At Tech the professors have experience in the fields in which they teach so not only do the provide book lessons, but also life lessons. As a double major in Communication and Theater Arts and a Spanish minor i get a very diverse exposure to different classes. Within both my majors the departments ask for students to take classes within the major that is outside of our concentration, which provides students with a chance to get a glimpse of different aspects of the major, and even if there is no interest in the other aspects, students can develop an appreciation for the other parts of the major.

    Am enjoying being here

Virginia Tech is great. I have met so many amazing people from so many different backgrounds which have exposed me to things I may have never encountered. Also I have gotten the chance to travel to different colleges through my involvement with the Women's Rugby team, which I probably would have never experienced.

    Bang for the buck

College is a huge expense, but worth it. Tech offers many ways to help pay for the expense which is very helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

Its a big campus, but get involved and it will become so much smaller and you'll be able to find your life long friends.

Great for these types of students

Any there is something for everyone at Tech! Tech has over 500 clubs and organizations for students to get involved in, and there are plenty of opportunities to get a job on and off campus as well.

There is such a wide range of classes available to take at Virginia Tech. Think of anything and the university will have a class that focuses on that idea or is similar to it. Most classes are very engaging and the teachers really care about the students and want them to learn the material.

    Am enjoying being here

Although the campus may be somewhat in the middle of nowhere, there are many activities both on and off campus for the students to get involved with, including jobs, clubs, and movies. Also, since there are so many people attending the university, you are bound to meet people that will become your close friends or who will change your life.

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Tech aims at providing quality education at an affordable rate, and they accomplish this task excellently.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be intimidated by the size of the campus; as your first year goes by, you'll find that the campus actually gets smaller and smaller. If you're bringing a car to campus, make sure you follow the parking rules because the cops over here really are out to catch students that break those rules. Make sure you space your classes out accordingly so that you can eat, rest, and get to the classroom on time. Finally, get involved with something, anything; you will meet so many new people and make a ton of connections and it will make your first year transition much smoother and make college more enjoyable.

Great for these types of students

Virginia Tech is the number one architecture school in the country, so attend this college if you're planning on majoring in Architecture. They have a superb engineering program as well.

The faculty is very knowledgable and is intent on helping you succeed in whatever major you may choose.

I enjoy so much being on my own on this beautiful campus with a very traditional college environment. I would never trade my experiences here, It is also very easy getting around since the whole town is pretty much the campus. Not to mention it is the most beautiful campus I have ever seen.

    Bang for the buck

Although it is a bit costly for me because I am out of state. I have learned so much. It is totally worth it, and I will work as hard as I can to continue my academic career here in Blacksbur, Virginia.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont waste your time sleeping, or doing nothing. Its college! Aside from it being very rewarding by educational standards, these will also be the best years of your life.

Great for these types of students

Students who are intent on growing up and learning from experience. Also I believe this is a school for students who wanna take a step outside the ordinary, who wish to make their own footsteps instead of following in other's.

As a freshmen, I am required to take many classes that I thought would not interest me. I thought my English class was going to be boring, but the instructor made the class worth it. We learned how to think for ourselves and view the world differently. I am in my second semester and have not had any professors that I dislike. The readings for the class are usually quite interesting as well.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is large and there are many people. Virginia Tech makes it so easy to get involved with many clubs, sports and greek life. I have found few that are right for me so far. I am still searching for an activity that I love and will continue particpating for years to come. As I said, I am only on my second semester. It takes time to experiment and become involved.

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition goes, I think it's worth the money. I have learned so much already. I am looking forward to the next three years.

Housing on the other hand, is a little more expensive than it should be, in my opinion. I live in Johnson Hall. It's a nice building, pretty new, but there are communal bathrooms, small bedrooms and no air conditioning.

The meal plan is a great deal for students living on campus. A meal plan comes with 50% off every meal. The food here is amazing.

    Tips for prospective students

Virginia Tech was my number one choice in high school. My advice to potential students is to be a well rounded high school student. Get involved in extracurriculars! The Virginia Tech administration loves to see a wide variety of activities on applications. If you have an average GPA and average test scores, don't get put down and decide not to apply. As long as you have been involved with your school/ community, you still have a good chance of getting accepted.

Great for these types of students

Students that have lived abroad have that edge and diversity that Virginia Tech looks for.
Students that enjoying being busy, with not only school but also social events, would appreciate Virginia Tech.

Here at Virginia Tech I have encountered wonderful mentors and professors who are willing to always assist you with any questions or concerns. They devote their time to answer questions after class or anytime they are available. As good professionals they have made my learning more retainable and understanding. Their enthusiasm of each subject make the classes enjoyable and very educational.

    Am enjoying being here

The people and atmosphere at Virginia Tech have made my stay much more comfortable and meaningful. The staff and students are very involved with giving back all they can to the community. There are so many clubs and activities to do here that you'll never get bored. You'll be sure to find something just for you and if you feel that there is still not a club for you, you have an opportunity to create one with two more members!

    Bang for the buck

The excellent quality of academic programs and housing as well as food services are worth every penny I pay to attend this extraordinary school.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a high quality education and trying to pursue a great career, Virginia Tech gives multiple opportunities to get started. Their website consists of mass amount of information that will help your searches for school easier and make the experience exceptionally great. The campus is extremely gorgeous and though the location is not near the city, it is very heart-warming and perfect.

Great for these types of students

This is an excellent school for anyone pursuing in engineering, business, or agriculture. It is also a wonderful experience for anyone interested in getting truly involved with the community and making a difference for those who are in need.

Most Theatre Arts majors, such as myself, are pretty much open to different ideas and experiences. That is why Virginia Tech is perfect for me. The professors here come from different backgrounds and thus are full of different ideas and teaching methods, and they are willing to share them with their students.

    Am enjoying being here

The thing that makes Virginia Tech stand out in comparison to other colleges is the spirit. It's impossible to go one day at Tech and not see one or more students or faculty members wearing maroon and orange. When I came for my tour of the college we got lost and a student helped us find the check-in building. There are a lot of nice people here, the teachers are great, and the football games are amazing!

    Bang for the buck

Don't get me wrong, tuition is pretty ridiculous, but other colleges' aren't much better. Plus, the spirit at Tech surpasses the spirit at all of the other colleges I've been to. Maybe I'm just saying this because I'm not paying the tuition, but to me, you can't put a price on quality education.

    Tips for prospective students

Blacksburg (A.K.A. Bleaksburg) gets extremely cold in the winter and can also have very heavy rains so don't forget to pack a heavy coat, rain gear (coat, umbrella, boots), gloves, and warm clothes and shoes. It takes the normal person no more than 15 minutes to walk across campus, but make sure you leave for your classes about 25 minutes before they start to give yourself some extra time.

Great for these types of students

Students who like the idea of a big college but who like the idea of getting personal attention from teachers. Students who are open to different ideas.

The teachers are always here to help. Tech also has several study groups and tutoring programs for students who need a little extra to grasp a concept.

Every day I am greeted by a smiling face. The students and faculty are all warm-hearted. Each person is connected by a common love for what they do and who they are.

    Definitely worth the money...

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as possible, make the grades, and stay focused. There are lots of activities you will want to do here, but none of that will be possible if you don't stay on top of your grades.

Great for these types of students

    Students with lots of spirit.
Those in love with scenic areas.

Tech has a wide range of classes and awesome teachers!

    Tips for prospective students

When you tour the campus or go for orientation the school and buildings all seem so big and confusing but once you get a map and walk around with friends and need to find food its super easy. Tech is such a great school for all sorts of people. There are sports clubs of every types, there are religious groups and churchs all over, and there are academic clubs for every major. The drill field is a great place to go and play games are watch movies. Just get out there explore the campus and you'll find plenty of people to become friends with. Make sure to get to know people in your classes and dorm and you'll have an awesome year!

Tech is a great school for everyone. There is a place for all races, all religions, all kinds of people. Everyone at Tech is kind, respectful, and friendly :)

I am a second year Chemistry Major here at Virginia Tech and while the classes are difficult they are not impossible. Almost all of the proffesors are also researchers here at Tech, so they definately know what they are talking about. While at times they may go past your level of knowledge they are always sure to fully explain and thoroughly teach the major concepts at hand. Furthermore, if for any reason you are having difficulty understanding something there are numerous resources available to you. The Professors have office hours but in almost every course there are specific tutors available. Based on your level of aid required you can either attend group tutoring sessions or obtain a private tutor. Basically the Univerisity has every possible form of help, it is simply up to you as a student to seek out the amount that you require. Furthermore, this does not simply go for the college of science classes. I have also taken classes in Psychology, Gender Studies, Horticulture, and Mathematics, and have never found the teachers excessively difficult but have always found help readily accessible. Virginia Tech simply has amazing academics.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being a Hokie! This school has it all, amazing academics, a beautiful campus set in a Valley in the Appalachian Mountains, a winning football team with adoring fans, and some of the best dining centers in the country. I like to think about Tech as the perfect combination. Hokies work hard but play just as hard. We are definitely highly regarded in the academic circles, particularly for our Architecture, Engineering, and Science, but our Football team was also the ACC Champion last year. So if you're looking for a well renowned school where you can also be sure to have fun on the weekends, Tech is the place to be. With numerous clubs and activities to participate in, both major and non major related, highly regarded academics, and an awesome football team, there really isn't anywhere else that can balance everything so perfectly. I love being a Hokie!

    Bang for the buck

I attend Virginia Tech out of state and incomparison to my In-State choices, Tech is not that much more expensive. Living on campus Tech is about $30,000 where for in NJ In-State on campus is about $24,000, so for an extra $6,000 a year I might as well go to a school I love. Not that $30,000 a year is cheap, but when you consider the numerous $50,000 schools you learn to appreciate the difference. In-State for Virginia Tech is basically a steal, it's about half of the Out-of-State tuition. For all the resources that are made available to us you definitely get your money's worth. The campus is kept in pristine condition, all of your labs have the most advanced technology available. Convenient and clean buses run just about anywhere you could consider going. The lecture halls are spacious and comfortable, sometimes too comfortable for those 8am's... There are numerous clubs available and if something does cost extra money there is almost always some discount for a being a student. Basically I love Virginia Tech and it's made even more appealing for its relatively inexpensive tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

It should be warned that Blacksburg weather is slightly bipolar. During the school year from August to May, we have about two months of warm weather, 2 months of in between when the weather can't decide between warm or cold, and then about 5 months of pretty cold. If you don't like the cold you may not like Tech. During the late spring and early fall semester the campus is beautiful, warm, and everything is bright green. However, try to remember this is the mountains. The campus is still beautiful but it will get cold here, so if you aren't used to the winter, or don't like the cold this might not be the school for you. New students, invest in a BIG Jacket and gloves and a hat you will need it strolling across the drill field.

Great for these types of students

If you're a student that knows how to manage fun and academics Tech is the place for you. While on Saturdays during the football season things can get a little crazy around Campus, everything settles back down by Sunday afternoon and people are fully back to work on Monday. Before attending Tech I didn't know how I would react to craziness about sports, but in all honestly the school spirit is infectious and is now one of my favorite things about this University. I love that the school encompasses everything, great academics but fun too. So if you're looking for that perfect balance between work and play, Virginia Tech is the place for you.

The professors are GREAT! They are always willing to help if you don't understand. You just have to make the first step. Most professors are experts in the subject that they teach so they can answer almost any questions. I don't have a lot of busy work, either. All the work I do is for a purpose, which is awesome.

    Am enjoying being here

Virginia Tech is a completely non-judgmental environment. There are days when I run out of the dorm in sweatpants and other days where I run out in a dress and it doesn't make a difference. People don't care about looks. Hokie Nation is such a strong community and you can't help but feel it the second you step on campus. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, but if you're in state, then it is DEFINITELY worth it to come to Virginia Tech. They offer so many majors, the best food in the country and great residence halls. You definitely get what you pay for.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! If you want to make the most out of your experience, you need to get involved. If you don't you'll end up sitting in your dorm the whole time. That being said, get involved in high school. Colleges love when you're involved, because that is a good indicator of what you can bring to the campus.

Great for these types of students

Our engineering and architecture programs are phenomenal. Our animal science and dairy sciences are good as well. The other majors are not bad by any means but they are not as well known as those four majors.

Virginia Tech offers such a wide range of classes that it would be difficult to not find a class and major that you love. Now that I have gotten settled into a major that is interesting for me and I have gotten used to the class size, I learn something new everyday. The classes are overwhelming at first but once you stick with it through that first semester freshman year you are golden!

    Am enjoying being here

One of my favorite things about Virginia Tech is the availability of student activities. There are a ton of clubs and if for some reason none of those sound good enough you can start your own! The size of the school may seem daunting to some people but freshman year is all about meeting people. The dorm environment invites conversation between you and your hall-mates and trust me, life long friendships will be born! Now that I am a second semester sophomore, I never walk to class without passing someone I know.

    Bang for the buck

Since it is a state school, Virginia Tech is moderately affordable. It is also a really large school which is great for networking companies. I have even been told that there are a lot of companies that will only higher VT grads. Consider the money an investment in your future, Virginia Tech can help you get a job!

    Tips for prospective students

The most important advice I can give to prospective students is do not let the size scare you. I had a lot of friends who turned Virginia Tech down because of how big it is but I promise it will not feel that big once you are here. If you get involved with extracurriculars and put yourself out there as a freshman in your dorm you will make so many friendships that Virginia Tech will go from feeling like 20,000 students to 200.

Great for these types of students

Virginia Tech is especially good for students who are self-motivated. Because of the class size the accountability that professors are able to give you is limited.

The professors are all experts in their fields and can easily explain complicated topics in an understandable fashion. They are all also more than willing to spend time outside of class going over the topic with you, even if you can't make their office hours.

    Am enjoying being here

Everyone is very friendly and easy to get along with. The campus routinely holds get togethers where its easy to meet new people. During my third day on campus I made three new friends at one of these events, thats how easy it is to meet people.

    Bang for the buck

The campus definitely goes out of its way to help you do well in college and after college. Whether its holding monthly seminars to help teach you good study habits or sending emails to let you know of every job fair at which companies are looking for your major VT ensures you have every opportunity available.

    Tips for prospective students

The first thing I suggest is meeting your professors: say hi to them after the first class, sit near the front and ask questions. You'd be surprised how much this helps later on, especially when you need recommendation letters. Other than that, be sure to form study groups, it makes studying both more bearable and more effective.

Great for these types of students

Well, lets see: the football fans get to enjoy one of the loudest stadiums in the country, the career focused get a campus which prides itself on finding great jobs for its students, and the academics get one of the best educational schools in the country. Yeah that about covers it.

For prospective engineering students, look no further than Virginia Tech. The school has one of the finest engineering programs in the country and as such all graduates leave with a slight advantage in their job hunt. It is a very rigorous program, but you learn quickly and efficiently. To start off, you enhance your math skills with basic calculus and linear algebra, study chemistry, and learn the basic of engineering and design in a workshop. These include studying the individual fields within the engineering discipline, working with LabVIEW programming, understanding the design process, and even building your first prototype in a team environment. It's a very hands-on process and the professors are eager to help their students succeed.

For those who are not interested in engineering, don't count of Virginia Tech just yet. It also has excellent architecture, science, and business majors, and many more. Whether you intend to study in the field of technology or liberal arts, Virginia Tech provides all the resources a student could possibly need to succeed.

    Am enjoying being here

There are well over 100 student programs on campus in Virginia Tech, so a student always has something to do with his/her free time. Whatever the hobby, whether that's sports, games, cultural experiences, etc., there's a group for that. If not, then a student can always make a new group with at least two other people. Student organizations are a great way to get connected on campus and forge lifelong relationships.

Virginia Tech has a strict anti-discrimination policy. The goal is for every man or woman of any ethnic or religious group to have an equal opportunity and the right to live on campus without fear of prejudice. These standards are strictly enforced.

Did I mention that Virginia Tech has been recently voted the number one dining halls in the nation? The food is great and you never have to go hungry.

    Bang for the buck

It may seem that a great school like Virginia Tech would have a huge pricetag, but that's simply not true when compared to other state colleges. Virginia Tech was my first choice when I was college hunting, but I expected that I would not be able to pay for it. To my surprise, other schools such as the University of Virginia and others were several thousand dollars more expensive. So not only does Virginia Tech provide an excellent education, but it does so at a fantastic value! It's really quite a deal.

    Tips for prospective students

Obviously I would recommend that you study hard and keep your high school GPA up. That certainly helps for admission. Virginia Tech recieves thousands of applications every semester, so you'll want to keep an edge. I also recommend a lot of community involvement and extra-curricular programs. If you have the opportunity to cultivate leadership skills, whether in a job or an organization, do it. It looks fantastic on an application.

As a fair warning, college life is nothing like high school life. They are not even in the same ballpark. For a lot of students entering Virginia Tech, they did not even have to study to succeed in college. The engineering class fo 2013 entered campus with an average GPA of 3.97, to give you an idea. But college has a tendancy to weed out the students that cannot adapt and take their education seriously. Expect to spend the majority of your day behind a desk with your nose buried in some book, working out derivatives or determining the quantum structure of an atom. If you don't think you can handle spending at least eight hours a day studying, then perhaps you should rethink pursuing college. It's a very trying experience, but the rewards are definitely worth it.

Studying for so long can leave you exhausted, so I strongly recommend breaking it up into pieces and taking short, fun breaks. Find some student program or event that catches your interest and check it out. If I hadn't found Campus Crusade to break up my Thursday nights, I probably would go mad. These events help your mind to relax and you're refreshed for the next stretch of studying.

Another tip: do not neglect your nutrition. I've seen it happen many times (and I was guilty of it myself). Students are finally free from their parents' control and decide they want to eat whatever they want. Pizza for breakfast, cake with every meal, burgers and fries galore. Virginia Tech has so many great dining halls, this is easy to achieve. It's fun for a little while, but eventually it starts to drain you. Even worse, poor nutrition affects your mental capabilities. If you eat lots of fats and sugars before a test, the blood in your body swarms around your stomach to process the food, leaving a slight shortage in the brain. This often affects your test results. Eat plenty of protein and vegetables and let the junk food be an occassional treat.

Great for these types of students

Virginia Tech is great for engineering students. No question about it. The school's reputation is strongly founded in that program. Any engineering student would do well to choose Virginia Tech as a prospective college.

Virginia Tech has several programs, but architecture to business to art. As an engineering student myself, I cannot speak with certainty about these majors, but if my own classes and professors are any sort of indicator, I would guess that Virginia Tech provides plenty of resources and opportunities for these students as well. Basically what I'm trying to say is that just because Virginia Tech is known as a technology school, don't count it out if you aren't interested in technology. It's an incredible school and I would strongly recommend at least attending an information session to see your options.

    In three sentences

Virginia Tech is a beautiful place full a good people and food. The community is very welcoming and engaging to students. There is a wide variety of courses and you will always find something to do that you like.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a wind breaker and a kite: it is windy most of the time. Engage in the Blacksburg community; it will enrich your college experience. Talk to the professors ; let them know you are more than a number and most actually like getting to know students.

    Academic Rigor

There are always challenging courses available that teach more than subect matter, they actually teach you to think.

    Dorm Life

There are a variety of types of dorms. The RA's are really good at instigating get togethers. The dorms are good quality with many currently being renovated.

    Food and Dining

Wonderful food, even in the cheaper dining halls. There are many choices from student suggested venues to commercial chains. A brand new dining hall is opening summer 2012 on the academic side of campus.

    What to do for fun

There are many options for fun. The Drillfield is a great place to hang out and get involved in pick up games of football and ultimate frisby. We have an amazing theater program, many walking paths, an adventuring program, and tons of student clubs and activities.

    Bang for the buck

You get a great education, a great location, a wonderful local community, and an amazing campus community. There is a large town less than ten minutes away and a city roughly forty five minutes away. There is both country side and mountains to explore, amazing campus and local cuisine, and a beautiful place to learn.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Drillfield is this wide field in the middle of campus separating the residential and academic sides of campus. It is about two football fields long and wide. There is always something happening on it whether the Tighty Whities practising, an ultimate frisby game, people fighting with swords, or a giant snowball fight. Two other cool places are the Hahn Horticultural Gardens and the Duck Pond.

Great for these types of students

Really anyone. Outdoorsy people, country folk, city folk, foreigners: there is a wide range of people ready to welcome and help you.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton to choose from: ballroom dancing, Students for Creative Anachronism, Habitat for Humanity, knitting, ultimate frisby, the Running Club, horseback riding, fencing, archery: you name it, we probably have it. And if we don't it is really easy to start a club. All you need is a faculty adviser and three student officers.

    Greek Life

I chose not to be a part of Greek life but there are always signs up about them and I see them doing everything from blood drives to Relay for Life to throwing parties. If you are interested, there is a place for you.

    Campus Safety

I know everyone hears about the shootings that happen here but that does not happen often at all. There are these blue light boxes every hundred yards or so all through out campus that you just need to push a button and police will arrive. The police are always patrolling in cars and on bikes. You recieve emails detailing the things that happen on campus. There are alerts via emails, calls, and texts about major stuff and they are always testing the system. All classrooms have clocks that scroll alerts as needed. There are self defense sessions offered by the police. Campus is well lit. I walk home past midnight often and nothing has ever happened to me. And if you don't want to walk home, the police and campus has teamed up to offer something called Safe Ride that takes you anywhere in Blacksburg from campus after dark. You are extremely safe at Tech

The learning environment at Virginia Tech is phenomenal. Each of my professors are experts in their respective fields and bring the latest research into the classroom. I feel like I learn the most up to date material and retain it better because it applies to the 21st century.

Virginia Tech is a gorgeous University with buildings constructed almost entirely out of Hokie Stone (a local material that is mined by Virginia Tech) not to mention its gorgeous location in the majestic Appalachian Mountains. There is always something to do at Virginia Tech. Concerts, Football Games, Plays, and Parties are events that as a Virginia Tech student you will enjoy. Also, as a freshman, you will love the food! Virginia Tech is number one in the country for its food. Lobster, London Broil, Trout, Chinese etc... you name it Virginia Tech has it. I love everything about Tech and you will too.

    Bang for the buck

For in state and out of state students, Virginia Tech is one of the most reasonable schools in the country. With over 500 scholarships and grants, Virginia Tech strives to accommodate all of its students with this tuition assistance. Also, the meal plan at Virginia Tech gives its students 50% off the number one rated college food in the country. Even off campus students opt to have a dinning plans.

    Tips for prospective students

In college, the effort you put into academics results in the grade you deserve. I have found that reviewing my notes 5-10 minutes a day has helped me prepare for my exams. My biggest piece of advice for incoming freshman is to attend the lectures, meet your professor, and make friends in each of your classes. Attending class is important because the professor clarifies earlier textbook readings, and sometimes takes attendance and gives extra credit for those that are present. Introducing yourself to your professor is also beneficial because it puts a name to a face for your professor. Additionally, making friends in each class is valuable, because, if you become ill, your friends can take notes for you. Lastly, attend the football games because they are a wonderful opportunity to make friends and have a great time.

Great for these types of students

Virginia Tech is great for those students that want to expand their academic horizons, enjoy the majestic Appalachian mountains, and indulge in the best food in the country. The student body is very diverse economically and culturally so finding friends with similar interests is not a problem but a wonderful process.

The great thing about Tech is that the atmosphere really makes you want to push yourself. College itself is a lot different from high school. However, attending college at Tech is a lot different from other colleges. Many people here wouldn't find it odd to be staying in on a Friday night to study for a test. It may not sound like fun, but everyone around you is doing the same thing, and you feel good about it.

Being a Hokie is something that can only be explained through experience. It's more than a theme or a mascot. I am a Hokie, we are Hokies. Tech has been the source of best times of my life so far, and I'm only a sophomore.

    Bang for the buck

For a public school, the education, atmosphere, football games, and lifelong friends, this is definitely the best bang for the buck.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit a lot of schools and make sure you could see yourself at the school. Also, be positive. Negativity will follow with more negativity. Even if you do come here, not sure you'll fit in, I challenge you to give it a try, because you'll probably find something you love.

Active, involved, spirited, die - hard, passionate, studious.

    Will learn a lot

I was quick to find that the professors are approachable and caring, desiring the success for each and every student on campus. They are well-learned, able to lead students to the path of success in the easiest, stress-free manner possible. The academics are challenging yet attainable. The possibilities are endless, and one can truly flourish here if determined. I am determined to lead others as I am led by the professors and other students to do the very best that I can do and be best set up to invent the future.
    GO HOKIES!

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is absolutely beautiful, and the atmosphere is one of top respect. Everyone treats others very well, there is no sense of cliques or prejudices of any types, only tolerance and acceptance. Everyone is family when joined by the Hokies.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive. Not doubt about that. So why not pay the TON of money for an AMAZING school? VA Tech is a huge bang for the buck, providing endless opportunities and options, each leading to some form of success if allowed. VA Tech is beyond worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet the professors beforehand and show immediate interest in their field of study, since you WILL be under them for classes. Make the most of it and set yourself up well.

This school has provided a great expanse of knowledge for me. The core classes that everyone has to take besides your major courses include numerous fun courses that enlighten you to make you a well-rounded person. For example, I took classes from Greek/Roman Mythology to Appalachian Folk Culture. These classes turned out to be my favorite throughout my college career! The professors are all well educated and usually provide great teaching skills to be able to give students the best learning experience possible.

    Tips for prospective students

Go into college full force. Don't slack off your first year because you will just be playing catch up the rest of your career! Also, get ahead in your classes, this will leave your senior year open for fun extra classes!

I am attending the Virginia Polytechnic Institute for a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although, Virginia Tech is not solely an Engineering college; there is a College of Architecture, a College of Business, plus other many other majors that aren't all tech oriented.

The best aspect academics is by far the professors. They are extremely knowledge in their subjects mainly due to the fact that they are professionals in the correlating field or have doctorates in that area. The classes themselves are also amazing. Not only are the professors great, but like I've already stated, there is a wide variety of courses. You don't always have to select classes that focus on your major; you can pursue classes that could help you find a minor or just take classes you like. Whatever you would love to learn, you can find it at Tech.

    Am enjoying being here

If I could go to any school I wanted, after going to Virginia Polytechnic Institute, I don't think I could go anywhere else. There is a strong sense of community at this school. What makes the students here great is the mutual sense of respect for each other and other schools that stems from are athletics department's good sportsmanship, which we call Hokie Respect. If you don't already know, Hokie is a term that refers to a Virginia Tech student. This naming helps unify us further because no matter who you are, at Tech, we're all Hokies.
Again, any interest you may have you can pursue it at Tech. At Virginia Tech, there are literally hundreds of clubs and activities. Many are major oriented with multiple tech clubs but with other non-major related clubs such as those involving intramural sports and outdoor or wilderness activities.
Outside of academics, my favorite thing about Tech is the food. This is by far better than the cafeteria food you got in high school. In fact, when given the option to go off campus to eat or stay on, I still choose to eat on campus. There is a wide variety of dining options to choose from such as a buffet, take out, major fast food restaurants located on campus, and even a sports grill. There is always the Freshman's fear of weight gain but there are programs at Tech that help manage dieting habits and there also vegetarian options at all dining areas.

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Polytechnic Institute is a very prestigious school which causes its tuition to be slightly higher than other colleges. These funds are used to ensure you a top of the line education at Virginia Tech throughout your attendance. If, in fact, you do run into financial difficulties you can find very helpful assistance at the Bursar and Financial Aid offices whose main goal is to fit the costs to your budget.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important tip I can give to an aspiring college student is to make sure you are financially prepared. Scholarships are fantastic but make sure you are knowledgeable about student loans and have a detailed budget plan for your stay at school. Your budget will not only be focused on tuition but also other aspect such as extracurricular activities or plans for off campus living. Also, keep in mind that college is a completely different world from high school. You are totally on your own and with that your responsibilities grow substantially. The temptation to stray from your studies is great without the supervision you were used to at home. So with this in mind my two tips are: stay FOCUSED and stay ORGANIZED!

    Technically oriented

I'm a double major in Animal Science and Interdisciplinary Studies. I get to learn about and explore every aspect you can imagine of the Animal and Poultry Science field. The faculty is passionate about what they do, and if you want to do a project, someone will support you. Meanwhile, Interdisciplinary Studies is what I'm taking so I can eventually become a teacher. This department is unique, because it allows you to customize your degree based on your interests. You choose from a list of minors to make up your major, giving you a way to learn more about the things that interest you.

    Am enjoying being here

The professors are excellent, as is the rest of the staff. Meals are good, and it's such a big campus that you're bound to find someone with similar interests.

    Bang for the buck

It's a good deal for the education you get, but I recommend looking into financial aid and scholarships. Pre-paid tuition is also an excellent idea if you're an instate student.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let yourself get lost in the crowd. Make sure your professor know who you are. Speak up in class. Don't be afraid to do something a tiny bit crazy now and then.

Great for these types of students

Students that have a passion for learning, aren't afraid of crowds, and are willing to accept the views of others.

The campus seems big however, it is very easy to navigate and if you get lost all you have to do is ask someone and they are more than willing to help you out. The sports teams are amazing and help create that sense of family and community since you're all in it for the same reason. You really become family with your roommates and hall-mates and you miss them when you go home for vacations. This school has amazing scenery and it's easy to get caught up in how beautiful it is.

Virginia Tech's campus is the most beautiful and friendly I have ever seen, with a welcoming environment.
Virginia Tech's staff is incredible, and all willing to help out as well as are very encouraging in classes across every subject I've taken.
They have the best food of anywhere!

    Tips for prospective students

Read up on your teachers before choosing classes. It's not that any are better than others, but depending on what works will for you, you'll want to get second opinions on different teachers' styles and policies.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are challenging (some more than others) but they're all very manageable. My teachers push me to reach my potential and I'm always engaged in learning something new and coming up with ways to apply my knowledge.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is pretty great. You make a lot of friends and gain a real sense of community. It really depends on the dorm and your personality, though, but I like it. There's always the option to keep your door open and be social, or close it and keep to yourself or do work, and of course there's always the lounge which can make for a nice change of scenery, as if you were in a real home!

    Food and Dining

    Excellent food. Very excellent.

    What to do for fun

The mall is close, and there's the Lyric theater. There's always some concert or another going on which are always fun, and Tech is always coming up with new ideas for fun social events for students. Especially if you get involved with a club or organization, you'll find yourself always having something to do for fun should you choose to accept.

    Bang for the buck

For such a fine university, the cost is quire reasonable when comparing to other schools. I believe Virginia Tech has one of the lowest in the state, and perhaps the lowest when looking at the correlation between cost and value.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Football games: Enter Sandman; Let's Go! Hokies!; The Spring Game; April 16th Memorial Service; Relay for Life!; Squire's Student Center; The Drillfield.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student, really. It's easy to be outgoing and get involved, but if you're quiet it's not hard to find alone time and quiet places and spaces. The campus isn't as big as it seems especially once you find your way around. Tech definitely lives up to all the hype, but if that's not your thing it doesn't have to become a part of your life even if you attend the school.

    Clubs and Activities

There are hundreds upon hundreds of ways to get involved with clubs and activities. Like I said before, it's really hard to be bored here. Even if you only get involved with one extracurricular, you'll still have tons to do, tons to look forward to, and tons of friends!

    Greek Life

I'm not a part of it, but from what my friends have expressed I understand that it's a great organization and many different ways to become involved regardless of personality or interest.

    Campus Safety

I frequently walk alone at night and I've never been scared for my safety. Many police are stationed at certain times of the night and it's very comforting for me when I know I have to walk back to my dorm at midnight or later.

The professors at Tech have a lot of experience in their fields and are generally excellent at making the information relevent to most of the students in their classes, even when teaching very large classes.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is enormous, which provides plenty to do -- if you ever find yourself bored at Tech, there is something seriously wrong. The people are extremely friendly and you can strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone, anywhere (even in an elevator or on the bus!). There are so many classes available to students of all majors that you can pretty much always take something you WANT to take for every class you HAVE to take.

    Bang for the buck

Because Tech is such a large campus with such an enormous student body, don't expect to get very much one-on-one time with your professors -- you're more likely to be a number than a name. By the same token, the size of the campus means that there's something for everyone, especially when it comes to extracurriculars, and there are certainly more than enough resources for academic help as well. It is what you make of it -- if you put a lot in, you'll get a lot out, but if you don't bother taking advantage of the resources here, then you may as well not have come.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely take advantage of the resources and activities available on campus. If you aren't going to get out and DO something (join a class, go to a group study, SOMETHING), then there's no point in going -- you could get a similar education at another college (unless you're there for Agriculture, Architecture, or Engineering, in which case Tech is unparalleled). Also, learn how to deal with large class sizes. Your first two years (at least) will be primarily made up of lectures with over 100 students in each class.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, friendly, open students who enjoy socializing and trying new things; students with interests in Agriculture, Architecture, or Engineering

I'm an Architecture student, and the rumors are true- you will spend your life in studio here. But you learn so much from the faculty and it's an incredible creative environment that you don't mind. It doesn't get too hectic until second year though, and despite that you can still take electives and join clubs and feel like a major contributor to the student body.

You make so many good friends here and there is tons to do on campus. however, when it gets to be November, December, it's colder than the ice age and everyone starts to get cabin fever.

Great value for such a school. The food is good, housing is fine, and there are so many classes to take advantage of.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your grades up if you want to get in, especially for a program like Engineering or Architecture. And enjoy yourself when you get here, but don't go crazy. Be smart and you'll love it here.

It's only been half a semester and the whole college transition has finally sank in. Between high school and college, the whole learning experience is different. Some of the basic classes cover things learned in high school. Others delve into some topics that you may have never heard of. The teachers know what they are talking about and they teach it in a reasonable fashion. They also have office hours for the people that want to talk to them one-to-one.

The only issue so far is that some of the topics have overlapped, and it seems like review for those topics in class. I have not taken any higher level classes yet so that is bound to change.

    Am enjoying being here

I am absolutely loving it. From the first time I stepped on campus way back in November of last year to orientation and moving day, there hasn't been a moment where I didn't love the experience. There are plenty of clubs and extracurricular activities to join, and they have a day in September where all of those organizations come out in one area to find new members. The whole big campus issue is really a non-issue. You quickly adjust to how far all of the buildings are on campus and adjust accordingly.

It has been a blast to be going here, even though it is a whole 8 hours away from my home.

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Tech is definitely on the less expensive size, especially for its size. With all of the different features that it offers, Virginia Tech definitely sets itself apart from the competition. There are plenty of areas to go throw a frisbee around. The food here is ranked #1 in the country by the Princeton Review. The classes teach you something and the teachers aren't incompetent. Even the internet is in the 99th percentile of internet speed.

Virginia Tech definitely utilizes the newest technology to make it such a top notch university.

    Tips for prospective students

Make friends and get active early. While this applies to all colleges, it is still just as important here. Don't just mindlessly go to class, get your food, and do homework. Throw yourself out there and be a part of the Hokie community.

Great for these types of students

They have a lot of majors to chose from. The School of Architecture and Design is tied for the top spot, competing with the likes of Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Most of their engineering programs are ranked in the top 10 in the country. Those are the most distinguished, but there are also the Colleges of Business, Agriculture, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine, to say the least. Even if you aren't sure, there is always the University Studies, where you can take the general university requirements for graduation while finding your true calling.

While some of the classes do not seem to have much purpose for what I plan to do at college, I think you are going to find that at whatever school you attend. There are challenges in every course, though, and the freshmen professors (at least for engineering) really want to do everything to help make sure people succeed in their classes.

    Am enjoying being here

I have found a great community of students that help make Virginia Tech a great social atmosphere. There's a lot of different things to do on campus as well as not too far of a bus ride/drive to do things off of campus.

If you look for scholarship opportunities or ways to cut on your expenses, you can definitely find them at Virginia Tech.

As an engineering major, I HAVE to learn a lot. But I love every second of it. If you are interested in a school that honestly will push you to excel in your field then Virginia Tech is the school for you. Even students who had completed the class before were eager to help other students and either tutor or offer helpful advice.

Virginia Tech is my new home. I loved staying on campus my first year and I got to meet so many amazing people. There were so many things to get involved in that I never had time to get bored. Between sports and groups, friends, and FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL games, my friends and I always found something to do. Besides, the food on campus is awesome!

My federal aid awards aren't the greatest, so I have to take out another loans. But for the education that I am receiving, I feel as though it is worth it. When I graduate, my degree as a Chemical Engineer will be respected because I earned it at such a prestigious engineering school.

    Tips for prospective students

Some general college advice: If you want to have a great time at college, make sure you meet people. Chances are you will find a couple that are going to be life-long friends. And get involved! Find something you think you'll like and try it out! Why not take a few chances with something new? For advice at Tech: Don't get overwhelmed by the size of the campus or the number or people. VT has a way of getting smaller and becoming a little community with all of your friends around you. Whatever you do, don't spend your nights in your room watching TV! There is going to be something more worthwhile for you to do out there.

I lived in Newman Hall as part of The World program. I met so many students from foreign countries. It was amazing! Virginia Tech is such a great place because it has room for all sorts of people. Religion, culture, and ethnicity aren't labels and people are seen for the person they are.

Not only Virginia Tech, but also Blacksburg is an awesome environment for everyone between the Hokie Spirit during home games to just walking around seeing everyone in their Virginia Tech colors. The area provides SO much to do between hiking and going to the river, studying, sports, relaxing, volunteering and working. Name it and you most likely can do it at Tech. I have yet to have a night where I did not enjoy myself and wished that I was somewhere else. Everyone you meet is friendly and willing to help :)

VT is on the pricey side but it is a research school and it totally pays off. The professors are always up to date on what is most recent in the field and new discoveries are constantly created here at Tech. As a matter of fact the idea and technology needed for cloning Dolly the Sheep was created at Tech! With the number one food in the nation and dorms always being renovated to be better I never feel like my money is being wasted.

    Tips for prospective students

Grades and extracurricular's are both very important to be accepted to Virginia Tech. Once you get here don't be shy, introduce yourself to people and get out there and join clubs and stay involved! It's easy to get lost on a huge campus like VT but with the friends to back you up you will never be let down.

Virginia Tech, is a beautiful campus located in the middle of no where. The students of Tech are great people and make it a very enjoyable place. Your 4 years here will fly by!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are an engineering student, make sure you take all of your classes seriously. Many students become friends with the business students and start mimicking their work ethic, which will not work with engineering coarse load.

    Academic Rigor

The School of Engineering at Tech is a very prestigious one, and they pride themselves on that. As an engineering student you always have work to be done. Although some of it may be busy work, most of it is very challenging.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at this school vary. There are plenty of suite-style dorms and there are plenty of older dorms with not very great accommodations.

    Food and Dining

Tech has recently been ranked number 1 and is always ranked among the top 3 schools in the nation every year for their on campus dining. West End dining hall is one of the many food courts, and definitely the best one I've been too on any school campus. There you can get steaks, lobster, burgers, salads, wraps and anything else you can think of.

    What to do for fun

Tech has great intramural sports. At any point of the year at least 30 of your friends will be asking you to play on one of their teams. Their McComas Hall is a great gym as well. On the weekends there are always parties going on. In addition to that, it's always a great time going to see Hokie Football games.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many sports clubs teams at Tech.

    Campus Safety

Although there have been two isolated events on the Tech campus, for the most part the campus is a very safe one. The school makes up the town of Blacksburg so you only encounter students when walking around.

I absolutely love everything about Virginia Tech! The classes are challenging but rewarding and all of the students there are so warm and welcoming. I just finished my first year at Virginia Tech and I cant wait to go back to my home away from home.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should definitely try to get involved in school activities as soon possible. Joining clubs and organizations is one of the easiest ways to meet new people. Usually at the beginning of the school year Virginia Tech holds an event where most of the school organizations set up small booths on campus so that students can find new clubs to get involved in.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes are challenging, but that's to be expected in college. Most of the teachers are very knowledgeable and even if a class might seem extremely difficult, I can guarantee that students will gain a new appreciation for the subject matter.

    Dorm Life

The quality of the dorm rooms vary, but it should not be too much of a deciding factor in choosing a college. The dorm that I lived in freshman year was definitely not one of the nicest dorms on campus, but I didn't care because I met so many great people in that dorm. I'm living on campus again next year and even though I don't know which dorm i will be living in, I am extremely excited to get to meet new neighbors and make new friends. Dorm life can be as good or as bad as you want it to be.

    Food and Dining

    Campus Safety

Ever since the incident on April 16th, the school has done everything in its power to ensure that the students are safe. The only way that students are able to access their dorm is by using their ID card to unlock the door. Each students ID card is only able to unlock the doors to their dorm. Also, any time a crime is committed, the school sends out an alert within the hour notifying every student about all of the details of the incident. Despite the history of this school, I have always felt extremely safe and secure at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech is a college with a place for everyone, from liberal arts majors to engineering. Your college experience here is as rigorous or relaxed as you make it, and with so many people on campus and within the town of Blacksburg, you can't fail to find groups and friends with the same interests as you. It is fun and tough, but a good balance of both!

    Tips for prospective students

Check websites like koofers.com and talk to friends about teachers, because it can make a huge difference in how you approach and learn in a class. Keep on top of your work so you have time to hit the gym (great intramural sports and group fitness classes) during the week and hang out with friends on the weekend.

    Academic Rigor

It can be very hard depending on your major and the number of credit hours you are taking at any given time, but in general most students find it between a 3 and a 5 on a scale of 1 - 5.

    Dorm Life

If you choose to go into theme housing, you are guaranteed other students with the same interests and classes as you and it can make starting off the year easier and more fun. Unless you apply to the Residential Leadership Community you will likely live in a traditional style dorm (probably without air conditioning), though if you live on campus as an upperclassmen, you have a better chance of living in suite-style housing with A.C. and a common room for each suite. Overall, the housing is good but not great, but the access to the gym and dining halls is nice, plus you always have people around you to go with.

    Food and Dining

Virginia Tech is #2 in the nation and #1 for public universities for dining.

    What to do for fun

Join a club or intramural sports team, a fraternity/sorority, go to parties with friends on the weekend, take a run/hike or bike mountain trails and go camping, check out books and movies from the library. Whatever is your thing, there are bound to be some among the 30,000 students who share an interest. We even have a quidditch team!

There are many things to do from watching Tech football to just walking around the New River Valley Mall you won't be bored. If you want to do the Corps of Cadets it is a very rich experience and very useful if you want to go into the military.

Can be expensive to some, but just right for others. Scholarships can help though.

    Tips for prospective students

Virginia Tech has some great academics. The Curriculum forces you to take a little bit of everything so you find yourself becoming a well-rounded student. Depending on your major professors can be hit or miss, but that's to be expected anywhere. All in all, Virginia Tech is a great school to help start the rest of your life.

    Am enjoying being here

There are lots of clubs at Tech that you can get involved with. The sports are top-notch and football season brings the whole campus together (or can tear us all apart). The campus is absolutely beautiful and the food is great. The decision for me to go to Virginia Tech was made as soon as I set foot on the campus for the first time.

    Bang for the buck

Tech is pretty expensive. For the in-state student it's not too bad, but for those who are out of state it can be a difficult hurdle. It all depends on what you plan on majoring in if it will be worth the money to you. Architecture and Engineering fields for out of state students are worth it, as are other top fields at Tech, but some less specialized fields may be better to stay in-state and save your money.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard for the SAT's. Every grade is important when it comes to your high school transcript. Don't be lazy, challenge yourself. The admissions office doesn't want to see great grades in easy classes, but good grades in challenging ones. Make sure you visit the campus before deciding if it's absolutely what you want. If you're not a party-person, don't think that just because it's a big state university that that's all people do. You'll find a place to fit in.

Great for these types of students

All types of students can fit in at Virginia Tech. With 30,000 students you will be hard pressed to not find some friends.

I am an Architecture student at Virginia Tech and I'm learning about the design process in a way I've never looked at it before. It teaches you yeah it's nice that way but what if I turn it. And my other classes are so insightful.

The campus is so beautiful. The Hokie Stone that is used is so different from any other college out there. Walking across the drillfield everyday to get to class and seeing Burruss Hall just makes me realize how great this place is.

    Bang for the buck

It's a tad expensive but what college isn't? You get great programs, teachers, sports teams and events, and athletic buildings. The bus system is free for being a student. The dining halls are so cheap but they never skimp on the quality of the food. There is so much that you get for being a student.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply as early as you can and don't get discouraged if you don't get in the first time or if you don't get in to your selected major. It will all work out. You're going to attend a great school with a great tradition.

Great for these types of students

It is great for any kind of student. It's big enough school to be detached from everyone but it is so close-knit that the people won't let you. They are so friendly so join clubs and groups and don't be afraid of meeting mean people because I don't know if there is any.

Virginia Tech is a wonderful educational school, not only through the quality of the equipment and classrooms, but also through the passion of the educators there. Every school has professors who are unorthodox, for lack of a better word, yet Virginia Tech has a large number of wonderful professors, teaching assistants, and administrators who truely care about the students. My organic chemistry professor used to help me over an hour after his office hours had ended because he wanted to make sure that I understood the concepts. These kinds of people make the best educators.

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many qualities that make Virginia Tech provide an enjoyable college experience. The wonderful mountain scenery combined with marble grey Hokie Stone and auburn leaves in the fall will leave you mesmerized. There are so many activities to become involved in that you won't be able to choose which ones you like more. The dining halls on campus are extraordinary, of course, and they will entice you out of you dorm room, even on a blustery winter morning. Saturday football games are a fantastic way to spend a gorgeous afternoon with friends, food, and family. All-in-all, I would rate the campus experience an A+.

    Bang for the buck

You will be hard-pressed to find a school with as good value as Virginia Tech. There are so many prestigious programs at the school, including architecture, engineering, science, and more. It is a public school, so tuition is not as much as some private schools. In addition, Blacksburg has some of the lowest prices I've seen on groceries! No college is inexpensive. But Virginia Tech is a great investment into your future.

    Tips for prospective students

I know that when I was a freshman at Virginia Tech, I wish someone would have convinced me to break out of my shell and branch out. My activities were very limited and I was intimidated by the large community. However, being active really does make the campus seem smaller, and it is a great way to socialize, make friends, and even build your resume.

Great for these types of students

Virginia Tech is a great school for all kinds of students because the student population is so large and well-rounded. You really can do almost anything you want. Anyone who has a good attitude and is ready to put in some effort really can go anywhere.

At Virginia Tech, you can always be assured that your professors are going to be experts and have personal experience in the fields that they are teaching. Because it is a research-based university, professors are always doing their own research within their fields and are always up to date on the latest advancements. I have yet to meet a professor who was not, in my opinion, excellent in conveying the knowledge that they have gained.

    Am enjoying being here

I was worried about living on campus because I was going to have a random roommate, but my roommate and hallmates have become my best friends on campus! One great thing about Tech is that there are so many people, you never have to worry about finding people that are interested in the same things as you are. Your new best friend could be living right next door!

    Bang for the buck

Tech is absolutely a great investment for Virginia residents: for a four-year university, the in-state tuition is fairly affordable and worth every penny. However, from what I've heard from some of my out-of-state friends, the price is quite a bit higher. If you're looking for a quality education, though, I'd say that it is absolutely worth the extra cost.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for incoming students is to utilize every bit of the Virginia Tech website! With so many students on campus, it can sometimes take a while to hear back from your advisor about class scheduling, etc (especially if you are in a bigger major). However, I have been able to answer a large majority of my own questions just by looking on the Tech homepage or the specific pages for each department. There are a lot of resources on the website that students just aren't aware of, so before sending frantic emails to your advisor when you have a last minute question, take a look at the homepage!

As an engineering major, the course load is always challenging and at times can be somewhat ridiculous. But as long as you put in the effort, you will learn more than you ever thought possible with Tech's vast amount of highly experienced professors in many fields of study. With options from sustainability to nanotechnology you will learn all about how these not only work but can be used together to invent the future. Best of all, that's just in the first semester. There is so much you learn not just from professors but from other students as well that makes the college experience so much more interesting.

    Am enjoying being here

On campus can be a lot of fun, off campus can be a whole lot of fun. One of the best things about Tech is that there is always something to do for everyone. The party scene is amazing and can be a great time as long as you know how to handle yourself out there, but even on campus you can still enjoy yourself. Midnight volleyball at one of the many courts, late night movie nights until 3am and even just lounging on the drillfield are just some of the on campus events that offer a great time with the new friends you meet at school.

    Bang for the buck

For out of state students such as myself, this can be a pretty costly school to go to. However, if one thing is sure, it is definitely worth every penny. Meeting students from every part of the world is just one advantage that makes this school so unique. Another major advantage is that many companies come to Tech looking for workers so on top of the excellent degree, especially in engineering, you will also almost certainly be lined up with a job before you even graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're coming here, you've made a great choice already so just remember a few key things before moving in. First of all, make sure you go for the upgraded bigger meal plan. The food here is so good that you can't help but run out with the smaller plan so the bigger one is definitely recommended. Secondly, when you get there make sure you go to as many events as you can fit into your schedule. This includes football games, basketball games, housing fairs and tons of free cookouts throughout the year. At almost every event there is sure to be free food and tons of other free stuff so it is definitely worth it. Also be sure to introduce yourself to as many people as possible, you can never have too many friends at college.

Great for these types of students

This school is definitely best for engineering students, students who like the mountains and those who like to get involved in a lot of activities. The school is known for its outstanding engineering program and it can easily be seen as almost 40% of my freshman class were engineers. Tech is surrounded by the Blue Ridge mountains which are an amazing sight to see even though it does make the weather a bit crazy sometimes. Students who love to get involved will have no problem fitting in here as there are literally hundreds of different clubs and activities to take part in, everything from Model UN to innertube water polo can be found here.

I have had many incredible professors who have opened up incredible opportunities such as studying abroad or working on undergraduate research. The teachers are always willing to help you when you need it and are willing to share their experiences with you. The opportunities to learn are not just in the classroom but also in the learning communities on campus and in the organizations.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being at Tech. The football games are incredible, being surrounded by thousands of students screaming and jumping to enter sand-man is a unique experience everyone should have. The people are very nice, the parties are good and there is always something to do. If it is nice out everyone will be on the drill field playing sports or laying out talking. Or people will go over to the river and go rafting. It is really a community atmosphere.

    Bang for the buck

Tech is one of the cheaper schools in the state and has a comparable price to most. However, the opportunities to participate in undergraduate research is much more prevalent and pushed at Tech compared to other Virginia schools.

    Tips for prospective students

Virginia Tech is a wonderful school. The professors are amazing and always willing to help. As a freshman coming from a small town I was nervous when I heard that many of the freshman classes had a head count of around 600 but the first day of classes changed that. I quickly learned that one could break the general idea of becoming a number and that I could remain a face. Virginia Tech has state of the art resources that aids the students to Invent the Future. I have learned so much here at Virginia Tech and know that I will continue to learn for the remainder of my time here.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here at Virginia Tech. As a freshman, one is required to live on campus in the dorm in order to ease the transfer process. This has been an amazing experience as I have made so many new friends. There are so many clubs and activities one can join in order to make the college experience that much better.

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Tech definitely provides you with bang for the buck. As far as a college education goes, Virginia Tech is offered for a relatively cheap price. Also, there are many amenities included in the price including public transportation, state of the art athletic facilities, and many student tickets for athletic events.

    Tips for prospective students

I would tell prospective students to give Virginia Tech a chance. It may seem overwhelming at first, the transition from high school to college, but it will definitely be worth it in the end. Do not worry if you begin to feel as if things are getting challenging because they will all play out in the end. Also, make use of all of the wonderful resources provided to you.

I came into college having no idea what I wanted to study and what I wanted out of a higher education. But being here, I've had some of the most inspirational professors who have stimulated my desire to study out psychology. In biology, I've learned so much more about life and there is such a wide range of class here; next semester, I'll be taking classes like Greek and Roman Mythology, Music Appreciation, and Human Development! There is so much offered here.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the atmosphere here! Everyone is so friendly and happy, and it feels like such a tight and united community of students unlike other places. We're a huge football school, and during football season, EVERYONE gets into the spirit! I never liked those type of things in high school, but I absolutely love all the sporting events here and hanging out on the vast drillfield where people play sports, lounge, and (lately) have snowball fights!

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Tech's tuition is definitely reasonable; heck for all that it offers, it's truly amazing. There is so much available to students other than hundreds of different classes; there is about 700+ clubs, so many intramural sports, two very awesome gyms, and so many other student programs and events that keep the community so awesome.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips would to be ALWAYS STUDY. Be prepared to study between classes; sometimes I feel like there's not enough time, and so much to do! Find a good bunch of friends around your dorm and in your classes (in case you miss) and definitely try one or two clubs/organizations because college isn't JUST about school; you have to have some fun too!

Although I am several years ahead of the math classes I am taking in college, the other courses are very challenging and educational. Even in lectures, the professors try to help students individually and get them adjusted to college studying, schedules, freedoms, responsibilities, etc.

Lectures, recitations, and labs are not the only places to learn. Student clubs, organizations, and unions also provide many opportunities to learn about different interests, cultures, and opinions. The resident advisor will also be a valuable source of information as one adjusts to college life for the first time.

    Am enjoying being here

Life in college is very different from life in high school. College gives its students more freedoms than high school, and students can get a greater sense of independence in college than at home. In return, students must also accept more responsibilities as adults. Students are responsible for going to classes and completing homework, students are responsible for maintaining their well-being, students are responsible for managing their own time, and students are responsible for seeking help as needed, amongst innumerable other responsibilities.

Students have to be careful taking on all these responsibilities, but if they do so successfully, they can enjoy high academic success, excellent extracurricular involvement, and a positive social interaction with other students. Achieving all three is very rewarding.

    Bang for the buck

Virginia Tech is a good choice for in-state students such as myself, although it always helps to have scholarships to ease the costs.

    Tips for prospective students

Take challenging courses, such as Advanced Placement classes and magnet classes. The more challenging the class material and workload, the easier the academic transition to college will be.

Visit the campus to get a good feel for Virginia Tech's buildings and services, and even a bit of Hokie spirit.

Apply for Virginia Tech scholarships if any are available to incoming freshman, and complete scholarships from other trustworthy sources. Scholarships will help to ease the cost of college, regardless of whether or not you go to Virginia Tech.

Great for these types of students

Dedicated students who will accept challenges and never quit in the middle of anything, open-minded students who can become a part of a multicultural community, honest students who can be trusted, and far-sighted students who have a general goal to reach for will do fairly well at Virginia Tech.

Even though the town is small, there is always something happening on campus that will keep you busy while here. Tips for prospective students

Pick the school that suits you best. If you are looking for that homely, close together feeling, then this is the place for you. This campus may seem large at first, but it is just like you thinking high school was big when you got there. Once you learn where your classes are and have walked a few times around, the campus will not seem big at all. Apply for as many scholarships as possible because it will help down the road for you and your parents. Lastly, study a lot stay on top of assignments and dates in order to make good grades and be a successful student in college.
