Anne T. & Harry H. McNair Scholarship

Scholarship Description
Award Amount:$2000 General Scholarship Description:This scholarship is offered by the Department of English of the University of Oregon. General Scholarship Criteria:This scholarship is available to: Graduate Students UO Majors: English / Ethnic studies Awarded each year to a University of Oregon graduate for "post-graduate study in the field of American literature or American history and related subject. Such study may be pursued in any college or university selected by the student with the advise and approval of the authorities of the University of Oregon." Although the bequest specifies American literature or American history, it has been assumed that "related subjects" could include American Studies, American Civilization, American Folklore, and Ethnic Studies, for instance. Thus, though the recipient will normally have an undergraduate background in English or History, students with an undergraduate background in other areas may be considered. Graduate students with a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon are eligible for consideration as well as graduating seniors, but preference will be given to students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to go on to graduate study. The Head of the English Department is to receive applications and nominations and to administer the award. A committee of faculty members in English and History is to make the final selection. Students who wish to be considered for this scholarship should submit a one-page statement describing the relevant studies they have completed and the graduate work they propose to do. This statement should be supported by appropriate evidence, e.g., an up-to-date transcript and at least two faculty recommendations.
