Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot The sciences and mathematics at UVM are challenging and I learned a lot from the professors. Overall, the other classes were moderately challenging and the professors were knowledgeable.
Did enjoy being here Burlington is an awesome city/town and the people are very welcoming. Partying is big at UVM, but even if you don't party there is something for everyone every night of the week!
Bang for the buck UVM is expensive for out-of-state students, but the facilities, faculty, and food are worth the high cost.
Tips for prospective students Get a tour of the school and spend a night if you can. Talk to a department head in the field of study you're interested in. Also, introduce yourself to an admissions officer; they're very nice and it will help you along the way.
Great for these types of students Laid back, academically focused, athletic

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot For the most part, my classes are fairly challenging. They are definitely manageable, but definitely not easy either. They are at a good level of difficulty I'd say, where I am learning plenty but it's usually not overwhelming or underwhelming. I'm a bio major taking solely math and sciences this semester though aside from badminton, so I can't speak of the language, social studies, etc. classes, though I have heard that they are similar.
Am enjoying being here It is really nice up here. The weather gets a bit chilly and extreme obviously, but overall it's beautiful and very scenic up here, one of the most picturesque places I've ever been. There is a fantastic view wherever you go and it changes, so if you are into landscape painting or photography this is a place for you. The people here also tend to be very friendly and personable, so you rarely feel lonely. They can be a little much at time, but I think anytime you group this many people of our age together things will get overwhelming at one point or another.
Bang for the buck I would say being here is worth it, and I pay a lot for the out of state tuition. I don't regret coming here and would not demand a refund, it has been a valuable and enjoyable life experience for the most part, which a good mixture of activities and academics. It is definitely pricey for an out-of-state student though, so make financial aid and finding scholarships a top priority.
Tips for prospective students Bring clothing for any type of weather. Heatwaves and cold streaks can and do happen at any time. Also bring umbrellas and rain gear. And definitely a camera, there are so many great views that you'll want to capture, especially if you go down to Lake Champlain which I definitely recommend. The lake and Church Street are two of the best things Burlington has to offer, you can always find something to do there and it's within walking distance though you can still take a bus if you don't want to walk. So spend time exploring the city, it has a lot to offer. And get out there and get to know everyone you can, you probably won't like everyone you meet but there are a lot of interesting personalities and different perspectives you will find. There are downsides of course though, it tends to be quite noisy and not all the dorms are the most comfortable or roomy, but those are easy enough to adjust to.
Great for these types of students Open-minded students do better here. I won't lie, it is mainly hipsters here, but you will definitely find someone like yourself here if you try hard, which you probably won't have to. People who like to have fun thrive here though, not to say that you won't thrive as well if you are more studious and industrious, but many people here like to party.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The science classes are pretty good if you get a good professor. I thought a lot of the introductory classes were comparable to the AP level in high school. You learn a lot of good skills in the lab.
Am enjoying being here Burlington is a great town, and there are a lot of things to do (music, movies, clubs). It's also near great mountains (Jay, Stowe, Mad River, Sugarbush). The bus system that runs through the county is pretty extensive (though rarely on time) which makes life without a car do-able.
Bang for the buck It's a lot of money for out of state students. For me, the financial aid was great the first year and hasn't been as good since forcing me to take out private loans in the five figure range. The campus is beautiful though.
Tips for prospective students Be aware that public transportation home or elsewhere can be a nightmare. Amtrak is actually located in a nearby town (in Essex Jct.) and only one line goes through (The Vermonter). It's also really expensive and time consuming. The airport is about a 40 minute walk from campus or you can take the 1 bus (not a good plan the day before break because the buses are too full and some drivers are picky about your luggage size). If you buy your tickets way ahead of time, they aren't too expensive. Get a good winter coat too.
Great for these types of students Basically everyone. UVM has a really laid back atmosphere that is very accepting of all different types of people. There are groups for everyone! There are a lot of different types of people on campus and since the student body is so large, you'll definitely find people with similar interests.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot This school is amazing, and not only for the great classes and professors they have- they are one of the most green campuses in the country. You don't only learn in your classes, you learn life skills like recycling. Also, UVM is not the kind of school that teaches to the tests- it's not what you think, it's HOW you think. Here you learn critical thinking skills. to help you in whatever career you choose.
Will enjoy being here People at UVM are so friendly. Plus, the area is great- Church Street has the best shops and there's always something to do. Also, UVM is not the only college in the area- Champlain College is right next door and St. Michael's college is nearby so you can make friends not only within the school but with the other people in the area.
Bang for the buck Personally UVM has been very generous with scholarships and loans. I had been fearful that I wouldn't be able to go to UVM because of the high expense and, from what I'd heard about the school, they tend to prefer people in state. Fortunately this wasn't the case and most of the tuition will be paid for and the rest in loans.
Tips for prospective students You will never be able to understand the full potential of this school unless you come up to visit, so definitely do so.
Great for these types of students UVM is great for someone who wants to be active. By active, I mean active in anything- if you are serious about LGBT rights, they have many groups which fight for rights. If you want to learn about recycling, there is so much to do there to learn how you can help. And if there's something you want to do that hasn't been started yet it's so easy to start your own movement.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are generally engaging, but I would recommend investigating your professors before signing up for their class. They can make the class and seem to be hits or misses. You WILL learn something IF you actually apply yourself, otherwise you could probably get by without doing so.
Am enjoying being here The academics are good and the general population is accepting and friendly. The living situation varies by dorm and your personal environment, and it can get a little grungy. Overall, it can be an enjoyable place if you want it to be.
Bang for the buck It's a state school which means cheaper tuition. Cheaper tuition is good. The overall quality of the school does not really show its price tag. Everything else (i.e. books, food, fun) is just as expensive as anywhere else.
Tips for prospective students UVM is a good school in an adorable town with a wonderful landscape. Your experience will be what you make of it, so have fun but study hard and try to learn something.
(If you are concerned with housing [i.e. you want to have the option to study in your dorms and have your own sanitary bathroom], try to get into U. Heights via acceptance into the Honors College or Green Housing.)Great for these types of students Hippies, party-ers, and the environmentally-conscious are especially prevalent, but there really is a variety of people here, and most are accepting of divergent others.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is a lot of diversity in the courses available and pretty much everyone can fond something to interest them. Though some professors are better than others, they all are intent on seeing you succeed and there is always a source of help you if you need it. There are certain requirements per individual college, but every student has to take diversity courses.
Am enjoying being here The campus, and the city of Burlington, is beautiful. There are numerous clubs to join and plenty of random student/school-organized activities. There is a source of night life that suites partiers. And for those who choose not to partake in typical college parties, there is ALWAYS something going on on campus or in town.
Bang for the buck The out of state cost for this school ranks with the Ivies. Scholarships are available but other financial aid, such as work study positions, are declining.
Tips for prospective students Should have initiative and be ready to work. Especially in lower level classes at a large school, students have to discipline themselves to get their work done because the teachers cannot keep track.
Great for these types of students Laid back personalities who appreciate being outside in the landscape of Vermont.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors have amazing backgrounds and are enthusiastic and eager to teach.
Am enjoying being here UVM is a great community, you're in the heart of Burlington, one of this country's greatest small cities. Yet you are surrounded by rural Vermont. There is an unending list of extracurriculars in addition to everything there is to do in the city.
Bang for the buck One of the more expensive schools, yet definitely worth it, there are a lot of great financial aid opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Visit, take the tours, then spend some time on your own looking around. Ask questions, if you can't see yourself at a school, move on to the next one.
Great for these types of students A UVMer enjoys life. Students here participate in school events, they hang out with their friends, and they want to learn. You must like snow! People who come to this school get a great education and have a good time and a great college experience.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My classes not only provide me with a lot of knowledge, but my professors are enthusiastic about teaching as well. The learning environment is wonderful and I have learned so much in a short time.
Am enjoying being here It is a friendly and interactive environment; everyone is nice to you and there's always something going on here. You can always either find something exciting to do or you can always find a place to relax and have quiet.
Bang for the buck No college is perfect. I'm an out-of-state student, so my rating's a little harsher. I feel I am pretty much getting my money's worth in education, but the food is a bit overpriced. If you get the points meal plan, get the more points one.
Tips for prospective students Don't be intimidated by the size of the campus and student body; this is a large college with a small feel. (Just think: you can meet one new person every day until you graduate!) Also there's ALWAYS something going on and a TON of clubs and activities for every type of person. I've actually found that I want to join TOO many clubs :)
Great for these types of students This college is great for students who like to be alone; it's not a small college where everybody knows each others business. BUT you can join a program in which you live and go to class with the same people. It's a just a great place to be for almost every type of person.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a French major and I find myself excited about my course load. I learn something new every day. I leave my french classes exhilarated and often enjoy study for my classes. I can't express enough how much I love the french department at UVM!
Am enjoying being here UVM has an amazing campus with a million and one things to do. If you ever find yourself bored all you have to do is send an email or attend a meeting and poof you've joined a club. UVM is also nestled in one of the most amazing towns I've ever been to. I love Burlington! The people, the shops, the waterfront, the laid back atmosphere...it's just wonderful.
Bang for the buck I can't really say yet as I am still attending UVM. I do know that if you are and out of state student, like myself, expect hefty loans and debt. In the end, my advice is to look up lots of scholarships because you can't pass up the chance to attend UVM.
Tips for prospective students Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships! I would also advise prospective students to come prepared for harsh winters. It can get frigid. The winters are, however, magical at times and the beautiful Burlington Spring and fall more than make up for the harsh winters.
Great for these types of students Great for outdoorsy, compassionate, friendly, dedicated, hardworking, fun-loving, open-minded students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This school is a nice school but not for everyone because it has many unappealing aspects that don't fit some people's preferences. It is a semi-large university in a great 'city' but is really expensive. The students can be a little close minded if you don't share the same mindset of them and like to party a little too much. It's a nice education but a little too hyped because you can get the same education for a fraction of the price else-where.
Tips for prospective students you have to make an effort to fit in and do well. Nothing falls to place on its own here. Also, I would try and get involved on campus as much as you can! not as many students are active members of the community as they should be. bring warm clothing because it gets very chilly. Also, if you want true diversity, do not come here. The same kids apply and get in, even with the semi-variation, the student body is still a little too similar, and if you don't fit the mold, you are a little bit alienated. UVM is a little too similar to the high school vibe, so take that into consideration because it can be a little too cliquey and a lot of drama occurs in many groups of friends, so be cautious who you make friends with (hence why it is cliquey, the drama).
Academic Rigor Some majors are harder than others. if it is science or math related, it is pretty hard but most other majors aren't too bad.
Dorm Life The rules are relaxed for the most part but if you get caught drinking or with drugs, it is a complicated process you have to go through so be smart. I would suggest living on Redstone because it the dorms are spacious and the dorm-life here is probably the best and most open. Slade is the live-in co-op and is really awesome so try and apply to live here.
Food and Dining It isn't that good at all. For being in Vermont, they don't really have many sustainable options and aren't as vegan friendly as they should. Unlimited dining is really bad so go with the points choice. Simpson is the best unlimited and very new aged. Attend the weekly Slade potlucks because they are awesome and you meet so many awesome people!
What to do for fun Party, drink, and smoke a lot. There are also concerts and theaters that are constantly playing something so attend those options! I would suggest getting involved on campus for your first two required years you must live on campus. Most students leave campus weekends to snowboard/ski so you better get into mountain life.
Bang for the buck So expensive and overpriced, in-state and out of state are both too much for what you get! A major reason I had to transfer was because I just could not afford it anymore because they were increasing tuition by an intense amount and cutting a lot of grants awarded (I mean they still have loans but many accumulate by interest)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus naked bike ride! at the end of each semester, students frolic around a designated zone naked. Most students get extremely smashed to do this and end up falling or getting hurt, but be smart. The spring one is usually a lot warmer because in the winter, it's been in the negatives when they were hosting the naked bike ride.
Great for these types of students people who ski or snowboard. wanna-be hippies, hipsters, stoners, partiers, white upper middle class kids from NJ, NY, MA, and CT. artsy kids. bros and biddies. science majors. people who want to make a difference *disclaimer: who usually don't do anything...* --> the students are diverse but are pretty much the same privileged kids you've already met in high school.
Clubs and Activities They aren't very prevalent on campus, it's such a shame that they aren't as active as they should be.
Greek Life Lame! don't join or go to their parties. Too many bad incidents occur at the parties, girls get roofied sometimes and taken advantage of (just in one year, I heard of about 8 different cases). Some have been actually been getting shut down for hazing, under aged consumption of alcohol, and other incidents
Campus Safety There isn't a lot of crime on campus from what I could tell but there was some. There wasn't ever any rapes during my time there but there was theft and the groper who would wear a hoodie and grope woman and run away at obscure times during the night.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is an extremely wide variety of courses offered at UVM. Many are strenuous, but the professors are always willing to help and make an effort to be available in and outside of class. On the other hand, there are a variety of very entertaining and rewarding courses. For example, I took a SCUBA course last semester and am now certified for life!!
Am enjoying being here On top of the great courses offered at UVM, the people and environment create a wonderful atmosphere. When you first arrive you will be warmly welcomed by a diverse community, and soon find your own niche. There is also plenty to keep you entertained on campus and in the town of Burlington. Whether partying on the weekend or just looking for a quite week-night activity UVM is the perfect place!
Bang for the buck I am an in state student, but most of my friends are from around the country. Although they have all fully enjoyed their time at UVM, it has been somewhat of a financial struggle.
Tips for prospective students If you have any choice in where you live first semester I would recommend the Red Stone campus; It is a very social area and there are beautiful lawns/greens to play games or just spend time with friends. All of the housing at UVM has similar opportunities, but I really enjoyed my time on red stone and think it is worth looking into. Also, look into a variety of majors and don't be afraid of starting as an undeclared student.
Great for these types of students Outdoor-lovers, environmentalists, animal science majors (there are many well-recognized opportunities for large animals), snowboarders/skiers

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot While general classes are usually packed lecture halls, smaller more specific classes give the opportunity for discussion and for one on one teacher instruction. Even in the large lectures, Professors make an effort to learn your name, participating a lot helps them with that, and of course your grade. Like any college, there is a great deal of work and reading to keep up with, but I find the readiness of discussion incredibly helpful in processing and remembering the work I've done.
Am enjoying being here Burlington is the perfect college town. Church street is a short walk down hill (you can always catch the shuttle back up!) and acts like a smaller and more laid back version of Quincy Market in Boston. The views are amazing, both of Lake Champlain, the Green Mountains, and the general landscape of campus.
Bang for the buck If you are not a Vermonter, you'll be paying borderline outrageous tuition, but financial aid is quite good, I was offered $10,000 in scholarships and grants without any separate applications.
Tips for prospective students Apply to at least one of the numerous Residential Learning Communities. They range from interests in the Arts, Culture, Cooking, and Sexual Identity. Not only do these offer great social networking options for first year students (you have 5 or 6 built-in friends), for $61 extra, you spend the year in a spacious suite, with private bathrooms and carpet, as opposed to a cramped and tiled dorm room. The Living/Learning Community is arguably the most connected dorm on campus, go L'nLephants!
Great for these types of students Anyone and everyone can find a home here, in one of the least diverse places in the United States, Vermont, Burlington and more specifically UVM is maybe unexpectedly very welcoming and open to diversity and difference.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I think what stands out about UVM is that there are so many different places you can learn. The classroom, of course, is where you will learn academic subjects; however, I'm also looking forward to learning about other places from my classmates, learning about organic food from the dining halls, learning about causes and social justice from clubs, and so much more.
Will enjoy being here Burlington is an awesome city! I live near Boston, and it reminds me of a scaled-down version of Boston - plus a lot safer and cleaner.
Bang for the buck Yes, it's really expensive... but there's a ton of financial aid available and everything on campus makes it totally worth it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are classes for almost anything you ever wanted to learn from the history of cheese to art history to beer making to wildlife animal care. You name it and there is probably a class for it. The one downfall is in most of the classes are lecture based being most of the learning is done by yourself straight from the book (normally cramming right before finals) but if you are the type of person to buckle down and teach yourself, you will learn a lot here.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere is awesome and the people are even better. Most people are accepting and friendly and down to earth. UVM attracts a certain type of person (outdoorsy, environmentally friendly, and fun loving) but those people are exactly what makes UVM a good time and awesome place to go to school.
Bang for the buck If you can get financial aid or scholarships, it's worth it but at 45,000 a year out of state is a bit hefty for boring classes with teachers who for from other countries and hard to understand. If you can afford the money once you are there every thing is included in tuition including laundry and city buses. The price seems expensive at first but its as much of a deal as possible by allowing 100 wash and dries a semester and unlimited city buses and movie and game rentals, etc.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in clubs and put yourself out there. College is what you make of it so sitting in your room hoping to make friends won't do it and people here are friendly and would love to talk to you just say hi!
If you are on a co ed floor, try to avoid getting involved with people on your floor it causes unnecessary drama and often splits the once happy family.
Living in the dorms, keep your door open so you can meet the people you live with, don't be surprised when people pop in at all hours of the night and day just to talk.Great for these types of students Outdoorsy types

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot As an Education major I have found that the majority of my professors seem to take an interest in my individual learning. Even in a large class of 100+ students they will make an effort to know everybody's names. Due to this commitment from the professors you begin to have more of a connection to them and a desire to learn. I have found all of my professors to be incredible insightful and to have unique ways of teaching material. They are able to relate all the information to how it will effect you later in life and they detail situations where the learning will be useful.
Am enjoying being here Who knows if Burlington is actually a city or if its a town but either way it is still a great place to be. There is so much going on here, from the music scene, to the art scene, to the outdoors and to the slopes. No matter ones personality there is always a group of students they will find a common interest. Burlington makes a huge effort to be eco-friendly and that is obvious both downtown and at UVM. City Market (a grocery store) is a great place to find wholesome foods that are both organic and local. Places such as Muddy Waters and Uncommon Ground are terrific coffee joints where one can study while enjoying a delicious ginger beet smoothie or a plate of hummus and veggies. The UVM campus is amazing. The beautiful flowers and green lawns are evident throughout the year, unless of course the snow is covering them up! The Outing Club at UVM offers great opportunities to get off campus and explore Vermont. For those out of staters this is a wonderful chance to go hiking or canoeing at an affordable price. Programs offered by the club allow students to further their interest in the outdoors and to learn better leadership skills. As I mentioned earlier the professors are really down to earth and approachable, the students also have a laid back attitude and it is extremely easy to make a multitude of close friends.
Bang for the buck As an out of state student UVM is extremely expensive, even for in state students it can be quite pricy. However, UVM does have an amazing and beautiful campus with many recently renovated buildings that have the most current technology. Our on-campus living is fairly decent and the cafeterias serve delicious food. There are many perks of being a UVM student such as free access to the CCTA buses, free gym membership and so on.
Tips for prospective students For any student going anywhere I would recommend to get involved on campus. Especially at UVM campus involvement is a huge part of your time here. There are so many clubs for a vast variety of interests. Joining a campus organizations allows one to meet peers who have common interests, to make friends outside of their building or major. Upperclassmen from these organization can serve as mentors and sources on inspiration. In addition many organization offer leadership roles which can help in gaining self confidence, furthering ones leadership techniques, and offer the ability to make a difference. Many clubs also offer community service involvement and opportunities to reach out to both the Burlington and UVM community. Each club has so many commitments and activities that they can sometimes be overwhelming, yet, they are also instilling the importance of organization. It is so important to be organized and if one learns how to prioritize while in college it will make things so much easier later in life. Having organization in ones clubs and learning to be passionate will transfer over to better study habits and maintaing a high energy about different subject matters.
Great for these types of students UVM is wonderful for students who care about others, who have an interest in our impact on the world, who are interested in the outdoors, who have laid back personalities, who are independent and who have confidence. There are many opportunities available at UVM and it is up to you to find them!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are very good, especially the humanitarian/philosophy type classes. Class sizes vary, so if you like your classes small you have that option or rather it huge, plenty of those too.
Am enjoying being here The whether is beautiful up. Winter is very long, so it's great if you like being out in the snow. Burlington is a great college town, there is always something to do, and is right off of lake Champlain.
Bang for the buck If you are in-state, you are getting a great deal. If not, well, it's quite pricey. If money is not an object for you, UVM could be a great fit. But there are probably other schools with equal qualifications and a smaller price tag.
Tips for prospective students If you're from anywhere south of Vermont, prepare for the cold. You may think Hey, I can handle it but be wary, it is a long and very cold winter. There are buses, but you have to be outside for some time one way or another.
Great for these types of students The ones that are open minded and are willing to look outside the box.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences UVM is a great place to earn a good education and have a lot of fun at the same time. It offers a lot of different activities for students and has a wide variety of opportunities. UVM is also located in the great city of Burlington, which has beautiful scenery and a wonderful downtown.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a smaller college which a lot of activity and life in the students, UVM is a great place to go.
Academic Rigor The amount of effort you place in your work is really what effects how good your grades are going to be. UVM classes offer a huge selection of interesting and cool topics for fun. Besides the basic required classes there are opportunities to try something new or learn about a topic that is completely unique.
Dorm Life There are many options for dorm living on campus. There are 4 different campus locations that all have something unique to offer.
Food and Dining There are both the dining halls and other cafes to eat on campus. The dining hall food is pretty basic, but when using points, a wide selection of food can be purchased.
What to do for fun Downtown Burlington is just a couple minutes away by walking. There are many shops to choose from. The water front and beach is also a great place to hang out in the fall and spring. There are many concerts and shows to attend all throughout the school year. There are also on campus activities which are often free and fun.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university of vermont is an exciting, comfortable, and interesting place to attend school. you are sure to find a good sense of diversity, along with a strong program for any science/liberal arts-based major. while it is somewhat of a party school, not all students participate in that domain; studying comes first with most uvm students!
Tips for prospective students come visit! make sure to ask questions. look into your department and make a point to speak with your prospective professors. get in touch with alumni! get to know burlington. remember that a college is more than academics -- if you don't feel right here, chances are, you will not do well here.
What to do for fun the downtown area is fantastic, especially on the weekends. there are several restaurants in and around the town of burlington. transportation is always available. there are buses running to and from the city on weekdays and weekends. on-campus clubs and activities are always looking for new members. sports games are big for students at uvm as well. there is a little something for everyone here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the naked bike ride really does happen! it ends both semesters. also, you'll get 4/20 off... uvm likes to call it honors day.
Great for these types of students - earthy-crunchy
- social and outgoing
- into sports
- into the outdoors/environment
- science related majors
- arts majors
- snow loversGreek Life greek life is a part of the uvm culture. there is a variety of fraternities and sororities for students to choose from. rushing occurs at the beginning of each semester, and involves several fun activities for those willing to pledge! it is a great way for the less social student to get to know his or her community in a very unique way.
Campus Safety there are blue lights everywhere, and a few phone numbers for students to call if ever they feel unsafe walking alone on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences this is a great university! plenty of academic offerings and a georgeous campus
Tips for prospective students bring rain boots...lots of mud in the fall and spring. also invest in a down coat/parka w a hood...wicked cold in the winter!
Academic Rigor courses are challenging...most professors are available to help if you are having difficulty.
Dorm Life dorm life is dependent on where your dorm is and who is there with you. better to be on an upper floor (except when moving in/out!) as this will minimize noise from outside and running down halls.
Food and Dining plenty of choises and places to go...bit it's not home cooking!
What to do for fun play a sport (many club, intramural and varsity options). join a club - everythinh from outdoors stuff to singing/performing plays to community service.
Bang for the buck i would not want to go to school anywhere else.
Great for these types of students everyone who is willing to actually work hard and not try to bluff their way through college
Clubs and Activities outing club; ski/snowboard club; too many clubs to mention@!
Greek Life yes

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the people here are so nice and welcoming. the town is beautiful. the university of vermont has a place for everyone to fit in and feel at home.
Tips for prospective students be open to trying new things, and don't be intimidated. just do whatever makes you happy!
Academic Rigor uvm is very challenging, but it is entirely worth it because you are learning about things you are passionate about. most topics can somehow relate back to what is currently wrong with the world or society and how our generation can fix it.
Dorm Life the dorms take some getting used to, but if you make it cozy and inviting it will feel like a home away from home.
Food and Dining there are a lot of choices, but the food is just sodexo, nothing too fancy. get points not unlimited!
What to do for fun there is always something to do either on campus or in town. skiing/snowboarding are big, there are also sporting events like hockey games, there are all sorts of fitness classes, movies, dances. whatever you're interested in doing, you will find it here.
Bang for the buck uvm is extremely expensive, i wouldn't be able to afford coming here without huge amounts of financial aid. however, i wouldn't be happier anywhere else.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a fire escape attached to a library that students like to go sit on to watch the sunset, its really beautiful.
Great for these types of students literally everyone, uvm is one of the most accepting and diverse places i've ever been. you can be into anything, and there will be tons of opportunities to get to know people with the same interests. anyone who is sick of cliques should come to uvm.
Clubs and Activities i know a lot of people who are in clubs for all different sorts of things, we even have a quidditch team. the options are literally limitless, i just started yoga this semester and i love it.
Greek Life there was a huge scandal earlier this year regarding one fraternity that sent out a disgustingly inappropriate survey which jokingly discussed rape. it was a huge disappointment, and i have not affiliated myself with any members of any greek life. i'm sure there are benefits but i steer clear just to be safe.
Campus Safety i'm a female and i walk home alone at night relatively frequently. i've never honestly felt unsafe, although there have been incidences reported of theft or women being groped at night by strangers. as long as one uses common sense there is generally no need to be afraid.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences uvm is a great college with a lot of options and plenty of things to do. the campus is spread out, but it's still small enough that you can recognize people and make friends. i love this school
Tips for prospective students make sure you go on a couple tours before you make up your mind that you want to go here, but don't let be the only deciding factor. it took me until my admitted student day before i was really sure this was the school for me, and i am very happy here now. if you do end up going here, introduce yourself to any professors of big lectures after one of the first classes; they will have a face to put to your name, and it can work in your favor later on. lastly, talk to the people in your building and in your classes--get out there and you will make plenty of friends and have a great time.
Academic Rigor this really depends on what types of classes you are taking. lectures usually only have assigned readings for homework, and some professors use iclickers to make sure you did it, but some don't check at all. science and math classes are always hard. there's a lot of work and challenging exams, but they're not completely unmanageable. at the same time, there are a lot of small, personal classes where you can get to know your professor and your classmates, which makes it a lot easier to stay interested and to do well in any of your classes.
Dorm Life it's college. dorm life is what you make it. i live in a bit of a rowdy dorm building with neighbors who play loud music until 1am or later every night of the week, but it doesn't bother me too much and if we ask them to quiet down, they would. the campus is so spread out that people tend to stay on their campus most of the time, but certain places are known to be the party places, and others are always going to be quiet. redstone is really nice, but it's far away from everything else besides the gym. if you live on central campus you're going to have one of those tiny rooms that they show you during tours, but most of the other rooms on campus are not that small. the closer you are to classes and central campus, the smaller your room will be. if you live out a bit, you will have a nicer room, and you will probably want to take the bus to class when it's cold out.
Food and Dining if you have unlimited, there are three main dining halls you can eat at: cook, harris millis (the grundle), and simpson. the first two have decent food typical of most college campuses, but they are nothing special. however, the simpson dining hall has that plus a whole extra side where you can order a delicious meal off a touch screen menu. the other meal plan option is to have points, which are more like a debit card with a declining balance. with points you have a lot more options of where you can go and somewhat healthier choices, but it means that you really have to pay attention to what you spend each week so you don't run out of points and have to make your own food for the last weeks of the semester.
What to do for fun there are so many things you can do in burlington, you should never be bored. it can be a little bit annoying as a first year student because you're not allowed a car, but you can always make friends with upperclassmen or take the free shuttle that goes all around nearby towns. personally, i love walking down to church st--you can go to the mall, people watch, or stop into any of the little stores or restaurants that line the beautiful little street. you can also easily bus to the university mall or to williston where you will find more shopping and dining options, as well as wal-mart, which is always a good thing. there are a number of campus-sponsored activities and every week the uvm program bored sends out an e-mail with all sorts of events going on both on and off campus for that week. i've been to a salsa social, a comedy show, concerts, a movie screening, barbecues, and much more--if you want to have fun, burlington is a great place to be.
Bang for the buck very very expensive school, especially if you are from out of state. however, there are hundreds of scholarships out there to help you, and either way, it really is a great school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the naked bike ride is certainly a unique tradition. it happens right around exam time in the fall and in the spring, and it's exactly what it sounds like. late at night, a huge portion of the uvm student population gets naked (and often covered in body paint and glitter) and runs or bikes around a central location of campus for a couple hours. it's kind of a big deal.
Great for these types of students it's not just for hippies and/or druggies. there are collections of every type of student. if you are preppy, you will find your crowd. if you're a true vermonter, you definitely have a place here. we're known for skiers and snowboarders, but really, there are plenty of us who don't do either, and don't even like the snow, and we get by just fine.
Clubs and Activities there is a club for absolutely every interest or hobby that you can think of. if there isn't already a club for what you want, you can gather a few friends and start it on your own.
Campus Safety i almost always feel safe on campus. there are those safety blue lights all around campus, and everything is generally well lit up at night. walk home with a friend when it's dark out, but you don't need to be paranoid about something terrible happen--just be smart. if at any time you don't feel comfortable, you can always call police services and they'll help you or even just give you a ride back to your room (we're given the number at the beginning of the year, so put it in your phone).

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences it's in a wonderful place to live. courses are rigorous but not overwhelming as long as you keep up. most of the professors want students to succeed and are very helpful.
Tips for prospective students look into the living and learning program to get good housing.
Food and Dining for college food, it's really good.
What to do for fun see concerts downtown at nectar's, metronome, and memorial auditorium, enjoy a huge variety of delicious beer at the pubs (once you're 21), and spend time in the summer at the beaches and parks.
Bang for the buck especially good if you're an in-state student.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the naked bike ride on the last day of classes each semester!
Great for these types of students the type who likes to party but is also motivated to work hard and succeed.
Clubs and Activities too many to list. there's something for everyone.
Greek Life most students aren't in a fraternity or sorority. fraternities in particular have been getting shut down for hazing and underage drinking.
Campus Safety very safe campus, well lit with a lot of emergency blue light stations. we have our own campus police too, so make sure you have their number in your phone just in case.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences university of vermont is not very diverse. there are great teachers and learning opportunities, but the social environment is a little rough. if your emphasis is on a diverse, cultural social experience, don't come here.
Tips for prospective students focus on your studies and work hard. make sure to build a relationship with the teachers for recommendations and extra help, but they probably won't come to you. you need to initiate. college is what you make of it, no matter where you are.
Academic Rigor it depends on what you're looking for. this school is so big and relatively easy to get into that there are a wide range of students, from the slacker pothead hippie to the driven, almost obsessive, over-achiever.
Dorm Life the dorm life is very difficult. there is no flexibility and they match roommates poorly. i've had an especially difficult time living in the dorms. they are not the cleanest and students tend to be disrespectful. no wonder no one wants to stay on campus after sophomore year. there are very little consequences for those who get in trouble in the dorms which can be annoying if someone is constantly bothering everyone else.
Food and Dining for a college so large, they have very few options. on the weekends it is even worse. good luck eating healthy here unless you love salad for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. there are sometimes good choices, but a lot of dining halls close early.
What to do for fun there's a lot of fun things to do. burlington is a great town. there is a huge emphasis on outdoor activities like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and just being outside.
Bang for the buck one of the most expensive public schools. if you're leaning towards the private school feel, just go to a private school. it would be worth the extra money.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus one unusual tradition is the naked bike ride. on the last day of classes each semester, at midnight, students bike/run/scooter/walk/skip on a pre-determined route...naked. it's good for a laugh.
Great for these types of students hippies, stoners, skiers, snowboarders, agricultural families, environmental students
Clubs and Activities there are a lot of great clubs for just about everything.
Greek Life it's not a big deal here, but people do it.
Campus Safety some of the buildings don't have the greatest security. anyone could really walk in with a crowd or be let in. the school handles incidents very carefully though.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Not a great place to go unless you like small towns and folksy people. Most of the classes are far away from the dorms (15-20 mins to walk to classes) and the food isn't very good. Everything is also highly over priced.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are really willing to live in a small town far from any large town (Montreal is 1.5 hrs away but impossible to get to). If you are out of state, don't even apply! They give bad scholarship and it is over priced.
Academic Rigor Classes are a bit harder than they seem but very manageable.
Dorm Life You get to know people pretty well but people are not out going like in the Midwest.
Food and Dining Food is terrible except in Simpson Dining Hall.
What to do for fun People party or go down by the lake when it is warm out.
Bang for the buck Not even worth the cost!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus People really like to steal construction signs.
Great for these types of students Hippie things are abundant!
Clubs and Activities Ski club is the most popular and most sports are club sports.
Greek Life Very small but controls most of the parties.
Campus Safety Extremely safe!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The classes at the University of Vermont are challenging but very involving at the same time. Professors, faculty, and students alike are very friendly and open-minded to others. In general, I would say that the majority of students there are happy with their decision and enjoy their time in Burlington.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that the school has the kinds of majors you are interested in and check out the campus and the surrounding city of Burlington before making your decision. Also keep in mind that although Burlington is absolutely beautiful in the summer, it gets cold fast and you have to be able to enjoy, or at least endure, the cold weather! Taking up a winter sport definitely helps with that.
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging and many freshman classes are large lecture classes in which you are expected to do your work on your own. Of course the Professor's and TA's are there to help you and the classes do get smaller as you go further into your major. Most of the coursework is up on Blackboard so you are expected you check it frequently especially since your professors don't always tell you everything in class. Many classes, especially science classes, have lab periods once a week that lets you do hands on work related to the material which is cool.
Dorm Life There are many different dorms and multiple campuses that are available. As a freshman you do not get to choose your dorm. There are certain dorms that are mostly underclassmen however they aren't strictly for them. Some dorms are the typical shoebox (small) freshman dorms and some are more unique and roomier. It is all up to chance basically, however the majority of students move off-campus junior year. There are also specialized living and learning dorms that you can apply into like the greenhouse or potter co-op or daycare co-op just to name a few.
Food and Dining There are 2 types of meal plans: points and unlimited. Point plans have a wider variety of places to eat however you run the chance of running out of meal points by the end of the semester. The unlimited meal plan lets you eat at only unlimited dining halls where you only have to swipe to get in and can stay and eat as much as you want. However, unlimited food gets old fast and is not as good as the food that the points plan offers. There are many dining halls (at least 7 I'd say) so there are a lot of options all over campus, some larger and some smaller.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things to do for fun on and off campus. On campus there are always events planned by the school like free movie nights and dances and raves or whatnot however those are mostly for underclassmen. Off-campus there are house parties, frat parties, bars and clubs, and plenty of music venues to go to. The shopping around town is great, especially church street, and the waterfront is great to spend time on too. There are always sports games to go to especially basketball and ice hockey. There are also plenty of intramurals and club sports to join like broomball and soccer to name a few and the gym, ice rink, and track is open for all students. There are also many yoga and fitness classes that you can join for a small fee.
Bang for the buck UVM is very expensive for a state school especially and they like to charge alot for very menial things like parking tickets. However, the quality of the education is still very good and the campus itself is very beautiful and useful. There is a hospital on campus and many of the buildings are LEED certified which means that they are very environmentally friendly. The school is also in the great location of Burlington, VT which is hard to beat.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One unusual UVM tradition is the Naked Bike Ride. After the last day of classes every semester, students come out onto the green at midnight to let loose and run around naked (on a course of course ;) before they have to buckle down and study for finals. It is a very unique and wonderful tradition that has been held down by the students for the students every year, whether the administration funds or supports it or whatnot. It is one of the things that makes UVM such an amazing and unique place, it definitely helps define us whether we all like it or not.
Great for these types of students UVM is a great place for laid back, chill people. There are many types of people here, hippies, hipsters, skaters, ski bums, sorority girls, frat boys, science nerds, activists, environmentalists and everything in between. The great thing about UVM is that no matter what type of person you are, everybody there is open-minded and it is easy to be yourself. However, while you're there you might see yourself turning into one of these stereotypes because, well you're at UVM. It's hard to leave here without picking up at least some of these attributes.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of clubs and activities to join. If you can think of one it probably exists, or you can create one yourself! There's the outdoor club which sponsors many different outings, the ski and snowboard club which offers great discounts on student ski passes, and other random clubs and intramurals like the salsa and swing society and WRUV the UVM radio station.
Greek Life The Greek life is definitely a part of UVM however it doesn't have to be if you choose so. The sororities and frats aren't a huge presence on campus however the frats are known to have a party every weekend. They don't however host every party available since there are plenty of other houses off campus so they don't necessarily own the social scene off campus.
Campus Safety The UVM campus is very safe. There are blue light posts all around campus and are visible wherever you go. They are available so you can alert campus security if you need to. Walking around campus at night as a girl, I have never felt unsafe or threatened. There are the random hobos that hang around the library sometimes but they are completely harmless. Ra's and supervisors always tell you to walk at night with a buddy so if you stick to that rule you should feel safe.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the teachers are really knowledgeable and helpful. They want their students to learn everything that they need to know and they want their students to pass.
Am enjoying being here The college environment is fantastic, as is Burlington itself. Both the school and town have great people living in it that make being there fantastic.
Bang for the buck As much as I love UVM, it is WAY too expensive. I've only been there for a semester and I'm already trying to figure out how I'll be able to stay there next year.
Tips for prospective students If you decide to go to UVM, make sure you check sites like Rate My Professor before signing up for classes, and DON'T buy textbooks from the bookstore if you can help it.
Great for these types of students People interested in Animal Science, Nutrition, Medical and Civil Engineering, as well as people who like the hippy, liberal scene, like to party and like to chill.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot John Sharp's Chemistry 032 class was challenging, but has taught me so much that I will take to medical school. I also took a lot from Stratton's biology course and Math 019. I also learned a lot in NFS 046.
Am enjoying being here I love everything. The people are nice, the teachers are amazing, and there are a lot of things to learn. I only dislike the cold.
Bang for the buck UVM is getting more expensive and although I learned a lot, its really difficult to afford 4 years and then medical school.
Tips for prospective students Join everything and try it out. Get involved and meet people. And remember what you want to do while there.
Great for these types of students Perfect for students that are unique and just like to do activities outdoors.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences UVM is a great college campus and learning environment. The professors are intelligent and helpful, and the students are very friendly. The science programs at UVM are very good as well, most professors are involved in personal studies in their fields.
Tips for prospective students Burlington is an exciting town to attend college in, and can be distracting. Learn to manage work and play early on to achieve success.
Academic Rigor As stated, the town of Burlington can be distracting at times when work needs to be done. Also, many of the classes are difficult because most science classes are lectures. Lecture classes can be a hard environment to learn in because of the amount of students per class, no attendance, and lack of teacher-student relationships.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a good way to meet new friends. At UVM the people living in your dorm become your best friends since most of the year is spent indoors.
Food and Dining The food at UVM is average, nothing too good or too horrible.
What to do for fun For fun most people go downtown to Church Street or go down to the lake (lake Champlain). A lot of students ski/snowboard whenever possible as well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The professors are accommodating in most cases. The classes are challenging, but fair. The community is really tight about coming together to make changes for the better, it's a neat thing to be a part of.
Tips for prospective students Study more than just the week before finals, and when/if you do study the week of finals, stay away from Bailey-Howe library, it's packed and stressful. Take advantage of the great gym and the outing club!
Academic Rigor As a biological studies major, I had a difficult time with some of my classes, but didn't reach out to get the help that was presented to me. It's possible to get good grades, you just have to take advantage of the textbooks, professors, free tutoring, and study materials that are made available.
Dorm Life Most of the dorms are really chill and the halls get along with one another. Even if you live in a dingy dorm, the people in the halls are something that can balance out a bum dorm.
Food and Dining Unlimited dining halls are fine if you aren't picky, and are really hungry, and don't worry about putting on a few pounds. The marche and the single serve places are ridiculously overpriced, but you survive.
What to do for fun Burlington is a really active place. People are constantly outside on bikes, running, kayaking, skiing, rock jumping, hiking, and are always in motion. But there are also little cafes down church street with a pretty nice mall. Depending on your mood, there is always something to do.
Bang for the buck Out of state tuition is high.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The naked bike ride is a tradition that's been around on the UVM campus and is not likely going anywhere soon, even if the president bans funding for it. It is one of the most fun events I've ever witnessed. Every semester on the night of the last day of classes everyone gets naked, paints their bodies, parties, and runs/rides in the naked bike ride. It is awesome.
Clubs and Activities There are literally too many to count. There is something for everybody, and if there isn't, you can just make one yourself.
Campus Safety Lots of police, but it's still possible to party in peace.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor I've heard that research opportunities are very extensive and always available for students.
Dorm Life I have a friend who just finished the academic year at UVM, and she told me that she had so much fun meeting new people and spending time with them in the dorms. I can't wait to experience it.
Food and Dining When I was on campus for admitted student day, I went to the tortilla place in the Davis center, and I loved it! I was also informed that UVM is attempting to get all their food from local farmers markets around Burlington, and attempting to obtain organic produce as well. It's very exciting.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Burlington is the best! Have not met a nicer, more relaxed student body at any other school I've visited (visits to friends, college tours in high school, etc.). I absolutely love it, and everyone I know that went here has nothing but good things to say!
Tips for prospective students Try and get your hands on a free application, there are a bunch of those floating around, usually just expressing interest via their website gives you access to the free app. There's some extra cash in your pocket. Expect to live 2 years on campus, they have a policy about spending your first 8 semesters on campus. It is completely worth the wait, because everyone their junior year usually gets an off-campus house/apartment.
Believe it or not, everyone here does not smoke weed. There is that scene, but also tons of people don't. Its a very relaxed social scene here, you kind of just do what you want to do and everyone is really cool about it.Academic Rigor You get what you put in. You can, and many people do, go in as an easier major and take the minimum requirements and can find easy, large classes to skate by on. There is, however, a great collection of professors here who will give you their best and expect yours. My experience with professors has been way more positive than negative, especially within my major fields.
Classes your first couple of years will generally be on the bigger side. A lot of the intro classes I've taken are around 108, and the largest class size offered is 250 in the Billings lecture hall. Once you pass the intro ones they get much better, usually 40 or fewer students.Dorm Life I've had the luck to have the smallest rooms on campus my freshman year, and moved to the biggest room my sophomore year. There is an RA per floor, so things don't usually get too out of hand on weeknights. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are another story. They can range from quiet (usually when everyone went too hard the night before) to raging. No issues with bugs or mice or anything of that nature.
Food and Dining Food on campus ranges widely from decent to awesome, it all depends where you choose to eat. There is a points system, that uses food points in a declining balance accepted at over a dozen spots on campus, and an unlimited system, that gives you unlimited swipes into any of the three all-you-care-to-eat places. The better quality food is the points, hands down.
None of the food on campus is bad, but there is definitely a pecking order. One of the unlimited places has this cool FOD (Food on Demand) system where for lunch and dinner you can order from a touch-screen and you get a pager, and they'll buzz you when your food is ready. Its all made-to-order, which is nice, and usually way better than the other food they have at unlimited. There are also two local vendors in the student center that take points: New World Tortilla, which serves burritos and wraps, and Ben & Jerry's, the greatest ice cream in the world! (I may be biased since I work there, but it is darn good regardless). No matter what your tastes, there is something for you (especially vegans, there are a lot of vegan options!)What to do for fun Burlington is situated in an awesome spot. An hour plus drive to Montreal, 20 minutes from the slopes and mountains, and right on an amazing lake. There is great hiking and backpacking, along with rock/ice climbing, kayaking, cliff jumping, and pretty much any other activity for outdoor junkies you can think of. If the outdoors aren't your thing all the time, downtown Burlington is the bees knees! There are dozens of bars, restaurants, hole-in-the-wall spots, and shops. They have a cool multi-block pedestrian walkway on Church St., with street performers and vendors, musicians, TONS of dogs, and always filled with really nice people.
The weekends are always a good time. If partying is your scene, there are tons of cool bars for the 21+ crowd, fake ID's usually don't last long in Burlington. For everyone else, there are always house parties going on. The cool thing about parties at UVM is that they aren't just the Top 40 on repeat at every house. You're way more likely to find yourself at a relaxed beach-themed funk music party or a dubstep music rave-style party... and everything in between.
There is a dope music scene too, a lot of the bars and coffee shops love to sponsor local musicians. Higher Ground is the big concert venue and they always have a good show playing.Bang for the buck Now I put one star because what UVM the institution offers for it's price, it's not worth it at all. The surrounding area of Burlington and the scenery, however, make it all worth it. The town is awesome, and the school has some amazing views of the Adirondack Mountains in New York over Lake Champlain to the west, and to the east the snow-capped Green Mountains. It is at moments when I'm looking at these views I realize why its all worth it here. Its the kind of place your parents and friends will love to come visit, and many people end up living here for at least one summer, if not for a year or two after graduation.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most participated in, and possibly the strangest, tradition is the Naked Bike Ride. At midnight after the last day of classes (always a Wednesday) each semester, tons of students get naked (yes, all the way) and either run (most run), bike, scooter, roller blade, rickshaw, moonwalk, pogo, skateboard, or skip their away around campus in a celebration of the end of classes. Its kind of one last dance before finals, which start the following Friday (everyone has Thursday to... recover and get into study-mode).
The NBR used to be sponsored by the school, it was my freshman year, which included police and EMS on sight (it can get cold in December!), and barriers to separate the runners from the observers (yes people watch). The school decided not to sponsor it, because it ran them around $30,000. They now try to discourage people from doing it, but it is so ingrained in the student body that every semester since they cancelled it, people have still been getting naked and doing their thing.Great for these types of students UVM honestly has something for everyone, except maybe people who come expecting to be in a huge frat with wild parties like they see in the movies. Not to say UVM doesn't party, we're consistently up in the top 20 on party school lists, but the people are real here. UVM is a very real place where you'll make very real, meaningful connections with other students. There is something for everybody pretty much. Academically, there are great Med, Business, Psychology, History, Political Science, and Economics departments, just to name a few. The only complaints I've heard are about their art department, from a friend of mine who is majoring in Art.
Clubs and Activities There are a bunch of intramural and club sports teams people can join. Broomball is popular, so is soccer, dodgeball, basketball, and flag-football. The club teams can get pretty competitive, with tryouts and full schedules of games. They are a good outlet for athletes who don't want to play NCAA Division 1, but still want to keep up their skills.
The Outing Club is very popular, which provides for low-cost outdoors trips all year. They also rent gear for those who want to do it on their own.
The Ski and Snowboard Club is the biggest on campus. It gives members access to discounted passes to the mountains, free swag, access to cheap trips each year, ranging from Jackson Hole to the Alps, and tons of shop nights where gear is discounted a lot. People here take their winter sports seriously, and this club is perfect for that.Greek Life Very minimal. Only around 10% of students participate in them. They are not the only source of parties and fun on the weekends. I successfully went out every weekend my freshman year and only found myself at a frat party once. If Greek life isn't your thing, then do not worry at all because it wasn't mine either, and I have very few interactions. The lack of Greek Life dominating the social scene was one draw for me to UVM, and for many other people I've heard.
Campus Safety Burlington is a relatively safe place, but things sometimes do happen. There is no real policy on guests or who you can swipe into your building, so you can have that random friend of a friend's friend wandering around your building. Also, last year we had homeless people sneaking into our building during the coldest parts of winter, and sometimes stealing laundry. Its always best to walk in groups on the weekends. UVM has a weekend off-campus bus for students only that makes a big loop hitting all parts of campus and the major spots downtown This bus, which is lovingly referred to as the drunk bus, is great in the winter because it saves you a real annoying walk back up the hill from downtown. It is also a great way to make new friends.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences UVM presents many different opportunities to students in all fields. Most programs are well developed and offer many courses and different teachers of those fields. It is a party school, but the number of clubs, organizations, sports, and programs around campus can keep one very busy in other activities as well.
Tips for prospective students It's vermont, so you have to be willing to put effort into having fun in the winter.
Academic Rigor The challenge of the academics varies. Most classes are quite difficult, others are easy but only grade based on exams, which makes them difficult, and other classes are easy. A lot of the difficulty of the class depends on your previous school years and your teacher.
Dorm Life UVM offers many different dorms. There's substance free housing and regular college dorms. Converse on central campus is a 'regular' dorm, but the students who live there get to live in a castle. UVM also has a living/learning dorms in which students join a program and spend time with other students who are interested in the same program topic.
Food and Dining UVM is serviced by sudexo, a common college food distributor. Food in most dinning halls gets boring quickly. The dinning hall on Simpson is by far the best, but if you have points or cash, eating at Brennan's in the davis center is by far the best choice, it's just too expensive to eat there all the time. There are plenty of options for you no matter what plan you have.
What to do for fun There are far too many club sports, organizations, clubs, and groups to be involved in and count. There's something for you.
Bang for the buck UVM is pretty expensive, especially if you're from out of state. It think for out of staters, since it costs almost as much as some private schools it's doesn't score too greatly in this category.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The President's tried to get rid of the naked bike ride, but that clearly didn't work too well and has become even better and more well attended since. UVM has also recently started an annual humans vs zombies game that's campus wide.
Great for these types of students Great for students who can work during the weak and party on the weekends, since it's a party school. Also, it's great for students who can work with a lot of noise, or who don't mind walking a lot to get to the library. In general, it's good for students who don't mind walking/biking a lot and generally being proactive in transportation ways.
Clubs and Activities Many Many Many to choose from!
Greek Life Greek life is dwindling quite slowly (or so i've heard). But as of yet, the number of students who participate in greek life is just right. Not too many to make you feel pressure, and not small enough so those who are part of greek life feel pressure.
Campus Safety I have friends (who are girls) that walk home alone at 12, or 1 in the morning across campus and hardly have any trouble or feel unsafe. I also don't feel unsafe on campus at all hours of the day (I am also female).

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences University of Vermont is a small, yet great school, with many amazing programs and opportunities available. Based in a beautiful city, Burlington, your minutes from Lake Champlain; it's truly and amazing place to live. The students and faculty here are all very accepting and laid back.
Tips for prospective students If your looking for amazing academics in a really scenic and beautiful place, look no further. UVM is a fun place to be, very eco-friendly and forward thinking!
Academic Rigor Academics are of extremely high standard.
Dorm Life Dorms located on or very near campus.
Food and Dining Lots of local healthy food options in the many cafes on campus.
What to do for fun If you like outdoor activities, Lake Champlain offers many fun times, from swimming, boating, bike paths and more. Burlington also has many great restaurants and bars downtown.
Bang for the buck It's certainly not the cheapest school for out-of-staters, but it's worth consideration!
Great for these types of students Great for people who don't want an urban setting, enjoy nature, eco-friendly etc.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I would rate the University of Vermont very highly for anyone who would like a unique experience in Burlington, Vermont. I have been happy spending time in the town and being at a school that is both small enough to feel like you know the majority of students but also large enough that you can walk to class with the opportunity to meet many new people on the way. I have been pleased with the many opportunities available to me in my past three years at UVM.
Tips for prospective students I struggled in the beginning with trying to find the people and places that I felt like I belonged to. There was just so much to choose from! I suggest trying to discover what you are truly interested in and exploring every opportunity UVM has from the beginning. That will allow you to find those areas of campus that you are happy being a part of. There are so many ways to be involved but the struggle can often be finding the best place for yourself.
Academic Rigor I have found that this depends on the instructor and the course itself. While many courses can be very challenging, I think students are generally able to handle them if they attend classes and put the work in.
Dorm Life This also depends very much on where you live. I lived in the Living/Learning building for two years, which is programmed housing that allows students to live in small suites. If students are looking for a generally less lively building to live in with more intentional students, I suggest applying to one of these many programmed housing opportunities.
Food and Dining Again, it depends on where you decide to eat. The dining halls have lots of options and tasty food but if you would like a higher quality meal in a place that feels more like a restaurant, try Brennan's in the student center. Other options are also available depending on your preference at mealtime.
What to do for fun Far too many options to choose from. Students always love to visit downtown Burlington, which is just a short walk down the hill. Lake Champlain is also at the bottom of the hill and when the weather is nice, spending time by the lake or in the lake are usually some of my favorite places. There are always events on campus as well that are emailed to students weekly from contra dances to pub quizzes to movie screenings.
Bang for the buck I try very hard to take advantage of everything UVM has to offer but it is difficult because there is so much available for students. They have an exceptional athletic facility with a pool, ice rink, gym, and more. They have events every week and several programs funded by the university. They also have tutoring, counseling and career help among other opportunities that are in place for students to utilize as they please.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The naked bike ride. It is very much what it sounds like and it happens the evening of the last day of classes every semester for anyone that wishes to participate.
Great for these types of students Excited about being in Vermont, outdoorsy and/or earthy or simply appreciates the environment, laid back and ready to be comfortable with themselves as a college student.
Clubs and Activities Anything you could think of... and if it's not there, you're encouraged to start a club of your own!
Greek Life I don't have experience with this aspect of UVM.
Campus Safety We have the blue light system as do most campuses and from my own experience, I have found it to be very safe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I would give UVM a 8 out of 10. University of Vermont is a great school with a great college town. Just be prepared for the cold winters
Tips for prospective students Join a lot of clubs and get involved in the community. Bring warm clothes!
Academic Rigor Classes are harder than I thought, but still good.
Dorm Life The smaller the rooms the more fun they are. The new uhieghts buildings are fun but are not as much fun(partying wise).
Food and Dining For a public university of over 12,000 students the food is suprisngly really good.
What to do for fun Join the outing club and take advantage of all the natural beauties of Vermont.
Bang for the buck I am from instate. so its definitely worth it. For out of state I might've chosen somewhere else.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Simpson dining hall, or Brennans the best hangout/places to eat.
Great for these types of students Pot heads, environmentalists, hippies, hipsters, outdoorsy, and everyone really.
Clubs and Activities outing club is great!
Greek Life Pretty absent. definitely not a big thing on campus.
