    Am learning a lot

College is completely different than high school, in a good way I'd say. After my first year at VI, I have definitely learned a lot. The classes are usually pretty small, which is nice because I get easily distracted. The professors are really great about offering you help in and out of class. They really care.

    Am enjoying being here

    I absolutely love it here.

In general people are VI are very nice. The professors often go out of their way to help you in any way that they can. Some of them even invite you over for a home cooked meal! (Always rewarding for a college student.)

Every town has a few sketchy areas, but for the most part Bristol really is a nice place to live. There are tons of resturants and stores at Exit 7 and historical downtown and State Street are within walking distance of VI.

    Bang for the buck

I will admit, VI is rather expensive. The thing you have to rememeber is that it IS old. There are a few things that could use some serious renovations, but this summer (2011) the Science hall is being completely renovated along with the bathrooms in Main. Our President is hard at work making improvements each day.

We have an incredible president who is kicking butt and taking names! She gets things done, does them well, and still finds time to attend games, horse shows, and events. Mind blowing!

    Tips for prospective students

The dorms do not have air conditioning (one of the down sides of being in such old buildings) for fear that it will cause a power outage, so I recommend getting some serious fans (which really doesn't make much sense to me because they have to be plugged in also but whatever..) for the summer months. Once it gets cooler in the fall and all the way until about the last month of school you do not really need them since the weather is nice/cold. You can get a window unit if you have asthma or allergies and receive a doctor's note.

Go to convocations when you can throughout the year, so you don't have to worry about having enough credits when graduation comes.

Great for these types of students

    family oriented people

people who easily get a long with others

people who enjoy art, the mountains, small towns or that are mellow and kind of laid back.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a whole lot as I attend this college.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something to do between the intermural sports that are hosted, the plays being done by students, and the random student sponsored events that are done.

    Bang for the buck

This is a fairly old college and the buildings are definately showing it, however there are a lot of renevations being done and more planned for the future.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a fan because there is currently no air conditioning system in the dorms.

Great for these types of students

This college has good equestrian, photography, and english departments in particular.

Virginia Intermont is a small close knit family. Every body knows every body, for the most part, and professors will often go out of their way to provide additional resources and help. Just like any college, it is what you make of your time there.

    Tips for prospective students

Treat others the way you want to be treated and use common sense. VI is a small school, so everyone (students, teachers, and administration) knows your buisness in a short amount of time.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the courses are challenging and engaging. After you get pat your core, the real fun begins, even if it is difficult. The professors will push you because they know what you are truly capable of.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty large compared to a lot of other colleges I have visited. The major downfall is that there is no air conditioning. In the late fall and spring this is not really an issue, but during the hotter months it can be miserable. If you have asthma or allergies you can maintain a form with housing that allows you to bring an AC window unit and get it installed. Since the dorms are so old, the electrical is not made to support AC window units in each room. You are more than welcome to bring as many fans as you would like though. (One would think this requires as much power as a window unit....) There are also community bathrooms. You never know what the bathroom will look like.

    Food and Dining

Food at VI is not horrible. Some days are better than others in the dining hall, but its edible. We also have a cafe in the student center that will pretty much cook up whatever you wish. (Burgers, sandwiches, omelettes..ect)

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of activities provided by student activities each month. There are bowling allies, NASCAR and drag racing, a movie theater and drive in movie, restaurants, concerts, Rhythm and Roots festival, State Street, frozen yogurt, Bristol White Sox games..ect. A lot of people attend our sporting events and support our athletes.

    Bang for the buck

It's a little more buck for your bang. I'm not really sure why it costs so much other than the historical upkeep.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are tunnels that go underneath the campus. Back in the day when VI was an all girls school, the girls had to travel through the tunnels to the swimming pool.

Great for these types of students

If you are looking for a small school, VI is a pretty good one. Class sizes are usually very small and professors will get to know you as a person by name.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lot of clubs and activites going on. If you don't find what you are interested in, you can start your own club, like Paintball and recycling did over the past 2 years.

    Campus Safety

Security guards are on duty 24/7. The do rounds and are very available.

A great school for individualized attention. The campus is okay but it will be even better with planned renovations. The staff is wonderful and always looking to help students!

    Tips for prospective students

Be comfortable with being yourself and be prepared for a very tight community. This place is just like home.

    Academic Rigor

It varies depending on the classes and teachers you have.

    Dorm Life

The rooms are big compared to some of the others that I've seen at other major schools (NCSU, UNC) but the bathrooms (community style) have some to be desired.

    Food and Dining

The food has gotten much better since I started here and I hope it keeps improving!

    What to do for fun

State Street (5 minute walk) has tons of little stores and coffee shops. Exit 7 is also really popular with food and a movie theater. Johnson City is only 30 minutes away which is good for shopping. Gatlinburg and Boone are both an hour and a half away which are nice for weekend getaways.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Vera's room is a common spot everyone wants to visit at least once. She's our resident friendly ghost!

Great for these types of students

Academic focused but also likes to indulge in fun activities sponsored by our Student Activities Board

    Clubs and Activities

A lot of different groups ranging from religious affiliation to photography and equine!

    Greek Life

    No Greek Life

    Campus Safety

    The security guards are awesome!

Virginia Intermont is a small but friendly private liberal arts college. The School offers a decent selection in courses and majors. Along with academics, the school and its surroundings offer plenty of activities for young adults.

    Tips for prospective students

The dorms are your home away from home but you do not need to bring everything. Over packing causes clutter and disorganization (remember you will have to live with another human being).

    Academic Rigor

The courses offer a decent amount of out-of-class work, though it's considered quality over quantity. The student is in charge of getting the work done on their own time. Partying is fun but with an average of three to five classes a day it is easy to get behind on work and most teachers will not offer chances to make up the work.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms in the Main building are large and spacious but there is not elevator, just stairs. The dorms in Intermont hall are somewhat small but have a nice view and an elevator. Both buildings have common bath areas and are separated by sex by floor.

    Food and Dining

Virginia Intermont does not offer much variety in food but the food they offer is usually good and its all you can eat. The school offers a choice of two or three meals a day depending on the purchased meal plan.

    What to do for fun

The school is located within walking distance of the Virginia/Tennessee state line/state street. There are a lot of restaurants, antique stores and art galleries along state street along with other small hometown shops. Bristol is part of the Tri Cities (Kingsport/Johnson City) and theses place offer other shopping and activities options.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus was built in the late 1800's and is haunted. No one has ever been harmed but the spirits are known to be pranksters.

Great for these types of students

    Great of outgoing, determined students.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a school Newspaper and a Green Club. There is a SGA and Poetry Club along with many others.

    Campus Safety

There are almost zero crimes on campus. Security is on campus 24/7 and is reachable by mobile all of the time.
