    Did learn a lot

I learned a lot of life lessons here. There were a lot of bad and a lot of good at this school. Overall, I learned a great deal from my extremely knowledgeable professors. But I only had a professor for about 3 classes my whole freshman year. I had graduate students for most of my classes. Having a graduate student inexperienced at teaching didn't help me much at most of my subjects. That is why my rating in learned a lot is only 3 stars instead of 5, the graduate students teach many freshman subjects there. Personally, I learn better from experienced teachers.

    Did enjoy being here

I enjoyed being at the school yes, the town? Not so much. Again, why my rating is only 3 stars instead of 5 is that the school was pretty cool, the campus is beautiful, but the town sucked. There is great activities that the school does such as friday night fever where they show movies on huge projectors movie theater style, and many of these movies are still in theaters! And they have concerts, I saw Third Eye Blind and Elton john here, but because those kinds of things are the only things to do in the whole town on a Friday night besides bowling, and concerts only come around once in a long while, my overall enjoyment of the school and town is only 3/5 stars. Plus the dorms suck so that doesn't help my overall enjoyment rating either.

    Bang for the buck

I was an out of state student who received a scholarship to go to UW, so I figured why not? But once I was there, I had to jump through every department's hoops, from financial aid to the office of the registrar in order to get all my student loan stuff, my work study stuff, and my scholarship stuff done. That process took me over 3 weeks to do, to the point where I was already well into classes and still didn't have money to buy books because my scholarship, student loans, and work study still hadn't cleared with the financial aid dept. at the school. As apposed to where I'm at now, where I got all that stuff taken care of in a day, and classes haven't even started yet. This school is way to expensive for out of state students, and they are not very helpful in taking care of your problems. When I was dealing with all the various offices, every person that ever helped my take care of financial things acted like it was not their problem and they couldn't believe I couldn't take care of this myself. The quality of education is great, but with everything else I didn't like about this school great education wasn't enough to keep me there.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are an out of state student, don't come here. It is way too expensive to come here instead of going to the state university or a community college in your area first! I cant stress that enough, I am 15 grand in debt with student loans just from my freshman year, and that's with a scholarship from the school and work study and Stafford loans from the government! Where I'm at now, it's going to be just under 2 grand for me to take 14 credit hours, hmmm... 2 grand versus 10 grand? No contest

Great for these types of students

In state students, and students who come from very small towns! Also has a great rodeo team! Plus this school is rich so everything everywhere is state of the art, bought brand new every year. Laramie has absolutely nothing to do though, which leads to only one thing, and this one thing is very damaging to your educational career, PARTYING! I had a blast, but looking back, since there was absolutely nothing to do but see movies and bowl, all we did was party, and that's all everyone I knew in everyone of my classes did too! You had to do something on a Friday or Saturday night, and you can only see so many movies and go bowling in their crappy bowling alley so many times, before partying is the only thing left to do. Don't get sucked into that like most students that go to small town large colleges do.

    Am learning a lot

I am a sophomore level engineering student and have learned a great deal through my classes at the University. Professors go out of the way to make sure concepts are understood and are more than willing to put in time outside of class and office hours to clarify hazy points. Though not all of my instructors have been full professors, I have not run into an instructor incapable or unqualified to teach their given courses. Professors in addition to teaching courses have professional careers and are able to being real world practice into their courses. For those choosing to stay in the dorms, the freshmen interest groups and themed floors provide excellent opportunities to work with students in the same classes as yourself. Taking the opportunity to develop study groups in your major area from the start has helped greatly with understanding.

    Am enjoying being here

Going to the University of Wyoming has to have been one of the better college decisions I have made. Laramie provides the feel of small college with the opportunities of any of the major state university. When I came up to school I knew no one. The student body develops tight knit groups that I have greatly enjoyed being a part of. The diversity of clubs and organizations available to students makes sure that there is something for most interests from professional societies to club sports and graphic design.

    Bang for the buck

Classes in Wyoming are much cheaper than I could have found in Colorado. With fewer institutions to split federal money, UW has access to more money for scholarships and program development. Professors care about how the individual student is doing and work to provide opportunities outside of the range of general classes. Where as most universities restrict research to graduate students or seniors, UW encourages students at all levels to participate in works to further understanding and real world application of knowledge learned in class. I am have greatly enjoyed the opportunities I have been given to conduct research.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. Find what you love and go for it.

Great for these types of students

Students that like individual attention and those motivated to take advantage of the great opportunities available

    Am learning a lot

I am a freshman at the University of Wyoming, so although I have not experiences finals or anything yet, I feel as if I am learning a lot. There is a good mix of professors and graduate students that teach the classes so experience different teaching styles and approaches to learning. There are quite a few large lecture classes but most do not reach over 200 students so there is still a good student to professor ratio. The teachers present well rounded, new information in every class and I find myself eager to attend class every day. The only place that I sometimes find that my learning is curbed is some of the classes with graduate students. They are learning new things parallel to their students so points they try to make are sometimes unclear. Otherwise, the professors are all very knowledgeable and have taught me a lot since the semester started a month ago. The 1000 level courses that most freshmen take are a good transition from high school to college and demand just enough attention from the students that if you work hard enough A's and B's are not unattainable.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of Wyoming in located in Laramie, WY and has a population of 27,000 people. For those of you who are looking for a small to medium town, Laramie is the place to be. I love the people both on and off the campus: they are friendly, willing to help, and most of all share the small town, tight-knit feeling that you would not expect to find in a college town. The college itself has an endless amount of activities and ways to get involved so I am never bored. The weather can be a bit rough in the winter but the spring and summer are gorgeous- the only thing you have to get use to is the never ending wind. The area is fun to be in and the college life here is priceless: I love it here.

    Bang for the buck

When I started looking for colleges my junior year of high school, I quickly found that if I wanted to go to a university (as opposed to a community college), it was going to cost me a pretty penny. However, the University of Wyoming lies in a decent price range of $11,000 annual tuition for nonresidents, which is lower than that of Colorado State University or Colorado University-Boulder, two of my other options. The education that you receive is well rounded and in my experience thus far unbiased. The teachers are all very friendly and give a strong feeling that they are there to help you succeed in whatever you want to do (as long as effort on your part meets them half way.) On the extra-curricular side of the school, hundreds of events, activities, and resources are included in your tuition so you end up with a very well rounded, high bang for your buck. The only issue that I have had with the cost at the school is the room and board when living in the dorms. It averages out to nearly $1,000/month that you are living there and I struggle with this because there are ways to live cheaper but you are required to live in the dorms as a freshmen.

    Tips for prospective students

At the University of Wyoming-or any university for that matter- there are many scholarships that you can apply for but you have to look for them! Many scholarships through the school have deadline before the second semester of your senior year so be aware of this. Also, get involved: there is nothing worse that sitting alone in your dorm room on a Friday night. Meet new people, get involved in your school, and have fun (and this doesn't always mean drinking). If it came down to it, the 3 peices of adviced that i would give would be 1)be aware of deadlines 2) get involved and 3) make a good variety of friends. You don't want just partiers or just study buddies: have a few of both. Most of all, you get out what you put into the college experience. If you aren't enjoying yourself then you aren't trying hard enough.

Great for these types of students

The University of Wyoming is great for any student but the following attributes may be a better fit than others:
    1. Not adverse to cold or rapidly changing weather, especially wind
    2. Does not mind driving significant distances to get the next town (the closest towns are about 40 miles away in any direction).
    3. Likes small towns- the population is only 27,000 so its small enough that people are not in much of a hurry but big enough that there is always something to do.
    4. Those who are willing to work hard: the course work challenges you are requires about 20 hours a week OUTSIDE of class for studying
    5. Have interests in history: Wyoming is the least populated state in the country but has deep roots in the history of the country and more specifically the development of the west. There are hundreds of historical sites and cool things to see.
    6. Students who have a passion for horses: Laramie and the surrounding area is a great place to keep a horse and is decently priced
    7. Students who like quiet: the only frequent loud noise you hear in Laramie is someone's truck revving down Grand Avenue. Police sirens and honking horns are a rarity.
    8. Students who are looking for degree opportunities in natural resources or engineering: UW is emerging as a leader in both of these areas and is a great place to do both undergraduate and graduate work.
    9. Students who don’t want a far walk from the dorms to class. Not including the dorms, the campus is only about 6 blocks wide so the walk to class is short.
    10. Students looking to get out of their comfort zone, meet cool people, and earn a good degree at a good price.

    Am learning a lot

I have yet to have a professor from whom I don't feel I learned enough. They are all extremely well-qualified to teach their subject and passionate about it as well. If a student is willing to learn the material, any professor is more than willing to help make that happen. Beyond that, fellow students help each other to succeed. For example, there are tables in the dining halls that are merely for students in Foreign Language classes to get together and converse in the language for practice. There are student-created study sessions for just about anything. It is really easy to succeed and learn a lot at UW.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE being here! UW is such an excellent community to be a part of. There really is something for everyone here. The campus environment is a really special one--I don't think anyone could feel out of place at UW.

    Bang for the buck

Wyoming is an excellent school with an incredible sense of community. I could not ask for more from my classes, professors, advisors, extracurriculars, or peers. I give this category only four stars, though, because some departments are slightly less than they seem from the outside. For example, students wishing to study abroad should definitely do their research before coming to UW--the study abroad department is composed of just two people! Exchange programs are limited and it is hard to get the proper assistance from the department. However, UW has a gorgeous campus with countless benefits for students that I would strongly encourage taking UW into consideration.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Even if you are in a freshman dorm that has no common element among each resident (which is rare at UW), there are so many mini-communities within the University for each and every student to find a niche. Greek life is a strong, well-organized program at UW, and there are hundreds of other clubs and activities with which to involve yourself!

Great for these types of students

The most wonderful thing about the University of Wyoming is that it is the only University in the state of Wyoming. This means that the state governments put a lot of money into making it an excellent school. UW has extremely strong programs in Engineering and Applied Sciences, Education, Business, Arts and Sciences, and many more. Because it is a school that caters to ALL of Wyoming, every department and field of study is very good and extremely well-qualified to help any student achieve a career in his or her field of interest.

    Am learning a lot

The classes I have taken have overall been intellectually challenging. The 1000 level courses are definitely easy to do well in, but I still seem to learn a lot from them. As the class levels have increased, so has my work load--but also my intellect. I definitely feel like I am getting a solid education. Regarding the classes in my major, I feel I am being adequately prepared for a career--the assignments and knowledge base have all been directed towards what will help us in the pursuing a career and what will help us in the workplace. This has proven to be very beneficial thus far. In general, my professors have been very good--extremely knowledgeable in their respective subjects and very willing to help the students succeed.

    Am enjoying being here

I truly am enjoying being here. I love the atmosphere of the town--it is totally a college town. Everything in Laramie is centered toward UW--people love interacting with the students, cheering on the sports teams, and just supporting the college. I have found a great friendship base at a local church which has definitely played a major part in my happiness at this university. Even the church's main focus is creating a welcoming and fun environment for the college students--and they definitely do that. The size of the school is just right for me personally. It does not drown you in thousands of strange faces--there are generally familiar faces everywhere you go--but it is not so small that you are constantly surrounded by the same people. The town seems small at times--I admit it often seems like there is nothing good to do, but the University provides lots of good events such as Friday Night Fever and intramural sports that keep me entertained.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Wyoming has provided me a good education for cheaper than I would have paid going in-state. With a low tuition to start with and many scholarships provided, it has been very inexpensive for me. For residents of Wyoming, it is next to nothing. In my college search, I couldn't find a school cheaper than UW (besides community colleges). The only complaint I have about payment is that the dorms and cafeteria is expensive--but with so much other help, still manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend visiting UW. If you know someone who goes here, spend a weekend with them. I visited my older brother when I was a senior in high school and it opened my eyes to what really going to school here was like. I even went to a couple classes with him. It was definitely beneficial to see things from the inside.

Great for these types of students

UW is great for in-state students because of tuition and Wyoming pride, but it also is relatively inexpensive for out-of-state students as well. It is great for students who like the small, college town feel and for those who like to get involved--with both the school and community. It's a great engineering school and has a good pharmacy program as well. I would recommend it for students who are ready to embrace school pride and also for those who don't mind freezing temperatures!

    Am learning a lot

Personally I enjoy having the variety of both doctored professors, instructors and graduate students as my teachers. Those with doctorates may be extremely qualified and experienced in their field, but many of them are also older and more aloof from students such as I. Grad students on the other hand are going through the same issues of balancing classes, work and a social life just like me. Experience versus connection is something that is fully available here at UW. Also, whether my teacher has been a Dr., Prof. or Grad student I have learned a lot from them all.

    Am enjoying being here

I am from Texas, so the weather has been a large adjustment, the shopping for winter clothing was fun. But the howling winds and slippery ice-covered sidewalks are not. However, I have joined a few organizations such as RHA, the Swim Club and the Wyoming Honors Organization. The trick to enjoying your time in the small town of Laramie is to find your niche, make friends and spend time together. Since I am taking classes in the Honors Program I have a set group of study partners and living in the halls afford opportunities to meet people withOUT having to brave the weather. City life isn't too far away: Cheyenne, Loveland, Fort Collins and Denver are anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours away.

    Bang for the buck

The student population size, the beautiful landscape and the many opportunities for extracurricular envolvement have made my time at UW very enjoyable. UW also does many things differently, my Intro to Theater class is taught by a Dr. of Theater, and he's still producing plays! The outdoor programs are also very developed with the Medicine Bow National Park so close as well as the Vedauwoo rock formations. Since UW is Wyoming's only university, the state provides many scholarships and support in different areas. I got lucky in the tuition department because my mom lives in Wyoming, I got instate tuition. Very rare though.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you know what you're getting in to, visit Wyoming during the winter for the worst of the weather. If you can handle that, you'll do just fine. The halls are small yes, but if you tough it out now whatever you move to after college will seem just that much better.

Great for these types of students

Those who don't mind having to come up with their own entertainment. Laramie is great for outdoors activities, and small town shopping but not much else. Students need to be able to have fun with a small group of people and be flexible with weather conditions.

The University of Wyoming is amazing. Not only can you get an incredible, and improving education (nationally ranked) the teachers truly want students to succeed. Indeed, many teachers take student researchers as part of ongoing research projects.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply. The university if affordable, and the education you get is extremely competitive. The other students are friendly, and there is much to do on the campus.

    Academic Rigor

Many classes compare their curriculum to Ivy League school courses for their students to compare. The result? Our classes are more focused and intense than many at places like M.I.T. and Harvard.

    Dorm Life

The University just renovated the dorms, which are quite nice for the price you pay.

    Food and Dining

The food doesn't taste the best everyday (it's a cafeteria after all) but there's lots of it, all you can eat, anytime you go for a meal. The University also gives students $50, minimum, per semester to use at vending machines and campus food stores.

    What to do for fun

Lots. The university hires bands regularly, comedians (We had Chelsea Peretti last week), and acting groups. There are orchestral performances, gambling/game nights. Weekly raffles and competitions to win free things. There's multiple gyms, a billiard hall, movies, and for those who drink: lots of bars.

    Bang for the buck

The University is number 8 in the nation for education gained per cost of attendance, and climbing.

Great for these types of students

The campus is large enough that it provides, essentially, every major out there. Additionally, engineers (of literally all types, petroleum, civil, architectural, computer, electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, etc) is heavily supported. UW started as an engineering school.

    Clubs and Activities

There's such a huge variety. There's a club for everyone.

    Greek Life

There's a huge Greek following at the school; I think the last count was over 100 fraternities and sororities.

    Campus Safety

We have our very own police department on campus in addition to that of the city of Laramie. The campus is well lit, well patrolled, and there are emergency constant pylons throughout the campus. And, being in such a small town, pretty much everywhere is safe.

I believe the University of Wyoming is one of the very best colleges for students unwilling to pay the outragous costs of the big name schools. The University carefully uses its funds to support what matters most, the education, rather than over the top technology that no one uses or unnecessary landscaping. The University of Wyoming is a great investment in any student's future.

    Tips for prospective students

Before you commit to a bigger school, consider how many years salary you are spending by going there. Is the education you would receive there really worth the extra thousands of dollars? How much more will you be paid just because you attended a large school?

    Academic Rigor

I found the standard classes to be extremely easy; however, the classes actually linked to a major to be challenging but manageable. There are MANY options available for students seeking extra help in any subject.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms are currently outdated, but they are currently being renovated. The Internet system is terrible and I had several issues with my connection throughout the year.

    Food and Dining

Everyone complains about their school's cafeteria, but I found Washakie Dinning Center to be very well ballanced with taste, cost, and nutrition. They also had several consistant and varriable menu options for all types of diets. There is also a nutritionist that anyone can see.

    What to do for fun

Sadly, there is not much to do at the University. There is a standard gym and pool, but the school lacks other indoor entertainment. The school does have a wide varriaty of live shows to attend though that I did enjoy.

    Bang for the buck

You can't beat the education to cost ratio that this school provides.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    None that I know of.

Great for these types of students

Any student that realizes that the price does not always reflect the value.

    Clubs and Activities

There are several different groups for students to join, especially intramural sports.

    Greek Life

There is a Greek Life house, but I don't know anything about them.

    Campus Safety

Safety is top notch. They even have a Safe Ride program where volunteers will pick students up off campus if they are unable to drive for whatever reason. I never felt threatened on campus.

Lower tuition doesn't mean lower quality! The faculty and courses are great, the facilities are constantly upgrading to incorporate the newest technology, and the location is gorgeous. The winters are really long and windy, though.

    Tips for prospective students

Be careful with your travel! Snow storms can swoop down as early as August and continue through May. (June and July snow is rare, but does happen.) The roads into and out of town wind through mountainous passes, so they close pretty quickly in bad weather.

    Academic Rigor

I've never met a faculty member that wasn't happy to help me, but you still have to earn your grades here. There are plenty of other resources, like the Writing and Math labs, supplemental instruction sessions, and TA office hours, so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get the help you need. Also, cheating carries some pretty massive penalties; don't try it!

    Dorm Life

Dorm rooms here are cozy, so don't bring too much stuff, but doors respond to either a code or your student ID, so there aren't any keys to lose! There are kitchens if you feel like cooking, and common areas if you need some space. There is also bus service around campus, to all the parking lots, and to most of the local stores, so not having a vehicle or being unable to find a parking space shouldn't be a big deal.

    Food and Dining

There are several dining halls by the dorms, and the main campus has several cafes and coffee houses. There are also several fast food franchises in the Student Union or across the street from campus! The Union also has a convenience store if you just need an energy drink or snack for that intense study-session.

    What to do for fun

Laramie is a very outdoorsy location- you can go skiing, hiking, rock-climbing, fishing, hunting, whatever suits your fancy! We're also close enough to Fort Collins or Denver for a quick day trip if you're more for the big city, and there are tons of student organizations and clubs on campus.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is low, but you're still getting a quality education at UW. There's a great variety of classes and programs, and some of the faculty are the most brilliant people you will ever meet. Facilities are constantly being upgraded to fit the newest technology, and Student Health and Counseling services will keep you healthy and sane for pretty cheap.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I'm always drawn to Prexy's Pasture- it's this gigantic open space in the center of the main campus that just mostly grass and flowers. In the warm months people will be sunbathing, reading, playing sports, or just napping all across field. If there's snow, it'll be criss-crossed with footprints and dotted with snowmen, snow-angels, and snow-forts.

Great for these types of students

Great for second-year students or above. Laramie is a town that loves to have fun, and a lot of it is available, so you have to know how to buckle down and focus. Otherwise, you'll forget all about going to class!

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for almost everything. We've got Japanese board games like Go and Shogi, equestrian activities, computer science, religious and secular social groups, activism groups, and even a swing dance club. There are also regular events on Friday nights- everything from sketch comedy to musicians or free movie screenings!

    Greek Life

Greek Life here on campus is really proactive about keeping students safe and happy. They have an extensive Sexual Assault Prevention program, a lot of alcohol abuse prevention measures, and plenty of social events to ease the stress of all that homework.

    Campus Safety

After certain hours you have to scan your student ID to get into a lot of buildings, and the doors will lock automatically behind you. There are dozens of call boxes dotted across campus where you can call 911 in an emergency, which are all lit up bright blue at night. One thing to be careful of is ice and snow during the winter! The wind never stops blowing here, so even hand-rails and flat sidewalks get insanely slippery!

The university of Wyoming is a great school. I think that this school couldn't be better, whether it was the great outdoors or the teachers who actually care. The university of Wyoming is a great place to go to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

To students hopefully entering this university. You are in for an experience. You should embrace every challenge presented, and just be ready for the next one.

    Academic Rigor

This school is quite competitive. While the teachers do try their best to accommodate everyone, the class sizes are very big. However, teachers are willing to give you any extra help if you ask for it.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is very nice. I couldnt believe how much the RA's were willing to help you or make you feel comfortable at school. They make sure that everyone is having a good time and studying, but also that everyone is adjusting to life away from their parents. The dorms are also recently renovated, and always clean.

    Food and Dining

The food is actually pretty good. There's a cafe called Washakie, and for cafeteria food its delicious. There's always so many choices, the only bad thing is the breakfast/lunch/dinner rushes. Everyone wants some food, and if you don't get there before the rush you should hope that not everything is eaten already.

    What to do for fun

At this university there are many things to do for fun. Whether it was going to the football games, basketball games, or just going out for the first week of freshman orientation, this school set up time for all the students to try to get to know each other and make a stronger community.

The University of Wyoming shows many of the same characteristics that the state of Wyoming has. You can party on weekends if you would like, but for weekends there are not a ton of options besides hanging with a group of friends. Make sure to bring warm clothes because winter lasts from late October to mid-March.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Wyoming is a great school, especially for its price. Its cheaper out-of-state tuition then most schools are in-state. The professors are good and will work with you. If you can handle the cold weather that Wyoming has, then UW is a great school, mountains are only a 20 minute drive and Laramie definitely has a whole different feel from anywhere else.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on your major. I chose business and the first introductory level classes I felt were a joke. I did homework about twice per week and had a 4.0 my first two semesters. However, I know a lot of students in nursing, and that major at least the classes they took had them doing homework 5 to 6 times a week. They were always busy doing homework. Also engineering is a rigorous major so Academic Rigor all depends on the major.

    Dorm Life

All the dorms are pretty newly redone, with Downey hall being the most recent. Dorm sizes are pretty small, so don't expect to be doing activities. I'd suggest getting a loft kit for both beds. The worst dorm was White hall, but that is being redone next year. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited in the dorms, however to see drugs or alcohol is not uncommon in the dorms. Most RA's are very good and not super strict which is great. Make sure you get out and socialize even if you don't want to because take it from someone who experienced it. Having a floor that no one knows each other sucks. Even just keeping your door open when your there will help!

    Food and Dining

Washakie Dining Center. The place where you will eat most of your meals if you stay in the dorms. Washakie has many options, a specialty pizza place, mongolian grill, grand grill, cookout type foods (hamburgers hotdogs), vegetarian, and a specialty place (ranges from Meatloaf to Stir Frye). The food is better than most dining centers, however it does get old, especially when they don't serve their best stuff very often. The best things to get are Pesto Pizza, Ham on Grilled Cheese Sandwich, and Giros when they have any of those better stock up!

    What to do for fun

Laramie is a medium sized town, however it does not offer a lot to do. Definitely go to the major Wyoming sporting events such as UW football games and basketball games because there fun and both teams are on the rise. There is a cool bowling alley which is decently priced. The mountains are 15-20 minutes away and are a place that is visited frequently when the weather is nice. Other than that, find a group of friends that is just fun to hangout with because Laramie doesn't have a ton to offer. UW has events every Friday that are fun they bring in magicians and other stuff like that. Other than that most kids drink and party so if thats what your looking for, Wyoming definitely offers that.

    Bang for the buck

UW is by far the best University experience for the amount you pay. Out-of-state tuition to UW is cheaper than basically an other equivalent college's In-state tuition. Don't let the cheap price make you think this university is crap, there are many excellent professors that want to see you succeed. Also the sports teams are on the up and up which is a good sign. UW was rated very high in the last bang for your buck college ranking in the Princeton Review!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are so many that you will find as you stay your 4 years here. Some of the more common are to throw pine cones in a statue of a dinosaurs mouth the week of finals and you will pass all of them. There are a lot of haunted places around campus and Laramie that need to be explored. But I wont give them all away, thats the fun of being here, gotta discover!

Great for these types of students

Students who can endure the cold, Laramie has some brutal winter that lasts a 6 months. Students who are rednecks, you will find a group of kids like you if you love mullets and drinking. Students who love to be outside, i know i said the winters are harsh but they lead to some of the most beautiful spring and summers. With the mountains 15 minutes away its always a great place to go.

    Clubs and Activities

Intramural are the best part of UW. They are run to perfection by the head coordinator. There are a ton of different sports with the winners getting free t-shirts. Also almost every sport is reffed and cheating is not allowed.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is pretty small and unimportant. Greek students think they are extremely cool and act like there the best but everyone knows that most of them are creeps and the douchebags. So if your looking to join a frat or sorority for the greatest 4 years ever, you may want to keep looking. Rumor has it the greek system is falling apart and UW will eventually end it and turn all the houses into some much needed parking.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is very nice. There are emergency kiosks all over and campus police is top of the line. Campus police is more annoying then anything trying to catch under aged minors under the influence. But campus is 99% safe.

The University of Wyoming is a lot of fun and provides a good education for how much it costs. They have good undergraduate programs in many areas to study. The only big problem is the weather and the lack of activities.

    Tips for prospective students

I would prepare to be able to find stuff to do that you will enjoy. Also prepare for the weather, it is pretty nasty in the winter months.

    Academic Rigor

In my degree field, which is engineering, the rigor in academics is very difficult. I have heard it is pretty easy for people with other majors. The tests are difficult, just be sure to get as many of the in class points as possible, they help your grade a lot.

    Dorm Life

I enjoyed the dorms actually even though the one I lived in at the time was pretty crappy and the rooms are very tiny. It is a great opportunity to meet a bunch of fun people. They are close to class and anything that you need really.

    Food and Dining

There are many places that you can choose to eat at on and off campus. After awhile though these options get boring and you feel like you've eaten everywhere too many times. The Washakie Dining Center which most freshmen eat at is not awful, but get boring very quickly.

    What to do for fun

There really isn't a lot to do for fun which means most kids end up just partying on the weekends. The school always has an event that they put on every Friday, which is sometimes entertaining and sometimes not. If you can find stuff to do with other people you will be alright because it's very easy to hang out with other people.

    Bang for the buck

I believe it is a great bang for the buck especially if you are coming from in state. They offer many scholarships that you don't even have to apply for. It is one of the cheaper schools but they also have a great education program.

Great for these types of students

I believe it is great mostly for the types of students that like to be social. If you are not very social it may get boring real quick. It is also great for anybody who enjoys nature.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs and activities for almost anything that you enjoy doing and if there isn't already a club or activity that you enjoy doing you can easily create it. There are also a bunch of intramural sports which can be fun for anybody.

    Greek Life

Greek life really isn't a big deal. Some people will join and others wont and it doesn't matter at all. Greek life is really just a preference of what you want to be doing in your spare time, but it really isn't a social standard.

    Campus Safety

I do not see anything wrong with the campus safety.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're looking for a D1 school that is verry affordable, Wyoming is a great choice. There is a great range of courses, classes and majors that are offered as well as a small community.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes and courses are difficult but they become very beneficial through later classes.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great, you are able to pick your roommate if you choose or they will select one that have similar interests and life style. they are very clean and two of the halls were refurbished within the last 4 years.

    Food and Dining

Washakie dining center is a good dinning place that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a late night snack. They are open most of the day and give a variety of foods to chose from every day.

    What to do for fun

The University of Wyoming offers intramural sports every semester as well as fraternities and sororities setting up game nights and things of that nature almost every week. There is always something to do on campus.

    Bang for the buck

A very inexpensive D1 school especially for residents. Tuition is very cheap as well as a low living expense.

Great for these types of students

    Clubs and Activities

Though Wyoming does not offer much diversity, the University of Wyoming sure does represent most cultures in the World with its diverse student alumni.

    Tips for prospective students

the university is good; it has a beautiful campus, nice friendly people, good teachers and a great surrounding community. the weather is a bit of a downside, and the surrounding community however is small if that is a concern.

    Tips for prospective students

get involved as much as possible, and bring some warm clothes, the winters are rough. attending class is another big part.

    Academic Rigor

teachers are surprising thorough in their lectures, and they expect you to know your stuff come exam time. however the exams are also fair, so if you do study hard you will be fine.

    Dorm Life

dorms are fairly plain, but the people and ras are great. many fun times to be had, not to mention the food at washakie is not bad either.

    Food and Dining

all you can eat, always bound to have something you want. the food towards the end of the year starts to get slightly boring, after eating similar or the same thing for months, but you can always get creative by combining things. some things could use a little seasoning (salt and pepper can generally cure), and the vegetables could to be cooks more.

    What to do for fun

laramie is situated in a beautiful area for camping, rock climbing, skiing, hunting, and pretty much whatever other outdoor activities takes your fancy. the university tries to get concerts and other shows in fairly often, although not as much as in bigger cities. however denver, just to the south, has shows and many activities if your willing to road trip. the parties in laramie are extremely fun, and inter-mural sports and athletics are pretty big.

    Bang for the buck

laramie is extremely cheap for a university, its out of state tuition is lower than many instates for many people, all the while offering just about everything you would expect from a institution.

Great for these types of students

great for anybody that can handle the cold winters, people with a love for the great outdoors will find so much to do, and even you like to stay inside there are things for you too.

    Campus Safety

    Tips for prospective students

get to know the area if you are considering wyoming- the weather can be a challenge some days, but if you're up to meeting friendly people wyoming is definitely the place.

    Academic Rigor

i am challenged by my classes to the point where it is necessary for me to study. i believe this is an appropriate level. however, for more difficult majors, a different school may be the choice for you.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are a convenient place to live, but just like anywhere else they may have some strict rules students do not want to have to live by. it is a chance to be social and meet new people; the residence advisers are kind and including of their residents, but sometimes there is drama that can be a drag, as with any other school.

    Food and Dining

the dining is pretty good here, but just as with any other school it can get to be old news to eat there every night.

    What to do for fun

laramie is a college town so there are a lot of people who are college age to be around. there are a few shops, and the university is great at sponsoring events for the students. however, if a prospective student wants to do a lot of shopping or events outside of the university, this may not be the place to go.

    Bang for the buck

the university of wyoming has been ranked “a best value” by the princeton review and several departments are ranked the best in the u.s. also, there are opportunities available here because it is the only university in the state. there is a sense of community on-campus and in the town of laramie.

    Tips for prospective students

to get the most out of any experience you have to join in the community and take advantage of the resources and opportunities while you are in school. maintain good time management by putting the main priorities first. take notes in all classes because you never know when the professor is going to say something that will end up on a test, it is easier to remember during a test if you have heard and written, and after all you (or your parents) did pay for this privilege to have a seat in the class to learn things you did not know before. set aside time to exercise as it will help you healthy, blood flow to your brain, and help you sleep. try not to stay up too late to cram because once you start a pattern of sleep it is hard to break out of it. also, eat healthy foods because that will keep you from getting very sick as colds move through the student population. take it from me – you will get sick trying to survive on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for too long. if you feel a lack of community, which people that do not live on campus may feel, then join a club. you only get out what you put into any situation. try as best as you can to get a real professor for a class instead of a graduate student.

    Academic Rigor

you may find the university of wyoming is easy to get into due to the fact that it accepts the majority of people that apply. however, you have to realize just to keep its enrollment up as the number of people that apply may not be very large (as wyoming is the least populated state in the united states) the university may need to do this. also, just because it may be easy to get in does not mean it is easy to graduate from this university. several departments are ranked the best in the u.s. and other schools have taken field trips out to wyoming to take advantage of the resources we have in wyoming.

    Dorm Life

take this with a grain of salt because i never lived in the dorms, i only saw them on a campus tour. the university has enough rooms to accommodate those that do want to live on-campus. if you are a freshman, you are required to stay in the dorms. they have recently demolished old barracks that were used as single living quarters and built new housing to replace them that have just been opened for application. they have also put in new signals at a main street crossing that used to be very difficult to cross due to the size of the intersection. there are multiple bus lines that go around at regular times to get you to places on and off campus. however, the campus is walkable within twenty minutes from most anywhere you need to get to and biking is popular almost year around. there is a bicycle library where you can check out a bike for the semester’s use. if you are a greek society member or an honor student, there is separate housing you can live in. laundry facilities are available in each housing complex (of which there are several) and computing facilities are close by. there is housing that is family friendly. in general though, off campus housing is less expensive than on-campus housing or a better value as you can get more space off-campus for the same price on-campus.

    Food and Dining

again - take this with a grain of salt because i don't eat on-campus much. you do not have to purchase a meal place if you live on-campus, but it is probably more necessary if you live in the dorms. it is not necessary in most of the on-campus housing which has a full kitchen in each unit. you can purchase the meal plan even if you do not live on-campus. the meal plan is fairly expensive, so generally people do not purchase it if they can get away with it. the food is generally good though. there are a variety of spots on-campus to get food and a slight variety of types of food. also, there are restaurants right across from campus.

    What to do for fun

there is also always something going on, especially when school is in session. of course, there are various clubs to join. almost every department has a club along. on most wednesdays there is a concert on-campus. there is a free movie on fridays and sometimes they have a triple feature night. the union there is always pool or ping pong.

the fine arts department hosts various concerts, plays, ballets, and musicals. there are comedy acts, grammy award winning musical acts, and various speakers that come to campus. if you are a student you get a discount on all events and sometimes they are free. occasionally there are special activities planned such as free ice skating at the local recreation center, laser tag, and an international talent show or dinners. relaxation sessions are held around final exam times where there are massages, games to play, and free snacks.

for the more active types there are various sports clubs or intramural sports. the gym has different exercise classes such as yoga, pilates, zumba, and classes that target certain muscle groups. there is an on-campus climbing wall where they have an annual competition and a swimming pool.

there is also an outdoor program where you can rent equipment for various activities such as snow shoeing, skiing, rock climbing, camping, biking, canoeing, fly-fishing, and kayaking. they organize trips, even to other states, within this program where you can ski or snowboard, rock climb, or bike with other adventure seekers.

every year there is an “alternative spring break”, where you can volunteer in local community on issues ranging from the environment, social work (i.e. women’s rights, hunger, homelessness, education), and animal issues in foreign countries such as costa rica, jamaica, dominican republic, belize, but also at home in san francisco, the florida everglades, and southern utah.

    Bang for the buck

depending on the state you live in, your out-of-state tuition at the university of wyoming may lower than your in-state tuition in your home state. it is very possible to graduate debt-free from this university, so your degree will pay for itself quickly after you graduate. there are a lot of resources and opportunities available on-campus to take advantage. for example, the career services office helps you pick a major, find out what to do with it, find a job, and hosts job fairs where they have people that will review your resume. there is a non-traditional student office, a multicultural office, and lgbt center to support special populations of students. i was able to receive many scholarships for this school and all were easily processed.
the university of wyoming has been ranked “a best value” by the princeton review and several departments are ranked the best in the u.s. also, there are opportunities available here because it is the only university in the state. coming to wyoming, being such a small state in population, gives you have many (and possibly far-reaching) connections. other schools have taken field trips out to wyoming to study its environmental resources. many events, including grammy award winning acts, are discounted for students or even free sometimes and many have free food.

this could be something you could put on a resume.

Great for these types of students

generally anyone, but specific student populations include non-traditional students and particularly students interested in environmental issues because there are many majors that center around the study of the environment. you better be able to deal with cold weather, incessant wind, and small towns (there is basically only one degree of separation between you and everyone else),

    Clubs and Activities

there is a club within most departments that may arrange trips around the area. however, there is a book worth of clubs from a to z across campus including local clubs like anime viewing club and wider reaching organizations like amnesty international.

    Greek Life

    Am learning a lot

So far I haven't gotten to take many courses I'm really interested in, but hopefully as my education continues I will learn more.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is great and the town is fantastic, but it's hard to make friends since most people there already know people.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a great price for what you get. Although housing seems a little expensive, it's the cheapest option.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to register as early as possible. GO TO CLASS. I thought I knew things so I would miss classes, but it ruined me in the end. Academics are very important.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Wyoming is one of the top schools in this category and when compared with other school it really isn't that bad. I'm out of state so I really understand the value of a dollar in terms of tuition rates.

    Tips for prospective students

Look into the degree you want to get and schedule a visit. When you know about the things you're interested in you make a better decision about what's right for you.

    Am learning a lot

I've just completed my first semester at the University of Wyoming and I couldn't be happier! There are so many wonderful professors here who really do care and make students actually want to learn. I've learned several new things in my classes that have made me eager to learn more. Truly, I feel that I have learned so much in just my first semester of college here; I cannot wait to see what I've learned at the terminus of my education.

    Am enjoying being here

When I was in high school, everyone always said that Laramie and the University of Wyoming were boring. However, I find the exact opposite to be true. Laramie is a very welcoming community and the university goes out of its way to make sure there are a plethora of activities for students on campus. I'm really enjoying Laramie and I'm so glad I decided to go to the University of Wyoming. It's a wonderful place to be.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Wyoming gives students a high quality education for a very low cost. As a resident of the state, I'm only paying about $13,000--before scholarships--and learning a lot. Similarly, my roommate, who is from Maryland, chose to come here because the out-of-state tuition here is cheaper than her in-state tuition in Maryland. It's a fantastic, low-cost school.

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the campus and the town before making your decision final. I love Laramie and the University of Wyoming, but I'm sure it's not the right fit for everyone. Find an older student who has been around campus for awhile. Get him to give you his honest opinion.

Great for these types of students

It's great for studious students--again, a very high quality education and there are a myriad of resources on campus to help students learn. It's also wonderful for outdoorsy people. The Laramie area has so many places that are full of natural beauty.

I gave this 4 stars because I think that the teachers are really there to help me learn, and they teach a lot of the content in detail. I think that a part that I really like UW (University of Wyoming) is that most of the teachers are actually teachers, and the good teachers incorporate all kinds of activities into the curriculum. The bad teachers are why this category is not 5 star. Some of the graduates are good, but others don't teach as well as a teacher would. In return there are various learning tools to help like math lab, TA's, or even some of the organizations that help me out when the bad teachers cannot. (Most of the good teachers here are welcome to having visitors and even encourage it so that they can help us (the students) learn.)

    Am enjoying being here

Now the reason that being here is 3 stars is because it is hard to sometimes find things to do. Of course there is the bowling alley and the different events that UW offers. The pros of the university is its different events like football, the different clubs, intramural sports, and having various artists or performers at the college. There are also various outdoor activities to do here like shooting, fishing, or snowboarding/skiing. My first year here I went to see Lewis Black and a College Humor performance. The downside to that is when you aren't in an event/club and you have no homework, it is hard to find something to do. Most of the people here either play videogames, watch movies, or more productively find a job that usually interferes with school. Besides the job market being small here, few managers know what its like to be in college and some that don't that put students into hard situations.

    Bang for the buck

I think that this is a good school especially if you want quality education for a cheaper price. UW offers many majors and is sometimes cheaper for out-of-state students to come here than to go to an in-state college where they are from. So on top of offering many majors, it is fairly cheaper than other schools. The quality of course I think is good because of the fact that there are more teachers teaching as opposed to graduates. The fact is you are paying TEACHERS to teach as opposed to someone that is now getting on their sea legs to teach.

    Tips for prospective students

There are always the classics like make sure your on time, and make homework a priority and all of that good stuff, but here are my good tips. Get to know people. They will do more than just point you in the direction of the good teachers which is key because that is only the beginning of college.
Have a plan financially. I came in with Hathaway and some various scholarships and I didn't plan which hits like a bag-o-bricks. Know if you need to get a job or more scholarships before you run out of money.
Know your limits. I came in trying to get as many classes done as fast as I could. I passed, but the stress was so much, and now I know I can only handle a maximum of five classes because I can't split my mind any more than that.
Stick to these guidelines and you should have a good start.

Great for these types of students

UW is great for students that like small towns. Laramie isn't a very small town, but you can walk around campus or town and usually spot people that you know. It is great for those that like to go shooting because there is a lot of open space. There are some places around Laramie where you can snowmobile, go 4-wheeling, snowboard/ski, or fish so for the outdoor people, this is a really nice place to go. Also it is really nice because 90% of the people that I have met are laid back and outgoing, all you have to do is start a conversation.

My classes are really great. I've only had issues with one but it's not a required class for my major or my core classes. It's just the teacher but the content is good. I learn a lot in class and outside of class.

    Am enjoying being here

At first I didn't love it here because I didn't have any friends that came here with me. However, getting involved is so easy and fun. I've met so many people through the organizations I joined.

    Bang for the buck

Very cheap school even for out of state students. They also offer lots of scholarships.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for all the scholarships they offer. They have money just sitting in the bank to give students. Visit the school. It's got a great campus but visit anyways.

Great for these types of students

If you like a small town but a close-knit college community it might be for you. They offer many options for degrees and resource centers to get help all over campus.

    Will learn a lot

I give this four stars based on the things all my friends have learned up there. I have been to a couple classes, though, and I haven't forgotten anything yet, so that's gotta count for something! A couple of the classes don't really teach much as far as my friends are concerned, but for the most part, the professors are nice, the classes are meaningful, and you learn a lot.

    Will enjoy being here

I absolutely love it there! The town is small, but the people are extremely friendly. It's similar to Olde Town Arvada, if you've ever been there. There are some great restaurants (Sweet Melissa: A vegetarian cafe with fantastic food, whether you're a vegetarian or not. The Library: Great ambiance, good people, delicious food, and it's right on campus.) and a couple gaming stores and other fun places to go. There isn't a King Soopers, which disappointed me, but there is both a WalMart and a Safeway.
The weather is less than ideal, for me at least--lots of snow, very cold and windy during the school year--but the people and the experience of being there is definitely worth the sad weather. And even if it does snow, the only place you really NEED to drive to is WalMart, and there's a Safeway in town, so that's no big deal.
And if you're not sure, definitely go visit!

    Bang for the buck

While $11,000 is a lot of money (and that's not counting the dorms or food--with that it's about $23,000) for out-of-state students, that's about the same (if not a little bit less) as in-state tuition for colleges like CSU. There are also plenty of scholarships for Colorado students. The Rocky Mountain Scholarship gives you an anual scholarship based on achievement in school and scores on the SAT or ACT. The Western Ungergraduate Exchange (WUE) gives an out-of-state student 150% in-state tuition, instead of paying out-of-state tuition. There are scholarships for being a first generation student, scholarships for your specific field of study, and the work study program which provides students who qualify with jobs on campus. If you qualify for the Honors Program you may also be granted scholarships there. And don't, of course, forget your FAFSA, which could give you more money from the government. So, all in all, not too much money when all financial aid is put together.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to email or call the school with questions. I've probably emailed the poor Admissions Office 50 times asking them anything and everything I had to ask. They have, however, always replied with friendly and helpful answers that aided me in completing my application and such.
Also, apply as soon as you can. UW has a rolling application, which means you can apply whenever you want, and as soon as all your application materials are received, you can expect a reply in as little as four weeks. Then, if you want to go there, you don't have to worry about applying to three or four (or however many) schools just in case. There is no essay on the application so it takes less than an hour to complete and then you're done with that.
Some of the scholarships also have an apply by deadline. For example, to be considered for the WUE, you must submit all your application materials by the beginning of December.
Finally, don't worry about how to apply for scholarships too much. A lot of the scholarships (the WUE and Rocky Mountain Scholarships) only require your application to apply for the scholarship. And if you have any questions about scholarships and how to apply, like I said, don't be afraid to email or call them with questions.

Great for these types of students

-Students who want to live in a small town (those who love small towns or are ready to get out of big cities).
-Students who love the cold (believe me, it's cold there).
-Students who love the out-doors. There is a great national park near Laramie (Vedauwoo--which is actually pronounced: VE-duh-voo).
Wyoming is really a great place for anyone. The school offers a lot of visiting days where you can check out the dorms, the cafeteria (Washakie), and the classrooms. A lot of the times you are allowed to sit in on classes (one time I was stuck there for five days because my bus got cancelled and I got to go to some classes with my friends. The professors were great about it!) with the other students. Just go check it out.

I am a current Criminal Justice student and I am certainly learning a lot here! I mostly took general requirements my first year so my classes were kind of large, but the professors definitely provided opportunity for all of us to learn and gave plenty of study aids and office hours for students to succeed in their classes. I also did some music courses here at UW and learned SO much from the music faculty, they all know a lot about what they are teaching and are focused on their students.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! I am from a smaller town and I have heard people from larger ones say there is NOTHING to do, but I think there is plenty! UW offers endless clubs and organizations to be involved in and Laramie may not be the coolest town, but with Denver just down the road, weekend trips with friends can provide for the big city fun some people need! Also UW provides other entertainment including Friday Night Fever every Friday which consists of varying activities throughout the year including a 24 hour dance marathon, movie nights with movies that haven't been released on DVD yet, and poker nights!

    Bang for the buck

Being an In-State student I am attending UW with a full-ride scholarship. But really I have met lots of students from out of state that are attending UW because of its extremely cheap prices and good education.

    Tips for prospective students

Schedule a visit! I came for a visit before I made my final decision on attending UW and it was awesome! My guide really knew what he was talking about and it is always good to get a feel for the place you are going to be spending the next four years of your life!

Great for these types of students

In-State students for sure due to the Hathaway scholarship and other scholarships offered from Wyoming and even some out of state student who want to save some money!

UW is as cheap as it gets and the education you get is worth so much more. The state pays an average of $14,000 a student each year and housing is reasonable.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let partying get in the way of your education. But don't forget to have fun either. Do intramural sports or join a club. Get out of your dorm room or house and meet people that's what makes college fun.

Definitely! UW has many fantastic professors, as well as plenty of learning opportunities to go beyond, such as the honors program and studying abroad. Also, many of the professors are there to help. You'll find many of them who had experience outside of the classroom to have maximum knowledge in their subject. Overall, I feel as though I will be receiving a fantastic and thorough education.

    Will enjoy being here

The University of Wyoming has a small town feel, but being on campus doesn't feel like it! The campus provides such a wide reach of clubs, everything from religious study groups to active community service organizations. There is always some activity being planned, including laser tag or concerts. For the sports fan, there's also a club or intramural for almost every sport out there. Overall, the entire city has a fantastic feel for it and there's something for everybody.

    Bang for the buck

I come from instate, and UW provided the best deal in terms of wanting to attend a university. UW provides scholarships, many based on financial need and also talent within the music or theatre performances. Also, if one is from out of state, he can receive some great benefits if a parent is an alumni of the college. Overall, even UW is cheap, it provides many great opportunities to get involved, succeed and learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused on studies, but also get involved and join clubs! Take advantage of every opportunity given to you.

Good Educational Opportunities. Period. The key is to get involved. They offer plenty of free tutoring, homework help, and class supplimental instruction, so just do your research and ask around because someone will point you in the right direction. Also the professors and T.A.'s are always willing to give you their time, all it take is for you to ask them for the help.

    Am enjoying being here

The little town of Laramie isn't too exciting; however, UW is known as a party school so there is usually something to do, even if you don't drink. UW offers plenty of free or cheap activities as well and Laramie does have a few thing to do with friends. Also, the town is only about an hour away from Fort Collins, CO, two hours from Denver, and 45 minutes from Cheyenne, WY, so if your looking for a bigger city to hang out in. Those of us who have lived in Wyoming for years are quite used to the need to travel to find something to do, so I think the rest of you can do the same.

    Bang for the buck

Top rated school for a cheap but quality education. No questions asked. If you want something cheaper your going to have to go to a community college or just stay in state. They offer plenty of scholarships as well, you just need to take the initiative to apply.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask questions, go to class, try new things, and take initiative. If your failing a class, it is most likely because you are doing the work or asking for help. It is really that easy.

Great for these types of students

Everyone. So bring the diversity. The more diversity we bring to UW the more Wyoming will open up to more ideas.
