Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students Its small enough that you'll recognize or know a lot of people, but big enough that everyone is not in your business. The smaller class sizes are a huge advantage because you are able to get more time with the professor when you need help.
Great for these types of students If you like the mountains or the outdoors you will like Western. Base Camp Cullowhee is always organizing awesome outdoor activites.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The class size average is about 30 students which is good for student-professor relationships. You are able to get to know your professor in a setting not much different from high school. Professors strive to make time for your questions and want to see you succeed.
Am enjoying being here I love being in the mountains and Western is located in the perfect setting. Located in a valley, we get perfect weather most of the year. We have a small campus so it is easy to find your way around and you won't feel completely overwhelmed on your first day.
Bang for the buck My favorite part of tuition cost is the book rental policy. For $107, you get ALL the books you need for a semester. And you can return them at the end, so you don't have books you don't need sitting around. If you want, you can pay a discounted price to keep a book you want. This is one of Western's most exciting offers.
Tips for prospective students Come visit us! It isn't the same to just read a review, gain experience! Walk around campus with a tour guide that can tell you anything you want to know and some fun facts that you'll always remember.
Great for these types of students outdoor people, education majors, people interested in marching band (number 1 in the nation! :))

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are small enough that the teachers give you the attention you need and make themselves available for you if you need extra help.
Western also has great departments for you to choose from. Western has a special department for Entrepreneurship, which I am in. The classes there will help me one day have and run my own bookstore.Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful in its setting in the mountains. The school holds
many activities for you to participate in with your friends. Everyone is friendly and I have made many friends. There are many clubs and organizations for any type of interest.Bang for the buck The cost to attend is reasonable and the quality of the school is amazing for the low costs. The convenience of food is good and the quality. Western also provides many services to help you academically, advisors are there to help step by step. They have disability services and Student Support Services.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you attend class everyday.
Have a personal relationship with your advisor - they are there
to help you.
Use the library, they have great resources for you and the people who work there can help you.
Use the writing center, they will help you with your papers.Great for these types of students Mountain lovers should attend here. Students who want a great education for low costs should attend here. Students who want to be
part of great friendly and easy going environment should attend here. If you don't want to have a pay for text books, Western has a rental system.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Am enjoying being here I've definitely made a lot of new friends here. Lots of campus activities make it easy to meet people, even if you're a shy, introverted, or reserved person.
Bang for the buck Tuition recently increased, but other than that, the facilities are well-maintained and the education is definitely worth it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Great programs, hands-on learning. Much better then just traditional lecturing. Projects, homework, etc all reflect course material and are very helpful. Many resources available to us such as tutoring, writing workshops, and math labs.
Am enjoying being here Many organizations on campus that promote outdoor activities. We live in the mountains, so there are a lot of things for us to do. Hiking, visiting water falls, whitewater rafting, etc!
Bang for the buck Probably THE cheapest public school in NC, with a lot to offer. Brand new dorms, a beautiful huge new gym with a rock climbing wall, many intramural sports to join, free tutoring for many many classes, writing lab for those tough papers, math lab for all math courses! All for FREE. You don't have to pay for books because that's included in tuition as well!
Tips for prospective students You're going to need a car, town is about 10 minutes down the road and it's hard to get around without one!
Great for these types of students Great for outdoorsy people, or people looking to experience something new. Very scenic place.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of my classes are really small, so that leads to a better student-teacher relationship. All of my professors this semester are very knowledgeable and cool, which makes for class being more fun.
Am enjoying being here Sure it's a small school, but you'll get over it. Seeing as it's smaller you'll be able to see and know more people around campus. There are lots of activities going on every week so there's always something to do. It's also not too far to towns nearby if you need to get out.
Bang for the buck Probably one of the more cheaper schools in North Carolina. I certainly enjoy getting my education for not as pricey as other school.
Tips for prospective students Definitely come visit before you decide to come here. You'll know once you're here if you'll like it.
Great for these types of students This place is great if you like the small town feel. Also if your an outdoors person. It's really nice out here in the fall.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The environment is amazing and not only the teachers but everyone is very helpful. Western will your home away from home and you will be proud to call yourself a Catamount. At Western, there is so much to do academically and recreationally so you will never get bored.
Tips for prospective students The best advice I received when I first came to Western is to get involved with activities on and around campus. You are able to meet so many more people that will impact your life and will help you with your academics and when you apply for jobs after graduation. Get involved!
Academic Rigor If you go to class and pay attention you will succeed.
Dorm Life I recommend living on campus for your first year. You get to be with everyone, be very close to your classes, and you will be more involved with activities on campus by living on campus. Living on campus will help you so much in your transition from high school to college.
Food and Dining The food is amazing! There is a wide variety of options for you every day all day.
What to do for fun There are a lot of activities in and around campus. There are many hiking tails and rivers to kayak/whitewater down right here by the campus. There are many waterfalls you can hike to or you can go to a concert or sporting event on campus. Trust me, you will not get bored.
Bang for the buck The money is worth it!
Clubs and Activities There is a wide variety of organizations you can get involved in.

Tips for prospective students Whatever you do, do not wait until the last minute to talk tot he people that you need to. Because it can be hard trying to get an appointment with certain people.
Dorm Life The bathrooms could be better though.
Food and Dining It's very delicious and they have about 11 different places to chose from on campus.
What to do for fun They have movies, concerts, plays, once there was a drag show, and other little events that you just have to keep your ears open for.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The classes are about the same size as in high school, which is good for building relationships with classmates and professors as well as getting help. There's also free tutoring. The forensics department even has the second of only five body farm facilities in the nation.
Will enjoy being here Concerts, movies, rafting, hiking, a climbing wall, karaoke, indoor pools, an indoor track, museums, sports, good food, a beautiful campus, friendly people, and a casino on the nearby reservation. The only drawback is the distance from family.
Bang for the buck Quite affordable as far as public four year universities go. The book rental system is good. There are a lot of free services and free, or cheap, activities. The school sells laptops that are configured for the school, software, and has some stores. There are cashpoints on campus and an SECU across the road. Your student ID serves as a meal card, etc.
Tips for prospective students Bring a fan! The freshman dorms don't have air conditioning.
Bring warm winter clothes and blankets.
Definitely bring an umbrella.Great for these types of students Anyone who loves mountains, the great outdoors, and music.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Western Carolina University is an institution with well developed professors. They work with the class and also the individual student to ensure the best for your education. I have had only positive interactions with the faculty and staff of the university. I plan on attending this university until my graduation date because I feel they do their best to ensure a good education.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being apart of Western Carolina University's campus life. It is very lively and gives you options. From the new recreation center to the new dining hall establishment, you will feel at home on this campus. The people are nice and the views are amazing.
Bang for the buck Who could ask for more. You get a great education, fine dining and living conditions, and most exciting of all, you get the wonderful experience of the mountains. From the many colors during the fall to the white winter, everything is beautiful. You get to experience the mountains like never before when you participate in the many outdoor and indoor activities that WCU has to offer. The most fun you will have at an college.
Tips for prospective students If you choose Western Carolina University, do not let your college experience go to waste. WCU has so much to offer. WCU can learn from you as much as you can learn from the institution. So don't jump be on campus, become apart of it and be a CATAMOUNT!!!
Great for these types of students IF you are an outdoor adventurer, WCU is the school for you. WCU offers amazing outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, white water rafting, etc. Also for students who love music, WCU has an awesome music program. We have the number one band in the nation, who has recently performed at the Rose Bowl. They put on great shows that not only brings the current students to the game but people who live in the surronding areas.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i would rate western carolina with an 8 because they are still growing. the reason i say this is because they are still developing or trying to become a bigger school. i also believe that there could be more things around cullowhee to do.
Tips for prospective students one of the major tips i would give to a prospective student would to make sure you like the out doors because if you don't there isnt much to do except go to asheville.
What to do for fun there is hiking, going to asheville, and atlanta is only 2 hours away.
Great for these types of students if you like the outdoors

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At Western Carolina University I feel like I am being challenged in my courses and learning something new every day. The faculty and staff are extremely friendly and always willing to make time to provide extra help when needed. I have learned many new things since starting school here last fall.
Am enjoying being here At WCU there are many things to do-- concerts provided by the student council, plays and performances by the theatre groups, intramural sports, various student organizations to join-- on a weekly basis. There is never a dull moment when living in the 'Whee.
Bang for the buck I definitely feel like WCU is a school that is reasonably priced and gives you more than what you paid for.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to come to WCU just because its a small school in a small town-- that doesn't mean that there aren't fun things to do and opportunities abound. Get out and meet new people, who knows, some of them might end up being the best friends you've ever had.
Great for these types of students WCU is a great school for ANYBODY. It is a really unique and diverse campus, and I'm sure that anyone who decides to become a Catamount will find their perfect little niche and fit right in.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Western has won awards for their Masters college and has been recognized for their Undergraduate school. They are interested in actually teaching the student. We will come first. They offer free proof reading for your essays and free tutoring!
Will enjoy being here There is always something to do from the schedule. There's plenty of clubs and activities so you can get involved! It's in a very small town. It's pretty much a community of it's own. The college has also won awards for their service projects, which I'm a big fan of. Everyone here is so nice and they're willing to make sure you feel comfortable and you are well advised.
Bang for the buck It's probably one of the most affordable In-state tuition I've come across.
Great for these types of students People who love the Mountains and small towns, people who like the outdoors and community service.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences If you are looking for a superb education, a beautiful campus, and a phenomenal college experience at a competitive price, Western Carolina University is the perfect college for you. Smack in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Western Carolina has some the best scenery around and offers some of the nation's highest-ranked academic programs. Home to less than 10,000 students, class sizes are relatively small and tuition is extremely affordable, making Western Carolina University the best in every category.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for cold and snowy weather! Not every winter is brutal, but it can happen! Classes are very rarely cancelled due to snow, so be sure to bring your snow boots. Once class is done for the day, grab your sled and enjoy the snow mountain-style!
Academic Rigor WCU's entrepreneurship and project-management programs are the highest-ranked in the nation. The criminal justice and teacher education programs have won national awards, and the emergency medical care program is the first accredited four-year program in the nation. Academics at WCU are held to very high standards and students will be challenged to step above and beyond their comfort level in order to stay on top of their education. For the exceptional student, the Honors College offers an even more rigorous--but very rewarding--academic experience.
Dorm Life Freshmen are required to live on campus. This is important because it provides you with opportunities to become involved with the university and exposes you to a greater variety of people. While living in a dorm, everything on campus is within walking distance. Each of the 13 residence halls at WCU provide their own unique experience. Amenities and rules vary from building to building. Although you are allowed to move off-campus your sophomore year, many students choose to continue living on-campus.
Food and Dining Students living on and off-campus can participate in WCU's different meal plans. The courtyard dining hall serves homestyle meals, and two food courts provide mall-like dining with a Chikfila, Papa John's, Panda Express and several other restaurants . The campus also has a McAlister's deli, a Starbucks, Einstein Brother's Bagels, and a Java City.
What to do for fun Even if you spend the next four years of your life at WCU, you will never run out of things to do at WCU. The campus itself has a pool, movie theater, a rock-climbing wall, and intramural sports teams. Base Camp Cullowhee is a club that provides you with the opportunity to go rafting, hiking, caving, whitewater kayaking, camping, skiing, skydiving and more. The Tuckaseigee River and Bear Lake are also close by and provide even more fun. If you're not an outdoorsy person, head downtown to enjoy shopping and nightlife!
Bang for the buck WCU is one of the most affordable colleges in the UNC system, with approximate cost of attendance being $7000 per semester for in-state students and $12,000 per semester for out-of-state students.
Great for these types of students WCU is great for students who appreciate the unique mountain culture of North Carolina and don't mind being an hour drive from any big city.
Greek Life WCU is home to 14 fraternities and 9 sororities. Greek life at WCU opens doors to great networking opportunities, scholarships and lifelong friendships.
Campus Safety Western Carolina has its own University Police Department to provide law enforcement and crime prevention, active 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The emergency siren and PA system immediately alert students in the event of a campus lockdown.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Western Carolina is one of the best Universities in North Carolina. The academics are great and there is a lot of extra curricular activities that everybody can become involved in. Western Carolina is a great atmosphere to be in.
Tips for prospective students My tip for prospective students is to stay focused. There are a lot of distractions that students can become involved in.
Academic Rigor I rated the academic rigor a four because classes are fairly difficult. As long as you stay focused in your academics, there should be no problem being successful.
Dorm Life I rated dorm life a five because it is a great experience. Living in a different place than what you are used to, makes a person very cultured. I recommend dorm living for anybody wanting a change in their life and to make life long friends.
Food and Dining I rated food and dining a four because there are a lot of options to choose from. No matter what a person is in the mood for, there is usually something on campus that will suffice.
What to do for fun There are many activities that Western Carolina puts on for the students to get involved and have fun. These activities include a wide variety, from movies to Zumba classes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Each year in the spring, there is a big celebration for the annual turning on the fountain that is located in the center of our campus.
Clubs and Activities I rated clubs and activities a four because there are many things to be involved in at Western.
Campus Safety The campus safety at Western is superb. Through everything that goes on, the students are always notified and protected.

Tips for prospective students Buy an annoying alarm clock.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Western Carolina is a great school to transition to out of high school. The faculty is more than willing to help out all students. I would recommend this college to all high school seniors.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know how to manage your time correctly. Don't fall behind if you're having difficulties notify your professor. Many look down on the fact of the college being in the back woods of the mountains. But the mountains are beautiful and you have to know how to create your own fun.
What to do for fun Ride to the lake, go to the top of the mountain, and the funnest part is getting out of the house.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the forensic science program, there is a FBI body farm located somewhere in the hills of cullowhee.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Western is a very laid back and comfortable school. The academics here are great, but not overly challenging. Western has extremely friendly staff.
Tips for prospective students Don't stress about going here because it is not a stressful school.
What to do for fun The campus thankfully provides a lot of activities for students to partake in. There are a lot of movie nights and festivals. Sports are definitely big on campus. There are a lot of nature related activities to do as well because of the mountains. The town of Cullowhee also has some entertainment options.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus When the fountain is turned on it's called the catafount. Picnic tables next to Cullowhee creek. There is a guy who dresses in all purple for football games.
Great for these types of students Studious, fun loving, nature loving, social, athletic, motivated

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Western is people oriented with a focus on helping students become better at what they want to be. The student to professor ratio is great: I've been in one class with more than thirty people so far and that was an elective choir class. The Honors College, Entrepreneurship, and Geology programs are unique to WCU and would be great to investigate.
Tips for prospective students Bring an umbrella and rain boots. The weather tends to pour buckets occasionally.
Get to know your professors and advisors! They will be great at helping design your college career for you if they know more about what you like. Plus, they're great at getting you helpful things and giving useful advice.
You may want to plan on cooking part of the time: there's not a huge variety of food here. (But I'm something of a foodie so I'm picky.)Academic Rigor So far everything is hard work but it's easy to get it accomplished if you just stay on top of everything. The fewest hours I've had per semester here are 16 and even with 18 I've only had trouble when I procrastinated.
Dorm Life It's great. Just know what type of dorm life you want and pick your dorm accordingly. Balsam will be more quiet, Scott and Walker will be louder party dorms (depending on the floor you pick.) Talk to your counselor during orientation and ask them about the dorms. More than likely, the counselors are RAs during the semester.
Food and Dining Eh... there's Chik-Fil-A, Starbucks, Einsteins, McAlister's, Panda Express, Burger Studio, Zoca's, and Freshens. Then there are several cafes and convenience stores on campus. The food is decent and there's a good variety but I get tired of restaurant food quickly since I love to cook my own meals. Across the street, there are several good restaurants that offer a change from what's offered on campus but they don't accept CatCash.
What to do for fun Hiking, camping, kayaking, and more outdoor sports.
There's a great library to explore!
Unique shops in historic downtown Sylva.
On weekends there is downtown Asheville which is an experience in itself! There are lots of seasonal festivals in Sylva and Asheville that are a lot of fun to go to. The WNC Mountain State Fair is great!Bang for the buck WCU is the lowest priced NC college and while it might not have all the amenities that other colleges have, the faculty is exceptional and if you're here to learn and enjoy the mountains you won't be disappointed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is actually a bomb shelter in the basement of the Political Science building from the Cold War era.
Great for these types of students Outdoorsy-types and those who don't want to live in or around a big city.
Clubs and Activities There are a TON of clubs and activities going on. Rates for activities such as skiing, sky-diving, and more are cheaper than any other rates I've seen.
Greek Life There are several Greek organizations but I don't plan on joining so I wouldn't be the best person to ask.
Campus Safety So far, we've had an extremely inept bank robber and that's been about it. The police are on top of things safety-wise and since WCU isn't near a big city it's actually fairly safe. The most dangerous thing is driving too fast: there have been a few really bad wrecks (with at least one fatality) because students took corners or mountain roads too fast.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a great school with some nice people and great teachers. Some students are mean, but you will occur those at any school. I would give this school a rating of 3 out of 5.
Tips for prospective students Visit the school first, an open house day(on a saturday) would be the best. But it is also good to go on a regular tour when the college is in session. If you live far away from the mountains, you may get homesick easily. Work hard to get in the school. Make friends with classmates. And if you don't like your roommate, then switch. Most teachers are very friendly and approachable. Meet some teachers or try to sit in a class to get the experience.
Academic Rigor This is a decent college. Very good teachers who care about their students success in college and in life. Sometimes the assignments can be challenging, but sometimes they aren't.
Dorm Life This is what I did not like the most about this college. There are only 13 dorms. The ones freshman usually get into are Scott, Walker, and Buchanan. Scott is ok, but most people in this dorm are people who like to party. Walker's rooms are very small and cramped, and your are required to either bunk the beds or loft the beds. Buchanan rooms are the nicest, but the only problem is that it is a hike away from the rest of campus. My advice would be to live in Scott or Walker because they are right on campus. Buchanan is really far away and at night it gets pretty creepy with how fast it gets dark and how quiet it is.
Food and Dining Dining is pretty good at this school. The lunch ladies are very nice and like to see the kids happy. The food can be a disgusting at times though. And some of the food can get to be very repetitive at times. There is a ZOCA(mexican restaurant), a Panda Express(Chinese food), Freshens( ice cream) and a Burger Studio at the bottom of the cafeteria. At the University Center(U.C) there is a papa johns and a Chic-Fil-A.
What to do for fun You can go to the Cats Den where there is a bunch of arcade games. You can also hang out with friends by the fountain. Sadly, other then that there isn't much to do. You would have to drive out to Asheville, or Gatlinburg to have a good time. Sylva, the town outside of the college, is where most kids go to hang out.
Bang for the buck There aren't that many people at this school, but the ones there already are very nice people. The football team isn't good at all but the basketball team is great. The school is really hoping to become the next big college in the future. They hope to become this by renovating dorms, building new academic buildings and new dorms.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a dip in between the resident hall, Madison, and the academic building, Moore. Most people know that there was a murder here about 40 years ago and it has come to speculation recently that it is haunted. On Halloween, people try to see the ghost.
Great for these types of students Students who like the mountains, like to be outgoing, and want to attend a very small school. Class sizes usually range from 20 to 30 students, but some classes can have up to 70 students.
Clubs and Activities There is a bunch of clubs at this college. They range from interest clubs(like Video Game and Comic Book club) to academic clubs(like Math and Economics club). I am personally in Comic Book, Anime, Fianance and Investment club and I enjoy the meeting a lot. They have great leaders and students in the clubs.
Greek Life Greek life at Western Carolina can get out of control sometimes though. Fraternities and sororities through parties usually on Thursday through Sunday. Some fraternities have been thrown off campus due to excessive rule breaking or are not affiliated with the college. An example could be Pike.
Campus Safety The college is very safe and the cops are some of the nicest people you can ever meet. The only days they can be mean though is on move in a move out day. Little crime happens at this college, but thats needless to say that some crimes do happen. The police men and campus guards work very hard to ensure safety of every student, teacher and faculty member

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Western Carolina University is a fantastic school. It offers great academics while still being a beautiful campus. It is small, and so the class sizes are even smaller than at my high school.
Tips for prospective students The only thing close is a Wal-mart so WCU may not be the school for you if you are used to having large shopping centers. The school is located in Cullowhee, NC that is a neighboring city to the slightly larger Sylva, NC but if you are used to big cities, it would not be the place for you. Western is the perfect school for people that come from small towns because you will feel like you are back home. At WCU professors and students are able to have great relationships because of the small class sizes. The campus is small and so there is no need for lots of walking. The most important thing to remember is to always carry an umbrella because the weather is temperamental. WCU = WE CARRY UMBRELLAS.
Academic Rigor Compared to some colleges the classes at Western are definitely easier, but you cannot slack off. Although the classes can be classified as easier they are still quite difficult. Studying is recommended if you want to make A's.
Dorm Life The dorms at Western vary for each one. The Honors College dorm, Balsam, and Blueridge are neighboring buildings both dorms include air condition and a private bathroom. Scott is considered the freshman dorm and does not contain air condition or wireless internet, the bathrooms are also community/hall baths, there are two to each floor. Walker another freshman dorm is suite-style in that you would share a bathroom with 7 other people.
Food and Dining The food and dining here on campus is of good quality but it tends to get routine. It is best to get the meal plan with the largest amount of declining balance so you can eat at Mcalisters, because it is the best on campus. If you eat off campus every once in a while, you should be fine.
What to do for fun For fun one could join many campus activities or travel to Franklin, about 30 minutes away, for roller skating or bowling. Also there are different hiking trails in the local area for outdoorsy people. Asheville is about 45 minutes away and is the closest big city.
Bang for the buck Western in one of the cheaper colleges in North Carolina, and yet it's academics can still compete with other colleges.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One unusual tradition that WCU holds is the battle of the jug with App State. This battle deals with our football rivalry with App State. This tradition is taken very seriously.
Great for these types of students Western Carolina is great for students who come from small towns.
Campus Safety Western is a very safe campus. I never have had problems with my safety here on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences western carolina university is a beautiful campus nestled in the mountains of western carolina. there are many chances for students to get involved with the university, whether it be educational or extracurricular. western carolina university is a school that truly seems to care about its students.
Tips for prospective students know what you want! while you have some time to decide a major, with all of the freshman required courses, it it still highly important that a new student decided what they want from the beginning of their college career. always, always ask whatever question you may have, people are there to help you and are not as intimidating as they seem, and rent all the books you can it will save a large amount of money.
Academic Rigor classes can be hard and challenging but in so many good ways. the faculty truly seems to have a grasp on what they are teaching us as students, and while some classes are harder or easier than others, there is always a challenge to be found in the course list. sometimes however it seems, as i am sure it seems with most colleges, that the professors do not realize you have other responsibilities with other classes.
Dorm Life dorm life is actually quite comfortable. when i first arrived on campus i was worried about small dirty rooms and people i would never get to know. however with all of the activities and wonderful r.a.'s dorm life is much better than i had ever hoped let alone expected.
Food and Dining there are many options for food on campus, but if you want a more healthy meal you may as well buy your own groceries rather than dine on campus. the dining hall can be pricey (especially with the steep prices of a freshman meal plan) and the other options are geared towards fast food. eating healthy is somewhat a challenge at w.c.u. but it is still possible;
What to do for fun while cullowhee is sometimes refereed to as 'cullowhere' w.c.u. still plans an exorbitant amount of activities to try and help students interact with each-other and the environment. camping trips, hikes, skiing, kayaking, races, dance marathons, and even more are all offered and generally student run. and if you want a night on the town the city of asheville is a measly forty-five minutes away.
Bang for the buck while tuition is never cheap this school has one that is lower than most other non community colleges. with so much fun to be had around campus and such a beautiful landscape w.c.u. really is a jewel hidden away in the mountains. the campus is also highly maintained and always clean and beautiful.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus this university is full of tradition that i, as a freshman, am still learning. purple fridays, movies in the university center, humans versus zombies games, and marching band worship are just a few of the traditions all catamounts know of. 'cullowhee beach', which is actually a creek, is one of the warm weather hotspots on campus.
Great for these types of students western carolina university is great for all types of students. whether you are interested in being amazingly educated by brilliant thinkers or living the college experience, w.c.u. can be the place for you. with tuition costs less than most other colleges and majors offered from business to forensics w.c.u. offeres a wonderful education environment for any student, young or old, who wishes to learn.
Clubs and Activities there are clubs for almost...anything! martial arts, creative writing, and even comic books. whether it is a hobby or a passion there is a club for any and every student, and on of the greatest club/class/activity is the marching band, it is one of the greatest bands in the nation and a winner of the sudler trophy.
Campus Safety with many campus security people on call and alarm signals placed sporadically through out campus i have never once felt an once of felt an once of fear. we experience a robbery, where a student was believed to have had a gun, and campus went into lock-down immediately. we were only allowed out as soon as they knew we were in no danger, proof that our security is wonderful.

Tips for prospective students make sure you bring a variety of clothes. the weather can be chilly one day and super warm the next. always layer.
What to do for fun this is a great campus if you love the outdoors. we have basecamp cullowhee which organizes canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking and camping trips.
Clubs and Activities there are lots of clubs and different activities that are posted around campus. the music department has recitals every tuesday (usually) and there is always something happening on the quad.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences western is a culturally diverse school. instruction is delivered on an individual basis. professors are available to serve the needs of all students during convenient office hours.
Tips for prospective students bring a bicycle to ride around campus on. pack your lunches to avoid paying high prices at campus dining locations. rally for better parking accommodations.
Academic Rigor it would seem that all of the science specific courses are particularly challenging. most other courses, such as liberal studies courses are much easier, and less rigorous. the nursing program is quite challenging itself.
Dorm Life the dorm life is not very appealing. spacing for individuals is cramped at best, and i found that most people had issues with their roommate at some point. dorm living is more convenient that living off campus.
Food and Dining the food at western is good. the dining could improve it's services by bringing in more diverse foods. there should be more restaurant options made available to students on campus.
What to do for fun there is not much to do in the surrounding area, unless you are extremely into hiking, or other wilderness activities. my friends and i often travel a short distance away to asheville, nc for some night life fun, there is a really neat club called base camp cullowhee which is an outdoors participant group.
Bang for the buck i find it hard to justify some of the charges that are applied to our tuition. for example, the school recently added in a fountain to the center of campus, which totals at $2,000 added to our tuition. i wish they would find more efficient ways to add beauty to our campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus our campus hosts a particularly odd intramural sport, known as hvz. hvz stands for humans versus zombies. in this sport, zombies chase humans around campus, playing the ultimate game of freeze tag.
Great for these types of students this school is great for outdoors-loving students. the campus is suited for individuals with a greater need for one on one attention. students whom need to feel recognized in class would do well here.
Clubs and Activities i have participated in club sports. i have played for an intramural softball team. i have also played for an intramural soccer team.
Greek Life i do not have an opinion on greek life. i have not pledged to a sorority, nor a co-ed fraternity. i have considered joining a sorority at times, though.
Campus Safety a robbery took place at a bank a couple months ago. it made me feel unsafe. i really want to feel safer here.

Tips for prospective students don't get nervous to ask stupid questions, people would rather you know the answer then be embarrassed.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot The teachers are amazing. However, a lot of them are bias depending upon your major. Most are very approachable though. The English department is excellent!
Did enjoy being here The atmosphere is very inviting. The mountains are beautiful and there are so many things to do outdoors. The student body can be kind of cliquish. Try and get into as many organizations as possible.
Bang for the buck WCU has one of the lowest tuition rates in NC. If you are an undergrad you do not have to buy your books. The bookstore rents out all of your books to you for about $100 a semester.
Tips for prospective students Try to get into as many organizations as possible. This will help you gain lasting friendships and make the experience much more pleasant. Getting an education through Western without a support system is not ideal, I would know. Talk to the teachers, they are very approachable and love to have conversations with students. Beware of administrators. You will want to stay on your adviser about things and the head of departments. Make sure you get everything in writing!
Great for these types of students If you like being outdoors and having loose responsibility than WCU is the school for you. It is laid back but they expect you to do the work. They won't hold your hand but they will help you if you just ask.

Am enjoying being here There are movies every weekend at the school theater, there's a pool, and there's a recreation center with a climbing wall. The people are pretty nice and the food is good. There's a Subway on campus as well as a Panda Express. There are sometimes concerts too. There is a good health center. The band is great.
Bang for the buck Pretty affordable for a four year university. You can rent textbooks rather than buying them and a lot of the activities are free and affordable.
Tips for prospective students Bring a fan and umbrella. Freshman residence halls are not air conditioned. Learn to do your own laundry and either have CatCash or plenty of quarters.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot I learned a great deal when it came to my major. I learned a bit outside of my major courses as well, but the academics are not that challenging.
Did enjoy being here The campus is absolutely beautiful and rests in a valley. If you love the outdoors and like a campus that keeps to itself, then this is the right university for you. There's tons of outdoor activities to participate in like white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking etc. The only thing around is a wal-mart, an irish bar and a waffle house. But honestly you have everything you need on campus.
Bang for the buck The school is relatively cheap but as I said, I personally felt that certain majors excelled there. It's a quiet life-style with a decent academic curriculum. Basically you get what you pay for.
Tips for prospective students Always carry an umbrella. WCU stands for We Carry Umbrellas. It rains all they time. I would recommend buying rain boots as well. They come in handy.
Great for these types of students If you love the outdoors than this is a great school for you. The campus is absolutely gorgeous and because it rests in the valley it can have the best weather. If you like to stay focused in school without any outside distractions then this is a great place for you. Asheville is the closest big city and its a forty-five minute drive to get there.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Every professor has an incredible amount of experience. All classes are small enough for your professor to know you by name so you'll have more of a chance to ask questions and have a better relationship with the professor. If you really pay attention, show up, apply yourself, and take advantage of all of the tutoring and help that is provided on campus, you are pretty much guaranteed to make the Dean's List.
Will enjoy being here With the jaw-dropping amount of clubs and organizations one can immerse their self in, the overwhelming welcoming attitude of the majority of the people, the incredible school spirit and pride, and beautiful campus and surrounding area, I am very confident I will absolutely love it here.
Bang for the buck Though tuition prices have climbed, I'm positive the education and experience will be very much worth it.
Tips for prospective students Just the typical tips: Show up, pay attention, and shoot for the Dean's List. Also try to stay away from drinking as much as you can. Also, do not pirate anything, cheat, or plagiarize. They have strict policies there for every single one. If you must drink, don't be stupid about it.
Great for these types of students Western is incredibly diverse with what they have to offer students. No matter what you're majoring in, you will get an excellent quality education. I myself am going for Musical Theatre. Western is a great school for Performing Arts. With a Broadway caliber stage, Terrence Mann on the faculty along with several other talented faculty members, I'm incredibly excited to begin my degree.
