the buck

to really fully enjoy the usc experience one needs to get as involved as possible. join the greek life, participate in all the clubs, attend every single game as possible, enjoy the functions, etc. there is always something more to be a part of on this campus and in this community.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the horseshoe is the most famous location on the campus. it is a large open u-shaped field and is a very relaxing area for anyone to study or just enjoy outside. there is an excellent restaurant on top of the capstone building that rotates as you eat and allows one to see the entirety of columbia from an aerial view. our baseball time is also back to back national champs and our football team had 11 wins in a season last year.

Great for these types of students

this campus is wonderful for any type of student. if you are a studious introvert the classes are challenging and perfect for you. if you are an outgoing always looking for fun student the campus and environment is perfect for you. it's a growing and exciting community yet its small enough to where you can make a difference and thrive in it. any student willing to be active and engaged in their college experience would love usc.

    Clubs and Activities

theres layers and layers and layers of campus activities. student government is very prevalent within the university and there is a club that will fulfill any students interests.

    Greek Life

the greek life at usc is a blast and its a big part of the university. the fraternities have their own little community or houses to reside in and the sororities are always hosting functions. there is a great sense of pride and competition in the greek life but in south carolina it has a more positive approach. overall the greek life aspires to have fun as well as give back to the community.

    Campus Safety

the campus is surrounded by call boxes and alert systems that if in danger one could press and have immediate safety. usc has many police officers speckled about the campus to ensure utmost safety and the city of columbia in general has an outstanding police and community watch.

    Tips for prospective students

as new student, the first time you make your schedule you need to have a map of the campus with you to make sure you can get between your classes in time, especially if you are an engineering student since the engineering building is far from the majority of the other classroom buildings.. if you have classes back to back, then you have 15 minutes to get between classes.

    Academic Rigor

you are eased into college classes. the 100 level classes are fairly simple and the classes become progressively more challenging with the level you are at.

    Dorm Life

the older dorms smell bad and you hear horror stories of the ways they are falling apart. however, the university has a lot of plans to renovate many of the residence halls. patterson was renovated last year and it is beautiful inside. the honors college is very nice as well. there are plans to renovate the women's quad soon. i do not know if there are plans to renovate mcbryde, an all male dorm in desperate need of renovation.

    Food and Dining

everything except the grand market place, the main place for dining, is pretty good.

    What to do for fun

there are a lot of clubs around between five points and the vista. columbia is very historic. so, i like to take my friends on ghost tours or visit the state house. there are several museums in columbia which are free on sundays. there are also several parks, a couple along the river. all of these places i mentioned are within walking distance. there are a lot of clubs on campus as well as intramural sports. we also have two gyms. the strom thurmond wellness and fitness center has the tallest rock wall in the sec. in addition there are groups such as carolina productions which hosts a lot of events. they have free movies every weekend that are in the in between stage between the theaters and being released on dvd. carolina productions also hosts comedians and other guest speakers, such as frank abagnale and a hypnotist.

    Bang for the buck

usc is the least expensive school i found in my search for a college. it still is not cheap, but it's the cheapest if you do not have any scholarships.

    Am learning a lot

I have completed my first semester at USC with all A's and one B. I really enjoyed all my classes and learned a lot! Two of my classes were small (less than 20), two were medium sized (around 80), and one was a large lecture class (around 200). However all of my professors, no matter what the size) were willing to work with the students. I was able to make personal connections with many of them, and I know that in the future they will help me if needed.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE being a Carolina Gamecock. I love walking around campus and meeting new people. I have also thoroughly enjoyed attending our home football games. Being in the student section and going wild when we score has been the highlight of my semester. I have also really enjoyed taking advantage of some of the school sponsored activities such as a FREE Josh Turner concert for students only, How great is that? I really look forward to the upcoming semester at USC.

    Bang for the buck

I think that Carolina gives us a lot for the cost of tuition. Unlike many schools, we do not pay for football tickets and many extracurricular activities. This is made possible by a fee included in our tuition. Attending college is, however, very expensive; more so than I had anticipated.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all the opportunities Carolina offers. Go to strom, a soccer game, greek life, intramural sports, student government, pep rallies, homecoming activities, everything! Don't be afraid to try something new. Be outgoing so you can meet as many people as possible; enjoy the southern hospitality!

Great for these types of students

Although South Carolina is quite a large school, it is very easy to create a personal academic experience if you desire. Academic advising is very important, and advisers in all majors are very helpful and you easily forget that you are one of thousands that they are advising. I have had professors that have doctorates from Brown and Penn State, and from all corners of the United States, exposing me to various types of people and experiences. From a Lady Gaga class to some of the most esteemed International Business courses in the world, USC is an enriching place to be.

    Am enjoying being here

I am from New England, and coming to the University of South Carolina was a challenge and adventure I was certainly looking forward to. I was not intimidated by the culture shock I was told that I would expirence. Perhaps I should've taken this advise more seriously because it is very different in many ways. However, I wouldn't trade being here for anything. Being from out of state and not knowing a soul was certainly a challenge, but there are so many students from all across the globe that it is hard to feel alone. This time in your life is meant for changing and growing and figuring out life, and USC is a great place to do it. And oh yea, also having a crazy amount of fun, all the time. There is always something going on.

    Bang for the buck

Just check the credentials. USC is constantly ranked int the top 50 by various college review organizations as one of the best-value universities in the USA. I can say that is certainly an earned recognition. Considering rising tuition costs, this SEC, tier 1, nationally recognized school has been able to provide the best without charging the most. Also, for those who did graduate from a SC high school, unlike myself, the state does offer some really good scholarships.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. If you're looking for a large school, with over 20,000 people and a great collegiate atmosphere, USC has it.
    2. If you are not from the south, understand that like most regions, it comes with it's own culture. From food, language, to attire.
    3. Be prepared for the HEAT.
    4. USC has something for everybody. Get involved.
    5. Visit the school before you make a decision. That is when I fell in love.

Great for these types of students

USC is a school with such a large student body, that it is not difficult to find people with similar interests as yourself. The athletics here are crazy, from our SEC football Saturday nights, to our 2x World Series Champion baseball team, if you're a sports fan USC is your place. If you enjoy warm weather and palm trees, you'll be in your element. I can say whole-heartily that USC provides a lot of diversity and a lot of opportunity. There is something for you; no matter who you are.

The University of South Carolina has so many majors it would be hard for me to believe they didn't have one. They also have so many different classes that it's impossible not to find some you are very interested in. For example, one of my friends has a deaf sister. I love her to death and have learned to partially understand things she says in sign language but I want to be able to fully communicate with her, which is why I'm so happy USC offers a sign language class.

    Will enjoy being here
