For four consecutive years, the Getty Grant Program has awarded the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College a grant to support three summer internships for undergraduates of diverse cultural backgrounds. The program is designed to introduce students of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander descent to careers available in museums and related fields. Interns focus on one of three areas: curating, registration or education. Each internship is for a full-time position for 10 weeks in the summer. A stipend of $3,000 is awarded each intern.
In addition to working on special projects at the Gallery, the interns attend symposia on arts management organized by the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Gallery director also takes them to museums in the Los Angeles area to examine different professions in the arts. Among the professionals on the visitation schedule are archivists, curators, grants writers and conservators.Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates and residents of, and/or attending college in the Los Angeles area. Students who have previously served as Getty interns are not eligible for consideration.
