Of course. The teachers are very helpful and will lend a hand whenever you need it.

    Am enjoying being here

At 1st I thought I would be going home every weekend but with the friends I met in my dorm its a blast. It is a very nice campus with lounge areas where you can chill and talk with others or quiet study areas to get some work done

    Tips for prospective students

For 1st year students you should definitely check out the Center for Student Progress. The people in there are real cool and they have peer mentors that help you and teach you different things about campus and college life.

    Tips for prospective students

Get the Undergraduate Bulletin... EVERYTHING is in there.

Great for these types of students

Prospective music majors... This school is awesome for music. There are phenomenal teachers here and you will get a great education. I haven't started yet but I know some of the teachers and plenty of people who have graduated from YSU and loved it.

    Am learning a lot

YSU offers many opportunities inside and outside of class for learning. Outside of class, YSU offers tutors for every subject which are very helpful and most professors hold office hours or have them by appointment which I highly recommend every student attends. The professors are here to help and they will do anything to assist you with any problems you may have.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is not very big but it's not very small either. Campus is very beautiful and it makes you feel at home. YSU has many different types of clubs and organizations for everyone out there and I do mean everyone. It's a great way to meet new people and have fun while you are here.

    Bang for the buck

The programs here at YSU are very well put together. You can get the same education here as you can at a higher end college for a lot cheaper. Not only is it worth the money, but YSU also offers many different scholarships and awards plenty of financial aid to help you out. Their financial aid offices are a great help and will assist you with any problems you may have when it comes to paying for college.

    Tips for prospective students

Have fun. Get involved. You will get the most of your college experience by getting involved with clubs, organizations and even a job on campus. Take time from school to relax and enjoy yourself. Not only will you have fun but it will help you with school by controlling your stress. Don't be afraid to ask questions, either in class or outside of class. That's what professors are here for.

Great for these types of students

Youngstown State University is great for a number of different students. I am a part of their Education program and it is a very well organized program and the professors in it are very helpful and love what they are doing which makes class quite enjoyable. I recommend it for Education majors.

Just by speaking with some of staff at YSU, there is a set plan for my education. I cant wait to see what this new experience will bring.

    Will enjoy being here

I am looking forward to meeting new people and actually getting involved with the campus activities.

    Tips for prospective students

Youngstown State is a good value for a 4+ college. It is a medium size campus with all the activities as a larger campus.

Great for these types of students

I am heading in under Law Enforcement. I see that YSU offers a number of majors and I am looking forward to meeting so many new people.

    Am learning a lot

I have attended Youngstown State University for 3 semesters and have already found myself being engaged in detailed conversations concerning my Nursing major. Being able to speak at a more intellectual level has shown how much I have learned from YSU in such a small amount of time. My professors have been very intriguing and very helpful in trying to instill their knowledge in their students. This has also helped with my learning process.

    Am enjoying being here

Since my first day at Youngstown State University I have had so many doors open before my eyes involving new opportunities to learn and make my college experience amazing. I feel that I can truly enjoy myself at this particular college because I can stay as long as I want to study and spend time with friends, but then I can also leave when I want to come home and spend time with family. I enjoy being able to have more freedom and become involved with whatever I would like on campus. Youngstown State University gives me that exact opportunity.

    Bang for the buck

From my two previous reviews involving the learning abilities and enjoyment level, I definitely feel that Youngstown State University is a bang for the buck!

    Tips for prospective students

I would tell any student thinking about going to Youngstown State University that it is truly the college for them if they like being free, receiving a good solid education, and willing to work for their degree.

Great for these types of students

This college is great for students who want to get a taste of the outside world but who still want to fly back to their nest if need be since YSU is a wide known commuter school. This is a great place to be yourself, meet new people, and do your own thing while still getting a great education for your future career.

    Am learning a lot

At Youngstown State University I have learned so much and I am continuing to grow with knowledge. The professors want you to challenge yourself not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom. I have not had a professor yet that I have not learned valuable information from and in giving me the opportunity to do my own research outside the classroom I have learned the most. I feel like a detective sometimes uncovering new leads or reaching dead ends where I have to link information to find a new leads. Coming into any college environment I think everyone needs to be aware of the learning that needs to take place outside of the classroom which I believe what I have been taught most.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being at Youngstown State University so much that I decided to get a campus job. I am a peer mentor at the Center for Student Progress and I mentor incoming college freshmen to help them adjust to college life. I am also involved in a few different organizations and play on the intramural volleyball team. The students, professors, and staff at YSU are all very excepting and the campus has so much to offer.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, you do get your 'bang for your buck' at YSU. I believe YSU has cheaper credit hours than some other colleges. Also, I feel what I am paying for is well worth it. I am a junior now and so far I feel all of my classes have been very academically and personally rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips I have for prospective students enrolling into any college would be to not wait to get involved on campus. Go to the Center for Student Progress and see your Peer Mentor. It is a proven fact that those students who do get involved on campus are more likely to stay in college and complete their degree. I you need help in a class just ask, seek tutoring (which is FREE) or talk to the professor to see if they have a graduate assistant who could help you. Also, go to the professors office hours because the professor does not know you need help unless you go talk to them. Find an organization or club to join to get involved on campus and in the community. YSU has about any organization you could think of so no excuses for not getting involved. Lastly, if you have the opportunity to get a campus job then please do it. Being an employee on campus lets me network so much and doors started to open for me that I never knew existed.

Great for these types of students

YSU is great for high school graduates who want to live on campus to have the full college experience. There are dorms on and off campus. Also, YSU is smaller than most state schools so it is a smaller but not to small of an environment to adjust to. YSU is also great for commuting students which is what I do. Furthermore YSU is a great place for nontraditional students as well. So if you are a student thinking about returning to college now and you are juggling kids, work and school you will do fine at YSU because their are many nontraditional students. I have two kids, bills, work and school but at YSU I have been able to keep a 3.8/4.0 GPA.

Youngstown State University offers an array of certified majors and minors that will continuously challenge you from freshman year through graduate school. YSU's Anthropology program is very proactive in keeping students informed with updated field information and using the latest forms of teaching technology.

    Am enjoying being here

YSU has some of the greatest academic programs in Ohio. Couple that with an intimate learning setting and you get a high quality college experience here. Professors here are very personable and willing to go out of their way to help in any way possible.

    Bang for the buck

Located in Youngstown, Ohio, YSU offers a renowned college experience for a fraction of the price of other Ohio schools such as Ohio State University or the University of Toledo.

    Tips for prospective students

Make an effort to make friends and meet people in your perspective fields. This is useful at any college, but here at YSU people are of a different breed. Everyone wants to help everyone else, it is great.

Great for these types of students

YSU has outstanding programs in engineering, nursing, and social sciences. People are here to work towards a better future, and they don't mind taking time to help you get to your better future.

    Am learning a lot

My courses are specific to me and have increased my understanding of my major.

    Am enjoying being here

Now that I am working on my master's, I am able to be more involved in my laboratory work to produce my thesis. At this point in time, the classes I take aid my hard work in the laboratory.

    Bang for the buck

YSU is reasonable priced in comparison to other surrounding universities. I know many people who wanted to go away for college, and due to increasing costs, had to move back and attend YSU.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to each class and prepare for future lectures. College is a time to network and learn about the people around you. That being said, study with other classmates or tutor if you grasp the subject matter well. Not only does that increase your retention, it looks very good on your curriculum vitae or resume. Also, take advantage of your professor's contact information, especially their office hours. Utilizing these tools show your teacher that major effort is being used on your part to succeed in their class.

Great for these types of students

All types of students roam this campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the Center for Student Progress. They walk you through everything step by step, especially for your first year. There is free tutoring offered also if you need it.

Great for these types of students

There are about 15,000 students here, so there is a decent size student body but the campus is nice because it's not very big and very easy to adjust to. Everyone around campus is very friendly. Everyone is very inviting and it's great for anyone looking for a public school that really makes you feel welcome.

I am an exercise science pre physical therapy major and I really enjoy the program that I am in. I have also heard nothing but good from my friends who are music majors as well as education majors. There are some very competitive programs here such as nursing and dental hygiene just to name a couple.

Youngstown is a diverse campus with an exceptional amount of oppotunities to meet new people and explore different cultures. The campus is beautiful and there are over two thousand trees on campus, offering shade and a feeling of comfort. The teachers here really want their students to succeed and will help in any way they can, including offering one on one time and going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that their students pass.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved on campus, whether it be in an organization or through getting an on campus job. Be open to meeting new people and do activities. Study hard and go see your professors if you're struggling. Also, go to class because the teachers here are pretty amazing.

    Academic Rigor

The general education requirements are typically your less difficult classes, but don't expect to pass if you don't show up or never turn anything in. Your professors want you to pass, but you have to help yourself, too.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in a dorm because I live off-campus, but plenty of my friends on campus say that living in the dorms is amazing and so much fun.

    Food and Dining

We have Arby's, Dunkin Donuts, five or six cafes, University Pizza, Jimmy John's, and more. There are so many places to go on campus to get great food at great prices. And Pete's Points (the meal plan at YSU) is taken at most locations.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do on campus. Greek life, clubs, organizations. You name it, our campus probably has it. We have the Watson & Tressel training site and an amazing rec center, too.

    Bang for the buck

The education offered at YSU is so affordable! You get the exact same education (if not a better one) offered by larger, more prestigious colleges for more than half the price.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a rock on campus. The story behind it is this: There was some construction happening on campus when the workers discovered this huge boulder. Rather than get rid of it, the university decided to keep it. And now, the rock is painted at least two or three times a week, promoting student activities on campus or organizations. Just this year alone, one student proposed to his girlfriend by painting on the rock.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student can do well here. Youngstown State is an ethnically diverse college, as well as an educationally diverse college. People from all ages come to YSU and receive an excellent education.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs from environmental clubs, to the gay-straight alliance, to chemistry clubs, to theatre clubs, etc. If there isn't a club for someone, then that person can make one. There is guaranteed to be at least one or two other people interested in that activity.

    Greek Life

Greek life is big at Youngstown State. There is an annual Greek Sing competition every year and there are a ton of other Greek life activities throughout the year.

    Campus Safety

Youngstown State has their own police station. They have their opwn police cars. The campus police are everywhere and are heavily involved in ensuring that students are safe. Our police officers are here to protect the students and they do their job well.

A good medium sized school. You get to know lots of people, but yet you aren't overwhelmed by too many people on campus. Continuing to gain recognition and make new renovations.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on campus if you are not from the area- at least your first year. Get involved in campus. Connect with your professors. Study abroad.

    Academic Rigor

Some programs have a higher rigor than others, but there are plenty of rigorous programs for students.

    Dorm Life

Some may complain about the small or outdated rooms, but I loved them and choose to stay on campus rather than move off campus. Plus I was an RA and that was a blast in of itself!

    Food and Dining

There are many on and off campus options, but not the most healthy options and you may grow tired of these options.

    What to do for fun

Get involved on campus and attend outside events. There are sponsored semester concerts at discounted prices. There is a great Rec Center with lots of free activities to participate in. You mostly have to create your own fun with friends at YSU, but it is worth it and if you really try you will never forget your time spent at YSU.

    Bang for the buck

I think your 'Bang for the buck' is better now, but based on my experience at the time it was So-So

    Clubs and Activities

A variety for everyone... everything from 'Harry Potter Club' to 'Service Club' to 'Cheese Club' :)

    Greek Life

Not in Greek Life, but we have a very active Greek Life in which people not active in the organizations can semi participate.

Youngstown State is a great size school and has great classes. The classroom sizes are different every class but, are manageable. The amount of activities you can be involved in is huge at YSU, especially if you stay on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a huge step in your life so take it seriously. You can have fun but still do good in school. Everyone has their limits and after your first semester you will see them. Meet lots of people your first couple of weeks. Be your self and be open to change and to new things. Go out and do things you have always wanted to do. I would also recommend talking to your roommate before school so that you already know a little about each other already.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is good, living on campus has let me meet so many more people than living at home. Also I have a life time friend because of my room mate. Also housing at YSU puts on a lot of activities so their are a lot of random things to do within the dorms. We have had movie nights, pizza parties, baking parties. Also housing has put on fashion shows, virgin alcohol parties. Their is always something to do.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining is pretty good on campus, you pretty much get sick fo the food but, I feel like that is anywhere because you are eating the same thing over and over again if you live on campus.

    What to do for fun

I love going to the rec because you can get on the machines or play basketball. Their is nothing really within walking distance of campus but, the mall is close and their are many clubs around campus. My friends and I like having movie nights.

    Greek Life

Greek life is pretty popular here.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great, no matter what you will see tow or three cops just driving or walking around.
