The University of Vermont is the flagship and largest public university in the state. It is also one of the original eight "Public Ivies," a distinction coined in 1985 bestowed to universities that provide an Ivy League experience at a public school price.
Castleton State College, a public university located in Castleton, is the oldest in the state and offers degrees in more than 30 undergraduate as well as master's degrees in education.
